Abstract
INTRODUCTION Worldwide, 2.4 billion people rely on solid fuels such as wood or charcoal for cooking, leading to approximately 3.2 million deaths per year from illnesses attributable to household air pollution. Across Africa, household air pollution generated by solid fuel use accounts for nearly 700,000 deaths each year. Most studies to date have focused either household air pollution exposure, its impacts on particular health outcomes or on the efficacy of mitigation interventions. However, the economic, social, and cultural determinants of household air pollution in Africa are still poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to explore people's experience of using solid fuels for cooking in two informal settlements, Ndirande in Malawi and Mukuru in Kenya, and the associated harms caused by household air pollution. METHODS We adopted a community-based participatory method, photovoice, which was conducted with 9 participants in Ndirande and 10 participants in Mukuru. Participants took pictures reflecting their experiences and perceptions of household air pollution harms over a two-week period, and later discussed, sorted and analysed those in a series of meetings. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. RESULTS With their pictures, participants described fuel stacking and switching behaviours in their communities. They described a mix of charcoal, firewood and other biomass fuels use. They also expressed their awareness and perceptions of the harms caused by smoke when cooking. Participants explained the simple behaviours used by residents to minimize the harms of household air pollution to themselves and within their own household. Other themes explored the roles and responsibilities for procuring fuels in the home, and the stated solutions required to address the issues and manage the transition to cleaner fuels in those informal settlements. CONCLUSION This study highlights not only the need to understand the daily life, priorities and concerns of those who use solid fuels on informal settlements, but also the urgency to place them and their experience at the heart of the solutions that will reduce the health harms of household air pollution.

Abstract
The mixture of contaminants in the air (e.g., PM2.5, smoke) is a part of air pollutants that has become a hot environmental issue. Previous epidemiological studies have reported the relationship between wood smoke and PM2.5 exposure and oral cancer, but findings have been inconsistent. Therefore, this work designed to find out the relationship between mixture contaminants in air exposure and oral cancer. Fourteen studies were included through research in three databases before February 2024. Before analysis, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was applied to examine the quality of all selected studies. Then, the meta-analysis was carried out by meta-regression analysis, sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis. The results showed that exposure to PM2.5 may have a positive association with oral cancer (pooled OR = 1.13, 95 % confidence interval: 1.06, 1.20). In contrast, no significant association was found between indoor air pollution and oral cancer. However, the result of the subgroup analysis indicated there is a significant association of indoor air pollution and oral cancer in developing countries (pooled OR = 2.5, 95 % confidence interval: 1.7, 3.6). In addition, the heterogeneity among studies of indoor air pollution exposure and oral cancer may caused by studies carried out in developed countries according to the subgroup and meta-regression analyses. In conclusion, the studies about indoor air pollution exposure and oral cancer are discrepant. The effects of mixed air contaminants for people's health are not simple and more studies are demanded to find out it in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most households in low- and middle-income countries still cook using solid fuels in poorly ventilated dwellings. Indoor air pollution causes various health problems, like pneumonia, lung cancer, stillbirth, low birth weight, impaired cognitive development, and cataracts. Nevertheless, a few evidences are available in Africa, including Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of indoor air pollution prevention practices and associated factors among household mothers in Olenchiti town, Oromia, Ethiopia. METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Four hundred twenty mothers were randomly selected by systematic random sampling. Data was collected through an interview and observation checklist. The collected data entered into Epi-Info version 7.2.5 was cleaned, edited, and then exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the findings. Binary logistic regression was computed to analyze the effect of each variable on the outcome variable. Model adequacy fitness was checked with the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. The multicollinearity of independent variables was checked with the variance inflation factor. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and P -value <0.05 was used as cutoff points to declare significance in the final model. RESULTS The overall good practices of mothers towards the prevention of indoor air pollution was 188 (45.0%). Mothers who had under-five children (AOR = 0.49, 95%CI (0.31-0.76), mothers in grade 9-12 (AOR = 0.51, 95%CI (0.28-0.92)) were significantly associated with indoor air pollution prevention practices. CONCLUSION The overall good practices of mothers towards indoor air pollution were low compared to different findings. Under-five children and educational status were significantly associated with indoor air pollution prevention practices in the final model. Therefore, the high school curriculums should include indoor air pollution topics.