Abstract
The food and pharmaceutical industries have utilized royal jelly, an alternative medicinal food, as a natural pharmaceutical product since ancient times. Royal jelly has a unique remarkable composition containing lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, hormones, and phenolic compounds. The rapidly expanding functional food market has coincided with the increasing consumer demand for royal jelly. Over the past two decades, royal jelly, a rich source of certain bioactive components, has been used by humans as a functional and nutritious food due to recent studies of the effect of royal jelly in underlying pathogenic processes in a variety of animal models. Scientific evidence has accumulated supporting a wide variety of health-promoting effects from the intake of royal jelly that supports cardiovascular health, immune and antioxidant function, wound healing, blood lipid, and glucose control in addition to antibacterial and antihypertensive effects. The main bioactive ingredients are Major Royal Jelly Proteins (MRJPs), essential oils, fatty acids, peptides, and phenolics, which are thought to have a significant role in the development of honeybee queens. The health-endorsing qualities of royal jelly make it a significant functional ingredient in the food, and cosmetic industry. Apisin is one of the main proteins in royal jelly that has antibacterial properties. Other bioactive ingredients of royal jelly that have multifunctional health-promoting properties include defensin-1, royalisin, apisimin, apidaecin, jelleins, royalactin and 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10HDA) in epigenetic diseases. This review highlights the important role that royal jelly plays as an agent in various fields of medicine, paying special attention to its biological features. Additionally, we discuss royal jelly's composition as a possible therapeutic for vital natural sources of bioactive substances.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a natural food product with nutritional value and anticancer activity. However, their effects on gastric cancer are unclear. Here, we show that treatment with 5-320 μg/mL of RJ, ethanol extract (RJEE), and protein hydrolyzate (RJPH) decreased the viability of MKN-28 gastric cancer cells, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 123.22 μg/mL for RJEE. RJ, RJEE, and RJPH increase the lactate dehydrogenase release rate and change the morphology of the cells, resulting in cell shrinkage, nucleoplasm condensation, and the formation of apoptotic bodies. RJ and its functional components stagnated the cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase, accompanied by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased expression levels of p53 and p21 proteins, caspase-3 activation, and apoptosis. Therefore, RJ, RJEE, and RJPH have potential inhibitory effects on the proliferation of gastric cancer cells.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ), a secretion produced by honeybees, has garnered significant interest for its potential as a therapeutic intervention and functional food supplement. This systematic review aims to synthesize current research on the health benefits, bioactive components, and mechanisms of action of RJ. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, focusing on studies published from 2000 to 2024 (April). Findings indicate that RJ exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-aging effects. Beneficial biological properties of RJ might be due to the presence of flavonoids proteins, peptides, fatty acids. Both preclinical and clinical studies have reported that RJ improves the immune function such as wound healing, and also decreases the severity of chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. The molecular mechanisms underlying these effects involve modulation of signalling pathways such as NF-κB, MAPK, and AMPK. Despite promising results, the review identifies several gaps in the current knowledge, including the need for standardized dosing regimens and long-term safety assessments. Furthermore, variations in RJ composition due to geographic and botanical factors necessitate more rigorous quality control measures. This review underscores the potential of RJ as a multifunctional therapeutic agent and highlights the necessity for further well designed studies to fully elucidate its health benefits and optimize its use as a functional food supplement.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease with joint pain as the main symptom, caused by fibrosis and loss of articular cartilage. Due to the complexity and heterogeneity of osteoarthritis, there is a lack of effective individualized disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs in clinical practice. Chondrocyte senescence is reported to participate in occurrence and progression of osteoarthritis. Here we show that small molecule 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid suppresses cartilage degeneration and relieves pain in the chondrocytes, cartilage explants from osteoarthritis patients, surgery-induced medial meniscus destabilization or naturally aged male mice. We further confirm that 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid exerts a protective effect by targeting the glycosylation site in the Asp_Arg_Hydrox domain of aspartyl β-hydroxylase. Mechanistically, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid alleviate cellular senescence through the ERK/p53/p21 and GSK3β/p16 pathways in the chondrocytes. Our study uncovers that 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid modulate cartilage metabolism by targeting aspartyl β-hydroxylase to inhibit chondrocyte senescence in osteoarthritis. 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid may be a promising therapeutic drug against osteoarthritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The complexity of cancer is intricately linked to its multifaceted biological processes, including the roles of the tumor microenvironment (TME) as well as genetic and metabolic regulation. Histone lactylation has recently emerged as a novel epigenetic modification mechanism that plays a pivotal role in regulating cancer initiation, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. OBJECTIVE This review aims to elucidate the role of histone lactylation in modulating various aspects of tumor biology, including DNA repair mechanisms, glycolytic metabolic abnormalities, functions of non-tumor cells in the TME, and the promotion of tumor inflammatory responses and immune escape. Additionally, the review explores potential therapeutic strategies targeting histone lactylation. METHODS A comprehensive literature review was performed, analyzing recent findings on histone lactylation and its impact on cancer biology. This involved a systematic examination of studies focusing on biochemical pathways, cellular interactions, and clinical implications related to histone lactylation. RESULTS Histone lactylation was identified as a critical regulator of tumor cell DNA repair mechanisms and glycolytic metabolic abnormalities. It also significantly influences the functions of non-tumor cells within the TME, promoting tumor inflammatory responses and immune escape. Moreover, histone lactylation acts as a multifunctional biological signaling molecule impacting immune responses within the TME. Various cell types within the TME, including T cells and macrophages, were found to regulate tumor growth and immune escape mechanisms through lactylation. CONCLUSION Histone lactylation offers a novel perspective on tumor metabolism and its role in cancer development. It presents promising opportunities for the development of innovative cancer therapies. This review underscores the potential of histone lactylation as a therapeutic target, paving the way for new strategies in cancer treatment.

