Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of facilitated tucking and white noise on stress and sleep in neonates receiving nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). METHOD This study was conducted as a randomised controlled experimental study of neonates receiving nasal CPAP in neonatal intensive care units. The study sample consisted of 108 newborns (facilitated tucking (n = 36), white noise (n = 36) and control (n = 36)) receiving nasal CPAP support in the NICU. The neonates' sleep parameters were recorded by actigraphy for 24 h. Data were collected using the Neonatal Descriptive Information Form, the Sleep Tracking Form and the Neonatal Stress Scale. Percentage, mean, chi-squared and one-way ANOVA were used for data analysis. RESULTS It was found that 50.9% of the newborns were female, their mean gestational age was 33.54 ± 3.38, their mean height was 43.56 ± 5.12, and their mean weight was 2139.23 ± 827.82. The total sleep time of the neonates in the facilitated tucking and white noise group increased by 3 h, their sleep efficiency increased by 20% and their mean stress scores decreased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Facilitated tucking and white noise each showed a similar improvement in sleep duration and sleep efficiency and a reduction in stress scores in neonates receiving nasal CPAP. Close monitoring of sleep in this population and supportive care practices are recommended. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The findings of this study may help to reduce sleep problems and stress levels in the clinical care of neonates in the NICU through developmental nursing practices.

Abstract
The effects of preterm birth, neonatal morbidities and environmental influences on infant sleep development is an important yet under-researched topic, with little known about normative sleep for infants born sick or preterm. The aim of this prospective, observational longitudinal study was to evaluate maternal perceptions and degree of bother with infant sleep behaviours and feeding outcomes across the first 9 months after discharge for sick/preterm infants cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and for healthy term-born infants. This paper reports outcomes for the sick/preterm cohort (I = 94) that were recruited from two NICUs in Perth, Western Australia. Total bother scores were on average 20.2% higher at 9 months than at two weeks post-discharge (p < 0.001). Increased night waking frequency, evening settling duration and crying duration were all positively associated with total bother scores. Maternal confidence scores were negatively associated with maternal bother scores; with each unit increase in confidence, maternal bother decreased by 8.5% (p < 0.001). Covariates such as birth gestation, breastfeeding status and multiple births were not associated with maternal bother. Families may benefit from additional support when experiencing increased night waking frequency and crying and settling durations in the first 9 months after discharge from NICU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adequate sleep and exercise are important components of the human lifestyle. Paying attention to these two factors is very important to improve the condition of children with type 1 diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of exercise on sleep habits in children with type 1 diabetes. MATERIAL & METHODS 62 children with type 1 diabetes participated in this clinical trial. They will be divided into the intervention group (31) and the control group (31). Sleep habits were measured using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). All children's parents completed the CSHQ. The intervention for the experimental group consisted of 8 weeks of regular exercise program. The exercise program was prepared as an educational video and provided to parents. Paired sample t-test and ANCOVA test were used with SPSS 23. RESULTS 62 children with an average age of 9.32 ± 2.02 were studied. Fifty-four and eight% of the children were girls and the rest were boys. The analysis of the variance test showed a significant difference (F = 144.72, P ≤ 0.01) between the average score of the sleep habits of the control group (62.45 ± 5.12) and the experimental group (47.06 ± 4.39). CONCLUSION Sleep habits in the experimental group improved after 8 weeks of exercise training using educational videos. Exercise as a non-pharmacological treatment is an effective way to manage diabetes and improve sleep quality in diabetic children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To use objective quantification of polysomnographic (PSG) parameters in premature infants to define the severity and nature of obstructions (partial hypopnea vs. total obstruction), along with the impact on sleep fragmentation and oxygenation patterns. METHODS Retrospective comparison of PSG features in 207 infants (<12 months) referred for sleep disordered breathing. Our study groups included term (> = 37 weeks GA, n = 162) and premature (<37 weeks GA, n = 45) infants. Groups were compared for OSA sleep-stage-specific apnea hypopnea (AHI) indexes (REM and NREM), hypopnea indexes (HI), obstructive apnea indexes (OI) and arousal indexes. Oxygenation was assessed as % of time with SpO2 < 90%, nadir with apneic events and frequency of SpO2 desaturations (>3%) calculated as stage-specific O2 desaturation indexes. RESULTS Overall, premature infants had greater apnea severity (AHI premature 13.9/h vs. Term 7.9/h, p = 0.018). Additional analyses showed that the primary difference between premature and term infants is seen in the group with partial obstructions (HI index) and severe OSA (OAHI> = 10/h). Premature infants also had greater arousal indexes (premature 13.8/h vs. term 10.5/h, p = 0.003). Although the percentage of time <90% at night and the median SpO2 nadir during apneic events was similar in premature vs. term, O2 desaturation indexes were greater in premature infants (10.3/h in term vs. 18.3/h in prematurity, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Children born premature have an OSA phenotype in infancy characterized by greater severity mostly due to frequent partial obstructions (hypopneas) rather than full obstructions (obstructive apnea). Prematurity is also associated with more intermittent hypoxemia and sleep fragmentation. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 3 Laryngoscope, 134:1933-1938, 2024.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the following: (i) sleep characteristics in preterm infants at 9-20 weeks of corrected age, and (ii) differences in early spontaneous movements and developmental functioning results between the groups based on some sleep characteristics. METHODS Seventy-four preterm infants (36 female) were included. Sleep characteristics were assessed according to the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ). The infants were divided into two groups based on total sleep duration: less than 12 h (38 infants), and 12 h and more (36 infants). Video recordings were made for the General Movements Assessment (GMA) and evaluated using the Motor Optimality Score for 3- to 5-Month-Old-Infants-Revised (MOS). Cognitive, language, and motor development were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III). RESULTS The total sleep duration of all preterm infants (mean ± SD) was 11.8 ± 3.3 h. Infants who had absent fidgety movements slept less than 12 h, and fidgety movements differed between the groups (p = 0.012). Infants who slept 12 h or more had significantly higher MOS (p = 0.041), cognitive (p = 0.002), language (p < 0.001), and motor (p = 0.002) development results. Infants who snored had lower MOS (p = 0.001), cognitive (p = 0.004), language (p = 0.002), and motor (p = 0.001) development results. Infants with fewer than three nocturnal awakenings had significantly higher Bayley-III cognitive (p = 0.007), language (p = 0.032), and motor (p = 0.005) domain results. Prone and supine sleeping positions showed higher motor domain results than lateral positions (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Sleep in preterm infants might be a key factor in early developmental functioning processes and nervous system integrity. Even in the first months of life, there are substantial differences in cognitive, language, and motor development in association with sleep characteristics.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The high incidences of both the developmental delay among young children and the mental health problems of their caregivers are major threats to public health in low-income and middle-income countries. Parental training interventions during early childhood have been shown to benefit early development, yet evidence on strategies to promote caregiver mental health remains limited. In addition, evidence on the optimal design of scalable interventions that integrate early child development and maternal mental health components is scarce. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We design a single-blind, factorial, cluster-randomised controlled, superiority trial that will be delivered and supervised by local agents of the All China Women's Federation (ACWF), the nationwide, government-sponsored social protection organisation that aims to safeguard the rights and interests of women and children. We randomise 125 villages in rural China into four arms: (1) a parenting stimulation arm; (2) a caregiver mental health arm; (3) a combined parenting stimulation and caregiver mental health arm and (4) a pure control arm. Caregivers and their children (aged 6-24 months at the time of baseline data collection) are selected and invited to participate in the 12-month-long study. The parenting stimulation intervention consists of weekly, one-on-one training sessions that follow a loose adaptation of the Reach Up and Learn curriculum. The caregiver mental health intervention is comprised of fortnightly group activities based on an adaptation of the Thinking Healthy curriculum from the WHO. Primary outcomes include measures of child development and caregiver mental health. Secondary outcomes include a comprehensive set of physical, psychological and behavioural outcomes. This protocol describes the design and evaluation plan for this programme. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study received approval from the Institutional Review Board of Stanford University (IRB Protocol #63680) and the Institutional Review Board of the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Informed oral consent will be obtained from all caregivers for their own and their child's participation in the study. The full protocol will be publicly available in an open-access format. The study findings will be published in economics, medical and public health journals, as well as Chinese or English policy briefs. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Scientific scrutiny has proved the safety and benefits of caffeine to treat apnoea of prematurity (AOP). However, there is no consensus on the effects of this treatment on sleep, especially considering the key role of adenosine and early brain development for sleep maturation. We systematically reviewed studies with sleep as a primary and/or secondary outcome or any mention of sleep parameters in the context of caffeine treatment for AOP. METHODS We performed a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science and the Virtual Health Library from inception to 7 September 2022 to identify studies investigating the short- and long-term effects of caffeine to treat AOP on sleep parameters. We used the PIC strategy considering preterm infants as the Population, caffeine for apnoea as the Intervention and no or other intervention other than caffeine as the Comparison. We registered the protocol on PROSPERO (CRD42021282536). RESULTS Of 4019 studies, we deemed 20, including randomised controlled trials and follow-up and observational studies, to be eligible for our systematic review. The analysed sleep parameters, the evaluation phase and the instruments for sleep assessment varied considerably among the studies. The main findings can be summarised as follows: (i) most of the eligible studies in this systematic review indicate that caffeine used to treat AOP seems to have no effect on key sleep parameters and (ii) the effects on sleep when caffeine is administered earlier, at higher doses or for longer periods than the most common protocol have not been investigated. There is a possible correlation between the caffeine concentration and period of exposure and negative sleep quality, but the sleep assessment protocols used in the included studies did not have high-quality standards and could not provide good evidence. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Sleep quality is an important determinant of health, and better investments in research with adequate sleep assessment tools are necessary to guarantee the ideal management of children who were born preterm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea in infants with Pierre Robin sequence is sleep-position dependent. The influence of sleep position on obstructive events is not established in other infants. METHODS We re-evaluated ten-year pediatric sleep center data in infants aged less than six months, with polysomnography performed in different sleep positions. We excluded infants with syndromes, genetic defects, or structural anomalies. RESULTS Comparison of breathing between supine and side sleeping positions was performed for 72 infants at the median corrected age of 4 weeks (interquartile range (IQR) 2-8 weeks). Of the infants, 74% were male, 35% were born prematurely, and 35% underwent study because of a life-threatening event or for being a SIDS sibling. Upper airway obstruction was more frequent (obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI), p < 0.001), 95th-percentile end-tidal carbon dioxide levels were higher (p = 0.004), and the work of breathing was heavier (p = 0.002) in the supine than in the side position. Median OAHI in the supine position was 8 h-1 (IQR 4-20 h-1), and in the side position was 4 h-1 (IQR 0-10 h-1). CONCLUSIONS Obstructive upper airway events in young infants are more frequent when supine than when sleeping on the side. IMPACT The effect of sleep position on obstructive sleep apnea is not well established in infants other than in those with Pierre Robin sequence. A tendency for upper airway obstruction is position dependent in most infants aged less than 6 months. Upper airway obstruction is more common, end-tidal carbon dioxide 95th-percentile values higher, and breathing more laborious in the supine than in the side-sleeping position. Upper airway obstruction and obstructive events have high REM sleep predominance. As part of obstructive sleep apnea treatment in young infants, side-sleeping positioning may prove useful.

