Abstract
Background Sleep disturbance is an immune-related disease, and the gut-brain axis is an important regulatory pathway. This cross-sectional study was designed to address these associations between complement C4, habitual constipation, and sleep disturbance and presents a reference for prevention and treatment of sleep disturbance. Methods Based on the China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep disturbance following standard procedure. Complement C4 and habitual constipation were assessed between groups with sleep disturbance and without sleep disturbance by enzyme colorimetry and Intestinal Health Questionnaire, respectively. Results A total of 1621 participants were included with the prevalence of sleep disturbance being 30.41%. Complement C4 was significantly lower (24 mg/dL versus 25 mg/dL, P < 0.05) and habitual constipation was significantly higher (19.88% versus 14.27%, P < 0.05) in the group with sleep disturbance than in the group without sleep disturbance. Multiple linear regression models detected a negative association between complement C4 and PSQI (β: -0.030, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.052--0.008, P < 0.05) and a positive association between habitual constipation and PSQI (β: 0.610, 95% CI: 0.145-1.074, P < 0.05). In the multiple logistic regression models, complement C4 was negatively associated with sleep disturbance (odds ratio: 0.978, 95% CI: 0.963-0.993, P < 0.05), and habitual constipation was positively associated with sleep disturbance (odds ratio: 1.609, 95% CI: 1.194-2.168, P < 0.05). Conclusion The present study provides epidemiological evidence that sleep disturbance is negatively associated with complement C4 and positively associated with habitual constipation in oldest-old and centenarian Chinese adults, which expands the knowledge for the associations between complement C4, habitual constipation, and sleep disturbance in the elderly population and provides new insights and pathways on the treatment of sleep disturbance by regulating immune factors and intestinal function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High sodium intake has been linked to various health outcomes; however, its association with constipation remains unclear, particularly in adult males. This population-based study aimed to investigate the association between daily sodium intake and constipation using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010. METHODS Using data from the NHANES database spanning from 2005 to 2010, a cross-sectional study including 7116 adult male participants from the United States was performed to assess the relationship between daily sodium intake and constipation. Multivariable logistic regression models were used, adjusting for various potential confounders, to evaluate this association. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) methods were applied to explore potential nonlinear trends in the association, and subgroup analyses were conducted through forest plots to examine interactions among different subgroups (P for interaction). RESULTS The study found that an increase in daily sodium intake was significantly associated with a reduced risk of constipation. Trend analysis indicated a statistically significant trend across all models, where increased daily sodium intake was associated with lower constipation risk, with (OR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.71 ~ 0.85; P < 0.001) in Model 1; (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.73 ~ 0.87; P < 0.001) in Model 2; and (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.69 ~ 0.97; P = 0.023) in Model 3 (P for trend < 0.05 in all models). On the contrary, RCS analysis did not reveal a nonlinear association between daily sodium intake and constipation risk (P = 0.528). Subgroup analysis further supported a consistent negative association between daily sodium intake and constipation risk across different subgroups, with no significant interactions found (all P values > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates a negative association between daily sodium intake and constipation risk among adult males, suggesting that sodium intake might influence intestinal function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary adjustment has consistently been regarded as an effective and health way for both the prevention and treatment of constipation. Several researches suggest a significant correlation between dietary flavonoids intake and gut microbiota, while the relationship between dietary flavonoids and constipation has not been reported. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between flavonoids intake and constipation. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis was based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected from 2007 to 2010. The dietary flavonoid and subclasses intake value were obtained from the United States Department of Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), while constipation was defined using the stool consistency or frequency. Relationships between total and six main flavonoid subclasses intake constipation were investigated using weighted logistic regression approach. RESULTS The study revealed a negative association between isoflavones, anthocyanidins, flavanones, flavones, flavonols, and total flavonoid intake and constipation, with significant p-trends of < 0.05. Following multivariate adjustment, decreased odds of constipation could still be observed in the highest quartiles of anthocyanidins compared with those in the reference quartiles (p-value = 0.03). Ln-transformed anthocyanidins exhibited a statistically significant nonlinear association with constipation, displaying an inverted U-shaped pattern. When anthocyanidins intake exceeded 0.92 mg, the rate of constipation trended downward with increases in anthocyanidins intake. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that higher dietary flavonoids intake can reduce the incidence of constipation in the adult US population. In addition, the negative association between anthocyanin intake and constipation was more stable compared to other subclasses.

