Investigation of Diospyros Kaki L.f husk extracts as corrosion inhibitors and bactericide in oil field

Insight into the corrosion mitigation performance of three novel benzimidazole derivatives of amino acids for carbon steel (X56) in 1 M HCl solution

Three new organic molecules having a benzimidazole base were synthesized and used for the protection of carbon steel (X56) against corrosion in 1.00 M HCl solution. The protection against corrosion was assessed by electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). In addition, the electronic and molecular structure of the synthesized molecules were computationally investigated and correlated to corrosion inhibition. Global reactivity descriptors, molecular orbitals (FMO and NBO) and local reactivity descriptors (molecular electrostatic potential map and Fukui functions) were discussed. The results showed a maximum protective efficiency range between 95% and 98% indicating high corrosion inhibition. Moreover, all molecules were able to combat the cathodic as well as anodic reaction simultaneously, revealing a mixed-type resistance. SEM and EDX verified effective adhering film formation to the metal surface. In accordance, the theoretical calculations showed effective electron reallocation from the organic film to the X56 c-steel surface. Furthermore, the adsorption annealing calculations revealed that structural layers of these molecules hold parallel and close to the metal surface with adsorption energy from 249.383 to 380.794 kcal mol^-1, showing strong inhibitor-metal contact.

Utilizing birch leaf extract in pickling liquid as a sustainable source of corrosion inhibitor for pipeline steel

This study set out to determine the effectiveness of birch leaves extract (BLE) as a corrosion inhibitor against X52 pipeline steel in the pickling solution. Chemical and electrochemical techniques, as well as scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), and adsorption isotherms were used in the research. Various triterpenoids, including betulin, betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, sitosterol, and kaempferol, are unquestionably involved in the corrosion inhibition mechanism, according to the high-performance-liquid-chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The 95% efficiency of the produced BLE extract (at optimum concentration 400 mg L^-1) significantly reduced the corrosion rate of X52 pipeline steel in the pickling solution. The adsorption of BLE extract molecules on the X52-steel surface was demonstrated by SEM and FT-IR analysis. The adsorption activity follows the Langmuir adsorption theory.

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Anticorrosive Activities of Ceriops tagal Plant Extract

Mangroves are plants known for their various medicinal and economical values, and therefore are widely investigated for their phytochemical, antioxidant, antidiarrheal, and antimicrobial activities. In the present study, we analyze the antioxidant and anticorrosive properties of Ceriops tagal (C. tagal), a tropical and subtropical mangrove plant of the Rhizophoraceae family. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were found to be 101.52 and 35.71 mg/g, respectively. The extract (100 µg/mL) exhibited 83.88, 85, and 87% antioxidant property against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide free radicals. In addition, 600 ppm of C. tagal extract showed 95% corrosion inhibition against 1 M HCl attack on mild steel at 303 ± 1 K, which declined over other concentrations and temperatures, where AAS produced 82% inhibition at 600 ppm. UV-visible spectroscopy analysis revealed the formation of an inhibitor metal complex. The elemental analysis provided the presence of 84.21, 9.01, and 6.37% of Fe, O, and C, respectively, in inhibited mild steel, whereas the same were 71.54, 22.1, and 4.34%, respectively, in uninhibited specimen, stressing the presence of protective film on the metal surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) also showed some noteworthy changes in both uninhibited and inhibited mild steel, making C. tagal plant a better alternative than any other synthetic inhibitors. Further, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface topography analysis showed that 600 ppm of C. tagal extract significantly diminished corrosion on the surface of mild steel.

Evaluation of the corrosion inhibition efficacy of Cola acuminata extract for low carbon steel in simulated acid pickling environment

In this study, Kola nut extract (KE) was evaluated for inhibiting ability towards low carbon steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution using weight loss and electrochemical techniques. The surface of the corroded carbon steel was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Elemental composition of the corrosion products and/or adsorbed inhibitor film on the carbon steel surface was determined with the aid of an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) experiments were also performed to get information about the interaction of KE with the carbon steel surface. It was found that KE exhibited good corrosion protection property. From weight loss technique, corrosion rate was reduced from 0.387 to 0.054 mm/year by 700 ppm of KE at room temperature after 24 h immersion and this corresponded to inhibition efficiency (IE) of 86%. The IE however depreciated with rise in temperature. FTIR results reveal that KE interacted with the carbon steel surface through the O and N heteroatoms of its phytoconstituents. FTIR spectroscopy, UV-vis, SEM, AFM, and EDX data provided proof of KE adsorption on the steel surface as reason for the corrosion inhibition.

Progress on pharmaceutical drugs, plant extracts and ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors

In the past, lives and wealth have been lost due to corrosion in almost all engineering fields. Not only this, the cost of reviving damaged equipments in the industry due to corrosion contributed a lot to the gross domestic product of a nation. Thus, all hands must be on desk to combat this harzadous act via time to time research on its final resolution. However, current research works have revealed effective and reliable corrosion inhibitors from pharmaceutical drugs, plant extracts and ionic liquids as organic green corrosion inhibitors (OGCIs) with accommodative attributes such as being environmentally friendly, readily available, biodegradable, non-harmful, relatively cheap and many others to mention a few. This paper opens readers mind into the detailed classifications, mechanisms and active functional groups of these eco-friendly OGCIs. Not only the corrosion efficiency calculation ways but also influencing factors on efficiency were presented. Plant extracts, pharmaceutical drugs, ionic liquids and synthetic inhibitors, as among major sources of OGCIs, used in preventing material corrosion in corrosive media were separately and comprehensively examined. The significance of values obtained from simulating presented mathematical models governing OGCIs kinetics, adsorption isotherm and adsorption thermodynamics was also included. In conclusion, beneficial recommendations for both current and prospective researchers in the field of Corrosion Engineering were presented.

Corrosion-resistant systems of formate packer fluid for G3/N80/TP110SS pipes at high temperature, high pressure and high H2S/CO2 ratios

A series of corrosion problems caused by high-temperature, high-pressure and high-acid gas environments has been an issue in oil and gas production for a long time. During the development of a high-acid gas field, the petroleum pipe is subjected to many aspects of corrosion, and the corrosion mechanism is complicated by the condition of the coexistence of H2S/CO2. Based on the study of the corrosion problem associated with the formate packer fluid in Southwest China, three kinds of steels were studied for corrosion prevention in the alloy G3/N80 steel/TP110SS steel. The study shows that the corrosion rate of the formate packer fluid is low, but corrosion is severe in environments characterized by high temperatures, high pressures and high-acid gas contents. Based on the consideration of cost and the difficulty of realization, an anti-corrosion system was constructed based on the existing packer fluid, mainly through the introduction of a variety of anti-corrosion additives. Through the selection of various additives and corrosion experiments, a corrosion protection system of formate packer fluid was developed. Corrosion tests show that the corrosion rate of the system must be less than 0.076 mm yr-1 to achieve the purpose of corrosion protection. The formate packer fluid with corrosion protection can meet the needs of the current application.
