Abstract
Introduction Primary care is an essential component of any health system, but building high-quality primary care has proven to be a challenge for most developing countries. Among the multiplicity of providers in South Asia, one of the most ubiquitous channels through which not only medicines are obtained but also primary care advice is sought is the neighborhood pharmacy. There are widespread availability of pharmacies in South Asia. There is also good evidence that working with pharmacies in this way is a globally accepted idea, and there are several examples of countries, such as France and Nigeria, that have integrated pharmacies into their primary care systems and entrusted them with significant responsibilities. Methods In this paper, we explore the potential of this channel as a formal primary care provider, with a particular focus on the South Asian context, by examining how pharmacies perform against the seven Starfield attributes of (i) first contact care, (ii) continuity of care, (iii) comprehensiveness, (iv) coordination, (v) family centredness, (vi) cultural competency, and (vii) community orientation. In the paper, we use data on pharmacies from four pharmacy-related interventions, one from Bangladesh and three from India, to carry out our analysis using the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) framework. Results We find that even in the South Asian context, pharmacies provide several components of good primary care. As expected, they demonstrate a strong orientation toward the community in which they are located and are able to provide first-contact care. However, we find no direct evidence that they are able to offer continuity of care or bring to bear family-centredness and cultural competency when dealing with their patients. It is encouraging, however, that while there is no formal evidence of this in any of the interventions, multiple anecdotal examples suggest that pharmacists do indeed do much of this, but perhaps in an informal and inconsistent manner. Discussion The evidence from these studies provides support for the view that pharmacies have many of the inherent characteristics needed to become an effective primary care channel and already play an important role in providing access to health information and care. However, it is also clear from the research that without additional training and access to tools, pharmacies will not have the competency or knowledge necessary to provide these services or even act as an effective gateway to other healthcare providers. To fully unlock this opportunity, therefore, any organization that wishes to engage with them will need to have the vision and patience to work with this network for an extended period of time and not merely aspire for incremental improvements but have a strategy in place that fundamentally changes the capabilities and the roles that pharmacies can play.

Abstract
Lack of access to the patient medical record (90.6%) was the major barrier for the integration of pharmaceutical care into practice. The majority of participants (93.0%) encouraged creating a website that provides pharmaceutical care. Furthermore, 45.1% would pay for such a service if present. Moreover, the majority (89.8%) agreed that creating a comprehensive database for patients’ data will help in decreasing medical errors. Among the four aspects of pharmaceutical care (technical, psychosocial, communication and administrative) that were assessed for students and pharmacist’s, general weakness in all aspects was noticed. This study highlights that absence of proper documentation of patient medical information raises the risk of medical problems and is considered the most documented barrier for the integration of pharmaceutical care. This emphasizes the future role of telemedicine and the availability of a specialized website and database repository that stores patient’s information to ensure the continuity of care even during pandemics.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE New pharmacy curricula include content that equip students with a bundle of professional and interpersonal skills that allows the provision of evidence-based patient-centred pharmaceutical care (PC). PC has been adopted as a practise model underpinning these new roles for pharmacists in developed countries. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that countries in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region have been relatively slow in including PC in pharmacy education. There seems to be a need to more accurately describe the extent to which PC is included in pharmacy education in the MENA region. The objective of this systematic review was (a) to determine the status of PC education in schools and colleges of pharmacy in the MENA region and (b) to identify pharmacy students' and/or educators' perceptions and attitudes towards PC, preparedness level to PC provision and perceived barriers to implement this practise model in countries of the MENA region. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, International Pharmaceutical Abstract and ProQuest databases to identify articles published from 2000 to 2021. Selection of studies for inclusion in the review was based on a pre-determined eligibility criterion to retrieve original research articles addressing the review objectives. RESULTS Nine articles were eligible for inclusion in the review. The majority of the studies (n = 8) employed a survey-based research method. The studies were conducted in Jordan (n = 4), Kuwait (n = 2), Qatar (n = 2), Saudi Arabia (n = 1) and United Arab Emirates (n = 1). The findings suggest that pharmacy students had overall positive attitude and perception towards PC and some studies reported that students expressed good preparedness levels to implement most of the PC aspects. Several barriers to the implementation of PC were reported such as the slow educational reforms in pharmacy programs and a number of organizational and professional barriers. The studies provided recommendations for improvements in the pharmacy curricula to support pharmacy students' preparation to become competent PC practitioners. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION The literature describing PC education in the MENA region is limited. Joint efforts among educational institutions and health authorities are needed to support PC implementation. There is a need to conduct further research to explore the status of PC education and practise in the different countries within the MENA region. This can drive future directions of pharmacy education to meet the needs of the pharmacy profession and healthcare systems in these countries.

