Association Between Perceived Social Support and Depressive Symptoms Among Community-Dwelling Older Chinese Americans

Mediating effect of social support on the relationship between social activity and depressive symptoms among older widows in Taiwan

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between social activity and depressive symptoms among older widows in Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted that recruited 256 older widows in southern Taiwan. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, self-rated health, instrumental activities of daily living, social activity, social support, and depression. Multiple linear regressions performed examined whether social activities and social support were significantly associated with depressive symptoms and which types of social activity were significantly related to social support and depressive symptoms. Mediation analyses performed tested the mediation effect of social support between the number of different types of social activities performed (termed "number of activities" in this study) and depression. Overall, 17.2% of the participants reported having at least two depressive symptoms. The total effect of the number of activities on depressive symptoms was significant (p < .001). The direct pathway from the number of activities to depressive symptoms remained significant (p < .001), and the mediation pathway (from the number of activities to depressive symptoms through social support) was also significant (Bootstrap CI = -.072, -.003). These findings demonstrated that older widows had more social support when they participated in more social activities, which could then decrease depressive symptoms. In addition, informal community group activities and religious group activities were the most effective at increasing social support and reducing depressive symptoms among the older Taiwanese widows.

The Association between Residential Environment and Self-Rated Mental Health among Older Canadians: The Moderating Effects of Education and Gender

This study examined the associations between residential environment and self-rated mental health (SRMH) among Canadians aged 65 or older (n = 16,304) and whether education and gender moderated the associations. Data came from the 2018 Canadian Housing Survey. Hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted to test the associations. Analyses revealed that increased dwelling size was associated with better SRMH among older women with high school education. Older adults with higher satisfaction with their dwelling design were more likely to report better SRMH, except for women with some college education. Feeling safer in the community was uniquely associated with better SRMH for men with high school education and women with a university degree. Results confirmed significant associations between specific home and residential environment features and SRMH for each gender-by-education group. Environmental programs designed to improve SRMH for older adult populations should consider within- and between-group diversity.

Impact of COVID-19 on Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Coping, and Grief in Pre-Health Professional Students in Lima, Peru

Introduction: Peru had the world's highest death rate of COVID-19 with 213,000+ deaths and counting (Beaubien, 2021). Hospitalization and care for COVID-19 patients with limited resources has added stress to the shortage of frontline workers and resulted in students filling in the gap in acute care clinical settings. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 on mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress, and coping) and grief on undergraduate nursing and pharmacy students in Lima, Peru. Methods: This was a quantitative, descriptive study that examined students' self-report of mental health and grief at baseline during data collection. Results: Significant findings were reported in coping based on death of family member of COVID-19 (p = .02). Anxiety was positively correlated with grief (Rho = 0.35, p < .001), stress (Rho = 0.53, p < .001), and depression (Rho = 0.76, p < .001). Grief was positively correlated with stress (Rho = 0.25, p < .001) and depression (Rho = 0.39, p < .001). Finally, stress was positively correlated with depression (Rho = 0.51, p < .001). Discussion: This is the first study to explore nursing and pharmacy students' perceptions on how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their mental health.

Gender Variation and Late-life Depression: Findings from a National Survey in the USA

Based on the Wave 3 National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (2015-2016), this study has extensive breadth in examining the roles of multiple stressors (i.e., health-related, social relationship, community) and coping resources (i.e., social participation and social support from family and friends) in explaining depressive symptomatology among a recent cohort of the U.S. national sample of community-dwelling older men (n = 1,431) and women (n = 1,673). Statistical additive and interactive models were tested. Results from this pre-COVID study serve as a baseline, and show that gender had significant independent and joint effects on stress and coping factors in explaining depressive symptoms. Parallel regression analyses were conducted for each group. Findings suggest that significantly more women (26.9%) reported depressive symptoms than men (19.9%) (CESD-11 score ≥ 9). Multivariate analyses show that unique predictors for older men's depression include less support from friends, more cognitive challenges, and feeling less control in life. For women, less social participation, less emotional support from spouse, greater IADL impairment, and family disharmony were more significantly associated with their depressive symptoms than men's. Contrary to the literature, community factors were not statistically significant in predicting depressive symptoms. Findings suggest that correlates of depressive symptoms impact older women and men differently. Results point to the need for gender-sensitive mental health services and programs to protect community-dwelling older adults in USA against depression, especially in light of the recent COVID era social proximity restrictions.

