SERS analysis of single cells and subcellular components: A review

SERS is a rapidly advancing and non-destructive technique that has been proven to be more reliable and convenient than other traditional analytical methods. Due to its sensitivity and specificity, this technique is earning its place as a routine and powerful tool in biological and medical studies, especially for the analysis of living cells and subcellular components. This paper reviewed the research progress of single-cell SERS that has been made in the last few years and discussed challenges and future perspectives of this technique. The reviewed SERS platforms have been categorized according to their nature into the following types: (1) colloid-based, substrate-based, or hybrid; (2) ligand-based or ligand-free, and (3) label-based or label-free. The advantages and disadvantages of each type and their potential applications in various fields are thoroughly discussed.

Synthesis of Gold Clusters and Nanoparticles Using Cinnamon Extract-A Mechanism and Kinetics Study

In this work, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, High Resolution Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopes and selected experimental conditions were used to screen the colloidal system. The obtained results complement the established knowledge regarding the mechanism of nanoparticle formation. The process of gold nanoparticles formation involves a two-step reduction of Au ions to Au(0); atom association and metastable cluster formation; autocatalytic cluster growth; ultra-small particle formation (1-2 nm, in diameter); particle growth and larger particles formation; and further autocatalytic crystal growth (D > 100 nm). As a reductant of Au(III) ions, a cinnamon extract was used. It was confirmed that eugenol as one of the cinnamon extract compounds is responsible for fast Au(III) ion reduction, whereas cinnamaldehyde acts as a gold-particle stabilizer. Spectrophotometry studies were carried out to track kinetic traces of gold nanoparticle (D > 2 nm) formation in the colloidal solution. Using the Watzky-Finke model, the rate constants of nucleation and autocatalytic growth were determined. Moreover, the values of energy, enthalpy and entropy of activation for stages related to the process of nanoparticle formation (Index 1 relates to nucleation, and Index 2 relates to the growth) were determined and found to be E1 = 70.6 kJ, E2 = 19.6 kJ, ΔH1 = 67.9 kJ/mol, ΔH2 = 17 kJ/mol, ΔS1 = -76.2 J/(K·mol), ΔS2 = -204.2 J/(K·mol), respectively. In this work the limitation of each technique (spectrophotometry vs. HRSTEM) as a complex tool to understand the dynamic of the colloidal system was discussed.

Synthesis of Metallic Nanostructures Using Ionizing Radiation and Their Applications

This paper reviews the radiation-induced synthesis of metallic nanostructures and their applications. Radiolysis is a powerful method for synthesizing metallic nanoparticles in solution and heterogeneous media, and it is a clean alternative to other existing physical, chemical, and physicochemical methods. By varying parameters such as the absorbed dose, dose rate, concentrations of metallic precursors, and nature of stabilizing agents, it is possible to control the size, shape, and morphology (alloy, core-shell, etc.) of the nanostructures and, consequently, their properties. Therefore, the as-synthesized nanoparticles have many potential applications in biology, medicine, (photo)catalysis, or energy conversion.

NanoModeler CG: A Tool for Modeling and Engineering Functional Nanoparticles at a Coarse-Grained Resolution

Functionalized metal nanoparticles (NPs) are macromolecular assemblies with a tunable physicochemical profile that makes them interesting for biotechnology, materials science, and energy conversion. In this regard, molecular simulations offer a way to scrutinize the structural and dynamical features of monolayer-protected NPs and their interactions with relevant matrices. Previously, we developed NanoModeler, a webserver that automates the preparation of functionalized gold NPs for atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Here, we present NanoModeler CG (www.nanomodeler.it), a new release of NanoModeler that now also allows the building and parametrizing of monolayer-protected metal NPs at a coarse-grained (CG) resolution. This new version extends our original methodology to NPs of eight different core shapes, conformed by up to 800,000 beads and coated by eight different monolayer morphologies. The resulting topologies are compatible with the Martini force field but are easily extendable to any other set of parameters parsed by the user. Finally, we demonstrate NanoModeler CG's capabilities by reproducing experimental structural features of alkylthiolated NPs and rationalizing the brush-to-mushroom phase transition of PEGylated anionic NPs. By automating the construction and parametrization of functionalized NPs, the NanoModeler series offers a standardized way to computationally model monolayer-protected nanosized systems.