Abstract
Background Prucalopride (1 or 2 mg once daily) is approved for treating adults with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). Objectives We determined the effect of age, body mass index (BMI), and renal function on the efficacy and safety of prucalopride in adults with CIC. Design Data were pooled from six 12-week, phase III-IV clinical studies in adults who received prucalopride (1 or 2 mg once daily) or placebo for CIC. Methods Adults were stratified by age (<50; 50-64; ⩾65 years), BMI (underweight/healthy weight, <25 kg/m2; overweight, 25 to <30 kg/m2; obese, ⩾30 kg/m2), and renal function (normal renal function, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ⩾90 mL/min/1.73 m2; mild renal impairment, eGFR 60 to <90 mL/min/1.73 m2; moderate renal impairment, eGFR 30 to <60 mL/min/1.73 m2). The primary efficacy endpoint was the proportion of patients with a mean of ⩾3 complete spontaneous bowel movements/week over 12 weeks. Safety data were evaluated descriptively. Results Of 2484 patients stratified by age (prucalopride, n = 1237; placebo, n = 1247), 1402, 708, and 374 were aged <50, 50-64, and ⩾65 years, respectively. Of 2482 patients stratified by BMI (prucalopride, n = 1237; placebo, n = 1245), 1425, 713, and 344 were underweight/healthy weight, overweight, and obese, respectively. Of 2474 patients stratified by renal function (prucalopride, n = 1233; placebo, n = 1241), 1444, 869, and 161 had normal renal function, mild renal impairment, and moderate renal impairment, respectively. More prucalopride-treated than placebo-treated patients achieved the primary efficacy endpoint. The difference was significant for all subgroups, except for the obese and moderate renal impairment subgroups. More prucalopride-treated than placebo-treated patients reported treatment-related adverse events in most subgroups. Conclusion Prucalopride demonstrated efficacy in adults with CIC, irrespective of age, BMI, and renal function. No unexpected safety concerns were identified. Abstract
Background The ketogenic diet (KD) is widely used for weight loss in obese individuals; however, its potential impact on hypertension risk remains uncertain. Methods We used cross-sectional data from the 2007-2018 to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to investigate the association between the dietary ketogenic ratio (DKR) and hypertension prevalence. Dietary intake information was obtained through a comprehensive 24-h dietary recall interview. The DKR values were computed using a specialized formula. Multiple logistic regression analysis was employed to examine this association, whereas nonlinear relationships were assessed using restricted cubic splines. Inflection points were determined using two-piecewise linear regression analysis. Subgroup analyses based on age were also performed. Results In a fully adjusted multivariate logistic regression model accounting for confounding variables, DKR was significantly associated with hypertension (OR, 1.24; 95 % CI: 1.00-1.53; P = 0.045). Moreover, individuals in the highest quartile of DKR exhibited a significantly elevated risk of hypertension compared with those in the lowest quartile (OR, 1.15; 95 % CI: 1.07-1.24; P < 0.001). Additionally, restricted cubic spline analysis revealed a linear relationship between DKR and the risk of hypertension, with a turning point identified at 3.4 units on the measurement scale employed for this study's purposes. Subgroup analyses indicated that this association between DKR and hypertension was particularly pronounced among individuals aged ≥40 years, especially those age group-40-60. We further observed that a multivariate linear regression analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between DKR and DBP in a fully adjusted model (β, 0.42; 95 % CI: 0.12-0.87; P = 0.018), indicating that as DKR increased, there was an accompanying increase in DBP. However, no significant correlation was found between SBP and DKR (β, 0.11; 95 % CI: -0.37-0.59; P = 0.655). Conclusion The KD may enhance susceptibility to hypertension in middle-aged and elderly populations in the United States, exhibiting a strong association with elevated diastolic blood pressure, while no significant correlation was observed with increased systolic blood pressure.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies have suggested a link between dietary micronutrient intake and the onset of constipation. Nevertheless, there has not been much research done on the potential relationship between vitamin B6 and constipation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether dietary vitamin B6 consumption and chronic constipation are related among adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Method The study made use of information from the 2009-2010 NHANES health and nutrition survey. Respondents' dietary information was gathered using 24-h dietary recalls. A range of statistical techniques, including as interaction tests, subgroup analyses, and curve fitting analyses, were used to examine the connection between dietary vitamin B6 intake and chronic constipation. Result This study included 3,643 patients, with 270 (7.41%) diagnosed with persistent constipation. A fully adjusted multiple logistic regression analysis found that increasing dietary vitamin B6 consumption (OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.68-0.89) was linked to a lower incidence of constipation, with significance at p < 0.05. After accounting for numerous factors, the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for the third tertile compared to the reference group (first tertile) were 0.85 (0.74, 0.98), with statistical significance at p < 0.05. Furthermore, subgroup analysis and interaction assessments revealed a substantial negative link between vitamin B6 intake and the occurrence of constipation, particularly in males and alcohol drinkers (all p-values were less than 0.05). Conclusion This study found an inverse connection between vitamin B6 consumption and the prevalence of persistent constipation. More extensive prospective trials are needed to fully examine the long-term influence of vitamin B6 on persistent constipation.