Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we retrospectively investigated the prognostic role of pre-treatment neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients (ESCC) treated with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the records of 338 patients with pathologically diagnosed esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that underwent concurrent chemo-radiotherapy from January 2013 to December 2017. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify prognostic factors for progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS The result showed that the thresholds for NLR and PLR were 2.47 and 136.0 by receiver operating characteristic curve. High NLR and PLR were both associated with tumor length (P < 0.05). High NLR and PLR were significantly associated with poor PFS and OS. Multivariate analyses identified NLR, PLR and TNM stage were independent risk factors for PFS and OS. CONCLUSIONS We show that the pre-treatment NLR and PLR may serve as prognostic indicators for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma treated with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy.

Abstract
In Australia, approximately 3 % of all cancers diagnosed each year are renal cancers. Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) represents 90 % of all primary renal malignancies. RCC are slow growing and often asymptomatic, thus are often found incidentally. Here we present the case of a 76-year-old male who was found to have a metastatic RCC in a para-aortic lymph node with no primary lesion. He underwent a retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy and 15 months after the surgery, has had no signs of primary tumours or metastasis. This case reports on a rare instance of metastatic RCC without an identified primary renal malignancy.

Abstract
Focused Ultrasound (FUS) has been shown to sensitize tumors outside the brain to Radiotherapy (RT) through increased ceramide-mediated apoptosis. This study investigated the effects of FUS + RT in healthy rodent brains and F98 gliomas. Tumors, or striata in healthy rats, were targeted with microbubble-mediated, pulsed FUS (220 kHz, 102-444 kPa), followed by RT (4, 8, 15 Gy). FUS + RT (8, 15 Gy) resulted in ablative lesions, not observed with FUS or RT only, in healthy tissue. Lesions were visible using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) within 72 h and persisted until 21 days post-treatment, indicating potential applications in ablative neurosurgery. In F98 tumors, at 8 and 15 Gy, where RT only had significant effects, FUS + RT offered limited improvements. At 4 Gy, where RT had limited effects compared with untreated controls, FUS + RT reduced tumor volumes observed on MRI by 45-57%. However, survival benefits were minimal (controls: 27 days, RT: 27 days, FUS + RT: 28 days). Histological analyses of tumors 72 h after FUS + RT (4 Gy) showed 93% and 396% increases in apoptosis, and 320% and 336% increases in vessel-associated ceramide, compared to FUS and RT only. Preliminary evidence shows that FUS + RT may improve treatment of glioma, but additional studies are required to optimize effect size.

Abstract
In the era of immunotherapy, identifying biomarkers of immune system activation has become a high-priority challenge. The blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been largely investigated as a biomarker in several cancer types. NLR values have been shown to mirror the tumor-induced inflammatory status and have been demonstrated to be a reliable prognostic tool across stages of disease and therapeutic approaches. When integrated with other biomarkers of response to immunotherapy, such as PD-L1, tumor mutational burden, and tumor-associated immune cells, the NLR may allow to further stratify patients with different likelihoods of deriving a significant clinical benefit. However, despite its accessibility, low cost, and easy interpretation, the NLR is still poorly used as a prognostic tool in daily clinical practice. In this review, we analyze the role of the NLR in defining the relationship between cancer and the immune system, its usefulness in daily clinical practice, and its relationship with other established or emerging biomarkers of immunotherapy outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To obtain annual incidence trends, understand clinicopathological characteristics, and forecast the future burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Indonesia. DESIGN 11-year retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING A national referral hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. PARTICIPANTS Data from 1584 eligible cases were recorded for trends and forecasting analyses; 433 samples were analysed to determine clinicopathological differences between young (<50 years) and old (≥50 years) patients. METHODS Trend analyses were done using Joinpoint software, expressed in annual percentage change (APC), and a regression analysis was executed to generate a forecasting model. Patients' characteristics were compared using χ2 or non-parametric tests. MAIN OUTCOMES Analysis of trends, forecasting model, and clinicopathological features between the age groups. RESULTS A significant increase in APC was observed among old patients (+2.38%) for CRC cases. Colon cancer increased remarkably (+9.24%) among young patients; rectal cancer trends were either stable or declining. The trend for right-sided CRC increased in the general population (+6.52%) and old patients (+6.57%), while the trend for left-sided CRC was stable. These cases are expected to be a significant health burden within the next 10 years. Patients had a mean age of 53.17±13.94, 38.1% were young, and the sex ratio was 1.21. Prominent characteristics were left-sided CRC, tumour size ≥5 cm, exophytic growth, adenocarcinoma, histologically low grade, pT3, pN0, inadequately dissected lymph nodes (LNs), LN ratio <0.05, no distant metastasis, early-stage cancer, no lymphovascular invasion, and no perineural invasion (PNI). Distinct features between young and old patients were found in the histological subtype, number of dissected LN, and PNI of the tumour. CONCLUSIONS Epidemiological trends and forecasting analyses of CRC cases in Indonesian patients showed an enormous increase in colon cancer in young patients, a particularly concerning trend. Additionally, young patients exhibited particular clinicopathological characteristics that contributed to disease severity.

