Abstract
BACKGROUND Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an allergic disease characterized by the dominant differentiation of T helper cell 2 (Th2). BACH2 plays a key role in regulating Th2 immune response. This study aimed to explore the association between BACH2 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and susceptibility to AR. METHODS Han population from northern Shaanxi, China was chosen as subjects. After the DNA extraction from the peripheral blood of subjects, genotyping was completed through the Agena MassARRAY platform. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association. Multivariate dimensionality reduction (MDR) was used to evaluate the effect of the interaction between 'SNP-SNP' on susceptibility to AR. Using false-positive report probability (FPRP) analysis to test whether the significant results obtained in this study were noteworthy. RESULTS BACH2-rs905670 and -rs2134814 were significantly associated with increased risk of AR. The mutant allele 'A' of rs905670 (OR = 1.36, p = 0.018) and mutant allele 'G' of rs2134814 (OR = 1.34, p = 0.027) were risk genetic factors for AR. The above genetic association was further observed in the stratified analysis: BACH2-rs905670 and-rs2134814 were significantly associated with an increased risk of AR in females, aging older than 43 years, and participants working and living in the loess hills (OR > 1, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION BACH2-rs905670 and -rs2134814 are significantly associated with increasing AR risk.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between environmental and meteorological factors and the incidence of epistaxis in different age groups in Yangzhou, as well as to provide a reference and theoretical basis for epistaxis prevention and treatment. Methods: The patients with epistaxis who were treated in Northern Jiangsu People's Hospital of Jiangsu Province from January 2016 to December 2020 were reviewed, and the relationship between the local environmental meteorological factors at the time of onset and the incidence of epistaxis in different age groups was analyzed, and the potential environmental meteorological risk factors of epistaxis in each age group were determined by Stepwise logistic regression. Results: From 2016 to 2020, there were 24,407 cases of epistaxis, mostly males and children. The effects of O3 concentration, average humidity, average temperature, NO2 concentration, sunshine duration, average wind speed, CO concentration, and temperature difference on the study population were statistically significant (P < .05). Analysis by age group showed that there were differences in environmental and meteorological factors related to epistaxis in different age groups. Conclusions: In Yangzhou, epistaxis is more prevalent among males and children. The environmental meteorological factors are related to the incidence of epistaxis in Yangzhou, among which the average humidity and temperature difference are negatively correlated with the incidence of epistaxis. In contrast O3 concentration, average temperature, NO2 concentration, sunshine duration, average wind speed, and CO concentration are positively correlated with epistaxis occurrence. However, the impact of these environmental and meteorological factors varies in different age groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Airborne pollen is a crucial risk factor in allergic rhinitis (AR). The severity of AR symptoms can vary based on pollen type and concentration. This study aimed to estimate the association between exposure to different pollen types and AR risk. METHODS We obtained data from patients admitted to the Beijing Tongren Hospital for AR, and data on pollen concentration, meteorological factors, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from 13 districts in Beijing from 2016 to 2019. We used a time-stratified case-crossover study design and calculated odds ratios (ORs) related to the risk of AR associated with a 10 grain/1000 mm2 increase in total pollen concentrations for specific pollen types. A stratified analysis was conducted to assess whether the associations were varied by age and sex. RESULTS The OR of AR associated with a 10 grain/1000 mm2 increase in the 7-day average pollen concentration was 1.014 (95% CI: 1.014, 1.015), 1.076 (95% CI: 1.070, 1.082), 1.024 (95% CI: 1.023, 1.025), 1.042 (95% CI: 1.039, 1.045), 1.142 (95% CI: 1.137, 1.147), 1.092 (95% CI: 1.088, 1.097), 1.046 (95% CI: 1.035, 1.058), and 1.026 (95% CI: 1.024, 1.028) for total pollen, Ulmus, Cupressaceae, Populus, Fraxinus, Pinus, Betula, and Artemisia, respectively. Both tree pollen (Ulmus, Cupressaceae, Populus, Fraxinus, Betula, and Pinus) and weed pollen (Artemisia, Chenopodium, and Humulus) were correlated with an increased risk of AR. These associations remained consistent across distinct subgroups defined by both age and sex. CONCLUSION Exposure to pollen from trees and weeds might be associated with an increased risk of AR. This research provides valuable scientific support for both clinical practitioners and patients with AR regarding the hazards of pollen exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Definitive knowledge of the 24-hour cardiac autonomic activity in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) is lacking. Thus, we aimed to evaluate heart rate variability (HRV), which is used to measure cardiac autonomic activity by 24-hour Holter monitoring in patients with AR. METHODS We enrolled 32 patients who visited our clinic and were diagnosed with AR. The control group was selected four-fold (n = 128) by matching (age, sex, hypertension, and diabetes) in the AR group from a Holter registry in the cardiology department. The HRV results, which were measured using 24-hour Holter monitoring, were compared between the AR and control groups. RESULTS All time-domain parameters of HRV revealed no differences between the groups. However, among the frequency domain parameters of HRV, the low-frequency to high-frequency ratio and low-frequency power in normalized units were significantly lower in the AR group. Conversely, high-frequency power in normalized units was significantly higher in the AR group. In the multiple regression analysis, AR was independently associated with sympathetic withdrawal (adjusted odds ratio = 3.393, P = 0.020) after adjusting for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest differences in cardiac autonomic activity which are related with sympathetic withdrawal in patients with AR compared with that in the normal population over 24 hours.