Abstract
Background: One of the parts of the broadly understood pharmaceutical care is health promotion. Therefore, the study aimed to find out how pharmacy students in Poland assess their own readiness to promote health in pharmacies and their own qualifications, competences, relevance, motivation and effectiveness of health promotion in pharmacies. Methods: The study conducted in 2019 comprised 206 pharmacy students from Poland. The authors’ survey questionnaire had two parts: Readiness to promote health in pharmacies; and Qualifications, competences, relevance, motivation and effectiveness of health promotion in pharmacies. Results: The students assessed the system solutions regarding health promotion as insufficient. The highest assessment was given to their own readiness to promote health. In between those was assessment of readiness to promote health by pharmacists as an occupational group. Readiness to promote health at a workplace in a pharmacy was assessed higher than in a local community. The students gave the highest assessments to the relevance and motivation to promote health, and the lowest to their own competences to promote health. In between those, their qualifications and effectiveness to health promotion in pharmacies. were assessed. Conclusions: Pharmacy students consider themselves ready and motivated to promote health, that is of a great importance in their opinion, and they could potentially play an important role in improving the health care of patients.

Abstract
AIM Osteoporosis is a major risk factor for fractures. Poor persistence with osteoporosis medication hampers outcomes. This study assessed whether encouraging the formation of patient-led follow-up cooperatives between general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists improved medication persistence. METHODS All consecutive patients who attended an osteoporosis patient education program were invited to participate. They were given a logbook containing questionnaires they would bring to 6-monthly visits to their GP and pharmacist. The effect of this 3-year cooperative follow-up on persistence with medication and lifestyle changes was assessed. RESULTS In total, 121 patients (average age, 67 years; 93% female) participated. Poor cooperation between GPs and pharmacists was noted. Nevertheless, medication persistence ranged from 83% to 91% over the 6 visits. However, since patient drop-out rates were high and questionnaire return rates were low, a post-study medical chart review was performed. This confirmed that persistence was high (74%-83%) at 3 years post-enrollment, even for oral bisphosphonate-treated patients (73%-76%). However, adoption of anti-osteoporosis lifestyle changes was poor throughout the study: one- to two-thirds of the patients did not alter their diet, physical activity, or surroundings to prevent falls. CONCLUSION One study goal, namely, to encourage GPs and pharmacists to cooperate in patient follow-up, was not achieved. However, high medication persistence was observed. This may reflect the education program, patient empowerment, personalized attention from study personnel, and being in a study. Patient-centered approaches can thus significantly increase medication persistence in osteoporosis. Ongoing education may be needed to improve patient adoption of and persistence with lifestyle changes.

Abstract
RATIONALE, AIMS, AND OBJECTIVES The practice of hospital pharmacists in many developing countries has been changing to include the delivery of direct patient care services, but practice change can be a challenging process. This article explores the perceptions of hospital pharmacists in Kuwait about the enablers and challenges to expanding their scope of practice to include direct patient care. METHODS A phenomenological qualitative approach was employed to conduct focus group interviews to explore pharmacists' perceptions about their professional practice at different hospitals across Kuwait. Data were collected from 110 pharmacists using 11 focus group interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using framework analysis. RESULTS The practice of most hospital pharmacists includes limited direct patient care role. However, a growing number of pharmacists have been introducing clinical pharmacy services at hospitals. Three themes about enablers to practice change emerged from data: (a) increasing physicians' acceptance to pharmacists' role in patient care, (b) patients' trust in pharmacists' knowledge about medications, and (c) pharmacists' perceived benefits of providing direct patient care. These benefits includes enhancing patients' safety and adherence to therapy and improving the professional identity of pharmacists. Participants' perceived challenges to practice change include professional, individual, and organizational challenges. Most participants welcomed assuming direct patient care role. They agreed that pharmacists need to receive adequate education and training and to be equipped with a clinical degree to responsibly provide direct patient care services at hospitals. CONCLUSIONS Pharmacists have been increasingly attempting to provide clinical pharmacy services in Kuwait hospitals. This qualitative data revealed breadth of challenges hindering pharmacists' attempts to expand their professional practice to include direct patient care role. It also outlines facets of improvement and enablers to practice change. The collaboration between different stakeholders in the profession is essential to support pharmacists' efforts in achieving the change in the scope of pharmacy practice to improve patient care services.