Abstract
ObjectiveAnemia has been reported to adversely influence sleep in infants. However, the association between anemia in pregnancy and infant sleep remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association between maternal anemia in pregnancy and sleep parameters of 6-month-old infants.MethodsWe enrolled 2,410 mother-infant pairs between 2018 and 2021 in Hefei. Data on maternal hemoglobin concentration were collected at 24–28 gestational weeks from the electronic medical records of the hospitals. Nocturnal and daytime sleep duration, number of night awakenings, nocturnal wakefulness, and sleep latency of infants aged 6 months were measured using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire with five items. A restricted cubic spline model was used to examine the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration and infant nocturnal sleep duration after adjusting for potential confounders.ResultsIn our study, 807 (33.5%) mothers had anemia during pregnancy. Compared to infants born to mothers without anemia, infants born to mothers with anemia in pregnancy had shorter nocturnal sleep duration [mean (SD), 560.29 (79.57) mins vs. 574.27 (75.36) mins] at the age of 6 months. Subgroup analysis showed consistent significant differences in nocturnal sleep duration between infant born to anemic and non-anemic mothers, except in case of stratification by preterm birth [mean difference (mins), 2.03 (95% CI, −20.01, −24.07)] and pre-pregnancy obesity [mean difference (mins), −0.85 (95% CI, −16.86, −15.16)]. A J-shaped nonlinear correlation curve was observed between maternal hemoglobin concentration and infant nocturnal sleep duration. Compared with mothers without daily iron supplementation, mothers who had daily iron supplementation had higher hemoglobin concentrations [mean (SD), 112.39 (11.33) g/L vs. 110.66 (10.65) g/L] at delivery and their infants had longer nocturnal sleep duration [mean (SD), 565.99 (82.46) mins vs. 553.66 (76.03) mins].ConclusionAnemia in pregnancy may have an adverse influence on the sleep of 6-mon-old infants, and the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration and nocturnal sleep duration is nonlinear.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The natural evolution of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in young infants is not established. METHODS We re-evaluated 10-year pediatric sleep center infant polysomnography (PSG) data, excluding infants with syndromes, genetic defects, structural anomalies or periodic breathing > 5% of sleep time. RESULTS Obstructive events > 1 h-1 were evident in 255 infants, of which 91 were eligible for the study. Of the 38 infants in a follow-up study, 30 (79%) were male, 15 (40%) were born prematurely, 25 (66%) had observed apneas, and 13 (33%) had experienced a brief, unexplained event or had a sibling of the infant died suddenly. The first PSG was performed at a median corrected age of 4 weeks (interquartile range [IQR] 2-7) and the second at 11 weeks (IQR 9-14). The obstructive apnea and hypopnea index (OAHI) was greater in the supine compared to side-sleeping position in both recordings (p < 0.001), whereas OAHI dropped from 10 h-1 (IQR 6-24) in the first PSG to 3 h-1 (IQR 1-9) in the second PSG (p < 0.001). OSA alleviation was also observable as a decrease in the number of oxygen desaturations (p < 0.001), as a decrease in transcutaneous (p = 0.001) and end-tidal carbon dioxide (p = 0.01) 95th percentile levels, and work of breathing (p = 0.002). Seven infants had a third PSG to verify a satisfactory improvement of OSA. CONCLUSIONS OSA in young infants without a clear syndrome or structural anomaly is sleep position dependent and shows improvement during the following few months.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Examine how different trajectories of reported sleep duration associate with early childhood cognition. METHODS Caregiver-reported sleep duration data (n = 330) were collected using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire at 54 months. Multiple group-based day-, night-, and/or total sleep trajectories were derived-each differing in duration and variability. Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III (Bayley-III) and the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test- 2 (KBIT-2) were used to assess cognition at 24 and 54 months, respectively. RESULTS Compared to short variable night sleep trajectory, long consistent night sleep trajectory was associated with higher scores on Bayley-III (cognition and language), while moderate/long consistent night sleep trajectories were associated with higher KBIT-2 (verbal and composite) scores. Children with a long consistent total sleep trajectory had higher Bayley-III (cognition and expressive language) and KBIT-2 (verbal and composite) scores compared to children with a short variable total sleep trajectory. Moderate consistent total sleep trajectory was associated with higher Bayley-III language and KBIT-2 verbal scores relative to the short variable total trajectory. Children with a long variable day sleep had lower Bayley-III (cognition and fine motor) and KBIT-2 (verbal and composite) scores compared to children with a short consistent day sleep trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Longer and more consistent night- and total sleep trajectories, and a short day sleep trajectory in early childhood were associated with better cognition at 2 and 4.5 years.

