Exploring Biosensors' Scientific Production and Research Patterns: A Bibliometric Analysis

More sustainable biosensor production is growing in importance, allowing for the development of technological solutions for several industries, such as those in the health, chemical, and food sectors. Tracking the latest advancements in biosensors' scientific production is fundamental to determining the opportunities for the future of the biosensing field. This article aims to map scientific production in the biosensors field by running a bibliometric analysis of journal articles registered in the Web of Science database under biosensor-related vital concepts. The key concepts were selected by researchers and biosensor technology developers working on the BioAssembler Horizon project. The findings lead to identifying the scientific and technological knowledge base on biosensing devices and tracking the main scientific organisations developing this technology throughout the COVID-19 period (2019-2023). The institutional origin of the publications characterised the global distribution of related knowledge competencies and research partnerships. These results are discussed, shedding light on the scientific, economic, political, and structural factors that contribute to the formation of a scientific knowledge-based focus on the performance and design of these sensors. Moreover, the lack of scientific ties between the three axes of organisations producing expertise in this area (China, USA, and Russia) points towards the need to find synergies through new mechanisms of co-authorship and collaboration.

A comprehensive bibliometric analysis (2000-2022) on the mapping of knowledge regarding immunotherapeutic treatments for advanced, recurrent, or metastatic cervical cancer

Background

Despite extensive literature on therapeutic strategies for cervical cancer, a bibliometric analysis specifically focused on immunotherapy for advanced, recurrent, or metastatic (A/R/M) cervical malignancies remains unexplored. This study aims to address this gap by presenting a comprehensive overview that includes general characteristics, research focal points, the trajectory of evolution, and current emerging trends in this under-researched area.

Methods

A systematic search was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) to identify articles related to A/R/M cervical cancer published between 2000 and 2022. Citespace and VOS viewer were the primary tools used to identify research focal points, intriguing future patterns, and to evaluate contributions and co-occurrences among authors, institutions, countries, and journals.

Results

A total of 1,001 original articles were identified, involving 6,387 authors from 66 countries and 1,474 institutions, and published across 366 academic journals. The United States contributed most significantly. The most productive researcher was Van der Burg SH from Leiden University Medical Center. The International Journal of Cancer and Cancer Research were identified as the most productive and influential journals, respectively. Analysis of co-citation clusters highlighted 25 clusters, primarily focusing on potential predictive biomarkers, dendritic cell-based tumor vaccines, therapeutic HPV vaccinations, peptide-based cancer vaccines, tumor immune microenvironments, and adoptive cell transfer (ACT). The latest significant trends in A/R/M cervical cancer immunotherapy research included ACT, CAR-T, and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), as revealed by keyword and reference burst detection.

Conclusion

This pioneering study provides a detailed landscape of immunotherapy research in A/R/M cervical cancer. It underscores the importance of global collaboration, enriches our understanding of the immunology of A/R/M cervical cancer, expands on potential beneficiaries of immunotherapy, and explores clinical applications of various therapies, including therapeutic vaccines, adoptive cell transfer, and ICIs, particularly in combination with established treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy.

Recent Progress on Synthesis and Properties of Black Phosphorus and Phosphorene As New-Age Nanomaterials for Water Decontamination

Concerted efforts have been made in recent years to find solutions to water and wastewater treatment challenges and eliminate the difficulties associated with treatment methods. Various techniques are used to ensure the recycling and reuse of water resources. Owing to their excellent chemical, physical, and biological properties, nanomaterials play an important role when integrated into water/wastewater treatment technologies. Black phosphorus (BP) is a potential nanomaterial candidate for water and wastewater treatment, especially its monolayer 2D derivative called phosphorene. Phosphorene offers relative adjustability in its direct bandgap, high charge carrier mobility, and improved in-plane anisotropy compared to the most extensively studied 2D nanomaterials. In this study, we examined the physical and chemical characteristics and synthetic processes of BP and phosphorene. We provide an overview of the latest advancements in the main applications of BP and phosphorene in water/wastewater treatment, which are categorized as photocatalytic, adsorption, and membrane filtration processes. Additionally, we explore the existing difficulties in the integration of BP and phosphorene into water/wastewater treatment technologies and prospects for future research in this field. In summary, this review highlights the ongoing necessity for significant research efforts on the integration of BP and phosphorene in water and wastewater applications.