Abstract
Background: Indonesian community pharmacies hold a strategic position from which to
promote the rational use of medicines by providing appropriate advice for
patients requesting self-medication. To date, published studies related to
the provision of advice in Indonesian community pharmacies are limited and
have been conducted only in more developed western Indonesia. No studies
have been undertaken in eastern Indonesia, which is less developed than and
culturally different from the western region. Objectives: This paper aims to: (1) describe the types and amount of advice provided by
pharmacy staff for three scenarios in a patient simulation study and for two
scenarios in pharmacy staff interviews; and (2) ascertain the frequency of
appropriate advice given in response to the scenarios. Methods: A patient simulation study was conducted at community pharmacies in an
eastern Indonesian provincial capital. Four weeks after completing a patient
simulation study, structured interviews with pharmacy staff were conducted.
Two cough scenarios and one diarrhoea scenario were developed for the
patient simulation study. Meanwhile, two scenarios (an ACE inhibitor-induced
cough and a common cough and cold) were developed for pharmacy staff
interviews. The types and amount of advice provided by pharmacy staff were
recorded on paper and assessed for its appropriateness. The determination of
appropriate advice was based on the literature and by consensus of two
Indonesian experts. Results: In patient simulation, the most common type of advice provided in all
scenarios was product recommendations. In interviews, medical referrals and
recommending cough and cold medicine were the most common types of advice
provided for ACE inhibitor-induced cough and common cough and cold scenarios
respectively. Appropriate advice was provided in less than 0.5% in
the patient simulation study, but two-third of participants in the
interviews responded to the scenarios appropriately. Conclusions: Pharmacy staff did not provide appropriate advice in practice, although they
may have adequate knowledge. A contributing factor was insufficient
information gathered in patient encounters. Optimising information-gathering
practice by pharmacy staff is needed.

Abstract
Background Hospital pharmacists are an integral part of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes globally. Currently, little is known as to how hospital pharmacists see their role and involvement within the AMS framework. Objectives To assess the current level of involvement of Australian and French hospital pharmacists in AMS programmes and identify barriers limiting their involvement in AMS. Methods Hospital pharmacists throughout Australia and France were invited to participate in a nationwide online survey throughout March-May 2016. The survey was promoted through the national hospital pharmacists' association in Australia, while a stratified sampling method was used in France to invite pharmacists working in a variety of hospital settings. Results Invitations to participate in this survey were sent to 334 Australian pharmacists and 482 French pharmacists. Responses from 133 Australian and 126 French pharmacists were included for analysis. A total of 78.4% (203/259) of pharmacists reported the presence of an AMS programme. Pharmacists were most likely to be involved in AMS through assessing total antibiotic consumption and participating in AMS committee meetings. Barriers to participating in AMS included a lack of time and substantial non-clinical activities limiting involvement in AMS. Differences in responses were found between the two countries. Conclusions While the majority of pharmacists reported the presence of an AMS programme, multiple barriers to participation were identified by pharmacists in both countries. Further research should consider how to overcome the identified barriers to optimize the involvement of pharmacists in AMS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over recent years, the profession of pharmacy has transitioned towards providing more individualised patient care services. In this context, community pharmacy has proven to be an excellent facilitator for weight management programs. However, education on weight management in pharmacy undergraduate curricula is often lacking. The perspectives of early career pharmacists on their perceived role in weight management services and their associated educational needs can inform curricula review. METHODS In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 final year pharmacy students of The University of Sydney and five early career pharmacists from the greater Sydney, Australia area. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed for themes emerging. RESULTS Participants were positive about their perceived role in providing weight management services. They regarded a program not based on commercial products as most suitable for pharmacy-delivered weight management services. However, some barriers were identified, such as lack of training and communication skills related to weight management. Participants requested more educational resources to ensure the delivery of high quality weight management services. DISCUSSION Methods to enhance (future) pharmacists' knowledge of weight management services could include case-based learning, enhancement of communication skills, and the development of suitable guidelines. CONCLUSIONS Participants perceived a clear role for themselves in providing weight management services in community pharmacies. However, the current educational system does not meet their requirements to prepare them for this role. A hands-on approach in education on weight management and appropriate communication skills should be introduced in pharmacy curricula to ensure future pharmacists are