The impact of digital governance on the health of rural residents: the mediating role of governance efficiency and access to information

Background

Digital transformation in rural areas has become a key policy priority worldwide. China is also implementing a digital village strategy and actively promoting the digital transformation of rural governance to improve the well-being of rural residents. The literature suggests that digital governance is linked to health, but the mechanisms behind this relationship remain unclear.

Methods

Using data from the 2021 China Land Economic Survey (CLES), this paper examines the impact of digital governance on the health, longevity, and mental health of rural residents. To enhance the robustness of the conclusions, this paper also introduces a dual machine learning model to solve the endogeneity problem of the model.

Conclusion and discussion

This study concludes that digital governance has a significant positive impact on the health of rural residents. This finding remains consistent even after addressing endogeneity issues and conducting numerous robustness tests. Mechanistic analyses indicate that digital governance can enhance rural residents' health by improving village governance (environmental governance) and increasing the efficiency of access to personal information. Further analysis reveals that digital governance significantly increases the life expectancy of rural residents but that its effect on mental health is not significant. This study provides new insights into how digital governance affects health, with important implications for health policy development.

Influence of living settings on physical activity levels and volition in exercise in male and female university students

This study explored the influence of living settings on physical activity (PA) levels and volition in exercise and their correlation, considering sex differences. Five hundred and sixty-six university students (261 rural and 305 urban) from Calabria region (Italy) attending universities courses filled an online survey where Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and Volition in Exercise Questionnaire were administered. Rural females (RF) showed lower PA levels and self-confidence than rural males (RM) (p<0.01). Postponing training and unrelated thoughts were higher in RF than RM (p<0.01 and p<0.05 respectively). PA levels, self-confidence and coping with failure were lower in urban females (UF) than urban males (UM) (p<0.01), Postponing training and unrelated thoughts were higher in UF than UM (p<0.01 and p<0.05). In RF and UF, PA levels positively correlated with self-confidence (Rho = 0.397) and coping with failure (Rho = 0.330), whereas negatively correlated with postponing training (Rho = -0.487) and unrelated thoughts (Rho = -0.283). In RM and UM, PA levels positively correlated with self-confidence (Rho = 0.270) and coping with failure (Rho = 0.258), whereas it negatively correlated with postponing training (Rho = -0.285). PA levels positively correlated with reasons (Rho = 0.260) only in UM. We showed for the first time the relationship between PA and volition factors considering the living setting in university students. Sex differences were observed in some volition facilitators and PA levels independently by the living context.

An empirical study on social network analysis for small residential communities in Gangwon State, South Korea

Social Network Analysis (SNA) provides a dynamic framework for examining interactions and connections within networks, elucidating how these relationships impact behaviors and outcomes. This study targeted small residential communities in Gangwon State, South Korea, to explore network formation theories and derive strategies for enhancing health promotion services in rural communities. Conducted in 12 small residential areas, the survey led to a network categorization model distinguishing networks as formal, informal, or non-existent. Key findings demonstrated that demographic and socio-economic factors, specifically age, income, living environment, leisure activities, and education level, significantly influence network formation. Importantly, age, environmental conditions, satisfaction with public transportation, and walking frequency were closely associated with the evolution of formal networks. These results highlight the importance of early community network assessments, which must consider distinct network traits to develop effective health promotion models. Utilizing SNA early in the assessment process can improve understanding of network dynamics and optimize the effectiveness of health interventions.

[Prevalence of noncommunicable diseases and risk factors in rural population of San Luis, Argentina]

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular risk factors in a rural population in the province of San Luis, Argentina. Cross-sectional study developed between September and November 2017 with 18-year-old inhabitants and more than four towns in the Juan Martín de Pueyrredón department, San Luis. The participants answered questions by self-report on sociodemographic aspects, habits, psychosocial and risk factors for non-communicable diseases; physical measurements, FINDIRSC questionnaire and blood sample extraction were performed. Univariate estimates stratified by sex with their 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were obtained. We worked with sample expansion factors; crude and adjusted prevalences were calculated. The population consisted of 424 men (52.5%, 95%CI: 46.0-58.9) and 384 women (47.5%, 95%CI: 41.1-54.0). The adjusted prevalences for both sexes (by self-report) were: DM 11.8% (95%CI: 8.2-15.4); arterial hypertension (AHT): 35.5% (95% CI: 31.0-40.1); high cholesterol: 20.3% (CI 16.0-24.7). Males had significantly higher desirable HDL cholesterol and elevated blood pressure than females; women abdominal obesity in greater magnitude. 16.4% (95% CI: 11.0 - 23.6) had a high-very high risk of developing type 2 DM in the next 10 years. The adjusted prevalences of DM, hypertension, and high cholesterol were lower than those of the urban population of the province of San Luis. We highlight the pioneering contribution of this work to the knowledge of the health profile of rural communities in Argentina.

Influence of food environment on ultra-processed drinks consumption among an economically vulnerable population in a metropolitan area in Brazil: A multilevel analysis

Ultra-processed drinks (UPDs) consumption is increasing, and this intake has been associated with the risk of illness and death. Data on individuals (n = 430) and food stores (n = 231) were collected in an economically vulnerable area in Recife-Brazil, and multilevel regression models were applied to assess the association between UPDs consumption with food environment characteristics. The results show 29.5% of individuals consume UPDs, higher UPD consumption was significantly associated with age (OR: 0.96), lower educational levels (OR:2.06), high density of stores predominantly selling UPFs (OR:2.34) and lower availability of FV in stores (OR:0.49). The applied methodology can inform food environment interventions to reduce UPDs consumption.

The Impact of Physical Activity Levels and Functional Fitness Status on the Quality of Life Perceived by Older Adults Living in Rural and Urban Areas: The Portuguese Inland Case

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is influenced by several factors, such as living place, physical activity (PA), and functional fitness levels. Evidence shows that functional fitness and PA levels are strongly associated with positive HRQoL, especially in the older population. However, the impact of the living place has not been investigated as an influencing variable in this context. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the HRQoL, PA, and functional fitness of older adults living in rural and urban areas of Portugal. A cross-sectional study was performed with community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and over (n = 261) living in the city of Guarda. The participants were assessed for sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical health, HRQoL, PA levels, and functional fitness status. The results showed that rural residents presented higher scores of HRQoL and functional fitness than older individuals living in urban areas. Regression models showed that functional fitness variables influence the HRQoL overall score and mental and physical subcomponents of HRQoL, regardless of the living place. In contrast, PA levels only influenced the HRQoL score in rural residents. The findings suggest that intervention programs to improve the physical health, quality of life, and well-being of the older population need to consider the country’s different geographical areas.