A bibliometric analysis of cardiotoxicity in cancer radiotherapy

Background

Radiotherapy, a primary treatment for malignant cancer, presents significant clinical challenges globally due to its associated adverse effects, especially with the increased survival rates of cancer patients. Radiation induced heart disease (RIHD) significantly impacts the long-term survival and quality of life of cancer survivors as one of the most devastating consequences. Quite a few studies have been conducted on preclinical and clinical trials of RIHD, showing promising success to some extent. However, no researchers have performed a comprehensive bibliometric study so far.

Objective

This study attempts to gain a deeper understanding of the focal points and patterns in RIHD research and to pinpoint prospective new research avenues using bibliometrics.

Methods

The study group obtained related 1554 publications between 1990 and 2023 on the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) through a scientific search query. Visualization tools like CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized to realize the visual analysis of countries, authors, journals, references and keywords, identifying the hotspots and frontiers in this research field.

Results

After collecting all the data, a total of 1554 documents were categorized and analyzed using the above tools. The annual number of publications in the field of RIHD shows a continuous growth trend. In 2013, there was a significant rise in the number of linked publications, with the majority of authors being from the USA, according to the statistics. Among all the journals, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY BIOLOGY PHYSICS published the most relevant papers. Cluster analysis of the references showed that research on RIHD has focused on breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and Hodgkin's lymphoma (also among the three main clusters), preclinical research, childhood cancer, heart dose, coronary artery disease, etc, which are also hot topics in the field. High-frequency keywords in the analysis include risk factors, cancer types, heart disease, survival, trials, proton therapy (PT), etc.

Conclusion

Future research on RIHD will mostly focus on thoracic cancer, whose exact cause is yet unknown, with preclinical trials playing an important role. Preventing, consistently monitoring, promptly diagnosing, and timely treating are crucial to decreasing RIHD and extending the life expectancy of cancer survivors.

Exploring synthesis and applications of green nanoparticles and the role of nanotechnology in wastewater treatment

Current research endeavours are progressively focussing towards discovering sustainable methods for synthesising eco-friendly materials. In this environment, nanotechnology has emerged as a key frontier, especially in bioremediation and biotechnology. A few areas of nanotechnology including membrane technology, sophisticated oxidation processes, and biosensors. It is possible to create nanoparticles (NPs) via physical, chemical, or biological pathways in a variety of sizes and forms. These days, the investigation of plants as substitutes for NP synthesis methods has drawn a lot of interest. Toxic water contaminants such as methyl blue have been shown to be removed upto 70% by nanoparticles. In our article, we aimed at focussing the environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness towards the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Furthermore it offers a comprehensive thorough summary of green NP synthesis methods which can be distinguished by their ease of use, financial sustainability, and environmentally favourable utilization of plant extracts. This study highlights how green synthesis methods have the potential to transform manufacturing of NPs while adhering to environmental stewardship principles and resource efficiency.

Unraveling the multifaceted mechanisms and untapped potential of activated carbon in remediation of emerging pollutants: A comprehensive review and critical appraisal of advanced techniques

The rapid global expansion of industrialization has resulted in the discharge of a diverse range of hazardous contaminants into the ecosystem, leading to extensive environmental contamination and posing a pressing ecological concern. In this context, activated carbon (AC) has emerged as a highly promising adsorbent, offering significant advantages over conventional forms. For instance, AC has demonstrated remarkable adsorption capabilities, as evidenced by the successful removal of atrazine and ibuprofen using KOH and KOH-CO2-activated char, achieving impressive adsorption rates of 90% and 95%, respectively, at an initial dosage of 10 mg L-1. Moreover, AC can effectively adsorb aromatic compounds through π-π stacking interactions. The aromatic rings in organic molecules can align and interact with the carbon atoms in AC's structure, leading to effective adsorption. In this review, by employing a systematic analysis of recent research findings (majorly from 2015 to 2023), an in-depth exploration of AC's evolution and its wide-ranging applications in adsorbing and remediating emerging pollutants, including dyes, organic contaminants, and hazardous gases and mitigating the adverse impacts of such emerging pollutants on ecosystems have been discussed. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, professionals, and policymakers involved in environmental remediation and pollution control, facilitating the development of sustainable and effective strategies for mitigating the global impact of emerging pollutants.