Abstract
10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), which is a unique bioactive fatty acid of royal jelly synthesized by nurse bees for larvae and adult queen bees, is recognized for its dual utility in medicinal and nutritional applications. Previous research has indicated that 10-HDA exerts antitumor effects on numerous tumor cell lines, including colon cancer cells, A549 human lung cancer cells, and human hepatoma cells. The present study extends this inquiry to lymphoma, specifically evaluating the impact of 10-HDA on the SU-DHL-2 cell line. Our findings revealed dose-dependent suppression of SU-DHL-2 cell survival, with an IC50 of 496.8 μg/mL at a density of 3 × 106 cells/well after 24 h. For normal liver LO2 cells and human fibroblasts (HSFs), the IC50 values were approximately 1000 μg/mL and over 1000 μg/mL, respectively. The results of label-free proteomics revealed 147 upregulated and 347 downregulated differentially expressed proteins that were significantly enriched in the complement and coagulation cascades pathway (adjusted p-value = 0.012), including the differentially expressed proteins prothrombin, plasminogen, plasminogen, carboxypeptidase B2, fibrinogen beta chain, fibrinogen gamma chain, and coagulation factor V. The top three hub proteins, ribosomal protein L5, tumor protein p53, and ribosomal protein L24, were identified via protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis. This result showed that the complement and coagulation cascade pathways might play a key role in the antitumor process of 10-HDA, suggesting a potential therapeutic avenue for lymphoma treatment. However, the specificity of the effect of 10-HDA on SU-DHL-2 cells warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Queen bee acid (QBA), which is exclusively found in royal jelly, has anti-inflammatory, antihypercholesterolemic, and antiangiogenic effects. A recent study demonstrated that QBA enhances autophagic flux in the heart. Considering the significant role of autophagy in the development of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, we investigated the effect of pretreatment with QBA on myocardial damage. In an in vivo model, left coronary artery blockage for 30 min and reperfusion for 2 h were used to induce myocardial I/R. In an in vitro model, neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCs) were exposed to 3 h of hypoxia and 3 h of reoxygenation (H/R). Our results showed that pretreatment with QBA increased the cell viability of cardiomyocytes exposed to H/R in a dose-dependent manner, and the best protective concentration of QBA was 100 μM. Next, we noted that QBA pretreatment (24h before H/R) enhanced autophagic flux and attenuated mitochondrial damage, cardiac oxidative stress and apoptosis in NRCs exposed to H/R injury, and these effects were weakened by cotreatment with the autophagy inhibitor bafilomycin A1 (Baf). In addition, similar results were observed when QBA (10 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally into I/R mice 30 min before ischemia. Compared to mice subjected to I/R alone, those treated with QBA had decreased myocardial infarct area and increased cardiac function, whereas, these effects were partly reversed by Baf. Notably, in NRCs exposed to H/R, tandem fluorescent mRFP-GFP-LC3 assays indicated increased autophagosome degradation due to the increase in autophagic flux upon QBA treatment, but coinjection of Baf blocked autophagic flux. In this investigation, no notable adverse effects of QBA were detected in either cellular or animal models. Our findings suggest that QBA pretreatment mitigates myocardial I/R injury by eliminating dysfunctional mitochondria and reducing reactive oxygen species via promoting autophagic flux.

Abstract
Royal jelly is a substance secreted by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of nurse honey bees, serving as crucial nutritional source for young larvae, queen honey bees, and also valuable product for humans. In this study, the effect of the feed supplements on the nutritional composition and qualities of royal jelly was investigated. Two types of royal jelly samples were acquired: one from honey bees fed with sugar syrup as a feed supplement and the other from honey bees fed with honey. The production, harvesting, and storage of all royal jelly samples followed standard procedures. Parameters for quality assessment and nutritional value, including stable carbon isotopic ratio, moisture content, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) level, carbohydrate composition, amino acid composition, and mineral contents, were analyzed. The results revealed that despite variability in moisture content and carbohydrate composition, fructose was lower (2.6 and 4.1 g/100 g as is for sugar-fed and honey-fed royal jelly, respectively) and sucrose was higher (7.5 and 2.7 g/100 g as is for sugar-fed and honey-fed royal jelly, respectively) in the sugar-fed group. The stable isotope ratio (-16.4608‱ for sugar-fed and -21.9304‱ for honey-fed royal jelly) clearly distinguished the two groups. 10-HDA, amino acid composition, and total protein levels were not significantly different. Certain minerals, such as potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus were higher in the honey-fed group. Hierarchical analysis based on moisture, sugar composition, 10-HDA, and stable carbon isotopes categorized the samples into two distinct groups. This study demonstrated that the feed source could affect the nutritional quality of royal jelly.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) represents a prevalent ocular surface disease. The development of effective nutritional management strategies for DED is crucial due to its association with various factors such as inflammation, oxidative stress, deficiencies in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), imbalanced PUFA ratios, and vitamin insufficiencies. Extensive research has explored the impact of oral nutritional supplements, varying in composition and dosage, on the symptoms of DED. The main components of these supplements include fish oils (Omega-3 fatty acids), vitamins, trace elements, and phytochemical extracts. Beyond these well-known nutrients, it is necessary to explore whether novel nutrients might contribute to more effective DED management. This review provides a comprehensive update on the therapeutic potential of nutrients and presents new perspectives for combination supplements in DED treatment.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a highly nutritious natural product with great potential for use in medicine, cosmetics, and as a health-promoting food. This bee product is a mixture of important compounds, such as proteins, vitamins, lipids, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, flavonoids, and polyphenols, that underlie the remarkable biological and therapeutic activities of RJ. Various bioactive molecules like 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), antibacterial protein, apisin, the major royal jelly proteins, and specific peptides such as apisimin, royalisin, royalactin, apidaecin, defensin-1, and jelleins are characteristic ingredients of RJ. RJ shows numerous physiological and pharmacological properties, including vasodilatory, hypotensive, antihypercholesterolaemic, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aging, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, estrogenic, anti-allergic, anti-osteoporotic, and anti-tumor effects. Moreover, RJ may reduce menopause symptoms and improve the health of the reproductive system, liver, and kidneys, and promote wound healing. This article provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of RJ in various diseases, aging, and aging-related complications, with special emphasis on the bioactive components of RJ and their health-promoting properties. The data presented should be an incentive for future clinical studies that hopefully will advance our knowledge about the therapeutic potential of RJ and facilitate the development of novel RJ-based therapeutic opportunities for improving human health and well-being.

