Abstract
OBJECTIVE Caveolae are closely linked to the onset and progression of atherosclerosis. The pivotal involvement of caveolin-1 (CAV1) within the caveolae in atherosclerosis development has been consistently supported. However, the potential contributions of additional caveolae proteins to atherosclerosis necessitate further exploration. Therefore, this research aimed to afford clinical evidence linking CAVIN-2 to diabetic peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its role in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) transcytosis. METHODS Blood samples were collected from a total of 115 participants, including 36 patients without diabetes (ND), 26 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and 53 patients with T2DM and PAD (DM-PAD). The plasma levels of CAV1, CAVIN-1, and CAVIN-2 were measured by ELISA. The correlation between CAV1, CAVIN-1, CAVIN-2, and diabetic PAD was examined using Spearman correlation analysis. The predictive effect of CAV1 and CAVIN-2 were analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Cellular experiments were used to investigate the effect and mechanism of CAVIN-2 on LDL transcytosis. RESULTS Elevated CAV1 and CAVIN-2 levels were observed in T2DM and DM-PAD groups, with a positive correlation to DM-PAD and PAD severity. Both CAV1 and CAVIN-2 emerged as predictors of DM-PAD. In vitro, CAVIN-2 knockdown decreased LDL transcytosis, while CAVIN-2 overexpression increased it. Additionally, CAVIN-2 was found to inhibit eNOS activation and nitric oxide (NO) production, thereby promoting LDL transcytosis and atherosclerosis progression. CONCLUSION CAVIN-2 was positively correlated with DM-PAD and promoted LDL transcytosis through the inhibition of eNOS activation, contributing to atherosclerosis development. This study provided clinical evidence linking CAVIN-2 to diabetic PAD and suggested its potential as a biomarker for disease progression.

Abstract
Background C1q tumor necrosis factor (TNF) related proteins 9 (CTRP9) is a novel adipocytokine that has been shown to have a cardioprotective effect in coronary artery disease (CAD). However, there are conflicting results on circulating levels of CTRP9 in patients with and without CAD. This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the association between circulating CTRP9 levels and CAD. Objective The aim of this meta-analysis was to re-examine the relationship between circulating CTRP9 levels and CAD. Methods We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang Data, and CBM for relevant studies up to October 2023, and 193 articles were identified. After reading the title, abstract and full text, a total of 25 articles were included in this meta-analysis. A prespecified protocol registered at INPLASY was followed (INPLASY202450066). Due to the high heterogeneity, we performed subgroup analyses and meta-regression based on patient characteristics, complications, clinical biochemical indicators, coronary artery lesion, and CAD classification. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's linear regression tests, Begg's rank correlation tests, and funnel plots. Results The results showed that the patient with CAD had significantly lower circulating CTRP9 levels than the control group (Z = 3.26, P = 0.001). Subgroup analysis and meta-regression findings demonstrated that observed heterogeneity could be attributed to population distribution. Patient characteristics (year of publication, patients' age, and BMI), complications (diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)), clinical biochemical indicators, coronary artery lesion (stability of coronary atherosclerotic plaque, and the number of diseased coronary vessels), and classification of CAD were not identified as source of heterogeneity. Conclusions The meta-analysis confirmed that circulating CTRP9 levels in CAD patients are significantly lower than those in patients without CAD. The association may be modified by the population distribution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Remnant cholesterol (RC) has been correlated with a higher risk of atherosclerosis. It has been confirmed that in the general population, an elevated RC level is related to a 5-fold higher risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for PAD development. However, the association between RC and PAD in the specific population of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has not been investigated. Herein, the correlation was investigated between RC and PAD in T2DM patients. METHODS In the retrospective study, the hematological parameter data of 246 T2DM patients without PAD (T2DM - WPAD) and 270 T2DM patients with PAD (T2DM - PAD) was collected. Differences in RC levels between the two groups were compared, and the association between RC and PAD severity was examined. Multifactorial regression was used to determine whether RC was a significant contributor to the development of T2DM - PAD. The diagnostic potential of RC was tested using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS The RC levels in T2DM - PAD individuals were considerably greater than in T2DM - WPAD individuals (P < 0.001). RC had a positive correlation with disease severity. Further, multifactorial logistic regression analyses found that elevated RC levels were a major contributor to T2DM - PAD (P < 0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) of the RC for T2DM - PAD patients was 0.727. The cut-off value of RC was 0.64 mmol/L. CONCLUSION The RC levels were higher in T2DM - PAD patients, and were independently linked with its severity. Diabetic patients with RC levels > 0.64 mmol/L had an elevated risk of developing PAD.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that adipokines may be therapeutic targets for cardiometabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). C1q TNF Related Protein 3 (CTRP3) is a newly discovered adipokine which shares properties with adiponectin. The literature about the association between circulating levels of CTRP3 and T2DM has been conflicting. The present study reassessed the data on circulating CTRP3 levels in T2DM patients compared to controls through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A literature search was performed in Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Web of science to identify studies that measured circulating CTRP3 levels in T2DM patients and controls. The search identified 124 studies of which 59 were screened for title and abstract and 13 were subsequently screened at the full text stage and 12 studies included into the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses, depending on the presence of T2DM complications, matching for BMI, age, and cut off value of fasting blood sugar and HOMA-IR, were performed. The results show that circulating CTRP3 levels are negatively associated with T2DM status (SMD: -0.837; 95% CI: (-1.656 to -0.017); p = 0.045). No publication bias was identified using the Begg's rank correlation and Egger's linear regression tests (P = 1 and P = 0.44, respectively). Meta-regression demonstrated significant association between CRTP3 levels with BMI (slope: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.04-0.19; p = 0.001) and sex (slope: -0.07; 95% CI: -0.12 to -0.01; p = 0.008). The present systematic review and meta-analysis evidences a negative association between circulating level of CTRP3 and T2DM status. BMI and sex may modify this association.

Abstract
Over the past decades, there has been a major increase in type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence in most regions of the world. Diabetic patients are more prone to cardiovascular complications. Accumulating evidence suggests that adipose tissue is not simply an energy storage tissue but it also functions as a secretory tissue producing a variety of bioactive substances, also referred to as adipokines. The balance between pro-inflammatory adipokines and protective adipokines is disturbed in type 2 diabetes, this can be regarded as adipose tissue dysfunction which partly promote the pathogenesis of diabetes complications. In this review, we not only discuss the favorable adipokines like adiponectin, omentin, C1q tumor necrosis factor-related proteins, but also unfavorable ones like resisitin and visfatin, in the aim of finding potential biomarkers recommended for the clinical use in the diagnosis, prognosis and follow up of patients with T2D at high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases as well as leading to new therapeutic approaches.
