Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient satisfaction helps healthcare organizations to improve their quality level and nurse-patient relationship is effective in increasing satisfaction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of communication using Peplau's theory on satisfaction with nursing care in hospitalized older adults' patients in cardiac intensive care unit. MATERIALS AND METHODS This quasi-experimental study was conducted by available sampling method on 78 hospitalized older adults (39 interventions, 39 control) in cardiac intensive care unit of Guilan hospitals in north of Iran in 2021. In the intervention group, Peplau's communication theory (four stages of orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution) was implemented and the control group received routine care. At the time of discharge, patient satisfaction questionnaire of quality of nursing care was completed for both groups. Data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics (independent t test, Chi-square test). RESULTS The mean score of nursing satisfaction in the intervention group (5.4 ± 93.0) was significantly higher than the control group (6.8 ± 75.7) (t (64) = 11.54, P < 0.001, d = 2.84). In other words, the mean satisfaction scores of nursing care in the intervention group were 17.4 units (95% confidence interval: 14.4-20.4) more than the control group. CONCLUSION Using Peplau's communication theory in the care of hospitalized older adults in cardiac intensive care unit can lead to improvement of satisfaction, so it is suggested to use this communication method in the care of these patients to improve the level of satisfaction, quality of care, and functional independence.

Abstract
AIM To explore the perceptions of nursing students from Brazilian universities about the interpersonal relationship of the nursing team in the work environment. BACKGROUND Healthcare institutions are complex entities where diverse professionals from different educational backgrounds work together to provide high-quality care to the population. The effective coordination of services within these institutions is closely linked to the interpersonal relationships among these different healthcare professionals. Nurses play a crucial role as members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, acting as fundamental links between other professionals and patients. DESIGN This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. METHODS An online, open-ended questionnaire was used. A total of 30 nursing students participated in the study. RESULTS Data were organized in two themes: (1) Interpersonal relationships of the nursing team and (2) Improving interpersonal relationships of the nursing team. Also, eight sub-themes were identified: Conflict dynamics within the nursing team, Hierarchical issues, Lack of communication, Impact of workplace interpersonal relationships on nursing students, Valuing the profession, Understanding role boundaries, Training in effective communication and conflict management, and Curricular reform. CONCLUSIONS Blurred boundaries between professional roles, lack of respect, ineffective communication, hierarchical issues, and conflicts, were identified. Of particular concern was the limited interaction observed between the nursing team and multidisciplinary/support teams. Inadequate interpersonal relationships between members of the health team reflect negatively on nursing students during their clinical placements. These findings underscore the urgent need for interventions aimed at improving interpersonal relationships within nursing teams.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Using therapeutic techniques and conducting motivational interviews in communication with patients with schizophrenia increases individuals' functional remission, insight, and motivation levels. AIM This single-blind, randomized controlled study examines the effect of Interpersonal Relations Theory-Based motivational interviews on functional remission and insight levels in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS The participants of this study were 40 patients with schizophrenia randomly assigned to either the experimental or control groups (20 in each group). The researchers carried out a 6-session Interpersonal Relations Theory-based motivational interview with the participants in the experimental group. Study data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia Scale (FROGS), and the Scale for Assessing the Three Components of Insight (SAI). RESULTS Social Functioning, Health and Treatment, Daily Living Skills, and SAI scores of the individuals in the intervention group were statistically higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05) in the post-intervention and follow-up measures. There was a positive and significant correlation between the post-intervention Social Functioning, Health and Treatment, Daily Life Skills, and total FROGS scores and the SAI score of the individuals in the intervention group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that motivational interviews based on Interpersonal Relations Theory were effective in increasing the insights and functionality of patients with schizophrenia. Psychiatric nurses' practice of motivational interviews based on the therapeutic relationship is considered to increase the quality of care and satisfaction of patients with schizophrenia. It is recommended that this practice be used extensively in clinical practice.

Abstract
Communication in nursing is essential to the quality of care and patients' satisfaction, and personal variables such as empathy and emotional intelligence (EI) can improve it; however, no studies have to date analyzed these competencies and their relations among nursing students compared with nurses. The aims of this study are, therefore, to analyze the differences between nursing students and nurses in the means for empathy, EI and attitudes towards communication in order to assess the impact of empathy and EI on nurses' and nursing students' attitudes towards communication, and their influence on the behavioral dimension of attitude. A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on a convenience sample of 961 nursing students and 460 nurses from the Valencian Community, Spain. T-test and hierarchical regression models (HRM) were used. The data was collected in the selected universities in the 2018/2019 academic year. The results showed high levels in all the variables analyzed (i.e., empathy, EI, and attitudes towards communication) in both samples. The HRM results suggested that empathy was a better predictor than EI of the attitudes towards patient communication among both the nursing students and nurses. In the behavioral dimension of the attitude, the cognitive and affective dimensions had greater weight than the emotional component (i.e., empathy and EI). Developing empathy and the cognitive dimension of the attitude in nursing students and nurses could, therefore, help improve EI and attitudes towards communication. These findings are important for developing intervention programs adjusted to real needs.