Abstract
Succinic (SUA), glutaric (GLA), pimelic (PA), suberic (SUBA), adipic (ADA), azelaic (AZA), and sebacic acids (SA) make up the majority of medium-chain dicarboxylic acids (MCDAs) with chain lengths of C4-C10, and are widely utilised in the chemical, food, textile, pesticide, pharmaceutical, and liquid crystal sectors. The MCDAs' two carboxyl groups provide them with an incredibly broad variety of applications. The focus of significant scientific research now is on the increasingly varied pharmacological effects of MCDAs. However, only a few studies have compared the biological characteristics of MCDAs in the contemporary pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors and thoroughly examined the most recent research and marketing initiatives for MCDAs. This review's objective is to offer a thorough analysis of academic works on MCDAs, to assess the usefulness of these substances' chemical-pharmacological properties for use in the contemporary pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, and to investigate the direction of their possible applications in these two disciplines. In addition, this review investigates how these compounds are metabolised in the human body.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) potentially serve as ideal antimicrobial agents for the treatment of polymicrobial abdominal infections due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and excellent biocompatibility. However, the balance of chain length, positive charges, and hydrophobicity on the antimicrobial activity of AMPs are still far from being optimal. Herein, a series of AMPs ([KX]n-NH2, X = Ile, Leu or Phe, n = 3, 4, 5, or 6) with varied charges and hydrophobicity for the treatment of polymicrobial abdominal infections are designed. Specifically, [KI]4-NH2 peptide exhibits the best in vitro antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains. Based on the good cell biocompatibility, [KI]4-NH2 peptide is found to have negligible in vivo toxicity at the dosage of up to 28 mg kg-1. Furthermore, great in vivo therapeutic efficacy of [KI]4-NH2 peptide against S. typhimurium is demonstrated in the mice abdominal infection model. The design of short sequence of antimicrobial peptides with a charge/hydrophobicity balanced structures provides a simple and efficient strategy for potential clinical applications of antimicrobial peptide-based biomaterials in a variety of bacterial infection diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the efficacy of royal jelly (RJ) and its major fatty acid 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) on ischemic stroke-related pathologies using histological and molecular approaches. METHODS Male rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) to induce ischemic stroke and were supplemented daily with either vehicle (control group), RJ or 10-HDA for 7 days starting on the day of surgery. On the eighth day, rats were sacrificed and brain tissue and blood samples were obtained to analyze brain infarct volume, DNA damage as well as apoptotic, inflammatory and epigenetic parameters. RESULTS Both RJ and 10-HDA supplementation significantly reduced brain infarction and decreased weight loss when compared to control animals. These effects were associated with reduced levels of active caspase-3 and PARP-1 and increased levels of acetyl-histone H3 and H4. Although both RJ and 10-HDA treatments significantly increased acetyl-histone H3 levels, the effect of RJ was more potent than that of 10-HDA. RJ and 10-HDA supplementation also alleviated DNA damage by significantly reducing tail length, tail intensity and tail moment in brain tissue and peripheral lymphocytes, except for the RJ treatment which tended to reduce tail moment in lymphocytes without statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that neuroprotective effects of RJ in experimental stroke can mostly be attributed to 10-HDA.

Abstract
The association between dysbiotic microbiota biofilm and colon cancer has recently begun to attract attention. In the study, the apitherapeutic effects of bee products (honey, bee venom, royal jelly, pollen, perga and propolis) obtained from the endemic Yığılca ecotype of Apis mellifera anatoliaca were investigated. Antibiofilm activity were performed by microplate assay using crystal violet staining to measure adherent biofilm biomass of Escherichia coli capable of forming biofilms. Bee venom showed the highest inhibition effect (73.98%) at 50% concentration. Honey, perga and royal jelly reduced biofilm formation by >50% at all concentrations. The antiproliferation effect on the HCT116 colon cancer cell line was investigated with the water‑soluble tetrazolium salt‑1 assay. After 48 h of honey application at 50% concentration, cell proliferation decreased by 86.51%. The high cytotoxic effects of royal jelly and bee venom are also remarkable. Additionally, apoptotic pathway analysis was performed by ELISA using caspase 3, 8 and 9 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. All bee products induced a higher expression of caspase 9 compared with caspase 8. Natural products that upregulate caspase proteins are promising therapeutic targets for proliferative diseases.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to ascertain the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of royal jelly (RJ) against three microorganisms frequently linked with endodontic infections: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Candida albicans. Materials and Methods Freshly harvested RJ was prepared at different concentrations (20%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, and 1.25%) in distilled water. The microbial cultures of the target organisms were prepared. MIC was determined using a broth dilution technique, monitoring microbial growth. MBC was determined by inoculating agar plates with samples from tubes showing no apparent growth and evaluating the presence of bacterial or fungal growth following the incubation period. Results For S. aureus, the MIC and MBC were 5 mg/ml of RJ. For E. faecalis, the MIC and MBC were 10 mg/ml of RJ. For C. albicans, both MIC and MBC were 10 mg/ml of RJ. The findings demonstrated RJ's potential to inhibit and eliminate these pathogenic microorganisms, making it a potential candidate for endodontic infection control. Conclusion The antimicrobial properties of RJ against S. aureus, E. faecalis, and C. albicans present a promising avenue for enhancing infection control in endodontics. Additional investigations are needed to refine its use in clinical settings, especially in cases with mixed microbial infections.