Mapping the scientific research on bipolar disorder: A scientometric study of hotspots, bursts, and trends

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric illness with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Although the pathological mechanism of and pharmacological interventions for BD have been extensively investigated in preclinical and clinical studies, a scientometric analysis of the developmental trends, interdisciplinary frontiers, and research hotspots in this field has not yet been conducted. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive scientometric review of 55,358 published studies on BD over the past two decades (2002-2021) to identify the most frequently used keywords and explore research hotspots and trajectories. The present findings revealed the main distribution, knowledge structure, topic evolution, and emerging topics of BD research. Analysing the risk factors, pathogenesis, key brain regions, comorbid conditions, and treatment strategies for BD contributed to understanding of the aetiology, progression, and treatment of this disorder. These findings provided substantial support for continued research in this area.

Bibliometrics and knowledge map analysis of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia

Through bibliometric analysis, we aim to comprehensively understand the research dynamics in this field, reveal key scientific research achievements and breakthrough discoveries, and provide valuable reference and guidance for future research directions. Utilizing the Web of Science, we retrieved the literature pertaining to ultrasonics-guided regional anesthesiology (1994-2022). CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for bibliometric and knowledge mapping analysis. Our examination encompassed publication trends, authorship patterns, institutional contributions, frequently occurring keywords, keyword clustering, and emerging terminology trends. Of the 570 papers reviewed, there was a rising trend in publications each year. The main keywords in regional anesthesia were ultrasound guidance, nerve, analgesia, and pain score. Key research areas were regional anesthesia, ultrasound guidance, approach, pain score, and plane block. The U.S. led in research. Stanford University, University of Toronto, and Cork University Hospital were central institutions. Chan V was the top author with 24 articles, while Marhofer P was the most cited at 150 times. Regional anesthesia and pain medicine were the predominant journal in both publications and citations. In conclusion, research in this field consistently grew yearly, and visualization showcased trends in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia. These visuals provided key bibliometric insights, helping researchers further explore and understand this domain.

A Knowledge Map of the Relationship between Diabetes and Stroke: A Bibliometric Analysis Study

INTRODUCTION

The correlation between diabetes and stroke has been studied extensively in epidemiological research. Here, we used bibliometric software to visualize and analyze the literature related to diabetic stroke to provide an overview of the current state of research, hotspots, and future trends in the field.

METHODS

Based on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, we collected studies related to diabetic stroke from 2007 to December 2022. We used CiteSpace (version 6.1.R5), VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica to create knowledge maps and conduct visual analyses on authors, countries, institutions, cited references, and keywords, and Origin for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

We included a total of 5,171 papers on diabetic stroke from the WoSCC database. Overall, there was a steady increase in the number of publications, with a high number of emerging scientists. The USA was the most productive and influential country, which dominated national collaborations. The most common subject category was "neurology." In total, 12 major clusters were generated from the cited references. Keyword analysis showed that keywords related to poststroke injury and treatment are those with the highest burst intensity and latest burst time.

CONCLUSIONS

Individual disease treatment remains a hot topic, and how to balance acute stroke treatment and glycemic control is currently a difficult clinical problem. At the same time, the mechanism of their interaction and the prevention and treatment of related causative factors remain a hot topic of current and future research.

Characterization of global research trends and prospects on platinum-resistant ovarian cancer: a bibliometric analysis

Background

In the last decades, growing attention has been focused on identifying effective therapeutic strategies in the orphan clinical setting of women with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC), generating thousands of original articles. However, the literature involving bibliometric analysis of PROC has not been published yet.

Objective

This study hopes to gain a better understanding of the hot spots and trends in PROC by conducting a bibliometric analysis, as well as identify potential new research directions.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) for PROC-related articles published between 1990 and 2022. CiteSpace 6.1.R2 and VOS viewer 1.6.18.0 were primarily utilized to evaluate the contribution and co-occurrence relationships of various countries and regions, institutes, and journals and to identify research hotspots and promising future trends in this research field.