Abstract
This study aims to determine the risk factors of recurrence beyond Milan criteria in patients with transplantable early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after the first Radiofrequency ablation (RFA). 95 patients with newly diagnosed transplantable small HCC with single ≤ 3 cm were analyzed retrospectively. During the 39-month median follow-up period, 12 (21.8%) patients with HCC < 2 cm and 22 (56.4%) patients with HCC ≥ 2 cm relapsed beyond Milan criteria (p = 0.001). The 1- and 3-year recurrence rates beyond Milan criteria were 6.3% and 14.7% in HCC < 2 cm group, compared with 24.1% and 55.6% in HCC ≥ 2 cm group(p < 0.0001).HCC ≥ 2 cm, red blood cell distribution width-to-lymphocyte ratio (RLR) ≥ 18.3, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) > 15 ng/ml and early recurrence after RFA were independent predictors of recurrence exceeding Milan criteria. For patients with transplantable early single small HCC whose tumor diameter ≥ 2cm and have higher RLR and AFP levels before first RFA and early recurrence after RFA (recurrence within 2 years), close follow-up and early liver transplantation should be initiated to obtain the best survival benefit.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on recurrence and survival in patients with Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing surgery. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the 80 resectable ESCC patients who underwent surgery at Yuzuncu Yil University Faculty of Medicine between 2008 and 2018. Receiver operator characteristics curve of NLR was plotted for disease-free survival (DFS). The area under the curve of NLR was 0.692 (p=0.008) with 65.2% sensitivity and 2.8 with 69.5% specificity. Patients were divided into two groups based on the NLR as follows: NLR <2.8 and NLR ≥2.8. RESULTS: Among 80 ESCC patients, 54 (65.5%) were female. The median age was 55 years (range, 26–77). The NLR was <2.8 in 47 (58.7%) patients. Median DFS was 55 months in patients with NLR ≥2.8, whereas it was not reached in those with NLR <2.8 (p=0.008), with corresponding overall survival (OS) durations of 71 months and not reached (p=0.027). Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance score 2, presence of obstruction at diagnosis, lower 1/3 esophageal localization, neoadjuvant treatment, and NLR ≥2.8 were found to be the factors related to survival. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that high pre-treatment NLR was associated with worse DFS and OS in patients with resectable esophageal cancer. We believe that pre-treatment NLR may help guide predicting treatment outcomes in non-metastatic resectable ESCC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glomus tumor is an uncommon soft tissue tumor. However, as the tumor causes significant disability, its early diagnosis is essential. It involves subungual areas of fingers and toes in most cases, and its extra-digital involvement is rarely seen. To the best of the authors' knowledge, only a few chest wall involvement cases have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION In this paper, we describe a 63-year-old patient with a chest wall glomus tumor presenting with axillary paroxysmal pain and limitation in his shoulder range of motion that had been missed for nearly 15 years. His symptoms were relieved immediately following surgical excision. CONCLUSION Glomus tumors may involve any part of the human body. It is curable with surgical excision in most cases. Therefore, a correct early diagnosis has paramount importance. A high index of suspicion is needed for early diagnosis, especially when the tumor involves uncommon anatomic areas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the prognostic value of pre-procedure neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and construct a nomogram to predict disease-free survival (DFS) in patients receiving radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within Milan criteria. METHODS The data of 515 patients of HCC within Milan criteria receiving RFA were retrospectively collected. The patients were divided into two groups: the training group (n = 382) and the validation group (n = 133). Several preprocedural variables were analyzed in the two groups to determine the prognostic factors. RESULTS The median DFS time of the training and validation group was 28.4 months and 24.5 months, respectively. Multivariate analyses showed that number of lesions, alpha-feto protein levels, NLR and PLR were independent risk factors of DFS. According to the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve (t-ROC), the optimal cutoff value of the NLR and PLR was 1.55 and 75.30, respectively, with sensitivity of 0.737 and 0.648 and specificity of 0.541 and 0.508, respectively. The area under curve (AUC) of the t-ROC curves for the NLR was 0.662 and PLR was 0.597. The DFS was significantly higher in the NLR ≤ 1.55 group compared to NLR > 1.55 group and the PLR ≤ 75.30 group compared to PLR > 75.30 group in both training and validation datasets. Nomogram was developed based on the prognostic factors indicated by the Cox regression to predict 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-year DFS probabilities. CONCLUSIONS The cutoff value of the NLR and PLR was 1.55 and 75.30. This new nomogram based on NLR and PLR may provide good and individualized prediction of recurrence for HCC patients within Milan criteria after RFA.

Abstract
A 64-year-old man presented with reduced vision in the right eye (visual acuity of 6/24 Snellen). The patient reported having a chronic cough and recent weight loss with difficulty in swallowing and abnormal liver function test 8 months prior to his presentation. He was a chronic smoker for 45 years, having quit a year earlier. Fundus examination showed a unifocal large yellow-brown subretinal mass involving the posterior segment of the eye and associated with subretinal fluid. The patient was diagnosed with a choroidal metastasis and was referred urgently to the oncology team who confirmed the presence of non-small cell lung cancer with distant metastases. He started treatment with alectinib (second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor). A few weeks later, his vision improved and, on examination, there was complete resolution of the choroidal mass and the associated subretinal fluid. Alectinib led to rapid resolution of his choroidal secondary and has excellent ocular safety profile.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We initially aimed to investigate pre/post-treatment inflammatory biomarkers (pre/post-IBs) and their dynamic changes (delta-IBs) on the short-term outcome (STO) of radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Furthermore, a nomogram was built to provide an accurate prediction of STO. METHODS The STO using the treatment response evaluation was assessed according to RECIST 1.1 at 1 month after radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. The IBs (absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC), neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte (PLR), and lymphocyte/monocyte (LMR)) and clinical variables were collected and analyzed from 398 ESCC patients at Shandong Cancer Hospital between 2015 and 2019. The nomogram was then established for predicting STO. RESULTS Pre-ALC and pre-LMR significantly increased, pre-NLR and pre-PLR significantly decreased during radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy (all P < 0.001). Meanwhile, there was a positive correlation between delta-NLR as well as delta-PLR (r = 0.621) and delta-LMR (r = 0.613), whereas a negatively correlated between delta-LMR and delta-PLR (r = -0.573). Multivariate analysis indicated that gender [OR, 0.473; 95%CI, 0.274-0.816; P = 0.007], pre-ALC [OR, 0.554; 95%CI, 0.335-0.915; P = 0.021], pre-NLR [OR, 3.176; 95%CI, 1.733-5.823; P < 0.001], post-NLR [OR, 2.418; 95%CI, 1.271-4.600; P = 0.007] and delta-NLR [OR, 1.929; 95%CI, 1.035-3.595; P = 0.039] were statistically significant with STO. And c-index of the nomogram established by combining all independent predictors for STO was 0.770 [95%CI, 0.719-0.820]. CONCLUSION Pre-NLR, pre-ALC, post-NLR, and delta-NLR were significant with STO in ESCC patients treated with radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Further, pre-NLR had the best predictive value, and the developed nomogram with superior prediction ability for STO could assist in patients counseling and guide to make individual treatments.

Abstract
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the leading cancer affecting humans; however, the relationship between tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and patient prognosis in RCC is relatively unreported. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among factors (TIL, clinicopathological characteristics, and patient prognosis in RCC).This retrospective study evaluated 533 patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) deposited in the the Cancer Genome Atlas between 2004 and 2015. We downloaded immune cell type absolute fraction data for ccRCC patients from the Cancer Immunome Atlas database. The CIBERSORT method was used to transform RNA-sequencing data into microarray data for the cancer genome atlas -ccRCC samples for which microarray and RNA-sequencing data were available on the the Cancer Immunome Atlas website.The overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) analyses of ccRCC patients showed that M1 macrophages (OS, P = .00000134; DFS, P = .00958) and neutrophils (OS, P = .00000723; DFS, P = .0255) were significant. Age at diagnosis (P < .0001, c-index = 0.59), tumour stage (P < .0001, c-index = 0.667), stage (P < .0001, c-index = 0.729), neoplasm histological grade (P < .0001, c-index = 0.624), and haemoglobin level (P < .0001, c-index = 0.583) were independent predictors of OS. Similarly, the stage, haemoglobin level, and serum calcium level were independent predictors of DFS. There were significant correlations between the M1 macrophage fraction and tumour stage, stage, and neoplasm histological grade. Stage and neoplasm histological grade showed associations with the neutrophil fraction.The correlations between TILs and prognosis and clinicopathological characteristics in ccRCC were demonstrated. The prognosis of ccRCC patients may differ according to the TIL fractions.

