Risk of pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes after maternal A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza: a Norwegian population-based cohort study

Implication of viruses in the etiology of preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is one of the most common disorders that poses threat to both mothers and neonates and a major contributor to perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Viral infection during pregnancy is not typically considered to cause preeclampsia; however, syndromic nature of preeclampsia etiology and the immunomodulatory effects of viral infections suggest that microbes could trigger a subset of preeclampsia. Notably, SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia. Herein, we review the potential role of viral infections in this great obstetrical syndrome. According to in vitro and in vivo experimental studies, viral infections can cause preeclampsia by introducing poor placentation, syncytiotrophoblast stress, and/or maternal systemic inflammation, which are all known to play a critical role in the development of preeclampsia. Moreover, clinical and experimental investigations have suggested a link between several viruses and the onset of preeclampsia via multiple pathways. However, the results of experimental and clinical research are not always consistent. Therefore, future studies should investigate the causal link between viral infections and preeclampsia to elucidate the mechanism behind this relationship and the etiology of preeclampsia itself.

Maternal immunization with distinct influenza vaccine platforms elicits unique antibody profiles that impact the protection of offspring

Pregnant women and infants are considered high-risk groups for increased influenza disease severity. While influenza virus vaccines are recommended during pregnancy, infants cannot be vaccinated until at least six months of age. Passive transfer of maternal antibodies (matAbs) becomes vital for the infant's protection. Here, we employed an ultrasound-based timed-pregnancy murine model and examined matAb responses to distinct influenza vaccine platforms and influenza A virus (IAV) infection in dams and their offspring. We demonstrate vaccinating dams with a live-attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) vaccine or recombinant hemagglutinin (rHA) proteins administered with adjuvant resulted in enhanced and long-lasting immunity and protection from influenza in offspring. In contrast, a trivalent split-inactivated vaccine (TIV) afforded limited protection in our model. By cross-fostering pups, we show the timing of antibody transfer from vaccinated dams to their offspring (prenatal versus postnatal) can shape the antibody profile depending on the vaccine platform. Our studies provide information on how distinct influenza vaccines lead to immunogenicity and efficacy during pregnancy, impact the protection of their offspring, and detail roles for IgG1 and IgG2c in the development of vaccine administration during pregnancy that stimulate and measure expression of both antibody subclasses.

Current tobacco use and SARS-CoV-2 infection in two Norwegian population-based cohorts

BACKGROUND

Clear evidence of an increased risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection among smokers has not been established. We aimed to investigate associations between cigarette smoking or use of snus (snuff) and other nicotine-containing products and a positive SARS-CoV-2 test, taking test behavior into account.

METHODS

Current tobacco use and testing behavior during the pandemic were recorded by adult participants from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study and The Norwegian Influenza Pregnancy Cohort. SARS-CoV-2 infection status was obtained from The Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases (MSIS) in May 2021 (n = 78,860) and antibody measurements (n = 5581). We used logistic regression models stratified by gender and adjusted for age, education, region, number of household members, and work situation.

RESULTS

Snus use was more common among men (26%) than women (9%) and more prevalent than cigarette smoking. We found no clear associations between cigarette smoking or snus and a COVID-19 diagnosis among men. Associations among women were conflicting, indicating that cigarette smoke was negatively associated with a diagnosis (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.35, 0.75), while no association was found for snus use (OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.86, 1.34). Compared with non-users of tobacco, both cigarette smokers and snus users had increased odds of being tested for SARS-CoV-2.

CONCLUSIONS

Cigarette smoking, but not snus use, was negatively associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in women. The lack of an association between snus use and SARS-CoV-2 infection in this population with prevalent snus use does not support the hypothesis of a protective effect of nicotine.