Results

A total of 3,462 Web of Science publications were retrieved that were published in 671 academic journals by 1135 authors from 844 organizations in 75 countries and regions. The United States was the leading contributor in this field, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was the most productive institution. Gynecologic Oncology was the most productive journal, while the Journal of Clinical Oncology was the most cited and influential. Co-citation cluster labels revealed the characteristics of seven major clusters, including synthetic lethality, salvage treatment, human ovarian-carcinoma cell line, PARP inhibitor resistance, antitumor complexes, folate receptor, and targeting platinum-resistant disease. Keywords and references burst detection indicated that biomarkers, genetic and phenotypic changes, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy were the most recent and most significant aspects of PROC research.

Conclusion

This study conducted a comprehensive review of PROC research using bibliometric and visual techniques. Understanding the immunological landscape of PROC and identifying the population that can benefit from immunotherapy, especially in combination with other therapeutic options (such as chemotherapy and targeted therapy), will continue to be the focal point of research.

Synthesis of Mixed-Phase TiO2-ZrO2 Nanocomposite for Photocatalytic Wastewater Treatment

The use of TiO₂ nanoparticles for photocatalysis for the degradation of organic dyes under UV light for wastewater treatment has been widely studied. However, the photocatalytic characteristics of TiO₂ nanoparticles are inadequate due to their UV light response and higher band gap. In this work, three nanoparticles were synthesized: (i) TiO₂ nanoparticle was synthesized by a sol-gel process. (ii) ZrO₂ was prepared using a solution combustion process and (iii) mixed-phase TiO₂-ZrO₂ nanoparticles were synthesized by a sol-gel process to remove Eosin Yellow (EY) from aqueous solutions in the wastewater. XRD, FTIR, UV-VIS, TEM, and XPS analysis methods were used to examine the properties of the synthesized products. The XRD investigation supported the tetragonal and monoclinic crystal structures of the TiO₂ and ZrO₂ nanoparticles. TEM studies identified that mixed-phase TiO₂-ZrO₂ nanoparticles have the same tetragonal structure as pure mixed-phase. The degradation of Eosin Yellow (EY) was examined using TiO₂, ZrO₂, and mixed-phase TiO₂-ZrO₂ nanoparticles under visible light. The results confirmed that the mixed-phase TiO₂-ZrO₂nanoparticles show a higher level of photocatalytic activity, and the process is accomplished at a high degradation rate in lesser time and at a lower power intensity.

Treatment of textile industry wastewater by using high-performance forward osmosis membrane tailored with alpha-manganese dioxide nanoparticles for fertigation

Forward osmosis (FO) technology has been acknowledged as an energy-efficient cutting-edge water treatment innovation; however, the inefficient performance of polymer-based membranes remains a tailback in the practical utilization of FO. A significant issue in FO is membrane fouling, which negatively influences the flux efficiency, working expenses and membrane life expectancy. Membranes having high water flux and minimum reverse solute flux at low operating pressures are the ideal membranes for this process. This study reports a thin-film nanocomposite (TFNC) membrane for the treatment of textile industry wastewater utilizing fertilizer as draw solution fabricated via the phase inversion process. The chemical structure and morphology of the synthesized manganese oxide (MnO₂) incorporated membrane were studied by various characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, contact angle and gravimetry. The outcomes demonstrated that the nanoparticles were bonded to cellulose acetate polymer via covalent bonds and showed very hydrophilic membrane surface, along with an increased osmotic water flux of 52.5 L.m².h^-1 and reverse salt flux of 10.9 g.m².h^-1, when deionized wastewater and potassium chloride were used as the feed solution and the draw solution, respectively. In this manner, incorporating manganese oxide into the FO membrane may introduce its extraordinary possible application for the production of diluted fertilizer solution with balanced nutrients.

Global trends of research on depression in breast cancer: A bibliometric study based on VOSviewer

Background

Depression is common psychiatric morbidity in breast cancer survivors, seriously affecting patients’ quality of life and mental health. A growing body of research has investigated depression in breast cancer. However, no visual bibliometric analysis was conducted in this field. This study aimed to visualize the literature to identify hotspots and frontiers in research on breast cancer and depression.

Methods

The publications related to depression in breast cancer were retrieved in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1 January 2002 and 17 March 2022. VOSviewer was used to identify co-occurrences and collaborations among countries, institutions, and keywords. CiteSpace was used to detect keyword bursts.

