Abstract
PURPOSE Head and neck cancer accounts for about one third of the global burden in India. Mucosal high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) has been hypothesized as a contributory risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC) but its prevalence in Indian patients is not well established. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of HPV in HNC in India and their attributable fraction by considering the biomarkers of carcinogenesis, p16, and HPV E6/E7 mRNA. METHODS A systematic literature search was done in Medline via PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Cochrane to identify studies on HPV and HNC in the Indian population, published between January 1990 and October 2022. Fifty-four eligible studies were identified and relevant clinical information was collected. Meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled prevalence of HPV DNA, p16INK4a, and E6/E7 mRNA percent positivity by random-effect logistic regression model using Metapreg, STATA 18. RESULTS Thirty-four high-quality studies were taken for meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of HPV in HNC was 20% (95% CI, 12 to 32) with a high level of heterogeneity (I2 = 90.79%). The proportion of HPV in oropharyngeal cancer (OPC; 22% [95% CI, 13 to 34]) and laryngeal cancer (LC; 29% [95% CI, 17 to 46]) was higher than in oral cancer (OC; 16% [95% CI, 8 to 30]). The HPV-attributable fraction of OPC, considering the E6/E7 mRNA and p16 positivity, was 12.54% and 9.68%, respectively, almost similar to LC (11.6% and 9.57%), while it was much lower in OC (3.36% and 4%). CONCLUSION The HPV-attributable fraction is considerably lower for OC, suggesting a negligible causative role of HPV in OC. A significant proportion of OPC and LC are attributed to HPV; however, their exact causative role is unclear because of the presence of other known risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cervical adenocarcinoma (CAC) comprises a heterogeneous group of tumors that are not universally associated with HPV infection. As has been shown in other organs, it is becoming increasingly apparent that HPV status significantly affects the prognosis of adenocarcinoma. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the infection status of high-risk Human papillomavirus (hrHPV) in CAC and evaluate its impact on the survival of patients. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), and Clinical Trials.gov were searched from inception to May 1st, 2022. Data on HPV infection status and survival outcomes were evaluated using STATA 16.0. RESULTS Seventy-one studies with 11,278 participants were included in HPV infection analysis and eight studies with 1099 participants were included in prognosis analysis. The HPV infection rate (including high-risk and low-risk) and hrHPV infection rate in CAC were 75% (95% CI 0.70-0.80, 6978 participants) and 75% (95% CI 0.70-0.81, 4906 participants), respectively. HPV-16 and -18 were the most common HPVs in CAC, with pooled infection rates of 37% (95% CI 0.33-0.41, 7848 participants) and 34% (95% CI 0.30-0.38, 7730 participants), respectively. hrHPV infection was associated with better overall survival (HR 0.23, 95% CI 0.11-0.47, 1013 participants), better disease-free survival (HR 0.18, 95% CI 0.07-0.43, 292 participants), better progression-free survival (HR 0.20, 95% CI 0.08-0.47, 271 participants) and less recurrence (RR 0.30, 95% CI 0.07-0.43, 181 participants). CONCLUSION HPV infection rates were high in CAC. HPV-16 and -18 had the highest infection rates in CAC. However, hrHPV infection was associated with better survival and less recurrence. Future studies should clarify the relationship between hrHPV infection and other prognostic factors and make reasonable treatment strategies for CAC with different HPV status. Abstract
Incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oral cancers is on the rise. However, epidemiological data of this subset of cancers are limited. Dental hospital poses a unique advantage in detection of HPV-positive oral malignancies. We assessed the utility of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, which are readily available, for evaluation of high-risk HPV infection in oral cancer. For protocol standardization, we used 20 prospectively collected paired FFPE and fresh tissues of histopathologically confirmed oral cancer cases reported in Oral Medicine department of a dental hospital for comparative study. Only short PCRs (~ 200 bp) of DNA isolated using a modified xylene-free method displayed a concordant HPV result. For HPV analysis, we used additional 30 retrospectively collected FFPE tissues. DNA isolated from these specimens showed an overall 23.4% (11/47) HPV positivity with detection of HPV18. Comparison of HPV positivity from dental hospital FFPE specimens with overall HPV positivity of freshly collected oral cancer specimens (n = 55) from three cancer care hospitals of the same region showed notable difference (12.7%; 7/55). Further, cancer hospital specimens showed HPV16 positivity and displayed a characteristic difference in reported sub-sites and patient spectrum. Overall, using a xylene-free FFPE DNA isolation method clubbed with short amplicon PCR, we showed detection of HPV-positive oral cancer in dental hospitals.