Abstract
Perinatal depression and anxiety are common and associated with sleep problems in the offspring. Depression and anxiety are commonly comorbid, yet often studied independently. Our study used an integrative measure of anxiety and depressive symptoms to examine the associations of maternal mental health (mid-pregnancy and postnatal) with infant sleep during the first year of life. A total of 797 mother-child dyads from the 'Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcome' cohort study provided infant sleep data at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age, using the caregiver reported Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire. Maternal mental health was assessed at 26-28 weeks gestation and 3 months postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Bifactor modelling with the individual questionnaire items produced a general affect factor score that provided an integrated measure of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Linear mixed models were used to model the sleep outcomes, with adjustment for maternal age, education, parity, ethnicity, sex of the child and maternal sleep quality concurrent with maternal mental health assessment. We found that poorer mid-pregnancy, but not postpartum, maternal mental health was associated with longer wake after sleep onset duration across the first year of life (β = 49, 95% confidence interval 13-85 min). Poor maternal mental health during mid-pregnancy is linked to longer period of night awakening in the offspring during infancy. Interventions that aim to improve maternal antenatal mental health should examine infant sleep outcomes.

Abstract
Caffeine is the globally consumed psychoactive substance and the drug of choice for the treatment of apnea of prematurity (AOP), but its therapeutic effects are highly variable among preterm infants. Many of the molecular underpinnings of the marked individual response have remained elusive yet. Interestingly, the significant association between Clock gene polymorphisms and the response to caffeine therapy offers an opportunity to advance our understanding of potential mechanistic pathways. In this review, we delineate the functions and mechanisms of human circadian rhythms. An up-to-date advance of the formation and ontogeny of human circadian rhythms during the perinatal period are concisely discussed. Specially, we summarize and discuss the characteristics of circadian rhythms in preterm infants. Second, we discuss the role of caffeine consumption on the circadian rhythms in animal models and human, especially in neonates and preterm infants. Finally, we postulate how circadian-based therapeutic initiatives could open new possibilities to promote precision caffeine therapy for the AOP management in preterm infants.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the influence of wind speed and direction on the convective heat transfer from a sleeping infant in different postures. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a virtual infant manikin with realistic dimensions was developed to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient (hc ) at the body surface and the airflow and temperature distributions. The numerical model was validated beforehand using experimental data collected from infant thermal manikin experiments. The simulation results revealed that the infant's whole-body hc increased from 4.00 to 15.73 W/m2 ·K when wind speed varied from 0.12 to 1 m/s. Infants lost heat more quickly than adults under ventilation, with about 2 W/m2 ·K higher hc than adults in still air, and the discrepancy widened as the wind speed increased. Wind from the floor generated the highest hc , approximately 66.4% greater than the wind from the feet at 1 m/s wind speed. Considering the wind from the feet caused the most evenly distributed hc , ventilation equipment was suggested to be placed on the side of the infant's feet to reduce local discomfort. Based on the simulation results, empirical models of hc were developed, which lay a solid theoretical foundation for further study on the interaction between infants and environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children born extremely preterm disproportionately experience sequelae of preterm birth compared to those born at later gestational ages, including higher prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and associated behaviors. AIM Explore effects of combined dietary docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, and oleic acid (omega 3-6-9) on caregiver-reported behavior and sleep in toddlers born at ≤29 weeks' gestation who were exhibiting symptoms commonly seen with ASD. STUDY DESIGN 90-day randomized (1:1), double blinded, placebo-controlled trial. SUBJECTS Thirty-one children aged 18-38 months received omega 3-6-9 (n = 15) or canola oil placebo (n = 16). OUTCOME MEASURES Mixed effects regression analyses followed intent to treat and explored treatment effects on measures of caregiver-reported behavior (Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5, Toddler Behavior Assessment Questionnaire - Short Form, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, 2nd Edition) and sleep (Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire). RESULTS Twenty-nine of 31 (94%; ntx = 13, nplacebo = 16) children randomized had data available for at least one outcome measure, 27 (87%; ntx = 12, nplacebo = 15) had complete outcome data. Children randomized to omega 3-6-9 experienced a medium magnitude benefit of supplementation on anxious and depressed behaviors (ΔDifference = -1.27, d = -0.58, p = 0.049) and internalizing behaviors (ΔDifference = -3.41, d = -0.68, p = 0.05); and a large magnitude benefit on interpersonal relationship adaptive behaviors (ΔDifference = 7.50, d = 0.83, p = 0.01), compared to placebo. No effects were observed on other aspects of behavior or sleep. CONCLUSIONS Findings provide preliminary support for further exploration of omega 3-6-9 during toddlerhood to improve socioemotional outcomes among children born preterm, especially for those showing early symptoms commonly seen with ASD. Abstract
There is emergent literature on the relationship between the development of sleep-wake cycles, sleep architecture, and sleep duration during the neonatal period on neurodevelopmental outcomes among children born preterm. There is also a growing literature on techniques to assess sleep staging in preterm neonates using either EEG methods or heart and respiration rate. Upon discharge from hospital, sleep in children born preterm has been assessed using parent report, actigraphy, and polysomnography. This review describes the ontogeny and measurement of sleep in the neonatal period, the current evidence on the impact of preterm birth on sleep both in the NICU and in childhood and adolescence, and the interaction between sleep, cognition, and social-emotional outcomes in this population.