Abstract
Background We conducted this study to combine the mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) to establish a strong predictive model for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) after concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Methods We retrospectively analyzed 163 newly diagnosed ESCC patients treated with CCRT. Eighty patients (training set) were randomly selected to generate cut-off SUVmean and NLR values by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and to establish a predictive model by using the independent predictors of treatment outcomes. Then, we evaluated the performance of the prediction model regarding treatment outcomes in the testing set (n = 83) and in all sets. Results A high SUVmean (> 5.81) and high NLR (> 2.42) at diagnosis were associated with unfavorable treatment outcomes in patients with ESCC. The prediction model had a better performance than the simple parameters (p < 0.05). With a cut-off value of 0.77, the prediction model significantly improved the specificity and positive predictive value for treatment response (88.9 and 92.1% in the training set, 95.8 and 97.1% in the testing set, and 92.2 and 91.8% in all sets, respectively). Conclusions The pretreatment SUVmean and NLR were independent predictors of treatment response in ESCC patients treated with CCRT. The predictive model was constructed based on these two parameters and provides a highly accurate tool for predicting patient outcomes.

Abstract
Background It is widely accepted that the pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an independent predictor of prognosis in multiple malignancies, including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, its predictive value in middle thoracic esophageal carcinoma is still unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the preoperative serum levels of NLR in middle thoracic esophageal carcinoma patients to clarify their clinical significance as predictors of prognosis. Methods This study investigated 556 patients with middle thoracic ESCC treated by esophagectomy from January 2010 to December 2012. The prognostic impact of serum NLR level was analyzed. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to identify the NLR for predicting survival. Correlation between the NLR and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed by χ2 test. Prognostic influence was calculated by using the Kaplan-Meier method and the difference was compared by log-rank test. Cox regression analysis was performed to evaluate the significant prognostic factors. Results The cutoff value for the NLR was 2.43 ng/mL, the area under the curve was 0.553 (95% CI: 0.504–0.601; P=0.035), and the sensitivity and specificity were 53.3% and 58.7% respectively. It is demonstrated that preoperative NLR (P=0.003), T stage (P<0.001), N stage (P<0.001), surgical approach (P=0.004), and gender (P=0.008) were independent prognostic factors in middle thoracic ESCC by univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed that preoperative NLR (P=0.036), T stage (P=0.004), N stage (P<0.001), surgical approach (P=0.002), and age (P=0.019) were independent prognostic factors for survival. Conclusions Pretreatment NLR >2.43 ng/mL could serve as an indicator of poor prognosis in middle thoracic ESCC patients after surgical treatment.

Abstract
Objective The impact of negative lymph nodes (NLNs) count on prognosis in esophageal cancer (EC) was analyzed using two institutions surgical database. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of 768 EC patients treated by surgical resection between January 2010 and December 2012. The effects of the NLNs count on prognosis was analyzed. Cox regression model was conducted to determine the significant prognostic elements. Results The number of NLNs was studied as a categorical variable based on the quartiles (Q1: ≤15, Q2: 16–21, Q3: 22–30, Q4: ≥31). And a better overall survival (OS) was observed with increasing number of NLNs (HR= 0.762; 95% CI, 0.596–0.974 for Q2, HR= 0.666; 95% CI, 0.516–0.860 for Q3 and HR= 0.588; 95% CI, 0.450–0.768 for Q4) (all P<0.05). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that the NLNs count was an independent prognostic factor. Besides, for patients in T2 or T3 stage, a high number of NLNs was found to be significantly associated with a favorable OS (log rank P<0.001). Conclusion A higher number of NLNs is independently related to the better OS in EC patients after surgical resection.

Abstract
A high preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been shown in several studies as a predictor of worse survival in many solid neoplasms, including esophageal cancer, but its impact remains unclear. The goal of this systematic review was to gain all the evidence about NLR in order to analyse its potential in predicting survival in esophageal cancer. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature search of all relevant studies reporting data on NLR as prognostic marker in esophageal cancer patients. We considered overall survival (OS) as primary outcome, disease-free survival (DFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) as secondary outcomes. We included studies with a directly or indirectly available hazard ratio (HR), furthermore we used both fixed effect model and random effect model depending on heterogeneity. We included a total of 20 studies, published between 2011 and 2017, consisting of 6,457 patients. The NLR cut-off value ranges from 1.7 to 5. The HR for OS of all included studies was 1.60. The HR for DFS and PFS was 1.75 and 1.66 respectively. The survival sub-analysis about tumor characteristics, treatment modality, blood sample timing also confirmed NLR prognostic relevance with statistically significant results. The meta-analysis showed that high preoperative NLR is associated with worse survival in esophageal cancer, as shown in several solid tumors, but its use in the clinical practice is still underestimated. High-quality studies are needed to assess the most effective cut-off in survival prognostication and NLR relevance on postoperative complications.

Abstract
The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been reported to be a prognostic marker in prostate cancer. In this study, we assessed the association between preoperative NLR and the clinicopathological characteristics, biomolecular features and prognosis of patients with localized prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy. A total of 994 subjects were retrospectively enrolled, and the histological specimens of 210 patients were retrieved for constructing a tissue microarray. Immunohistochemistry was then performed to assess the expression of AR, ERG, PTEN, p-AKT, Bcl-2, Beclin-1, Ki-67, CD3, CD4, CD8, IFN-γ and TNF-α. No significant differences in the NLR distributions among clinicopathological variables were observed (P > 0.05) when the original NLR data were utilized. When we dichotomized the NLR value into the high-NLR group (NLR ≥ 2) and low-NLR group (NLR < 2), we found that the patients in the high-NLR group had more prostate capsule invasion (P = 0.047). Additionally, no significant correlation was found between the NLR and infiltrating CD3+ cells, the CD4/CD8 ratio, AR, ERG, PTEN, p-AKT, Bcl-2, Beclin-1, Ki-67, IFN-γ or TNF-α (P > 0.05). When we analyzed the data of patients without postoperative adjuvant hormone therapy or radiotherapy, univariate and multivariate survival analysis indicated that a high NLR was a predictor of better BCR-free survival (P < 0.05). When analyzing the entire cohort, univariate survival analysis showed that the high-NLR group had significantly poorer overall survival (P < 0.05). In conclusion, NLR cannot reflect prostate cancer characteristics or the local immune microenvironment, but a high NLR can serve as an independent predictor of better BCR.

