Abstract
Thyroid disorders are common in medicine, while bipolar disorders (BDs), though less frequent, are significant due to global prevalence, the economic burden on healthcare systems and long-term health implications, and the effects of psychiatric illness on quality of life. Clinical research has suggested thyroid hormone imbalances can cause psychiatric symptoms similar to the clinical features observed in BDs. Despite increased attention in this area of study, much remains unknown regarding how thyroid issues contribute to the development of BDs. This review explores the complex link between thyroid disorders and BDs, focusing on neurochemical dynamics, changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, and genetic factors. Furthermore, this literature review examines the importance of understanding these factors in linking both conditions and emphasizes the necessity for therapies targeting their shared underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Objective: Menstrual disorders induced by high-temperature environments, can seriously damage women's reproductive health and workability. The regulation mechanism underlying it is not yet to be elucidated. Saliva is an information-rich biological fluid that can reflect systemic diseases. Here, we investigated the characteristics of menstrual cycle disorders and saliva metabolomics to provide a deeper insight of the regulation mechanism of young women in high-temperature environments. Methods: Women from high and normal temperature areas of China were selected and divided into two groups-high-temperature (H group) and control (C group). A questionnaire survey was conducted in summer (July) to investigate the incidence rate of menstrual disorders, characteristics of the disorders, and factors influencing the risk of these disorders in different regions. Metabolomics was applied to analyze the characteristics of the salivary metabolites and neurotransmitters in the two groups of women with menstrual disorders. Results: The incidence rate of menstrual disorders was significantly higher in the H group than that in the C group (p < 0.05). High-temperature environment, stress, and sleep quality were identified as critical factors associated with menstrual disorders. Non-targeted saliva metabolomics identified 64 significantly different metabolites between two groups, which mainly enriched in metabolic pathways such as carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, digestive system, and nucleotide metabolism (p < 0.05). N-acetylneuraminic acid, MYO, and tyramine may be candidate markers for early diagnosis of menstrual disorders in high temperature environments. Metabolites may be involving in the acute-phase response during an inflammatory process, to affecting the reproductive system by influencing the HPA axis loop. Regulations about oocyte membrane production and the luteal functions would be exerted in menstrual disorders. Targeted metabolomics of neurotransmitters revealed increased expression of histamine (HA) and glutamine and decreased expression of 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Menstrual disorder characteristics induced by high temperature environments were specific. Anxiety, sleep quality and temperature feeling were the key factors to the menstrual disorder. endocrine regulation mechanism and inflammatory reactions might contribute to the development of menstrual disorders through influencing the formation of the follicular cell membrane.

Abstract
Thyroid abnormalities, including mild forms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, are reported as risk factors for the development of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. The diagnostic process still takes into account the extreme ranges of the accepted reference values for serum TSH since the concentration of free thyroxine in the serum does not change by definition. TSH mU/L cut-off values in psychiatric patients are currently clinically considered in the case of extremely high serum TSH levels (>4.0 mU/L). The results obtained in this study suggest that the clinically significant value has a lower TSH cut-off point with an upper limit of 2–2.5 mU/L. The criteria for the differential diagnosis of patients with schizophrenia, however, mainly take into account statutory reference ranges without a background related to the history of thyroid diseases in the family. The results indicate the need to lower the upper cut-off values for TSH among patients with early psychosis, which is related to the potential clinical significance of the obtained values both in the field of clinical evaluation and neuroimaging and laboratory evaluation parameters. The cut-off points obtained with the prior available knowledge coincided with the values established in the unsupervised clustering method, which further confirms the legitimacy of their use in the individualized diagnosis strategy of schizophrenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study evaluates the neuroprotective effect of α-lipoic acid (ALA) and/or metformin (MET) on the behavioral and neurochemical changes induced by hypothyroidism. METHODS Rats were divided into control, rat model of hypothyroidism induced by propylthiouracil, and rat model of hypothyroidism treated with ALA, MET, or their combination. RESULTS Behaviorally, hypothyroid rats revealed impaired memory and reduced motor activity as indicated from the novel object recognition test and open-field test, respectively. Hypothyroidism induced a significant increase in lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde [MDA]) and a significant decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and nitric oxide (NO) in the cortex and hippocampus. These were associated with a significant increase in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and a significant decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Hypothyroidism decreased significantly the levels of serotonin (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA) and reduced the activities of acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and Na+, K+-ATPase in the cortex and hippocampus. Treatment of hypothyroid rats with ALA and/or MET showed an improvement in memory function and motor activity. Moreover, ALA and/or MET prevented the increase in MDA and TNF-α, and the decline in GSH, NO, BDNF, 5-HT, NE, and DA. It also restored AchE and Na+, K+-ATPase activities in the studied brain regions. CONCLUSION ALA and/or MET has a potential neuroprotective effect against the adverse behavioral and neurochemical changes induced by hypothyroidism in rats.