Abstract
In this study, all data from Iran on human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and types among women with normal cervical cytology, premalignant lesions, and cervical cancer were obtained and pooled. The overall HPV prevalence was found to be 9% in women with a normal cervix, 55% in atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance or atypia cases, 58% and 69% in women with low and high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, respectively, and 81% among women with invasive cervical cancer. In all of the studied groups, HPV 16 was the most common HPV type, followed by HPV 18. In conclusion, this meta-analysis revealed that it will be beneficial if current HPV vaccines are integrated into the national vaccination programs of Iran.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To date, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has not been integrated into the national vaccination program of most countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO), except for the United Arab Emirates and Libya. The knowledge of HPV genotype distribution in cervical neoplasia is valuable to predict the impact of current HPV vaccines on cancer prevention and can help the health policymakers to select the most appropriate vaccine types in their countries. METHODS Hence, this meta-analysis recapitulates all available data on HPV prevalence and genotypes in women with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I-III or low- and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL and HSIL, respectively), and invasive cervical cancer (ICC) in EMRO countries. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 5,990 cases of cervical precancer and cancer. The overall HPV prevalence was 85.4, 71.3, 59.2, and 34.8% in women with ICC, CIN II-III or HSIL, CIN I or LSIL, and ASCUS, respectively. HPV 16 was the most common genotype followed by HPV 18, representing 58 and 16.5% in ICC cases, respectively. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis showed that the introduction of current HPV vaccines into national vaccination programs and the establishment of comprehensive screening programs in EMRO countries is beneficial by preventing 74.5% of cervical neoplasia.

Abstract
Coinfections with multiple types of human papillomavirus (HPV) occur in cervical adenocarcinoma (ADC). However, it remains unclear the clustering patterns of multiple types in HPV coinfections and relevant factors in ADC. A total of 718 paraffin-embedded ADC specimens were collected in China and tested for HPV genotypes using SPF10-INNO-LIPA. The prevalence of HPV coinfections and clustering patterns by geographical regions, histological subtypes and ages were assessed. Type-specific attribution of HPV to ADC adjusted by HPV coinfections were calculated. The prevalence of HPV coinfections was found to be 8.4% in ADC cases with slight variation by geographic regions between 2.2% and 12.5%. The 88.3% of all HPV multiple infections in ADC were two types of HPV coinfections with predominant combination of HPV 16 and HPV 18. The attribution to ADC was 88.0% for HPV 16/18 targeted by bivalent and quadrivalent vaccine and 96.8% for HPV 16/18/31/33/45/52/58 targeted by nonavalent vaccine. Clustering patterns of multiple types were related with histological categories and age at diagnosis. In conclusion, HPV coinfections are uncommonly prevalent in ADC cases with slight variation by geographic regions and distinct clustering patterns of multiple types by histological subtypes and ages at diagnosis. The high attribution of carcinogenic HPV types to ADC predicts potential protection of HPV vaccine against ADC.

