Identification and comparison of interventions performed by Korean school nurses and U.S. school nurses using the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC)

Zusammenfassung. Hintergrund: Das international etablierte Berufsbild der Schulgesundheitspflege ist in Deutschland noch nicht flächendeckend implementiert. In ersten Modellprojekten und einigen internationalen Schulen kann bereits die Umsetzbarkeit des Konzepts und der Arbeitsalltag von Schulgesundheitspflegenden in Deutschland beobachtet werden. Drängende und derzeit oft ungelöste Aufgaben im Setting Schule sind die Inklusion chronisch kranker Schüler_innen und die Gesundheitsförderung in der Lebenswelt. Ziel: Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Beschreibung der Interventionen von Schulgesundheitspflegenden im Schulalltag. Methode: Mittels eines standardisierten Onlinefragebogens wurden Schulgesundheitspflegende in Deutschland hinsichtlich ihrer durchgeführten Tätigkeiten und zu deren Häufigkeit befragt. Die Tätigkeiten wurden basierend auf der Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) erhoben. Die Daten wurden mittels deskriptiver Statistik ausgewertet. Ergebnisse: Die Befragten ( n = 25) sind schwerpunktmäßig in der Akutversorgung und der Gesundheitsedukation bzw. -förderung tätig. Pflegeinterventionen, die einen familiären oder populationsbezogenen Ansatz haben, werden lediglich alle 2–3 Monate oder seltener von dem Durchschnitt der Befragten angewandt. Schlussfolgerungen: Die tägliche intensive Inanspruchnahme diverser Pflegeinterventionen deutet auf einen dringenden Bedarf an pflegerischer Expertise in der Schule hin.

NASN is celebrating 50 years of supporting the health needs of children and the practice needs of the school nurses who provide those services. This is the sixth and last in a series exploring the power of NASN's past, its celebration of the present and preparing for NASN to be a force of the future. This article builds on the historical precedents of NASN's history to develop a vision for its next 50 years. Examining the changing landscape of healthcare provides the outline of NASN's potential to advance child health.

Enhancing the Capacity of School Nurses to Reduce Excessive Anxiety in Children: Development of the CALM Intervention

PROBLEM

Excessive anxiety is among the most common psychiatric problems facing youth. Because anxious youth tend to have somatic complaints, many seek help from the school nurse. Thus, school nurses are in an ideal position to provide early intervention. This study addresses this problem and describes the plans to develop and test a new intervention (Child Anxiety Learning Modules; CALM), delivered by school nurses, to reduce child anxiety and improve academic functioning.

METHODS

An iterative development process including consultation with an expert panel, two open trials, and a pilot randomized controlled study comparing CALM to usual care is proposed. Feedback will be solicited from all participants during each phase and data on outcome measures will be provided by children, parents, teachers, and independent evaluators.

FINDINGS

Data will be collected on intervention satisfaction and feasibility. Primary outcomes that include child anxiety symptoms, classroom behavior, and school performance (e.g., attendance, grades, standardized test scores) will be collected at pre- and post-interventions and at a 3-month follow-up evaluation.

CONCLUSIONS

Pediatric anxiety is a common problem that school nurses frequently encounter. Consequently, they are well positioned to play a key role in enhancing access to behavioral health interventions to reduce anxiety and may therefore make a significant positive public health impact.

Comparison of Indirect Nursing Interventions Performed by Korean and U.S. Nurses Using the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) System

PURPOSE

The purposes of this study were to identify frequency and time spent performing indirect nursing interventions by Korean nurses, and to compare the time spent on indirect nursing interventions with estimates of time spent by U.S. nurses.

METHODS

Data were collected from 721 registered nurses working in eight hospitals in Korea. U.S. data were obtained from the fifth edition of the Nursing Interventions Classification published in 2008.

RESULTS

Korean nurses took more time with 4 interventions, and U.S. nurses took more time with 13.

CONCLUSIONS

In general, Korean nurses spent less time performing indirect interventions than did U.S. nurses.

IMPLICATION

Information from this study will help nurse administrators in their decision-making processes regarding managing units and staffing.