well prepared to deliver weight management services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Using the medicines reconciliation tool which involves preparing an updated list of patient's medications at each transition of care can significantly enhance patient safety. The pharmacist has been leading this process in western healthcare systems. Little is known about pharmacists' role in medicines reconciliation in Middle Eastern Countries. OBJECTIVES To explore the implementation of medicines reconciliation in Kuwait hospitals, pharmacists' role in this process and perceptions of the challenges in implementing it in practice. METHODS This was an exploratory descriptive study of medicines reconciliation practices at eleven secondary/tertiary hospitals in Kuwait. A mixed-methods research design was used whereby 110 hospital pharmacists participated in 11 focus groups and 88 of them completed self-administered surveys. RESULTS Participants reported that medicines reconciliation is poorly applied in hospitals and that they had limited role in the process. The current medicines reconciliation policy does not assign any responsibilities for pharmacists in this process. The most significant barriers to applying medicines reconciliation by pharmacists were inadequate staff numbers, lack of time, difficult access to patient information, lack of policy to support pharmacist role and patients' poor knowledge about their medications. CONCLUSIONS Hospital pharmacists in Kuwait advocate implementing medicines reconciliation but report significant strategic/operational barriers to its application. Efforts are needed in policy reform and team training to enable pharmacists provide effective patient care services including medicines reconciliation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize the activities of clinical nature developed by pharmacists in basic health units and their participation in educational activities aiming at health promotion. METHODS This article is part of the Pesquisa Nacional sobre Acesso, Utilização e Promoção do Uso Racional de Medicamentos - Serviços, 2015 (PNAUM - National Survey on Access, Use and Promotion of Rational Use of Medicines - Services, 2015), a cross-sectional and exploratory study, of evaluative nature, consisting of a survey of information in a representative sample of cities, stratified by the Brazilian regions that constitute domains of study, and a subsample of primary health care services. The interviewed pharmacists (n=285) were responsible for the delivery of medicines and were interviewed in person with the use of a script. The characterization of the activities of clinical nature was based on information from pharmacists who declared to perform them, and on participation in educational activities aiming at health promotion, according to information from all pharmacists. The results are presented in frequency and their 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS From the interviewed subjects, 21.3% said they perform activities of clinical nature. Of these, more than 80% considered them very important; the majority does not dispose of specific places to perform them, which hinders privacy and confidentiality in these activities. The main denominations were "pharmaceutical guidance" and "pharmaceutical care." The registration of activities is mainly made in the users' medical records, computerized system, and in a specific document filed at the pharmacy, impairing the circulation of information among professionals. Most pharmacists performed these activities mainly along with physicians and nurses; 24.7% rarely participated in meetings with the health team, and 19.7% have never participated. CONCLUSIONS Activities of clinical nature performed by pharmacists in Brazil are still incipient. The difficulties found point out to the professionals' improvisation and effort. The small participation in educational activities of health promotion indicates little integration of pharmacists with the health team and of pharmaceutical services with other health actions.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the link between the rank at the national pharmacy residency examination and the choice of pharmacy specialty for hospital residency-admitted French pharmacy students. Methods: Examination ranks as well as the pharmacy residency specialty to which residency candidates are finally admitted were collected for all students (n=1948) having successfully passed the national French pharmacy residency examination over the period 2013-2016. Students were categorized by their pharmacy specialty for residency, i.e., “Medical Biology” (n=591), “Hospital Pharmacy” (n=1175) and “Pharmaceutical Innovation and Research” (n=182), and medians of examination ranks as well as limit ranks (the rank of the last admitted postulant) by specialty were compared. Results: Examination ranks for pharmacy residency-admitted students were found to significantly differ according to the nature of the specialty in which students were finally admitted. “Medical Biology” has the lowest examination ranks (and appears thus as the most selective specialty), followed by “Hospital Pharmacy” and ended by “Pharmaceutical Innovation and Research”, that has the highest examination ranks (and appears thus as the least selective specialty). Limit examination ranks were additionally shown to discriminate university hospitals in which residents were assigned. Conclusion: Specialty choice for hospital residency-admitted French pharmacy candidates is closely associated with their rank at the national pharmacy residency examination, which can be assumed as reflecting their academic level. By this way, an implicit hierarchy of French pharmacy residency specialties according to the academic level of postulants can likely be drawn.