Prognostic Importance of Controlling Nutritional Status in Patients Undergoing Curative Thoracoscopic Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer. Am J Ther 2019; 25:e524-e532. Abstract
It is now clear that cancer survival is determined not only by tumor pathology but also by host-related factors, in particular, nutritional status and systemic inflammation. It is desirable that the essential properties of any scale designed or intended to be used for the prediction of survival are simple, convenient, and objective. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the database of patients who underwent curative surgery for esophageal cancer in our department to evaluate controlling nutritional status (CONUT) and neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as predictors of cancer-specific survival (CSS) after esophagectomy. We retrospectively reviewed the database of 148 consecutive patients who underwent potentially curative surgery for histologically verified esophageal squamous cell carcinoma at our institute between January 2002 and December 2014. CONUT and NLR were calculated. On multivariate analysis, pTNM stage (P < 0.0001) and CONUT (P = 0.0291) were independently associated with worse prognosis. Multivariate analysis evaluated the prognostic factors in 2 different patient groups: patients younger than 70 years (nonelderly) and those aged 70 years or more (elderly). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that pTNM stage (P = 0.0083) and CONUT (P = 0.0138) were the independent risk factors for a worse prognosis among the nonelderly group, whereas univariate analysis demonstrated that pTNM stage (P = 0.0002) was the only independent risk factor for a worse prognosis among the elderly group. CONUT was a significant predictor of CSS in patients with esophageal cancer in this study. However, pTNM stage remained a significantly more powerful predictor of CSS. Therefore, the results of this study suggested that CONUT and pTNM stage are the significant and complementary factors predicting survival in patients with esophageal cancer. But, this study failed to confirm the NLR as a significant predictor of CSS after resection for esophageal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carcinogenesis and tumor growth are associated with chronic inflammation and the host immune system. Here, we investigated the clinical significance and relationship between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and hematologic parameters in patients with breast cancer. METHODS Invasive ductal breast cancer patients (N = 145) who underwent surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Samples were obtained using a core needle biopsy for CD8+, FOXP3+ TIL assessment. Blood lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and platelets were obtained by peripheral venous punctures. RESULTS CD8 + TILs were significantly associated with absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) and the absolute monocyte count (AMC). Low LMR (ALC/AMC) (cut-off - 5.3, range = 0.73-12.31) was associated with poor overall survival (OS) (p = 0.010), disease-free survival (DFS) (p = 0.005). However, in subgroup analysis, LMR did not have any value as a prognostic factor in HER2-positive breast cancers. TILs had different prognostic impacts across breast cancer subtypes, although they were not statistically significant. The treatment response after NAC tended to improve in breast cancer patients with high FOXP3+ TILs, low NLR (neutrophil count/ALC) (FOXP3 p for trend = 0.006, NLR p for trend = 0.063). CONCLUSIONS A relevance between TILs and hematologic parameters in breast cancer was demonstrated. The influence of the immune system on breast cancer progression may differ by subtype.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic values of Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) and hematologic inflammation markers in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) receiving curative esophagectomy. Materials and methods A total of 277 patients with ESCC treated with standard curative esophagectomy were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were grouped for further analysis according to the systemic inflammation score (SIS), the combination of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (CNP) score and NRS-2002 score. The Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test were adopted to calculate and compare the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates with these parameters. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to carry out univariate and multivariate analyses. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to verify the accuracy of SIS, CNP and NRS-2002 for survival prediction. Results In univariate analysis, the following factors were significantly associated with poor PFS and OS: sex, T stage, N stage, TNM stage, SIS, CNP and NRS-2002 (all P<0.05). Furthermore, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that CNP (hazard ratio [HR]=1.602; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.341–1.913; P=0.000), NRS-2002 (HR=2.062; 95% CI 1.523–2.792; P=0.000) and TNM stage (HR=1.194; 95% CI 1.058–1.565; P=0.048) were independent prognostic factors for PFS. Correspondingly, CNP (HR=1.707; 95% CI 1.405–2.074; P=0.000), NRS-2002 (HR=2.716; 95% CI 1.972–3.740; P=0.000) and TNM stage (HR=1.363; 95% CI 1.086–1.691; P=0.036) were also independent prognostic factors for OS. Finally, the results of ROC curves indicated that CNP and NRS-2002 were superior to SIS as a predictive factor for PFS or OS in patients with ESCC receiving surgery. Conclusion This study demonstrated that CNP combined with NRS-2002 is promising as a predictive marker for predicting clinical outcomes in patients with ESCC receiving surgery.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the association between the nutritional and the inflammatory statuses of patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract undergoing surgical resection and to identify predictors of mortality in these patients. Methods: we conducted a prospective study of 41 patients with gastrointestinal tract cancer submitted to surgery between October 2012 and December 2014. We evaluated the nutritional status by subjective and objective methods. We assessed the inflammatory response and prognosis using the modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS), Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Onodera Prognostic Nutritional Index (mPNI), Inflammatory-Nutritional Index (INI) and C-Reactive Protein/Albumin ratio (mPINI). Results: half of the patients were malnourished and 27% were at nutritional risk. There was a positive association between the percentage of weight loss (%WL) and the markers NLR (p=0.047), mPINI (p=0.014) and INI (p=0.015). Serum albumin levels (p=0.015), INI (p=0.026) and mPINI (p=0.026) were significantly associated with the PG-SGA categories. On multivariate analysis, albumin was the only inflammatory marker independently related to death (p=0.004). Conclusion: inflammatory markers were significantly associated with malnutrition, demonstrating that the higher the inflammatory response, the worse the PG-SGA (B and C) scores and the higher the %WL in these patients. However, further studies aimed at improving surgical outcomes and determining the role of these markers as predictors of mortality are required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Surgical interventions for oesophagogastric cancer carry a significant burden of morbidity and mortality. A range of inflammation based prognostic scores have been proposed in an attempt to predict outcome. This study evaluated five such prognostic scores in oesophageal and gastric carcinoma patients. METHODS The modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS), Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), Prognostic Index (PI), and Prognostic Nutrition Index (PNI) were calculated for 723 consecutive patients undergoing oesophagectomy or gastrectomy at a single center. The predictive accuracy of each score was assessed using ROC curves and survival analyses. RESULTS Overall, only PLR and PNI were significantly predictive of patient survival (both P < 0.001), with no significant association detected for mGPS (P = 0.480), NLR (P = 0.210), or PI (P = 0.808). Subgroup analysis found the predictive accuracy of PNI to be significantly greater in oesophagectomy than gastrectomy patients (hazard ratio 2.75 vs 1.39, P = 0.016) and mGPS to be predictive of patient survival only in oesophagectomies (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Inflammation based prognostic scores may have a role in patients undergoing resection for oesophageal and gastric cancer. These scores are easily calculable from routinely collected data and could be used as an adjunct to existing staging modalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The role of inflammation in cancer development is a well-known phenomenon that may be represented by the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). The present research intends to determine the impact of NLR on the survival outcome of patients with gastric cancer (GC), and to evaluate its use as a stratification factor for the staging groups. METHODS Data regarding clinical characteristics, surgery, pathology, and follow-up were retrospectively collected from our single-center prospective database. Blood samples were obtained before surgery. RESULTS A total of 383 patients (231 males) who underwent gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy were evaluated between 2009 and 2016. NLR established cutoff was 2.44, and patients were divided in NLR ≥2.44 (hNLR) and <2.44 (lNLR). hNLR patients (38.4% of the cases) had lower disease-free survival and overall survival (OS) compared to lNLR patients (P = 0.047 and P = 0.045, respectively). Risk stratification according to NLR value was done in same tumor depth (T4 and <T4), stage (III and <III) and lymph node status (N+ and N-) group of patients. The OS was significantly lower when NLR was high in same tumor depth (P = 0.032) and stage (P = 0.020), but not in same lymph node status patients (P = 0.184). In a multivariate analysis, NLR was an independent factor of worse OS (HR 1.50 95%CI 1.27-4.21, P = 0.048). CONCLUSION A high NLR was an independent risk factor for reduced survival in GC patients submitted to potentially curative resection. Calculating NLR is easily reproducible and may be incorporated in pre-operative evaluation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this work was to evaluate the prognostic role of pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in recipients of definitive chemoradiotherapy (ChRT) for cervical cancer. METHODS In 235 patients given definitive ChRT for histologically confirmed cervical cancer, clinical data and pretreatment complete blood cell counts were analyzed. Prognostic and therapeutic ramifications of NLR and PLR were assessed. RESULTS Median pretreatment NLR and PLR were 3.03 (range, 1.04-13.03) and 133.02 (range, 36.3-518.16), respectively. Both NLR and PLR correlated significantly with tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and treatment response. In addition to NLR and PLR, tumor stage, size, and nodal metastasis were identified by univariate analysis as significant predictors of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). By multivariate analysis, independent predictors of OS and PFS were NLR (OS: hazard ratio [HR], 3.322; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.905-5.790; PFS: HR, 3.579; 95% CI, 2.106-6.082; both P < 0.001) and lymph node metastasis (OS: HR, 2.620; 95% CI, 1.706-4.023; PFS: HR, 2.989; 95% CI, 1.918-4.378; both P < 0.001), although patients' age (HR, 1.019; 95% CI, 1.003-1.035; P = 0.02) was also significantly predictive of OS. CONCLUSIONS Pretreatment NLR and PLR were associated with larger tumors, lymph node metastasis, and poorer therapeutic responses to definitive ChRT. By multivariate analysis, pretreatment NLR and lymph node metastasis were found independently predictive of OS and PFS, whereas patients' age was significantly predictive of OS only. In patients with advanced cervical cancer, NLR is a potential biomarker, serving to guide systemic therapy and predict treatment outcomes.