Abstract
Introduction: The quality of nursing care has been evaluated using patient perception. Patients’ participation in nursing care and decision-making is regarded as a prerequisite for effective clinical practice; however, poor communication can lead to incorrect diagnosis and delayed, or ineffective medical treatment. Objectives: This study sought to assess admitted adult patients’ perceptions of, and factors influencing, nurse communication at public hospitals in Harar, eastern Ethiopia. Methods: Facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 377 admitted adult patients in Harar Town public Hospitals from 15 April to 30 May 2020. A proportionate stratified sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A pretested and structured questionnaire was used to collect data through a face-to-face interview and which were entered into EpiData and analyzed using SPSS. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted, odds ratio and confidence intervals were calculated and statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05. Results: This study outlined that the overall prevalence of good perception toward nurses’ communication was 41.9% (95% confidence interval = 37.1%, 46.9%). Patients whose age group were 26–35 years (adjusted odds ratio = 0.46 (95% confidence interval: 0.24, 0.86), Being female patients (adjusted odds ratio = 1.89; 95% confidence interval: 1.20, 2.98), admitted in private room (adjusted odds ratio = 3.25; 95% confidence interval: 1.91, 5.51), patients who have family support (adjusted odds ratio = 2.56; 95% confidence interval: 1.16, 3.64), urban residence (adjusted odds ratio = 0.65; 95% confidence interval: 0.02, 0.66) and language difference (adjusted odds ratio = 0.61; 95% confidence interval: 0.40, 0.94) were statistically significant. Conclusion: This study pointed out that less than half of the study participants had good perceptions toward nurses’ communication. As a result, increasing the number of health care providers who speak the same language as the patients and communication and behavioral change training must be prioritized.

Abstract
Proposes Delivery of healthcare involves engagements of patients, nurses and other health professionals. The Social Identity Theory (SIT) can provide a lens to investigate intergroup interactions. This study explores how male nurses deal with intergroup tensions and conflicts with patients and physicians when delivering healthcare. Methods A collaborative qualitative research study was conducted by two research teams, with one from Mainland China and the other from Macau. Twenty-four male nurses were recruited, with 12 from each of the two regions. A similar guide was used by the two teams to conduct in-depth interviews with the participants. Thematic analysis was used, and SIT guided the data analysis and interpretation of the results. Results Four themes identified are related to nurse/patient relationships: respecting patients’ decisions, neglecting minor offenses, defending dignity, taking a dominant position; two themes are related to nurse/physician relationships: rationalizing physicians’ superiority over nurses, establishing relationships with physicians by interpersonal interactions. Conclusion Male nurses avoid confrontation with patients in case of disagreements but take on gender- and profession-based dominance in dealing with intense conflicts to maintain healthcare order. They do not challenge the status hierarchy between nurses and physicians but manage to maintain harmonious relationships with physicians by engaging in interpersonal activities with physicians in leisure times. Implication Male nurses can take the lead to create inclusive groups to engage patients and physicians in delivering healthcare. The masculine traits of male nurses do not subvert the nurse/physician hierarchy stereotype but strengthen it. ![]()

Abstract
BACKGROUND Communication is an integral part of life and of nurse-patient relationships. Effective communication with patients can improve the quality of care. However, the specific communication needs of older adults can render communication between them and nurses as less effective with negative outcomes. METHODS This scoping review aims at describing the type of nonverbal communication used by nurses to communicate with older adults. It also describes the older adults' perceptions of nurses' nonverbal communication behaviors. It followed (Int J Soc Res 8: 19-32, 2005) framework. Grey literature and 11 databases were systematically searched for studies published in English and French, using search terms synonymous with nonverbal communication between nurses and older adults for the period 2000 to 2019. RESULTS The search revealed limited published research addressing nonverbal communication between older adults and nurses. The studies eligible for quality assessment were found to be of high quality. Twenty-two studies were included and highlighted haptics, kinesics, proxemics, and vocalics as most frequently used by nurses when communicating with older adults; while studies showed limited use of artefacts and chronemics. There was no mention of nurses' use of silence as a nonverbal communication strategy. Additionally, there were both older adults' positive and negative responses to nurses' nonverbal communication behaviors. CONCLUSION Nurses should be self-aware of their nonverbal communication behaviors with older adults as well as the way in which the meanings of the messages might be misinterpreted. In addition, nurses should identify their own style of nonverbal communication and understand its modification as necessary in accordance with patient's needs.

Abstract
100 bachelor students participated in a research project integrated in their clinical placements. They assessed patients admitted at a certain date/time regarding pain/pain intensity and risk of decubitus, falling and nutritional problems. In the current study is examined the students' learning experiences from participating in this project through focus group interviews. Data analysis of electronically recorded and transcribed interviews following Braun and Clarke's six phases of thematic analysis. Although pressed for time the students felt able to adapt their communication to patients' various situations, explain about the project, receive a signed consent form, and do the data collection. During the project they had honed their communicative skills, become more confident, and able to utilise their theoretical knowledge to reflect, observe, assess, and act. They were able to attune their communication to the various patients and create a trusting relationship which made the assessments possible in spite of the brevity of their meetings. In spite of this mainly interpersonal focus we trust that this first empirical research experience will enhance their ability to read and understand research papers. Furthermore, the students found they had learned a lot and acquired greater understanding of the connection between theory and practical patient work.