Abstract
Objective. To determine pharmacy interns' perceptions of the roles of the pharmacist and pharmacy prior to and during the pharmacy internship and to compare their perceptions with those of their supervisors and the pharmacy customers. Methods. Questionnaires were completed and submitted by 395 interns prior to and during their internships. Interns interviewed their supervisors and two to four local customers. Results. Ninety-six supervisors and 285 customers were interviewed. Interns' perceptions were aligned with those of their supervisors in that both groups indicated that a pharmacist's most important role is that of a clinical leader. Furthermore, interns' perception of customers' expectations regarding the pharmacy were well aligned with customers' actual expectations with regard to service. Conclusion. The study illustrates that interns became more aligned in their perceptions due to the pharmacy internship. The study findings imply that the pharmacy internship influences interns' perception of the pharmacy and pharmacist's roles in society through complex individual and social learning processes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In France, community pharmacy students performed a hospital pharmacy practice experience during the 5th year of the university curriculum. The purpose of a part of the content of the academic teaching program delivered before this practice experience is to prepare the students for their future hospital activities. It should enable them for the practical use of knowledge in order to improve pharmacotherapy, laboratory diagnosis and monitoring of patients' care. The aim of this study was to show if there are gaps in this program. METHODS Fourteen students performing their clerkship in a teaching hospital were invited to highlight these gaps when they were gradually immersed in the pharmaceutical care. They did so under the careful observation of hospital pharmacist preceptors. These practitioners referred to professional guidelines, documentary tools used in daily clinical practice and publications supporting their pharmaceutical care practices. RESULTS Shortcomings and gaps identified were: how to communicate with other healthcare professionals and the content of verbal exchanges, how to conduct a patient-centered consultation, documentation tools required for relevant pharmacist' interventions, codification of pharmacist's interventions, risks related to drug packaging and benefit risk assessment of health information technologies. DISCUSSION These gaps represent a handicap by delaying the process that led to move from student to healthcare professional. Hospital pharmacist preceptors have to fill in these gaps before engaging students in pharmaceutical care. CONCLUSION These results invite to revise partly the content of the academic teaching program delivered before the 5th year hospital pharmacy practice experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pharmaceutical care practice has been championed as the primary mission of the pharmacy profession, but its implementation has been suboptimal in many developing countries including Kuwait. Pharmacists must have sufficient knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes to practise pharmaceutical care, and barriers in the pharmacy practice model must be overcome before pharmaceutical care can be broadly implemented in a given healthcare system. OBJECTIVE To investigate hospital pharmacists' attitudes towards pharmaceutical care, perceptions of their preparedness to provide pharmaceutical care, and the barriers to its implementation in Kuwait. SETTING Six general hospitals, eight specialized hospitals and seven specialized health centers in Kuwait. METHOD A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was distributed to all pharmacists working in the governmental hospitals in Kuwait (385 pharmacists). Data were collected via a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics including percentages, medians and means Likert scale rating (standard deviations) were calculated and compared using statistical package for social sciences, version 20. Statistical significance was accepted at a p value of <0.05. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Pharmacists' attitudes towards pharmaceutical care, perceptions of their preparedness to provide pharmaceutical care competencies, and the barriers to its implementation in Kuwait. RESULTS Completed surveys were received from 250 (64.9%) of the 385 pharmacists. Pharmacists expressed overall positive attitudes towards pharmaceutical care. They felt well prepared to implement the various aspects of pharmaceutical care, with the least preparedness in the administrative/management aspects. Pharmacists with more practice experience expressed significantly more positive attitudes towards pharmaceutical care (p = 0.001) and they felt better prepared to provide pharmaceutical care competencies (p < 0.001) than those with less experience as practitioners. The respondents agreed/strongly agreed that the most significant barriers to the integration of pharmaceutical care into practice were lack of private counseling areas or inappropriate pharmacy layout (87.6%), organizational obstacles (81.6%), inadequate staff (79.6%), and lack of pharmacist time and adequate technology (76.0%). CONCLUSION Hospital pharmacists in Kuwait advocate implementation of pharmaceutical care while also appreciating the organizational, technical and professional barriers to its widespread adoption. Collaborative efforts between health authorities and educational institutions, and the integration of innovative approaches in pharmacy management and education could overcome these barriers and achieve the transition towards pharmaceutical care practice.