Abstract
Some studies suggest that HPV infection may be important carcinogenic factor in development of some part of colorectal cancers. However, in the worldwide literature concerning this type of tumours, the great variability in HPV frequency is noticed. In Poland, the incidence of HPV infection in colorectal cancers was examined in five studies so far and their results are also conflicting. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the HPV presence in the group of 120 patients with adenocarcinomas of rectum. HPV infection was assessed on the basis of DNA extracted from collected formalin fixed paraffin embedded tumour specimens. Viral presence was evaluated using two PCR based methods: nested PCR and quantitative PCR (qPCR) with primers specific for HPV16. All HPV positive samples were subjected to virus genotyping using AmoyDx® Human papillomavirus (HPV) Genotyping Detection Kit and P16 immunostaining. Among 120 evaluated colorectal tumours, HPV DNA was detected in 2 cancers (1.67%) by nested PCR and in 2 (1.67%) tumours by qPCR, including 1 sample diagnosed as HPV positive on the basis of both PCR variants. Two HPV positive cancers had HPV16 infection and other one HPV18. All three tumours with positivity of HPV DNA were P16 negative. In south - central Poland, HPV infection in rectal cancers probably has not influence on rectal carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Background Squamous papillomas are exophytic proliferations of surface oral epithelium. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is widely accepted as the etiology of squamous papillomas however the virus cannot be detected in a significant percentage of lesions. Material and Methods Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we tested 35 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) squamous papillomas for the presence of HPV DNA. Results Six papillomas (17%) tested positive for HPV DNA; four contained HPV-6 and two contained HPV-11. Given that β–globin DNA was only identified in half of the samples, DNA degradation appears to have significantly impacted the results. Conclusions The results likely represent an underestimation of the true number of HPV-positive specimens in our study. Potential explanations for HPV-negative squamous papillomas include transient HPV infection, failure of the experiment to detect HPV if present, or the possibility that some lesions may not result from HPV infection. Abstract
More than 25 years ago it was established that a HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection was the causal factor for cervical cancer. Based on this discovery HPV vaccines were developed and primary HPV screening proposed. The impact of 10 years prophylactic HPV vaccination with the bivalent and quadrivalent vaccines has been tremendous. There is a reduction of HPV infections 16/18, 31, 33 and 45 of respectively 89%, 94%, 79% and 83%. High grade lesions have been reduced by 85% and warts by 90%. Within 20 to 30 years a reduction in cervical cancer incidence, by 70-80%, is to be expected. The 9 valent HPV vaccine, which was introduced last year and is reimbursed for girls between 12 - 19 years, is expected to increase the figures by 14 to 18%. Recently, doubt has been created regarding primary HPV screening. Since 2017, the annual screening report in Belgium suggests that 15% of the cervical cancers were HPV negative. Previous published data in Belgium (period 2001 - 2008) showed that the number of HPV negative tumors is less than half of the suggested figure (7%). Frequent reasons for false negative HPV tumors are the used HPV testing methods and the misclassification of endometrial cancers or metastasis as cervical cancers. Other explanations are the loss of HPV expression and the existence of cervical cancers independent of HPV. The incidence of HPV negative tumors doesn't give any information about the performance of primary HPV screening. Data from randomized controlled trials are very clear: if a woman has a normal cytology and no HPV infection or normal cytology and a HPV infection, then her chance of developing a CIN3 + lesion after 5 years is, respectively, 0,2% and 6%. In Belgium, primary HPV screening with dual-stain cytology triage would considerably reduce the incidence (36%) and mortality (40%) of cervical cancer. There is necessity to improve the screening as we are entering an era of vaccinated women who will get screened. Standardized high quality HPV testing is the key stone for improvement. HPV screening preferable with triage markers is superior to cytology, despite the fact that there are HPV negative cancers. The fact that there are HPV negative cancers should not undermine all idea's regarding primary HPV screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The etiology and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of breast cancer still remain poorly understood. Some epidemiological studies have shown an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and breast cancer. However, the findings are controversial. OBJECTIVE Our study was aimed to investigate the presence of HPV DNA in breast carcinomas of Iranian women. METHODS In total, 72 samples of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues of breast cancer collected between December 2014 and April 2016 were examined. HPV DNA detection was performed by nested-PCR assay. Next, positive samples were subjected to genotyping by the CLART HPV2 microarray system. All statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS v.18.0. RESULTS