Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe pneumonia is one of the most important causes of mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Adenovirus (ADV) is a significant cause of severe viral pneumonia after allo-HSCT, and we aimed to identify the clinical manifestations, prognostic factors, and outcomes of ADV pneumonia after allo-HSCT. METHODS Twenty-nine patients who underwent allo-HSCT at the Peking University Institute of Hematology and who experienced ADV pneumonia after allo-HSCT were enrolled in this study. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the probability of overall survival (OS). Potential prognostic factors for 100-day OS after ADV pneumonia were evaluated through univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. RESULTS The incidence rate of ADV pneumonia after allo-HSCT was approximately 0.71%. The median time from allo-HSCT to the occurrence of ADV pneumonia was 99 days (range 17-609 days). The most common clinical manifestations were fever (86.2%), cough (34.5%) and dyspnea (31.0%). The 100-day probabilities of ADV-related mortality and OS were 40.4% (95% CI 21.1%-59.7%) and 40.5% (95% CI 25.2%-64.9%), respectively. Patients with low-level ADV DNAemia had lower ADV-related mortality and better OS than did those with high-level (≥ 106 copies/ml in plasma) ADV DNAemia. According to the multivariate analysis, high-level ADV DNAemia was the only risk factor for intensive care unit admission, invasive mechanical ventilation, ADV-related mortality, and OS after ADV pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS We first reported the prognostic factors and confirmed the poor outcomes of patients with ADV pneumonia after allo-HSCT. Patients with high-level ADV DNAemia should receive immediate and intensive therapy.

Abstract
This study described 17 cases of children admitted to the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital with acute hepatitis of unknown origin between mid-April and November 2022. Following the World Health Organization's working case definition of probable cases, 17 children, with a median age of 2.1 years (interquartile range: 1.0-7.1), presenting with acute hepatitis non-AE, with serum transaminase >500 IU/L, were included in the study. A pre-specified set of microbiological tests was performed on different biological specimens for all pediatric patients. All patients resulted negative for the common hepatotropic viruses. The most common pathogen detected in blood specimens was human-herpes-virus-7 (52.9%). Adenovirus was detected more frequently in stool specimens (62.5%) than in respiratory (20.0%) or blood samples (17.6%). Regarding Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, one child tested positive two days after admission, while antibodies against spike and nucleoprotein were present in 82.3% of patients. A co-pathogen detection was observed in 94.1% of children. Overall, 16 children recovered without clinical complications, while one patient required liver transplantation. In these cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin, adenovirus was mainly detected in stool samples. A co-pathogen detection was also frequently observed, suggesting that the etiology of this acute hepatitis is most probably multifactorial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We evaluated the proportion, clinical features, and outcomes of previously healthy children presenting to a large Canadian quaternary pediatric center with severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology. METHODS All patients with serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) > 500 U/L or aspartate aminotransferase (AST) > 500 U/L between June 1, 2018, and May 31, 2022, at The Hospital for Sick Children, were identified. Subjects with only AST > 500 U/L were excluded. Clinical characteristics, investigations, and outcomes for patients without clear etiology for ALT > 500 U/L (severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology) for our study period and from October 1 to May 31 of each year 2018-2021 were reviewed. RESULTS Of 977 patients with ALT/AST> 500 U/L, 720 had only ALT > 500 U/L. We excluded age below 6 months (n = 99) or above 16 years (n = 66), known pre-existing liver conditions (n = 66), and ALT > 500 U/L in already admitted patients (n = 151). Among the remaining 338 children with ALT > 500 U/L at presentation, an etiology was identified in 303 subjects. 33 (9.8%) children [median age 6.1 y (range 0.5-15.5); 61% male] were confirmed as severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology. Twenty patients (60.6%) were tested for blood adenovirus by PCR, and 1 (5%) was positive (serotype B7). Liver tissue specimens from 18 patients revealed no evidence of viral inclusions or adenovirus. Twelve (36.3%) presented with pediatric acute liver failure, with 8 (24.2%) requiring liver transplantation. There were no deaths. Hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia occurred in 5 (15%) patients. CONCLUSIONS Of children presenting with severe acute hepatitis to a quaternary children's hospital over a 48-month period, 9.8% had unknown etiology with no change over time. Liver transplantation remains an important treatment strategy for those presenting with pediatric acute liver failure phenotype. The frequency of cases associated with human adenovirus infection was noncontributory.