The interactions between DNA nanostructures and cells: A critical overview from a cell biology perspective

DNA nanotechnology has yielded remarkable advances in  composite materials with diverse applications in biomedicine. The specificity and predictability of building 3D structures at the nanometer scale make DNA nanotechnology a promising tool for uses in biosensing, drug delivery, cell modulation, and bioimaging. However, for successful translation of DNA nanostructures to real-world applications, it is crucial to understand how they interact with living cells, and the consequences of such interactions. In this review, we summarize the current state of knowledge on the interactions of DNA nanostructures with cells. We identify key challenges, from a cell biology perspective, that influence progress towards the clinical translation of DNA nanostructures. We close by providing an outlook on what questions must be addressed to accelerate the clinical translation of DNA nanostructures. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Self-assembled DNA nanostructures (DNs) offers unique opportunities to overcome persistent challenges in the nanobiotechnology field. However, the interactions between engineered DNs and living cells are still not well defined. Critical systematization of current cellular models and biological responses triggered by DNs is a crucial foundation for the successful clinical translation of DNA nanostructures. Moreover, such an analysis will identify the pitfalls and challenges that are present in the field, and provide a basis for overcoming those challenges.

Development and Characterization of Silver Containing Free Standing Polymer FILMS for Dosimetry Applications

Polymer gels and films, due to their near equivalence to biological tissue, are amongst the most promising future dosimetry tools for medical applications. The application of polymer dose gels is limited by the sensitivity of dose readout methods and dose gel properties. It is a challenge to find suitable dosimeters for registration of doses delivered to the target by orthovoltage therapy units. The application of metal-particle-enriched polymer composites for dose registration in X-ray therapy might be an elegant solution, especially if recent dose-reading technologies exploring advantages of different physical phenomena are involved. In this work, X-rays from the orthovoltage therapy range were used for the irradiation of experimental samples. In addition, radiation-induced processes of formation of silver nanoparticles in AgNO₃–PVA gels and in free standing AgNO₃PVA films, also containing some additional solvents, namely glycerol, ethanol, and isopropanol, have been investigated, with the aim to apply the developed composites for medical dosimetry purposes. A simple and environmentally friendly method for the formation of free-standing AgPVA films at room temperature was proposed and realized for preparing AgPVA films for investigation. Radiation-induced synthesis of silver nanoparticles in AgPVA composites was investigated, analyzing LPSR-based UV-VIS spectral changes to the irradiated films with respect to irradiation doses, and dose-related tendencies were also evaluated. It was shown that AgPVA films were more sensitive for detection of doses from the interval 0–1.0 Gy, thus indicating potential application of AgPVA films for dosimetry purposes.

Embracing nanomaterials' interactions with the innate immune system

Immunotherapy has firmly established itself as a compelling avenue for treating disease. Although many clinically approved immunotherapeutics engage the adaptive immune system, therapeutically targeting the innate immune system remains much less explored. Nanomedicine offers a compelling opportunity for innate immune system engagement, as many nanomaterials inherently interact with myeloid cells (e.g., monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells) or can be functionalized to target their cell-surface receptors. Here, we provide a perspective on exploiting nanomaterials for innate immune system regulation. We focus on specific nanomaterial design parameters, including size, form, rigidity, charge, and surface decoration. Furthermore, we examine the potential of high-throughput screening and machine learning, while also providing recommendations for advancing the field. Protein Corona Inhibits Endosomal Escape of Functionalized DNA Nanostructures in Living Cells

DNA nanostructures (DNs) can be designed in a controlled and programmable manner, and these structures are increasingly used in a variety of biomedical applications, such as the delivery of therapeutic agents. When exposed to biological liquids, most nanomaterials become covered by a protein corona, which in turn modulates their cellular uptake and the biological response they elicit. However, the interplay between living cells and designed DNs are still not well established. Namely, there are very limited studies that assess protein corona impact on DN biological activity. Here, we analyzed the uptake of functionalized DNs in three distinct hepatic cell lines. Our analysis indicates that cellular uptake is linearly dependent on the cell size. Further, we show that the protein corona determines the endolysosomal vesicle escape efficiency of DNs coated with an endosome escape peptide. Our study offers an important basis for future optimization of DNs as delivery systems for various biomedical applications.

