Abstract
BACKGROUND Malignant neoplasm of bone and articular cartilage (MNBAC) is one of the causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. To date, there is a lack of detailed studies on the disease burden of MNBAC. METHODS Data on the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of MNBAC from 1990 to 2021 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease study. We estimated the trends in the burden of MNBAC by calculating the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in age-standardized rates by region, country, and social development index. RESULTS Globally, the cases of incidence and deaths of MNBAC showed a significant upward trend. In 2021, the global incidence cases of MNBAC were 91,375.1 (73,780.4-102,469.7), and the number of deaths was 66,114.3 (53,305.4-74,466.9). The age-standardized incidence, mortality, and DALYs rates were all on the rise, with EAPCs of 0.59 (0.51 to 0.68), 0.11 (0.02 to 0.21), and 0.08 (0 to 0.17), respectively. In 2021, China had the highest number of incidence cases and deaths. Two peaks in incidence cases and deaths were observed in the 15-19 and 65-69 age groups, with incidence rates and death rates generally increasing with age, and higher in males than females. The region with the highest incidence cases, deaths, and age-standardized incidence rate was East Asia, while Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest age-standardized mortality, and DALYs rates. CONCLUSION From 1990 to 2021, the global burden of MNBAC has continued to increase, particularly in East Asia, which faces the highest number of incidence cases and deaths, while Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa faces the highest ASMR and ASDR. To mitigate this burden, different regions should develop cancer control actions based on their respective epidemiological characteristics, with a focus on the elderly and adolescents, and control of risk factors.

Abstract
Smoking and tobacco use present significant public health challenges due to their association with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. Despite reductions in smoking rates in many developed countries, global tobacco consumption remains high, especially in developing regions. This review examines the chronic effects of smoking on the respiratory system, detailing the pathological changes in the lungs and the resultant respiratory illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. Additionally, the review explores the impact of smoking on other body systems, including cardiovascular, immune, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive systems. The extensive health implications of smoking emphasize the need for comprehensive public health interventions to reduce tobacco use and mitigate its adverse effects on health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Laryngeal cancers account for one-third of all head and neck cancers. We aimed to report the incidence trends of laryngeal cancer over 2000-2020 in the United States (US), by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and histological subtypes. METHODS Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 22 database were used to identify patients with laryngeal cancer based on the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, version 3. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) for laryngeal cancer, adjusted for reporting delays, were calculated. The Joinpoint Regression Program was then utilized to determine annual percent changes (APCs) and average annual percent changes (AAPCs) in the trends. The analysis excluded data from 2020 to prevent potential bias related to the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS A total of 104,991 cases of laryngeal cancer were identified in the US from 2000 to 2019. Squamous cell carcinoma was the predominant subtype, accounting for 94.53% of cases. Above 73.20% occurred among non-Hispanic whites, with the highest incidence observed among individuals aged 55-69 years (46.71%). The ASIRs were 5.98 and 1.25 per 100,000 population for men and women, respectively. Over 2000-2019, there was a significant reduction in ASIRs for laryngeal cancer in both sexes. Non-Hispanic black men exhibited the highest ASIR (9.13 per 100,000) and the largest decline in the ASIRs over 2000-2019 (AAPC: -3.26%). CONCLUSIONS Laryngeal cancer incidence rates showed a decline from 2000 to 2019, in addition to 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional research is required to investigate risk factors and their influence on incidence rates of laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To provide valuable insights for targeted cancer screening among high-risk patients, we analyzed the global and regional burden of neoplasms resulting from alcohol consumption between 1990 and 2019. METHODS The information used in this study was collected from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 dataset. Initially, the database was used to extract details of mortality rates, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and the number of individuals affected by alcohol-related neoplasms (ARNs). Subsequently, the data were compared by cancer type, sex, age, region, and sociodemographic index. Furthermore, the study involved the calculation and comparison of estimated annual percentage changes in age-standardized DALYs rates (ASDRs) and mortality rates. RESULTS The impact of alcohol on the burden of cancer varied by type of cancer, sex, age, and geographical location. Notably, males exhibited significantly higher ASDRs compared with females. Specifically, in 2019, alcohol emerged as the primary contributor to the number of DALYs associated with esophageal cancer, followed by liver cancer and colorectal cancer in men. Patients aged 50+ years exhibited a heightened rate of DALYs associated with ARNs. From 1990 to 2019, ASDRs among individuals with ARNs did not exhibit a decline in low-middle and low sociodemographic index regions. CONCLUSIONS Alcohol consumption represents a significant risk factor for the burden of cancer, particularly within the realm of digestive system malignancies. Consequently, targeted cancer screening efforts should be directed toward the population that engages in alcohol drinking, with a particular focus on men aged 50 years and older, residing in economically disadvantaged areas.