Results

A total of 7,350 articles and reviews related to depression in breast cancer were identified. From 2002 to 2022, the United States and the People’s Republic of China were the most productive countries in this field. The University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Toronto were the most productive institutions in this field. The Journal of Psycho-oncology, followed by Supportive Care in Cancer and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, had the most publications on depression in breast cancer. Of the top 10 journals, seven were from the United States, two were from England, and one was from Germany. Five research hotspots of depression in breast cancer were identified by co-word analysis. Research on post-traumatic growth, spiritual interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, physical activity, and symptom cluster management of depression in breast cancer was relatively mature in the core hotspots. Burst detection of keywords on depression in breast cancer showed the latest hotspots, such as mental health, cancer survivor mortality, and activity.

Conclusion

The research on depression in breast cancer is growing. Attention should be paid to the latest hotspots, such as mental health, cancer survivor, mortality, exercise, and physical activity.

Uncovering Research Trends of Phycobiliproteins Using Bibliometric Approach

Phycobiliproteins are gaining popularity as long-term, high-value natural products which can be alternatives to synthetic products. This study analyzed research trends of phycobiliproteins from 1909 to 2020 using a bibliometric approach based on the Scopus database. The current findings showed that phycobiliprotein is a burgeoning field in terms of publications outputs with "biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology" as the most related and focused subject. The Journal of Applied Phycology was the most productive journal in publishing articles on phycobiliproteins. Although the United States of America (U.S.A.) contributed the most publications on phycobiliproteins, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) is the institution with the largest number of publications. The most productive author on phycobiliproteins was Glazer, Alexander N. (U.S.A.). The U.S.A. and Germany were at the forefront of international collaboration in this field. According to the keyword analysis, the most explored theme was the optimization of microalgae culture parameters and phycobiliproteins extraction methods. The bioactivity properties and extraction of phycobiliproteins were identified as future research priorities. Synechococcus and Arthrospira were the most cited genera. This study serves as an initial step in fortifying the phycobiliproteins market, which is expected to exponentially expand in the future. Moreover, further research and global collaboration are necessary to commercialize phycobiliproteins and increase the consumer acceptability of the pigments and their products.

Photocatalytic activity of silica and silica-silver nanocolloids based on photo-induced formation of reactive oxygen species

Semiconductor nanomaterials are often proposed as photocatalysts for wastewater treatment; silica nanomaterials are still largely unexploited because their photocatalytic performances need improvements, especially under visible light. The present study is a proof-of-concept that amorphous silica colloids once submitted to the proper surface modifications change into an efficient photocatalyst even under low-energy illumination source. For this reason, silica-based colloidal nanomaterials, such as bare (SiO₂ NPs), aminated (NH₂-SiO₂ NPs), and Ag NPs-decorated (Ag-SiO₂ NPs) silica, are tested as photocatalysts for the degradation of 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (9ACA), taken as a model aromatic compound. Interestingly, upon irradiation at 313 nm, NH₂-SiO₂ NPs induce 9ACA degradation, and the effect is even improved when Ag-SiO₂ NPs are used. On the other hand, irradiation at 405 nm activates the plasmon of Ag-SiO₂ NPs photocatalyst, providing a faster and more efficient photodegradation. The photodegradation experiments are also performed under white light illumination, employing a low-intensity fluorescent lamp, confirming satisfying efficiencies. The catalytic effect of SiO₂-based nanoparticles is thought to originate from photo-excitable surface defects and Ag NP plasmons since the catalytic degradation takes place only when the 9ACA is adsorbed on the surface. In addition, the involvement of reactive oxygen species was demonstrated through a scavenger use, obtaining a yield of 17%. In conclusion, this work shows the applicability of silica-based nanoparticles as photocatalysts through the involvement of silica surface defects, confirming that the silica colloids can act as photocatalysts under irradiation with monochromatic and white light. Silica and Ag-decorated silica colloids photosensitize the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species with 17% efficiencies. ROS are able to oxidase aromatic pollutants chemi-adsorbed on the surface of the colloids. Silica-silver nanocomposites present a photocatalytic activity useful to degrade aromatic compounds.