Abstract
The use of organ extracts to treat psychiatric disorder in the interwar period is an episode in the history of psychiatry which has largely been forgotten. An analysis of case-notes from The Maudsley Hospital from the period 1923-1938 shows that the prescription of extracts taken from animal testes, ovaries, thyroids, and other organs was widespread within this London Hospital. This article explores the way in which Maudsley doctors justified these treatments by tying together psychological theories of the unconscious with experimental data drawn from laboratory studies of human organs. It explores the logic behind these treatments and examines beliefs about their efficacy. The connection between this historical episode and current research in endocrinology and psychology is explored.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones are crucial during development and in the adult brain. Of interest, fluctuations in the levels of thyroid hormones at various times during development and throughout life can impact on psychiatric disease manifestation and response to treatment. Here we review research on thyroid function assessment in schizophrenia, relating interrelations between the pituitary-thyroid axis and major neurosignaling systems involved in schizophrenia's pathophysiology. These include the serotonergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic networks, as well as myelination and inflammatory processes. The available evidence supports that thyroid hormones deregulation is a common feature in schizophrenia and that the implications of thyroid hormones homeostasis in the fine-tuning of crucial brain networks warrants further research.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones are essential regulators of growth, development and normal bodily function and their release is coordinated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. While the HPT axis has been established as an acutely stress-responsive neuroendocrine system, relatively little is known about the mechanisms of its stress regulation. The present study examined acute stress-induced changes in peripheral hormone levels [triiodothyronine (T3); thyroxine (T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), reverse triiodothyronine (rT3)] and central mRNA levels of regulators of the HPT axis [thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), somatostatin (SST), type II deiodinase (D2)] in response to an inescapable tail-shock, a rodent model of stress. Additionally, we examined whether individual differences in spontaneous exploratory behavior in an open field test predicted basal levels of TH or differential susceptibility to the effects of stress. The stress condition was associated with decreases in peripheral T3, T4 and TSH, but not rT3, when compared with controls. No changes were observed in TRH or SST mRNA levels, but there was a trend suggesting stress-related increases in D2 mRNA. We also found that an animal's exploratory behavior in an unfamiliar open field arena was positively related to peripheral thyroid hormone levels and predicted the magnitude of stress-induced changes. In conclusion, we found suggestive evidence for stress-induced decrease in central drive HPT axis, but the central mechanisms of its stress regulation remain to be elucidated. Additionally, we found that individual differences in animals' exploratory behavior were correlated with peripheral TH levels.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis dysfunction is relevant to the pathophysiology and clinical course of bipolar affective disorder. Hypothyroidism, either overt or more commonly subclinical, appears to the commonest abnormality found in bipolar disorder. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction is also likely to be greater among patients with rapid cycling and other refractory forms of the disorder. Lithium-treatment has potent antithyroid effects and can induce hypothyroidism or exacerbate a preexisting hypothyroid state. Even minor perturbations of the HPT axis may affect the outcome of bipolar disorder, necessitating careful monitoring of thyroid functions of patients on treatment. Supplementation with high dose thyroxine can be considered in some patients with treatment-refractory bipolar disorder. Neurotransmitter, neuroimaging, and genetic studies have begun to provide clues, which could lead to an improved understanding of the thyroid-bipolar disorder connection, and more optimal ways of managing this potentially disabling condition.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was performed in order to examine the association between canine aggression to familiar people and serum concentrations of total thyroxine (TT4), free thyroxine (fT4), thyroxine autoantibodies (T4AA), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free triiodothyronine (fT3), triiodothyronine autoantibodies (T3AA), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAA). The subjects were 31 dogs historically aggressive to familiar people and 31 dogs with no history of aggression. Behavioral evaluation and physical examination were completed for each dog in addition to a complete blood count, serum chemistry panel, TT4, fT4 by equilibrium dialysis, TT3, fT3, TgAA, T3AA, and T4AA. Significant differences were found between the two groups with respect to only T4AA, which was increased in the aggressive group, but the concentrations for both groups were within the normal reference range. There were no differences between the two groups in the thyroid analytes most commonly measured by veterinary practitioners evaluating thyroid function in dogs. The results of this study revealed no significant difference between aggressive and non-aggressive dogs in the thyroid concentrations most commonly used to diagnose canine hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Pediatric aggression is common in human societies, mainly presenting as impulsive aggression or predatory aggression. Numerous psychiatric disorders can contain aggression as a symptom, leading to difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. This review focuses on the biological systems that affect pediatric aggression. We review the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, and the mechanisms by which these axes influence the body and mind of aggressive children and adolescents. Although this review focuses on the HPA and HPG axes, it is important to note that other biological systems have relationships with these two axes. Based on the results of the studies reviewed, elevated cortisol concentrations were associated with impulsive aggression, whereas, low levels of cortisol were associated with callous-unemotional traits similar to predatory aggression. Higher levels of dehydroepiandrosterone were correlated with higher levels of aggression as were higher levels of testosterone. However, there have been discrepancies in the results between various studies, indicating the need for more research on hormonal levels and pediatric aggression. In the future, hormonal levels may be useful in determining what treatments will work best for certain pediatric patients.

