Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with medical complexity (CMC) have high healthcare utilization and face unique challenges during hospital admissions. The evidence describing their experiences of inpatient care is distributed across disciplines. The aim of this scoping review was to map the evidence related to the inpatient experience of care for CMC and their families, particularly related to key aspects and methodological approaches, and identify gaps that warrant further study. METHODS This scoping review was conducted in accordance with JBI methodology and included all studies that reported experiences of acute hospital care for CMC/families. All study designs were included. Databases searched included EMBASE, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Web of Science, MEDLINE(R) and APA PsycInfo from 2000 to 2022. Details about the participants, concepts, study methods and key findings were abstracted using a data abstraction tool. A thematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS Forty-nine papers were included: 27 qualitative studies, 10 quantitative studies, six mixed methods studies, two descriptive studies and four reviews. Some quantitative studies used validated instruments to measure experience of care, but many used non-validated surveys. There were a few interventional studies with a small sample size. Results of thematic analysis described the importance of negotiating care roles, shared decision-making, common goal setting, relationship-building, communication, sharing expertise and the hospital setting itself. CONCLUSION CMC and families value relational elements of care and partnering through sharing expertise, decision-making and collaborative goal-setting when admitted to hospital. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This review was conducted in alignment with the principles of patient and family engagement. The review was conceptualized, co-designed and conducted with the full engagement of the project's parent-partner. This team member was involved in all stages from constructing the review question, to developing the protocol, screening articles and drafting this manuscript.

Abstract
PROBLEM Trust is central to the development of nurse-patient relationships. Pediatric nurses encounter difficulties developing trust with children and their caregivers. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify, examine, and summarize available evidence on the concept of trust among nurses and children/caregivers when admitted to hospital inpatient care units. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for conducing and reporting scoping reviews, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane DSR, Cochrane Central, and JBI EBP were searched for qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, and review studies with no time limits published in English. Included studies presented findings on the experiences of developing trust between pediatric nurses and children under 18 years of age and their caregivers within inpatient care units. RESULTS A total of 12,269 titles and abstracts were reviewed independently by two reviewers. 366 full-text articles were retrieved, a final of 81 studies were included in the review. CONCLUSIONS Trust was bi-directional between nurses and children/caregivers, developed over time during multiple interactions, and foundational to the development of relationships. Distinct facilitators and barriers to the development of trust between nurses and children/caregivers were identified. The development of trust was rewarding and enriching for both nurses and children/caregivers and was the fundamental to the provision of safe and high-quality nursing care. IMPLICATIONS Findings provide nurses with direction and strategies on how to develop and maintain trust with children/caregivers on inpatient care units. The development of training programs and interventions geared at equipping nurses with the skills to develop trust with children/caregivers is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, there is no consensus regarding the relationship between neonatal transfer and duration of hospitalization in cases of impaired mother-infant bonding (MIB). This study aimed to determine whether neonatal transfer and duration of hospitalization of newborns increase the risk for impaired MIB. METHODS The MIB Scale was used to assess impaired MIB 1 year after delivery, using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study. A score ≥ 5 points indicated impaired MIB. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the association between neonatal transfer and duration of hospitalization of newborns with the risk of impaired MIB. RESULTS A total of 66,402 pregnant women were included in the study. The overall incidence rate of impaired MIB was 11.2 %. The mean duration of hospitalization of newborns was 7.1 ± 6.4 days. After adjusting for potential confounders, neonatal transfer (adjusted odd ratio (OR): 1.13 [95 % confidence interval (CI)), 1.01-1.27]) and duration of hospitalization of newborns (adjusted OR 1.007; 95 % CI 1.003-1.010) were associated with impaired MIB. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the duration of hospitalization of newborns for impaired MIB was 0.53. LIMITATIONS Maternal childhood abuse and neglect history were not evaluated, and information regarding whether the infants were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit was unavailable. CONCLUSIONS Japanese women whose newborns underwent neonatal transfer should be followed up for at least 1 year after delivery, regardless of the duration of hospitalization of newborns.

Abstract
Caring for medically complex children (MCC) involves physical, financial, and emotional challenges for parents, who are often grieving the loss of their expectations or vision for a healthy child. We applied Miles' parental grief model to explore the experiences of 25 parent-caregivers who were interviewed for The Rare Life, a podcast in which a mother of a MCC interviews parents about their experiences caring for their MCC. We characterize parent-caregivers' experiences of shock; their intense grief, including yearning, helplessness, physical symptoms, behavioral changes, and a search for meaning; and the reorganization that helped them accept their parenting reality. In addition, we identified communicative barriers and facilitators that hindered and supported parent-caregivers' movement through the phases of grief.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to examine the association between mental health symptoms, along with psychological experiences and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related concerns, and self-reported maternal-infant bonding experiences of postpartum women. METHODS Using data collected from May 19 to August 17, 2020, this cross-sectional online study assessed 429 women to better understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women during the postpartum period. Enrolled respondents were asked to participate in a 30-45-min online survey about COVID-19-related experiences, pregnancy, stress, and well-being. RESULTS Postpartum women's depressive symptoms were related to lower quality maternal-infant bonding, but the anxiety symptoms were not associated with bonding. Maternal self-efficacy, but not social support, was associated with mothers' higher quality of maternal-infant bonding. COVID-19-related grief was significantly associated with lower quality bonding. On the other hand, COVID-19-related health worries were associated with higher quality of maternal-infant bonding. CONCLUSIONS We describe potential psychological risk factors to maternal-infant bonding among postpartum women during the pandemic period. To best support the medical and psychological well-being of the mothers and infants, enhanced interdisciplinary partnerships among perinatal healthcare professionals involved in primary and/or specialty care is needed. IMPACT Unique COVID-19-related health and grief concerns exist, with implications for maternal-infant bonding. Depression but not anxiety is associated with lower maternal-infant bonding. Caregiving confidence, but not social support, is associated with higher maternal-infant bonding. It is critical to screen for postpartum depression and COVID-19-related grief during maternal follow-up and pediatric visits. Study findings inform and prioritize pediatric interventions toward enhancing maternal-infant bonding during the COVID-19 era.
