Abstract
OBJECTIVE A scoping review of studies published in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic focused on individuals with pre-existing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and specified stressor-related disorders, with the objective of mapping the research conducted. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA (1) direct study of individuals with pre-existing depressive, anxiety, and/or specified stressor-related (i.e., posttraumatic stress, acute stress) disorders/issues; (2) focus on mental health-related pandemic effects, and; (3) direct study of mental health symptoms related to depression, anxiety, or psychological distress. SOURCES OF EVIDENCE Database-specific subject headings and natural language keywords were searched in Medline, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) up to March 3, 2021. Review of potentially relevant studies was conducted by two independent reviewers and proceeded in two stages: (1) title and abstract review, and; (2) full paper review. DATA CHARTING Study details (i.e., location, design and methodology, sample or population, outcome measures, and key findings) were extracted from included studies by one reviewer and confirmed by the Principal Investigator. RESULTS 66 relevant articles from 26 countries were identified. Most studies adopted a cross-sectional design and were conducted via online survey. About half relied on general population samples, with the remainder assessing special populations, primarily mental health patients. The most commonly reported pre-existing category of disorders or symptoms was depression, followed closely by anxiety. Most studies included depressive and anxiety symptoms as outcome measures and demonstrated increased vulnerability to mental health symptoms among individuals with a pre-existing mental health issue. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that improved mental health supports are needed during the pandemic and point to future research needs, including reviews of other diagnostic categories and reviews of research published in subsequent years of the pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Caring Contacts are an emerging intervention that aims to reduce distress and suicide risk after acute psychiatric care. This trial aimed to determine whether, during a pandemic, there was any evidence that the mental health benefits and reduction in suicidal ideation (SI) associated with delivering Caring Contacts to recently discharged psychiatric patients were greater than a control communication. The secondary objective was to identify whether the predicted benefits were greater among people living alone or those diagnosed with depression. METHOD A single-site pilot randomized clinical trial (n = 100), with patients recruited from the adult Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada between August 2020 and May 2021. Participants were randomized (1:1) to the Caring Contact or control group. Participants received three Caring Contact or control communications via email or mail (on days 4, 21, and 56 post-discharge). Mental health symptoms were assessed using the self-report Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) scores at discharge (baseline) and when participants received each communication. Analysis of variance was used for the primary comparisons and exploratory analyses for subgroups. RESULTS Both groups experienced a significant worsening of mental health symptoms at all time points post-discharge relative to baseline. There were no significant differences between groups at any time point, however, on day 4 there was a 24.2% and 72.6% attenuated worsening in the Caring Contact group compared to the control group for total symptom severity and SI, respectively. There was no significant interaction effect for the depression subgroup or those living alone. CONCLUSIONS While this pilot study was not powered to identify significant differences between groups, results are indicative of feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and provide some indication that Caring Contacts may have benefited patients in the days following discharge, supporting the need for larger-scale trials. The study was registered with clinicaltrials.gov (study ID NCT04456062).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have a prolonged impact on mental health (MH); however, the long-term MH effects of the COVID-19 pandemic remain unknown. The Serbian national survey-CoV2Soul.RS-was launched to document the MH status of the Serbian population following the COVID-19 pandemic and to contribute to an international evidence base about MH prevalence rates during different phases of the pandemic. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This cross-sectional study was designed to collect a nationally representative sample (N=1200; age 18-65 years; estimated start/end-June/November 2021) using multistage probabilistic household sampling. Trained staff will conduct in-person diagnostic interviews. A battery of self-report instruments will be administered to assess the quality of life (QoL), general distress and associated protective and harmful psychological and societal factors. Analyses will be conducted to delineate the prevalence rates of MH disorders, how MH conditions and QoL vary with respect to sociodemographic variables, personality, health status and traumatic events during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to test how these relations depend on geographical region. Moreover, this study was designed to explore mechanisms linking personality and the perception of pandemic consequences and associated distress. Prevalence rates of MH disorders will be calculated using descriptive statistics. For additional analyses, we will use correlations, analysis of variance and regression analyses. The hierarchical structure of the data will be explored using multilevel random coefficient modelling. Structural equation modelling will be used to investigate the indirect effects of personality on distress through relevant variables. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical Committees of the Faculty of Medicine (1322-VII/31) and Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade (02-33/273) and Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad (05-27, br.893/1) approved the protocol. Only respondents able to provide informed consent will participate in the study. Research reports will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals and the results will be placed on the website www.cov2soul.rs to be available to funders, researchers, policy-makers and interested laypeople, and will be advertised through social media.