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients may experience symptom distress and depression during and after radiation therapy, which negatively impacts quality of life (QOL). We sought to identify trajectories of symptom distress, depression, social support, and QOL in patients with NPC receiving intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) vs intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT). METHODS A multicenter prospective longitudinal study recruited NPC patients from two leading medical centers in Taiwan. The 121 NPC patients were followed from before RT (T0), at 4 weeks after beginning RT (T1), at 6 weeks of RT or the end of treatment (T2), and at 4 weeks post-RT (T3). Generalized estimating equation analysis was used to identify the factors related to QOL. RESULTS Patients' symptom distress and depression increased from T0, peaked at T2, and decreased at T3. Physical-QOL and psychosocial-QOL decreased from T0 to T2, then increased by T3. Patients who had early-stage cancer, received a lower RT dose, had less symptom distress, and had less depression were more likely to have better QOL. Greater physical-QOL was associated with IMPT receipt, higher education level, early cancer stage, lower radiation dose, less symptom distress, and less depression. Patients who had good physical performance, received a lower radiation dose, had less symptom distress, and had less depression were more likely to have better psychosocial-QOL. CONCLUSION Radiation dose, symptom distress, and depression were the most important factors affecting QOL in patients with NPC. Understanding the factors associated with the trajectory of QOL can guide care during radiation treatment.

Abstract
This study examines the impact of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and aims to provide evidence for preventive measures. The analysis involved a comprehensive scrutiny of CVD-related data from 1990 to 2019. Temporal trends of ASMR and ASDR were assessed using the Estimated Annual Percentage Change (EAPC). Globally, there was an increase in deaths and DALYs from 1990 to 2019, despite decreasing ASMR and ASDR. In 2019, SSB-related CVDs accounted for approximately 193.1 thousand deaths and 3973.2 thousand DALYs. China had the highest number of deaths, Tajikistan had the highest ASMR, and Yemen had the highest ASDR in 2019. ASMR and ASDR increased with age and were higher in males. Deaths and DALYs increased overall, except in high Socio-demographic Index (SDI) regions. ASMR and ASDR declined across SDI regions, with the steepest decline in high SDI regions (EAPC: -2.8 for ASMR, -2.36 for ASDR). ASDR increased in low SDI countries but decreased in high SDI countries. This study provides comprehensive insights into the global burden of SSB-related CVDs. Urgent interventions and policies are needed to reduce SSB consumption and mitigate the impact on cardiovascular health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancers of the head and neck (HN) are heterogeneous tumors with incidence rates varying globally. In Northern Europe oral and oropharyngeal cancers are the most common individual types. Survival for HN varies by individual tumor type but for most of them survival trends are not well known over extended periods of time. METHODS Data for a retrospective survival study were obtained for Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish patients from the NORDCAN database from 1971 to 2020. Relative 1- and 5-year survival rates and 5/1-year conditional survival for years 2-5 were calculated. RESULTS Both 1- and 5-year survival improved for all HN cancers but only marginally for laryngeal cancer. For the other cancers a 50-year increase in 5-year survival was about 30% units for nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal cancers, 20% units for oral cancer and somewhat less for hypopharyngeal cancer. CONCLUSIONS 5-year survival reached about 65% for all HN cancers, except for hypopharyngeal cancer (30%). Human papilloma virus infection is becoming a dominant risk factor for the rapidly increasing oropharyngeal cancer, the prevention of which needs to emphasize oral sex as a route of infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study provided estimates of cancer incidence rate and onset age by Socio-demographic Index (SDI) regions and gender from 2020 to 2040, aiming to clarify the long-term patterns of future cancer onset. METHOD Based on the incidence data from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) 2019 study, we constructed the Bayesian age-period-cohort model to calculate the age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) of cancers from 2020 to 2040. Using the average annual