Abstract
The proper development of sleep and sleep-wake rhythms during early neonatal life is crucial to lifelong neurological well-being. Recent data suggests that infants who have poor quality sleep demonstrate a risk for impaired neurocognitive outcomes. Sleep ontogenesis is a complex process, whereby alternations between rudimentary brain states-active vs. wake and active sleep vs. quiet sleep-mature during the last trimester of pregnancy. If the infant is born preterm, much of this process occurs in the neonatal intensive care unit, where environmental conditions might interfere with sleep. Functional brain connectivity (FC), which reflects the brain's ability to process and integrate information, may become impaired, with ensuing risks of compromised neurodevelopment. However, the specific mechanisms linking sleep ontogenesis to the emergence of FC are poorly understood and have received little investigation, mainly due to the challenges of studying causal links between developmental phenomena and assessing FC in newborn infants. Recent advancements in infant neuromonitoring and neuroimaging strategies will allow for the design of interventions to improve infant sleep quality and quantity. This review discusses how sleep and FC develop in early life, the dynamic relationship between sleep, preterm birth, and FC, and the challenges associated with understanding these processes. IMPACT: Sleep in early life is essential for proper functional brain development, which is essential for the brain to integrate and process information. This process may be impaired in infants born preterm. The connection between preterm birth, early development of brain functional connectivity, and sleep is poorly understood. This review discusses how sleep and brain functional connectivity develop in early life, how these processes might become impaired, and the challenges associated with understanding these processes. Potential solutions to these challenges are presented to provide direction for future research.

Abstract
Actigraphy is a cost-efficient method to estimate sleep-wake patterns over long periods in natural settings. However, the lack of methodological standards in actigraphy research complicates the generalization of outcomes. A rapidly growing methodological diversity is visible in the field, which increasingly necessitates the detailed reporting of methodology. We address this problem and evaluate the current state of the art and recent methodological developments in actigraphy reporting with a special focus on infants and young children. Through a systematic literature search on PubMed (keywords: sleep, actigraphy, child *, preschool, children, infant), we identified 126 recent articles (published since 2012), which were classified and evaluated for reporting of actigraphy. Results show that all studies report on the number of days/nights the actigraph was worn. Reporting was good with respect to device model, placement and sleep diary, whereas reporting was worse for epoch length, algorithm, artefact identification, data loss and definition of variables. In the studies with infants only (n = 58), the majority of articles (62.1%) reported a recording of actigraphy that was continuous across 24 hr. Of these, 23 articles (63.9%) analysed the continuous 24-hr data and merely a fifth used actigraphy to quantify daytime sleep. In comparison with an evaluation in 2012, we observed small improvements in reporting of actigraphy methodology. We propose stricter adherence to standards in reporting methodology in order to streamline actigraphy research with infants and young children, to improve comparability and to facilitate big data ventures in the sleep community.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Childhood overweight and obesity (OWO) is a primary global health challenge. Childhood OWO prevention is now a public health priority in China. The Sino-Canadian Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (SCHeLTI), one of four trials being undertaken by the international HeLTI consortium, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a multifaceted, community-family-mother-child intervention on childhood OWO and non-communicable diseases risk. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a multicentre, cluster-randomised, controlled trial conducted in Shanghai, China. The unit of randomisation is the service area of Maternal Child Health Units (N=36). We will recruit 4500 women/partners/families in maternity and district level hospitals. Participants in the intervention group will receive a multifaceted, integrated package of health promotion interventions beginning in preconception or in the first trimester of pregnancy, continuing into infancy and early childhood. The intervention, which is centred on a modified motivational interviewing approach, will target early-life maternal and child risk factors for adiposity. Through the development of a biological specimen bank, we will study potential mechanisms underlying the effects of the intervention. The primary outcome for the trial is childhood OWO (body mass index for age ≥85th percentile) at 5 years of age, based on WHO sex-specific standards. The study has a power of 0.8 (α=0.05) to detect a 30% risk reduction in the proportion of children with OWO at 5 years of age, from 24.4% in the control group to 17% in the intervention group. Recruitment was launched on 30 August 2018 for the pilot study and 10 January 2019 for the formal study. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study has been approved by the Medical Research Ethics Committee of the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital in Shanghai, China, and the Research Ethics Board of the Centre Intégré Universitaire de Santé et Services Sociaux de l'Estrie-CHUS in Sherbrooke, Canada. Abstract
PURPOSE A multicentre prospective cohort study, known as the Chinese Pregnant Women Cohort Study (CPWCS), was established in 2017 to collect exposure data during pregnancy (except environmental exposure) and analyse the relationship between lifestyle during pregnancy and obstetric outcomes. Data about mothers and their children's life and health as well as children's laboratory testing will be collected during the offspring follow-up of CPWCS, which will enable us to further investigate the longitudinal relationship between exposure in different periods (during pregnancy and childhood) and children's development. PARTICIPANTS 9193 pregnant women in 24 hospitals in China who were in their first trimester (5-13 weeks gestational age) from 25 July 2017 to 26 November 2018 were included in CPWCS by convenience sampling. Five hospitals in China which participated in CPWCS with good cooperation will be selected as the sample source for the Chinese Pregnant Women Cohort Study (Offspring Follow-up) (CPWCS-OF). FINDINGS TO DATE Some factors affecting pregnancy outcomes and health problems during pregnancy have been discovered through data analysis. The details are discussed in the 'Findings to date' section. FUTURE PLANS Infants and children and their mothers who meet the criteria will be enrolled in the study and will be followed up every 2 years. The longitudinal relationship between exposure (questionnaire data, physical examination and biospecimens, medical records, and objective environmental data collected through geographical information system and remote sensing technology) in different periods (during pregnancy and childhood) and children's health (such as sleeping problem, oral health, bowel health and allergy-related health problems) will be analysed. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES As the mother-offspring relationship is central to human reproduction, postpartum depression symptoms are difficult to explain in evolutionary terms. We proposed that postpartum depression might arise as a result of evolutionary mother-offspring conflict over maternal investment, and investigated the association between postpartum depression symptoms, infant night waking, maternal sleep disturbance and breastfeeding frequency. METHODOLOGY We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using survey responses at 6 months postpartum from 1598 Finnish mothers. We hypothesized that infant night waking at 6 months postpartum would be associated with postpartum depression symptoms, and that this association would be mediated by maternal sleep disturbance and a higher breastfeeding frequency. RESULTS Infant night waking was moderately associated with postpartum depression symptoms, and this association was mediated by maternal sleep disturbance (R 2=0.09). Contrary to our prediction, we found that increased breastfeeding was associated with less postpartum depression symptoms. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS We conclude that postpartum depression symptoms might partly be the result of increased maternal fatigue stemming from high offspring demands on maternal investment, but that this is not due to the metabolic strain from increased breastfeeding. Studying postpartum depression from the mother-offspring conflict perspective can potentially improve our understanding of the involved behavioral processes of both mother and offspring, and allow interventions designed to benefit the well-being of both parties. Lay Summary: We proposed that postpartum depression is due to an evolutionary conflict between mother and infant, where the infant tires the mother to delay the arrival of a sibling. We found a link between infant night waking and postpartum depression, mediated by the mother's sleep, but not by breastfeeding frequency.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To evaluate the prevalence of craniofacial/orthodontic abnormalities and oral dysfunctions in a population of children with persistent sleep-disordered breathing despite adenotonsillectomy. METHODS Medical charts of 4,000 children with sleep-disordered breathing operated on in a tertiary hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Patients reporting persistent sleep-disordered breathing symptoms were invited to an orthodontic/myofunctional evaluation following the Sleep Clinical Score), followed by a 1-night ambulatory type III sleep study. RESULTS One hundred nonsyndromic symptomatic patients were examined (mean age 8.8 ± 3.5 years), from 1 to 12 years after surgery (mean 4.6 ± 3.1 years); 24% were overweight/obese; 69 had a sleep study. Although prevalent, oronasal abnormalities and malocclusions were not specifically associated with pathological sleep parameters (cartilage hypotonia 18%, septal deviation 5%, short lingual frenulum 40%). Malocclusions were associated with a higher respiratory event index in children under 8 years only, whereas an impaired nasal dilator reflex and tongue immaturity were associated with an increased obstructive respiratory event index in all patients (1.72 ± 2.29 vs 0.72 ± 1.22 events/h, P = .011) and Respiratory Event Index, respectively (3.63 ± 3.63 vs 1.19 ± 1.19 events/h). Male sex, phenotype, nasal obstruction, oral breathing, and young age at surgery (< 3 years) were significantly related to higher respiratory event index. Using the Sleep Clinical Score > 6.5 cut-off, patients with persistent sleep apnea were significantly distinct from chronic snoring (2.72 ± 2.67 vs 0.58 ± 0.55, P < .01). CONCLUSIONS Oronasal anatomical and functional abnormalities were quite prevalent and various in persistent sleep-disordered breathing after adenotonsillectomy. Nasal disuse and tongue motor immaturity were associated with a higher obstructive respiratory event index in the long term, whereas craniofacial risk factors might have a more pronounced impact at younger age.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The presentation of sleep issues in childhood differs from the presentation in adulthood and may be more subtle. Sleep issues may affect children differently than adults, and distinct treatment approaches are often used in children. RECENT FINDINGS Sodium oxybate was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2018 for an expanded indication of treatment of sleepiness or cataplexy in patients with narcolepsy type 1 or narcolepsy type 2 aged 7 years or older, with side effect and safety profiles similar to those seen in adults. Restless sleep disorder is a recently proposed entity in which restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, and often iron deficiency are observed, but children do not meet the criteria for restless legs syndrome or periodic limb movement disorder. SUMMARY Children's sleep is discussed in this article, including normal sleep patterns and effects of insufficient sleep. Sleep disorders of childhood are reviewed, including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias, narcolepsy, and Kleine-Levin syndrome. Children with neurologic issues or neurodevelopmental disorders frequently have sleep disorders arising from an interaction of heterogeneous factors. Further attention to sleep may often be warranted through a polysomnogram or referral to a pediatric sleep specialist. Sleep disorders may cause indelible effects on children's cognitive functioning, general health, and well-being, and awareness of sleep disorders is imperative for neurologists who treat children.

