Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's hospices provide a range of family-centred care services, including bereavement support. Not all hospices provide specific services for grandparents. AIM To explore how a hospice-based bereavement support group supported grandparents in their grief following the death of a grandchild. METHODS Grandparents attending a group were invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire. Questionnaires from eight groups, run between 2015 and 2019 were collated and interpreted to identify themes. FINDINGS A total of 121 grandparents attended the groups; 113 returned the questionnaires (93% response). A total of three superordinate themes were identified: environment and space, being with people who understand, and the opportunity to hear the stories of others. Grandparents valued hearing the stories of others, providing an opportunity to reflect on the experience of others. CONCLUSION Grandparents felt supported and validated by the group. Facilitated sessions increased coping and resilience of participants, enabling grandparents to support their partner, adult children and surviving grandchildren more effectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood bereavement after sibling death is common, but often unrecognized. The psychosomatic and socioeconomic outcomes of bereaved children can be compromised if appropriate care is unavailable during the formative years leading into adulthood. AIM This review aims to describe the methods, structures and procedures of bereavement care for children and adolescents after the loss of a sibling, and the impact on the families benefiting from these interventions. DESIGN A systematic review without restriction on study design was conducted. DATA SOURCES Four databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Cochrane Library) were searched for articles published from 2000 to 2019. The search was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and the protocol is registered on PROSPERO under number CRD42019124675. Articles were assessed against eligibility criteria by both authors, and quality was appraised using CASP checklists and NHMRC grading guidelines. RESULTS Twenty-three studies met inclusion criteria. Bereavement care was most often accessed by children ages 6-18 who lost a sibling to cancer 6-12 months prior. The interventions were typically group sessions or weekend camps, run predominantly by unpaid staff from a variety of backgrounds. Some staff members received priori specific training. Grief education is taught through mediated discussion and bereavement-centered activities balanced with playful and relaxed activities. Several services have effectuated evaluations of their interventions, and preliminary results show a positive effect for families. CONCLUSION Existing literature most likely gives an incomplete picture of appropriate childhood bereavement care, and many interventions possibly remain unpublished or published in other non-scientific sources. An effective response to childhood grief would involve collaboration between medical resources and community services, reinforced through the development of outreach and training programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although the needs of the bereaved have been identified widely in the literature, how these needs translate into meaningful, appropriate, and client-centered programs needs further exploration. The application of receptivity to support is a critical factor in participation by the bereaved in palliative care bereavement programs. Receptivity is a complex multifactorial phenomenon influenced by internal and external factors that ultimately influences engagement in psychosocial support in bereavement. This study explored factors that influence receptivity to bereavement support from palliative care services in rural, regional, and remote Western Australia. METHOD The study comprised a qualitative descriptive research design using semistructured interviews with 24 bereaved individuals, nine palliative care health professionals, and four Aboriginal Health Professionals. Participants were recruited via palliative care services in country Western Australia. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed. RESULT Findings revealed that a range of individual, social, and geographical factors influence receptivity to bereavement support and can impact on utilization of bereavement support services. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Receptivity provides a frame of reference to enhance understanding of factors influencing engagement in psychosocial support in bereavement. Receptivity promotes a shift of service provider perspectives of effective supportive care to consumer-centric reasons for engagement.

Abstract
Children with life-limiting and disabling conditions are surviving longer than previously, and many require palliative and supportive care, usually at home. Home-based care can put family life under considerable strain, as parents care for their child's complex, often unpredictable, continuing care needs. Rainbow Trust Children's Charity aims to bridge gaps in services for children with life-threatening or terminal conditions by providing family support workers (FSWs). The study used a range of methods (surveys, interviews and ethnographic observation) approach to explore key aspects of the work of the FSWs. The target population for the surveys was families with a child having complex, life-threatening or terminal conditions receiving care from FSWs. The participants included 55 families (12 bereaved) and 39 children aged 2-18 years. Thematic analysis revealed how the FSWs became a presence in families' lives in three main ways: (1) encompassing and embracing families through supporting needs and promoting resilience; (2) befriending and bonding through developing knowledge, trusting relationships and a sense of closeness; and (3) accompanying and enduring by 'being with' families in different settings, situations and crises and by enduring alongside the families. The study demonstrated the fundamental importance of workers who are able to provide aspects of support that is usually not provided by other services.