Effectiveness of Social Support for Community-Dwelling Elderly with Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Depression in the elderly is an important health factor that requires intervention in the form of social support resources. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review, while synthesizing available evidence on what kind of social support, such as social participation and social connection/network, is effective for depression in the elderly. We performed a quality assessment of the included studies using the revised Risk of Bias for Non-randomized Studies tool and a meta-analysis of studies published up to 14 May 2021. Of the 3449 studies, 52 were relevant to this study. The various types of social resource applications reported in these were classified into three types: social support, social participation, and social connection/network. The social support group had significantly lower depression compared to the control group (0.72 [0.65, 0.81], p < 0.00001, I2 = 92%). There was a significant decrease in depression in the social participation group compared to the control group (0.67 [0.56, 0.80], p < 0.00001, I2 = 93%) (2.77 [1.30, 5.91], p = 0.008, I2 = 97%) (0.67 [0.56, 0.80], p < 0.00001, I2 = 93%). Finally, the social connection/network group showed decreased depression compared to the control group (2.40 [1.89, 3.05], p < 0.00001, I2 = 24%) (0.83 [0.76, 0.90], p < 0.00001, I2 = 94%). The results of this systematic review confirmed the effects of various social support interventions in reducing depression among the elderly living in the community.

The Psychological Well-Being of Older Chinese Immigrants in Canada amidst COVID-19: The Role of Loneliness, Social Support, and Acculturation

This study examined the effects of loneliness, social support, and acculturation on psychological well-being, as indexed by general emotional well-being and life satisfaction, of older Chinese adults living in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 168 older Chinese adults, recruited via WeChat and the internet, completed an online study through a facilitated Zoom or phone meeting, or through a website link, individually or in a group. The testing package included demographic information, The UCLA Loneliness Scale, The Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, Vancouver Index of Acculturation, The Satisfaction with Life Scale, and The World Health Organization’s Five Well-Being Index. The results showed that the psychological well-being (both general emotional well-being and cognitively perceived life satisfaction) was positively predicted by perceived social support but negatively predicted by loneliness. Acculturation was not predictive of both outcomes, and it did not moderate the predictive relationships of social support or loneliness. The results shed light on the importance of community services that target enhancing social support and reducing loneliness in promoting psychological well-being of older Chinese immigrants in Canada amidst and post the pandemic.

Pathways among Frailty, Health Literacy, Acculturation, and Social Support of Middle-Aged and Older Korean Immigrants in the USA

Culturally and linguistically different immigrants in the U.S. are considered populations with low health literacy in general, thereby having a high risk of negative health outcomes such as frailty. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of social support and acculturation on the relationship between health literacy and frailty of Korean immigrants in existing models of health literacy. A total of 244 Korean immigrants aged 50 years and older residing in Southern United States (Alabama and Georgia) were recruited. Path analysis was used to examine the pathways among variables, and the indirect effects of health literacy were analyzed. The results revealed that health literacy and social support directly influenced frailty; social support and acculturation were identified to influence health literacy. Health literacy had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between social support and frailty and a complete mediating effect in the relationship between acculturation and frailty. Therefore, to prevent frailty, it is necessary to consider enhancing immigrants' health literacy by elevating acculturation and social supports.

The associations between social support and negative social interaction with suicidal ideation in US Chinese older adults

To examine associations between social support and negative social interaction with past suicidal ideation (SI) at multiple time intervals. The study used cross-sectional data collected from 3157 US Chinese older adults in Chicago to assess past 2-week, 1-month, 1-year, and lifetime SI. Self-perceived social support and negative social interaction were measured. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations. People perceived more social support and less negative social interaction were 17-19% less likely to have SI. People perceived more social support were 14-20% less likely to have SI. Meanwhile, people perceived more negative social interaction were 28-37% more likely to have SI. The independent associations between different social interaction and SI are significant regardless of the time intervals. Research should pay attention not only to bolstering perceptions of social support, but also to strategies that help individuals cope with the influence of negative social interactions.

Association between physical function and perceived stress among U.S. Chinese older adults

Objectives

Physical function impairment can cause great stress to older adults. The purpose of the study is to investigate the association between self-reported and directly-observed physical function on perceived stress among U.S. Chinese older adults.

Methods

Data were from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (PINE) of 3,157 Chinese older adults who were 60 and above in the Greater Chicago Area. Self-reported and directly-observed physical function measures, and Perceived Stress Scale were used.

