Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to residential greenness has been linked with improved sleep duration; however, longitudinal evidence is limited, and the potential mediating effect of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has yet to be assessed. METHODS We obtained data for 19,567 participants across seven counties in a prospective cohort in Ningbo, China. Greenness was estimated using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 250-m, 500-m and 1000-m buffer zones, while yearly average PM2.5 concentrations were measured using validated land-use regression models, both based on individual residential addresses. Sleep duration was assessed using structured questionnaires at baseline and during follow-up. The longitudinal associations between residential greenness and sleep duration were evaluated using linear mixed-effect models. Adjustments for PM2.5 and county were implemented. To identify the effect of greenness exposure on age-related declines in sleep duration, we included an interaction term between NDVI and visit (baseline and follow-up). Additionally, half-longitudinal mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate the potential mediating role of PM2.5 in this relationship. RESULTS Each interquartile range (IQR) increase in NDVI within 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m was associated with increases in sleep duration of 0.044 h (95% CI: 0.028,0.061), 0.045 h (95% CI: 0.028,0.062), and 0.031 h (95% CI: 0.013,0.049), respectively. Associations were attenuated after adjusting for PM2.5. Farmers, homemakers, and short-nap individuals benefited the most from greenness exposure. Higher greenness exposure significantly lowered PM2.5 levels, which was associated with a slower decline in sleep duration over the follow-up period. CONCLUSION Exposure to higher levels of residential greenness was associated with increased sleep duration and a slower decline in sleep over time. County-level heterogeneity in the effects of residential greenness on sleep duration was observed. PM2.5 partially mediating this relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This exploratory study aimed to determine the possible role of sleep in the relationships of depression and anxiety, with early surrogate markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, such as brachial artery (BA) diameter and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in women. METHODS We included 1,075 self-reported postmenopausal women, 45 to 75 years from the Heart Strategies Concentrating on Risk Evaluation Study. Exposure variables were depression and anxiety assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Outcome variables were BA diameter and CIMT measured using ultrasonography. The mediator, sleep, was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Symptom Questionnaire-Insomnia. Ordinary least squares regression was used for mediation analyses. RESULTS Of the 1,075 participants, 56.3% were White and 43.7% were Black. Our analyses revealed significant associations of depression and anxiety with sleep (P < 0.001 for all). After adjusting for confounders, depression was associated with max CIMT (R2 = 0.15, P = 0.004), but not BA diameter (R2 = 0.09, P = 0.083). Although the mediating role of sleep in the association between anxiety and BA diameter was not statistically significant [proportion mediated (CI); 0.41 (-2.77, 4.06); P = 0.219], we observed differential results within each racial group. Sleep appeared to partially mediate the association of anxiety with BA diameter in White [0.21 (0.54, 0.80); P = 0.044] women only. CONCLUSIONS We found preliminary indications that sleep might mediate the association of anxiety with BA diameter in White women but does not appear to serve as a mediator in all the other relationships we examined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension (HTN) is a major global public health concern. This study aims to identify gender differences to inform more effective prevention strategies and targeted management approaches. METHODS This prospective cohort study included 7,710 participants aged 40 to 70 years, with a mean follow-up duration of 5.2 years. HTN was defined using European hypertension management guidelines. A Cox regression model was employed to determine factors associated with HTN, adjusting for confounding variables effects. RESULTS During the mean follow-up period of 5.2 years, the incidence rate of hypertension was 21.54 per 1,000 person-years, with females exhibiting a higher incidence than males. Several significant predictors of HTN were identified. In men, key risk factors included age (60-70 years, 2.83-fold increase, 95% CI 2.05-3.92), high waist-to-height ratio (5.63-fold increase, 95% CI 2.42-13.07), smoking (2.68-fold increase, 95% CI 1.04-6.91), and opium use (1.93-fold increase, 95% CI 1.06-3.49). In women, significant predictors included age (60-70 years, 3.65-fold increase, 95% CI 2.59-5.15), contraceptive drug use (1.24-fold increase, 95% CI 1.01-1.52), high waist-to-height ratio (1.87-fold increase, 95% CI 1.19-2.92), pre-HTN (3.64-fold increase, 95% CI 3.01-4.40), and kidney stones (1.32-fold increase, 95% CI 1.06-1.65). CONCLUSION This study identified key predictors of hypertension (HTN) with notable gender differences. For men, significant risk factors included age, high waist-to-height ratio, smoking, and opium use; for women, the prominent predictors were age, contraceptive use, pre-HTN, and kidney stones. These findings highlight the need for gender-specific strategies in HTN prevention and management, focusing on modifiable risk factors by gender.

