Abstract
BACKGROUND The shortage of inpatient psychiatric mental health care nurses in Saudi Arabia represents an important health care challenge. AIM The aim of this study was to illuminate perspectives of psychiatric mental health nurses employed in psychiatric inpatient settings about their employment experiences. METHOD This study adopted an exploratory qualitative approach using thematic content analysis. Ten professional nurses with psychiatric inpatient caring experience participated in two focus groups composed of Master of Nursing students. RESULTS Four main themes emerged: inadequate professional skills and knowledge for psychiatric mental health care practice, negative public attitudes toward psychiatric/mental health nurses, concerns for personal safety, and alternatives and advantages. The findings of this study suggest that nurses' lack of interest in working in psychiatric units is not merely personal but also social and organizational. CONCLUSIONS The study findings may encourage managers and authorities to develop measures to attract more mental health nurses to work in psychiatric units. Such strategies may include modification of nurses' skills, training, and professional knowledge, collegial supervision, mentoring, and working conditions and environment.

Abstract
AIM To explore and describe the daily experiences of non-psychiatric nurses working in selected acute psychiatric wards in South Africa. DESIGN A qualitative explorative and descriptive study design was used. METHODS Individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from fifteen non-psychiatric nurses with a minimum of one month of experience working in acute psychiatric wards in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Data were analysed using eight Tech techniques. The study is reported following consolidation criteria for reporting qualitative research. RESULTS Findings on non-psychiatric nurses' daily experience revealed three themes: (1) Unsafe working environment, (2) Managing difficulties due to lack of skills and (3) Strategies to support non-psychiatric nurses in acute psychiatric wards. Findings suggested institutional and managerial interventions in the form of orientation, in-service training and workshops and resource provision. Future studies should be done to develop a model for supporting non-psychiatric nurses in Limpopo Province, South Africa's acute psychiatric wards.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES At present, the doctor-patient relationship is tense. The prevalence of negative emotions, such as depression and anxiety, among healthcare workers is increasing every year. Negative attitudes of medical workers toward mental problems may aggravate the doctor-patient conflict and psychological problems of medical workers. This study aims to explore the complex network relationships between outpatient medical workers' attitudes toward mental problems, doctor-patient relationships, and their depression/anxiety levels. METHODS A total of 578 outpatient medical staff from the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University (167 males, 411 females) completed questionnaires on their attitudes toward mental problems, doctor-patient relationships, and depression/anxiety symptoms. Network analysis was conducted separately to construct the "attitude towards mental problems-doctor-patient relationship network" and "depression-anxiety related network". RESULTS The edge between "M15 (insulting words)" and "D8 (waste time)" showed the strongest strength in the "attitude towards mental problems-doctor-patient relationship network", and "M15 (insulting words)" had the highest bridge strength in the network. For the analysis of emotional variables, "P1 (anhedonia)" showed the most obvious association with "D10 (communication difficulties)" in the doctor-patient relationship and "M2 (poor quality of life)" in the psychiatric attitudes, and "P1 (anhedonia)" was the key bridge symptom in the network. CONCLUSIONS The "insulting words" may be an intervention target for medical workers' attitudes toward mental problems. The "anhedonia" in depression is the potential symptom that needs to be treated. Intervention targeting these variables may be beneficial to improve the mental health level of medical workers and the doctor-patient relationship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In many countries, not enough students are interested to work as general practitioners in rural areas. To solve this problem, several, sometimes partly extracurricular, programs have been developed. Most of these programs are based on continuity, which means that students stay in a rural region for an extended period of time, by completing clerkships. Although the effects of these programs are positive, it is often difficult to motivate students to participate. The purpose of the present study is to get insight into the reasons why students choose not to participate in these programs. METHODS We carried out a questionnaire study among medical students in the clinical phase of the Technical University of Munich in Germany. First, we asked the students whether they actively informed themselves about the program which aims to reduce the shortage of general practitioners in rural areas in Bavaria. Furthermore, the questionnaire focused on the reasons for not participating in this program. RESULTS Based on the answers of 442 students from study years 3-6, the most frequently chosen reason for not participating in the program is "identification with another discipline" with 61.0%, directly followed by "not willing to commit long-term" (56.1%). In third place is "personal connections to another region" with 30.5%. In the open comments, we find the same reasons: many students do not want to commit to a certain direction too early. In addition, students indicate that the number of regions where this program is offered is too limited for them. CONCLUSIONS Offering programs to prepare and motivate students for work as general practitioners in rural areas can contribute to increasing the pool of future general practitioners. To encourage students to participate in such a program, it is important to consider the motives of students. Many students who might be interested in general practice do not choose to take part in such a program because they do not want to commit to a particular specialty or region at an early stage. It is important to take these insights into account when designing and implementing these programs.