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between ideal cardiovascular health (CVH), as assessed using the Life's Essential 8 (LE8), and bowel conditions. Methods This cross-sectional study selected 11,108 participants aged ≥20 years from 2005 to 2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. LE8 scores (range 0-100) were measured according to American Heart Association definitions and were divided into health behavior and health factor scores. Bowel conditions including chronic diarrhea, constipation, and fecal incontinence were diagnosed by the Bowel Health Questionnaire. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were used for correlation analysis. Results Logistic regression results showed that LE8 scores were negatively associated with chronic diarrhea and fecal incontinence, but the difference with chronic constipation was not statistically significant. The health behaviors subscale was also negatively correlated with chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation, and fecal incontinence, but health factors were negatively related to chronic diarrhea and fecal incontinence and positively related to chronic constipation. The RCS was consistent with the trend of the logistic regression findings. Sensitivity analyses reconfirmed these outcomes. Conclusion LE8 is highly associated with chronic diarrhea and fecal incontinence, not with chronic constipation. Encouraging optimization of CVH levels may be beneficial for bowel disorders, and prevention of bowel disorders may enhance CVH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) may have a negative impact on bowel habits. We aimed to assess the association between UPF and unprocessed or minimally processed food (MPF) intake and bowel habits among adults in the United States (U.S.). METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2010). We used two 24-hour dietary recalls and, based on the Nova classification, calculated intakes of UPFs and MPFs. Constipation and diarrhea were defined using the Bristol Stool Form Scale and stool frequency. We performed survey-weighted logistic regression and substitution analysis to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Among 12,716 U.S. adults, there were 1290 cases of constipation and 1067 cases of diarrhea. Median UPF and MPF intakes were 26.5% and 66.2% of total grams per day, respectively. Greater UPF consumption (in % gram/d) was associated with higher odds of constipation (adjusted OR [aORQ4 vs Q1], 2.20; 95% CI, 1.76-2.74) (Ptrend < .001) but not diarrhea (aORQ4 vs Q1, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.62-1.09) (Ptrend = .12). Increased MPF consumption was associated with lower odds of constipation (aORQ4 vs Q1, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.370-0.57) (Ptrend < .001). Associations with constipation were attenuated after adjusting for diet quality (aORQ4 vs Q1, UPF, 1.53; MPF, 0.69). Substituting 10% of UPF intake with an equivalent proportion of MPFs was associated with lower odds of constipation (aOR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.87-0.93). CONCLUSIONS UPF intake was associated with higher odds of constipation, whereas the odds were lower with greater MPF consumption. The effect of food processing on bowel habits was independent of diet quality.

Abstract
The impact of the ketogenic diet (KD) on overall mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality remains inconclusive.This study enrolled a total of 43,776 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2001 and 2018 to investigate the potential association between dietary ketogenic ratio (DKR) and both all-cause mortality as well as cardiovascular disease(CVD) mortality.Three models were established, and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was employed to examine the correlation. Furthermore, a restricted cubic spline function was utilized to assess the non-linear relationship. In addition, subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed.In the adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression model, a significant inverse association was observed between DKR and all-cause mortality (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.63-0.9, P = 0.003). However, no significant association with cardiovascular mortality was found (HR = 1.13; CI = 0.79-1.6; P = 0.504). Additionally, a restricted cubic spline(RCS) analysis demonstrated a linear relationship between DKR and all-cause mortality risk. In the adult population of the United States, adherence to a KD exhibits potential in reducing all-cause mortality risk while not posing an increased threat of CVD-related fatalities.