Abstract
Background Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a multifactorial syndrome caused by many risk factors, such as craniofacial anomalies, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity, and airway inflammation. Although new treatment patterns have recently been proposed, treatment methods for children remain particularly challenging and controversial. This randomized controlled trial was designed to investigate the efficacy of adenotonsillectomy and/or orthodontic treatment for children who have mild OSAHS with mandibular retrognathia. Methods A sample of 352 children with mild OSAHS and mandibular retrognathia, who are aged between 7 and 10 years, will be enrolled in the study. They will be randomized into four groups: the drug treatment group, the surgical treatment group, the orthodontic treatment group, or the surgery and postoperative orthodontic group. After randomization the children will receive treatments within 4 weeks. Outcome assessment will take place at the following points: (1) baseline, (2) 7 months after the treatment starting point, (3) 12 months after the treatment starting point, and (4) 24 months after the treatment starting point. The primary endpoint of the trial is the mean change in obstructive apnea/hypopnea index. Other endpoints will consist of the lowest oxygen saturation, apnea index, and hypopnea index assessed by polysomnography, subjective symptoms (assessed by the OSA-20 questionnaire), cephalometric measurements, and morphologic analysis of the upper airway. Discussion The results of this study will provide valuable evidence for the merits and long-term efficacy of different treatment approaches and contribute to facilitating the multidisciplinary treatment of pediatric OSAHS. Abstract
Sleep is a crucial human physiologic need. Preterm infants in the NICU are exposed to noxious stimuli that often disrupt and shorten their sleep periods. Sleep disruption may have a negative effect on clinical outcomes, growth, and development and may also delay hospital discharge. Increasing evidence suggests that sleep quality is critical for brain development and synaptic plasticity and is associated with long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. The purpose of this article is to discuss the importance of sleep in preterm infants, describe tools commonly used to assess infant sleep and identify different sleep-wake states, and identify interventions that promote sleep in preterm infants in the NICU. Nurses play a vital role in implementing appropriate interventions that promote preterm infants' sleep.

Abstract
Environmental and biological factors contribute to sleep development during infancy. Parenting plays a particularly important role in modulating infant sleep, potentially via the serotonin system, which is itself involved in regulating infant sleep. We hypothesized that maternal neglect and serotonin system dysregulation would be associated with daytime sleep in infant rhesus monkeys. Subjects were nursery-reared infant rhesus macaques (n = 287). During the first month of life, daytime sleep-wake states were rated bihourly (0800-2100). Infants were considered neglected (n = 16) if before nursery-rearing, their mother repeatedly failed to retrieve them. Serotonin transporter genotype and concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were used as markers of central serotonin system functioning. t tests showed that neglected infants were observed sleeping less frequently, weighed less, and had higher 5-HIAA than non-neglected nursery-reared infants. Regression revealed that serotonin transporter genotype moderated the relationship between 5-HIAA and daytime sleep: in subjects possessing the Ls genotype, there was a positive correlation between 5-HIAA and daytime sleep, whereas in subjects possessing the LL genotype there was no association. These results highlight the pivotal roles that parents and the serotonin system play in sleep development. Daytime sleep alterations observed in neglected infants may partially derive from serotonin system dysregulation.