Abstract
Aim: This study aims to explore fourth-year nursing students’ knowledge of schizophrenia and their attitudes, empathy, and intentional behaviours towards people with schizophrenia. Design: This will be a descriptive qualitative study using focus-group interviews. Methods: Fourth-year nursing students on clinical placement in a hospital in Hunan province will be invited for focus-group interviews. Snowball and purposive sampling will be used to recruit nursing students for this study. Five focus-group interviews, each including six participants, will be conducted to explore participants’ knowledge, attitudes, intentional behaviours, and empathy towards schizophrenia. The interview will be conducted through the online Tencent video conference platform and the interview data will be collected through the same platform. All interviews will be recorded and transcribed verbatim and analysed with the approach of the content analysis supported by NVivo 12. Simultaneous data collection and analysis will be performed, and the interviews will be continued until data saturation is met. The findings of this study will be helpful in developing effective interventions to decrease the stigma toward schizophrenia among nursing students and those who study healthcare disciplines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatry is facing one of the highest levels of shortages among medical specialties. Stigma toward psychiatry plays an influential role in medical students' decision to choose psychiatry as a career and has been reported to be prevalent in different parts of the world, particularly in low/middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE To systematically review the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) medical students' attitudes toward psychiatry, to assess whether their attitudes are stigmatized or not, and the factors affecting their attitudes. METHOD PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsychInfo (PsycARTICLES) were searched using a combination of main terms "stigma," "psychiatry," "medical students," and the name of Eastern Mediterranean countries. Cross-sectional studies assessing the attitudes of EMR medical students toward psychiatry were included in this review. RESULTS Ten studies were eligible to be included in the result synthesis. These were from Pakistan (n = 3), Iran (n = 2), Saudi Arabia (n = 1), Lebanon (n = 1), Egypt (n = 1), Bahrain (n = 1), and Oman (n = 1). Most studies reported a combination of both positive and negative attitudes among medical students; however, the overall attitude was positive. Factors affecting medical students' attitude toward psychiatry included poor psychological well-being, having a friend with a psychiatric illness, involving in a romantic relationship with someone suffering from mental illness, young age, frequency of exposure to psychiatry clerkship/teaching, and quality of psychiatry clerkship. Nevertheless, the final positive or negative outcome of these factors on students' attitudes remained controversial. CONCLUSION Considering the lack of sufficient data from most EMR countries, we need to exercise caution in interpreting the results of this review. Nevertheless, our review indicates that psychiatry is not stigmatized among EMR medical students, and they have generally positive attitudes toward it. The findings of studies evaluating influencing factors are contradictory and demand further exploration.

The shortage of psychiatric nurses is a major healthcare challenge. Lack of interest (LOI) contributes to the shortage of psychiatric nurses. Nonetheless, there are limited studies in this area. The present study was conducted to explore nurses’ experiences of the causes of their LOI in working in psychiatric wards.
Methods
This qualitative study was conducted in 2016–2019 using the content analysis approach. Participants were 27 nurses purposively recruited with maximum variation from the psychiatric wards of three referral hospitals in Iran. Data were collected via unstructured interviews and were concurrently analyzed using the conventional content analysis approach recommended by Graneheim and Lundman.
Results
The causes of participants’ LOI in working in psychiatric wards were grouped into three main categories, namely inadequate professional skills for psychiatric care practice, negative public attitude towards psychiatric nurses, and concerns over patients.
Conclusion
This study suggests that the causes of nurses’ LOI in working in psychiatric wards are not only personal, but also social and organizational. Findings help managers and authorities develop strategies to increase psychiatric nurses’ interest in working in psychiatric wards through improving their work conditions and professional knowledge and skills.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of registered nurse (RN) preceptors working in psychiatric care concerning the organisation of clinical placements and their own preceptor role with undergraduate nursing students. BACKGROUND Clinical placements play a central role in undergraduate nursing education, and it is crucial that psychiatric care clinical placements are of high quality. METHODS The RNs' perceptions before and after the introduction of changes in the organisation of clinical placements were compared. A total of 103 surveys with quantitative and qualitative data were returned, from 59 RN preceptors at baseline and 44 RN preceptors at follow-up. Data were analysed with non-parametrical statistics and qualitative content analysis. RESULTS The majority of RN preceptors perceived the changes to have been beneficial, but there was still a desire for the students to have more time in their psychiatric care clinical placements according to the RN preceptors. At follow-up, significantly more RN preceptors perceived that they had an intentional pedagogical foundation for their precepting. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the changes introduced into the clinical placement are beneficial, but there is still need for further improvement in relation to the amount of time student nurses spend in psychiatric clinical placements and in the opportunities provided for RN preceptors to attend preceptor preparation courses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In view of the rising incidence and prevalence of mental disorders, and the stigma often attached to persons with these pathologies, the question of specific, appropriate training for nursing students is one of great importance. Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and clinical simulation may provide a useful means of introducing the student to this environment. OBJECTIVES To examine the perceptions and satisfaction of nursing students after their participation in a targeted mental health course in which the main specialist skills were acquired via clinical simulation. DESIGN A quantitative, descriptive, transversal study was conducted, in which the participants in a mental health course completed a questionnaire on their satisfaction with the experience. PARTICIPANTS The study population consisted of 141 nursing students enrolled in a mental health course and currently in the third year of their Nursing Degree studies at the University of Málaga (Spain). RESULTS The overall satisfaction expressed was more than 8 out of 10 (mean score = 8.43, SD = 1.25) and the students' satisfaction with specific aspects of the procedure exceeded 4 out of 5. The study results show that these nursing students considered the methodology in question to be useful preparation for clinical practice (mean score = 4.78, SD = 0.45), that they appreciated the participation of an expert (mean score = 4.72, SD = 0.60) and that receiving the opinions of their peers about their performance was an enriching part of the experience (mean score = 4.54, SD = 0.64). CONCLUSIONS The participants reported a high degree of satisfaction with the OSCE procedure and observed that this method should be implemented more frequently. Debriefing is viewed as a vital contribution to the learning process and to the participants' satisfaction. However, further research is needed to study the impact of stress and anxiety on the acquisition of skills via OSCEs.