Synthesis of near-infrared absorbing triangular Au nanoplates using biomineralisation peptides

Triangular Au nanoplates (TrAuNPls) possessing strong plasmonic properties can be used as photothermal agents in cancer therapy. However, the controlled preparation of such morphologies typically requires harsh synthetic conditions. Biomolecules offer an alternative route to developing biocompatible synthetic protocols. In particular, peptides offer a novel route for inorganic synthesis under ambient conditions. Herein, using the previously isolated peptide, ASHQWAWKWE, for Au nanoparticle (AuNP) synthesis, the conditions for preparing TrAuNPls via a one-pot synthetic process of mixing HAuCl₄ and peptides at room temperature were investigated to effectively obtain particles possessing near-infrared absorbance for non-invasive optical diagnosis and phototherapy. By adjusting the peptide concentration, the size and property of TrAuNPls were controlled under neutral pH conditions. The synthesised particles showed potential as photothermal therapeutic agents in vitro. In addition, peptide characterisation using B3 derivatives revealed the importance of the third amino acid histidine in morphological regulation and potential circular Au nanoplates (AuNPl) synthesis with ASEQWAWKWE and ASAQWAWKWE peptides. These findings provide not only an easy and green synthetic method for TrAuNPls and circular AuNPls, but also some insight to help elucidate the regulation of peptide-based nanoparticle synthesis for use in cancer therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biological molecules have received increasing attention as a vehicle to synthesise inorganic materials with specific properties under ambient conditions; particularly, short peptides have the potential to control the synthesis of nanoscale materials with tailored functions. Here, the application of a previously isolated peptide was assessed in synthesising Au nanoparticles containing decahedral and triangular nanoplates with near-infrared absorbance. The size and absorbance peaks of the triangular nanoplates observed were peptide concentration-dependent. In addition, these fine-tuned triangular nanoplates exhibited potential as a phototherapeutic agent. Moreover, the peptide derivatives indicated the possibility of synthesising circular nanoplates. These findings may offer insight into development of new techniques for synthesising functional nanoparticles having biological applications using non-toxic molecules under mild conditions stituted in the original B3 peptide is underlined.

Effects of Different Surfactant Charges on the Formation of Gold Nanoparticles by the LASiS Method

The laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS) method has been widely utilized due to its significant prospects in laser microprocessing of nanomaterials. In this study, the LASiS method with the addition of different surfactant charges (cationic CTAB, nonionic TX-100, and anionic SDS) was used to produce Au NPs. An Nd:YAG laser system at 532 nm excitation with some synthetic parameters, including different laser fluences, ablation times, and surfactant concentrations was performed. The obtained Au NPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential analyzer. The Au NPs exhibited the maximum absorption peak at around 520 nm for all samples. The color of Au NPs was changed from red to reddish by increasing the laser fluence. The surfactant charges also played different roles in the Au NPs’ growth during the synthesis process. The average sizes of Au NPs were found to be 8.5 nm, 5.5 nm, and 15.5 nm with the medium containing CTAB, TX-100, and SDS, respectively. Besides, the different surfactant charges induced different performances to protect Au NPs from agglomeration. Overall, the SDS and CTAB surfactants exhibited higher stability of the Au NPs compared to the Au NPs with TX-100 surfactant.

Simultaneous Grafting Polymerization of Acrylic Acid and Silver Aggregates Formation by Direct Reduction Using γ Radiation onto Silicone Surface and Their Antimicrobial Activity and Biocompatibility

The modification of medical devices is an area that has attracted a lot of attention in recent years; particularly, those developments which search to modify existing devices to render them antimicrobial. Most of these modifications involve at least two stages (modification of the base material with a polymer graft and immobilization of an antimicrobial agent) which are both time-consuming and complicate synthetic procedures; therefore, as an improvement, this project sought to produce antimicrobial silicone (PDMS) in a single step. Using gamma radiation as both an energy source for polymerization initiation and as a source of reducing agents in solution, PDMS was simultaneously grafted with acrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (AAc:EGDMA) while producing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the surface of the material. To obtain reproducible materials, experimental variables such as the effect of the dose, the intensity of radiation, and the concentration of the silver salt were evaluated, finding the optimal reaction conditions to obtain materials with valuable properties. The characterization of the material was performed using electronic microscopy and spectroscopic techniques such as 13C-CPMAS-SS-NMR and FTIR. Finally, these materials demonstrated good antimicrobial activity against S. aureus while retaining good cell viabilities (above 90%) for fibroblasts BALB/3T3.