Abstract
Sleep is a necessary function of life. Fetuses and neonates spend most of their day sleeping, making it paramount to place emphasis on adequate and optimal sleep. As the current body of literature continues to expand, we have increased our understanding of sleep and its role in development. Sleep disturbances, particularly early in life can affect all aspects of health such as neurological development, emotional well-being, and overall growth. This article aims to provide a primer on sleep development from fetal life into the neonatal period, discuss sleep in both the home and hospital settings, explore the tools used to measure sleep, and review common interventions applied to those infants experiencing poor sleep. Lastly, there is a mention of long-term outcomes and how early recognition and implementation of measures could help to improve overall growth and development throughout childhood. Abstract
The consequences of prematurity on brain functional development are numerous and diverse, and impact all brain functions at different levels. Prematurity occurs between 22 and 36 weeks of gestation. This period is marked by extreme dynamics in the physiologic maturation, structural, and functional processes. These different processes appear sequentially or simultaneously. They are dependent on genetic and/or environmental factors. Disturbance of these processes or of the fine-tuning between them, when caring for premature children, is likely to induce disturbances in the structural and functional development of the immature neural networks. These will appear as impairments in learning skills progress and are likely to have a lasting impact on the development of children born prematurely. The level of severity depends on the initial alteration, whether structural or functional. In this chapter, after having briefly reviewed the neurodevelopmental, structural, and functional processes, we describe, in a nonexhaustive manner, the impact of prematurity on the different brain, motor, sensory, and cognitive functions.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a highly prevalent condition affecting 2% to 4% of children. However, the prevalence and characteristics of SDB in children younger than 2 years and the effect of prematurity as a risk factor remains unclear. METHODS Children younger than 24 months referred for PSG at two medical centers between the years 2014 to 2018 were included in this retrospective analysis. We excluded children with genetic syndromes. Polysomnography (PSG) was performed and scored according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. RESULTS Ninety-eight children were included (age 14.1 ± 6.4 [2-23] months), with 31 born prematurely (PRETERM; 24 to 34 weeks gestational age). PRETERM had increased odds of SDB (age and sex adjusted), using a cutoff of AHI ≥ 5 events/h with an odds ratio of 4.3 (95% confidence interval 1.5-12.9). Gestational age was the only significant predictor for SDB in this cohort, every additional week of gestation reducing the odds of SDB by 12.5%. PRETERM SDB was also characterized by more severe nocturnal hypoxemia, increased frequency of central apnea, and altered sleep architecture. CONCLUSIONS Current findings underscore the importance of prematurity antecedents as a risk factor for SDB in young symptomatic children younger than 2 years referred for a PSG. Future studies focused on improved estimates of the prevalence of SDB among nonreferral young children appear warranted.

Abstract
Ongoing advancements in neonatal care since the late 1980s have led to increased numbers of premature infants surviving well beyond the neonatal period. As a result of increased survival, many individuals born preterm manifest chronic respiratory symptoms throughout infancy, childhood, and adult life. The archetypical respiratory disease of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, is the second most common chronic pediatric respiratory disease after asthma. However, there are several commonly held misconceptions. These misconceptions include that bronchopulmonary dysplasia is rare, that bronchopulmonary dysplasia resolves within the first few years of life, and that bronchopulmonary dysplasia does not impact respiratory health in adult life. This focused review describes a spectrum of respiratory conditions that individuals born prematurely may experience throughout their lifespan. Specifically, this review provides quantitative estimates of the number of individuals with alveolar, airway, and vascular phenotypes associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, as well as non-bronchopulmonary dysplasia respiratory phenotypes such as airway malacia, obstructive sleep apnea, and control of breathing issues. Furthermore, this review illustrates what is known about the potential for progression and/or lack of resolution of these respiratory phenotypes in childhood and adult life. Recognizing the spectrum of respiratory phenotypes associated with individuals born preterm and providing comprehensive and personalized care to these individuals may help to modulate adverse respiratory outcomes in later life.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This secondary analysis characterized sleep patterns for toddlers born preterm and tested effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)+ arachidonic acid (AA) supplementation on children's caregiver-reported sleep. Exploratory analyses tested whether child sex, birth weight, and caregiver depressive symptomatology were moderators of the treatment effect. METHODS Omega Tots was a single-site 180-day randomized (1:1), double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Children (n = 377) were age 10 to 16 months at enrollment, born at less than 35 weeks' gestation, assigned to 180 days of daily 200 mg DHA + 200 mg AA supplementation or placebo (400 mg corn oil), and followed after the trial ended to age 26 to 32 months. Caregivers completed a sociodemographic profile and questionnaires about their depressive symptomatology (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) and the child's sleep (Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire). Analyses compared changes in sleep between the DHA+AA and placebo groups, controlling for baseline scores. Exploratory post hoc subgroup analyses were conducted. RESULTS Eighty-one percent (ntx = 156; nplacebo = 150) of children had 180-day trial outcome data; 68% (ntx = 134; nplacebo = 122) had postintervention outcome data. Differences in change between the DHA+AA and placebo groups after 180 days of supplementation were not statistically significant for the entire cohort. Male children (difference in nocturnal sleep change = 0.44, effect size = 0.26, P = .04; sleep problems odds ratio = 0.36, 95% confidence interval = 0.15, 0.82) and children of depressed caregivers (difference in nocturnal sleep change = 1.07, effect size = 0.65, P = .006; difference in total sleep change = 1.10, effect size = 0.50, P = .04) assigned to the treatment group showed improvements in sleep, compared to placebo. CONCLUSIONS Although there is no evidence of an overall effect of DHA+AA supplementation on child sleep, exploratory post hoc analyses identified important subgroups of children born preterm who may benefit. Abstract
Changes in nighttime sleep consolidation and daytime discontinuation have been observed in early life. Yet information about societal or cultural factors remains scant for implementing sleep recommendations. We aimed to provide pooled estimates of subjective sleep duration, number of nightwakings and sleep timing; to describe their age-related trends; and to determine potential cross-cultural disparities between predominantly-Asian (PA) and predominantly-Caucasian (PC) regions during the first three years of life. We performed this review according to the PRISMA guidelines. Overall, 102 studies with 167,886 children aged 0-3 y from 26 different countries/regions were included. Compared to PC regions, PA toddlers had shorter sleep duration and more frequent nightwakings. When PC regions were further divided into Pacific Rim and Europe, differences were much more evident between PA and Pacific Rim for all nighttime sleep parameters. Trends of nighttime sleep duration and bedtime for PC regions showed rapid changes over the first 3-6 mo before stabilizing to a plateau, whereas a different change was found for PA regions. In conclusion, an apparent cross-cultural disparity of the subjective sleep parameters already exists in early childhood. Improved operationalization of sleep parameters and more objective evidence are needed to establish cultural-sensitive recommendations this early in life.