Abstract
Background Environmental factors and genetic predisposition can influence the occurrence and development of AR. Toll-like receptor 1 (TLR1) belongs to the TLR receptor family, which plays a fundamental role in the activation of innate immunity. This study aimed to explore the association between TLR1 genetic loci and AR susceptibility in the Han Chinese from northern China. Methods Genotyping of three SNPs in the TLR1 has proceeded using the Agena MassARRAY platform. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to assess the correlation between candidate SNPs and AR susceptibility. Using FPRP (false-positive report probability analysis) to detect whether the positive results are noteworthy findings. The SNP-SNP interactions were detected by multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR). Results TLR1-rs72493538 (Allele "G": OR=0.77, p = 0.034) and -rs76600635 (Allele "G": OR=0.75, p = 0.024) were associated with reducing the risk of AR among Han Chinese in northern China. In addition, we found evidence that TLR1-rs72493538 (males, participants with aging > 43 years, or coming from the wind-blown sand region) and -rs76600635 (males, participants with BMI ≤ 24 kg/m2, or coming from the wind-blown sand region) were associated with AR risk in stratified analyses. FPRP showed that all positive results are noteworthy findings. MDR analysis showed that a two-loci genetic model composed of rs72493538 and rs76600635 can be chosen as the best genetic model to predict the risk of AR. Conclusion TLR1-rs72493538 and -rs76600635 have a close association with reducing the risk of AR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of sensitivity to common inhaled and food allergens among children with allergic rhinitis (AR) in Changzhou in eastern China and provide a basis for epidemiological research of pediatric allergic rhinitis and allergen avoidance in this region. METHODS This was a retrospective observational study, a total of 1248 children with AR were enrolled at the Third People's Hospital of Changzhou between January 2018 and December 2019. The serum-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) to 19 kinds of inhaled and food allergens and serum total IgE were detected with the AllergyScreen test (Mediwiss Analytic GmbH, Moers, Germany). All participants had a positive reaction to at least one allergen in the test (the sIgE concentration ≥ 0.35 IU/ml). RESULTS Among the patients, 818 (65.54%) were male and 430 (34.46%) were female, with 81 (6.50%) aged 1-3 year, 501 (40.14%) aged 4-7 year, and 666 (53.36%) aged 8-14 year. The positivity rate of inhaled allergens was 80.05% (n = 999), while the positivity rate of food allergens was 66.19% (n = 826). 828 patients (66.35%) were sensitized to multiple allergens. The most common inhaled allergens were Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (65.38%), mold mix (25.56%), house dust (20.67%), and dog hair dander (13.94%), and the most common food allergens were cow's milk (30.31%), cashew nut (27.9%), egg (22.68%), and beef (12.98%). With an increase in age, the inhaled allergen positivity rate showed a significant increase (P < 0.01), while the food allergen positivity rate decreased significantly (P < 0.01). There were significant age differences in total IgE levels (P < 0.01) and the total IgE level was highest in the group aged 8-14 year. CONCLUSIONS Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was the most common sensitizing allergen in pediatric patients with AR in Changzhou. Several other inhaled and food allergens were also common. We observed that multiple allergenic factors play an important role in the occurrence and development of AR.