Tropism and Infectivity of Pandemic Influenza A H1N1/09 Virus in the Human Placenta

Influenza virus infection in pregnant women may put the fetus at higher risk; however, to date, there has been no detailed research about the expression of influenza virus receptors in the human placenta. We employed the lectin staining technique, which is a classic influenza virus receptor research method for studying the distribution of viral receptors in the human placenta. In addition, we examined the susceptibility of the human placenta to H1N1/09, by detecting viral proteins and RNA at different time points post-infection. We found that the human placenta expressed both avian and human influenza A virus receptors (α-2, 3-linked sialic acid and α-2, 6-linked sialic acid). In addition, H1N1/09 did not only infect the human placenta, but also replicated and was released into the culture media. We concluded that the human placenta is susceptible to the 2009 influenza A virus (H1N1/09) infection, and that particular attention should be paid to shielding pregnant women from infection during influenza season.

Severe maternal infectious morbidity during the second half of pregnancy is an independent risk factor for a small for gestational age neonate

OBJECTIVE

The effect of severe maternal infectious morbidity on fetal growth during the second half of pregnancy is under debate. Preliminary evidence suggests that such association may be plausible. The objectives of this study were to determine: 1) The association between severe maternal infectious morbidity and adverse pregnancy outcome; and 2) The effect of maternal infection during pregnancy on fetal growth.

STUDY DESIGN

This retrospective population - based cohort study included 4771 women who gave birth at our medical center during the study period. Parturients were allocated into two groups: 1) patients with severe maternal infection during the second half of pregnancy (n = 368); and 2) control group comprised of normal pregnant women who were matched to the study group by maternal age, gravidity and parity (n = 4403).

RESULTS

The severe maternal infection group included women with pneumonia (n = 198), pyelonephritis (n = 131), and viral pneumonitis (n = 39). In comparison to the normal patients group: 1) having had pneumonia during the second half of pregnancy was associated with increased rates of fetal growth restriction, placental abruption, fetal demise (P < 0.001, for all comparisons) and preeclampsia (P = 0.041); 2) Pyelonephritis during the second half of gestation was associated with higher rates of fetal growth restriction (P < 0.001), placental abruption (P = 0.006) and labor induction (P = 0.039). As a group, women with severe maternal infection had higher rates of small for gestational age neonates compared to normal parturients (P < 0.001). Among women with infections, only those who had pyelonephritis (P = 0.032) or pneumonia (P = 0.008), had a higher rate of small for gestational age neonates than those in the control group. After adjustment to confounding factors, maternal infection (OR = 1.42, 95% CI 1.085-1.85) and previous delivery of a small for gestational age neonate (OR = 2.54, 95% CI 2.02-3.19), were independent risk factors for the delivery of a small for gestational age neonate.

CONCLUSION

Severe maternal infectious morbidity during the second half of pregnancy is an independent risk factor for the delivery of a small for gestational age neonate and is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Both, pneumonia and pyelonephritis, during the second half of gestation affect fetal growth and are related to higher rates of small for gestational age neonates.

SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and risk of preeclampsia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

To examine the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and the risk for preeclampsia.

DATA SOURCES

MEDLINE, Embase, POPLINE, CINAHL, LILACS, and the World Health Organization COVID-19, Chinese, and preprint databases (all from December 1, 2019, to May 31, 2021). Google Scholar, bibliographies, and conference proceedings were also searched.

STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Observational studies that assessed the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and preeclampsia and that reported unadjusted and/or adjusted risk estimates and 95% confidence intervals or data to calculate them.

STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS

The primary outcome was preeclampsia. Secondary outcomes included preeclampsia with severe features, preeclampsia without severe features, eclampsia, and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome. Two reviewers independently reviewed studies for inclusion, assessed their risk of bias, and extracted data. Pooled unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, and 95% prediction interval were calculated. Heterogeneity was quantified using the І2 statistic, for which І2≥30% indicated substantial heterogeneity. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness of the overall findings.

