Influence of Target Parameters on Fixation Stability in Normal and Strabismic Monkeys

Inter-Ocular Fixation Instability of Amblyopia: Relationship to Visual Acuity, Strabismus, Nystagmus, Stereopsis, Vergence, and Age

PURPOSE

Amblyopia damages visual sensory and ocular motor functions. One manifestation of the damage is abnormal fixational eye movements. Tiny fixation movements are normal; however, when these exceed a normal range, the behavior is labeled "fixation instability" (FI). Here we compare FI between normal and amblyopic subjects, and evaluate the relationship between FI and severity of amblyopia, strabismus angle, nystagmus, stereopsis, vergence, and subject age.

METHODS

Fixation eye movements were recorded using infrared video-oculography from 47 controls (15.3 ± 12.2 years of age) and 104 amblyopic subjects (13.3 ± 11.2 years of age) during binocular and monocular viewing. FI and vergence instability were quantified as the bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA). We also calculated the ratio of FI between the 2 eyes: right eye/left eye for controls, amblyopic eye/fellow eye for amblyopes. Multiple regression analysis evaluated how FI related to a range of visuo-motor measures.

RESULTS

During binocular viewing, the FI of fellow and amblyopic eye, vergence instability, and inter-ocular FI ratios were least in anisometropic and most in mixed amblyopia (P < .05). Each correlated positively with the strabismus angle (P < .01). During monocular viewing, subjects with deeper amblyopia (P < .01) and larger strabismus angles (P < .05) had higher inter-ocular FI ratios. In all, 27% of anisometropic and >65% of strabismic/mixed amblyopes had nystagmus. Younger age and nystagmus increased FI and vergence instability (P < .05) but did not affect the inter-ocular FI ratios (P > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Quantitative recording of perturbed eye movements in children reveal a major functional deficit linked to amblyopia. Imprecise fixation, measured as inter-ocular FI ratios, may be used as a robust marker for amblyopia and strabismus severity. Eye Movement Characteristics for Predicting a Transition to Psychosis: Longitudinal Changes and Implications

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS

Substantive inquiry into the predictive power of eye movement (EM) features for clinical high-risk (CHR) conversion and their longitudinal trajectories is currently sparse. This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of machine learning predictive models relying on EM indices and examine the longitudinal alterations of these indices across the temporal continuum.

STUDY DESIGN

EM assessments (fixation stability, free-viewing, and smooth pursuit tasks) were performed on 140 CHR and 98 healthy control participants at baseline, followed by a 1-year longitudinal observational study. We adopted Cox regression analysis and constructed random forest prediction models. We also employed linear mixed-effects models (LMMs) to analyze longitudinal changes of indices while stratifying by group and time.

STUDY RESULTS

Of the 123 CHR participants who underwent a 1-year clinical follow-up, 25 progressed to full-blown psychosis, while 98 remained non-converters. Compared with the non-converters, the converters exhibited prolonged fixation durations, decreased saccade amplitudes during the free-viewing task; larger saccades, and reduced velocity gain during the smooth pursuit task. Furthermore, based on 4 baseline EM measures, a random forest model classified converters and non-converters with an accuracy of 0.776 (95% CI: 0.633, 0.882). Finally, LMMs demonstrated no significant longitudinal alterations in the aforementioned indices among converters after 1 year.

CONCLUSIONS

Aberrant EMs may precede psychosis onset and remain stable after 1 year, and applying eye-tracking technology combined with a modeling approach could potentially aid in predicting CHRs evolution into overt psychosis.

Eye Tracking to Assess the Functional Consequences of Vision Impairment: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Eye tracking is a promising method for objectively assessing functional visual capabilities, but its suitability remains unclear when assessing the vision of people with vision impairment. In particular, accurate eye tracking typically relies on a stable and reliable image of the pupil and cornea, which may be compromised by abnormalities associated with vision impairment (e.g., nystagmus, aniridia).

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to establish the degree to which video-based eye tracking can be used to assess visual function in the presence of vision impairment.

DATA SOURCES

A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases, encompassing literature from inception to July 2022.

STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, PARTICIPANTS, AND INTERVENTIONS

Studies included in the review used video-based eye tracking, included individuals with vision impairment, and used screen-based tasks unrelated to practiced skills such as reading or driving.

STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS

The included studies were assessed for quality using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology assessment tool. Data extraction and synthesis were performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.

RESULTS

Our analysis revealed that five common tests of visual function were used: (i) fixation stability, (ii) smooth pursuit, (iii) saccades, (iv) free viewing, and (v) visual search. The studies reported considerable success when testing individuals with vision impairment, yielding usable data from 96.5% of participants.

LIMITATIONS

There was an overrepresentation of conditions affecting the optic nerve or macula and an underrepresentation of conditions affecting the anterior segment or peripheral retina.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS

The results offer promise for the use of eye tracking to assess the visual function of a considerable proportion of those with vision impairment. Based on the findings, we outline a framework for how eye tracking can be used to test visual function in the presence of vision impairment.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis: Evidence from eye-tracking measures

Emerging evidence suggested that people with severe mental disorders were more vulnerable to the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, few researches investigated the influence of global pandemics on people at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on clinical symptoms, psychological distress, and eye-tracking characteristics in CHR individuals and healthy participants. Forty-nine CHR individuals and 50 healthy controls (HC) were assessed by PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Perceived Stress Scale, 10-item version (PSS-10), and Coronavirus Impact Scale (CIS). Eye movement performances were measured by the tests of fixation stability, free-viewing, and anti-saccade. According to the mean score of CIS, participants were stratified into high-impact (n = 35) and low-impact (n = 64) subgroups. Compared with the HC group, CHR participants reported significantly higher levels of post-traumatic symptoms caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and showed abnormalities in most of the eye movement indexes. Among the altered indexes, the saccade amplitude of fixation stability test (far distractor), the scan path length of free-viewing test, and the accuracy of anti-saccade test were negatively affected by the severity of impact level in the CHR group. Moreover, the altered eye movement indexes were significantly associated with the total scores of CIS, PCL-5, and subscales of the Scale of Prodromal Syndromes (SOPS) among CHR individuals. Overall, our findings suggested the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the eye movement characteristics of CHR individuals. The present study provides valuable information on physiological distress related to the COVID-19 pandemic and sensitive neuropsychological biomarkers that interacted with social and environment stress in the CHR population.

Eye movement indices as predictors of conversion to psychosis in individuals at clinical high risk

Eye movement abnormalities have been established as an "endophenotype" of schizophrenia. However, less is known about the possibility of these abnormalities as biomarkers for psychosis conversion among clinical high risk (CHR) populations. In the present study, 108 CHR individuals and 70 healthy controls (HC) underwent clinical assessments and eye-tracking tests, comprising fixation stability and free-viewing tasks. According to three-year follow-up outcomes, CHR participants were further stratified into CHR-converter (CHR-C; n = 21) and CHR-nonconverter (CHR-NC; n = 87) subgroups. Prediction models were constructed using Cox regression and logistic regression. The CHR-C group showed more saccades of the fixation stability test (no distractor) and a reduced saccade amplitude of the free-viewing test than HC. Moreover, the CHR-NC group exhibited excessive saccades and an increased saccade amplitude of the fixation stability test (no distractor; with distractor) compared with HC. Furthermore, two indices could effectively discriminate CHR-C from CHR-NC with an area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.80, including the saccade number of the fixation stability test (no distractor) and the saccade amplitude of the free-viewing test. Combined with negative symptom scores of the Scale of Prodromal Symptoms, the area was 0.81. These findings support that eye movement alterations might emerge before the onset of clinically overt psychosis and could assist in predicting psychosis transition among CHR populations.

Quantitative Evaluation of the Association Between Fixation Stability and Phoria During Short-Term Binocular Viewing

Purpose

Fixation stability for binocular anomalies with a phoria cannot be detected by direct observations. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate fixation stability using an eye tracker rather than direct directions in binocular vision with abnormal and normal phorias.

Methods

Thirty-five and 25 participants with abnormal and normal phoria, respectively, were included in the study. The horizontal and vertical gaze points and convergence were recorded for 10 s using a remote eye tracker while binocularly viewing a target on a display screen 550 mm away. Fixation stability was quantified using bivariate contour ellipse areas (BCEA).

