Distinct Contributions of Genes and Environment to Visual Size Illusion and the Underlying Neural Mechanism

As exemplified by the Ebbinghaus illusion, the perceived size of an object can be significantly biased by its surrounding context. The phenomenon is experienced by humans as well as other species, hence likely evolutionarily adaptive. Here, we examined the heritability of the Ebbinghaus illusion using a combination of the classic twin method and multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Results show that genes account for over 50% of the variance in the strength of the experienced illusion. Interestingly, activations evoked by the Ebbinghaus stimuli in the early visual cortex are explained by genetic factors whereas those in the posterior temporal cortex are explained by environmental factors. In parallel, the feedforward functional connectivity between the occipital cortex and the temporal cortex is modulated by genetic effects whereas the feedback functional connectivity is entirely shaped by environment, despite both being significantly correlated with the strength of the experienced illusion. These findings demonstrate that genetic and environmental factors work in tandem to shape the context-dependent visual size illusion, and shed new light on the links among genes, environment, brain, and subjective experience.

Resting EEG in alpha band predicts individual differences in visual size perception

Human visual size perception results from an interaction of external sensory information and internal state. The cognitive mechanisms involved in the processing of context-dependent visual size perception have been found to be innate in nature to some extent, suggesting that visual size perception might correlate with human intrinsic brain activity. Here we recorded human resting alpha activity (8-12 Hz), which is an inverse indicator of sustained alertness. Moreover, we measured an object's perceived size in a two-alternative forced-choice manner and the Ebbinghaus illusion magnitude which is a classic illustration of context-dependent visual size perception. The results showed that alpha activity along the ventral visual pathway, including left V1, right LOC and bilateral inferior temporal gyrus, negatively correlated with an object's perceived size. Moreover, alpha activity in the left superior temporal gyrus positively correlated with size discrimination threshold and size illusion magnitude. The findings provide clear evidence that human visual size perception scales as a function of intrinsic alertness, with higher alertness linking to larger perceived size of objects and better performance in size discrimination and size illusion tasks, and suggest that individual variation in resting-state brain activity provides a neural explanation for individual variation in cognitive performance of normal participants.

Canonical visual size for real-world objects

Real-world objects can be viewed at a range of distances and thus can be experienced at a range of visual angles within the visual field. Given the large amount of visual size variation possible when observing objects, we examined how internal object representations represent visual size information. In a series of experiments which required observers to access existing object knowledge, we observed that real-world objects have a consistent visual size at which they are drawn, imagined, and preferentially viewed. Importantly, this visual size is proportional to the logarithm of the assumed size of the object in the world, and is best characterized not as a fixed visual angle, but by the ratio of the object and the frame of space around it. Akin to the previous literature on canonical perspective, we term this consistent visual size information the canonical visual size.

Update on epilepsy and cerebral localization

The field of epilepsy has contributed significantly to localization of neurologic function, particularly in the neocortex. Methodologies such as cortical stimulation, positron emission tomography, functional MRI, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation, surgical resection, and magnetoencephalography have been used successfully in patients with epilepsy to locate specific functions, primarily for the purpose of defining eloquent cortex before surgical resections. The left hemisphere serves language-related functions and verbal memory in most people, whereas the right hemisphere serves some language function in addition to perceiving most components of music and other forms of nonverbal material. Both hemispheres cooperate in understanding spatial relationships. Studies in patients with developmental abnormalities have enriched our understanding of localization of function within the cortex. Future studies may help us understand the sequence in which specific regions are activated during specific tasks and determine which regions are necessary for tasks and which are supplementary. The ability to predict preoperatively the effect of removal of specific tissues would benefit surgical planning for all patients who undergo cortical resections, including those with epilepsy.

Variability in cortical representations of speech sound perception

Recent brain mapping studies have provided new insights into the cortical systems that mediate human speech perception. Electrocortical stimulation mapping (ESM) is a brain mapping method that is used clinically to localize cortical functions in neurosurgical patients. Recent ESM studies have yielded new insights into the cortical systems that mediate speech perception and how these systems vary as a function of individual differences. ESM methods are described and findings from recent ESM studies of speech perception are reviewed. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed as they relate to current understanding of how individual differences in listening abilities are reflected in the underlying cortical representations.