Abstract
Data collected from medical literature indicate that dopaminergic agonists alleviate Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms while dopaminergic agonists antagonists aggravate them. Dopaminergic agonists is a physiological regulator of thyroid-stimulating hormone. Dopaminergic agonists infusion diminishes the levels of thyroid hormones, which have the ability to provoke restlessness, hyperkinetic states, tremors, and insomnia. Conditions associated with higher levels of thyroid hormones, such as pregnancy or hyperthyroidism, have a higher prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms. Low iron levels can cause secondary Restless Legs Syndrome or aggravate symptoms of primary disease as well as diminish enzymatic activities that are involved in dopaminergic agonists production and the degradation of thyroid hormones. Moreover, as a result of low iron levels, dopaminergic agonists diminishes and thyroid hormones increase. Iron therapy improves Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms in iron deprived patients. Medical hypothesis. To discuss the theory that thyroid hormones, when not counterbalanced by dopaminergic agonists, may precipitate the signs and symptoms underpinning Restless Legs Syndrome. The main cause of Restless Legs Syndrome might be an imbalance between the dopaminergic agonists system and thyroid hormones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to discuss the effect of levothyroxine on excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and a prolonged nocturnal sleep at patients with idiopathic hypersomnia who presented with subclinical hypothyroidism. METHODS We present two patients with hypersomnia who complained of EDS and a prolonged nocturnal sleep time. Sleep architecture and subjective daytime sleepiness were estimated by polysomnography (PSG) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), respectively. Diagnoses were made using the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 2nd Edition criteria for idiopathic hypersomnia with long sleep time. RESULTS PSG demonstrated a short sleep latency, a prolonged total sleep time and normal proportions of all non-rapid eye movement (REM) and REM sleep stages. Nocturnal PSG excluded other causes of EDS. No medical, neurological and mental disorders were present. Their laboratory data indicated mildly elevated thyrotropin, despite free thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) estimates within their reference ranges, which is a characteristic of latent hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine (25 microg/day) was administrated orally. After treatment with levothyroxine for 8 weeks, the mean daily sleep times decreased. EDS was also improved, and a significant decrease in the ESS score was observed. Levothyroxine was effective for their hypersomnia and well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS It should be noted that hypersomnia may be associated with subclinical hypothyroidism, although few abnormalities in physical and neurological examinations are present.

Abstract
A lower thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in depressed women has been associated with violent suicide attempts, suicidal intent, higher lethality and suicide risk. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) levels are related to suicidal behaviour. We studied the HPT axis function in twelve male suicide attempters and eight healthy volunteers submitted to lumbar puncture and to TRH test. Suicidal behaviour and depression severity were assessed. There was no association between deltamaxTSH and violent suicidality or subsequent suicide. The deltamaxTSH correlated with CSF HVA in suicide attempters. The plasma T3 showed a negative correlation with the Beck Suicide Intent Scale and the Montgomery Asberg Depression rating scale. Dopaminergic regulatory mechanisms on the thyroid hormone activity may be altered in male suicide attempters.