Results

The fixation stability for all participants-based evaluations as a single cluster in the abnormal phoria group was lower than that in the normal phoria group (p = 0.005). There was no difference between the two groups in the evaluation based on the BCEA for each participant-based evaluation (p = 0.66). Fixation stability was also more related to convergence for the abnormal phoria group than for the normal phoria group (r = 0.769, p < 0.001; r = 0.417, p = 0.038, respectively).

Conclusion

As the first study to evaluate fixation stability using an eye-tracker to differentiate between abnormal and normal phoria for non-strabismus, these findings may provide evidence for improving the evaluation of binocular vision not detected with clinical diagnostic tests.

Effect of Viewing Conditions on Fixation Eye Movements and Eye Alignment in Amblyopia

Purpose

Patients with amblyopia are known to have fixation instability, which arises from alteration of physiologic fixation eye movements (FEMs) and nystagmus. We assessed the effects of monocular, binocular, and dichoptic viewing on FEMs and eye alignment in patients with and without fusion maldevelopment nystagmus (FMN).

Methods

Thirty-four patients with amblyopia and seven healthy controls were recruited for this study. Eye movements were recorded using infrared video-oculography during (1) fellow eye viewing (FEV), (2) amblyopic eye viewing (AEV), (3) both eye viewing (BEV), and (4) dichoptic viewing (DcV) at varying fellow eye (FE) contrasts. The patients were classified per the clinical type of amblyopia and FEM waveforms into those without nystagmus, those with nystagmus with and without FMN. Fixational saccades and intersaccadic drifts, quick and slow phases of nystagmus, and bivariate contour ellipse area were analyzed in the FE and amblyopic eye (AE).

Results

We found that FEMs are differentially affected with increased amplitude of quick phases of FMN observed during AEV than BEV and during DcV at lower FE contrasts. Increased fixation instability was seen in anisometropic patients at lower FE contrasts. Incomitance of eye misalignment was seen with the greatest increase during FEV. Strabismic/mixed amblyopia patients without FMN were more likely to demonstrate a fixation switch where the AE attends to the target during DcV than patients with FMN.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that FEM abnormalities modulate with different viewing conditions as used in various amblyopia therapies. Increased FEM abnormalities could affect the visual function deficits and may have treatment implications.

Interocular Suppression in Primary Visual Cortex in Strabismus

People with strabismus acquired during childhood do not experience diplopia (double vision). To investigate how perception of the duplicate image is suppressed, we raised two male monkeys with alternating exotropia by disinserting the medial rectus muscle in each eye at age four weeks. Once the animals were mature, they were brought to the laboratory and trained to fixate a small spot while recordings were made in primary visual cortex (V1). Drifting gratings were presented to the receptive fields of 500 single neurons for eight interleaved conditions: (1) right eye monocular; (2) left eye monocular; (3) right eye's field, right eye fixating; (4) right eye's field, left eye fixating; (5) left eye's field, right eye fixating; (6) left eye's field, left eye fixating; (7) both eyes' fields, right eye fixating; (8) both eyes' fields, left eye fixating. As expected, ocular dominance histograms showed a monocular bias compared with normal animals, but many cells could still be driven via both eyes. Overall, neuronal responses were not affected by switches in ocular fixation. Individual neurons exhibited binocular interactions, but mean population indices indicated no net interocular suppression or facilitation. Even neurons located in cortex with reduced cytochrome oxidase (CO) activity, representing portions of the nasal visual field where perception is suppressed during binocular viewing, showed no net inhibition. These data indicate that V1 neurons do not appear to reflect strabismic suppression and therefore the elimination of diplopia is likely to be mediated at a higher cortical level.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT In patients with strabismus, images fall on non-corresponding points in the two retinas. Only one image is perceived, because signals emanating from the other eye that convey the duplicate image are suppressed. The benefit is that diplopia is prevented, but the penalty is that the visual feedback required to adjust eye muscle tone to realign the globes is eliminated. Here, we report the first electrophysiological recordings from the primary visual cortex (V1) in awake monkeys raised with strabismus. The experiments were designed to reveal how perception of double images is avoided.