Abstract
Purpose Many studies have reported that exposure to air pollution increases the likelihood of acquiring allergic rhinitis (AR). This study investigated associations between short-term air pollution exposure and AR outpatient visits. Patients and Methods The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University provided AR outpatient data from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021. Daily air quality information for that period was gathered from the Hangzhou Air Quality Inspection Station. We used the Poisson's generalized additive model (GAM) to investigate relationships between daily outpatient AR visits and air pollution, and investigated lag-exposure relationships across days. Subgroup analyses were performed by age (adult (>18 years) and non-adult (<18 years)) and sex (male and female). Results We recorded 20,653 instances of AR during the study period. Each 10 g/m3 increase in fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations was associated with significant increases in AR outpatient Visits. The relative risks (RR) were: 1.007 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.001-1.013), 1.026 (95% CI: 1.008-1.413), and 1.019 (95% CI: 1.008-1.047). AR visits were more likely due to elevated PM2.5, PM10, and CO levels. Additionally, children were more affected than adults. Conclusion To better understand the possible effects of air pollution on AR, short-term exposure to ambient air pollution (PM2.5, PM10, and CO) may be linked to increased daily outpatient AR visits.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis is a common upper airway disease caused by hypersensitivity to various aeroallergens. It causes increased inflammation throughout the body and may be complicated by other otolaryngological pathologies such as chronic hyperplastic eosinophilic sinusitis, nasal polyposis, and serous otitis media. Allergic rhinitis is an IgE-mediated disease and immunotherapy can be a possible approach for patients to limit the use of antihistamines and corticosteroids. There is evidence that allergen immunotherapy can prevent the development of new sensitizations and reduce the risk of later development of asthma in patients with allergic rhinitis. However, some patients do not benefit from this approach and the efficacy of immunotherapy in reducing the severity and relapse of symptoms is still a matter of debate. This review highlights new aspects of allergic rhinitis with a particular focus on the impact of sexual dimorphism on the disease manifestation and efficacy to the allergen specific immunotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a great risk factor for developing asthma, and its pathogenesis is affected by various factors, such as gene and environment. GSDMB is related to allergic diseases. Our purpose is to explore the correlation of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GSDMB and AR risk in the Chinese population. METHODS We performed a case-control study including 1005 cases and 1004 controls. Rs2305479, rs4795400, and rs12450091 in GSDMB were geneotyped using Agena MassARRAY. The relationships between GSDMB SNPs and AR risk were assessed by logistic regression analysis in PLINK1.9. RESULTS Our study showed that rs4795400 was a protective factor for AR in overall (TT vs. CC: OR = 0.66, p = 0.009; TT vs. CC/TC: OR = 0.67, p = 0.008; additive: OR = 0.87, p = 0.042 males, people with BMI ≤ 24, and living in wind-blown sand area. Rs2305479 was associated with a reduced AR risk in males (TT vs. CC: OR = 0.47, p = 0.014; TT vs. CC/TC: OR = 0.43, p = 0.004). However, rs12450091 was a risk factor for AR in people living in the loess hilly region (CC: OR = 4.75, p = 0.047). The levels of EO and EO_per in the case group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study indicated that GSDMB polymorphisms (rs4795400, rs2305479, and rs12450091) were associated with AR susceptibility. Further studies are required to confirm our findings and to clarify the functional relationship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipoma preferred partner (LPP) polymorphisms are related to immune diseases, but the role of LPP gene in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis (AR) is unclear. The current study aimed to explore the contribution of LPP variants to AR susceptibility in the Chinese Han population. METHODS A total of 992 healthy controls and 992 patients with AR were recruited. Agena MassARRAY system was applied for genotyping. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusted by age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) were calculated to conduct the risk assessment of LPP variants in people with a predisposition to AR. Additionally, multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) was applied to identify high-order interaction models for AR risk. RESULTS We found that rs2030519-G (p = 0.027, OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.02-1.31), rs6780858-G (p = 0.019, OR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.03-1.32), and rs60946162-T (p = 0.014, OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.03-1.34) were associated with increased susceptibility to AR. Subgroup analyses indicated the interaction of LPP polymorphisms in terms of age, gender, and BMI with AR susceptibility (p < 0.05, OR > 1). MDR analysis revealed that rs60946162 had the information gain (0.40%) of individual attribute regarding AR. CONCLUSION Our results first determined that rs2030519, rs6780858, and rs60946162 were correlated with increased susceptibility to AR in the Chinese Han population, which add to our understanding of the impact of LPP gene variants on AR development.