Abstract
Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) can cause acute hepatitis in immunocompromised patients. However, it is unclear whether HAdVs are contributors to hepatitis in immunocompetent children. In this study, the liver function test (LFT) results were retrospectively analyzed among children hospitalized (age <14 years) between January 2016 and October 2019 for acute respiratory infection caused by adenoviruses. Alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were elevated in 7.74% and 46.89% of patients, respectively. All patients with >2 folds of the upper limit of ALT or AST levels were infected with HAdV-7 or HAdV-55. Significantly higher levels of ALT, AST, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT), and lower albumin levels were observed in the HAdV-7 infection group than in the HAdV-3 infection group. HAdV-55 infection led to significantly higher γ-GT, total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin levels than the other infection types. The records of four patients with serial monitoring of the LFT results were further analyzed. Multiple indicators remained abnormal during the entire hospitalization in these patients. These results indicate that HAdV infection is often accompanied by abnormal liver function, and HAdV-7 and HAdV-55 might be under-recognized contributors to hepatitis among children.

Abstract
Investigation into a recent cluster of acute hepatitis in children from the southeastern United States identified human adenovirus (HAdV) DNAemia in all 9 cases. Molecular genotyping in 5 of 9 (56%) children identified HAdV type 41 in all cases (100%). Importantly, 2 children from this cluster progressed rapidly to pediatric acute liver failure (PALF) and required liver transplantation. HAdV type 41, a known cause of self-limited gastroenteritis, has not previously been associated with severe cholestatic hepatitis and liver failure in healthy children. Adenovirus polymerase chain reaction assay and sequencing of amplicons performed on DNA extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded liver tissue also identified adenovirus species F (HAdV type 40 or 41) in these 2 children with PALF. Transplant considerations and successful liver transplantation in such situations remain scarce. In this report, we describe the clinical course, laboratory results, liver pathology, and treatment of 2 children with PALF associated with HAdV type 41, one of whom developed secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Their successful posttransplant outcomes demonstrate the importance of early multidisciplinary medical management and the feasibility of liver transplantation in some children with PALF and HAdV DNAemia.

Abstract
In April 2022, an increased incidence of acute hepatitis cases of unknown etiology among previously healthy children across the United Kingdom was described. Since, more than 270 cases from the United Kingdom and hundreds more from all across the world have been reported. The majority of affected children were younger than 6 years of age. The clinical presentation was nonspecific with diarrhea and vomiting usually preceding the appearance of jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, and malaise. Approximately 5% have required liver transplantation. An infectious etiology has been considered likely given the epidemiological and clinical features of the reported cases. Between 50 and 60% of the children tested were diagnosed with adenovirus infection although a clear etiological connection has still to be demonstrated. No link with SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccine was found. What is not clear to date is whether the high number of acute hepatitis cases reported is related to a true increase in incidence or heightened awareness following on from the initial reports from the United Kingdom. The Hepatology Committee of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) developed a paper on the current outbreak of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology recognizing its importance and the need of approaching the current situation with a scientifically rigorous approach. The aims of the article are to summarize the current knowledge and to identify the most pertinent issues regarding the diagnosis and management of this condition and the research questions raised.