Part time patching treatment outcomes in children with amblyopia with and without fusion maldevelopment nystagmus: An eye movement study

PURPOSE

We investigated how the abnormalities of fixation eye movements (FEMs) of the amblyopic eye were linked with treatment outcomes following part-time patching therapy in children with amblyopia.

METHODS

We recruited 53 patients, with at least 12 months of patching, and measured FEMs at the end of treatment. Subjects were classified based on FEM waveforms (those without nystagmus = 21, those with nystagmus without fusion maldevelopment nystagmus (FMN) = 21, and those with FMN = 11) and based on clinical type of amblyopia (anisometropic = 18, strabismic = 6, and mixed = 29). The treatment outcomes such as duration of treatment of receiving part-time patching therapy, visual acuity and stereo-acuity deficits at the end of treatment were determined. Bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA), fast (fixational saccade/quick phases), and slow (inter-saccadic drifts/slow phases) FEMs of the fellow and amblyopic eye were analyzed.

RESULTS

Anisometropic group had less residual amblyopia (0.23±0.19logMAR acuity) compared to strabismic/mixed (0.36±0.26) groups (p = 0.007). Treatment duration in patients without nystagmus was lower (12.6±9.5months) compared to nystagmus without FMN (25.6±23.2) and FMN (29.5±20.4) groups (p = 0.006). Patients without nystagmus had better stereopsis at the end of treatment (2.3±0.84logarcsecs) compared to nystagmus without FMN (2.6±0.84) group (p = 0.003). The majority of patients with FMN (8/11) had absent stereopsis. BCEA of the amblyopic eye was higher in patients with greater residual visual acuity deficits in patients without nystagmus. No such association was seen in Nystagmus no FMN and FMN groups. Increased amplitude of fast FEMs, increased eye position variance and eye velocity of slow FEMs were seen in patients who had received longer duration of part time patching therapy and in those with greater residual amblyopia, and poor stereopsis at the end of treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

Assessment of FEM waveforms and fast and slow FEM characteristics are important measures while describing fixation instability in amblyopia. Several FEM abnormalities were associated with stereo-acuity and visual acuity deficits and treatment duration in patients with amblyopia treated with part time patching therapy.

Fixational Eye Movement Waveforms in Amblyopia: Characteristics of Fast and Slow Eye Movements

Fixational eye movements comprise of fast microsaccades alternating with slow intersaccadic drifts. These physiologic eye movements play an important role in visual perception. Amblyopic patients are known to have fixation instability, particularly of the amblyopic eye. We examined eye movement abnormalities that contribute to this instability. We found that fixation stability is affected by the presence of fusion maldevelopment nystagmus (FMN). However, some amblyopes can have nystagmus without nasally directed slow phases and reversal in direction of the quick phase on ocular occlusion, features seen in FMN. In patients without nystagmus, we found increased amplitude of fixational saccades and inter-saccadic drifts. We categorized amblyopia patients by type (anisometropic, strabismic, or mixed) and eye movement waveform (no nystagmus, nystagmus without FMN, and FMN). We found specific fast and slow eye movement abnormalities of the fellow and amblyopic eye during fellow, amblyopic and both eyes viewing conditions across eye movement waveforms and types of amblyopia. These eye movement abnormalities can serve as biomarkers that can predict the impact of amblyopia as measured by visual acuity and stereopsis. Evaluation of fixational eye movements in amblyopia could be important to diagnose these common eye diseases and predict treatment effectiveness.

Fixation Stability with Bessel Beams

SIGNIFICANCE

Ophthalmic imaging instruments that require stable fixation can benefit by using Bessel beams in the form of monitor-based Bessel images.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate fixation stability using laser Bessel and Gaussian beams and monitor-based images of these targets.

METHODS

The right eyes of 16 participants were presented with seven fixation targets: monitor-based images of a bull's eye/cross hair, a Gaussian beam, a Bessel beam with four rings and a Bessel beam with three rings; laser Gaussian beam, laser Bessel beam with four rings, and laser Bessel beam with three rings. Participants fixated target centers for five runs, in which each run presented the seven targets for 20 seconds each. An Eye Tribe tracker sampled eye positions at 30 Hz. Standard deviations along horizontal (σx) and vertical meridians (σy) and areas of bivariate contour ellipses (BCEAs) of fixation positions were calculated, and statistical significances of target differences for these parameters were determined.