Abstract
10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) is an important component of royal jelly, known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, blood pressure-lowering, and antiradiation effects. Currently, 10-HDA biosynthesis is limited by the substrate selectivity of acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase, which restricts the technique to a two-step process. This study aimed to develop an efficient and simplified method for synthesizing 10-HDA. In this study, ACOX from Candida tropicalis 1798, which catalyzes 10-hydroxydecanoyl coenzyme A desaturation for 10-HDA synthesis, was isolated and heterologously coexpressed with FadE, Macs, YdiI, and CYP in Escherichia coli/SK after knocking out FadB, FadJ, and FadR genes. The engineered E. coli/AKS strain achieved a 49.8% conversion of decanoic acid to 10-HDA. CYP expression was improved through ultraviolet mutagenesis and high-throughput screening, increased substrate conversion to 75.6%, and the synthesis of 10-HDA was increased to 0.628 g/L in 10 h. This is the highest conversion rate and product concentration achieved in the shortest time to date. This study provides a simple and efficient method for 10-HDA biosynthesis and offers an effective method for developing strains with high product yields.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to investigated the effects of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) on the growth performance, intestinal barrier, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota of chickens challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Methods A total of 240 one-day-old chickens were randomly assigned to five treatment groups: (1) control group (basal diet + saline); (2) LPS group (basal diet + LPS); (3) Chlortetracycline (CTC) group (basal diet containing 75 mg/kg CTC + LPS); (4) 0.1% 10-HDA group (basal diet containing 1 g/kg 10-HDA + LPS); and (5) 0.5% 10-HDA group (basal diet containing 5 g/kg 10-HDA + LPS). All chickens were injected intraperitoneally with 0.5 mg/kg body weight of either LPS or saline at 17, 19, and 21 days of age. Results The results showed that dietary 10-HDA supplementation attenuated the loss in growth performance caused by the LPS challenge (p < 0.05). 10-HDA effectively alleviated LPS-induced intestinal mucosal injury, as evidenced by reduced bleeding, decreased serum diamine oxidase levels (p < 0.05), and increased villus/crypt ratios of the jejunum and ileum (p < 0.05). Dietary treatment with 0.1% 10-HDA reduced the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6; p < 0.05), and increased immunoglobulin (IgA, IgG) and antioxidant enzyme levels (CAT, GSH-px, T-SOD) in the serum of LPS-challenged chickens (p < 0.05). These effects were similar to those observed in the CTC group. Moreover, 0.1% 10-HDA treatment reversed the LPS-induced variations in the mRNA expression of genes related to inflammation, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal tight junctions (p < 0.05). 16S rRNA analysis revealed that 10-HDA supplementation increased the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium and Clostridia_UCG-014 (p < 0.05). Additionally, it decreased the abundance of Clostridia_vadinBB60_group, Eubacterium_nodatum_group, and UC5-1-2E3 (p < 0.05). These changes were correlated with reduced inflammation and improved antioxidant capacity in the LPS-challenged chickens. Conclusion Collectively, dietary 10-HDA supplementation alleviated LPS-induced intestinal mucosal injury and the loss of growth performance through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and gut microbiota modulation activities in chickens. Moreover, 0.1% 10-HDA supplementation had comparable or even better protection for LPS-challenged chickens than supplementation with antibiotics or 0.5% 10-HDA. 10-HDA has the potential to be used as an alternative to antibiotics in protecting the intestinal health and improving the performance of poultry.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a bee product produced by young adult worker bees, composed of water, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, rich in bioactive components with therapeutic properties, such as free fatty acids, mainly 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decenoic acid (10-H2DA) and 10-hydroxydecanoic acid (10-HDA), and major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs), as well as flavonoids, most flavones and flavonols, hormones, vitamins and minerals. In vitro, non-clinical and clinical studies have confirmed its vital role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. This narrative review discusses the possible effects of royal jelly on preventing common complications of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as inflammation, oxidative stress and intestinal dysbiosis, from the viewpoint of predictive, preventive and personalised medicine (PPPM/3PM). It is concluded that RJ, predictively, can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy to prevent and mitigate complications related to NCDs, and the treatment must be personalised.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a significant public health concern in modern society. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), which includes diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity, represents a modifiable risk factor for AD. MetS and AD are interconnected through various mechanisms, such as mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, insulin resistance (IR), vascular impairment, inflammation, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a multi-targeted and safer approach to intervention. Thus, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), a unique hydroxy fatty acid in royal jelly, has shown promising anti-neuroinflammatory, blood-brain barrier (BBB)-preserving, and neurogenesis-promoting properties. In this paper, we provide a summary of the relationship between MetS and AD, together with an introduction to 10-HDA as a potential intervention nutrient. In addition, molecular docking is performed to explore the metabolic tuning properties of 10-HDA with associated macromolecules such as GLP-1R, PPARs, GSK-3, and TREM2. In conclusion, there is a close relationship between AD and MetS, and 10-HDA shows potential as a beneficial nutritional intervention for both AD and MetS.

Abstract
Honey bee products comprise various compounds, including honey, propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen, bee wax and bee venom, which have long been recognized for their pharmacological and health-promoting benefits. Scientists have discovered that periodontal disorders stem from dental biofilm, an inflammatory response to bacterial overgrowth produced by dysbiosis in the oral microbiome. The bee products have been investigated for their role in prevention of oral diseases, which are attributed to a myriad of biologically active compounds including flavonoids (pinocembrin, catechin, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and galangin), phenolic acids (hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, p-coumaric, ellagic, caffeic and ferulic acids) and terpenoids. This review aims to update the current understanding of role of selected bee products, namely, honey, propolis and royal jelly, in preventing oral diseases as well as their potential biological activities and mechanism of action in relation to oral health have been discussed. Furthermore, the safety of incorporation of bee products is also critically discussed. To summarize, bee products could potentially serve as a therapy option for people suffering from a variety of oral disorders.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ), a highly nutritious natural product, has gained recognition for its remarkable health-promoting properties, leading to its widespread use in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries. Extensive investigations have revealed that RJ possesses a broad spectrum of therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, anti-aging, and antibacterial activities. Distinctive among bee products, RJ exhibits a significantly higher water and relatively lower sugar content. It is characterized by its substantial protein content, making it a valuable source of this essential macronutrient. Moreover, RJ contains a diverse array of bioactive substances, such as lipids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, organic acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and hormones. This review aims to provide an overview of current research on the bioactive components present in RJ and their associated health-promoting qualities. According to existing literature, these bioactive substances hold great potential as alternative approaches to enhancing human health. Notably, this review emphasizes the anti-inflammatory properties of RJ, particularly in relation to inflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Furthermore, we delve into the antitumor and antioxidant activities of RJ, aiming to deepen our understanding of its biological functions. By shedding light on the multifaceted benefits of RJ, this review seeks to encourage its utilization and inspire further investigation in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) features include enhanced glycolysis and elevated lactate concentrations. Accumulation of lactate during metabolism provides a precursor for histone lysine modification. This study was designed to determine whether royal jelly acid (RJA) acts against HCC through the lactate modification pathway. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The effects of RJA on Hep3B and HCCLM3 cell invasion, migration, proliferation, and apoptosis were investigated using cell scratching, colony formation assay, flow cytometry, western blotting, and real-time qPCR, gas chromatography, and RNA sequencing to determine the pathways and molecular targets involved. Tumor xenografts were used to evaluate the anti-HCC effects of RJA in vivo. In-cell Western blotting and expression correlation analysis were applied to confirm the associations between H3 histone lactylation and the antitumor effects of RJA. KEY RESULTS RJA has good antitumor effects in vivo and in vitro. Multi-omics analysis with metabolome and transcriptome determined that the glycolytic metabolic pathway provided the principle antitumor effect of RJA. Further mechanistic studies showed that RJA inhibited HCC development by interfering with lactate production and inhibiting H3 histone lactylation at H3K9la and H3K14la sites. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS This study first demonstrated that RJA exerts antitumor effects by affecting the glycolytic pathway. RJA could regulate the lactylation of H3K9la and H3K14la sites on H3 histone using lactate as a clue in the glycolytic pathway. Therefore, the lactylation of H3 histone is vital in exerting the antitumor effect of RJA, providing new evidence for screening and exploring antitumor drug mechanisms in the later stage.