Abstract
People spend one-third of their lives sleeping, and adequate, restful sleep is an essential component of a healthy life. Conversely, disruption of sleep has been found to cause various physical and mental health problems. Emerging research has shown that blood pressure (BP) during sleep is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular events than conventional office BP or daytime BP. Thus, management of both sleep health and nighttime BP during sleep is important for preventing cardiovascular events. However, recent studies demonstrated that nighttime BP is poorly controlled compared with office BP and daytime BP. This finding is understandable, given the challenges in monitoring BP during sleep and the multiplicity of factors related to nocturnal hypertension and BP variability. This review summarizes recent evidence and considers future perspectives for the management of sleep and hypertension.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Observational studies suggest associations between insomnia and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but the causal mechanism remains unclear. We investigated the potential causal associations between insomnia and CVDs by a combined systematic meta-review and meta-analysis of observational and Mendelian randomization studies. METHODS We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for English-language articles from inception to July 11, 2023. Two reviewers independently screened the articles to minimize potential bias. We summarized the current evidence on the associations of insomnia with coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, myocardial infarction, hypertension, and stroke risk by combining meta-analyses of observational and Mendelian randomization studies. RESULTS Four meta-analyses of observational studies and 9 Mendelian randomization studies were included in the final data analysis. A systematic meta-review of observational studies provided strong evidence that insomnia is an independent risk factor for many CVDs, including atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, and hypertension. A meta-analysis of Mendelian randomization studies revealed that insomnia may be potentially causally related to coronary artery disease (odds ratio [OR] = 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.10-1.19, I2 = 97%), atrial fibrillation (OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.01-1.04, I2 = 94%), heart failure (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.03-1.06, I2 =97%), hypertension (OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.13-1.18, I2 = 28%), large artery stroke (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.05-1.24, I2 = 0%), any ischemic stroke (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.03-1.14, I2 = 60%), and primary intracranial hemorrhage (OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.05-1.27, I2 = 0%). No evidence suggested that insomnia is causally associated with cardioembolic or small vessel stroke. CONCLUSIONS Our results provide strong evidence supporting a possible causal association between insomnia and CVD risk. Strategies to treat insomnia may be promising targets for preventing CVDs. Abstract
It is increasingly thought that sleep is a lifestyle factor that contributes to hypertension. However, the correlation between sleep duration and hypertension in the Chinese population remains largely unexplored. This study utilized data from the 2009 China Health and Nutrition Survey to investigate the correlation between sleep duration and hypertension. Average hours of sleep per day were grouped into following categories: ≤6, 7-9, and ≥10 h. The frequency of hypertension and odds ratio (OR) were computed across different sleep duration categories. Individuals sleeping 7-9 h per day were designated as the control group. Logistic regression was utilized for multivariate analysis. Among the 9435 participants, the mean sleep duration was 7.9±1.2 h. The prevalence of hypertension was 34.1, 21.7, and 29.3% for individuals sleeping ≤6, 7-9, and ≥10 h per day, respectively. Following adjustments for age, gender, body mass index, and diabetes, a significant association was observed between prolonged (≥10 h) sleep duration and hypertension. Compared to those sleeping 7-9 h per day, the OR for hypertension was 1.21 (95%CI: 1.02-1.43, P=0.03) for individuals sleeping ≥10 h per day. This study suggested that sleeping ≥10 h per day is associated with a higher risk of hypertension in adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare intermediate-term risk of new-onset hypertension between normotensive patients with narcolepsy initiating sodium oxybate (SXB cohort) and those not initiating sodium oxybate (control cohort). PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study