Abstract
I review and evaluate genetic and genomic evidence salient to the hypothesis that the development and evolution of psychotic spectrum conditions have been mediated in part by alterations of imprinted genes expressed in the brain. Evidence from the genetics and genomics of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, Prader-Willi syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and other neurogenetic conditions support the hypothesis that the etiologies of psychotic spectrum conditions commonly involve genetic and epigenetic imbalances in the effects of imprinted genes, with a bias towards increased relative effects from imprinted genes with maternal expression or other genes favouring maternal interests. By contrast, autistic spectrum conditions, including Kanner autism, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, Turner syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, commonly engender increased relative effects from paternally expressed imprinted genes, or reduced effects from genes favouring maternal interests. Imprinted-gene effects on the etiologies of autistic and psychotic spectrum conditions parallel the diametric effects of imprinted genes in placental and foetal development, in that psychotic spectrum conditions tend to be associated with undergrowth and relatively-slow brain development, whereas some autistic spectrum conditions involve brain and body overgrowth, especially in foetal development and early childhood. An important role for imprinted genes in the etiologies of psychotic and autistic spectrum conditions is consistent with neurodevelopmental models of these disorders, and with predictions from the conflict theory of genomic imprinting.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate if the occupational exposure to urban stressor could cause alterations in dopamine (DA) plasma levels and related diseases in traffic police officers compared to a control group. After excluding subjects with principal confounding factors, 306 traffic police officers (139 female and 167 male) and 301 controls (134 female and 167 male) were included in the study. In traffic police officers, mean DA values were significantly higher compared with controls (P = 0.006 and P = 0.000 in male and female, respectively). The distribution of DA values in traffic police officers and controls was significant (P = 0.000 and P = 0.000 in male and female, respectively). The number of male traffic police officers with a positive response to the questionnaire's items concerning anxiety, depression and panic attacks was higher than controls, though not significant (7.2% traffic police officers versus 4.2% controls). This difference was also not significant in female traffic police officers compared with controls. According to our previous researches on other neuro-immune-endocrine parameters, DA could be used as an early biological marker, valuable for the group to be employed in occupational sets, even before the onset of pathology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human studies assessing thyroid hormone metabolism in relation to brain monoaminergic activity in vivo are scarce. The few studies that do exist suggest significant associations between thyroid function and monoaminergic activity, but the cause-and-effect relationships are far from elucidated. METHODS We simultaneously collected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from 35 patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery before, 3h after and the morning after interventions and performed analyses for thyroid hormones and monoamine metabolites. RESULTS At baseline, the CSF 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol concentrations were significantly correlated to the serum T(3)/T(4) ratio (rho=0.41, p=0.017). During surgery, serum thyroid hormones and the T(3)/T(4) ratio decreased (p<0.0001), while the CSF T(3)/T(4) ratio increased (p=0.0009). There were no correlations between serum and CSF levels of T(3) and T(4) at any of the samplings. Strong correlations were noted between baseline CSF thyroid hormone concentrations and subsequent increases in CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and homovanillinic acid (HVA), but not vice versa. CONCLUSIONS Thyroid hormone levels in serum and CSF during stress seem to be distinctly regulated. Baseline thyroid hormone activity may facilitate changes in brain monoaminergic neurotransmission in response to stress.

Abstract
Phenotypic discordance for schizophrenia in monozygotic twins clearly indicates involvement of environmental factors as key determinants in disease development. Positive findings from genome scans, linkage and association studies apply in only a minority of those affected, while post-mortem brain investigations reveal altered expression of genes and proteins involved in numerous neurodevelopmental, metabolic and neurotransmitter pathways. Such altered expressions could result, on the one hand, from mutations in coding regions or polymorphisms in the promoter and regulatory regions in genes within those areas identified by gene searches or, on the other hand, from inadequate amounts of modulators, transporters and synthesizers of transcription factors necessary for regulation of the putative genes. Hormones and vitamins are such modulators. They could serve as bridges between genes and environment in schizophrenia. Multiple evidence supports the suggestion of retinoids and thyroid hormones as plausible actors in these roles. Both are not only essential for normal development of the central nervous system but also regulate the expression of many neurotransmitters, their synthesizing enzymes and receptors, and other genes in broader signaling transduction cascades affecting pathways that are altered in response to treatment. Functional and positional candidate genes include retinoic acid and thyroid hormone receptors, retinaldehyde dehydrogenases and deiodinases, which synthesize the powerful morphogens, retinoic acid and triiodothyronine, and the enzymes involved in their inactivation. This review highlights selective evidence supporting the retinoid and thyroid hormone hypotheses of schizophrenia.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate correlations between thyroid function and severity of anxiety or panic attacks in patients with panic disorder. The authors examined 66 out-patients with panic disorder (medicated, n=41; non-medicated, n=25), and measured their free thriiodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine (T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Significant correlations between the thyroid hormone levels and clinical features were observed in the non-medicated patients. The more severe current panic attacks were, the higher the TSH levels were. In addition, severity of anxiety correlated negatively with free T4 levels. In this study, we discuss relationship between thyroid function and the clinical severity or features of panic disorder.