Abstract
Autophagy is a conserved intracellular catabolic pathway that removes cytoplasmic components to contribute to neuronal homeostasis. Accumulating evidence has increasingly shown that the induction of autophagy improves neuronal health and extends longevity in several animal models. Therefore, there is a great interest in the identification of effective autophagy enhancers with potential nutraceutical or pharmaceutical properties to ameliorate age-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, and/or promote longevity. Queen bee acid (QBA, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid) is the major fatty acid component of, and is found exclusively in, royal jelly, which has beneficial properties for human health. It is reported that QBA has antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities and promotes neurogenesis and neuronal health; however, the mechanism by which QBA exerts these effects has not been fully elucidated. The present study investigated the role of the autophagic process in the protective effect of QBA. We found that QBA is a novel autophagy inducer that triggers autophagy in various neuronal cell lines and mouse and fly models. The beclin-1 (BECN1) and mTOR pathways participate in the regulation of QBA-induced autophagy. Moreover, our results showed that QBA stimulates sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), which promotes autophagy by the deacetylation of critical ATG proteins. Finally, QBA-mediated autophagy promotes neuroprotection in Parkinson's disease in vitro and in a mouse model and extends the lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster. This study provides detailed evidences showing that autophagy induction plays a critical role in the beneficial health effects of QBA.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the world. Lifestyle and eating patterns may have a significant impact on the prevention of this type of cancer. Bioactive food ingredients influence the gut microbiome and can have a protective effect. Bee products (honey, propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom) or pharmacologically active fractions obtained from them are widely used in many fields of medicine, pharmacy, and cosmetics. Some evidence suggests that bee products may have anti-cancer potential. The main bioactive components with anti-colon cancer potential from propolis and bee honey are polyphenols such as pinocembrin, galangin, luteolin, CAPE, Artepilin C, chrysin, caffeic, and p-coumaric acids. This review is focused on the new data on epidemiology, risk factors for colon cancer, and current reports on the potential role of bee products in the chemoprevention of this type of cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of liver cancer that occurs in hepatocytes. Although many chemical drugs, e.g., cisplatin, methotrexate, taxis, and doxorubicin are used to treat HCC, there have been numerous reports related to the side effects of these drugs (e.g., emerging drug resistance, bone marrow failure, and gastrointestinal disorders). These issues led scientists to search for the novel anti-cancer drugs, mainly in natural products with greater efficiency and less toxicity. The current survey was intended to assess the anti-cancer effects of queen bee acid (10-Hydroxy-2-Decenoic Acid, 10-HDA) and its cellular mechanisms against the human hepatoma cell line HepG2. MATERIALS AND METHODS The MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay was used to evaluate the effect of 10-HDA on the viability of HepG2 cells. The initial and late apoptosis in the HepG2 cells treated with 10-HDA were assessed by the Annexin-V (AV) assay. The level of the gene and protein expression of some apoptosis genes (e.g., caspase-3, Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX), and B-cell lymphoma protein 2 (Bcl-2)), Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARP), and miRNA-34a (miR-34a), were measured by real-time PCR and Western blot. RESULTS The obtained findings revealed that HepG2 cell viability was markedly reduced (p < 0.01) following exposure to 10-HDA in a dose-dependent matter. The calculated half maximal cytotoxic concentration (CC50) value of 10-HDA was 59.6 µg/mL for HepG2 cells, while this value for normal THLE-3 cells was 106.4 µg/mL. We found that 10-HDA markedly elevated (p < 0.01) the percentage of necrotic and apoptotic cells from 0.94 to 9.7 and 27.6%, respectively. The real-time PCR results showed that the expression levels of the caspase-3, Bax, and miR-34a genes were significantly (p < 0.001) elevated. Contrary to these results, a significant (p < 0.01) reduction in the expression level of the Bcl2 gene was observed. The levels of protein expression of Caspase-3, PARP, and Bax were markedly elevated following exposure of HepG2 cells to 10-HDA at ¼ CC50, ½ CC50, and CC50. The level of protein expression of Bcl-2 was markedly reduced following exposure of HepG2 cells to 10-HDA at ¼ CC50, ½ CC50, and CC50 (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The current results confirmed the potent in vitro cytotoxic effects of 10-HDA on HepG2 cells with no significant cytotoxic effects on normal cells. Although its mechanisms of action have not been fully studied, the induction of apoptosis via different pathways was determined as one of the principle mechanisms of action of 10-HDA against HepG2 cells. Nevertheless, additional surveys must be performed to clearly understand the mechanisms of action and safety of this fatty acid.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) has been one of the most widely used natural products in alternative medicine for centuries. Being produced by both hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands, RJ exhibits an extraordinary complexity in terms of its composition, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, polyphenols, vitamins, and hormones. Due to its heterogeneous structure, RJ displays various functional roles for honeybees, including being involved in nutrition, learning, memory, and social behavior. Furthermore, a wide range of studies reported its therapeutic properties, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, to name a few. In this direction, there is a wide range of health-related problems for which the medical area specialists and researchers are continuously trying to find a cure, such as cancer, atherosclerosis, or infertility. For the mentioned diseases and more, it has been proven that RJ is a key player in finding a valuable treatment. In this review, the great impact of RJ as an alternative medicine agent is highlighted, with a focus on its anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. Moreover, we link it to its apitherapeutic potential by discussing its composition. Herein, we discuss a wide range of novel studies and present the latest research work.

Abstract
Royal jelly is a yellowish to white gel-like substance that is known as a "superfood" and consumed by queen bees. There are certain compounds in royal jelly considered to have health-promoting properties, including 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid and major royal jelly proteins. Royal jelly has beneficial effects on some disorders such as cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes. Antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties have been ascribed to this substance. This chapter describes the effects of royal jelly on COVID-19 disease.