Results

Participants had a mean age of 72.8 ± 8.3 years old (range 60–105). Higher scores of Katz activities of daily living impairments (odds ratio [OR]=1.77), Lawton instrumental activities of daily living impartments (OR=1.10, p<0.01), Rosow–Breslau index of mobility scale (OR=1.39, p<0.05), and Nagi index of basic physical activities scale (OR=1.19, p<0.001) were associated with higher levels of perceived stress. In addition, higher scores of directly-observed physical function measurements, including chair stand (OR=0.93), tandem stand (OR=0.71, p<0.05), timed walk (OR=0.73, p<0.001), and the overall measurement (OR= 0.87, p<0.01) were associated with lower level of perceived stress.

Discussion

Findings suggested that poor physical function was associated with perceived stress among U.S. Chinese older adults. Longitudinal studies are needed to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the pathways between physical function and perceived stress.

Implications for practice

Health care professionals could provide personalized physical activity interventions to encourage older adults to engage in regular exercise in order to maintain and promote older adults’ physical function and psychological well-being.

Utilization of Mental Health Services Among Older Chinese Immigrants in New York City

Older immigrants are at risk of developing mental illness. This study aims to examine mental health service utilization among older Chinese immigrants, using a mixed-method design. Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use informed an examination of predictors of mental health services utilization, and semi-structured individual interviews were conducted to illuminate these findings. Participants who were younger, had less than a high school education, and had a higher level of depressive symptoms were more likely to use mental health services. Stressors of psychological distress included breakdown of support system, language barriers, and financial hardships. Factors influencing mental health services use included information from family/friends, referrals from primary care physicians, perceived needs for help, mental health stigma, and culturally competent mental health professionals. Understanding the factors associated with seeking mental health services for older Chinese immigrants could help health care providers to develop early screening programs and culturally sensitive interventions.

Elder mistreatment and psychological distress among U.S. Chinese older adults

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to examine the associations between different types of elder mistreatment, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms among U.S. Chinese older adults.

METHODS

Data were derived from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly (PINE), a study of Chinese older adults aged 60 years and above in the greater Chicago area from 2011-2013. Measurements include elder mistreatment screening tools, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Negative binomial regressions and logistic regressions were performed.

RESULTS

Participants with any mistreatment, psychological mistreatment, physical mistreatment, financial exploitation, and caregiver neglect were more likely to have anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms. Sexual mistreatment was not associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression.

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS

The rate of psychological distress differs based on the types of mistreatment among U.S. Chinese older adults. The findings underline the need for public and community awareness and improved education for health care professionals.

Mediating effects of depressive symptoms on social support and quality of life among rural older Chinese

BACKGROUND

It is not well clear how psychosocial factors like depressive symptoms, social support affect quality of life in rural elderly in China. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms in the association between social support and quality of life.

METHODS

Cross-sectional data of 420 rural elderly were taken from four villages in Hangzhou City. They were interviewed with a demographic questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression, the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) for social support, and the short version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF) for quality of life. Mediation was examined by a nonparametric Bootstrapping method, controlling for socioeconomic variables.

RESULTS

Poor quality of life was associated with low social support and increased depressive symptoms. A significant indirect effect of social support existed through depression in relation to quality of life (ab = 0.0213, 95% CI [0.0071, 0.0421]), accounting for 9.5% of the effect of social support on quality of life. Approximately 4.8% of the variance in QOL was attributable to the indirect effect of social support through depressive symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

Depressive symptoms mediated the impact of social support on quality of life among rural older adults.

Association of Psychosocial Symptoms, Blood Pressure, and Menopausal Status in African-American Women

African-American women have disproportionate rates of hypertension that can be further complicated as they transition through menopause. Stress, coupled with depression and hypertension in perimenopausal African-American women has not been fully explored. This study examines the associations of stress, depression, and social support on systolic blood pressure (SBP) among a sample of 184 perimenopausal African-American women. We used descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and logistic regression to analyze data stratified by menopausal status (perimenopausal or menopausal) and SBP status (<130 mmHg vs. >130 mmHg). Women classified as menopausal reported higher levels of stress and depressive symptoms, and lower levels of social support. Age, body mass index (BMI), health insurance, and perceived health status were significant predictors of SBP in menopausal women. Stress, depression, and social support did not play a role in SBP. It is necessary that future research focus on reducing cardiovascular risk include addressing menopausal health.
