Abstract
Phosphate recovery from wastewater using readily available biowaste-based adsorbents is beneficial for both eutrophication control and waste management. Bamboo char has a high-density porous structure and eggshell contains CaCO3 with high affinity for phosphate. The combination of calcined bamboo and eggshell is a potential adsorbent for P recovery that has not been tested previously. Because bamboo char and eggshell both are popular for soil amendment, a P-loaded bamboo and eggshell composite is a promising fertilizer for long-term soil improvement. In this work, the feasibility of calcined bamboo and eggshell (BE) for P recovery and its use as fertilizer were investigated. The adsorption capacity and mechanism were examined using adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic analysis. The kinetic study showed that the experimental data sets were fitted best by a pseudo second-order model, indicating chemisorption. The Langmuir isotherm model estimated maximum adsorption capacities of 95.14 and 98.40 mg/g for BE 1:1 and 2:1 adsorbent. Monolayer adsorption occurred on a homogenous surface. The adsorption reaction was non-spontaneous at 298 K and exothermic for the BE 1:1 and 2:1 adsorbent, and the calculated Langmuir separation factor indicated favorable conditions for P adsorption. The desorption study showed lower P desorption capacity in water than in neutral ammonium citrate. P-loaded eggshell-modified bamboo char was an effective slow-release fertilizer for Japanese mustard spinach cultivation, which is a sustainable and environment friendly use of P-loaded materials.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to fabricate three-dimensional bone scaffolds using polycaprolactone and egg shell powder. The scaffolds were coated with sodium alginate/egg white. SEM was used to investigate egg shell particles on the surface of each string of scaffolds. The presence of calcium carbonate in the scaffold structure was confirmed by microstructural analyses employing XRD. Egg shell-related functional groups were discovered using FTIR investigations. Bone cells were used to conduct biocompatibility tests on scaffolds (MG-63). Finally, scaffolds with the highest proportion of egg whites and eggshells have the best cell survival rate. It may be concluded that the PCL/7% Esh/15% Ew scaffold is a good option for application in bone tissue engineering.

In the current study the hypothesis that 1.0% dietary inclusion of glutamine (Gln), a conditionally essential amino acid that influences protein synthesis and shows anti-osteoporotic effect, can influence eggshell quality was tested on laying hens in the post-peak laying period. A 30-week-old Bovans Brown hens were randomly assigned to control group or group supplemented with Gln in the form of alpha-ketoglutarate (10 g/kg) with 12 replicate cages (2 hens/cage) in each group. The experimental period lasted for 30 weeks, from the 31st to the 60th week of age of hens, when eggs were collected and selected eggshell quality indices were determined. While Gln supplementation had no effect on egg geometry and eggshell cracking force, the analysis of eggshell quality showed an increase of the eggshell thickness (P<0.01), porosity (P<0.01), eggshell specific surface (P<0.001) and positive changes in other mechanical parameters (decrease of eggshell stiffness and Young’s modulus, P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively; increase of work needed to crack the eggshell, P<0.05). Changes in eggshell mineral composition, including an increase of Ca content (P<0.001), were also observed. In conclusion, the current study showed a beneficial effect of Gln on the eggshell thickness, calcification, and some mechanical parameters.

Abstract
Phosphorus (P) is a non-renewable resource, irreplaceable for life and food production, and currently considered a Critical Raw Material to the European Union (EU). Due to concerns about the rate of consumption and limited reserves in countries with sensitive geopolitical contexts, it is urgent to recover P from urban and industrial flows. Indeed, the municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are considered relevant sources with several hot spots, especially sewage sludge with estimated recovery efficiencies of >80%. The most promising recovery strategies are based on thermal treatments (e.g., incineration of sludge) following by wet-chemical or thermo-chemical leaching, precipitation, and adsorption. The direct application of sludge on soil is no longer a primary route for P reintegration in the value-chain for countries as Switzerland, Germany, and The Netherlands. In fact, Switzerland and Austria paved the way for implementing P recovery legislation, focusing on recovery from raw sewage sludge or ashes. Indeed, industrial technologies with sludge ash as input show high recovery efficiencies (Ashdec® and Leachphos® with 98 and 79%) and lower environmental impacts, whereas Pearl® technology has about 12% recovery efficiency with wastewater as input. After all, struvite emerges as the most recovered product with recent access to the internal market of EU fertilisers and similar growth performance compared to triple-super-phosphate. However, several studies leave open the possibility of introducing loaded adsorbents with P as soil amendments as a new alternative to conventional desorption. Briefly, P recovery should be a compromise between efficiency, environmental impacts, and economic revenues from the final products.