RESULTS

Average σx, σy, and BCEAs ranged from 0.26 to 0.35°, 0.38 to 0.55°, and 0.78 to 1.31 degrees, respectively. Target differences in σx (χ6 = 13.0, P = .04), (σy) (χ6 = 36.819, P < .001), and BCEA (χ6 = 34.406, P < .001) were statistically significant. There were significant post hoc differences between some of the target pairs for σy and BCEA, but not for σx. Monitor-based Bessel beam targets provided significantly smaller σy and BCEAs than the bull's eye/cross hair combination and the monitor- and laser-based Gaussian beam targets.

CONCLUSIONS

Monitor-based images of Bessel beams provided better fixation targets than did a bull's eye/cross hair combination, monitor-based Gaussian images, and laser Gaussian beams, but no claim can be made that laser Bessel beams provide better fixation targets than do laser Gaussian beams. Monitor-based Bessel images should be useful for ophthalmic imaging instruments requiring stable fixation.

Fixation instability during binocular viewing in anisometropic and strabismic children

PURPOSE

Strabismus or anisometropia disrupts binocularity and results in fixation instability, which is increased with amblyopia. Fixation instability has typically been assessed for each eye individually. Recently, vergence instability was reported in exotropic adults and monkeys during binocular viewing. We evaluated fixation instability during binocular viewing in children treated for anisometropia and/or strabismus.

METHODS

160 children age 4-12 years with treated esotropia and/or anisometropia (98 amblyopic, 62 nonamblyopic) were compared to 46 age-similar controls. Fixation instability was recorded during binocular fixation of a 0.3 deg diameter dot for 20 s using a 500 Hz remote video binocular eye tracker (EyeLink 1000; SR Research). The bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA; log deg²) for fixation instability was calculated for each eye (nonpreferred, preferred) and for vergence instability (left eye position - right eye position). Best-corrected visual acuity, Randot Preschool stereoacuity, and extent of suppression scotoma (Worth 4-Dot) were also obtained.

RESULTS

When binocularly viewing, both amblyopic and nonamblyopic children treated for anisometropia and/or strabismus had larger fixation instability and vergence instability than controls. Amblyopia primarily added to the instability of the nonpreferred eye. Anisometropic children had less nonpreferred eye instability and vergence instability than those with strabismus or combined mechanism. Nonpreferred eye instability and vergence instability were related to poorer stereoacuity and a larger suppression scotoma. Preferred eye instability was not related to any visual outcome measure. No relationships were found with visual acuity.

CONCLUSIONS

Fixation instability and vergence instability during binocular viewing suggests that discordant binocular visual experience during childhood, especially strabismus, interferes with ocular motor development. Amblyopia adds to instability of the nonpreferred eye. Vergence instability may limit potential for recovery of binocular vision in these children.

Fixational Saccades and Their Relation to Fixation Instability in Strabismic Monkeys

Purpose

To evaluate the contribution of fixational saccades toward fixation instability in strabismic monkeys.

Methods

Binocular eye movements were measured as six experimental monkeys (five strabismic monkeys and one monkey with downbeat nystagmus) and one normal monkey fixated targets of two shapes (Optotype, Disk) and two sizes (0.5°, 2°) during monocular and binocular viewing. Fixational saccades were detected using an unsupervised clustering algorithm.

Results

When compared with the normal monkey, amplitude and frequency of fixational saccades in both the viewing and nonviewing eye were greater in 3 of 5 strabismic monkeys (1-way ANOVA on ranks P < 0.001; median amplitude in the normal monkey viewing eye: 0.33°; experimental animals: median amplitude range 0.20-0.82°; median frequency in the normal monkey: 1.35/s; experimental animals: median frequency range 1.3-3.7/s). Increase in frequency of fixational saccades was largely due to quick phases of ongoing nystagmus. Fixational saccade amplitude was increased significantly (3-way ANOVA; P < 0.001) but by small magnitude depending on target shape and size (mean difference between disk and optotype targets = 0.02°; mean difference between 2° and 0.5° targets = 0.1°). Relationship between saccade amplitude and the Bivariate Contour Ellipse Area (BCEA) was nonlinear, showing saturation of saccade amplitude. Fixation instability in depth was significantly greater in strabismic monkeys (vergence BCEA: 0.63 deg2-2.15 deg2) compared with the normal animal (vergence BCEA: 0.15 deg2; P < 0.001).

