A one-step self-sustained low temperature carbonization of coconut shell biomass produced a high specific surface area biochar-derived nano-adsorbent

Modified lignin can achieve mitigation of ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously in composting

The constant ammonia gas (NH3) and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions were considered as a deep-rooted problem in composting which caused air pollution and global climate change. To achieve the mitigation of NH3 and GHG, a novel additive derived from wasted straw, with modified structure and functional groups, has been developed. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of modified lignin (ML) for both ammonium and nitrate was significantly increased by 132.5-360.8 % and 313.7-454.3 % comparing with biochar (BC) and phosphogypsum (PG) after reconstructing porous structure and grafting R-COOH, R-SO3H functional groups. The application of ML could reduce 36.3 % NH3 emission during composting compared with control. Furthermore, the synergetic mitigation NH3 and GHG in ML treatment resulted in a reduction of global warming potential (GWP) by 31.0-64.6 % compared with BC and PG. These findings provide evidence that ML can be a feasible strategy to effectively alleviate NH3 and GHG emissions in composting.

Coconut shell and husk biochar: A review of production and activation technology, economic, financial aspect and application

The coconut industry generates a relatively large amount of coconut shell and husk biomass, which can be utilized for industrial and environmental purposes. Immense potential for added value when coconut shell and husk biomass are turned into biochar and limited studies are available, making this review paper significant. This paper specifically presents the production and activation technology, economic and financial aspect and application of biochar from coconut shell and husk biomass. Pyrolysis, gasification and self-sustained carbonization are among the production technology discussed to convert this biomass into carbon-rich materials with distinctive characteristics. The surface characteristics of coconut-based biochar, that is, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (S_BET), pore volume (V_p), pore diameter (d_p) and surface functional group can be enhanced by physical and chemical activation and metal impregnation. Due to their favourable characteristics, coconut shell and husk-activated biochar exhibit their potential as valuable adsorption materials for industrial and environmental application including biodiesel production, capacitive deionization, soil amendment, water treatment and carbon sequestration. With the knowledge of the potential, the coconut industry can contribute to both the local and global biocircular economy by producing coconut shell and husk biochar for economic development and environmental remediation. The capital and operating cost for production and activation processes must be taken into account to ensure bioeconomy sustainability, hence coconut shell and husk biomass have a great potential for income generation.

Surface Functionalization of Biochar from Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch through Hydrothermal Process

The use of biochar as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment purposes has been hindered due to its lower surface area compared to activated carbon. Current research on increasing surface functional groups on biochar surfaces to improve its adsorption performance suggests using high chemical concentration and long period of modification. This study solves these problems by focusing on improving surface functionalities of biochar via the hydrothermal functionalization process. Oil palm empty fruit bunch biochar was functionalized using autoclave with nitric acid as the functionalization agent. Functionalized biochar properties such as Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and surface functional groups were analyzed and compared with untreated biochar. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis shows a significant increase in absorption by oxygen functional groups and is corroborated with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The process does not result in any major change in surface morphology and reduction in surface area value. Methylene blue (MB) adsorption test shows 7 times increase in adsorption performance. These results show that the simple hydrothermal functionalization process successfully functionalizes the biochar surface and improves its performance without affecting its surface area at lower concentration, and shorter time compared to previous studies. This result, with future large-scale experimentation using real-life equipment in palm oil mills, would provide a better technology that can be implemented in the industry.

A review of recent advancements in utilization of biomass and industrial wastes into engineered biochar

For past few years, biochar has gained a great deal of attention for its versatile utility in agricultural and environmental applications. The diverse functionality and environmental-friendly nature of biochar have motivated many researchers to delve into biochar researches and spurred rapid expansion of literature in recent years. Biochar can be produced from virtually all the biomass, but the properties of biochar are highly dependent upon the types of feedstock biomass and preparation methods. The overall performances of as-prepared biochar in treating soil and water contaminants is generally inferior to activated carbon due to its lower surface area and limited functionalities. This limitation has led to many follow-up studies that focused on improving material characteristics by imparting desired functionality. Such efforts have greatly advanced knowledge to produce better-performing engineered biochar with enhanced capability and versatility. To this end, this review was prepared to compile recent advancements in fabrication and application of engineered biochar, especially with respect to the influences of biomass feedstock on the properties of biochar and the utilization of industrial wastes in fabrication of engineered biochar.

Valorisation of Fruits, their Juices and Residues into Valuable (Nano)materials for Applications in Chemical Catalysis and Environment

One of the most abundant wastes from all around the world is nutrient resources. Among them, fruits, their extracts, and residues comprise a major portion, which contain many valuable components that get lost during disposal or become burden on the shrinking landfills. These concerns are addressed by seeking sustainable processing methods that would have a minimal environmental impact. The crops contain renewable chemicals which are useful for catalysis, wastewater treatment, or preparation of nanomaterials; there has been an upsurge for the industrial applications of (nano)materials as their environmental and catalytic appliances is a fascinating subject to design cheaper and safer catalytic systems. Due to the excellent chemical properties of the fruit extracts, they have garnered attention as cost-effective catalysts and support materials. This review focuses on the preparation of (nano)materials and their catalytic and environmental applications and highlights the potential appliances and industrial benefits derived from these low-cost renewable and sustainable greener sources thus essentially converting waste into wealth.