Nano-Adsorbents for Cobalt Removal from Wastewater: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Articles Indexed in the Scopus Database

In this study, a combined technique of bibliometric and social network analysis was applied on research articles, related to the application of nano-adsorbents for cobalt removal from wastewater, published in Scopus database up to 2020. The results revealed that the first relative research article appeared in the Scopus database in the year 2002. The total output of research articles reached 214 in the year 2020. Published research articles of the years 2014–2020, added up to 83.6% of total articles. King Saud University of Saudi Arabia, Chinese Academy of Science, and LUT University of Finland were found to serve as the gatekeepers who control information flows in the network of the most prolific institutions, while cooperation between China, Saudi Arabia, and United States was also identified. On average, the most prolific authors cooperated with five others, while the top 10 cited publications appeared to represent a sparse and weakly interconnected network of co-authors. Graphene oxide was the most prominent nano-adsorbent among the top 10 cited publications, and their respective co-citations network visualization helped in capturing the value of certain citations to the evolution of the research on the topic, putting thus scientific work impact assessment to a different perspective.

A review on metal-based nanoparticles and their toxicity to beneficial soil bacteria and fungi

The unregulated deposition of metal-based nanoparticles in terrestrial ecosystems particularly in agricultural systems has alarmingly threatened the sustainability of the environment and diversity of beneficial microbial populations such as soil bacteria and fungi. This occurs due to the poor treatment of biosolids during wastewater treatment and their application in agricultural fields to enhance the fertility of soils. Continuous deposition, low biodegradability, and longer persistence of metal nanoparticles in soils adversely impact the population of soil beneficial bacteria and fungi. The current literature suggests the toxic outcome of nanoparticle-fungi and nanoparticle-bacteria interactions based on various toxicity endpoints. Therefore, due to the extreme importance of beneficial soil bacteria and fungi for soil fertility and plant growth, this review summarizes the production, application, release of metal nanoparticles in the soil system and their impact on various soil microbes specifically plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, cellular toxicity and impact of nanoparticles on bioactive molecule production by microbes, destructive nanoparticle impact on unicellular, mycorrhizal, and cellulose/lignin degrading fungi. This review also highlights the molecular alterations in fungi and bacteria-induced by nanoparticles and suggests a plausible toxicity mechanism. This review advances the understanding of the nano-toxicity aspect as a common outcome of nanoparticles and fungi/bacteria interactions.

Perspectives of Genetic Damage and Epigenetic Alterations by Hexavalent Chromium: Time Evolution Based on a Bibliometric Analysis

Compounds containing hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] have been classified as Group I human carcinogens in 1990 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, known to induce human lung cancers. To determine the nature of Cr(VI) carcinogenesis, much has been learned about genetic damage and epigenetic alterations. On the basis of bibliometric analysis of the available literature found between 1966 and 2020, the present study investigated the evolution of author keywords; provided a summary of relevant studies focused on populations, animals/plants, or cells; and depicted the co-operation among countries or institutions and research group development. Additionally, multiomics technology and bioinformatics analysis can be a valuable tool for figuring out new biomarkers from different molecular levels like gene, RNA, protein, and metabolite and ascertaining the mechanism pathways of Cr(VI) genotoxicity and carcinogenesis.

Worldwide Scientific Research on Nanotechnology: A Bibliometric Analysis of Tendencies, Funding, and Challenges

The main objective of this investigation was to analyze the scientific production in global research on nanotechnology, integrating scientific production, funding of studies, collaborations between countries, and the most cited publications. The source for obtaining the research papers for our analysis was the Science Citation Index Expanded from the Web of Science. A total of 3546 documents were extracted during the period of 1997-2018. Food science & technology, chemistry (applied and analytical), spectroscopy, and agriculture appeared as the main areas where the articles were published. Most prolific and cited journals were Analytical Methods, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, and Food Chemistry. The co-word analysis showed the relationships between "nanoparticles", which is the central word, and "silver nanoparticles", "delivery systems", and "zinc-nanoparticles". The most productive countries were China (1089 papers), the United States (523), Iran (427), and India (359). The main cited topics deal with the biomedical applications of nanoparticles, its synthesis from plants, and its applications in food science. The results highlight an important collaboration between institutions and countries. The availability of funding for research in nanotechnology was remarkable compared to other fields. The multidisciplinarity of the nanotechnology field is one of the main features as well as one of the central findings.

