Death Is Not the End: A Register-Based Study of the Effect of Parental Death on Adult Children's Childbearing Behavior in Sweden

Is the mortality-fertility nexus gendered? A research note on sex differences in the impact of sibling mortality on fertility preferences

Research guided by demographic transition theory has shown that exposure to mortality influences women's fertility preferences and behaviours. Despite the myriad contexts, methodological approaches, and linkages featured in past studies, they have shared a focus on women, leaving questions on the gendered salience of mortality exposures for adults' fertility-related outcomes unanswered. In this research note, we analyse data from three African countries with distinct fertility profiles (Nigeria, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) to examine associations between sibling mortality exposure and ideal family size among women, men, and couples. We also investigate the stability of these associations over time. The associations between adults' sibling mortality exposure and their own and their spouses' ideal family sizes vary across countries. However, the gendered nature of the results in every country and evidence of cross-spousal effects uniformly demonstrate the need to incorporate sex differences into the study of the mortality-fertility link.

Polarized adult fertility patterns following early parental death

Death of a parent during childhood has become rare in developed countries but remains an important life course event that may have consequences for family formation. This paper describes the link between parental death before age 18 and fertility outcomes in adulthood. Using the large national 2011 French Family Survey (INSEE-INED), we focus on the 1946-66 birth cohorts, for whom we observe entire fertility histories. The sample includes 11,854 respondents who have lost at least one parent before age 18. We find a strong polarization of fertility behaviours among orphaned males, more pronounced for those coming from a disadvantaged background. More often childless, particularly when parental death occurred in adolescence, some seem to retreat from parenthood. But orphaned men and women who do become parents seem to embrace family life, by beginning childbearing earlier and having more children, especially when the deceased parent is of the same sex.

The Impact of Grandparental Death on the Fertility of Adult Children

The increasingly central role of vertical family kinship in Western societies underscores the potential value of intergenerational linkages that tie grandparents to the fertility of their adult children. Recent research has examined the changing demography of grandparenthood and the roles fulfilled by living grandparents, but the complex implications of grandparental death-a key feature of intergenerational linkages over the life course-have drawn less attention. In this article, we explore whether and how childbearing of adult women is affected by the death of grandparents-their own parent(s) or their spouse's parent(s). We develop a novel conceptual framework that presents the pathways of influence and considers the overall impact of grandparental death on childbearing of adult children. We then estimate fixed-effects models to identify causal relationships between grandparental death and childbearing, using linked micro-level census and population register data from Israel for the period 1986-2014. We find that grandparental death leads to a reduction of approximately 5 percentage points in the five-year probability of childbirth. The effects of grandparental death are negative across all parities examined and are broadly similar across grandparent's gender and kinship relation. Additional effects are identified, including how the impact of grandparental death varies with time since the previous birth as well as residential proximity prior to death. We explain how our findings regarding the effect of grandparental death offer insight into the role of living grandparents. Our results suggest that policy-makers concerned with low fertility should explore mechanisms that reinforce potential sources of support from grandparents.

Mortality after the death of a parent in adulthood: a register-based comparison of two ethno-linguistic groups

BACKGROUND

Most research on parental bereavement and health have analysed health consequences of parental loss in childhood, while collateral health in adulthood has been less studied.

METHODS

Using register-based population data from Finland, we analyse adult offspring aged 18-50 years with discrete-time hazard models that adjust for offspring and parental socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. In focus are adult children whose parents were alive and lived together at the beginning of the observation period. We compare two culturally distinct but otherwise similar ethno-linguistic groups, Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers.

RESULTS

The results suggest that bereaved men have an approximately 30% higher death risk than non-bereaved men, while there is practically no difference in women. Associations between parental and child deaths are, as expected, stronger for concordant causes of death than for discordant causes of death. However, some associations for discordant causes of death remain, which may indicate causality. Among Swedish speakers, who have notably higher family stability than Finnish speakers, the death of one or both parents shows a stronger association with own mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

The estimated associations found are generally larger than in the neighbouring country Sweden, which may be due to a stronger obedience to traditional family values and patriarchal family roles in Finland. These findings suggest that the association between parental death and mortality in adult offspring may depend on the societal context as well as on cultural practices. These factors should be increasingly acknowledged in future studies on collateral health.