Abstract
Despite its high prevalence and major public health ramifications, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) remains underdiagnosed. The aim of this study was to determine whether the involvement of a community pharmacist (CP) in the care pathway of a patient at risk of OSAS, through the implementation of a community pharmacist (CP) intervention, was effective, i.e. increased the use of diagnostic tests in this population. We compared a cohort of patients included in a research protocol (exposed to a CP intervention) with patients having the same characteristics taken from a general population database who did not receive the intervention (unexposed group). The aim of the CP intervention was to educate patients about the risk of untreated OSAS, encouraging them to consult their general practitioner, and urging the doctor to continue investigations. We included 782 patients at risk of OSAS, i.e. taking one or more anti-hypertensive drugs, being overweight (body mass index >25) and snoring almost every night (88 in the exposed group and 694 in the unexposed group). After a 6-month follow-up, the number of patients who underwent an OSAS diagnostic test was significantly higher in the exposed group compared to the unexposed group (22.7 versus 11.4%, P = 0.003). Being exposed to the pharmacist intervention was associated with a higher chance of undergoing a diagnostic test for OSAS, adjusted odds ratio: 2.24 (1.25-4.01). In conclusion, these findings provide arguments for the implementation of a CP OSAS screening intervention in CP routine practice.

Pharmacy education should equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to practise pharmaceutical care competently. OBJECTIVE To investigate pharmacy students' attitudes towards pharmaceutical care, perceptions of their preparedness to perform pharmaceutical care competencies, opinions about the importance of the various pharmaceutical care activities, and the barriers to its implementation in Kuwait. METHODS A descriptive, cross-sectional survey of pharmacy students (n=126) was conducted at Faculty of Pharmacy, Kuwait University. Data were collected via a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics including percentages, medians and means Likert scale rating (SD) were calculated and compared using SPSS, version 19. Statistical significance was accepted at a p value of 0.05 or lower. RESULTS The response rate was 99.2%. Pharmacy students expressed overall positive attitudes towards pharmaceutical care. They felt prepared to implement the various aspects of pharmaceutical care, with the least preparedness in the administrative/management aspects. Perceived pharmaceutical care competencies grew as students progressed through the curriculum. The students also appreciated the importance of the various pharmaceutical care competencies. They agreed/strongly agreed that the major barriers to the integration of pharmaceutical care into practice were lack of private counseling areas or inappropriate pharmacy layout (95.2%), lack of pharmacist time (83.3%), organizational obstacles (82.6%), and pharmacists' physical separation from patient care areas (82.6%). CONCLUSION Pharmacy students' attitudes and perceived preparedness can serve as needs assessment tools to guide curricular change and improvement. Student pharmacists at Kuwait University understand and advocate implementation of pharmaceutical care while also recognizing the barriers to its widespread adoption. The education and training provided at Kuwait University Faculty of Pharmacy is designed to develop students to be the change agents who can advance pharmacist-provided direct patient care.