Abstract
Honeybee products, as multicomponent substances, have been a focus of great interest. The present work aimed to perform the nutritional and chemical profiling and biochemical characterization of bee pollen (BP), bee bread (BB), and royal jelly (RJ) and study their applications in the fortification of functional fermented dairy products. Their effects on starter cultures and the physicochemical and sensorial quality of products were monitored. A molecular networking analysis identified a total of 46 compounds in the three bee products that could be potential medicines, including flavonoids, fatty acids, and peptides. BB showed the highest protein and sugar contents (22.57 and 26.78 g/100 g), which cover 45.14 and 53.56% of their daily values (DVs), with considerable amounts of the essential amino acids threonine and lysine (59.50 and 42.03%). BP, BB, and RJ can be considered sources of iron, as 100 g can cover 141, 198.5, and 94.94% of DV%, respectively. BP was revealed to have the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents (105.68 and 43.91 µg/g) and showed a synergetic effect when mixed with RJ, resulting in increased antioxidant activity, while BB showed a synergetic effect when mixed with RJ in terms of both antioxidant and proteolytic powers (IC50 7.54, 11.55, 12.15, 12.50, and 12.65 cP compared to the control (10.55 cP)), reflecting their organoleptic properties and highlighting these health-oriented products as promising natural products for human health care.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the major causes of death globally. Currently, various methods are used to treat cancer, including radiotherapy, surgery, and chemotherapy, all of which have serious adverse effects. A healthy lifestyle, especially a nutritional diet, plays a critical role in the treatment and prevention of many disorders, including cancer. The above notion, plus the trend in going back to nature, encourages consumers and the food industry to invest more in food products and to find potential candidates that can maintain human health. One of these agents, and a very notable food agent, is royal jelly (RJ), known to be produced by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular salivary glands of young nurse honeybees. RJ contains bioactive substances, such as carbohydrates, protein, lipids, peptides, mineral salts and polyphenols which contribute to the appreciated biological and pharmacological activities. Antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antibacterial impacts are among the well-recognized benefits. The combination of RJ or its constituents with anticancer drugs has synergistic effects on cancer disorders, enhancing the drug’s effectiveness or reducing its side effects. The purpose of the present review is to emphasize the possible interactions between chemotherapy and RJ, or its components, in treating cancer illnesses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Royal jelly (RJ) is a unique beehive product and has been recommended for human health since ancient times because of its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiproliferative, neuroprotective, anti-lipidemic and anti-aging features. However, the biggest obstacle in the use of RJ is the need for cold storage and the instability of bioactive components over time. In the present study, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) content, as well as antioxidant [using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) methods] and antimicrobial activity (five Gram-positive, five Gram-negative and three yeasts), were comparatively evaluated for three RJ forms, two of which can be stored at 24 ± 1 °C during storage. RESULTS Microencapsulated royal jelly (MRJ) stored at room temperature succeeded in preserving its 10-HDA content, a major bioactive compound, during the 6 months, with respect to lyophilized royal jelly (LRJ) and fresh RJ stored at 4 °C. The initial 10-HDA contents of RJ, LRJ and MRJ were determined as 1.90%, 5.26% and 2.75%, respectively. Moreover, the total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity mostly remained constant throughout the storage period (P ≥ 0.05). Gram-positive strains were generally more sensitive than Gram-negative strains. In the present study, the in vitro simulated digestion analysis showed that MRJ can tolerate the digestion process. CONCLUSION Overall, the encapsulation process was considered as one preservative technique for RJ. The microencapsulation of RJ as shown in the results of the present study are encouraging in terms of enabling the local beekeeping sector to achieve ease of production and increased product diversity. MRJ shows promise as a commercial product with a high export value for producers. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
SCOPE The objective of this study is to explore the effects of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), the major fatty acid in royal jelly, on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced mice ulcerative colitis (UC) and its potential mechanism of action. METHODS AND RESULTS Forty male C57BL/6 mice are randomly divided into five experimental groups: control, DSS, DSS + 25 (or 100)mg kg-1 d-1 10-HDA, and DSS + 200 mg kg-1 d-1 mesalazine (ME). UC is induced in mice using 2.5% DSS in drinking water for 7 days. During the induction, these UC mice are orally administrated 10-HDA or ME per day. Meanwhile, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/adenosine-triphosphate (ATP)-stimulated THP1 cells are used as a model to test the effects of 10-HDA. 10-HDA reduces DSS-induced pathological damage, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, neutrophil infiltration, and cytokine production in colonic tissue. Compared with the DSS group, the expressions of thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP), NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase-recruitment domain (ASC), cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase-1 (Caspase-1), gasdermin-D (GSDMD), N-terminal domain of gasdermin-D (N-GSDMD), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in the colon are decreased after administration of 10-HDA. 10-HDA also elevates the barrier integrity and the expressions of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and Occludin in colonic epithelium exposed to DSS. In THP1 cells, the inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis induced by LPS/ATP is inhibited by 10-HDA pretreatment. CONCLUSION 10-HDA alleviates DSS-induced colitis by regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptotic pathway and enhancing colonic barrier function.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is one of the most valued natural products and is known for its health-promoting properties. Due to its therapeutic effects, it has been used in medicine since antiquity. Nowadays, several studies indicate that RJ acts as a powerful antimicrobial agent. Indeed, researchers shed light on its antioxidant and anticancer activity. RJ's biological properties are related to its bioactive compounds, such as proteins, peptides, phenolic, and fatty acids. The aim of this review is to highlight recent findings on RJ's main bioactive compounds correlated with its health-promoting properties. The available literature suggests that these bioactive compounds can be used as an alternative approach in order to enhance human health. Moreover, throughout this paper, we underline the prominent antibacterial effect of RJ against several target bacterial strains. In addition, we briefly discuss other therapeutic activities, such as antioxidative and anticancer effects, of this outstanding natural product.

Abstract
Graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) have attracted substantial attention in numerous fields due to their unique physicochemical properties. However, their nanotoxicity and potential for use in biomedicine still require further study. In this work, the effects of GOQD and trans- 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) cotreatment on the immune function of macrophages (RAW264.7 cells) were investigated. In particular, LC/MS-based metabolomics was performed to evaluate the effects of GOQDs on the metabolism of LPS-stimulated macrophages. Herein, we fabricated GOQDs with good dispersibility and a uniform size distribution of approximately 7 nm using a polyimide-pyrolyzed carbon film as the working electrode, a high-voltage graphite electrode as the cathode, and H2O2 as the oxidant. The GOQDs entered the macrophages and emitted green fluorescence under UV irradiation. Cotreatment with GOQDs and 10-HDA induced RAW 264.7 cell proliferation. GOQDs promoted the anti-inflammatory effect of 10-HDA on LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and attenuated the secretion of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β. The metabolites in RAW264.7 cells treated with GOQDs were significantly different from those in RAW264.7 cells treated with LPS. The enrichment analysis showed that treatment with GOQDs interfered with amino acid metabolism, and lipid metabolism. Our results demonstrate the role of GOQDs in macrophages and provide a basis for their further application in biomedical fields.

Abstract
The limited therapeutic options associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) necessitate search for innovative strategies particularly, use of natural extracts such as lyophilized royal jelly (LRJ) and garlic extract (GE). Therefore, out study aimed to formulate emulgels containing different concentrations of both LRJ and GE and to evaluate their activities using a murine model infected with MRSA clinical isolate. Four plain emulgel formulas were prepared by mixing stearic acid/yellow soft paraffin-based O/W emulsion formulae based on Carbopol 940, Na alginate, Na carboxymethylcellulose or Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose E4. Sodium alginate-based emulgel was selected for preparation of four medicated emulgel formulations combining LRJ and GE at four different concentrations. The selected medicated emulgels were used for the in vivo studies. The emulgel formulated with Na alginate and HPMC (MF3) exhibited optimum smooth homogeneous consistency, neutral pH, acceptable viscosity, spreadability, extrudability values and best storage stability properties. In vivo results revealed that, the wounds infected with MRSA isolate in rates were wet (oozing) and showed pus formation when compared to injured uninfected wounds. MF3 formula containing 4% LRJ and 50% GE showed the maximum wound healing properties, both in the apparent physical wound healing measurements and in the histopathological examination. In conclusion, the medicated emulgel formulation (MF3) prepared with Na alginate was found optimum for topical application. MF3 formula containing 4% LRJ and 50% GE has shown the highest in vivo wound healing capacities. Further clinical studies should be conducted to prove both its safety and efficacy and the potential use in human. Four plain emulgel formulas were prepared and investigated for physiochemical and stability properties (F1–F4). The emulgel F3 exhibited optimum smooth homogeneous consistency, neutral pH, acceptable viscosity, spreadability, extrudability values and best storage stability properties. A murine skin model infected with clinical MRSA isolate was established and wounds were monitored via apparent physical wound healing measurements and histopathological examination. The MF3 containing 4% LRJ and 50% GE has shown the highest in vivo wound healing capacities.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an epidemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Populations at risk as well as those who can develop serious complications are people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and the elderly. Severe symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection are associated with immune failure and dysfunction. The approach of strengthening immunity may be the right choice in order to save lives. This review aimed to provide an overview of current information revealing the importance of bee products in strengthening the immune system against COVID-19. We highlighted the immunomodulatory and the antiviral effects of zinc and polyphenols, which may actively contribute to improving symptoms and preventing complications caused by COVID-19 and can counteract viral infections. Thus, this review will pave the way for conducting advanced experimental research to evaluate zinc and polyphenols-rich bee products to prevent and reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.