Abstract
Several clusters and individual cases of acute hepatitis have been reported in the US, Europe and recently in Asia and Central America since October 2021. A laboratory investigation of the common viral hepatitis agents (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV and HEV) yielded negative results prompting the use of the term “acute non HepA-E hepatitis” to describe this condition. The cases were characterized by the manifestations of acute hepatitis (abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice and very high levels of liver enzymes) affecting children with a median age of 3–4 years. The exact underlying etiology has not been revealed yet; however, a leading hypothesis is that an infectious agent is the culprit, underlying cause or a risk factor for acute non HepA-E hepatitis occurrence. So far, laboratory testing has shown the presence of the group F human adenovirus serotype 41 (HAdV-F41) in about three-fourths of the investigated cases. As of 13 May 2022, more than 450 cases were reported worldwide, the majority of which were in the UK (n = 176), the US (n = 109), 13 European countries (at least 103 cases) and in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Palestine, Panama, Singapore and South Korea. Vigilant surveillance and epidemiologic investigations to identify further cases are warranted to delineate the features of this emergent public health issue. The possible role of environmental and toxic agents including foodborne toxins should also be considered. Specific guidelines for identification of further cases are necessary, particularly in low-income settings where testing for adenoviruses is not considered routinely. A genetic analysis of HAdV-F41 isolates is recommended to assess the potential changes in the virus genome with subsequent possible altered virus behavior. Immunopathogenesis is another possibility that should be evaluated considering the lack of viral structures in liver biopsies of the affected children in the US.

Abstract
The many respiratory viruses that cause influenza-like illness (ILI) are reported and tracked as one entity, defined by the CDC as a group of symptoms that include a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, a cough, and/or a sore throat. In the United States alone, ILI impacts 9-49 million people every year. While tracking ILI as a single clinical syndrome is informative in many respects, the underlying viruses differ in parameters and outbreak properties. Most existing models treat either a single respiratory virus or ILI as a whole. However, there is a need for models capable of comparing several individual viruses that cause respiratory illness, including ILI. To address this need, here we present a flexible model and simulations of epidemics for influenza, RSV, rhinovirus, seasonal coronavirus, adenovirus, and SARS/MERS, parameterized by a systematic literature review and accompanied by a global sensitivity analysis. We find that for these biological causes of ILI, their parameter values, timing, prevalence, and proportional contributions differ substantially. These results demonstrate that distinguishing the viruses that cause ILI will be an important aspect of future work on diagnostics, mitigation, modeling, and preparation for future pandemics.

Abstract
AIM Adenovirus infections are exceedingly common in childhood. However, little is known of the clinical characteristics of children admitted with severe infection to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). METHODS Clinical data on children hospitalised with adenovirus infection between January 2005 and March 2020 were collected. We compared data between children hospitalised in the PICU and those who were not in a 1:2 ratio. RESULTS During the study period, 69 children with adenovirus infection were admitted to the PICU, representing 5% of all hospitalised children with adenovirus. Thirty-four (49%) were previously healthy children. Mortality occurred in 5 patients, and all had an underlying illness. Cidofovir was used in 21 children, including 11 who were previously healthy. No side effects were attributed to the treatment. During 2005-2014, viral co-infection rates were 42% in the PICU group and 11% in the control group (p = 0.002). However, during 2015-2020, when the viral panel became widespread in our institution, the rates of co-infection were similar in the two groups (32% and 34%, p = 1.0). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that adenovirus may present as a serious, life-threatening disease even in previously healthy children.

Abstract
A 35-year-old female with no medical history presented with fever. Laboratory work was normal except for elevated liver function test (LFT): alkaline phosphatase (AP) (296), aspartate transaminase (AST) (343), alanine transaminase (ALT) (378), and international normalized ratio (INR) (1.23). Ultrasound liver was normal. Infectious workup was negative for hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Herpes simplex virus (HSV), and COVID-19. Similarly, autoimmune hepatitis, Wilson, and alpha-1 antitrypsin workup were negative. She reported taking Yogi-Kanthika (ayurvedic-proprietary medicine) on/off for seasonal sore throat, yet RUCAM-score was 2 (unlikely a drug induced injury). Respiratory-viral-panel came positive for adenovirus. With supportive treatment, symptoms and LFT trended down, thus, liver biopsy decision was deferred. We believe this is the first reported case of adenovirus hepatitis in an immunocompetent adult. Hence, we suggest that clinicians should consider a refined differential diagnosis for elevated LFT (that includes adenovirus).