Abstract
Background Both preterm and post-term births have been associated with neonatal morbidity and mortality, including adverse impact on neurodevelopment. Important neural maturational processes take place during sleep in newborns, but findings on gestational duration and sleep in early childhood are contradictory and often derive from small clinical samples. We studied the association of gestational age at birth with sleep duration in early childhood in three population-based cohorts. Methods Gestational age at birth and sleep duration were assessed in three population-based cohort studies in The Netherlands (n = 6471), Singapore (n = 862), and Canada (n = 583). Gestational age at birth was assessed using ultrasound in pregnancy in combination with date of birth, and caregivers repeatedly reported on child sleep duration at three, six, 24, and 36 months of age. Generalized estimating equations were used, which were adjusted for confounders, and findings were pooled in a meta-analysis. Results Children born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) showed longer sleep duration than children born at term; and children born post-term (≥42 weeks of gestation) showed shorter sleep duration. The meta-analysis indicated a small negative effect of gestational age on child sleep duration (effect size −0.11), when assessed in children born at term only. Conclusion In early childhood, children with a lower gestational age have a longer sleep duration, even when they are born at term (37–42 weeks of gestation). These subtle yet consistent findings point to the importance of maturational processes during sleep, not only in premature children but also in children born at term after shorter gestational duration. Children born after shorter gestational duration sleep longer than their term born peers. Lower gestational age is linked to longer sleep duration in three cohorts, even in term born children (37-42 weeks gestation). The association between gestational age and sleep duration is most prominent in the first year of life. Our subtle yet consistent findings point to the importance of maturational processes during sleep. Maturational processes underlying the interplay between gestational age and sleep duration should be investigated.

Abstract
Abnormal breathing during sleep is related to intrinsic and extrinsic factors that are present early in life. Investigation of fetal development and early-in-life orofacial growth allows recognition of risk factors that lead to change in upper airway patency, which leads to abnormal upper airway resistance, abnormal inspiratory efforts, and further increase in resistance and progressive narrowing of the collapsible upper airway. Such evolution can be recognized by appropriate clinical evaluation, specific polysomnographic patterns, and orofacial imaging. Recognition of the problems should lead to appropriate treatments and prevention of obstructive sleep apnea and its comorbidities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess if the effects of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) on heart rate (HR) and HR variability, as a measure of autonomic control, were more severe in a group of children born preterm compared with a group of children born at term referred to our sleep laboratory for assessment of SDB. STUDY DESIGN Children (3-12 years of age) referred for polysomnographic assessment of SDB were recruited; 50 born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) and 50 at term, matched for age and SDB severity. The mean HR and HR variability using power spectral analysis were calculated for each child for wake and sleep, and stages N1, N2, N3, and rapid eye movement sleep. RESULTS Ex-preterm children were born between 23 and 35 weeks of gestational age (29.3 ± 3.6; mean ± SEM). There were no differences in the demographic, sleep, or respiratory characteristics between the groups. High-frequency power (reflecting parasympathetic activity) was greater in the ex-preterm children in both N2 and N3 (P < .05 for both) and total power was greater in N3 (P < .05). When the children were divided by SDB severity, these effects were most marked in those preterm born children with moderate to severe disease. CONCLUSIONS Preterm born children matched for age and SDB severity with children born at term showed no differences in sleep characteristics; however, they did exhibit increased parasympathetic tone during non-rapid eye movement sleep.

Abstract
Myofunctional therapy (MFT) has been reported to be an alternative treatment to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but compliance and long-term outcome in the children were considered as an issue. A prospective study was performed on age-matched children submitted to MFT or to a functional oral device used during sleep (passive MFT) and compared with no-treatment control group. Compliance is a major problem of MFT, and MFT will have to take into consideration the absolute need to have continuous parental involvement in the procedure for pediatric OSA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is essential for human health and functioning. Parents of preterm infants are susceptible to sleep disturbances because of stress related to the preterm birth. Poor sleep has the potential to affect parental health and well-being. The aim of this study was to identify and map evidence on sleep and its relationship to health in parents of preterm infants. No review has summarized the evidence on this topic. METHODS A scoping review was conducted. Seven health and medical electronic research databases were searched for relevant quantitative and qualitative primary studies, including grey literature. The search was performed March 2-7, 2017. RESULTS Ten American studies and one Australian study were included in the review. Most research was quantitative and focused on maternal sleep and mental health within the first two weeks after the childbirth. Both objective and subjective sleep measures were used to study sleep at the hospital; actigraphs were not used after discharge. Maternal sleep was poor early postpartum, and this was associated with negative health outcomes. Two cohort studies compared sleep in mothers of preterm and term infants, but the results were conflicting. In one qualitative study, fathers described their inability to catch up on sleep after homecoming with a preterm baby. CONCLUSIONS Quantitative studies reporting on maternal sleep early postpartum was most frequently occurring in the results. Qualitative research on the topic was identified as a knowledge gap. More cultural and geographical breadth, including research on fathers' sleep, is recommended in future research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep problems, neuro-developmental development, and sleep-disordered-breathing (SDB), are reported as more prevalent in premature infants than in full-term infants. We investigated the relationship between neuro-development, and SDB in preterm infants at 24 months corrected age (CA) with a narrow palatal presentation over time. METHODS We enrolled infants 40 weeks or younger at birth collecting obstetric and birth data. Participants were followed up at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months CA. We evaluated craniofacial development by inspecting and photo documenting hard palate; sleep using sleep diary, actigraphy and night-time polysomnography-PSG-; and development using Bayley- Scales-of-Infant-Development and Denver-Developmental-Screening-Test (DDST) at each visit and comparing results at six months and two years. RESULTS 244 premature infants [139 (57.0%) boys, [at birth: mean gestational age-GA- 31.5 ± 3.2 weeks, 1691.9 ± 593.9 g, 40.2 ± 5.2 cm], and 30 full term infants (50% boys), [mean GA 39.3 ± 1.0 weeks, 3131.0 ± 390.0 g, and 49.38 ± 2.0 cm] were enrolled in the study. At 6 and 24 months, 65.2% premature infants had a narrow hard palate (NHP). At 24 months, 79% had an apnea-hypopnea- index (AHI) > 1 events/hour at PSG, with a mean AHI of 3.00 ± 2.95. Only 10% of full term infants had NHP at birth and the mean AHI was 0.5 ± 0.2 event/hour at 24 months. CONCLUSION Preterm infants have a higher occurrence of NHP at birth. At two years of age they have more sleep problems, most commonly associated with obstructive-SDB, and a higher rate of development delays. Frequency of NHP is still abnormally high, suggesting not only abnormal orofacial growth over-time, but also impact of this abnormal growth in the genesis of the obstructive-SDB.