HPV DNA was detected in 4/72 (5.55%) samples. Clinical factors were not statistically associated with HPV presence. However, CLART HPV2 microarray assay failed to determine the genotype of any positive samples. CONCLUSION The low frequency of HPV detected in our study does not support an association between breast carcinoma and HPV infection. However, it is possible that HPV may be responsible for breast carcinogenesis only in small percentage of all breast cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether medical history, clinical examination and human papilloma virus (HPV) genotype influence spontaneous regression in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade I (CIN-I). MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 232 women who were histologically diagnosed as have CIN-I by means of Kaplan-Meier curves, the pattern of spontaneous regression according to the medical history, clinical examination, and HPV genotype. RESULTS Spontaneous regression occurred in most patients and was influenced by the presence of multiple HPV genotypes but not by the HPV genotype itself. In addition, regression frequency was diminished when more than 50% of the cervix surface was affected or when an abnormal cytology was present at the beginning of follow-up. CONCLUSION The frequency of regression in CIN-I is high, making long-term follow-up and conservative management advisable. Data from clinical examination and HPV genotyping might help to anticipate which lesions will regress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was performed to analyze the associations between cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition, using cervical samples from previous studies in Tanzania and Uganda. METHODS A total of 161 adult women who acquired HIV infection during follow-up and 464 individually matched HIV-seronegative controls were selected from 5 cohorts of women working in bars and recreational facilities. Stored cervical samples were tested for 37 HPV genotypes, using a polymerase chain reaction assay (Roche Linear Array genotyping assay). Multivariate matched analysis using conditional logistic regression was performed to evaluate HPV infection, persistence, and clearance as predictors of HIV acquisition. RESULTS HIV seroconverters were significantly more likely than controls to frequently drink alcohol and to be infected with Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, or herpes simplex virus type 2. There was no evidence of an association between HIV acquisition and any detectable HPV at the visit prior to HIV seroconversion (adjusted odds ratio, 1.02; 95% confidence interval, .66-1.57) or between HIV acquisition and persistent HPV infection (defined as 2 positive HPV genotype-specific test results at least 6 months apart), cleared HPV infection (defined as a positive HPV test result followed by negative HPV genotype-specific test result), or newly acquired HPV infection, compared with HPV-negative women. CONCLUSIONS There was no evidence of association between HPV infection status and subsequent HIV acquisition. These results stand in contrast to other observational studies.

Abstract
Assessment of Human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and genotype distribution is important for monitoring the impact of prophylactic HPV vaccination. This study aimed to demonstrate the HPV genotypes predominating in pre-malignant and cervical cancers in Northern Ireland (NI) before the vaccination campaign has effect. Formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks from 2,303 women aged 16-93 years throughout NI were collated between April 2011 and February 2013. HPV DNA was amplified by PCR and HPV genotyping undertaken using the Roche(®) linear array detection kit. In total, 1,241 out of 1,830 eligible samples (68.0%) tested positive for HPV, with the majority of these [1,181/1,830 (64.5%)] having high-risk (HR) HPV infection; 37.4% were positive for HPV-16 (n = 684) and 5.1% for HPV-18 (n = 93). HPV type-specific prevalence was 48.1%, 65.9%, 81.3%, 92.2%, and 64.3% among cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) Grades I-III, squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (AC) cases, respectively. Most SCC cases (81.3%) had only one HPV genotype detected and almost a third (32.0%) of all cervical pathologies were HPV negative including 51.9% of CIN I (n = 283), 34.1% CIN II (n = 145), 18.7% of CIN III (n = 146), 7.8% of SCC (n = 5), and 35.7% of AC (n = 5) cases. This study provides important baseline data for monitoring the effect of HPV vaccination in NI and for comparison with other UK regions. The coverage of other HR-HPV genotypes apart from 16 and 18, including HPV-45, 31, 39, and 52, and the potential for cross protection, should be considered when considering future polyvalent vaccines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several meta-analyses confirmed the five most prevalent human papillomavirus (HPV) strains in women with and without cervical neoplastic diseases are HPV16, 18, 31, 52, and 58. HPV16/18 are the predominant oncogenic genotypes, causing approximately 70% of global cervical cancer cases. The vast majority of the women studied in previous analyses were from Europe, North America, Asia, and most recently Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite the high burden of cervical cancer morbidity and mortality in Africa, a robust meta-analysis of HPV genotype prevalence and distribution in African women is lacking. METHODS AND FINDINGS We systematically