Abstract
BACKGROUND Dementia is a prevalent global health issue, necessitating comprehensive education for healthcare practitioners and students. Nursing and pharmacy students, provide support across healthcare settings often working as frontline caregivers. Therefore, it is imperative to equip these students with a profound understanding of dementia. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a serious dementia game co-designed with stakeholders, students, and people living with dementia improved the attitudes of nursing and pharmacy students. METHODS A pretest-posttest design was used to assess the attitudes of health professions students (nursing and pharmacy) towards dementia. The Approaches to Dementia Questionnaire (ADQ) was administered before and after playing a serious Dementia Game. The ADQ measured the total score, Hope subscale, and Recognition of Personhood subscale. Matched pairs t-test was used for analysis conducted with IBM SPSS statistics 27. RESULTS A diverse cohort of 505 participants from one university in Northern Ireland participated, with 461 matched pairs used for analysis. Both nursing and pharmacy students demonstrated a significant increase in overall dementia attitudes post-gameplay, with nursing students showing an increase from 79.69 to 83.59 and pharmacy students from 75.55 to 79.86. Subscales for Hope (Nursing = 28.77 to 31.22, Pharmacy = 26.65 to 29.20). and Recognition of Personhood also exhibited significant improvement (Nursing = 50.93 to 52.38, Pharmacy = 48.89 to 50.67). Demographic data revealed predominantly female participants, a lack of personal connections to dementia, and varied training experiences. DISCUSSION The study highlights the efficacy of the serious Dementia Game in enhancing attitudes to dementia amongst health professions students, indicating its potential as an educational tool. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting serious games and gamification in healthcare education.

Abstract
Background Although ageism has a strong relationship with attitudes toward dementia, no study has confirmed how person-centered care and compassion mediate the relationship between nursing students' ageism and attitudes toward dementia. Objectives This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of person-centered care competency and compassion competency on ageism and attitudes toward dementia among nursing undergraduates. Participants Participants were 295 undergraduate nursing students from four universities. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional electronic survey was conducted, involving the selection of four Korean nursing schools for the study. Data was obtained via an online survey conducted from March to July 2022. Data were analyzed with Pearson's correlations, and multi-mediating effects using the PROCESS Macro for software, utilizing bootstrap techniques. Results Attitudes toward dementia was correlated with ageism (r = -0.386, p < 0.001), person-centered care (r = 0.422, p < 0.001), and compassion competency (r = 0.457, p < 0.001). The total effect (β = -0.326, p < 0.001) and direct effect (β = -0.243, p < 0.001) of ageism on attitudes toward dementia were significant. Ageism does not have a direct effect on compassion competency (Std. estimate = -0.0213, CI: -0.0518∼0.0048). However, person-centered care and compassion competency had multiple serial mediating effects on the relationship between ageism and attitudes toward dementia (Std. estimate = -0.0357, CI: -0.0624∼-0.0145). Conclusions Person-centered care and compassion competency may mediate the association between ageism and attitudes toward dementia. Ageism was negatively associated with person-centered care and compassion competency, which in turn positively contributed to attitudes toward dementia. Therefore, an educational program that considers the interaction between generations and the context of older people must be applied to increase person-centered care and compassion competency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the global prevalence of dementia the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease recommended that healthcare professionals prepare to address the complex needs of people with dementia. To address this gap, nursing programs adopted experiential learning methods. While such methodologies are increasingly used, limited evidence exists to inform best teaching practices. PURPOSE This study evaluated the combined effect of an e-learning module with a virtual simulation on nursing students' knowledge and attitudes of dementia. METHODS The study followed quasi-experimental design with a cross-over and pretest/posttest design. A convenience sample of nursing students was recruited from three public universities in the Southeast United States. RESULTS Significant improvements in attitudes toward people with dementia were found in students with previous dementia care experience or those employed to provide services to people with dementia. Experience was a stronger predictor of attitudes than education. However, the reliability of the Dementia Knowledge Assessment Scale was not sufficient in this study. SIGNIFICANCE The findings may inform best practices in nursing education to prepare graduates to provide quality care for people with dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical students' empathy toward patients with Alzheimer's is rarely found in formal medical curricula. Based on Vygotsky's theory, watching films and reflection can be considered as effective methods to improve empathy. The present study aimed to explore medical students' perceptions of empathy toward patients with Alzheimer after participating in an educational program by using interactive video based on Vygotsky's theory. METHODS This qualitative study was conducted at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2022. The population included all 40 medical students. Firstly, the Still Alice movie which is about the feelings of a professor who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease was shown to the students. Secondly, the students reflected on their experiences of watching the movie. Thirdly, a session was held for group discussion on the subject of the movie, the patient's feelings, the doctor's attitude, the social environment surrounding the patient shown in the movie, and the necessity of empathy toward patients with Alzheimer's disease. The reflection papers were analyzed using the conventional qualitative content analysis method. RESULTS After analyzing 216 codes from 38 reflection papers, four categories, including communication with a patient with Alzheimer's, understanding the patient with Alzheimer's as a whole, medical science development, and the student's individual ideology, were extracted. CONCLUSION Reflection and group discussion after watching movie by providing opportunities for social interaction about personal interpretations will lead to active role in enhancing empathy. Based on the perceptions of the medical students, they gained a perspective to consider the patient as a whole and pay attention to establishing a proper relationship with the patient.

