Interplay of self, epiphany, and positive actions in shaping individual careers

In this work, we model an individual social career by a finite-size trajectory along a hexagonal lattice moving only forward. At each bifurcation, the individual makes a free-will choice to follow one or the other branch within an uncertain outcome. Considering that those choices are determined by an individual self built from endogenous characteristics, we assume they are random following a binomial distribution. As a result, the individual ascends or descends on the social scale via random progress through the series of bifurcations made at the encountered junctions. The related stochastic process is found to be diffusive. For different selves coming from different points on the social scale, progress does overlap. In addition, we include the possibility of continuous transition across the lattice caused external influences as an epiphany. The occurrence of a quantum leap resulting from an affirmative action opportunity is also included. We also treat the case of a social group being acted by a collective epiphany as with education. The results highlight the key effect of epiphanies and quantum leaps to promote upward mobility across social classes.

Genetic syncretism: Latin American forensics and global indigenous organizing

In the 1970s, Latin America became a global laboratory for military interventions, the cultivation of terror, and ideological and economic transformation. In response, family groups and young scientists forged a new activist forensics focused on human rights, victim-centered justice, and state accountability, inaugurating new forms of forensic practice. We examine how this new form of forensic practice centered in forensic genetics has led to a critical engagement with Indigeneity both within and outside the lab. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with human rights activists and forensic scientists in Argentina, Guatemala and Mexico, this paper examines the relationship between forensic genetics, Indigenous organizing, and human rights practice. We offer the concept of ‘genetic syncretism’ to attend to spaces where multiple and competing beliefs about genetics, justice, and Indigenous identity are worked out through (1) coming together in care, (2) incorporation, and (3) ritual. Helping to unpack the uneasy and incomplete alliance of Indigenous interests and forensic genetic practice in Latin American, genetic syncretism offers a theoretical lens that is attentive to how differentials of power embedded in colonial logics and scientific practice are brokered through the coming together of seemingly incompatible beliefs and practices.

Principles of Researching Health Disparities in Longitudinal Cohort Studies Enrolling Children

Health disparities are defined on the basis of specific populations that, when compared to the general population, have a significant disparity on the rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival. People that experience health disparities can be defined by multiple criteria. As the diversity of the United States broadens and increases, research on the origins and causes of health disparities becomes more important to support a healthy general population. Children are particularly sensitive to and vulnerable to health disparities due to the potentially life long consequences of events during periods of critical organ, intellectual and social development. The concept of health justice whereby each individual has the opportunity to realize their full health potential can only be realized with proper understanding and relevant data to frame practice, policy and actions. The National Children's Study (NCS) was a longitudinal birth cohort study designed to incorporate the principles of the Federal Collaboration on Health Disparities Research in consultation with subject matter experts, community representatives, and ongoing evaluation to ensure high quality and relevant data on factors that impact health outcomes. The NCS developed and tested a model of enrolling a diverse population, capturing and integrating data using a life course framework, constructing individual profiles, then aggregating individuals into groups based on profiles and outcomes. This approach is applicable to other longitudinal cohort studies.

Does ancestry influence health-related quality of life in type 1 diabetes patients? A nationwide study in Brazil

AIMS

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between self-reported color/race and genomic ancestry with HRQoL of patients with type 1 diabetes in a highly admixed population.

METHODS

This was a nationwide, cross-sectional study conducted with 1760 patients with type 1 diabetes from 2011 to 2014 at public clinics in all five Brazilian geographical regions. Information on HRQoL was obtained from two self-completed questionnaires: Short Form-6 Dimensions (SF-6D) and EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) with a visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS). Genomic ancestry was assessed using a Multiplex PCR methodology. Utility scores generated from the questionnaires were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression models.

RESULTS

We included 1698 patients. Those patients who self-reported as black had lower EQ-VAS scores compared to the patients who self-reported as white (67.46 ± 18.45; 72.37 ± 16.44, respectively, p = 0.02). In a linear regression model, each 1% increase in African ancestry resulted in a 9.5 point decrease in EQ-VAS score (p < 0.001). In a multivariate logistic regression, after adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic status and diabetes-related variables, African ancestry remained associated with lower EQ-VAS scores.

CONCLUSION

A higher level of African ancestry implicates on lower quality of life even after adjustments for sociodemographic and diabetes-related data. Gender, physical activity and diabetes-related microvascular complications were strongly associated with low HRQoL in all three questionnaires used. This fact highlights the importance of social aspects when assessing quality of life, as well as the need for regular practice of physical activity and prevention of chronic complications to improve patients' quality of life.

Biocultural citizenship and embodying exceptionalism: Biopolitics for sickle cell disease in Brazil

In 2006, the committee that developed the National Health Policy for the Black Population (NHPBP) chose sickle cell disease as their "flag to demand health rights." The drafting of this policy was official recognition from the Ministry of Health for racial differences of its citizens in order to address certain inequalities in the form of racial health reparations. Through an ethnographic study which consisted of participant observation, life-story and semi-structured interviews, and surveys in the urban centers of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and Brasília between November 2013 and November 2014, I introduce a new conceptual approach called biocultural citizenship. It is a flexible mode of enacting belonging that varies depending on disease status, skin color, social class, recognition of African lineage, and other identifiers. Using empirical evidence, this article explores how people living with sickle cell disease (SCD), civil society, and the Brazilian government-at state and federal levels-have contributed to the discourse on SCD as a "black" disease, despite a prevailing cultural ideology of racial mixture. Specifically, I demonstrate that the SCD movement strategically uses Blackness to make claims for health rights. Biocultural citizenship is dependent on the idea of biological and cultural difference that is coproduced by the State and Afro-Brazilian citizens. The use of biology to help legitimate cultural claims, especially in the Black Atlantic, contributes a new and distinct way to think about how race and skin color are used as tools of agency for diasporic communities.

Genomic research, publics and experts in Latin America: Nation, race and body

The articles in this issue highlight contributions that studies of Latin America can make to wider debates about the effects of genomic science on public ideas about race and nation. We argue that current ideas about the power of genomics to transfigure and transform existing ways of thinking about human diversity are often overstated. If a range of social contexts are examined, the effects are uneven. Our data show that genomic knowledge can unsettle and reinforce ideas of nation and race; it can be both banal and highly politicized. In this introduction, we outline concepts of genetic knowledge in society; theories of genetics, nation and race; approaches to public understandings of science; and the Latin American contexts of transnational ideas of nation and race.

Building the genomic nation: 'Homo Brasilis' and the 'Genoma Mexicano' in comparative cultural perspective

This article explores the relationship between genetic research, nationalism and the construction of collective social identities in Latin America. It makes a comparative analysis of two research projects--the 'Genoma Mexicano' and the 'Homo Brasilis'--both of which sought to establish national and genetic profiles. Both have reproduced and strengthened the idea of their respective nations of focus, incorporating biological elements into debates on social identities. Also, both have placed the unifying figure of the mestizo/mestiço at the heart of national identity constructions, and in so doing have displaced alternative identity categories, such as those based on race. However, having been developed in different national contexts, these projects have had distinct scientific and social trajectories: in Mexico, the genomic mestizo is mobilized mainly in relation to health, while in Brazil the key arena is that of race. We show the importance of the nation as a frame for mobilizing genetic data in public policy debates, and demonstrate how race comes in and out of focus in different Latin American national contexts of genomic research, while never completely disappearing.