percentage change (AAPC) to quantify the trends of ASIR and the onset age. In addition, the incidences in 2019 were fixed to distinguish the age onset changes caused by demographic and incidence from 2020 to 2040. RESULTS Globally, two-thirds of cancers have escalating trends of incidence rate, and the proportion of cancer weighted average onset age above 60 years old will grow from 62% to 76% between 2020 and 2040. In five SDI regions, the proportion of weighted average onset age above 60 years old will rise above 10% in the next 20 years and increase sequentially with the rise of the SDI level. Preclude sex-specific cancers, the onset age is younger in men than in women in 2040. Rule out the influence of changing demographics, half of cancer's morbidity has a youth-oriented tendency globally, which is concentrated in hormone-related and digestive tract cancer. CONCLUSION From 2020 to 2040, the incidence and onset age changes demonstrate marked geographic and gender variations in the cancer spectrum. Cancer incidence and onset age are predicted to continuously increase worldwide in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Larynx cancer is one of the most common cancers in head and neck, and imposes heavy burden on individual and societies. A comprehensive understanding of the burden of larynx cancer is necessary to improve prevention and control strategies. However, the secular trend of larynx cancer incidence and mortality in China remains unclear. METHODS The incidence and deaths rates of larynx cancer from 1990 to 2019 were collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 database. The temporal trend of larynx cancer was analyzed using a joinpoint regression model. The age-period-cohort model was used to explore the age, period, and cohort effects on larynx cancer and predict future trends up to 2044. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized incidence rate of larynx cancer in China increased by 1.3% (95% CI 1.1 to 1.5) in males, but decreased by 0.5% (95% CI -0.1 to 0) in females. The age-standardized mortality rate of larynx cancer in China decreased by 0.9% (95% CI -1.1 to -0.6) and 2.2% (95% CI -2.8 to -1.7) in males and females, respectively. Among the four risk factors, smoking and alcohol use contributed to a heavier burden compared to occupational exposure to asbestos and sulfuric acid with respect to mortality. Age effects showed that the incidence and deaths of larynx cancer were concentrated in people older than 50 years old. Period effects exerted the most significant effect on larynx cancer incidence for males. In terms of cohort effects, people born in the earlier cohorts presented a higher risk of larynx cancer compared with the later cohorts. From 2020 to 2044, the age-standardized incidence rates of larynx cancer continued to increase in males, whereas the age-standardized mortality rates continued to decrease in both males and females. CONCLUSION The burden of larynx cancer in China has a significant gender difference. The age-standardized incidence rates will continue to increase in males up to 2044. The disease pattern and risk factors of larynx cancer should be comprehensively studied to promote the development of timely intervention measures and relieve the burden effectively.

Abstract
Background Laryngeal carcinoma is one of the most common types of head and neck tumors. The mortality rate in patients with laryngeal cancer has not declined in recent years. Previous studies have shown that laryngeal cancer mortality is related to the extent of laryngeal cancer, the proportion of lymph node metastases, treatment modalities, and postoperative lifestyle habits. Thus, early identifying patients at high risk of laryngeal cancer-specific death is of great clinical importance. However, in the presence of competing risk, the existing survival models based on Cox proportional hazards model may be biased in estimating tumor-specific mortality. In this study, we developed and validated a nomogram based on competitive risk analysis for patients with laryngeal cancer. Methods We used SEER*Stat (Version 4.6.1) software to identify patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database who were diagnosed with laryngeal cancer between 2000 and 2019 as study subjects. The collected data included demographic data, the primary site of laryngeal cancer, the histological type of tumor, tumor size, and other variables. After excluding cases with missing information, the entire cohort was randomly split into a training cohort and a validation cohort at a 7:3 ratio. The training cohort was used in building the model while the validation cohort was used to validate the model. Univariate and multivariate Fine&Gray regression analyses were used to screen statistically significant variables, and the model performance was measured by establishing a consistency index, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), and calibration curves. Results After excluding cases with missing information, 3,805 patients (2,264 in the training cohort and 1,141 in the validation cohort) were included in the study and followed for a median of 16 months. A total of 411 died of laryngeal cancer, and 2,104 patients died from other causes. Among 3,805 patients, the vast majority was male (80.9%), and Caucasian (77.2%), and aged 60-80 years old (58.4%). Conclusions Advanced age and keratinized SCC are risk factors for laryngeal cancer-specific death. These high-risk patients should be given more attention and closer monitoring in clinical practice.