Abstract
AIMS To propectively reveal the clinicopathological and prognostic significances of monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in resected patients with non-metastatic Siewert type II/III adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction (AEG). METHODS A total of 611 patients diagnosed with Siewert type II/III AEG and undergoing surgery between 2006 and 2011 were prospectively followed-up until April 2016. Associations between preoperative peripheral MLR, NLR, and PLR and clinicopathological parameters were quantified using the multivariate Logistic regression model with adjustment. The correlation between the 3 ratios and cancer-specific survival (CSS) was investigated using the univariate and adjusted multivariate Cox regression models with stratifications. The periodical survival rates for the low- and high-level arms were obtained using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS We set the medians (0.223, 2.22, and 124.4) as the cut-off values of preoperative MLR, NLR, and PLR, respectively. MLR was higher in male patients and those > 63 years; PLR was higher in patients with type II tumors. The (marginally-)significantly inverse ratio-CSS association was detected in male patients, those ≤ 63 years, those with type III tumors, and those with pTNM stage III tumors for MLR, and in female patients, those > 63 years, those with type III tumors, those with vessel invasion, and those with stage III tumors for NLR, but was generally negative concerning PLR. The association majorly existed in type III and pTNM stage III tumors. CONCLUSION MLR and NLR might be prognostic factors for patients with non-metastatic Siewert type II/III AEG, while PLR had limited significance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is increasing evidence that systemic inflammation influences the prognosis in patients with malignant tumors. The aim of this research was to investigate the prognostic value of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with primary small-cell carcinoma of the esophagus. METHODS This study retrospectively analyzed 129 patients with primary small-cell carcinoma of the esophagus who underwent esophagectomy in The Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University between January 2008 and December 2010. NLRs were calculated by using the following formula: peripheral neutrophil count/lymphocyte count (109/L). Correlations of NLR with other clinicopathologic data and prognosis were analyzed. The survival rate was calculated by Kaplan-Meier analysis. The differences between groups were compared by using the log-rank test. Cox regression was used to analyze the factors that may affect the survival of the patients. RESULTS The survival rate was found to be related to tumor stage, tumor location, nodal metastasis, TNM stage, histology, adjuvant therapy, and NLR (all P<0.05). High-NLR group had significantly poorer survival than low-NLR group (1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates: 46.6% vs 57.1%, 21.9% vs 50.0%, and 5.5% vs 23.2%, respectively, P=0.002). NLR was identified as an independent prognostic factor for patients with primary small-cell carcinoma of the esophagus. CONCLUSION NLR is a valuable clinical marker in preoperative estimation as well as prognosis prediction for patients with primary small-cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

Abstract
Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) had been analysed in many kind of tumours, but its role of predict the oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients' prognosis was not reach a consensus. Relationship between NLR, PLR and ESCC located in the middle or lower segment was evaluated. 317 patients with ESCC who underwent attempted curative oesophagectomy were analysed in this study. 157 and 98 patients had elevated NLR and PLR respectively (NLR >3.3 and PLR >150). The median overall survival time (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was 34.1 and 19.2 months respectively. Multivariate analysis found PLR >150 (P = 0.018, HR 1.426, 95%CI 1.063-1.912) accompanied by male, lymphatic metastases, tumour size more than 3 cm, tumour located at middle segment and poor differentiation were associated with significantly worse DFS. Meanwhile, gender, lymphatic metastases, tumour location and differentiation along with PLR >150 (P = 0.003, HR 1.595, 95% CI 1.172-2.170) and NLR>3.3 (P = 0.039, HR 1.367, 95% CI 1.015-1.840) were all independent prognostic factors for OS. Preoperative NLR and PLR might be used as predictive factors in patients with ESCC. For DFS, elevated PLR compared to NLR may have an advantage to indicate poor prognosis.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the prognostic role of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).A total of 298 ESCC patients were enrolled in the current retrospective study. The SII was calculated by the formula: neutrophil × platelet/lymphocyte. The optimal cut-off value was calculated by the Cutoff Finder. Univariate and multivariate analyses were evaluated for cancer-specific survival (CSS). Additional, we also established a nomogram model to predict the prognosis for patients with ESCC.The optimal cut-off value was 410 × 10/L for SII. Patients with SII ≤ 410 (×10/L) had a significantly better 5-year CSS than patients with SII > 410 (×10/L) (51.9% vs 24.0%, P < 0.001). Multivariate analyses revealed that SII was a significant independent predictive indicator (P = 0.027). A nomogram could be more accuracy for CSS for patients with ESCC (c-index: 0.68).The SII is a useful independent prognostic indicator for patients with resectable ESCC.