Abstract
Inflammation is a defense process triggered when the body faces assaults from pathogens, toxic substances, microbial infections, or when tissue is damaged. Immune and inflammatory disorders are common pathogenic pathways that lead to the progress of various chronic diseases, such as cancer and diabetes. The overproduction of cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α, is an essential parameter in the clinical diagnosis of auto-inflammatory diseases. In this review, the effects of bee products have on inflammatory and autoimmune diseases are discussed with respect to the current literature. The databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Sci-Finder and clinical trials were screened using different combinations of the following terms: “immunomodulatory”, “anti-inflammatory”, “bee products”, “honey”, “propolis”, “royal jelly”, “bee venom”, “bee pollen”, “bee bread”, “preclinical trials”, “clinical trials”, and “safety”. Honey bee products, including propolis, royal jelly, honey, bee venom, and bee pollen, or their bioactive chemical constituents like polyphenols, demonstrate interesting therapeutic potential in the regulation of inflammatory mediator production as per the increase of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, Il-2, and Il-7, and the decrease of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Additionally, improvement in the immune response via activation of B and T lymphocyte cells, both in in vitro, in vivo and in clinical studies was reported. Thus, the biological properties of bee products as anti-inflammatory, immune protective, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and antimicrobial agents have prompted further clinical investigation.

Abstract
Queen bee acid or 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) is one of the main and unique lipid components (fatty acids) in royal jelly. Previous studies have demonstrated that 10-HDA has various pharmacological and biological activities. The present study aims to evaluate the anti-tumor effects of 10-HDA alone and combined with cyclophosphamide (CP), as an alkylating agent which widely used for the treatment of neoplastic cancers, against the Ehrlich solid tumors (EST) in mice. Methods: A total of 72 female Swiss albino mice were divided into eight groups. EST mice were treated with 10-HDA (2.5 and 5 mg/kg) alone and combined with CP (25 mg/kg) orally once a day for 2 weeks. Tumor growth inhibition, body weight, the serum level of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen tumor (CAE), liver and kidney enzymes, tumor lipid peroxidation (LPO) and nitric oxide (NO), antioxidant enzymes (e.g. glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase enzyme (CAT)), tumor necrosis factor alpha level (TNF-α), and the apoptosis-regulatory genes expression were assessed in tested mice. Results: the findings exhibited that treatment of EST-suffering mice with 10-HDA at the doses of 2.5 and 5 mg/kg especially in combination with CP significantly (p < 0.001) decreased the tumor volume and inhibition rate, tumor markers (AFP and CEA), serum level of liver and kidney, LPO and NO, TNF-α level, as well as the expression level of Bcl-2 in comparison with the mice in the C2 group; while 10-HDA at the doses of 2.5 and 5 mg/kg especially in combination with CP significantly (p < 0.001) improved the level of antioxidant enzymes of GPx, CAT, and SOD and the expression level of caspase-3 and Bax genes. Conclusions: According to the results of the present investigations, 10-HDA at the doses of 2.5 and 5 mg/kg especially in combination with CP showed promising antitumor effects against EST in mice and can be recommended as a new or alternative anticancer agent against tumor; nevertheless, further investigations, particularly in clinical setting, are required to confirm these results.

Abstract
Bee products have been known for centuries for their versatile healing properties. In recent decades they have become the subject of documented scientific research. This review aims to present and compare the impact of bee products and their components as antimicrobial agents. Honey, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom are bee products that have antibacterial properties. Sensitivity of bacteria to these products varies considerably between products and varieties of the same product depending on their origin. According to the type of bee product, different degrees of activity were observed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, molds and dermatophytes, as well as biofilm-forming microorganisms. Pseudomonas aeruginosa turned out to be the most resistant to bee products. An analysis of average minimum inhibitory concentration values for bee products showed that bee venom has the strongest bacterial effectiveness, while royal jelly showed the weakest antibacterial activity. The most challenging problems associated with using bee products for medical purposes are dosage and safety. The complexity and variability in composition of these products raise the need for their standardization before safe and predictable clinical uses can be achieved.

Abstract
Honey is a honey-bee product obtained mainly by the enzymatic processing of nectar from a variety of plants, which leads to the wide range of colours and flavours available on the market. These organoleptic and nutritional features are influenced by the chemical composition, which in turn depends on the botanical origin. Bioactive compounds account for honey beneficial activity in medical applications, which explains the extensive use of honey in ethno-pharmacology since antiquity, from cough remedies to dermatological treatments. Wound healing is one of the main therapeutic uses of honey, and various design options in pharmaceutical technology such as smart delivery systems and advanced dressings are currently being developed to potentiate honey’s valuable properties for better performance and improved final outcome. In this review, we will focus on the latest research that discloses crucial factors in determining what properties are most beneficial when considering honey as a medicinal product. We will present the most recent updates on the possible mechanisms responsible for the exceptional effects of this ageless therapeutical remedy on skin repair. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art in application techniques (incorporation into scaffolds as an alternative to direct administration) used to enhance honey-mediated wound-healing properties are explored.