Abstract
Background This investigation aimed to analyze the association between dietary vitamin E intake and constipation prevalence among United States adults. Methods Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this cross-sectional study assessed vitamin E intake through 24-h dietary recall and defined constipation based on the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS). Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin E intake and constipation, with results presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Stratified analyses were conducted based on covariates such as age, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were generated to explore the potential linear or non-linear association. Results Individuals experiencing constipation exhibited lower vitamin E intake compared to those without constipation. Weighted multivariate logistic regression models demonstrated a negative correlation between vitamin E intake and constipation risk, even after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Further RCS analysis revealed a statistically significant non-linear inverse relationship between vitamin E intake and constipation risk (p-value for non-linearity = 0.0473). Conclusion Our findings suggest an independent inverse association between vitamin E intake and constipation prevalence in United States adults. Prospective research is needed to validate these observations.

Abstract
Dietary micronutrients are integral to the development and progression of constipation; however, the specific relationship between dietary copper intake and constipation has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to examine the correlation between dietary copper intake and constipation among U.S. adults, thereby offering novel insights and recommendations for the clinical management and prevention of constipation. Bowel health data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2010 were analyzed. Subjects' dietary information was collected through questionnaire records. Multivariate logistic regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and curve fitting analysis were used to assess the correlation between dietary copper intake and chronic constipation. After adjusting for all possible confounders, each unit increase in dietary copper intake (converted to natural logarithms) was associated with a 20% reduction in the prevalence of constipation (OR = 0.80; 95% CI 0.65-0.98; P = 0.037). The interaction P-values for all subgroups were greater than 0.05, indicating that the findings were stable and consistent across subgroups. The present study showed a significant negative association between dietary copper intake and chronic constipation in adults. This finding raises clinical and healthcare professionals' awareness of the impact of dietary trace elements on intestinal health and has important implications for the development of personalized meal plans and rational supplementation of trace copper in patients with constipation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores and constipation among a sample of adults in the United States. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from adult participants in the 2005 to 2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (ie, "NHANES"). Self-reported information was used to identify cases of constipation. The DII was used to assess inflammatory potential of the diet. Odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% CIs for the association between the DII and constipation were determined using multivariate logistic regression modeling. Stratified analyses explored whether there was effect modification to influence the relationship between DII and constipation. RESULTS Of 8272 subjects, 759 reported constipation, and 7513 did not, corresponding to a prevalence of 9.2%. After adjusting for age, gender, race/ethnicity, marital status, education level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), hypertension, stroke, diabetes, energy intake, carbohydrate intake, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) use. Compared with lower DII scores group T1 (-5.28 to ≤0.72), the adjusted OR values for DII scores and constipation in T2 (>0.72 to ≤2.50) and T3 (>2.50 to 5.24) were 1.27 (95% CI: 1.02-1.58, P=0.029) and 1.43(95% CI: 1.14-1.8, P=0.002). Subgroup analyses showed that there were effect modification of gender and physical activity factors on DII scores and constipation. CONCLUSIONS Results of this cross-sectional study suggest that a higher dietary inflammatory index score was associated with increased risk of constipation after adjustment for confounding in a multivariable analysis. gender and physical activity were found to be an effect modifier of this relationship.

Abstract
Background/Aims Previous studies have shown that diet and physical activity can influence constipation. However, the combined effect of diet and physical activity on constipation remains unclear. Methods Constipation was defined based on stool consistency and frequency, while overall diet quality was assessed using Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 scores. Participants were categorized into low (metabolic equivalent [MET]-min/wk < 500) and high physical activity groups (MET-min/wk ≥ 500). The association between diet and constipation across physical activity groups was analyzed using survey logistic regression and restricted cubic splines. Results Higher HEI-2015 scores were associated with reduced constipation risk in the high physical activity group when constipation was defined by stool consistency (odds ratio [OR], 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97-0.99). However, in the low physical activity group, increased HEI-2015 scores did not significantly affect constipation risk (OR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.97-1.05). Similar results were found when constipation was defined based on stool frequency. In the high physical activity group, increased HEI-2015 scores were significantly associated with a reduced constipation risk (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.94-0.98). Conversely, in the low physical activity group, increased HEI-2015 scores did not affect the risk of constipation (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.90-1.03). Conclusions Our findings suggest that a higher HEI-2015 score is negatively associated with constipation among individuals with high physical activity levels but not among those with low physical activity levels. This association was consistent when different definitions of constipation were used. These results highlight the importance of combining healthy diet with regular physical activity to alleviate constipation.