Dissociable brain regions process object meaning and object structure during picture naming

Although imaging studies have indicated that the fusiform gyrus is important in tasks of picture naming, whether this region encodes an object's structure or its meaning is not clear. We used positron emission tomography to examine cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes in response to a picture naming task that varied on two dimensions: familiarity (or difficulty: hard vs easy) and category (tools vs animals). Results show that although familiarity effects are present in the frontal and left lateral posterior temporal cortex, they are absent from the fusiform gyrus. This provides strong evidence that the processing carried out in the fusiform gyrus relates to an object's structure, not to its meaning, and that the left posterior middle temporal gyrus instantiates in part the semantic network that represents the object's meaning.

Reperfusion of specific brain regions by raising blood pressure restores selective language functions in subacute stroke

We report a series of six single subject studies examining the effects of pharmacological blood pressure elevation on regional brain perfusion and language function. Previous reports indicate that hypoperfusion of specific brain regions, as delineated by magnetic resonance perfusion weighted imaging (PWI), is associated with disruption of selective lexical functions. On this basis, we hypothesized that reperfusion of the same regions, in the absence of infarct in that region, would restore the associated lexical function. We present five patients with impaired lexical-semantics associated with poor perfusion, but not infarction, of Brodmann's area 22 (BA 22), and one patient with impaired lexical-semantics and a superimposed deficit in retrieving the phonological representations of words, associated with poor perfusion Brodmann's area 37 (BA 37) as well as BA 22. Each patient was treated with induced blood pressure elevation to increase perfusion of the ischemic and dysfunctional tissue. Daily testing of naming and comprehension, with stimulus sets matched for frequency, familiarity, and length, showed improved lexical-semantics in the patients who showed reperfusion of BA 22 and improved oral naming (but not lexical-semantics) in the patient who showed reperfusion of BA 37. These cases illustrate that loss of function with hypoperfusion of a circumscribed area of the brain, and recovery of the same function with improved perfusion of that brain region, can reveal brain/language relationships prior to reorganization after brain injury.

Perceptual specificity in visual object priming: functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence for a laterality difference in fusiform cortex

Seeing an object on one occasion may facilitate or prime processing of the same object if it is later again encountered. Such priming may also be found -- but at a reduced level -- for different but perceptually similar objects that are alternative exemplars or 'tokens' of the initially presented object. We explored the neural correlates of this perceptual specificity using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures, contrasting neural activity when participants made object classification decisions (size judgments) regarding previously presented objects (repeated same), alternative exemplars of previously presented objects (repeated different), or entirely new objects (novel). Many frontal regions (including bilateral frontal operculum, bilateral posterior inferior frontal/precentral, left anterior inferior frontal, and superior frontal cortices) and multiple late visual and posterior regions (including middle occipital, fusiform, fusiform-parahippocampal, precuneus, and posterior cingulate, all bilaterally), demonstrated reduced neural activity for repeated compared to novel objects. Greater repetition-induced reductions were observed for same than for different exemplars in several of these regions (bilateral posterior inferior frontal, right precuneus, bilateral middle occipital, bilateral fusiform, bilateral parahippocampal and bilateral superior parietal). Additionally, right fusiform (occipitotemporal) cortex showed significantly less priming for different versus same exemplars than did left fusiform. These findings converge with behavioral evidence from divided visual field studies and with neuropsychological evidence underscoring the key role of right occipitotemporal cortex in processing specific visual form information; possible differences in the representational-functional role of left fusiform are discussed.

Function-specific high-probability "nodes" identified in posterior language cortex

PURPOSE

Posterior, "Wenicke's," language areas have a high degree of between-subject variability, as shown by electrical-stimulation mapping. We investigated the possibility of an organized structure in the distribution of posterior language areas.

METHODS

Extraoperative subdural grid stimulation was performed on 67 left hemisphere-dominant patients before resective epilepsy surgery during counting, naming, and reading. Intersubject-averaged language maps were generated in which stimulation disrupted only one language function and not the others, or combinations of language functions.