RESULTS

A total of 28 studies comprising 790,954 pregnant women, among which 15,524 were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection, met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis of unadjusted odds ratios showed that the odds of developing preeclampsia were significantly higher among pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection than among those without SARS-CoV-2 infection (7.0% vs 4.8%; pooled odds ratio, 1.62; 95% confidence interval, 1.45-1.82; P<.00001; І2=17%; 26 studies; 95% prediction interval of the odds ratio, 1.28-2.05). The meta-analysis of adjusted odds ratios also showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy was associated with a significant increase in the odds of preeclampsia (pooled odds ratio, 1.58; 95% confidence interval, 1.39-1.80; P<.0001; І2=0%; 11 studies). There was a statistically significant increase in the odds of preeclampsia with severe features (odds ratio, 1.76; 95% confidence interval, 1.18-2.63; І2=58%; 7 studies), eclampsia (odds ratio, 1.97; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-3.84; І2=0%, 3 studies), and HELLP syndrome (odds ratio, 2.10; 95% confidence interval, 1.48-2.97; 1 study) among pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection when compared to those without the infection. Overall, the direction and magnitude of the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy on preeclampsia was consistent across most prespecified subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Both asymptomatic and symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections significantly increased the odds of developing preeclampsial; however, it was higher among patients with symptomatic illness (odds ratio, 2.11; 95% confidence interval, 1.59-2.81) than among those with asymptomatic illness (odds ratio, 1.59; 95% confidence interval, 1.21-2.10).

CONCLUSION

SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy is associated with higher odds of preeclampsia.

Serological Responses to Influenza Vaccination during Pregnancy

Pregnant women, newborns, and infants under six months old are at the highest risk of developing severe and even fatal influenza. This risk is compounded by the inability to vaccinate infants under six months, highlighting the importance of vertically transferred immunity. This review identifies novel insights that have emerged from recent studies using animal models of pregnancy and vaccination. We also discuss the knowledge obtained using existing clinical trials that have evaluated influenza-specific serological responses in pregnant women and how these responses may impact early life immunity. We delineate the mechanisms involved in transferring specific maternal antibodies and discuss the consequences for early life immunity. Most importantly, we highlight the need for continued research using pregnant animal models and the inclusion of pregnant women, a commonly neglected population, when evaluating novel vaccine platforms to better serve and treat communicable diseases.

Lessons learned from the A (H1N1) influenza pandemic

Influenza in pregnancy is a common condition that is associated with an increased risk of hospital admission. Women with comorbidities are at a greater risk of severe outcomes. There are substantial gaps in our knowledge of the impact of severe influenza on perinatal outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, but preterm birth, fetal death, infant respiratory infection and hospital admission may be increased. Thus, influenza is a major burden on health services. Immunisation is cost-effective, safe and effective in preventing influenza in pregnant women and their infants but policies and uptake vary worldwide. Operational challenges and concern over the safety, efficacy and necessity of immunisation are common, and there is a lack of evidence on how to overcome these barriers. This review identifies learning points that are relevant to the current coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic through describing the epidemiology and impact of seasonal and A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza in pregnancy, alongside the effectiveness and use of immunisation.

The effect of influenza virus infection on pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

BACKGROUND

Adverse pregnancy outcomes are risk factors for neonatal mortality and morbidity. While some studies have demonstrated notable associations between influenza and adverse pregnancy outcomes, the findings have contrasted with other studies. This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effect of influenza infection on pregnancy outcomes.

METHODS

We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science from inception to 4 November 2020. Relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using random-effects or fixed-effects models.

RESULTS

A total of 17 studies involving 2,351,204 participants were included. Influenza infection increased the risk of stillbirth (RR = 3.62, 95% CI: 1.60-8.20), with no significant effect on preterm birth (RR = 1.17, 95%CI: 0.95-1.45), fetal death (RR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.73-1.18), small for gestational age (SGA) (RR = 1.10, 95%CI: 0.98-1.24) and low birth weight (LBW) (RR = 1.88, 95%CI: 0.46-7.66). In a subgroup analysis of LBW, the association was evident in studies conducted during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic (RR = 2.28, 95%CI: 1.81-2.87), with no evidence of an association in pre-pandemic or post-pandemic studies.