searched 14 major databases from inception to August 2013 without language restriction, following the Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Seventy-one studies from 23 African countries were identified after screening 1162 citations and data abstracted and study quality appraised from 195 articles. HPV type-specific prevalence and distribution was estimated from 17,273 cases of women with normal cervical cytology; 1019 women with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS); 1444 women with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL); 1571 women with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL); and 4,067 cases of invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC). Overall prevalence of HPV16/18 were 4.4% and 2.8% of women with normal cytology, 12.0% and 4.4% with ASCUS, 14.5% and 10.0% with LSIL, 31.2% and 13.9% with HSIL, and 49.7% and 18.0% with ICC, respectively. Study limitations include the lack of adequate data from Middle and Northern African regions, and variations in the HPV type-specific sensitivity of different genotyping protocols. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this study is the most comprehensive assessment of the overall prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes in African women with and without different cervical neoplasias. We have established that HPV16/18 account for 67.7% of ICC cases among African women. Based on our findings, we highly recommend the administration of existing prophylactic vaccines to younger women not infected with HPV16/18 and an increase in HPV screening efforts for high-risk genotypes to prevent cervical cancer. HPV prevalence and genotypes in different histological subtypes of cervical adenocarcinoma, a worldwide analysis of 760 cases. Mod Pathol 2014; 27:1559-67. Abstract
The goal of our study was to provide comprehensive data on the worldwide human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype distribution in patients with invasive cervical adenocarcinoma in correlation with histologic tumor subtypes, geographical location, patients' age, and duration of sample storage. Paraffin-embedded samples of 760 cervical adenocarcinoma cases were collected worldwide. A three-level pathology review of cases was performed to obtain consensus histologic diagnoses and 682 cases were determined to be eligible for further analysis. HPV DNA detection and genotyping was performed using SPF-10/DEIA/LiPA(25) system (version 1). Classic cervical adenocarcinoma accounted for 83.1% of cases, while rare histological variants accounted for a few percent of cases individually. HPV positivity varied significantly between the different histologic tumor subtypes. Classic cervical adenocarcinoma showed high HPV positivity (71.8%), while other adenocarcinoma types had significantly lower HPV prevalence (endometrioid 27.3%, serous 25%, clear cell 20%, not otherwise specified 13.9%, and minimal deviation 8.3%). In all, 91.8% of HPV-positive tumors showed the presence of a single viral type and in 7% of cases multiple viral types were detected. Three HPV genotypes, HPV 16, 18, and 45, dominated in all adenocarcinomas and together accounted for 94.1% of HPV-positive tumors. HPV16 was the most common and found in 50.9% of HPV-positive cases, followed by HPV18 (31.6%) and HPV45 (11.6%). HPV prevalence varied depending on geographical region, patient age, and sample storage time. Tumors from older patients and tumor samples with longer storage time showed lower HPV prevalence. Our results indicate that HPV vaccines may prevent up to 82.5% (HPV16/18) and up to 95.3% (9-valent vaccine) of HPV-positive cervical adenocarcinomas, mostly the classic type. HPV testing and vaccination will not provide full coverage for a very small subset of classical adenocarcinomas and most of the rare tumor variants such as clear cell, serous, endometrioid, and minimal deviation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The HPV genotyping line probe assay INNO-LiPA EXTRA allows the detection of a wider spectrum of viral types compared to the earlier V2 version of the assay. Its performance in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues is unknown. OBJECTIVES To test the EXTRA assay in HPV genotyping of paired cervical scrapings and corresponding FFPE biopsy specimens. STUDY DESIGN Paired samples from 188 women with abnormal cytology were examined using the INNO-LiPA HPV genotyping assay, version EXTRA. The assay can simultaneously detect 18 high-risk, 7 low-risk, and 2 unclassified HPV types. Kappa statistics were used to measure interrater agreement between groups. RESULTS The evaluation of paired cervical scraping and biopsy samples gave a 100% overall agreement for HPV status and of 72.9% (kappa 0.6554) for the number of infecting HPVs. 392 out of 507 individual HPV types were concordant, corresponding to a positive agreement rate of 87.2% (95% CI 84.1-90.3). As to the individual genotypes, the agreement was absolute for HPV 45, 68, 73 (kappa 1), excellent for HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 35, 39, 44, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 69/71 and 82 (kappa 0.7796-0.9714), good for HPV26, 33, 43, 58, 66 and 74 (kappa 0.6768-0.7449), and poor for HPV 59 and 40. These agreement values were comparable to those obtained with the V2 assay. CONCLUSIONS The EXTRA assay provided excellent performance in HPV typing on FFPE samples comparable to the earlier version of the test despite higher complexity and increased coverage of types.

