The Role of the Root in Spoken Word Recognition in Hebrew: An Auditory Gating Paradigm

Very few studies have investigated online spoken word recognition in templatic languages. In this study, we investigated both lexical (neighborhood density and frequency) and morphological (role of root morpheme) aspects of spoken word recognition of Hebrew, a templatic language, using the traditional gating paradigm. Additionally, we compared the traditional gating paradigm with a novel, phoneme-based gating paradigm. The phoneme-based approach allows for better control of information available at each gate. We found lexical effects with high-frequency words and low neighborhood density words being recognized at earlier gates. We also found that earlier access to root-morpheme information enabled word recognition at earlier gates. Finally, we showed that both the traditional gating paradigm and gating by phoneme paradigm yielded equivalent results.

Weak observer-level correlation and strong stimulus-level correlation between the McGurk effect and audiovisual speech-in-noise: A causal inference explanation

The McGurk effect is a widely used measure of multisensory integration during speech perception. Two observations have raised questions about the validity of the effect as a tool for understanding speech perception. First, there is high variability in perception of the McGurk effect across different stimuli and observers. Second, across observers there is low correlation between McGurk susceptibility and recognition of visual speech paired with auditory speech-in-noise, another common measure of multisensory integration. Using the framework of the causal inference of multisensory speech (CIMS) model, we explored the relationship between the McGurk effect, syllable perception, and sentence perception in seven experiments with a total of 296 different participants. Perceptual reports revealed a relationship between the efficacy of different McGurk stimuli created from the same talker and perception of the auditory component of the McGurk stimuli presented in isolation, both with and without added noise. The CIMS model explained this strong stimulus-level correlation using the principles of noisy sensory encoding followed by optimal cue combination within a common representational space across speech types. Because the McGurk effect (but not speech-in-noise) requires the resolution of conflicting cues between modalities, there is an additional source of individual variability that can explain the weak observer-level correlation between McGurk and noisy speech. Power calculations show that detecting this weak correlation requires studies with many more participants than those conducted to-date. Perception of the McGurk effect and other types of speech can be explained by a common theoretical framework that includes causal inference, suggesting that the McGurk effect is a valid and useful experimental tool.

The visual speech head start improves perception and reduces superior temporal cortex responses to auditory speech

Visual information about speech content from the talker's mouth is often available before auditory information from the talker's voice. Here we examined perceptual and neural responses to words with and without this visual head start. For both types of words, perception was enhanced by viewing the talker's face, but the enhancement was significantly greater for words with a head start. Neural responses were measured from electrodes implanted over auditory association cortex in the posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) of epileptic patients. The presence of visual speech suppressed responses to auditory speech, more so for words with a visual head start. We suggest that the head start inhibits representations of incompatible auditory phonemes, increasing perceptual accuracy and decreasing total neural responses. Together with previous work showing visual cortex modulation (Ozker et al., 2018b) these results from pSTG demonstrate that multisensory interactions are a powerful modulator of activity throughout the speech perception network.

Limits of Perceived Audio-Visual Spatial Coherence as Defined by Reaction Time Measurements

The ventriloquism effect describes the phenomenon of audio and visual signals with common features, such as a voice and a talking face merging perceptually into one percept even if they are spatially misaligned. The boundaries of the fusion of spatially misaligned stimuli are of interest for the design of multimedia products to ensure a perceptually satisfactory product. They have mainly been studied using continuous judgment scales and forced-choice measurement methods. These results vary greatly between different studies. The current experiment aims to evaluate audio-visual fusion using reaction time (RT) measurements as an indirect method of measurement to overcome these great variances. A two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) word recognition test was designed and tested with noise and multi-talker speech background distractors. Visual signals were presented centrally and audio signals were presented between 0° and 31° audio-visual offset in azimuth. RT data were analyzed separately for the underlying Simon effect and attentional effects. In the case of the attentional effects, three models were identified but no single model could explain the observed RTs for all participants so data were grouped and analyzed accordingly. The results show that significant differences in RTs are measured from 5° to 10° onwards for the Simon effect. The attentional effect varied at the same audio-visual offset for two out of the three defined participant groups. In contrast with the prior research, these results suggest that, even for speech signals, small audio-visual offsets influence spatial integration subconsciously.