CONCLUSIONS

Influenza virus infection was associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, but its effect on preterm birth, fetal death, SGA and LBW is still uncertain.

Cost-effectiveness of influenza vaccination during pregnancy

OBJECTIVE

To assess the cost-effectiveness of influenza vaccination for all pregnant patients in the United States.

METHODS

We designed a cost-effectiveness model to compare outcomes and costs in pregnant patients who received the inactivated, trivalent influenza vaccine to those who did not. We used a theoretical cohort of 4 million patients, the number of individuals giving birth in the United States per year. We assumed that H1N1 and A or B type influenza were of equal incidence based on seasonal variation from the past ten years. Our outcomes include acquiring H1N1, acquiring A or B type influenza, maternal death, stillbirth, infant death, preterm birth, and cerebral palsy in addition to cost and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). Probabilities were derived from the literature and QALYs generated at a discount rate of 3%. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness of our model.

RESULTS

In our theoretical cohort of 4 million pregnant patients, the influenza vaccination strategy was associated with 1632 fewer stillbirths (24,332 in the vaccine strategy vs. 25,964 in the no vaccine strategy), 120 fewer maternal deaths (284 vs. 404), 340 fewer infant deaths (5608 vs. 5948), 32,856 fewer preterm births (403,896 vs. 436,752), and 641 fewer cases of moderate cerebral palsy (12,388 vs. 13,029). Additionally, the vaccination strategy corresponded to savings of $3.7 billion ($63.3 billion vs. $67.0 billion) and increased QALYs of 81,696 (226,852,076 vs 226,770,380). Therefore, it was considered a dominant strategy. Univariate sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the vaccine is cost saving until vaccine cost passes $900, far above the current cost of $12.16. In addition, we used sensitivity analysis to vary seasonal proportions of H1N1 to A or B type influenza. The vaccine was cost saving and increased QALYs for any proportion of H1N1 to A or B type influenza including when H1N1 was absent.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrate that in a cohort of 4 million patients, the influenza vaccine may save $3.7 billion per year, improve maternal and infant outcomes, and reduce morbidity and mortality. Our study provides further evidence that providers should strongly recommend that pregnant patients receive their annual influenza vaccine.

Incidence, risk factors and impact of seasonal influenza in pregnancy: A national cohort study

BACKGROUND

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to severe infection from influenza resulting in poor neonatal outcomes. The majority of evidence relates to pandemic 2009 A/H1N1 influenza. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics and outcomes of pregnant women hospitalised with seasonal influenza.

METHODS

This national, prospective, observational cohort study used the UK Obstetric Surveillance System (UKOSS) to identify all pregnant women admitted to hospital between 01/11/2016 and 31/10/2018 with laboratory confirmed influenza at any gestation and up to two days after giving birth. These were compared to women admitted to give birth that did not have influenza. Baseline characteristics, immunization status, maternal and perinatal outcomes were compared.

RESULTS

There were 405 women admitted to hospital with laboratory confirmed influenza in pregnancy: 2.7 per 10,000 maternities. Compared to 694 comparison women, women with influenza were less likely to be professionally employed (aOR 0.59, 95%CI 0.39-0.89) or immunised in the relevant season (aOR 0·59, 0·39-0·89) and more likely to have asthma (aOR 2.42, 1.30-4.49) or have had a previous pregnancy complication (aOR 2·47, 1·33-4·61). They were more likely to be admitted to intensive care (aOR 21.3, 2.78-163.1) and to have a cesarean birth (aOR 1·42, 1·02-1.98). Their babies were more likely to be admitted to neonatal intensive care (aOR 1.86, 1·01-3·42).

CONCLUSIONS

Immunization reduces the risk of hospitalisation with influenza in pregnancy which is associated with increased risk of morbidity for both the mother and baby. There is a continued need to increase awareness of safety and effectiveness of immunization in pregnancy and provision within antenatal care settings, especially for high-risk groups.

