Gastrointestinal neoplasia is uncommon in horses. Clinical signs can be vague and advanced testing, including biopsy, exploratory surgery, and/or advanced imaging may be required for diagnosis. Prognosis varies by location, organ involved and is frequently poor to grave.

Abstract
Liver neoplasms are quite rare in childhood. They often involve 6.7 cases per 10 million children aged 18 years or younger. Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most frequent tumor, but this neoplasm’s rarity points essentially to the difficulty of performing biologic studies and large-scale therapeutic trials. On the pathological ground, HB is separated into an entirely epithelial neoplasm or a mixed neoplasm with epithelial and mesenchymal components. This last category has been further subdivided into harboring teratoid features or not. The ‘teratoid’ HB includes a mixture of components with heterologous origin. The heterologous components include neuroectoderm, endoderm, or melanin-holding cells with or without mesenchymal components. The most important criterium for the teratoid component is neuroepithelium, melanin, and, more recently, a yolk-sac-like component and neuroendocrine components. The mesenchymal components include muscle, osteoid, and cartilage, which are most often observed mainly in ‘teratoid’ neoplasms. The teratoid component or mesenchymal components are diagnosed with biopsies. They appear more prominent after chemotherapy due to the response and shrinkage of epithelial elements and non- or low-responsive components of mixed HB. This review focuses on the clinical, radiological, and pathological findings of HB with teratoid features.

Abstract
Hepatoblastoma was diagnosed in a 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding presented with forelimb lameness with bilateral fatigue fractures of the proximal third metacarpal bones. An abdominal mass was detected on ultrasound examination of the abdomen. Absolute erythrocytosis was diagnosed after clinical and haematological evaluation. The fractured metacarpal bones were surgically removed but complications after surgery were fatal. The liver mass was diagnosed as a hepatoblastoma based on histology and immunochemical staining. The combination of hepatoblastoma and fatigue fractures has not been described previously in horses. A potential link between the hepatic and orthopaedic pathologies is hypothesised.

Abstract
A premature dead equine fetus with excessive fluctuating distension of the abdomen was delivered by extraction. Post-mortem examination revealed ascites and a solitary, irregular, bulging, multinodular, firm, yellow mass of 25 cm in diameter in the right liver lobe. Extensive peritoneal implantation metastases were present. The masses were composed of polygonal embryonal cells arranged in sheets and nests. Based on the immunohistochemical expression of Ki67, low molecular weight cytokeratin and alpha-1 fetoprotein, a diagnosis of hepatoblastoma with peritoneal implantation metastases was made.

Abstract
Significant progress has been made in understanding and monitoring the causes of equine abortion over past decades. However, not all in utero pathology results in abortion. It has long been recognised that some in utero pathology, such as twinning or chronic placentitis, can result in the birth of live but growth-retarded foals and there is historical evidence that birth weight may influence future athletic performance. Clinical experience (e.g. from twins) and experimental studies (pony-Thoroughbred embryo transfer) have highlighted the importance of reduced functional placental area in limiting growth in utero in horses. Many other nonfatal in utero pathologies (e.g. umbilical cord-related circulatory compromise) can potentially affect either placental function or other organ systems. Their influence on the short- and long-term health of the foal and its future athletic performance is in many cases poorly documented or understood. This review summarises the main causes of in utero pathology and reflects on how these may potentially affect the foal if born alive, highlighting the need for long-term studies on this important subject.

Abstract
Hepatoblastoma (HB) is an uncommon pediatric liver tumor in humans and horses. In humans, HB is most frequently diagnosed in fetuses, neonates, and young children, whereas hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) affects juvenile and adult humans. Hepatoblastoma in the horse is rare, with only 9 reported cases. Affected horses ranged in age from late-term aborted fetuses to 3 years. The current study describes 3 new cases of primary liver tumors in horses and reviews findings in relation to other reports on this condition. Tumors classified as HB were identified in a male Standardbred aborted fetus and in a 4-year-old Thoroughbred filly. Hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed in a 15-month-old Paint filly. In the Standardbred fetus, the tumor was only present in the liver. In the Thoroughbred and Paint fillies, primary tumors were in the right liver lobe and at the hilus, respectively, and there were metastases to other lobes (HB) and mesenteric lymph nodes (HCC). Tumors were sharply demarcated from adjacent tissue, nonencapsulated, compressive, and invasive. Consisting of cords and nests, or disorganized sheets of epithelial cells, tumors had variable stromal and vascular components. The fetal tumor contained areas of smaller, less differentiated cells with a pronounced mesenchymal component interpreted to be embryonal hepatic tissue. Diagnoses were based on tumor histomorphologic features, resemblance to hepatocyte developmental stages, age of the animal, and patterns of metastasis. Tumors classified as HB were α-fetoprotein immunoreactive. Primary hepatic tumors in the horse are diverse in morphology and include subtypes compatible with classification criteria applied to human tumors.