Current Strategies for Noble Metal Nanoparticle Synthesis

Noble metals have played an integral part in human history for centuries; however, their integration with recent advances in nanotechnology and material sciences have provided new research opportunities in both academia and industry, which has resulted in a new array of advanced applications, including medical ones. Noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) have been of great importance in the field of biomedicine over the past few decades due to their importance in personalized healthcare and diagnostics. In particular, platinum, gold and silver nanoparticles have achieved the most dominant spot in the list, thanks to a very diverse range of industrial applications, including biomedical ones such as antimicrobial and antiviral agents, diagnostics, drug carriers and imaging probes. In particular, their superior resistance to extreme conditions of corrosion and oxidation is highly appreciated. Notably, in the past two decades there has been a tremendous advancement in the development of new strategies of more cost-effective and robust NMNP synthesis methods that provide materials with highly tunable physicochemical, optical and thermal properties, and biochemical functionalities. As a result, new advanced hybrid NMNPs with polymer, graphene, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots and core-shell systems have been developed with even more enhanced physicochemical characteristics that has led to exceptional diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In this review, we aim to summarize current advances in the synthesis of NMNPs (Au, Ag and Pt).

Boosting the sensing properties of resistive-based gas sensors by irradiation techniques: a review

The ongoing need to detect and monitor hazardous, volatile, and flammable gases has led to the use of gas sensors in several fields to improve safety and health issues. Conductometric type gas sensors, which have considerable advantages over other gas sensors, have thrived in numerous gas sensing fields. The ever-present key challenges and requirements of these sensors are to achieve excellent performance, including high sensitivity, good selectivity, low working temperature, and durability. Therefore, tremendous research effort has focused on improving these properties, and various state-of-the-art techniques have been reported. This review article discusses the recent advances and utilization of various irradiation techniques, including electron-beam, microwave, ion-beam, and gamma-ray irradiation, along with their investigation of the effects on the physicochemical properties of pre-synthesized nanomaterials, sensing performances, and related gas sensing mechanisms. A review of the progress on the effects of different irradiation techniques for boosting the sensing properties can contribute to the evolution of highly reliable sensors to assess the environment and health. For researchers, who work on gas sensors, this paper provides information on the current trends on the advances in the novel state-of-art of irradiated materials and their promising application in the sensitive detection of various toxic and VOCs.

Gold Nanoparticle Formation via X-ray Radiolysis Investigated with Time-Resolved X-ray Liquidography

We report the generation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) from the aqueous solution of chloro(2,2',2″-terpyridine)gold(III) ion ([Au(tpy)Cl]²⁺) through X-ray radiolysis and optical excitation at a synchrotron. The original purpose of the experiment was to investigate the photoinduced structural changes of [Au(tpy)Cl]²⁺ upon 400 nm excitation using time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL). Initially, the TRXL data did not show any signal that would suggest structural changes of the solute molecule, but after an induction time, the TRXL data started to show sharp peaks and valleys. In the early phase, AuNPs with two types of morphology, dendrites, and spheres, were formed by the reducing action of hydrated electrons generated by the X-ray radiolysis of water, thereby allowing the detection of TRXL data due to the laser-induced lattice expansion and relaxation of AuNPs. Along with the lattice expansion, the dendritic and spherical AuNPs were transformed into smaller, raspberry-shaped AuNPs of a relatively uniform size via ablation by the optical femtosecond laser pulse used for the TRXL experiment. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the reduction potential of the metal complex relative to the hydration potential of X-ray-generated electrons determines the facile AuNP formation observed for [Au(tpy)Cl]²⁺.