Efficacy, duration of protection, birth outcomes, and infant growth associated with influenza vaccination in pregnancy: a pooled analysis of three randomised controlled trials

Background

Maternal influenza immunisation can reduce morbidity and mortality associated with influenza infection in pregnant women and young infants. We aimed to determine the vaccine efficacy of maternal influenza immunisation against maternal and infant PCR-confirmed influenza, duration of protection, and the effect of gestational age at vaccination on vaccine efficacy, birth outcomes, and infant growth up to 6 months of age.

Methods

We did a pooled analysis of three randomised controlled trials done in Nepal (2011–2014), Mali (2011–2014), and South Africa (2011–2013). Pregnant women, gestational age 17–34 weeks in Nepal, 28 weeks or more in Mali, and 20–36 weeks in South Africa, were enrolled. Women were randomly assigned 1:1 to a study group, in which they received trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) in all three trials, or a control group, in which they received saline placebo in Nepal and South Africa or quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine in Mali. Enrolment at all sites was complete by April 24, 2013. Infants and women were assessed for respiratory illness, and samples from those that met the case definition were tested for influenza by PCR testing. Growth measurements, including length and weight, were obtained at birth at all sites, at 24 weeks in South Africa, and at 6 months in Nepal and Mali. The three trials are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, numbers NCT01430689, NCT01034254, and NCT02465190.

Findings

10 002 women and 9800 liveborn infants were included. Pooled efficacy of maternal vaccination to prevent infant PCR-confirmed influenza up to 6 months of age was 35% (95% CI 19 to 47). The pooled estimate was 56% (28 to 73) within the first 2 months of life, 39% (11 to 58) between 2 and 4 months, and 19% (–9 to 40) between 4 and 6 months. In women, from enrolment during pregnancy to the end of follow-up at 6 months postpartum, the vaccine was 50% (95% CI 32–63) efficacious against PCR-confirmed influenza. Efficacy was 42% (12 to 61) during pregnancy and 60% (36 to 75) postpartum. In women vaccinated before 29 weeks gestational age, the estimated efficacy was 30% (–2 to 52), and in women vaccinated at or after 29 weeks, efficacy was 71% (50 to 83). Efficacy was similar in infants born to mothers vaccinated before or after 29 weeks gestation (34% [95% CI 12 to 51] vs 35% [11 to 52]). There was no overall association between maternal vaccination and low birthweight, stillbirth, preterm birth, and small for gestational age. At 6 months of age, the intervention and control groups were similar in terms of underweight (weight-for-age), stunted (length-for-age), and wasted (weight-for-length). Median centile change from birth to 6 months of age was similar between the intervention and the control groups for both weight and length.

Interpretation

The assessment of efficacy for women vaccinated before 29 weeks gestational age might have been underpowered, because the point estimate suggests that there might be efficacy despite wide CIs. Estimates of efficacy against PCR-confirmed influenza and safety in terms of adverse birth outcomes should be incorporated into any further consideration of maternal influenza immunisation recommendations.

Impact of influenza virus during pregnancy: from disease severity to vaccine efficacy

Pregnant women are among the individuals at the highest risk for severe influenza virus infection. Infection of the mother during pregnancy increases the probability of adverse fetal outcomes such as small for gestational age, preterm birth and fetal death. Animal models of syngeneic and allogeneic mating can recapitulate the increased disease severity observed in pregnant women and are used to define the mechanism(s) of that increased severity. This review focuses on influenza A virus pathogenesis, the unique immunological landscape during pregnancy, the impact of maternal influenza virus infection on the fetus and the immune responses at the maternal–fetal interface. Finally, we summarize the importance of immunization and antiviral treatment in this population and highlight issues that warrant further investigation.

Effects of COVID-19 Infection during Pregnancy and Neonatal Prognosis: What Is the Evidence?

BACKGROUND

This study's aims are to assess the current evidence presented in the literature regarding the potential risks of COVID-19 infection among pregnant women and consequent fetal transmission.

