Factors associated with reported snoring among elderly patients attending the geriatric centre in Nigeria

Snoring is associated with hypertension and diabetes mellitus among adults in north Sudan: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Different levels of association between snoring, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus (DM) are reported. There are few published studies on this topic in African countries, and no investigation was conducted in Sudan. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with snoring and the association between snoring, hypertension, and type 2 DM (T2DM) in northern Sudan.

METHODS

A community-based cross-sectional study using a multistage sampling technique was conducted in four villages in the River Nile state of northern Sudan from July to September 2021. Sociodemographic characteristics were collected using a questionnaire. Body mass index (BMI) was measured using standard methods, and a multivariate analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences® (SPSS®) for Windows, version 22.0.

RESULTS

Of the 384 adults, 193 (50.3%) were males and 191 (49.7%) were females. Of the adults, 38 (9.9%) were underweight, 121 (31.5%) had average weight, 113 (29.4%) were overweight, and 112 (29.2%) were obese. One hundred and six (27.6%) adults were snorers. Multivariate analysis showed that increasing age (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01‒1.04), increasing BMI (AOR = 1.04, 95 CI = 1.01‒1.08), obesity (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI = 1.10‒3.69), and alcohol consumption (AOR = 2.32, 95% CI = 1.14‒4.74) were positively associated with snoring. Of the 384 adults, 215 (56.0%) had hypertension. Multivariate analysis showed that increasing age (AOR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.02‒1.06), increasing BMI (AOR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.04‒1.13), female sex (AOR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.08‒2.73), and snoring (AOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.02‒2.82) were positively associated with hypertension. One hundred and six (27.6%) adults had T2DM. Multivariate analysis showed that increasing age (AOR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01‒1.05) and snoring (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.09‒2.91) were associated with T2DM.

CONCLUSION

Around one-fourth of the adults in Northern Sudan are snorers. Snoring is more common among obese adults. Snoring is associated with increased odds of hypertension and T2DM. Adults who snore must pay close attention to their blood pressure and blood glucose levels to prevent hypertension and DM.

The Feasibility of Using Smartphone Sensors to Track Insomnia, Depression, and Anxiety in Adults and Young Adults: Narrative Review

BACKGROUND

Since the era of smartphones started in early 2007, they have steadily turned into an accepted part of our lives. Poor sleep is a health problem that needs to be closely monitored before it causes severe mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression. Sleep disorders (eg, acute insomnia) can also develop to chronic insomnia if not treated early. More specifically, mental health problems have been recognized to have casual links to anxiety, depression, heart disease, obesity, dementia, diabetes, and cancer. Several researchers have used mobile sensors to monitor sleep and to study changes in individual mood that may cause depression and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE

Extreme sleepiness and insomnia not only influence physical health, they also have a significant impact on mental health, such as by causing depression, which has a prevalence of 18% to 21% among young adults aged 16 to 24 in the United Kingdom. The main body of this narrative review explores how passive data collection through smartphone sensors can be used in predicting anxiety and depression.

METHODS

A narrative review of the English language literature was performed. We investigated the use of smartphone sensors as a method of collecting data from individuals, regardless of whether the data source was active or passive. Articles were found from a search of Google Scholar records (from 2013 to 2020) with keywords including "mobile phone," "mobile applications," "health apps," "insomnia," "mental health," "sleep monitoring," "depression," "anxiety," "sleep disorder," "lack of sleep," "digital phenotyping," "mobile sensing," "smartphone sensors," and "sleep detector."

RESULTS

The 12 articles presented in this paper explain the current practices of using smartphone sensors for tracking sleep patterns and detecting changes in mental health, especially depression and anxiety over a period of time. Several researchers have been exploring technological methods to detect sleep using smartphone sensors. Researchers have also investigated changes in smartphone sensors and linked them with mental health and well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

The conducted review provides an overview of the possibilities of using smartphone sensors unobtrusively to collect data related to sleeping pattern, depression, and anxiety. This provides a unique research opportunity to use smartphone sensors to detect insomnia and provide early detection or intervention for mental health problems such as depression and anxiety if insomnia is detected.

Association Between Self-Reported Snoring and Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Snoring is a common condition. Previous studies have reported the relationships between snoring and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and/or its five components: hypertension, hyperglycemia, low-high density lipoprotein (low-HDL), high-triglyceride level, and abdominal obesity. However, conclusions have been inconsistent, and there has been no comprehensive summary on this. Therefore, we performed a systematic review on the relationships between snoring and MetS, including each of MetS' components.

Methods: A systematic review and a meta-analysis were conducted following the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology group and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines. Electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for publications from inception to 15 July 2020. The inverse-variance weighted method was used in the meta-analysis to calculate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to determine the association between snoring and MetS (and its components) through a fixed or random effect model. A restricted cubic spline regression model and the linear regression model were used in a two-stage dose–response meta-analysis to evaluate the non-linear and the linear trends between snoring frequency and MetS and its components.

Results: A total of 40 studies with 966,652 participants were included in this study. The pooled ORs between snoring and MetS and its components, hypertension, hyperglycemia, low-HDL, high-triglyceride level, and abdominal obesity, were 1.61 (95% CI, 1.43–1.78), 1.23 (95% CI, 1.15–1.31), 1.05 (95% CI, 1.04–1.07), 1.09 (95% CI, 1.00–1.18), 1.08 (95% CI, 1.00–1.17), and 1.75 (95% CI, 1.46–2.05), respectively. Non-linear trends were detected in the five associations except for low-HDL. A linear trend was detected in the association of snoring with hypertension, hyperglycemia, low-HDL, or abdominal obesity, with ORs of 1.07 (95% CI, 1.01–1.13), 1.05 (95% CI, 1.02–1.08), 1.03 (95% CI, 1.02–1.04), and 1.17 (95% CI, 1.16–2.89), respectively.

Conclusion: Snoring was a risk factor of MetS, and a dose–response relationship existed between the two. Timely intervention in identifying snorers can minimize as much as possible the risk of metabolic syndrome in those who snore.

The symptoms and risk of sleep apnea among adults in the United Arab Emirates

INTRODUCTION:

Recently, sleeping disorders and snoring are being recognized as a public health concern with various risk factors and health consequences. The main objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of snoring and sleep apnea among adults (20–60 years) in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates, UAE) and assess the major risk factors as well as the general knowledge among the population.

METHODS:

A self-administrated Questionnaire of five sections including both Berlin questionnaire (BQ) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scales (ESS) were given to a randomly selected population in Sharjah between the ages of 20–60 years. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22.0.

RESULTS:

Nearly 34.2% of the study population reported to be snorers, and 43.2% of snorers were at high risk of sleep apnea based on the BQ. Gender was significantly associated with snoring (P = 0.038), as 40.8% of males reported snoring compared to 28.7% of females. Elderlies (50–60 years) were at a higher risk, and obesity (body mass index >30) was considered to be a powerful risk factor as 46.8% of the obese participants reported snoring. Those who scored higher on the ESS were more likely to be snorers (P = 0.001) and were likely to fall into the high-risk category in the BQ (P = 0.007). In addition, smoking (P = 0.005), hypertension (P = 0.005), and nasal septal deviation (P = 0.024) were also considered as risk factors.

CONCLUSION:

Prevalence and major risk factors within the UAE are similar to those in other countries. Sleeping disorders and snoring campaigns and management facilities should be considered to raise the awareness about these issues and manage their risk factors.