Abstract
Estimating the type-specific prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck cancer (HNSCC) is helpful in predicting the impact of HPV immunization. Objective To estimate the overall prevalence, and gender and age-specific prevalence of HPV in HNSCC. Method This cross sectional retrospective study was carried out in four pathology laboratories of Medellin, Colombia. HPV testing was performed by GP5+/6+ PCR-based RLB and HPV 16 and 18 type-specific PCR. Results 175 primary HNSCC cases consecutively diagnosed between 1999 and 2008 with confirmed diagnosis and amplifiable DNA were included. Overall HPV prevalence was 18.9%. HPV was found in 23.9%, 17.5% and 13.3% of the oral cavity, larynx and oropharynx cases respectively. Among HPV positive cases, 82% were HPV 16 and 18% were HPV 18. No other HPV genotypes were identified. Most patients were males. Male patients were younger that their female counterparts, particularly in oral cavity cancer cases. Conclusion HPV 16 and 18 genotypes were found in nearly 20% of HNSCC cases in Colombian patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge on human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype distribution in recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is essential to assess the impact of HPV vaccine. It is provided information for Colombia. METHODS In all, 189 RRP primary cases diagnosed between 1985 and 2009 were identified from 5 pathology laboratories of Cali and Medellin, Colombia. HPV DNA testing in 129 cases that fulfilled inclusion criteria (available paraffin blocks, amplifiable DNA, and confirmed histologic diagnosis of RRP) was performed by the SPF-10/LiPA25 assay (version 1). RESULTS Of all cases 36.1% were juvenile (<12 years old) and a majority of adults were males (p = .09); 95% of cases were HPV positive. HPV 6, 11, and 16 contributed to 69%, 27.1%, and 7.8% of all HPV positive cases. Twelve cases (9.3%) showed multiple infections; 8 of these were HPV 6 or 11 positive. CONCLUSIONS HPV prophylactic vaccine including HPV 6 and 11 may have a major impact against RRP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited data are available on the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in the general population and in invasive cervical cancer (ICC) in Uganda. Yet, with the advent of preventive HPV vaccines that target HPV 16 and 18 responsible for causing about 70% of ICC cases in the world, such information is crucial to predict how vaccination and HPV-based screening will influence prevention of ICC. METHODS To review the distribution of HPV infection and prevalent genotypes, electronic databases (e.g. PubMed/MEDLINE and HINARI) were searched for peer reviewed English articles on HPV infection up to November 30, 2010. Eligible studies were selected according to the following criteria: DNA-confirmed cervical or male genital HPV prevalence and genotypes, HPV incidence estimates and HPV seroprevalence among participants. RESULTS Twenty studies were included in the review. Among HIV negative adult women, the prevalence of HR-HPV infections ranged from 10.2% -40.0% compared to 37.0% -100.0% among HIV positive women. Among HIV positive young women aged below 25 years, the prevalence of HR-HPV genotypes ranged from 41.6% -75.0% compared to 23.7% -67.1% among HIV negative women. Multiple infections with non vaccine HR-HPV genotypes were frequent in both HIV positive and HIV negative women. The main risk factors for prevalent HPV infections were age, lifetime number of sexual partners and HIV infection. Incident infections with HR-HPV genotypes were more frequent among adult HIV positive than HIV negative women estimated at 17.3 and 7.0 per 100 person-years, respectively. Similarly, incident HR-HPV among young women aged below 25 years were more frequent among HIV positive (40.0 per 100 person-years) than HIV negative women (20.3 per 100 person-years) women. The main risk factor for incident infection was HIV infection. HPV 16 and 18 were the most common genotypes in ICC with HPV 16/18 contributing up to 73.5% of cases with single infections.Among uncircumcised adult HIV positive males, HR-HPV prevalence ranged from 55.3% -76.6% compared to 38.6% -47.6% in HIV negative males. Incident and multiple HR-HPV infections were frequent in HIV positive males. Being uncircumcised was the main risk factor for both prevalent and incident HPV infection. CONCLUSION Infections with HR-HPV genotypes were very common particularly among HIV positive individuals and young women irrespective of HIV status. Given the high prevalence of HIV infection, HPV-associated conditions represent a major public health burden in Uganda. However, although the most common HPV genotypes in ICC cases in Uganda were those targeted by current preventive vaccines, there were a large number of individuals infected with other HR-HPV genotypes. Technology allowing, these other HR-HPV types should be considered in the development of the next generation of vaccines.

Abstract
Comparative evaluation of Abbott RealTime and Innogenetics INNO-LiPA on alternately processed formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens of 31 cervical cancers and 31 uterine myomas showed complete agreement in the detection of 14 assay-common HPV genotypes and partial genotyping of HPV-16 and HPV-18. The tissue preparation protocol was shown to be sample-to-sample contamination safe.