Abstract
COVID-19 was initially considered a primary respiratory disorder associated with various short- and long-term complications, affecting many patients and imposing a significant burden. Patients who have dementia are especially vulnerable to the SARS-CoV2 infection, which is associated with an increased risk for neuropsychiatric complications. These patients need a unique approach to managing ethical issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including autonomy, veracity, non-maleficence, justice, compassion, and dignity. The latter is one of the most elusive and misunderstood concepts in medical ethics and is extremely important in debates surrounding the proper management of patients with dementia. However, it is often left out of ethical analysis, as most clinicians, when debating issues associated with clinical practice, often evaluate only the "classical" principles of biomedical ethics. In this article, we aim to assess the unique features of dignity in treating this group of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will briefly analyze dignity as a bioethical concept. We will further explore its principal axes, namely compassion, creating a humane and purposeful environment, employing persuasion to meet the person's essential needs, exerting a certain degree of mild restraint to meet the person's critical needs, minimizing harm in terminal care, and justice, through the lens of people who had dementia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Applying this principle in clinical practice requires significant commitment from all healthcare workers. New approaches to the analysis of dignity, such as through the Ring Theory of Personhood, may facilitate its understanding by practitioners and aid its implementation in populations with multiple vulnerabilities, such as dementia patients, during an infectious outbreak that generates significant social and medical changes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although it is possible to live well with dementia and many individuals with dementia lead active lives with the help of family, friends, and communities, the general impression of dementia is frequently negative. Dementia is a global health issue. Despite this, little research has been done on the effects of innovative dementia education strategies among undergraduate nursing students. The aim of this study was therefore to assess if this serious digital game, originally intended for the public, could increase knowledge about dementia in first-year nursing students. METHODS The intervention was a digital serious game called "The Dementia Game", which was available to students throughout February 2021, to a convenience sample of first-year undergraduate nursing students (n = 560) completing a BSc Honours Nursing Degree programme in one university in Northern Ireland. The game was evaluated using a pretest-posttest design. The questionnaire comprised of a 30- item true- false Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS), which covers risk factors, assessment and diagnosis, symptoms, course, life impact, caregiving and treatment and management. Data were analysed using paired t-tests and descriptive statistics. RESULTS Overall dementia knowledge increased significantly after playing the game. Pre-test to post-test increases were observed across a range of seven categories of dementia knowledge (life impact, risk factors, symptoms, treatment, assessment, caregiving and trajectory), with particularly large increases in knowledge of trajectory and risk factors, as shown using paired t-tests. All pre-test to post-test comparisons were significant at the p < 0.001 level. CONCLUSIONS A short serious digital game on dementia improved first-year student's knowledge about dementia. Undergraduate students also expressed that this approach to dementia education was effective in improving their knowledge about the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses have key roles in caring for patients with dementia. To prepare them for demand-oriented nursing care, there is a need for education. An online course with a focus on healthcare needs assessment was designed. METHODS A quantitative study with a qualitative component using questionnaire-based interviews was implemented. The recruitment of students used the following inclusion criteria: (a) second-year students, and (b) absent from less than three lectures. Overall, n = 48 met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-eight students participated. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were evaluated using Kuckartz's content analysis with the software MAXQDA. RESULTS Nursing students judged the overall course structure as very good (M 1.36, SD 0.48). The learning aims were clearly defined (M 1.61, SD 0.68) and the learning content was adequately demonstrated (M 1.68, SD 0.67). The exercise on geriatric assessment promoted the internal learning process (M 1.67, SD 1.00). The online simulation training made the lectures' contents easier to understand (M 1.86, SD 0.89). Correlations were determined, among others, between the course structure and the clear definitions of the learning aims (rSp 0.566, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS The study describes the feasibility of the online course. To identify the impact on patients' health and caregivers' lives, further studies are needed.