A facile route to transfer Cu nanoparticles to organic medium for better stabilization and improved photocatalytic activity towards N-formylation reaction

Cu nanoparticles were prepared in an aqueous phase by means of a simple reduction-route using sodium borohydride as the reducing agent in the presence of ascorbic acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The hydrosol of the Cu nanoparticles deteriorated within a day. It compelled to initiate a scheme to stabilize the nanoparticles for a long period of time. Phase transfer to organic solvents using Benzyldimethylstearylammonium chloride (BDSAC) as a phase transfer agent was found to be an effective path in this respect. BDSAC performed the dual role of dragging the Cu nanoparticles from water to organic solvent and also acted as a capping agent along with PVP for better stabilization of Cu nanoparticles. The organosol of the Cu nanoparticles exhibited excellent stability and promising catalytic activity towards N-formylation reactions on a number of amine substrates in presence of visible green LED light. The yield and reusability of the catalyst were promising. All the samples were thoroughly characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis of x-rays, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermo gravimetric analysis.

Gold(i)-silver(i)-calix[8]arene complexes, precursors of bimetallic alloyed Au-Ag nanoparticles

In this paper, we report the first synthesis and characterisations of bimetallic gold(i)-silver(i) calix[8]arene complexes. We show that the radiolytic reduction of these complexes leads to the formation of small bimetallic nanoparticles with an alloyed structure, as evidenced by XPS, HR-TEM and STEM/HAADF-EDX measurements.

Chitosan-Stabilized Noble Metal Nanoparticles: Study of their Shape Evolution and Post-Functionalization Properties

Noble metal anisotropic nanostructures have achieved a growing interest in both academic and industrial domains mostly because of their shape-dependent plasmonic properties in the near-infrared region. In this paper, gold and gold-silver anisotropic nanostructures were synthesized in very high shape-yields through a wet, seed-mediated approach based on the use of nearly spherical silver nanoparticles as seeds and chitosan as stabilizing agent. Two chitosans of different origin and molecular properties were selected for the synthetic pathway, leading to the formation of variously sized and shaped end products. In detail, quite homogeneous nanoplatelets of about 25-nm size and 7-nm thickness or nearly spherical, highly porous nanocages of about 50-nm size were obtained, depending on the type of polysaccharide employed. The shape transition towards anisotropic morphologies occurred through a slow, spontaneous process, in which the chitosan nature seemed to play a key role. As expected, both nanoplatelets and nanocages exhibit shape-dependent plasmonic features and surface properties tunable for a variety of application fields. To prove this point, the nanostructures were successfully post-functionalized with poly(10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid) (PCDA), a carboxylic-endowed diacetylene able to anchor on noble metal substrates, to obtain versatile, chromic platforms suitable for sensing and spectroscopic purposes.

Radiation-induced synthesis of tween 80 stabilized silver nanoparticles for antibacterial applications

Recently, Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have become widely applied nanomaterial in human contacting areas such as cosmetics, food and medicine due to their antibacterial property. On the other hand, surfactants are essential ingredient of several industrial and consumer formulations. Based on these important applications, the current research was aimed to carry out the synthesis and characterization of Tween 80 capped silver nanoparticles (T80-AgNPs) using gamma radiation reduction method. Characterization of T80-AgNPs was occurred by using UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR and TEM techniques. UV-Visible spectra showed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak in the range of 420 nm signifying the synthesis of colloidal AgNPs. TEM confirmed the formation of spherical and uniformly distributed AgNPs with average size of 18 nm. XRD analysis illustrated the formation of pure crystalline AgNPs. The FTIR analysis provides evidence for the stabilization of AgNPs by Tween 80. The synthesized T80-AgNPs were evaluated for antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) as gram negative (G -ve) bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as gram positive (G + ve) bacteria and anti-biofilm activity to P. aeruginosa. The results show that T80-AgNPs exhibits excellent antibacterial and antibiofilm activities.