Abstract
Receptivity is a new concept within the area of scholarship on bereavement. There is a dearth of research that specifically focuses on individuals' receptivity in relation to bereavement support. This is particularly the case within the context of rural, regional, and remote locations. There is also a noticeable absence in the literature on bereavement support to Aboriginal families. Understanding receptivity in relation to bereavement in rural areas is important, particularly as bereavement support is an important area of service to the community by palliative care services. Receptivity to bereavement services has been identified as a critical factor in participation in bereavement support programs. This review provides a starting point by outlining the present literature on receptivity and bereavement.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The main objectives of this qualitative study were to describe the perceptions and needs of pediatric health care professionals (HCPs) taking care of children with palliative care needs and to develop a concept for the first Center of Competence for Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC) in Switzerland. Within two parts of the study, 76 HCPs were interviewed. The main interview topics were: (1) definition of and attitude toward PPC; (2) current provision of PPC; (3) the support needs of HCPs in the provision of PPC; and (4) the role of specialized PPC teams. HCPs expressed openness to PPC and reported distinctive needs for support in the care of these patients. The main tasks of specialized PPC teams in Switzerland would encompass the coaching of attending teams, coordination of care, symptom control, and direct support of affected families during and beyond the illness of their child. CONCLUSION This study indicates the need for specialized PPC in Switzerland both inside and outside of centers providing top quality medical care (Spitzenmedizin). Specialized PPC teams could have a significant impact on the care of children and families with PPC needs. Whether hospices are an option in Switzerland remains unanswered; however, a place to meet other families with similar destinies was emphasized.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The provision of emotional and psychological support for all family members who need it is an essential element of holistic palliative care. Within East Anglia's Children's Hospice, teams of professionally trained and experienced workers offer psychosocial support to all family members at all times during the child's and family's journey. However, the effectiveness and appropriateness of current psychosocial provision is unclear, as is the requirement for any additional psychological services. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to elicit perceptions about current psychological support within the hospice from a group of stakeholders (parents, hospice staff, and external professionals). METHOD Forty-five parents participated in family focus groups, telephone interviews, individual interviews in their home, or a web-based survey. Ninety-five hospice staff (including nurses, carers, play specialists, therapists, and family support practitioners) and 28 external staff (including physicians, nurses, and commissioning managers) were seen using a mixture of focus group and individual meetings. Focus groups and meetings were held at the hospice building or at an external venue. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic coding. RESULTS Two main themes addressing perceptions of current psychological provision emerged: "understanding psychological support" and "unmet psychological need." Subthemes linked to support included choice, staff roles and labels, communication, and flexibility, whereas the themes within unmet need had a stronger focus on people and problems. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Understanding different user perspectives is an important first step in enhancing current psychological provision; operationalizing the findings will be challenging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While it has been shown that bereaved children can experience emotional or behavioural problems, the evidence is inconclusive regarding which children would benefit from support and the kind of support to offer. This study aimed to obtain children's and parents' views on their experiences following bereavement and the usefulness of a peer-group support programme. METHOD Thirty-nine families who had attended a community-based peer-group bereavement support programme within the previous 4 years were approached. Of the 23 with confirmed contact details, 17 agreed to participate. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 23 children (range 8 to 17 years) and 17 parents. RESULTS Children were concerned about isolation from peers and emphasized the value of meeting other children with experiences of bereavement in the group. Parents were concerned about lack of communication within the home about the bereavement, which continued after the group. Most children and parents would have liked more support, either more groups or an ongoing link. CONCLUSIONS Referral to peer-group support may have the potential to improve bereaved children experiencing feelings of social isolation and help them develop coping strategies. Other family-focused support may also be needed for some children.

Abstract
Pediatric palliative care is recommended by many organizations. Yet, there is no information available on the progress that has been made in providing this care or the gaps that still exist in provision around the world. We conducted a systematic review to address this gap in knowledge. The systematic review identified 117 peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed resources. Based on this information, each country was assigned a level of provision; 65.6% of countries had no known activities, 18.8% had capacity building activities, 9.9% had localized provision, and 5.7% had provision that was reaching mainstream providers. Understanding the geographic distribution in the level of provision is crucial for policy makers and funders.

Abstract
Palliative care has always been a part of the care of children. It includes any intervention that focuses on relieving suffering, slowing the progression of disease, and improving quality of life at any stage of disease. In addition, for even the child with the most unpredictable disease, there are predictable times in this child's life when the child, family, and care team will be suffering in ways that can be mitigated by specific interventions. Rather than defining pediatric palliative care in terms of a patient base, severity of disease, or even a general philosophy of care, palliative care can best be understood as a specific set of tasks directed at mitigating suffering. By understanding these tasks; learning to identify predictable times and settings of suffering; and learning to collaborate with multidisciplinary specialists, use communication skills, and identify clinical resources, the pediatrician can more effectively support children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. In this article, we define palliative care as a focus of care integrated in all phases of life and as a set of interventions aimed at easing suffering associated with life-threatening conditions. We detail an approach to these interventions and discuss how they can be implemented by the pediatrician with the support of specialists in hospice and palliative medicine. We discuss common and predictable times of suffering when these interventions become effective ways to treat suffering and improve quality of life. Finally, we discuss those situations that pediatricians most commonly and intensely interface with palliative care-the care of the child with complex, chronic conditions and severe neurologic impairment (SNI).