Abstract
A 10-month-old Thoroughbred filly was presented with a 2-month history of recurrent fever and pleural effusion. Major clinical findings were pyrexia and congested mucous membranes. Clinical pathology tests revealed an erythrocytosis, hyperfibrinogenaemia and hyperglobulinaemia. Pleural fluid was seen on ultrasonographic examination of the thorax and analysis of a thoracocentesis sample indicated a lymphocytic, modified transudate. A transtracheal aspirate was normal. The erythrocytosis persisted despite IV fluid therapy. Arterial blood gas analysis and bone marrow aspirate were normal. These findings were indicative of secondary inappropriate erythrocytosis. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen showed a large encapsulated heterogeneous mass in the left lobe of the liver. Histopathological evaluation of a biopsy of the mass was indicative of a hepatic carcinoma. The filly was euthanased and necropsy confirmed the presence of a hepatic tumour with no evidence of systemic metastasis. Further histopathological evaluation confirmed the tumour to be an embryonal macrotrabecular epithelial-type hepatoblastoma, a type of hepatoblastoma that has not previously been reported in a horse.

Abstract
Hepatoblastoma was diagnosed in 3 Thoroughbreds at the University of Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC) since 1997. Case #1 involved a fetus with a well-demarcated, multilobulated, solitary mass that extended from the left liver lobe. Case #2 was observed in a neonate with a primary hepatic mass and multiple metastases in the skin, brain, meninges, and stylohyoid bone. Case #3 was a solitary hepatic mass incidentally discovered in a neonate at necropsy. Microscopically, the masses were similarly composed of sheets and cords of fetal and embryonal epithelial cells that frequently formed sinusoid-like structures. Intermixed with the neoplastic epithelial cells were variable amounts of hemorrhage, necrosis, osteoid, and bone. Immunohistochemically, the epithelial cells stained variably positive for alpha- fetoprotein, frequently positive for vimentin, and occasionally positive for cytokeratin. All 3 cases were diagnosed as mixed hepatoblastoma with teratoid features.

Abstract
The molecular pathogenesis of chemically induced hepatocellular neoplasms and hepatoblastomas in the B6C3FI mouse is unclear but may involve alterations in the fi-catenin/Wnt signaling pathway as was recently described for human liver neoplasms. The objectives of this research were to characterize the mutation frequency and spectrum of P-catenin mutations and the intracellular localization of I-catenin protein accumulation in chemically induced hepatoblastomas and hepatocellular neoplasms. In the majority of the hepatoblastomas examined by immunohistochemical methods, both nuclear and cytoplasmic localization of P-catenin protein were detected, whereas in hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas and normal liver only membrane staining was observed. Genomic DNA was isolated from paraffin sections of each liver tumor. P-catenin exon 2 (corresponds to exon 3 in humans) genetic alterations were identified in the majority of hepatoblastomas from exposed mice. Deletion mutations were identified more frequently than point mutations in hepatoblastomas. Hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas from treated mice had mutations in exon 2 of the B-catenin gene which ranged from 32-43%, while 10% P-catenin mutations were detected in spontaneous neoplasms. By immunohistochemical methods cyclin Dl was observed in most nuclei of hepatoblastomas and strong expression of cyclin Dl was confirmed by Western analysis regardless of treatment. The cumulative data suggests that P-catenin mutations with upregulation of the B-catenin protein and Wnt signaling most likely increased cyclin Dl expression. Cyclin D1 may provide an advantage during tumor progression of hepatocellular neoplasms and hepatoblastomas. The review will also focus on other genes which are important in mouse and human liver tumors.

Abstract
The literature on congenital tumours and tumour-like lesions in horses was reviewed. Included were embryonic tumours and teratomas. Special attention was paid to the ubiquitous adenomatous hyperplasia of the placenta. It appears that temporal teratomas, interstitial hamartomas and placental adenomatous hyperplasia are unique in the horse. Benign teratoma of the undescended testis is far more frequent in the horse than in other species. In horses, as in calves and pigs, congenital skin tumours were of papillomatous, vascular and melanocytic types. The sporadic occurrence of congenital tumours in the horse did not provide an etiologic or pathogenetic clue. The possibility of oncogenic viruses in cases of congenital skin papilloma or malignant lymphoma could neither be proven, nor be excluded. Hereditary tumours were not encountered.

Abstract
A 2.5-year-old female Thoroughbred was examined because of lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss. Analysis of a CBC revealed erythrocytosis and an increase in PCV. Serum biochemical analysis revealed increases in activities of several hepatic enzymes. Ultrasonography revealed hepatomegaly and a heterogeneous appearance of the hepatic parenchyma. The horse did not improve despite supportive care, and it was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed numerous raised white to gray foci in the liver. Histologically, these foci consisted of neoplastic cells that resembled fetal hepatocytes, embryonal-type cells, and cells with features intermediate between those 2 cell types. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that hepatocytes stained strongly with anti-alpha-fetoprotein. On the basis of these results, hepatoblastoma was diagnosed. Diagnosis of hepatoblastoma is difficult, because it can appear histologically similar to other hepatic tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinomas. Definitive diagnosis requires histologic evaluation of tumor architecture and cell morphology. Immunohistochemical staining for alpha-fetoprotein in tumor cells may serve as a tumor marker but is not pathognomonic of hepatoblastoma. Paraneoplastic syndromes, such as erythrocytosis, can accompany hepatoblastoma. The prognosis for horses with hepatoblastoma is grave.

Abstract
An overview is presented of current management strategies in primary hepatic tumours in children. Recent advances include research in the genetic and molecular properties, especially of hepatoblastoma, the application of pre-operative chemotherapy, and the development of pre-surgical staging. Problem areas include management of relapse, chemotherapeutic drug resistance and multifocality. Hepatocellular carcinoma continues to have a much worse outcome than hepatoblastoma.