Abstract
Background Describe the outcome of adenovirus pneumonia in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) over a 3-year period, to identify the risk factors that may be associated with worse outcome. Methods A retrospective observational study was performed in the PICU of children’s hospital in Shanghai from July 2016 to June 2019. Sixty-seven children over 29 days to 14 years old with adenovirus pneumonia who were admitted to PICU with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure were included in this study. The primary outcome was hospital mortality, and secondary outcomes were hospital and PICU length of stay (LOS), and risk factors of worse outcome. Results Of 67 children with severe adenovirus pneumonia, the hospital mortality was 16.42% (11/67) and 28-day mortality was 14.93% (10/67). Median Pediatric Risk of Mortality III (PRISM III) score at admission was 13 (interquartile range [IQR], 10–15). Median PICU LOS stay was 11 days (8-18d) and hospital LOS was 22 days (16-31d). Among children with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (n = 9), 6 cases survived and 3 cases died. The patients who need renal replacement therapy, neuromuscular blockade, parenteral nutrition, and packed red blood cell perfusion had higher hospital mortality (p < 0.001, p = 0.041, p = < 0.001, p = 0.012, respectively). Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that liver dysfunction and nosocomial infection were associated with high risk of mortality. Conclusions The hospital mortality of adenovirus pneumonia in our PICU was 16.42%. Patients complicated liver dysfunction and co-infection & nosocomial infection were associated with poor outcome.