Abstract
Background Body mass index (BMI), resting energy expenditure (REE) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) are major preoperative assessments of patients’ nutrition and metabolic state. The relations and effects of these indices on esophageal cancer patients’ postoperative short-term and long-term outcomes remain controversial and unclear. We aimed to study the impact of BMI, REE and FBG in esophageal cancer patients undergoing esophagectomy. Methods Three hundred and six esophageal cancer patients who underwent esophagectomy were observed retrospectively. Clinical characteristics, postoperative complications and survival analysis were compared among different BMI, REE and FBG groups. Results There were significant linear relationships between REE, BMI and FBG indices, patients with low BMI tended to have low REE (p < 0.001) and low FBG (p = 0.003). No significant difference was found in case of mortality and postoperative complications among different groups. Low BMI (X2 = 6.141, p = 0.046), REE (X2 = 6.630, p = 0.010) and FBG (X2 = 5.379, p = 0.020) were related to poor survival. FBG ≤90 mg/dL was independently associated with poor survival (HR = 0.695; 95 % CI 0.489–0.987, p = 0.042). BMI and REE came to be stronger prognostic factors on lymph node-negative patients and proved to be independent prognostic indicators (HR = 0.540; 95 % CI 0.304–0.959, p = 0.035 and HR = 0.457; 95 % CI 0.216–0.967, p = 0.041, respectively). Conclusions BMI, REE and FBG are important prognostic factors in patients with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy and preoperative evaluation of these indices help to determine the prognosis in these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score on survival compared with the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) in patients with resectable thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS One hundred eighty-five consecutive patients who underwent subtotal esophagectomy with curative intent for resectable thoracic ESCC were retrospectively reviewed. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analyses for 3-year overall survival (OS) as the endpoint were performed, and the maximal Youden indices were calculated to assess discrimination ability and to determine the appropriate cut-off values of CONUT, PLR, and NLR. The patients were then classified into high and low groups based on these cut-off values. Correlations between CONUT and other clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Prognostic factors predicting overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS The areas under the curve predicting 3-year OS were 0.603 for CONUT, 0.561 for PLR, 0.564 for NLR, and 0.563 for GPS. The optimal cut-off values were two for the CONUT score, 193 for PLR, and 3.612 for NLR. The high-CONUT group was significantly associated with lower BMI, high-PLR, high-NLR, and GPS1/2 groups. On univariate analysis, high-CONUT, high-PLR, high-NLR, and GPS 1/2 groups were significantly associated with poorer OS and RFS. Of these factors, multivariate analysis revealed that only the CONUT score was an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR 2.303, 95 % CI 1.191-4.455; p = 0.013) and RFS (HR 2.163, 95 % CI 1.139-4.109; p = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS The CONUT score was an independent predictor of OS and RFS before treatment and was superior to PLR, NLR, and GPS in terms of predictive ability for prognosis in patients with resectable thoracic ESCC.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio, and preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell cancer. We analyzed retrospectively locally advanced esophageal squamous cell cancer patients who had received neoadjuvant chemotherapy before undergoing a radical esophagectomy between 2009 and 2012. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio before chemotherapy and before the surgery were calculated. Univariate analyses showed that prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio >5 (P = 0.048, hazard ratio = 2.86; 95% confidence interval: 1.01-8.12) and prechemotherapy platelet to lymphocyte ratio >130 (P = 0.025, hazard ratio = 5.50; 95% confidence interval: 1.23-24.55) were associated significantly with overall survival (OS), and prechemotherapy platelet to lymphocyte ratio >130 (P = 0.026, hazard ratio = 3.18; 95% confidence interval: 1.15-8.85) was associated significantly with progression-free survival. However, only prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio >5 (P = 0.024, hazard ratio = 3.50; 95% confidence interval: 1.18-10.40) remained significantly associated with OS in multivariate analyses. Neither preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio nor platelet to lymphocyte ratio was associated with OS or progression-free survival. The prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio >5 to preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio ≤5 group showed significantly worse OS than the prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio ≤5 to preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio ≤5 group (P = 0.050). The prechemotherapy platelet to lymphocyte ratio >130 to preoperative platelet to lymphocyte ratio ≤130 group (P = 0.016) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio >130 to preoperative platelet to lymphocyte ratio >130 group (P = 0.042) showed significantly worse OS than the prechemotherapy platelet to lymphocyte ratio ≤30 to preoperative platelet to lymphocyte ratio ≤130 group. In conclusions, prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio is an independent prognostic factor for OS in patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and, as an adverse prognostic predictor, increased prechemotherapy neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio is superior to platelet to lymphocyte ratio. Maintaining a low neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio throughout treatment is a predictor of better OS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lymph node (LN) metastasis is widely accepted as a poor prognosis indicator in patients with gastric cancer. An accurate preoperative prediction of LN status is of crucial importance for the planning treatment. The aim of the present study was to assess the predictive value of the preoperative platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) and neutrophil/lymphocyte rates (NLR) on the LN metastasis in gastric cancer patients and to develop a new preoperative score system to predict LN metastasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 492 operable patients with gastric cancer were enrolled in our study. The clinical utility of the PLR and NLR was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The logistic analysis was used to identify the independent parameters associated with LN metastasis. Then, a score system including those independent parameters that can be detected preoperatively was established, which was also tested by an ROC curve. RESULTS The ideal cutoff values for predicting LN metastasis were 1.59 for NLR and 155.67 for PLR according to the ROC curve. Multivariate analyses showed that both PLR and NLR are significantly associated with LN metastasis independent of depth of invasion, lymphatic invasion, macroscopic type, and tumor size. The area under the ROC curve of the score system was 0.830 (95% confidence interval 0.782-0.878), showing a reliable ability to evaluate the status of nodal involvement. CONCLUSION Preoperative PLR and NLR are useful biomarkers to predict LN metastasis and the score system in our study may serve as a reliable instrument to predict LN metastasis in gastric cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays a key role in cancer. In the current study, we proposed a novel inflammation-based stage, named I stage, for patients with resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS Three hundred and twenty-three patients with resectable ESCC were enrolled in the current study. The I stage was calculated as follows: patients with high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (>10 mg/L), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (>3.5), and platelet-count-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (>150) were defined as I3. Patients with two, one, or no abnormal value were defined as I2, I1, or I0, respectively. The prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS There were 112 patients for I0, 97 patients for I1, 66 patients for I2, and 48 patients for I3, respectively. The 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with I0, I1, I2, and I3 was 50.0%, 30.9%, 18.2%, and 8.3%, respectively (I0 versus I1, P = 0.002; I1 versus I2, P = 0.012; I2 versus I3, P = 0.020). Multivariate analyses revealed that I stage was an independent prognostic factor in patients with resectable ESCC (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The inflammation-based stage (I stage) is a novel and useful predictive factor for CSS in patients with resectable ESCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown that the presence of systemic inflammation and platelet status correlate with poor survival in various cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the preoperative platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) undergoing surgery. METHODS In this study, 306 patients with OSCC who had surgery were enrolled. The optimal cutoff value of PLR and NLR was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The prognostic significance of both markers was determined by uni- and multivariate analysis. RESULTS The results showed that high NLR and PLR were classified using a cutoff value of 2.7 and 135, respectively, based on ROC curve analysis. Only PLR was associated with decreased disease-free survival [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.237; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.401-3.571; p = 0.001] and overall survival [HR = 2.022; 95% CI: 1.266-3.228; p = 0.003] by both uni- and multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION The preoperative PLR is superior to NLR as an independent indicator in predicting disease-free survival and overall survival in patients who undergo oral cancer resection for OSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The interaction between tumor cells and inflammatory cells has not been systematically investigated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether preoperative the lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) could predict the prognosis of ESCC patients undergoing esophagectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Records from 218 patients with histologically diagnosed ESCC who underwent attempted curative surgery from January 2007 to December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. Besides clinicopathological prognostic factors, we evaluated the prognostic value of the LMR, the NLR, and the PLR using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models. RESULTS The median follow-up was 38.6 months (range 3-71 months). The cut-off values of 2.57 for the LMR, 2.60 for the NLR and 244 for the PLR were chosen as optimal to discriminate between survival and death by applying receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of patients with low preoperative LMR demonstrated a significant worse prognosis for DFS (p=0.004) and OS (p=0.002) than those with high preoperative LMR. The high NLR cohort had lower DFS (p=0.004) and OS (p=0.011). Marginally reduced DFS (p=0.068) and lower OS (p=0.039) were found in the high PLR cohort. On multivariate analysis, only preoperative LMR was an independent prognostic factor for both DFS (p=0.009, HR=1.639, 95% CI 1.129-2.381) and OS (p=0.004, HR=1.759, 95% CI 1.201-2.576) in ESCC patients. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative LMR better predicts cancer survival compared with the cellular components of systemic inflammation in patients with ESCC undergoing esophagectomy.