Abstract
Royal jellies (RJs) possess moisturizing, emulsifying, and stabilizing properties, and several pharmacological activities have also been found to be present, which make them an ideal component for cosmetic and skin care products. However, despite the abundant efficacies, there is a lack of studies that explore the chemical composition of RJ using metabolome analysis. Furthermore, an evaluation of the chemical composition of Indonesian RJs collected from different regions has yet to be carried out. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to identify any differences in the chemical composition of such RJs. Chemical profiling was also carried out to enable more targeted utilization based on the actual compositions. Chemical profiling is also important given the rich Indonesian biodiversity and the high dependence of the RJ compositions on the botanical source. In this research, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used as part of an untargeted metabolomics approach. From the chemical profiling, >30 compounds were identified across four RJ samples. The major constituents of the samples were found to be oligosaccharides, fatty acids, and adenosine monophosphate derivatives. Meanwhile, sucrose and planteose were found to be highest in the samples from Banjarnegara and Kediri, whereas dimethyloctanoic acid was found to be unique to the sample from Banjarnegara. It was also discovered that the RJs from Demak and Tuban contained more organic fatty acids and oligosaccharides than the other samples. Although the sample from Demak demonstrated good potential for use in the cosmetic, skin care, and bio-supplement industries, the higher abundance of fatty acids and oligosaccharides in the sample from Tuban indicated that it is perhaps the most suitable RJ for use in this field.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a complex, creamy secretion produced by the glands of worker bees. Due to its health-promoting properties, it is used by humans as a dietary supplement. However, RJ compounds are not fully characterized yet. Hence, in this research, we aimed to broaden the knowledge of the proteomic composition of fresh RJ. Water extracts of the samples were pre-treated using combinatorial hexapeptide ligand libraries (ProteoMinerTM kit), trypsin-digested, and analyzed by a nanoLC-MALDI-TOF/TOF MS system. To check the ProteoMinerTM performance in the MS-based protein identification, we also examined RJ extracts that were not prepared with the ProteoMinerTM kit. We identified a total of 86 proteins taxonomically classified to Apis spp. (bees). Among them, 74 proteins were detected in RJ extracts pre-treated with ProteoMinerTM kit, and only 50 proteins were found in extracts non-enriched with this technique. Ten of the identified features were hypothetical proteins whose existence has been predicted, but any experimental evidence proves their in vivo expression. Additionally, we detected four uncharacterized proteins of unknown functions. The results of this research indicate that the ProteoMinerTM strategy improves proteomic identification in complex biological samples. Broadening the knowledge of RJ composition may contribute to the development of standards and regulations, enhancing the quality of RJ, and consequently, the safety of its supplementation.

Abstract
Royal jelly is a natural substance secreted by worker honeybees that possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other biological activities. The purpose of this study was to formulate microemulsions with incorporated Lithuanian royal jelly for possible ophthalmic delivery and to evaluate the quality of the microemulsions in vitro. The oil in water type microemulsions were prepared by the oil titration method, incorporating royal jelly, surfactant, co-surfactant, oil, and water. Physicochemical characteristics of the microemulsions and the quantity of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid released in vitro were assessed. The in vitro assessment of prepared microemulsions formulations was performed with the Statens Seruminstitut rabbit cornea (SIRC) cell culture model. The results revealed that the droplet size of all microemulsion formulations was 67.88–124.2 nm and the polydispersity index was lower than 0.180. In the in vitro release study, the release of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid depended on the amount of royal jelly incorporated and on the ratio of surfactant and co-surfactant in formulations. The in vitro tests with the SIRC cell culture line have shown that all formulations were found non-irritating.

Abstract
10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), also known as royal jelly acid, has a variety of physiological functions, and recent studies have shown that it also has anticancer effects. However, its anticancer mechanisms have not been clearly defined. In this study, we investigated the underlying mechanisms of 10-HDA in A549 human lung cancer cells. We used Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, scratch wound healing assay, flow cytometry, and western blot analysis to investigate its apoptotic effects and underlying mechanism. Our results showed that 10-HDA inhibited the proliferation of three types of human lung cancer cells and had no significant toxic effects on normal cells. Accompanying reactive oxygen species (ROS), 10-HDA induced A549 cell apoptosis by regulating mitochondrial-associated apoptosis, and caused cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in a time-dependent manner. Meanwhile, 10-HDA also regulated mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways by increasing the expression levels of phosphorylated c-Jun N-terminal kinase, p-p38, and I-κB, and additionally, by decreasing the expression levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase, p-STAT3, and NF-κB. These effects were blocked by MAPK inhibitors and N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Furthermore, 10-HDA inhibited cell migration by regulating transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), SNAI1, GSK-3β, E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and vimentin. Taken together, the results of this study showed that 10-HDA induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in A549 human lung cancer cells through ROS-mediated MAPK, STAT3, NF-κB, and TGF-β1 signaling pathways. Therefore, 10-HDA may be a potential therapy for human lung cancer.

Abstract
Bee-collected pollen (BCP) is a well-known functional food. Honey bees process the collected pollen and store it in the hive, inside the comb cells. The processed pollen is called bee- bread or ambrosia and it is the main source of proteins, lipids, vitamins, macro-and micro-elements in honey bee nutrition. During storage, beebread undergoes solid state fermentation which preserves it and increases the bioavailability of nutrients. Research on beebread has been rather limited until now. In recent years, there is an increasing interest regarding the antimicrobial properties of BCP and beebread, due to emerging antimicrobial resistance by pathogens. Both BCP and beebread exhibit antimicrobial properties against diverse pathogens, like bacteria and fungi. As is the case with other bee products, lack of antimicrobial resistance might be attributed to the synergy of more than one antimicrobial compounds within BCP and beebread. Furthermore, BCP and bee bread exert targeted activity against pathogens and affect the host microbiome in a prebiotic manner. This review aims to present up to date research findings regarding these aspects as well as to discuss current challenges and future perspectives in the field.

Abstract
The vast increase of world's aging populations is associated with increased risk of age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD). PD is a widespread disorder characterized by progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, which encompasses a wide range of debilitating motor, emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms. PD threatens the quality of life of millions of patients and their families. Additionally, public welfare and healthcare systems are burdened with its high cost of care. Available treatments provide only a symptomatic relief and produce a trail of noxious side effects, which increase noncompliance. Hence, researchers have recently focused on the use of nutraceuticals as safe adjunctive treatments of PD to limit its progress and associated damages in affected groups. Propolis is a common product of the beehive, which possesses a large number of therapeutic properties. Royal jelly (RJ) is a bee product that is fed to bee queens during their entire life, and it contributes to their high physical fitness, fertility, and long lifespan. Evidence suggests that propolis and RJ can promote health by preventing the occurrence of age-related debilitating diseases. Therefore, they have been used to treat various serious disorders such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Some evolving studies used these bee products to treat PD in animal models. However, a clear understanding of the collective effect of propolis and RJ as well as their mechanism of action in PD is lacking. This review evaluates the available literature for the effects of propolis and RJ on PD. Whenever possible, it elaborates on the underlying mechanisms through which they function in this disorder and offers insights for fruitful use of bee products in future clinical trials.