Abstract
A significant proportion of patients acquire hospital associated infections as a result of care within the NHS each year. Numerous antimicrobial strategies, such as antibiotics and surface modifications to medical facilities and instruments, have been devised in an attempt to reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections, but most have been proven unsuccessful and unsustainable due to antibiotic resistance. Therefore, the need to discover novel materials that can combat pathogenic microorganisms is ongoing. Novel technologies, such as the potential use of nanomaterials and nanocomposites, hold promise for reducing these infections in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. In this study, the antimicrobial activity of tungsten, tungsten carbide and tungsten oxide nanoparticles were tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and bacteriophage T4 (DNA virus). The most potent nanoparticles, tungsten oxide, were incorporated into polymeric fibres using pressurised gyration and characterised using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The antimicrobial activity of tungsten oxide/polymer nanocomposite fibres was also studied. The results suggest the materials in this study promote mediation of the inhibition of microbial growth in suspension.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we present the overview of emerging and neglected viruses associated with liver involvement. RECENT FINDINGS Hepatitis E virus (HEV) emerged in the last two decades, causing hepatitis in many parts of the world. Moreover, liver involvement was also described in some emerging arboviral infections. Many reports showed dengue-associated liver injury; however, chikungunya, West Nile, tick-borne encephalitis, and Zika virus are rarely associated with clinically manifest liver disease. In addition, some neglected highly prevalent viruses such as adenoviruses and parvovirus B19 are capable of causing hepatitis in specific population groups. Anelloviruses (torque teno virus/torque teno mini virus/torque teno midi virus, SEN virus), human bocavirus, pegiviruses, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus have shown a little potential for causing hepatitis, but their role in the etiology of liver disease remains to be determined. In addition to the well-known hepatotropic viruses, many emerging and neglected viruses have been associated with liver diseases. The number of emerging zoonotic viruses has been increasingly recognized. While zoonotic potential of HEV is well documented, the recent identification of new hepatitis-related animal viruses such as HEV strains from rabbits and camels, non-primate hepaciviruses in domestic dogs and horses, as well as equine and porcine pegivirus highlights the possible zoonotic transmission in the context of "One Health." However, zoonotic potential and hepatotropism of animal hepatitis viruses remain to be determined.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pneumonia remains the leading cause of hospitalisations and deaths among children aged <5 years. Diverse respiratory pathogens cause acute respiratory infections, including pneumonia. Here, we analysed viral and bacterial pathogens and risk factors associated with death of hospitalised children. DESIGN A 9-year case series study. SETTING Two secondary-care hospitals, one tertiary-care hospital and one research centre in the Philippines. PARTICIPANTS 5054 children aged <5 years hospitalised with severe pneumonia. METHODS Nasopharyngeal swabs for virus identification, and venous blood samples for bacterial culture were collected. Demographic, clinical data and laboratory findings were collected at admission time. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the factors associated with death. RESULTS Of the enrolled patients, 57% (2876/5054) were males. The case fatality rate was 4.7% (238/5054), showing a decreasing trend during the study period (p<0.001). 55.0% of the patients who died were either moderately or severely underweight. Viruses were detected in 61.0% of the patients, with respiratory syncytial virus (27.0%) and rhinovirus (23.0%) being the most commonly detected viruses. In children aged 2-59 months, the risk factors significantly associated with death included age of 2-5 months, sensorial changes, severe malnutrition, grunting, central cyanosis, decreased breath sounds, tachypnoea, fever (≥38.5°C), saturation of peripheral oxygen <90%, infiltration, consolidation and pleural effusion on chest radiograph.Among the pathogens, adenovirus type 7, seasonal influenza A (H1N1) and positive blood culture for bacteria were significantly associated with death. Similar patterns were observed between the death cases and the aforementioned factors in children aged <2 months. CONCLUSION Malnutrition was the most common factor associated with death and addressing this issue may decrease the case fatality rate. In addition, chest radiographic examination and oxygen saturation measurement should be promoted in all hospitalised patients with pneumonia as well as bacteria detection to identify patients who are at risk of death.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the risk factors for poor prognosis of severe adenovirus pneumonia (SAP) in children. METHODS The clinical data of 189 children with SAP were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the risk factors for poor prognosis. RESULTS The univariate logistic regression analysis showed that the patients with hemoglobin <90 g/L, plasma albumin <30 g/L, C-reactive protein >30 mg/L, procalcitonin >10 ng/mL, alanine aminotransferase >100 U/L, or aspartate aminotransferase >100 U/L had poor prognosis (P<0.05), and that those with congenital dysplasia of the airway, acute respiratory distress syndrome, circulatory complications, electrolyte and acid-base disturbance, or more than three complications also had poor prognosis (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Poor prognosis of severe adenovirus pneumonia in children is associated with anemia, low serum albumin, inflammatory response, concurrent multiple complications and underlying lung diseases.