Mechanism of Biomineralization Induced by Bacillus subtilis J2 and Characteristics of the Biominerals. MINERALS 2019. Abstract: Biomineralization induced by microorganisms has become a hot spot in the field of carbonate sedimentology; however, the mechanisms involved still need to be explored. In this study, the bacterium Bacillus subtilis J2 (GenBank MG575432) was used to induce the precipitation of calcium carbonate minerals at Mg/Ca molar ratios of 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12. Bacillus subtilis J2 bacteria released ammonia to increase pH, but the ammonia released only made the pH increase to 8.25. Carbonic anhydrase was also produced to catalyze the hydration of carbon dioxide, and this process released carbonate and bicarbonate ions that not only increased pH but also elevated carbonate supersaturation. The biominerals formed at a Mg/Ca molar ratio of 0 were spherulitic, elongated, dumbbell-shaped, and irregularly rhombohedral calcite; at a Mg/Ca molar ratio of 3, the biominerals were calcite and aragonite, the weight ratio of calcite decreased from 26.7% to 15.6%, and that of aragonite increased from 73.3% to 84.4% with increasing incubation time. At higher Mg/Ca molar ratios, the biominerals were aragonite, and the crystallinity and thermal stability of aragonite decreased with increasing Mg/Ca molar ratios. FTIR results showed that many organic functional groups were present on/within the biominerals, such as C–O–C, N–H, C=O, O–H, and C–H. HRTEM-SAED examination of the ultra-thin slices of B. subtilis J2 bacteria showed that nano-sized minerals with poor crystal structure had grown or been adsorbed on the EPS coating. The EPS of the B. subtilis J2 strain contained abundant glutamic acid and aspartic acid, which could be deprotonated in an alkaline condition to adsorb Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions; this made EPS act as the nucleation sites. This study may provide some references for further understanding of the mechanism of biomineralization induced by microorganisms.

Abstract
The goal of the study was to assess the sorption properties of calcined eggshells (CEs) as a P reactive media filter. The CEs were calcined in a temperature of 900 °C. A double stage test was performed: batch studies (kinetic and equilibrium) and small-scale column experiment. The estimation of optimal mass ratio of CEs for perspective usage was the additional benefit of column experiment. The short kinetic tests showed that 5 min of contact time with solution of initial concentration of 6.020 mgP-PO4 L-1 is enough to reduce the P-PO4 in 100%. The equilibrium studies were conducted with P-PO4 solution of 6.020 to 977.7 mg L-1 with contact time of 30 min. The obtained data was compensated by non-linear regression using the Marquardt algorithm in the Statgraphics Centurion XVI. The eggshell calcined characterized by high sorption capacity (S max = 72.87 mg g-1) obtained from the Langmuir isotherm model with a good fit (96.77%). To choose the appropriate ratio of a sand filter to eggshells amendment, four small columns were constructed and fed with P-PO4 solution (C in ≈ 5 mg L-1). The percentage mass (m/m) of CEs in the columns was 0.0 (the reference one); 1.0; 2.5; and 5.0. The unit sorption obtained during 95 days of column experiment was 10.668, 4.277, and 2.286 mg P-PO4 g-1 for 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0%, respectively. For practical implementation, the most recommended addition seems to be 1% of CEs. It corresponds, e.g., to the mass of 49 kg CEs for septic tank system.