Abstract
Background While the intake of larger quantities of vegetables has been linked to a reduction in constipation risk, which vegetables in particular underlie this risk reduction remains incompletely understood. As such, the present study was developed to explore correlations between the intake of particular vegetable types and the risk of constipation. Methods This cross-sectional analysis was based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected from 2005-2010. Classifications and intake assessments for different vegetables were assessed with the Food Patterns Equivalents Database (FPED), while stool frequency or stool consistency was used to define constipation. Relationships between the intake of particular vegetable components and constipation were assessed through a weighted logistic regression approach. Subgroup and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression analyses were further employed to explore associations between specific vegetable subtypes and constipation. Results This study included 13,860 eligible subjects, of whom 1,405 and 12,455 were respectively classified into the constipated and non-constipated groups. Following multivariate adjustment, the intake of non-starchy vegetables including orange, red, dark green, and other vegetables was found to be positively associated with a reduction in constipation risk. In contrast, constipation was unrelated to total starchy vegetable or potato intake. Tomatoes, in particular, were associated with a marked decrease in constipation risk (odds ratios: 0.80, 95% confidence interval: 0.71-0.91). These results were confirmed through RCS and subgroup analyses. Conclusion Non-starchy vegetables, particularly tomatoes, were found to be associated with a pronounced reduction in constipation risk, which was unaffected by the intake of potatoes or starchy vegetables.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress is acknowledged as a pivotal factor in the intricate pathophysiological processes and pathogenesis of constipation. Modifying dietary patterns can elevate in vivo antioxidant biomarker levels, consequently mitigating oxidative stress. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) provides a dependable scoring mechanism for quantifying the potential antioxidant capacity of diets. The association between CDAI levels and the risk of constipation remains uncertain. Purpose To investigate the potential correlation between CDAI and constipation, aiming to improve constipation management through dietary guidance. Methods A total of 11,165 adults aged ≥20 years, drawn from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We evaluated the correlation between CDAI levels and the risk of constipation through three weighted logistic regression models. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was employed to assess nonlinear trends, and stratified analyses were conducted. Results After adjusting for all confounding variables, the findings revealed an association between CDAI and constipation [OR = 0.937; 95% CI (0.892, 0.984), p = 0.012]. Moreover, individuals in the highest quartile of CDAI demonstrated a 40.1% lower likelihood of experiencing constipation compared to those in the lowest quartile [OR = 0.599; 95% CI (0.382, 0.939), p = 0.027]. The RCS analysis indicated a linear relationship between CDAI and constipation (P-non-linear =0.1016). Subgroup analysis by gender revealed a negative correlation in the male population [OR = 0.871; 95% CI (0.801, 0.947), p = 0.002], with men in the highest CDAI quartile exhibiting a 59.8% lower likelihood of experiencing constipation compared to those in the lowest quartile [OR = 0.402; 95% CI (0.206, 0.787), p = 0.010]. Furthermore, alterations in selenium [OR = 0.997; 95% CI (0.995, 1.000), p = 0.039] per milligram were independently linked to constipation. In a gender subgroup analysis of a single antioxidant, changes per milligram of vitamin E [OR = 0.904; 95% CI (0.838 to 0.975), p = 0.011] among males were independently associated with constipation. Conclusion The fully adjusted model showed a correlation between CDAI and constipation and a significant correlation in quartiles. Meanwhile, subgroup analysis by gender showed that CDAI was negatively associated with constipation in the male population. Moreover, the findings of this study imply that investigations into antioxidant diets should be contextualized within dietary patterns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zinc has been proven to be effective against periodontitis, and also reported to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This study aims to explore the regulatory effect of zinc intake on the association between periodontitis and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). METHODS This was a cross-sectional study based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Logistic regression model was used to explore the association between zinc-RDA or periodontitis and 10-year ASCVD risk ≥ 20%, and results were shown as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The regulatory effect of zinc intake on the association between periodontitis and 10-year ASCVD risk ≥ 20% was also assessed using logistic regression model. Subgroup analysis was performed based on age, gender, obesity, education level, lipid-lowering therapy, and dental floss. RESULTS 6,075 patients were finally included for analysis. Zinc intake reaching the recommended level (OR = 0.82, 95%CI: 0.69-0.98) and periodontitis (OR = 2.47, 95%CI: 2.04-3.00) were found to be associated with 0.82-fold and 2.47-fold odds of 10-year ASCVD risk ≥ 20%, respectively. In addition, we found that the odds of 10-year ASCVD risk ≥ 20% was