Conclusions

Increased fixational instability in strabismic monkeys is only partially due to increased amplitude and more frequent fixational saccades. Target parameter effects on fixational saccades are similar to previous findings of target effects on BCEA.

Abnormal fixational eye movements in strabismus

INTRODUCTION

Fixational saccades are miniature eye movements that constantly change the gaze during attempted visual fixation. Visually guided saccades and fixational saccades represent an oculomotor continuum and are produced by common neural machinery. Patients with strabismus have disconjugate binocular horizontal saccades. We examined the stability and variability of eye position during fixation in patients with strabismus and correlated the severity of fixational instability with strabismus angle and binocular vision.

METHODS

Eye movements were measured in 13 patients with strabismus and 16 controls during fixation and visually guided saccades under monocular viewing conditions. Fixational saccades and intersaccadic drifts were analysed in the viewing and non-viewing eye of patients with strabismus and controls.

RESULTS

We found an increase in fixational instability in patients with strabismus compared with controls. We also found an increase in the disconjugacy of fixational saccades and intrasaccadic ocular drift in patients with strabismus compared with controls. The disconjugacy was worse in patients with large-angle strabismus and absent stereopsis. There was an increase in eye position variance during drifts in patients with strabismus. Our findings suggest that both fixational saccades and intersaccadic drifts are abnormal and likely contribute to the fixational instability in patients with strabismus.

DISCUSSION

Fixational instability could be a useful tool for mass screenings of children to diagnose strabismus in the absence of amblyopia and latent nystagmus. The increased disconjugacy of fixational eye movements and visually guided saccades in patients with strabismus reflects the disruption of the fine-tuning of the motor and visual systems responsible for achieving binocular fusion in these patients.

Longitudinal Evaluation of Eye Misalignment and Eye Movements Following Surgical Correction of Strabismus in Monkeys

Purpose

Strabismus correction surgery is well documented in both the literature and practice with varying levels of success and permanence. Our goal was to characterize longitudinal changes in eye alignment and eye movements following strabismus correction surgery in a monkey model for developmental strabismus.

Methods

We studied two juvenile rhesus monkeys with exotropia previously induced via an optical prism-rearing paradigm in infancy. Eye misalignment was corrected via a resection–recession surgery of the horizontal rectus muscles of one eye. Binocular search coils were used to collect eye movement data during smooth-pursuit, saccades, and fixation tasks before surgical treatment, immediately after surgery, and through 6 months after treatment.

Results

Both animals showed an immediate ∼70% reduction in misalignment as a consequence of surgery that regressed to a 20%–40% improvement by 6 months after treatment. Significant changes were observed in saccade and smooth-pursuit gain of the nonviewing eye after surgery, which also reverted to presurgical values by 6 months. A temporary improvement in fixation stability of the nonviewing eye was observed after surgery; naso-temporal (N/T) asymmetry of monocular smooth-pursuit remained unchanged.

Conclusions

Surgical realignment is followed by plastic changes that often lead to reversal of surgery effects. Immediate improvement in misalignment and changes in eye movement gains are likely a result of contractility changes at the level of the extraocular muscle, whereas longer-term effects are likely a combination of neural and muscle adaptation.

Disrupting binocular vision in infancy leads to strabismus and oftentimes to a variety of associated visual sensory deficits and oculomotor abnormalities. Investigation of this disorder has been aided by the development of various animal models, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. In comparison to studies of binocular visual responses in cortical structures, investigations of neural oculomotor structures that mediate the misalignment and abnormalities of eye movements have been more recent, and these studies have shown that different brain areas are intimately involved in driving several aspects of the strabismic condition, including horizontal misalignment, dissociated deviations, A and V patterns of strabismus, disconjugate eye movements, nystagmus, and fixation switch. The responses of cells in visual and oculomotor areas that potentially drive the sensory deficits and also eye alignment and eye movement abnormalities follow a general theme of disrupted calibration, lower sensitivity, and poorer specificity compared with the normally developed visual oculomotor system.