Abstract
Adenoviruses are a common cause of respiratory infection, pharyngitis, and conjunctivitis in infants and young children. They are known to cause hepatitis and liver failure in immunocompromised patients; they are a rare cause of hepatitis in immunocompetent patients and have been known to cause fulminant hepatic failure. We present a 23-month-old immunocompetent infant who presented with acute noncholestatic hepatitis, hypoalbuminemia, generalized anasarca, and pancytopenia secondary to adenovirus infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of our study was to understand the epidemiological and clinical features of respiratory adenoviral infections among children at a single institution over the course of several years. METHODS From January 2005 to April 2009, 1836 children (≤15 years old) who had been admitted to Korea University Ansan Hospital were tested for acute respiratory infection. The patients who were positive for an adenovirus infection were enrolled in this study, and their medical records were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Adenoviruses were isolated from 310 patients. The male to female ratio was 1.6:1 and mean age was 32 ± 24 months. Children under 5 years of age had the highest prevalence. In 2007, adenovirus infections occurred endemically throughout the year. The clinical diagnoses were primarily upper respiratory tract infections (45.4%), lower respiratory tract infections (48.1%), and neurologic disease (5.2%). Associated symptoms, signs and laboratory findings included fever (91.9%), cough (83.9%), pharyngeal injection (62.3%), rale (32.6%) and elevated C-reactive protein (93.9%). The most common radiologic findings were perihilar and peribronchial infiltrates (42.6%). Co-infections were observed in 29 cases. The mean durations of hospitalization and fever were 6.2 ± 6.5 and 4.8 ± 3.1 days, respectively. The lengths of hospitalization were similar for patients admitted for upper respiratory tract infections with severe morbidity and those admitted for lower respiratory tract infections. No children in the study died. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that respiratory adenovirus infections are an important cause of hospitalization in young children, and contribute to a significant morbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adenoviruses cause a variety of clinical symptoms, involving the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and neurologic systems. Only a few of the 55 known serotypes of adenovirus that affect humans can cause outbreaks of respiratory tract infection. AIM To describe the characteristics and clinical manifestations of severe respiratory disease contracted by 8 physically and cognitively disabled children during a very short outbreak of adenovirus serotype 7 infection in a residential facility. METHODS The clinical, imaging, and laboratory findings of the patients who were hospitalized with severe respiratory symptoms were retrospectively reviewed. Molecular typing of the adenovirus was performed. RESULTS During 10 days in February 2010, 8 severely disabled children, 9 months to 5 years of age (median 22.5 months), from the same residential facility, were hospitalized due to severe acute respiratory disease with hypoxemia. Four of them (50%) needed mechanical ventilation for 2 to 8 days and one developed multisystem failure, including acute renal failure. Adenovirus serotype 7 was detected in the respiratory specimens of all 8 children. Two patients were treated with intravenous cidofovir. All 8 patients survived and were discharged after hospitalization of 6 to 15 (median: 11.5) days. The epidemiologic investigation revealed that all the 8 affected children shared a playroom and a caregiver worked with them while suffering fever, sore throat, and conjunctivitis before the onset of the outbreak. CONCLUSIONS Adenovirus type 7 may cause short outbreaks of infection in institutions, causing children to develop life-threatening disease. Early detection of pathogens causing respiratory infections in institutions, isolation, and other preventive precautions are advocated. Moreover, vaccination of health care providers in institutions with the currently available live, oral adenovirus vaccine for types 4 and 7 should be considered.