RESULTS

Language sites, although highly variable between subjects, were not organized randomly and appeared to be arranged into several focal, non-contiguous, higher probability "nodes" devoted to different aspects of language processing. Speech-arrest sites were concentrated in classic Wernicke's area. Areas where stimulation induced only reading errors were found in the posterior middle temporal gyrus and the inferior parietal lobule. These regions may correspond with an orthographic input lexicon. Areas eliciting only naming errors were found in the posterior inferior temporal gyrus extending into the mid-middle temporal gyrus and may represent a visual-representation input lexicon. Sites where stimulation elicited errors in both naming and reading were more variable in location than sites devoted to only one function, extended farther anteriorly along the temporal neocortex, and may correspond with a semantic lexicon.

CONCLUSIONS

The existence of high-probability nodes in posterior language cortex supports a modality-specific modular architecture and the possibility of a conserved, universal structure.

Temporal dynamics of verbal object comprehension

Knowledge of the stage composition and the temporal dynamics of human cognitive operations is critical for building theories of higher mental activity. This information has been difficult to acquire, even with different combinations of techniques such as refined behavioral testing, electrical recording/interference, and metabolic imaging studies. Verbal object comprehension was studied herein in a single individual, by using three tasks (object naming, auditory word comprehension, and visual word comprehension), two languages (English and Farsi), and four techniques (stimulus manipulation, direct cortical electrical interference, electrocorticography, and a variation of the technique of direct cortical electrical interference to produce time-delimited effects, called timeslicing), in a subject in whom indwelling subdural electrode arrays had been placed for clinical purposes. Electrical interference at a pair of electrodes on the left lateral occipitotemporal gyrus interfered with naming in both languages and with comprehension in the language tested (English). The naming and comprehension deficit resulted from interference with processing of verbal object meaning. Electrocorticography indices of cortical activation at this site during naming started 250-300 msec after visual stimulus presentation. By using the timeslicing technique, which varies the onset of electrical interference relative to the behavioral task, we found that completion of processing for verbal object meaning varied from 450 to 750 msec after current onset. This variability was found to be a function of the subject's familiarity with the objects.

Neuroperceptual differences in consonant and vowel discrimination: as revealed by direct cortical electrical interference

The effects of direct cortical electrical interference on consonant and vowel discrimination were investigated in five patients with implanted subdural electrode arrays. Without electrical interference, patients performance discriminating consonants and vowels was intact. With electrical interference, consonant discrimination was impaired at one electrode site in each patient on the superior temporal gyrus of the lateral left perisylvian cortex. Conversely, vowel and tone discrimination remained relatively intact when tested with electrical interference at the same site. Analysis of patients' consonant discrimination errors revealed that neither differences in acoustic temporal structure nor syllable position fully account for the consonant-vowel perceptual dissociations elicited. Our data suggest that at the cortical level consonant and vowel perception are intrinsically distinct perceptual phenomena. The selective impairment of consonant, but not vowel, discrimination further suggests that consonant and vowel perception are distinguished by differences in relative dependence on the functional--perhaps integrative--resources of the left lateral superior temporal gyrus.

Human brain language areas identified by functional magnetic resonance imaging

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) was used to identify candidate language processing areas in the intact human brain. Language was defined broadly to include both phonological and lexical-semantic functions and to exclude sensory, motor, and general executive functions. The language activation task required phonetic and semantic analysis of aurally presented words and was compared with a control task involving perceptual analysis of nonlinguistic sounds. Functional maps of the entire brain were obtained from 30 right-handed subjects. These maps were averaged in standard stereotaxic space to produce a robust "average activation map" that proved reliable in a split-half analysis. As predicted from classical models of language organization based on lesion data, cortical activation associated with language processing was strongly lateralized to the left cerebral hemisphere and involved a network of regions in the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes. Less consistent with classical models were (1) the existence of left hemisphere temporoparietal language areas outside the traditional "Wernicke area," namely, in the middle temporal, inferior temporal, fusiform, and angular gyri; (2) extensive left prefrontal language areas outside the classical "Broca area"; and (3) clear participation of these left frontal areas in a task emphasizing "receptive" language functions. Although partly in conflict with the classical model of language localization, these findings are generally compatible with reported lesion data and provide additional support for ongoing efforts to refine and extend the classical model.