Abstract
Dementia is caused by conditions that result in a progressive loss of brain function. People with dementia often have complex multimorbidity which increases their risk of admission to hospital. However, care in acute hospitals is often not adapted to patients with dementia, who have reported negative experiences of their hospital stay from admission to discharge. Person-centred care has been shown to make a positive difference to how well people with dementia cope in hospital. This article discusses how nurses working on general hospital wards can enhance the experiences of people with dementia and improve their outcomes by providing person-centred care.

Abstract
Background: Understanding the extent to which dementia care content is integrated into curricula is vital to prepare the nursing workforce to provide quality dementia care. Purpose: To revise and examine the content validity of the Dementia Care Content in Nursing Curricula Instrument (DCCNCI), an instrument for assessing dementia care content in prelicensure nursing curricula. Method: We generated additional items and refined the original DCCNCI. Ten recruited expert reviewers rated each item for relevancy and assessed their clarity, meaningfulness, and completeness. Results: 39 of 47 items on the DCCNCI-Revised indicated significant content validity (cut-off value: 0.62, as calculated by applying Lawshe's formula for calculating content validity ratio). Conclusion: The DCCNCI-Revised demonstrated acceptable content validity for assessing dementia care content and its integration into prelicensure nursing curricula.

Abstract
Background Improving understanding about dementia in nursing is a priority area for educators and policymakers. This is due to poor professional understanding about dementia and suboptimal healthcare practice. While many educational interventions exist, there has been a paucity of research which has considered the use of artist-produced photobooks to improve knowledge and understanding about dementia. The aim of this study is to understand the impact of an artist-produced photobook on nurses’ attitudes and beliefs about dementia. Results Following a thematic analysis of four focus group interviews with 22 nurses and nursing students from Northern Ireland, three themes emerged. Theme one was about how the artist-produced photobook helped participants to humanise the person living with dementia. Theme two related to how the artist-produced photobook supported participants to actively construct their own meanings about dementia based on their previous professional and personal experiences. Theme three explored how an artist-produced photobook could be successfully used to complement existing dementia education in the future. Conclusions Using an artist-produced photobook was an innovative way to learn about dementia for nurses and nursing students. The photobook functioned as a tool underpinned by arts-based pedagogy (ABP), supporting nurses to understand the person behind the dementia disease. As such, an artist-produced photobook has the potential to be a useful complementary resource for supporting professional education about dementia. Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we examined the validity and reliability of the Compassion Competence Scale (CCS) by adapting it to Turkish. DESING AND METHODS The data of the methodological research were obtained from 180 nursing students in the 3rd and 4th grades of the nursing department of a public university. FINDINGS CCS Cronbach alpha coefficient was determined as 0.795; 0.758 for the "Communication" subdimension and 0.639 for the "Sensitivity" subdimension and 0.658 for the "Insight" subdimension. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS As a result of this research, it was identified that the CCS is a valid and reliable evaluation tool in assessing compassion competence in nursing students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To provide qualitative insight into the experiences of compassion (to self, to others and from others) among family carers of older adults by exploring the written responses provided within a cross-sectional survey that asked about carers' levels of compassion, mindfulness, emotion regulation, coping strategies and psychological health. METHODS Family carers of adults aged ≥65 years from around the world completed the survey between July and December 2019. To provide carers with an opportunity to describe experiences in their own words and expand on issues beyond the limits of closed-response items, the survey included eight free-text boxes. These appeared after each self-report measure and at the end of the survey. From a total of 127 carers providing 504 written responses, inductive qualitative content analysis identified and evaluated 245 comments from 105 family carers' that were about their experiences of compassion (to self, to others and from others). RESULTS Some family carers perceived a lack of compassion, both for themselves and from others, and several barriers to carers' openness to receiving compassion were identified. Factors influencing carers' compassion to others in general included how carers were feeling themselves, the person it was directed towards and the situation. Within the caregiving relationship specifically, this included care recipients' level of need and behaviour. CONCLUSIONS Findings provide qualitative understanding about family carers' realities of compassion (to self, to others and from others) within their role and highlight the applicability and warranted focus of compassion-based approaches within family caregiving research and practice.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to: 1) explore attitudes among Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) students toward people with dementia, 2) investigate factors that might be associated with the expressed attitudes, and 3) suggest a means for promoting positive attitudes among CSD students. 