Abstract
Adenoviruses can cause a broad spectrum of clinical diseases, most of which are self-limited. However, adenovirus infection can occasionally result in severe or lethal infection. Fifty-five adenovirus serotypes are known today, and they are classified into 7 subgroups (subgroups A to G). Here we examined 282 samples derived from hospitalized patients in Israel (September 2006 to August 2008) who were diagnosed as suffering from adenovirus infections. We used a recently described PCR amplification method and subsequent sequencing to identify the adenovirus. In addition, we studied the medical charts of 106 hospitalized patients from Sheba Medical Center in Israel. The most prevalent adenovirus serotypes found were serotypes 1 (22.8%), 2 (19.2%), 7 (18%), and 3 (14%). In addition, we identified several serotypes that have not been identified previously in Israel. Overall, serotypes of subgroup B were found to be approximately 4 times more prevalent among immunocompromised children than among generally healthy children (52.6%; P < 0.007). The realization that the virus subtypes are different among healthy and immunocompromised patients may lead to more efficient treatment of adenovirus infections among immunocompromised children in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine virologically confirmed hospitalization rates associated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus, and parainfluenza viruses in Hong Kong children. METHODS All patients <18 years of age living on Hong Kong Island (within Hong Kong SAR) admitted for a febrile acute respiratory infection to 1 of the 2 public hospitals on 1 fixed day of the week between October 2003 and September 2006 were prospectively recruited. Hong Kong Island has a known population denominator and these 2 hospitals managed 72.5% of all general pediatric admissions for this population. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested for RSV, adenovirus, and parainfluenzae types 1, 2, and 3 by direct antigen detection and culture. RESULTS The annual hospitalization rate for RSV in infants <6 months of age was 233.4 to 311.2 per 10,000. Parainfluenza type 3 had a hospitalization rate of 27.3 to 122.8 per 10,000 in the 1 to <2 years group. Adenovirus was associated with significant hospitalization in those 6 months to 1 year (25.9-77.8 per 10,000), and in those 2 to <5 years (38.1-59.2 per 10,000). The mean duration of hospitalization for RSV was 4.04 ± 2.61 days, significantly longer than the 3.12 ± 1.41 days for adenovirus and the 2.93 ± 2.54 days for parainfluenza infections (P = 0.013 and P = 0.038, respectively). CONCLUSION We documented that the overall pediatric hospitalization burden of RSV was high and comparable to that of influenza. The burden for all the studied viruses was mainly in previously healthy children <5 years of age.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Adenovirus (Ad) respiratory infections have a profound impact in Argentina. Severe chronic disease and a high mortality rate are observed in children after acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) by Ad. METHODS A retrospective observational study was performed to describe clinical characteristics and to analyze risk factors for bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) and death in 415 children hospitalized with ALRI caused by Ad from March 1988 to May 2005. RESULTS Mean age of patients was 10.7 months (+/-9.2) Overall 80% of patients were healthy before ALRI. Forty-nine percent recovered, sequelae were observed in 36% and 15% died. Independent risk factors for BO were: >30 days of hospitalization (odds ratio (OR) 27.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 14.6-50.9), multifocal pneumonia (OR 26.6, 95% CI 5.3-132) and hypercapnia (OR 5.6, 95% CI 3.5-9). Independent risk factors for death in acute stage of disease were: mechanical assistance (OR 121, 95% CI 18.2-814), multifocal pneumonia (OR 102, 95% CI 9.5-31.1), hypercapnia (OR 42.6, 95% CI 10.2-177.1), coagulation disorders (OR 17, 95% CI 8.25-35), neurological symptoms (OR 12.7, 95% CI 3.5-6.6) and co-infection with measles (OR 9.6, 95% CI 2.1-44.2). CONCLUSIONS High incidence of sequelae and mortality in previously healthy children after Ad infection was observed in a population of children from Argentina.

Abstract
Infections with adenoviruses are a common problem in the pediatric population. Normally asymptomatic to mild, those infections tend to take a more severe course in immunocompromised patients. 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) represents a common genetic disorder causing immunodeficiency from thymic hypoplasia or aplasia, heart defects, a characteristic facial appearance, and velopharyngeal dysfunction. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a frequent gastrointestinal emergency observed in neonatal intensive care units. The occurrence of NEC is more prevalent in preterm infants. However, there are cases in term infants, but usually, they are associated with predisposing disorders. In this case report, a child is presented with 22q11DS that postnatally developed NEC associated with an adenoviral infection. Although other viruses such as toroviruses or cytomegaloviruses have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NEC in preterm infants, we could not find any report in the recent medical literature describing an association between adenoviral infections, NEC, and 22q11DS in a term infant.

Abstract
We describe the clinical characteristics of 209 children younger than 15 years of age with positive pharyngeal cultures for adenovirus. The mean age of the children was 37 +/- 33 months, and the mean peak temperature was 39.2 +/- 0.76 degrees C. On physical examination, tonsillitis was found for 88% of children; 52% of them had exudative tonsillitis. Forty-eight percent of the patients who had a white blood cell count performed had >15,000 leukocytes per mm, and 25% had >20,000 leukocytes per mm. C-reactive protein concentrations were >7 mg/dL for 22.5% of the patients. Adenovirus pharyngeal infections in young children mimic severe bacterial infections.