Abstract
Increasing evidence has suggested that the host inflammatory status is associated with prognosis of several solid tumors. Preoperative platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), both acquired from routine blood tests, can reflect the status of systematic inflammation. However, whether they are correlated with clinical outcomes of esophageal carcinoma is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the prognostic value of preoperative PLR and NLR in patients with resected esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Preoperative PLR and NLR were evaluated in 317 eligible ESCC patients from September 2008 to December 2010. Receiver operating characteristic curves were applied to establish optimal cutoff points. The prognostic values of PLR and NLR were determined by both univariate and multivariate analyses. The optimal cutoff value of preoperative PLR and NLR were 103.0 and 2.1, respectively. One hundred and ninety-seven (62.1%) patients showed high level of preoperative PLR, while 148 (46.7%) patients showed high level of preoperative NLR. Both elevated PLR (P < 0.001) and NLR (P = 0.009) were correlated with poor disease-specific survival in univariate analysis. However, only preoperative PLR (P = 0.003) had a significant correlation with prognosis in multivariate analysis. In subgroup analyses, the predictive value of PLR was significant for stage I (P = 0.008) and stage II (P = 0.044) patients, but not for stage III patients (P = 0.100). Preoperative PLR is easily obtained from a routine blood test and may provide additional prognostic information for ESCC patients, especially in the early stage.

Abstract
The pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is reportedly associated with the clinical outcomes of many cancers. However, it has not been widely investigated whether the pretreatment NLR is associated with the pathological characteristics of prostate cancer (PCa) and biochemical recurrence in PCa patients receiving radical prostatectomy (RP).In this cohort study, a total of 1688 PCa patients who had undergone RP were analyzed retrospectively, and a subset of 237 of these patients were evaluated to determine the relationship between pretreatment NLR and biochemical recurrence. Patients were divided into a high-NLR group (NLR ≥2.36) and a low-NLR group (NLR < 2.36) according to the pretreatment NLR. The association between the pretreatment NLR and pathological stage and lymph node involvement was evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Time of biochemical recurrence was determined using the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox's proportional hazard regression model was used to compare the time of biochemical recurrence between the groups.As compared with patients in the low-NLR group, those in the high-NLR group had an increased risk of pT3-4 disease (odds ratio (OR), 1.883; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.419-2.500; P < 0.001), and a 1.7-fold increased risk of lymph node involvement (OR, 1.685; 95% CI, 1.101-2.579; P = 0.016). For the subset of 237 patients, those with a high NLR showed a significantly shorter median biochemical recurrence-free survival time (51.9 months) than those with a low NLR (76.5 months; log-rank test, P = 0.019). However, multivariate analysis indicated that the NLR was not an independent predictor of biochemical recurrence (hazard ratio, 1.388; 95% CI, 0.909-2.118; P = 0.129).Our findings suggest that the pretreatment NLR may be associated with pathological stage and lymph node involvement in PCa patients receiving RP, and that PCa patients with a high NLR may have a higher rate of biochemical recurrence following RP than those with a low NLR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been assumed to be a marker to predict the survival of patients with different types of cancer. We undertook this study to verify the prognostic value of the NLR and the PLR for predicting the survival rate of patients with esophageal cancer in a high incidence area in China. METHODS In total, 820 cases from a high incidence area that had pathologically confirmed esophageal cancers initially diagnosed at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University from 2007-2008 were analyzed. The medical record system was used to collect patient information regarding personal details, cancer type, treatment, and routine blood examinations at the time of admission. Follow-up evaluations were conducted by the established follow-up system at the hospital. We used Kaplan-Meier method to calculate overall survival (OS) rate. We used Cox regression analysis to analyze the factors that may affect the OS rate of the patients. SPSS 13.0 and Excel software packages were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS In total, 864 cases were consistent with the inclusion criterion. At the end of the study, 820 cases received follow-up evaluation. Follow-up rate was 94.91%. Among the 820 cases, 334 died of esophageal cancer, whereas 486 remain alive as of March 15, 2014. Five-year OS rate of the patients with esophageal cancer was 40.66%. Patients in the NLR ≥3.5 group demonstrated shorter OS than patients in the NLR <3.5 group (53.2 vs. 33.4 months, p = 0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated that age, pathological type, TNM stage, surgery and NLR were all independent risk factors for esophageal cancer. OR of NLR ≥3.5 group was 1.287 (1.049-1.580). CONCLUSIONS NLR may be an independent prognostic factor for esophageal cancer in high incidence areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays an important role in cancer progression and prognosis. However, the prognostic values of inflammatory biomarkers in esophageal cancer (EC) were not established. In the present study, therefore, we initially used a nomogram to predict prognostic values of various inflammatory biomarkers in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS A total of 326 ESCC patients were included in this retrospective study. Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte monocyte ratio (LMR) were analyzed in the current study. Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the cancer-specific survival (CSS). Cox regression analysis was also performed to evaluate the prognostic factors. A nomogram was established to predict the prognosis for CSS. RESULTS Patients were divided into 3 groups according to GPS (GPS 0, 1 and 2) and 2 groups according to NLR (≤3.45 and >3.45), PLR (≤166.5 and >166.5) and LMR (≤2.30 and >2.30). The 5-year CSS in patients with GPS 0, 1 and 2 were 49.2%, 26.8% and 11.9%, respectively (P<0.001). In addition, patients with NLR (>3.45), PLR (>166.5) and LMR (≤2.30) were significantly associated with decreased CSS, respectively (P<0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that GPS (P<0.001), PLR (P=0.002) and LMR (P=0.002) were independent prognostic factors in patients with ESCC. In addition, a nomogram was established according to all significantly independent factors for CSS. The Harrell's c-index for CSS prediction was 0.72. CONCLUSION GPS, PLR and LMR were potential prognostic biomarkers in patients with ESCC. The nomogram based on CSS could be used as an accurately prognostic prediction for patients with ESCC.