Capping Agent Effect on Pd-Supported Nanoparticles in the Hydrogenation of Furfural

The catalytic performance of a series of 1 wt % Pd/C catalysts prepared by the sol-immobilization method has been studied in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural. The temperature range studied was 25–75 °C, keeping the H2 pressure constant at 5 bar. The effect of the catalyst preparation using different capping agents containing oxygen or nitrogen groups was assessed. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) were chosen. The catalysts were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The characterization data suggest that the different capping agents affected the initial activity of the catalysts by adjusting the available Pd surface sites, without producing a significant change in the Pd particle size. The different activity of the three catalysts followed the trend: PdPVA/C > PdPDDA/C > PdPVP/C. In terms of selectivity to furfuryl alcohol, the opposite trend has been observed: PdPVP/C > PdPDDA/C > PdPVA/C. The different reactivity has been ascribed to the different shielding effect of the three ligands used; they influence the adsorption of the reactant on Pd active sites.

A Review of The Lesser-Studied Microemulsion-Based Synthesis Methodologies Used for Preparing Nanoparticle Systems of The Noble Metals, Os, Re, Ir and Rh

This review focuses on the recent advances in the lesser-studied microemulsion synthesis methodologies of the following noble metal colloid systems (i.e., Os, Re, Ir, and Rh) using either a normal or reverse micelle templating system. The aim is to demonstrate the utility and potential of using this microemulsion-based approach to synthesize these noble metal nanoparticle systems. Firstly, some fundamentals and important factors of the microemulsion synthesis methodology are introduced. Afterward, a review of the investigations on the microemulsion syntheses of Os, Re, Ir, and Rh nanoparticle (NP) systems (in all forms, viz., metallic, oxide, mixed-metal, and discrete molecular complexes) is presented for work published in the last ten years. The chosen noble metals are traditionally very reactive in nanosized dimensions and have a strong tendency to aggregate when prepared via other methods. Also, the particle size and particle size distribution of these colloids can have a significant impact on their catalytic performance. It is shown that the microemulsion approach has the capability to better stabilize these metal colloids and can control the size of the synthesized NPs. This generally leads to smaller particles and higher catalytic activity when they are tested in applications.

An Overview of the Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Radiation Technologies

At a nano-level, optical properties of gold are unique and gave birth to an emerging platform of nanogold-based systems for diverse applications, because gold nanoparticle properties are tunable as a function of size and shape. Within the available techniques for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles, the radiolytic synthesis allows proper control of the nucleation process without the need for reducing agents, in a single step, combined or not with simultaneous sterilization. This review details and summarizes the use of radiation technologies for the synthesis and preparation of gold nanoparticles concerning fundamental aspects, mechanism, current pathways for synthesis and radiation sources, as well as briefly outlines final applications and some toxicity aspects related to nanogold-based systems.

Stabilisation of small mono- and bimetallic gold–silver nanoparticles using calix[8]arene derivatives

We report a facile approach to synthesise small Au–Ag alloyed nanoparticles using a new cali[8]arene derivative as a stabiliser.

Highly Active Multimetallic Palladium Nanoalloys Embedded in Conducting Polymer as Anode Catalyst for Electrooxidation of Ethanol

Fabrication of multimetallic nanocatalysts with controllable composition remains a challenge for the development of low-cost electrocatalysts, and incorporating metal-based catalysts into active carbon nanoarchitectures represents an emerging strategy to improve the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, a facile method developed for Pd nanoparticle (NP)-based multimetallic alloys incorporated on polypyrrole (Ppy) nanofibers by in situ nucleation and growth of NPs using colloidal radiolytic technique is described. Electrochemical measurement suggests that the as-prepared catalysts demonstrate dramatically enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium. The ultrasmall Pd₃₀Pt₂₉Au₄₁/Ppy nanohybrids (∼8 nm) exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity, which is ∼5.5 times higher than that of its monometallic counterparts (12 A/mg Pd, 5 times higher activity compared to that of Pd/C catalyst). Most importantly, the ternary nanocatalyst shows no obvious change in chemical structure and long-term stability, reflected in the 2% loss in forward current density during 1000 cycles. The superior catalytic activity and durability of the nanohybrids have been achieved due to the formation of Pt-Pd-Au heterojunctions with cooperative action of the three metals in the alloy composition, and the strong interactions between the Ppy nanofiber support with the metal NPs. The facile synthetic approach provides a new generation of polymer-supported metal alloy hybrid nanostructures as potential electrocatalysts with superior catalytic activity for fuel cell applications.