94 CSD students completed a three-section online survey via Qualtrics. First, participants provided demographic information in three categories: person, courses, and experiences. Second, they completed a 25-item quiz on aging and dementia. Finally, each participant submitted responses to the Scale of Attitude toward People with Dementia. A stepwise regression analysis revealed two factors that best predicted positive attitudes of participants toward people with dementia. The first factor was having completed more courses on gerontology and/or dementia and the second factor was having found the courses beneficial for their future career as speech-language pathologists. The findings of this study imply that providing CSD students with more courses in gerontology and/or dementia may foster more positive attitudes toward people with dementia. These findings indicate that maximum benefit may be achieved by designing courses on gerontology and dementia that include professional practice-oriented activities and assessments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dementia remains a public health concern and a leading cause of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. However, the knowledge and attitudes towards dementia among university students remain unknown. This study assessed the knowledge and attitude towards dementia among university students in Uganda. METHODS An online descriptive, cross-sectional study was undertaken from August to November 2020, among undergraduate students from 11 Ugandan universities. A validated study questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, and attitudes of dementia. A score <60% was considered poor knowledge while ≥80% good knowledge and more than 80% reflected positive attitudes. RESULTS Overall, 1005 participants with a median age of 23 (interquartile range: 18 to 35) years participated in the study. The majority of the students were male (56.5%, n=568) and nearly half were pursuing human sciences/medicine-related programs. The mean knowledge score was 65.5% (SD±18.5). Thirty-two percent of the study participants had poor knowledge and only 26.8% (n=269) had good knowledge of dementia. More than half of the study participants believed that dementia is a normal part of aging and that memory loss happens to all people as they age. Attitudes towards patients with dementia were positive with a mean score of 81.9% (SD±19.6) and 65.2% of the study participants had positive dementia attitudes. Those aged more than 24 years were significantly associated with positive attitudes (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-2.0, p=0.019). There was a weak correlation between knowledge and attitude scores (ρ=0.341, p<0.001). CONCLUSION Whereas the majority of university students have positive attitudes towards patients with dementia, a significant number still have poor knowledge of the same. Continuous health education is suggested to improve knowledge of dementia in this population. Further studies to understand the perception in the general population are recommended.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed at exploring the compassion attitudes and needs for awareness and training related to a compassionate approach for Medicine, Nursing, and Psychology students, as well as for the academic and administration personnel from the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL, Ecuador) Health Sciences area. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study, based on a self-administered questionnaire through a sample of 788 UPTL students. STROBE guidelines were followed and applied. Results: A positive correlation was found between life engagement and compassion for others, from others, and self-compassion. The Nursing students were those who reported having previous experiences of contact with people with an advanced disease or in an end-of-life situation and having received some type of training compared to Medicine and Psychology students and lecturers (faculty members). Differences were found on the “self-compassion” and “compassion for others” subscales, noting a higher level of compassion among Psychology students. Conclusions: To implement the philosophy of compassionate universities it is necessary to design trainings that include the students, the faculty members, and the administrative staff, centered on sensitization and training about assistance, care, and accompaniment at the end of life, as well as cultivating compassion in the workplace.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dementia-friendly communities promote community coherence and reduce the risk of ageism in the community. This study examined the effects of a Virtual Reality (VR) educational program on participants' attitudes towards dementia and their sense of community related to supporting community-dwelling older adults. METHODS We delivered an educational program using a virtual reality platform that provided a first-person perspective of people with dementia in the courtyards of two convenience stores in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, Japan. We investigated attitudes towards dementia and participants' sense of community before and after the educational program. RESULTS There were 42 study participants (average age = 48 years). The total scores of attitudes towards dementia and sense of community changed positively from pre- to postintervention (P = .004 and <.001, respectively). CONCLUSION This educational program for understanding dementia could enhance people's support of community members living with dementia.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study is to assess the validity and reliability of the Compassion Competence Scale Arabic version for Saudi nursing students and interns. BACKGROUND Compassion is an essential element of quality health care in which training nursing students to deliver compassionate care is important. Assessment of compassion competence of Arabic-speaking nursing students requires a valid and reliable tool. DESIGN This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. METHODS This investigation was conducted from April to May 2019 in two universities in Saudi Arabia involving nursing students and interns. Cultural adaptation was performed using a forward-backward translation method. Content validity and construct validity through exploratory factor analysis were established. Internal consistency, stability and reliability were also determined for the scale. RESULTS The Arabic version has an excellent content validity. The exploratory factor analysis supported a three-factor solution that accounts for 50.62% of the scale's variance. The Cronbach's alpha of the scale was 0.806, whereas the Cronbach's alpha of the subscales ranged from 0.739 to 0.797. The intraclass correlation coefficient of the two-week test-retest scores was 0.84. The university, gender, year level and family type predicted the students' compassion competence. CONCLUSION The Arabic version can be used to measure Arabic-speaking nursing students' compassion competence in clinical areas.