METHODS

a systematic literature review assessing papers published in the most comprehensive databases in the field of health intended to answer the question, "What are the effects of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy, and what is the neonatal prognosis?"

RESULTS

49 papers published in 2020 were eligible, presenting low levels of evidence. A total of 755 pregnant women and 598 infants were assessed; more than half of pregnant women had C-sections (379/65%). Only 493 (82%) infants were tested for SARS-CoV-2, nine (2%) of whom tested positive. There is, however, no evidence of vertical transmission based on what has been assessed so far, considering there are knowledge gaps concerning the care provided during and after delivery, as well as a lack of suitable biological samples for testing SARS-CoV-2.

CONCLUSIONS

We cannot rule out potential worsening of the clinical conditions of pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2, whether the infection is associated with comorbidities or not, due to the occurrence of respiratory disorders, cardiac rhythm disturbances, and acid-base imbalance, among others. We recommend relentless monitoring of all pregnant women in addition to testing them before delivery or the first contact with newborns.

Detection of anti-NS1 antibodies after pandemic influenza exposure: Evaluation of a serological method for distinguishing H1N1pdm09 infected from vaccinated cases

Background

Reliable exposure information is crucial for assessing health outcomes of influenza infection and vaccination. Current serological methods are unable to distinguish between anti‐hemagglutinin (HA) antibodies induced by infection or vaccination.

Objectives

We aimed to explore an alternative method for differentiating influenza infection and vaccination.

Methods

Sera from animals inoculated with influenza viruses or purified H1N1pdm09 HA were obtained. Human samples were selected from a pregnancy cohort established during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Unvaccinated, laboratory‐confirmed cases (N = 18), vaccinated cases without influenza‐like‐illness (N = 18) and uninfected, unvaccinated controls (N = 18) were identified based on exposure data from questionnaires, national registries and maternal hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titres at delivery. Animal and human samples were tested for antibodies against the non‐structural protein 1 (NS1) and HA from H1N1pdm09, using a Luciferase Immunoprecipitation System (LIPS).

Results

Anti‐NS1 H1N1pdm09 antibodies were detected in sera from experimentally infected, but not from vaccinated, animals. Anti‐HA H1N1pdm09 antibodies were detectable after either of these exposures. In human samples, 28% of individuals with laboratory‐confirmed influenza were seropositive for H1N1pdm09 NS1, whereas vaccinated cases and controls were seronegative. There was a trend for H1N1pdm09 NS1 seropositive cases reporting more severe and longer duration of symptomatic illness than seronegative cases. Anti‐HA H1N1pdm09 antibodies were detected in all cases and in 61% of controls.

Conclusions

The LIPS method could differentiate between sera from experimentally infected and vaccinated animals. However, in human samples obtained more than 6 months after the pandemic, LIPS was specific, but not sufficiently sensitive for ascertaining cases by exposure.

Vaccinating pregnant women against influenza needs to be a priority for all countries: An expert commentary

BACKGROUND

In 2012, the World Health Organization recommended influenza vaccination for all pregnant women worldwide and the prioritisation of pregnant women in national influenza vaccination programmes. Nevertheless, vaccination rates in pregnant women often remain much lower than national targets.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the benefits and risks associated with influenza infection and vaccination during pregnancy, and to consider obstacles that work against influenza vaccine uptake during pregnancy.

RESULTS

There is strong evidence that maternal and foetal outcomes can be compromised if women develop influenza infections during pregnancy. Influenza vaccines have been administered to millions of pregnant women and have demonstrated benefits in terms of disease prevention in mothers and their infants. There is a consensus amongst several recommending authorities that influenza vaccines may be safely administered during all stages of pregnancy. Healthcare professionals are recognised as the most important influencers of vaccine uptake, being well placed to recommend vaccination and directly address safety concerns.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite data supporting the value of influenza vaccination during pregnancy, vaccine uptake remains low globally. Low uptake appears to be largely due to ineffective communication with pregnant women about the risks and benefits of influenza vaccination. A graphical abstract is available online.