Abstract
AIM: To determine the prognostic significance of preoperative serum neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
METHODS: Data from 371 eligible patients with ESCC who had undergone surgery with curative intent at our institution between October 2000 and May 2007 were retrospectively recruited for analysis. The cutoff value of NLR was 3.0 as determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve, which discriminated between survival and death; the area under the curve was 0.709, and the sensitivity and specificity were 66.1% and 69.1%, respectively, at the cutoff point. The correlation between the NLR and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed using a χ2 test. The prognostic influence of the NLR and other clinicopathological factors on cancer-specific survival (CSS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) was studied using the Kaplan-Meier method. To evaluate the independent prognostic value of NLR, multivariate Cox regression models were applied.
RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 57.0 years, and 276/371 (74.4%) patients were male. The NLR was ≤ 3.0 in 80.1% (297/371) of the patients, and the remaining 19.9% (74/371) had an NLR > 3.0. Median postoperative follow-up was 66.0 mo [interquartile range (IQR): 49.0-76.0 mo], with a follow-up rate of 94%. Follow-up was not significantly different between patients with an NLR ≤ and > 3.0 (63.13 ± 1.64 vs 61.52 ± 3.66, P = 0.711). However, higher preoperative serum NLR was associated with significantly increased risks of higher pathological tumor status (P = 0.007). A significant, independent association between high preoperative serum NLR and poor clinical outcome was identified in a multivariate analysis for CSS (HR = 1.591; P = 0.007) and RFS (HR = 1.525; P = 0.013). Moreover, when patients were stratified by pathological tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging, the adverse effects of preoperative serum NLR on CSS (HR = 2.294; P = 0.008) and RFS (HR = 2.273; P = 0.008) were greatest in those patients with stage IIIA disease.
CONCLUSION: Preoperative serum NLR is a useful prognostic marker to complement TNM staging for operable ESCC patients, particularly in patients with stage IIIA disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an index of systemic inflammatory burden in malignancy. An elevated NLR has been associated with poor prognosis in a number of cancer sites. We investigated its role in a cohort of patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer. METHODS Eligible patients had primary mucosal squamous cell carcinoma treated with chemoradiotherapy and a minimum follow-up of 12 months (unless deceased). NLR was analysed as <5 vs. ≥5 and above and below the median. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS) and secondary endpoints metastasis free survival and locoregional relapse free survival. Actuarial Kaplan-Meier statistics and log rank test were used. Univariate analysis for age (continuous), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (0 vs. 1), gender (male vs. female), smoking (yes vs. no), American Joint Committee on Cancer stage (III vs. IV) and NLR (<5 vs. ≥5 and <3.3 vs. ≥3.3) were performed. RESULTS Forty-six patients were included in this analysis. Median NLR was 3.3 (0.4-22.8). After a median follow-up of 34 months (13-47 months), the 2-year estimated OS, metastasis free survival and locoregional relapse free survival for NLR <5 vs. ≥5 were 89% vs. 61% (p = 0.017), 84% vs. 64% (p = 0.083) and 81% vs. 70% (p = 0.17) respectively. On univariate analysis NLR ≥5 (p = 0.025), older age (p = 0.01) and ECOG 1 (p = 0.025) were significant for OS. CONCLUSION In this cohort of locally advanced head and neck cancer patients treated with chemoradiotherapy, pre-treatment NLR ≥5 was prognostic for mortality. Further studies are required to confirm these results and to assess the interaction with other prognostic factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a useful predictive factor in several cancers. However, the prognostic value of NLR in patients with esophageal cancer (EC) is still controversial. Therefore, it was necessary for us to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the prognostic value of NLR in patients with EC. METHODS A systematic literature search was performed by using Web of Science, PubMed Central, and Medline to evaluate the prognostic value of NLR in patients with EC. The deadline of our primary search was July 10, 2014. This meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Pooled hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess the association of NLR and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS Six studies involving 1,633 patients were included in our meta-analysis. Our pooled results demonstrated that high NLR was associated with poor OS (HR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.32-1.80, I2=25.3%, P=0.254) and DFS (HR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.25-2.43, I2=63.9%, P=0.096). Subgroup analysis between NLR and OS was performed in a further investigation. When the patients were segregated according to country, sample size, and pathological type, high NLR was also significantly correlated with OS. CONCLUSION High NLR is associated with poor prognosis in patients with EC. NLR may be a significant predictive biomarker in patients with EC.

Abstract
The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been shown to be associated with prognosis in various types of cancer. We evaluated pretreatment NLR as a predictor of poor prognosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and we compared the prognostic value of NLR with other prognostic scores.We retrospectively analyzed 825 patients diagnosed with HCC between October 2008 and May 2012. Baseline data, including the NLR and the Child-Pugh class or Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, were recorded before treatment. The relationships between overall survival (OS) and the study variables were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The prognostic value of NLR was assessed using a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and compared with that of the Barcelona-Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) and Tumor, Node, Metastasis (TNM) staging.The NLR, γ-glutamyltranspeptidase, α-fetoprotein ≥ 400 ng/mL, tumor number ≥ 3, tumor size ≥ 5 cm, lymph node metastasis, portal vein involvement, and Child-Pugh class were significantly associated with OS. The NLR demonstrated the strongest prognostic value (area under ROC curve = 0.811). An NLR ≥ 2.7 was a significant predictor of poor OS (P < 0.0001), and the survival period of patients with an NLR ≥ 2.7 decreased with more advanced BCLC and TNM stage.Pretreatment NLR is a useful prognostic biomarker in HCC patients. The prognostic value of NLR ≥ 2.7 is superior to that of MELD stage or Child-Pugh class, and correlates with that of BCLC and TNM staging scores.

Abstract
The sympathetic nervous system regulates many immune functions and modulates the anti-tumor immune defense response, too. Therefore, we studied the effect of 6-hydroxydopamine induced sympathectomy on selected hematological parameters and inflammatory markers in rats with Yoshida AH130 ascites hepatoma. We found that chemically sympathectomized tumor-bearing rats had significantly increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, leukocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, and plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha. Although our findings showed that sympathetic denervation in tumor-bearing rats led to increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, that is an indicator of the disease progression, we found no significant changes in tumor growth and survival of sympathectomized tumor-bearing rats.