Food Sensitization Impact on Asthma Attacks in Children According to Age Group. ALLERGIES 2022. Abstract
Introduction: The progression of allergy disorders is termed “atopic march.” Having one allergic disorder increases the likelihood of acquiring others. Asthma and food allergies often coexist. There are no thresholds for specific IgE (sIgE) associated with the presence of clinical symptoms. Each allergen shows a particular trend with age. Objective: Our study and analysis aim to identify food sensitization in children with asthma and evaluate its impact on asthma attacks and clinical control. Material and methods: As a part of a bigger study, 56 children (mean age 11.07 years (5.3–17.5), 38 boys, and 18 girls) with bronchial asthma were tested for total IgE and sIgE against food and inhalator allergens. All children performed baseline and post-BD spirometry and were assessed for asthma control. Results: In the studied population of children, sIgE against several food allergens was positive in the same patient. A significant correlation was found between the positive sIgE for milk and soy (p < 0.0001), for milk and egg yolk (p = 0.01), compared to milk and peanuts (p = 0.004), compared to egg yolk and fish (p < 0.0001), compared to egg yolk and casein (p < 0.001), and soy (p < 0.0001). The children who are positive for sIgE antibodies in cats, dogs, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, wormwood from aeroallergens and soy from food allergens have a higher risk of hospitalization for exacerbation of bronchial asthma. (p < 0.05). In the studied population, sensitization to food allergens among asthmatics does not contribute to the number of asthma attacks. Conclusions: Food sensitivity is associated with eczema, while mite sensitization is strongly associated with rhinitis and asthma. Food sensitization is not a risk factor for asthma exacerbation in children older than five years old.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sex and age of patients are variables affecting across the board all chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) endotypes. The main aim of this investigation was to compare the clinical, laboratory, pathological and prognostic characteristics of CRSwNP in male vs female patients stratified according to age (young-adult [20 years ≤ age ≤ 40 years], and elderly [age ≥ 65 years]). This is the first study that analyzed the association of the above-mentioned features with age and sex combination in CRSwNP electing endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and five consecutive young-adult patients (62 males and 43 females) and 67 elderly patients (44 males and 23 females) with CRSwNP who had undergone ESS were enrolled. RESULTS The recurrence rate resulted associated with the age and sex combination (p = 0.0165). Young-adult males' recurrence rate (29.0%) was higher than young-adult females (11.6%) and elderly males (4.5%). Allergy resulted associated with age and sex combination (p = 0.0158). Young-adult males' allergy rate (50.0%) was higher than elderly males' (29.5%) and elderly females' (13%). Moreover, allergy rate was higher in young-adult females (41.9%) than in elderly females. CONCLUSION Our data suggest the possibility of an interaction between sex and age in the recurrence of nasal polyposis after ESS. More studies are needed to understand the role of sex hormones in pathogenesis and prognosis of CRSwNP.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the popular childhood diseases, bringing physical and metal burdens to the children and their families. The study was performed to detect common allergens eliciting AR in children, to investigate the prevalence of allergens in different age and gender cohorts, and to provide a reliable basis for clinical prevention and treatment of AR during childhood. We measured serum-specific IgE and performed inhalant and ingestion allergen examinations in 2,316 children with AR, in collaboration with BioSciTec GmbH. The prevalence of different allergens was determined according to gender, age, severity, and season. Among the 2,316 AR cases, the top five inhalant allergens were Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (1,674 cases, 72.3%), Dermatophagoides farinae (1,520 cases, 65.6%), Blomia tropicalis (1,477 cases, 63.8%), Cockroach (602 cases, 26.0%), and Dog hair (602 cases, 26.0%). The top five ingestive allergens were Milk (1,111 cases, 48.0%), Egg white (543 cases, 23.4%), Shrimp/Crab (425 cases, 18.4%), Beef/Mutton (422 cases, 18.2%), and Egg yold (329 cases, 14.2%). AR severity analyses showed that 50.9% (1,180 cases) of D. pteronyssinus allergies were above level three, 47.9% (1,109 cases) of D. farinae allergies were above level three, only 23.3% (539 cases) of B. tropicalis allergies were level three, and B. tropicalis allergies were mainly of level 2. Other AR-inducing allergens mainly produced level one or two reactions. Regarding ingestion allergens, 7.9% (183 cases) of milk allergies and 4.7% (108 cases) of Shrimp/Crab allergies were above level three, and other allergens induced AR mainly of level one or two. The study investigated the major allergens eliciting AR in children from Guangdong, China, assessed the prevalence and severity among cohorts regarding age, gender, and season, and produced essential information on childhood AR, laying important references for AR prevention and treatment in the future.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the allergen characteristics, allergen distribution and clinical symptoms of autumn allergic rhinitis in Changchun and surrounding areas. Methods:The allergen test results of 1080 allergic rhinitis(AR) suspected patients from Changchun and surrounding areas were collected, from August to October 2019 and August to October 2020 in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Second Hospital of Jilin University. The positive rates of major allergens and their differences in gender, age, different years and clinical symptom were compared and analyzed. Results:①Among the 1080 suspected AR patients, 804 patients(74.44%) had positive allergens. ②The top 3 allergens of autumn AR in Changchun and surrounding areas were Artemisia(36.20%), Dwarf ragweed(33.24%) and Candida/Penicillium notarum/Cladosporium/Alternaria/Aspergillus niger(19.81%). The positive rates of Artemisia and Dwarf ragweed were higher in men than in women(P<0.05). ③Artemisia was the major allergen of autumn AR in juvenile group, youth group and middle-aged group. ④The positive rate of two or more allergens was 2.39 times that of single allergen. ⑤Patients with positive autumn pollen allergens had more severe symptoms of nasal congestion, red eye/eye itching and epiphora than those in other groups. Conclusion:Seasonal AR had typical clinical symptom characteristics. Major allergens in autumn AR in Changchun and surrounding areas are autumn pollen allergens(Artemisia, Dwarf ragweed, Humulus). The distribution of those allergens was different in gender, age, and different years.