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the trends and changes in the number and rates of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and prevalence of cataract in China between 1990 and 2019, and to predict the trends of cataract burden from 2020 to 2030. METHODS The Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) database was employed to collect the data on DALYs and the prevalence of cataract in China, which was distinguished by age and sex during the past three decades from 1990 to 2019, and then changes in the number and rates of cataract from 2020 to 2030 were predicted. All data were analyzed by the R program (version 4.2.2) and GraphPad Prism 9.0 statistics software. RESULTS The number of DALYs of cataract increased from 449 322.84 in 1990 to 1 087 987.61 in 2019, number of cataract cases increased from 5 607 600.94 in 1990 to 18 142 568.96 in 2019. The age-standardized DALY rates (ASDR) generally increased slightly [estimated annual percentage change (EAPC=0.1; 95%CI: -0.24 to 0.45), age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPR) also increased (EAPC=0.88; 95%CI: 0.6 to 1.15). Cataract burden increased with age and female gender. Among the causes of cataract, air pollution was the most important, followed by smoking, high fasting plasma glucose, and high body mass index (BMI). The burden of cataract is predicted to grow persistently from 2020 to 2030, the number of DALYs and prevalence for cataract will rise to 2 336 431 and 43 698 620 respectively by 2030, the ASDR is predicted to be 85/100 000 and ASPR will be 1586/100 000 in 2030, females will still be at greater risk of suffering from cataract than males. CONCLUSION The burden of cataract in China kept rising from 1990 to 2019. Increasing age and female gender are risk factors for cataract. Air pollution, smoking, high fasting plasma glucose, and high BMI are associated with cataract. The burden of cataract in China will gradually increase from 2020 to 2030, the elderly women in particular need attention. Our results may be of help for providing reference strategies to reduce cataract burden in the near future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Household air pollution is the major public health problem in developing countries. Pregnant women spent the majority of their time at home and are the most affected population by household air pollution. Exploring the perception of pregnant women on adverse health effects is important to enhance the mitigation strategies. Therefore, this study aim to explore the pregnant women's perceptions about health effects of household air pollution in rural Butajira, Ethiopia. METHODS A phenomenological qualitative study design was conducted among 15 selected pregnant women. All interviews were carried out at the participants´ house and audio-recorded while housing and cooking conditions were observed and appropriate notes were taken for each. The collected data were transcribed verbatim and translated into the English language. Then, the data were imported into Open code software to manage the overall data coding processes and analyzed thematically. RESULTS Study participants perceived that respiratory problems such as coughing, sneezing and asthma and eye problem were the major health problem caused by household air pollution among pregnant women. Study participants also mentioned asphyxiated, abortion, reduces weight, and hydrocephalus was caused by household air pollution on the foetus. Study participants perceived that financial inability, spouse negligence, autonomy and knowledge level of the women were the barriers to tackling household air pollution. Study participant also suggested that opening the door and window; using improved cookstove and reduce workload were the perceived solution for household air pollution. CONCLUSIONS This study explores pregnant women's perceptions on health effects of household air pollution. The finding of this study was important to deliver suitable intervention strategies to mitigate household air pollution. Therefore, educating the women on way of mitigating household air pollution, improving existing structure of the house and minimize the time to stay in the kitchen is important to mitigate household air pollution exposure.

Abstract
Environmental lead exposure poses risks to children' health, thus exposure sources and pathways identification remain important concern and research scope. Due to sharing the same environment, domestic animals, especially dogs, have been used as useful sentinels to identify human lead exposure. However, more evidence is needed on whether domestic dogs could be used to identify the lead exposure pathways and sources of children. Thus, this study investigated the dietary habits, behaviors, and household environment of children and dogs in a typical coal-fired area in China. The lead levels and lead isotope ratios (Acronym: LIRs, expressed as 208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb) in dogs' and children's blood, as well as in environmental media (food, PM2.5, indoor/outdoor dust, drinking water and soil) were measured to explore the predominant lead pollution sources and exposure pathways of children. The results showed that the LIRs of children's blood (208Pb/206Pb = 2.0703 ± 0.0076, 207Pb/206Pb = 0.8501 ± 0.0052) were similar to those of dogs' blood (208Pb/206Pb = 2.0696 ± 0.0085, 207Pb/206Pb = 0.8499 ± 0.0052), as well as similar to the LIRs of environmental media, i.e. children's food (208Pb/206Pb = 2.0731 ± 0.0057, 207Pb/206Pb = 0.8491 ± 0.0036) and coal (208Pb/206Pb = 2.0683 ± 0.017, 207Pb/206Pb = 0.8515 ± 0.01). Children and dogs had similar lead exposure pathways, but the contributions of each exposure pathway were different, i.e., 83.1% vs. 76.9% for children and dogs via food ingestion, 1.4% vs. 5.6% via particulate matter exposure, and 15.5% vs. 17.5% via household dust exposure, respectively. The contribution of food via ingestion to lead exposure remains dominant, and coal combustion is a main lead exposure source for children and domestic dogs.