Abstract
Implementation of pharmaceutical care (PC) in Poland is of great importance to patients, who, on the one hand, often follow complex pharmacological treatment regimens recommended by several physicians of different specialties, and, on the other, take up the decision on self-treatment due to availability of OTC medications. The aim of the present study was to assess the opinion of both patients and physicians about implementation of PC service in Polish community pharmacies. A cross sectional study was carried out from September 2009 to September 2010 by a pharmacist (author of the study) on the basis of an anonymous questionnaire, where demand of physicians (n = 104) and patients (n = 202) for implementation of PC in a community pharmacy was assessed. The study was planned to determine the relationship between implementation of PC, cost and time of this service and patients’ and physicians’ socio-economic information. Responding patients (85.64%) and physicians (76.92%) unanimously confirmed the need for implementation of PC. Most people convinced of the service implementation were 88.89% of physicians under the age of 35 and all the respondents were over 65 years of age (p = 0.027), just as 93.33% with service lesser than 5 years and 73.68% of respondents working a maximum of 20 years (p = 0.023). Mainly according to 90.00% of physicians with specialty in internal medicine and 92.59% of physicians of the group “Others” (p = 0.012), PC should be implemented in pharmacies. Women more frequently than men reckoned that appointments with a pharmacist should last up to 15 min (p = 0.012). According to 77.78% of the youngest physicians and 83.33% of the oldest ones, appointments should last from 5 to 15 min (p = 0.049), and a similar opinion was shared by 80.77% of physicians without specialty and 77.78% of physicians of the group “Others” (p = 0.0009). According to patients, the mean cost of the visit should be USD 7. Physicians most often assessed the mean cost of the appointment at USD 14. This study provides new data about implementation of PC in Poland. The increased patients’ and physicians’ willingness to benefit from this service provides pharmacists with opportunities to develop PC in community pharmacies.

Abstract
Pharmacy practice experience (PPE) aims to help trainees to become independent professional practitioners and is a prerequisite for developing skills and competence. In France, it does not exist any study that describes student satisfaction related to preregistration trainings. The aim of this study was to assess student perceptions related to the four PPE types that are planned along the course of study. A questionnaire was sent to each student. Concerning the first and second year introductory PPE, among the 8491 responses, 73% of the students stated that the length was too long regarding their actual knowledge and the objectives were not always achieved. Four thousand and eleven responses regarding third and fourth year PPE were analyzed. Sixty-two percent of the students did not deliver drugs related to the practice's subject and 57% declared doing similar task assigned during the first year PPE especially storage one's. One thousand six hundred and seven questionnaires regarding hospital practices were received. Forty-one percent of the trainees were not asked to perform task that were related to their actual knowledge. Additional comments focused on overmuch shadowing. Among the 853 responses related to the 6th year PPE, 88% of the students considered that they were overall satisfied of the training. Although 30% felt they acquired insufficient skills and professionalism and declared they were not ready to integrate the work world. Those results should prompt decision makers to modify in depth PPE programs in France in order to improve trainees' professionalism and skills acquisition. Promoting and developing researches in the field of PPE is urgently needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate Syrian pharmacy students' intentions and attitudes toward postgraduate study, and to determine and evaluate the factors that influence their preferences. METHODS A questionnaire was developed and used to collect data from final-year bachelor of pharmacy (BPharm) students at Damascus University. RESULTS Of the 265 students who responded to the survey, approximately 50% intended to work, 25% intended to pursue further study, and 25% were undecided. Personal fulfillment was the factor that most influenced students' intentions concerning future education. Men were more concerned over their financial future, while women's intentions were more influenced by scientific issues. The 3 most preferred pharmaceutical areas of further study were biochemistry and laboratory diagnosis, pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical industry, and clinical pharmacy. More students favored pursuing graduate school abroad rather than in Syria. The majority of those who intended to enroll in local graduate programs were interested in academic programs while less than a fifth favored residency programs. CONCLUSIONS The graduate programs in Syria do not appear to satisfy pharmacy students' ambitions or have the capacity to accommodate the growing demand associated with the rapid increase in the number of pharmacy graduates in the country. Consequently, a majority of students prefer to pursue postgraduate study abroad.