Ag2S-Sensitized NiO-ZnO Heterostructures with Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity and Acetone Sensing Property

Visible light-driven Ag2S-grafted NiO-ZnO ternary nanocomposites are synthesized using a facile and cost-effective homogeneous precipitation method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties were extensively studied, confirming the formation of ternary nanocomposites. The surface area of the synthesized nanocomposites was calculated by electrochemical double-layer capacitance (C dl). Ternary Ag2S/NiO-ZnO nanocomposites showed excellent visible light photocatalytic property which increases further with the concentration of Ag2S. The maximum photocatalytic activity was shown by 8% Ag2S/NiO-ZnO with a RhB degradation efficiency of 95%. Hydroxyl and superoxide radicals were found to be dominant species for photodegradation of RhB, confirmed by scavenging experiments. It is noteworthy that the recycling experiments demonstrated high stability and recyclable nature of the photocatalyst. Moreover, the electrochemical results indicated that the prepared nanocomposite exhibits remarkable activity toward detection of acetone. The fabricated nanocomposite sensor showed high sensitivity (4.0764 μA mmol L-1 cm-2) and a lower detection limit (0.06 mmol L-1) for the detection of acetone. The enhanced photocatalytic and the sensing property of Ag2S/NiO-ZnO can be attributed to the synergistic effects of strong visible light absorption, excellent charge separation, and remarkable surface properties.

Graphene Composites for Lead Ions Removal from Aqueous Solutions

The indiscriminate disposal of non-biodegradable, heavy metal ionic pollutants from various sources, such as refineries, pulp industries, lead batteries, dyes, and other industrial effluents, into the aquatic environment is highly dangerous to the human health as well as to the environment. Among other heavy metals, lead (Pb(II)) ions are some of the most toxic pollutants generated from both anthropogenic and natural sources in very large amounts. Adsorption is the simplest, efficient and economic water decontamination technology. Hence, nanoadsorbents are a major focus of current research for the effective and selective removal of Pb(II) metal ions from aqueous solution. Nanoadsorbents based on graphene and its derivatives play a major role in the effective removal of toxic Pb(II) metal ions. This paper summarizes the applicability of graphene and functionalized graphene-based composite materials as Pb(II) ions adsorbent from aqueous solutions. In addition, the synthetic routes, adsorption process, conditions, as well as kinetic studies have been reviewed.

Bibliometric Analysis of Algal-Bacterial Symbiosis in Wastewater Treatment

In recent years, the algae-bacteria symbiotic system has played a significant role in the sustainable development of wastewater treatment. With the continuous expansion of research outputs, publications related to wastewater treatment via algal-bacterial consortia appear to be on the rise. Based on SCI-EXPANDED database, this study investigated the research activities and tendencies of algae-bacteria symbiotic wastewater treatment technology by bibliometric method from 1998 to 2017. The results indicated that environmental sciences and ecology was the most productive subject categories, followed by engineering. Bioresource Technology was the most prominent journal in this field with considerable academic influence. China (146), USA (139) and Spain (76) had the largest amount of publications. Among them, USA was in a leading position in international cooperation, with the highest h-index (67) in 79 countries/territories. The cooperation between China and USA was the closest. The cooperative publishing rate of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was 83.33%, but most of them were in cooperation with domestic institutions, while international cooperation was relatively limited. Methane production, biofuel production, and extracellular polymeric substance were future focal frontiers of research, and this field had gradually become a multi-perspective and inter-disciplinary approach combining biological, environmental and energy technologies.

Hierarchical Structure Kaolinite Nanospheres with Remarkably Enhanced Adsorption Properties for Methylene Blue

Kaolinite nanospheres with hierarchical structures were synthesized via dehydration-rehydration technique through calcined-hydrothermal route. The microstructure of samples were characterized and analyzed by diverse techniques. The results show that after hydrothermal treatment, the layered pseudo-hexagonal kaolinite particles transformed to hierarchical structure nanospheres. The hierarchical structures exhibit large specific surface area of 157.1 m² g^-1 and narrow mesoporous size distribution. The adsorption properties of kaolinite nanospheres were systematically investigated by the removal of methylene blue (MB) from water. It was found that the nanospheres can rapidly adsorb MB with a higher adsorption capacity (184.9 mg/g), and adsorption data followed Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorbent can be regenerated by washing with methanol-HCl solution and shown removal efficiency of more than 95% up to 4 cycles.