lower in patients with zinc intake reaching the recommended level than those without [OR (95%CI): 2.25 (1.81-2.80) vs. 2.72 (2.05-3.62)]. The similar regulatory effect was found in patients with age ≥ 60 years and < 60 years, in male and female, with or without obesity, in different education levels, with or without lipid lowering therapy, and with or without use of dental floss (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study found the regulatory effect of adequate zinc intake on the association between periodontitis and ASCVD, providing guidance for periodontitis patients to decrease the risk of ASCVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous researches have indicated a correlation between the intake of dietary micronutrients and the occurrence of constipation. Nevertheless, the correlation between constipation and vitamin B1 remains uninvestigated. The main aim of this research was to examine the association between chronic constipation and the consumption of vitamin B1 in the diet among adult participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS This study used data from the NHANES, a survey on health and nutrition conducted between 2005 and 2010. The respondents' dietary information was gathered by utilizing the 24-hour dietary records. Various statistical analyses, such as multiple logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and curve-fitting analysis, were employed to investigate the correlation between dietary intake of vitamin B1 and chronic constipation. RESULTS In the trial, there were 10,371 participants, out of which 1,123 individuals (10.8%) were identified as having chronic constipation. Fully adjusted multiple logistic regression analyses showed that increasing dietary intake of vitamin B1 (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.77-0.99) was significantly associated with a reduced risk of constipation. Following adjustment for multiple variables in Model 3, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the third tertile, in comparison to the first tertile (reference group), was 0.80 (0.65, 0.99). In addition, subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed a significant inverse association between vitamin B1 intake and the prevalence of constipation, especially among men, non-hypertensive, and non-diabetic individuals (all P-values less than 0.05). CONCLUSION This research uncovered an inverse correlation between the consumption of vitamin B1 in the diet and the occurrence of chronic constipation. One potential explanation for this phenomenon is that the consumption of vitamin B1 in one's diet is linked to the softening of stools and an augmented occurrence of colonic peristalsis. Additional extensive prospective research is required to thoroughly examine the significance of thiamine in long-term constipation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lack of physical activity (PA), poor dietary habits, or other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors are potential modifiable risk factors for hypertension. It has been sufficiently demonstrated in previous studies that physical activity or healthy dietary patterns can reduce the risk of hypertension. However, no research focused on the joint effects of PA and healthy dietary patterns on hypertension in a representative sample of adults. METHODS We used data collected from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Healthy dietary patterns were assessed with the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015), and PA was measured using the metabolic equivalent minutes per week reported in questionnaires. We created four lifestyle categories based on the HEI-2015 and PA: (1) unhealthy diet and physically inactive (less than recommended PA), (2) healthy diet but physically inactive, (3) unhealthy diet but physically active (recommended PA), (4) healthy diet and physically active. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between joint PA and HEI-2015 and hypertension. RESULTS A total of 24,453 participants were enrolled in the study. Compared with unhealthy diet and physically inactive individuals, only healthy diet and physically active participants (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.77, 95% CI 0.65-0.9) were negatively associated with hypertension, while healthy diet but physically inactive participants (AOR: 0.89, 95% CI 0.76-1.03) and unhealthy diet but physically active participants (AOR: 0.9, 95% CI 0.76-1.06) were not associated with hypertension. CONCLUSION In a representative sample of US adults, our findings suggest that individuals with recommended PA and healthy dietary patterns have a lower risk of hypertension than those with an unhealthy diet or less than recommended PA. Healthy eating habits and regular PA are potential preventive precautions against hypertension.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the association between controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The data on demographic characteristics, physical examination, lifestyle behaviors, comorbidities, medicine use, laboratory values, and energy were extracted. Nutritional status was assessed using CONUT score, and patients were divided into normal nutrition group and malnutrition group. Association between CONUT score and CKD in T2DM patients was assessed using logistic regression analysis, and odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. Subgroup analysis based on age, body mass index (BMI), cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetic retinopathy, and hyperlipidemia was performed. RESULTS A total of 4581 patients were finally included for analysis. In the adjusted model, high CONUT score was found to be associated with the high odds of CKD (OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.05-1.56). Also, high CONUT score was associated with the high odds of CKD in T2DM patients with age ≥ 65 years, with BMI < 25 kg/m2, with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, without CVD, without diabetic retinopathy, with hyperlipidemia, or without hyperlipidemia (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition was associated with the high odds of CKD in T2DM patients, indicating that actively monitoring the nutritional status is important for the management of CKD in T2DM patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic constipation (CC) is a common gut health problem, and the role of live dietary microbes in CC is unclear. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary live microbes consumption and CC. METHODS Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2005-2010), 11,170 adults who completed the 24-h face-to-face dietary recall and bowel health questionnaire were identified. CC was defined by the Bristol Stool Form Scale. Dietary live microbes intake was classified as low, medium, and high. Additionally, combined medium and high categories (MedHi) were analyzed. Multivariate regression models were constructed to assess the association between dietary intake of live microbes and CC. RESULTS In the weighted sample, the age-adjusted CC prevalence was 7.06% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.45, 7.67). In multivariate regression models, after controlling for potential confounders race/ethnicity, sex, body mass index, education, poverty, depression, caffeine intake, and alcohol intake, a significant inverse association between dietary live microbes consumption and CC was observed (odds ratio [OR]: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.61, 0.97, P-trend = 0.061). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that a high dietary live microbes consumption may be associated with lower odds of CC. However, further prospective studies are essential to confirm its effectiveness in reducing CC occurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was to explore the relationship between chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, and frailty in older Americans. METHODS This cross-sectional study selected a total of 4241 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 years and older from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Frailty was measured using a 49-item frailty index, and a frailty index > 0.21 was defined as a frail status. Chronic constipation and chronic diarrhea were defined as the "usual or most common type of stool" by the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) Types 1 and 2 and BSFS Types 6 and 7, respectively. Weighted logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between gut health and frailty status. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were built to assess the association between frailty index and stool frequency. RESULTS Frailty status was associated with higher odds of constipation in an unadjusted model; however, after further adjusting for confounding variables, the relationship between frailty status and constipation was not statistically significant. We discovered a positive correlation between the frailty status and diarrhea after adjustment for all variables. The frailty index showed a U-shaped relationship with stool frequency, and the frailty index was the smallest at a frequency of 10 stools/week. CONCLUSION Negative associations were observed between frailty status and chronic constipation and diarrhea among older adults. Older adults who have a bowel movement frequency of about 10 times per week are the least frail. Future studies are warranted to confirm the causal relationship in this association.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to investigate putative causal effects between constipation and stroke using bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Based on the cross-sectional study, logistic regression models were developed to assess the association between constipation and stroke prevalence. Subsequently, genome-wide association studies statistics were employed to perform MR analysis between constipation and stroke, as well as its subtypes. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was the primary method, complemented by four additional methods, namely weighted median, weighted mode, simple mode, and MR-Egger regression. Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, MR Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier, and MR Steiger test were performed to assess heterogeneity and pleiotropy effects. Results Constipation was associated with a greater risk of stroke even after adjusting for all covariates in logistic regression [odds ratio (OR) = 1.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01-2.09, p = 0.042]. IVW MR analysis revealed that constipation affected large artery atherosclerosis (LAS; IVW OR = 1.5, 95% CI = 1.07-2.104, p = 0.019). No significant or suggestive association was observed with the risk of stroke or its various subtypes in MR analysis. Meanwhile, reverse MR analysis revealed no significant causal relationship between stroke or other stroke subtypes and constipation. The results of sensitivity analyses revealed no significant horizontal pleiotropy affecting causal estimates. Conclusion While cross-sectional studies have established that constipation increases the risk of stroke, this two-sample bidirectional MR analysis revealed a positive correlation between constipation and LAS. However, no such correlation was observed between constipation and stroke, including its various subtypes.