Abstract
Good quality sleep of sufficient duration is vital for optimal physiological function and our health. Sleep deprivation is associated with impaired neurocognitive function and emotional control, and increases the risk for cardiometabolic diseases, obesity and cancer. Sleep develops during fetal life with the emergence of a recognisable pattern of sleep states in the preterm fetus associated with the development, maturation and connectivity within neural networks in the brain. Despite the physiological importance of sleep, surprisingly little is known about how sleep develops in individuals born preterm. Globally, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm (<37 weeks gestation) each year, and these babies are at significant risk of neural injury and impaired brain development. This review discusses how sleep develops during fetal and neonatal life, how preterm birth impacts on sleep development to adulthood, and the factors which may contribute to impaired brain and sleep development, leading to altered neurocognitive, behavioural and motor capabilities in the infant and child. Going forward, the challenge is to identify specific risk factors for impaired sleep development in preterm babies to allow for the design of interventions that will improve the quality and quantity of sleep throughout life.

Abstract
BackgroundBrain development underlies maturation of sleep patterns throughout childhood. Intrauterine head growth-marker of early neurodevelopment-has not been associated with childhood sleep characteristics. We explored associations between ultrasonographic measures of prenatal and early postnatal neurodevelopment and childhood sleep.MethodsA total of 6,808 children from a population-based birth cohort (Generation R) were included. Head circumference (HC) and lateral ventricles size were assessed with mid- and late-pregnancy fetal ultrasounds, and with cranial ultrasound 3-20 weeks postnatally. Mothers reported children's sleep duration at 2 and 3 years, and sleep problems at 1.5, 3, and 6 years.ResultsLarger ventricular size, but not HC, was related to longer sleep duration at 3 years (β=0.06 h, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.02; 0.10 in late-pregnancy and β=0.11 h, 95% CI: 0.02; 0.20 in early infancy, mid-pregnancy parameters were unrelated to sleep duration). Larger HC in mid-pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk for being a "problematic sleeper" up to the age of 6 years (odds ratio (OR): 0.94, 95% CI: 0.89; 0.99). Consistently, children with larger HC in early infancy were less likely to be "problematic sleepers" at 3 and 6 years.ConclusionsThis study shows that variations in fetal and neonatal brain size may underlie behavioral expression of sleep in childhood. Albeit small effect estimates, these associations provide evidence for neurodevelopmental origins of sleep.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although sleep disturbances in infants and toddlers are common, there is no suitable validated tool in Spanish to evaluate sleep disorders. The Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) is a well-established multidimensional questionnaire widely used internationally. OBJECTIVES To adapt the BISQ questionnaire to Spanish and analyse its reliability and validity. To explore its feasibility, both in the clinical context, and in epidemiological research. METHODS Participants were parents of children between 3 and 30 months of age. The adaptation to Spanish (BISQ-E) was achieved by using both back translation and consensus, following the international guidelines.Reliability was determined by means of test-retest and measurement of agreement (Kappa value) between 2forms of administration of the questionnaire (self-administration and clinical interview). Construct validity was established by analysing its correlation with a sleep diary. RESULTS A total of 87 families/children participated. The test-retest reliability undertaken in 60 subjects was excellent; r = 0.848 (P<0.001). The kappa value was 0.939 (95% CI: 0.858-1.00, P<0.001).The agreement between BISQ-E and the sleep diary was analysed in 27 families/children, with statistically significant values being obtained for the following variables: bedtime (r = 0.731), hours of night sleep (r = 0.726), hours of daytime sleep (r = 0.867), and number of nocturnal awakenings (r = 0.888) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The Spanish adaptation of the BISQ shows overall adequate validity and reliability for the evaluation of sleep in infants and pre-school children. Its use as a clinical tool, or for clinical-epidemiological research studies, is feasible.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are limited data on the effect of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on sleep disordered breathing (SDB). We hypothesized that both the severity of prematurity and BPD would increase the likelihood of SDB in early childhood. Our secondary aim was to evaluate the association of demographic factors on the development of SDB. METHODS This is a retrospective study of patient factors and overnight polysomnogram (PSG) data of children enrolled in our BPD registry between 2008 and 2015. Association between PSG results and studied variables was assessed using multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS One-hundred-forty children underwent at least one sleep study on room air. The mean respiratory disturbance index (RDI) was elevated at 9.9 events/hr (SD: 10.1). The mean obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI) was 6.5 (9.1) events/hr and the mean central event rate of 3.0 (3.7) events/hr. RDI had decreased by 22% or 1.5 events/hour (95%CI: 0.6, 1.9) with each year of age (P = 0.005). Subjects with more severe respiratory disease had 38% more central events (P = 0.02). Infants exposed to secondhand smoke had 2.4% lower (P = 0.04) oxygen saturation nadirs and a pattern for more desaturation events. Non-white subjects were found to have 33% higher OAHI (P = 0.05), while white subjects had a 61% higher rate of central events (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS RDI was elevated in a selected BPD population compared to norms for non-preterm children. BPD severity, smoke exposure, and race may augment the severity of SDB. RDI improved with age but was still elevated by age 4, suggesting that this population is at risk for the sequelae of SDB.

Abstract
AIM This study explored whether extremely preterm (EPT) children had different sleep characteristics in childhood than children born at term and how neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) affected sleep in children born EPT. METHODS A Norwegian national cohort of 231 children born EPT from 1999 to 2000 and separate study data on 556 children born at term in 2001 were compared. Parental questionnaires mapped the children's current sleep habits at 11 years of age, namely the prevalence of sleep problems throughout childhood until this age and five categories of sleep problems. In addition, the EPT children were clinically assessed at five years of age. RESULTS The EPT children had different sleep habits than the controls, for example they went to bed earlier. EPT children had a higher prevalence of sleep problems than the controls throughout childhood (26% versus 14%, p < 0.001) and this was also higher for the 93 EPT children with no NDD (20%) than for the controls (14%) and increased with increasing NDD to 67% (p = 0.015) for the six children with severe NDD. CONCLUSION EPT children had different sleep habits to term-born controls at 11 years of age, including those with no NDD. The prevalence of sleep problems increased with increasing NDD.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to serve as an introduction to understanding sleep in the fetus, the preterm neonate and the term neonate. Sleep appears to have numerous important roles, particularly in the consolidation of new information. The sleep cycle changes over time, neonates spend the most time in active sleep and have a progressive shortening of active sleep and lengthening of quiet sleep. Additionally, the sleep cycle is disrupted by many things including disease state and environment, and the amplitude integrated EEG can be a useful tool in evaluating sleep, and sleep disturbances, in neonates. Finally, there are protective factors for infant sleep that are still being studied.