Abstract
Despite the importance of the therapeutic relationship on nursing practice, the literature regarding teaching and learning therapeutic relationship is limited. This paper discussed how an undergraduate nursing student learned therapeutic relationship in an acute care setting. Narrative inquiry was applied as a research methodology. The student's reflection served as the narrative in this paper. Collaboratively, researchers conducted data analysis, common themes were drawn, and a summative narrative was presented. Based on the student's narrative, a three-dimensional model, including practical knowledge, theory, and reflection, has been created as our summative narrative. This model suggests that, to facilitate a learning process on creating therapeutic nurse-patient relationship, practical knowledge is the foundation, theory is a leading guide, and constant reflection is a learning tool which transforms learning into a reflective and meaningful experience. To promote learning on therapeutic relationship, nurse educators should emphasize the importance of both practical knowledge and theory. Constant reflection as a learning tool should be encouraged and embedded in nursing curriculum. Diverse approaches of reflection should be promoted.

Abstract
There are numerous barriers to the therapeutic relationship between nurses and persons with schizophrenia, such as time constraints, communication issues and the requirements of practice policies. The main point of this paper is that the nature of these barriers is such that the nurse may not conceptualize these as barriers or be aware of how his or her responses to these can further entrench existing barriers to relationship or create new ones. If the nurse is not aware of how he or she responds to time pressure, frustration or lack of clarity of practice policy and address this, there is a risk that the patient may perceive the nurse's actions as lacking in care, presence or involvement. As consumers increasingly embrace recovery approaches to mental health that prioritize therapeutic activities within the context of collaborative relationship, psychiatric nurses, with a long tradition of therapeutic relationship, can rise to meet them. It is suggested here that this can only occur if nurses are fully aware of barriers to relationship, their responses to these and the impact of these on relationship with patients. Suggestions for educational and empirical work to further raise awareness and promote understanding of this process are provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses are expected to support people to self-manage. Student nurses therefore need to master competencies that include the assessment of peoples' needs and preferences, and shared decision-making, whilst respecting and enhancing peoples' autonomy. Adapting nurse education programmes to meet this goal requires insight into the practice of teaching self-management support. In order to reveal this practice, one can distinguish between the intended, the taught, and the received curriculum. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore how Dutch Bachelor of Nursing students are educated to support peoples' self-management in clinical practice. DESIGN Mixed methods. METHODS AND PARTICIPANTS Focus group meetings with 30 lecturers, and qualitative semi-structured interviews with four coordinators and four (associate) professors of four Dutch schools for Bachelor of Nursing. Syllabuses were screened for learning objectives related to self-management. A survey measuring self-efficacy and behaviour regarding self-management support was distributed among 444 final-year students of these schools, resulting in 238 valid responses (response rate 53.6%). RESULTS Much attention is paid in the curriculum to assessment of people's preferences and healthcare education but less attention is given to teaching the arrangement of follow-up care. The study further reveals that students have problems transferring theory into practice, and that they experience conflicting values between their nurse education and internships. CONCLUSIONS Currently, students are taught to provide people with self-management support by learning about theoretical models, developing communication skills, and reflecting on their internships. This approach seems inadequate to prepare students for this task in daily practice. A shared view on self-management support based on authentic situations, having role models at university and on internships and empowering students may enable them to better support people to self-manage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stressed family carers engage in health-risk behaviours that can lead to chronic illness. Innovative strategies are required to bolster empathic dialogue skills that impact nursing student confidence and sensitivity in meeting carers' wellness needs. PURPOSE To report on the development and evaluation of a promising empathy-related video-feedback intervention and its impact on student empathic accuracy on carer health risk behaviours. DESIGN A pilot quasi-experimental design study with eight pairs of 3rd year undergraduate nursing students and carers. METHODS Students participated in perspective-taking instructional and practice sessions, and a 10-minute video-recorded dialogue with carers followed by a video-tagging task. Quantitative and qualitative approaches helped us to evaluate the recruitment protocol, capture participant responses to the intervention and study tools, and develop a tool to assess student empathic accuracy. MAIN RESULTS The instructional and practice sessions increased student self-awareness of biases and interest in learning empathy by video-tagging feedback. Carers felt that students were 'non-judgmental', inquisitive, and helped them to 'gain new insights' that fostered ownership to change their health-risk behaviour. There was substantial Fleiss Kappa agreement among four raters across five dyads and 67 tagged instances. CONCLUSION In general, students and carers evaluated the intervention favourably. The results suggest areas of improvement to the recruitment protocol, perspective-taking instructions, video-tagging task, and empathic accuracy tool.