Abstract
Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure has been proven to induce digestive diseases such as hepatic steatosis, cirrhosis, and gastrointestinal cancer, yet little is known about the link between ETS exposure and constipation. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ETS exposure on the risk of chronic constipation in adults aged 20 years or older. This is a cross-sectional study based on population. A total number of 7705 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010 were included. Cotinine, an alkaloid found in tobacco, serves as a reliable and precise biomarker for measuring exposure to ETS. Hence, the categorization of exposure to ETS was conducted based on serum cotinine levels, resulting in four distinct categories. The association between ETS exposure and the risk of constipation was assessed using multivariable restricted cubic spline and logistic regression with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The weighted prevalence of constipation in this study was estimated to be 7.51% based on stool consistency, or 3.11% based on stool frequency. The fully adjusted models indicated a positive correlation between exposure to ETS and constipation as measured by stool frequency, among adults with poor dietary quality (OR (95% CI): moderate exposure: 2.49 (1.05, 5.94); high exposure: 2.36(1.13, 4.95), P for trend = 0.03), while no significant difference was observed in the subgroup with a higher healthy eating index. Furthermore, the log10-transformed serum cotinine level exhibited a non-linear inverted U-shaped association with constipation in individuals with poor dietary quality (P overall = 0.0207, P non-linear = 0.0427). Conversely, a J-shaped non-linear relationship was observed in the subgroup with a higher healthy eating index (P overall = 0.0028, P non-linear = 0.0036). Our results show that ETS exposure appears to be positively associated with stool frequency-related chronic constipation in adults with poor dietary quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary carotenoids have been proven to improve intestinal disorders like inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, yet little is known about the link between dietary carotenoids and constipation. This study aims to examine the relationship between dietary carotenoids intake and constipation, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010. METHODS A total of 11,722 participants were enrolled. Chronic constipation was defined as type 1 (separate hard lumps, like nuts) and type 2 (sausage-like, but lumpy) in the Bristol stool form scale (BSFS). Carotenoids intake was obtained from the average of two 24-hour dietary recall questionnaires (if only one 24-hour was available, we used it) and divided into quartiles (Q). The prevalence of constipation was calculated across men and women individuals. The relationship between dietary carotenoids intake and constipation in men and women was assessed with weighted logistic regression and smoothed curve fitting after adjusting confounders, with results displayed as weighted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The model was further stratified by age, race, and HEI 2015 scores (with median as cutoff) among men and women. RESULTS The total weighted prevalence of chronic constipation in this study was 8.08%, 11.11% in women and 5.18% in men. After multivariable adjustment, compared with the lowest intake, participants with the highest dietary lycopene intake (ORQ4 vs. Q1= 0.55, 95% CI: 0.36-0.84, p for trend = 0.01) and total lycopene intake (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.34-0.80, p for trend = 0.01) were negatively associated with the risk of chronic constipation in men, whereas increased dietary α-carotene intake reduced the risk of chronic constipation in women (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48-0.98, p for trend = 0.04). Smoothing curve fitting further supported these results and provided evidence of dose-response effects. No association was found between other types of carotenoids and chronic constipation in men and women. CONCLUSIONS Increasing lycopene intake may improve bowel function in men while increased α-carotene intake may reduce the risk of chronic constipation in women. Further studies are essential to explore the role that the intake of carotenoids plays in chronic constipation.

Abstract
Objective Current studies on the association between constipation and depression is still insufficient. In this study, we investigated the detailed association between constipation and major depression among American adults. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 12,352 adults aged 20 and older were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2010 for the sample. Constipation was defined as fewer than three defecation frequencies per week. For the assessment of major depression, the validated Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was used. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression models. A subgroup analysis was carried out to ensure that the results were stable. Results Of the 12,352 participants, 430 reported constipation, with a prevalence of 3.5%. Depression was reported in 1030 cases, indicating a prevalence rate of 8.3%. Patients with constipation were significantly more likely to have major depression (20.9%) than those without it (7.9%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, education level, body mass index, vigorous physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking status, poverty income ratio, diabetes, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use, liver disease, heart disease, pulmonary disease, hypertension, arthritis, cancer, dietary fiber intake, moisture intake, total fat intake, carbohydrates intake, and protein intake, constipation is significantly associated with major depression (OR: 2.20, 95%CI: 1.68-2.87, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses by age, sex, dietary intake, risk behaviors, and common complications showed no statistically significant interactions (p > 0.05). Conclusion In conclusion, this study showed that constipation were significantly associated with depression. When treating patients with constipation, it is necessary for clinicians to screen and evaluate depression, and provide timely and effective intervention for patients with depression to avoid further deterioration of the condition.