used MarketScan administrative claims data from January 1, 2014, to February 29, 2020. Eligible patients were 18 years of age or older with continuous enrollment (≥180 days before and after cohort entry), had one or more narcolepsy claims or a prescription fill for sodium oxybate, had no history of hypertension or antihypertensive medication use, and had no use of sodium oxybate within 13 months before cohort entry. Patients in the SXB and control cohorts were matched 1:2 for the propensity score to balance baseline characteristics. End points were (1) a composite of new-onset hypertension diagnosis or antihypertensive medication initiation and (2) new-onset hypertension diagnosis. Patients were monitored for 180 days, until outcome occurrence, sodium oxybate discontinuation (SXB cohort), or sodium oxybate initiation (control cohort). Risk per 100 patients was reported; differences were evaluated using logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The SXB and control cohorts included 954 and 1908 patients, respectively. Risk of new-onset hypertension diagnosis or antihypertensive medication initiation was higher in the SXB cohort than in the control cohort (6.60 vs 4.20 per 100 patients; OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.15 to 2.27). Risk of a new-onset hypertension diagnosis only in the SXB cohort was 0.94 per 100 patients and 0.52 per 100 patients in the control cohort (OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 0.73 to 4.46). CONCLUSION In this study, sodium oxybate use was associated with a new-onset hypertension diagnosis or antihypertensive medication initiation in normotensive patients with narcolepsy.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, and several studies have attempted to identify its risk factors. This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep duration and sleep quality, and the 7-year incidence of CVD among middle-aged and older Chinese individuals. A total of 6682 participants aged 45-90 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study database were included in this study. The authors estimated sleep duration and quality based on self-reported data of night sleep hours and disturbance symptoms, and examined the associations between them and the composite outcome of CVD using logistic regression models. A total of 1692 participants (25.32%) reported new CVD events during follow-up. Short sleep duration (< 6 h/night) was significantly associated with a higher risk of CVD in all three models (p < .05). However, this was not observed for long sleep duration (> 8 h/night). Additionally, participants with mild sleep disturbance in all three models, and severe sleep disturbance in Models 2 and 3 had a significantly higher risk of CVD (p < .05). After stratification by age and daytime napping, we still found a significant association between short sleep duration and CVD in individuals aged 45-59 years, and between sleep disturbance and CVD in non-nappers (p < .05). However, these associations were not significant in individuals aged ≥60 years or in nappers (p > .05). In conclusion, short sleep duration and sleep disturbance are both associated with an increased risk of CVD in middle-aged and older Chinese individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary diversity and sleep quality among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS The Lifestyle and Healthy Aging of Chinese Square Dancer Study is a prospective, community-based cohort study that enrolled participants aged 45 years and above from 2020 to 2021. Using the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire to investigate the diets of study participants, and using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Dietary diversity was assessed using two scoring methods covering ten food groups and 66 food items, respectively: the dietary diversity score (DDS) and the food variety score (FVS). The higher scores of DDS and FVS indicated greater dietary diversity and higher dietary quality. Logistic regression analysis explored the associations between these scores and sleep quality. RESULTS A total of 2409 individuals with completed information on PSQI and FFQ were included in this study, of whom 767 (31.8%) had poor sleep quality. Participants with higher DDS were associated with an 18% lower odds of poor sleep quality compared to those with low DDS (OR = 0.82, 95% CI, 0.68-0.98). Participants in the highest quartile of the FVS had a 32% lower odds of poor sleep quality than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.68, 95% CI, 0.52-0.89). CONCLUSIONS There was a positive correlation between higher FVS and DDS with better sleep quality. Therefore, ensuring a diverse diet may be beneficial for maintaining good sleep quality among middle-aged and older adults.