It looked at the effect of sex, clinical exposure, and experience with mental illness on students' attitudes. METHODS A questionnaire containing the ATP 30 and MICA-2 scales was distributed to all medical students in Malta in a cross-sectional study. Factor analysis was followed by reliability testing using Cronbach Alpha. Factor scores were achieved using the regression method. The independent sample t test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to check for relationships between factor scores and variable of interest. Following this, the means and medians of factor scores for each group were calculated and compared. RESULTS Three hundred ninety-six students (51%) answered the questionnaire. Males had more positive attitudes toward psychiatry as a career choice (p = 0.01) and more positive attitudes toward the importance of psychiatry (p = 0.00). Those with clinical exposure to psychiatry had more negative attitudes toward the efficacy of psychiatry and psychiatrists (p = 0.00). Having experience with mental illness in some form was associated with decreased appeal in psychiatry as a career (p = 0.01 for personal experience, p = 0.01 for relatives, p = 0.00 for friends). CONCLUSIONS The factor structures obtained using ATP 30 and MICA-2 scales in this study are different from those found in the original literature. Having undergone psychiatry rotations had no significant impact on the attitudes toward psychiatry as a career choice but led to more negative attitudes toward the efficacy of psychiatry and psychiatrists.

Abstract
Purpose To identify perception, knowledge, and attitudes toward mental health disorders and their treatment among students in a university in West Java, Indonesia. Methods A cross-sectional study which measures perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes of 427 university students using convenience sampling through a 53-item self-administered questionnaire was conducted in January 2020. Either a chi-square test or the Kruskal–Wallis test was employed to analyze the association between student characteristics and variables. Furthermore, Spearman rank correlation coefficient was utilized to evaluate the relationship between variables. Results A total of 51.29% students had negative perceptions, 50.23% had good knowledge, and 52.46% had positive attitudes toward mental disorders and their treatment. The differences in the experience of visiting a psychologist or psychiatrist were associated with perceptions (P<0.01), knowledge (P<0.01), and attitudes (P<0.01). A positive correlation was observed between perception and attitude (r=0.56; P<0.01) and between knowledge and attitude (r=0.24; P<0.01). The students obtained most information about mental health from social media (92.74%). Conclusion Students demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitude toward mental health disorders. However, some continue to hold negative perceptions regarding approaching someone with a mental disorder, encouraging doubt and fear. Health promotion about mental health disorders and their treatment must be conducted to increase positive perceptions, good knowledge, and positive attitudes of the students. Social media tools can be considered to enhance mental health promotion and prevention of mental health problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While medical students are losing interest in lectures in favor of other educational materials, many studies suggest the benefit of active learning, combined with gamified educational tools. The authors developed a psychiatric adaptation of the « Hat Game ». It was hypothesised that this game would increase both knowledge and motivation in medical students toward psychiatric semiology. The aim of the study was to assess the benefit of a Psychiatric Hat Game session for learning psychiatric symptoms in third-year medical students. Student performance was also evaluated at 3 months. METHODS This gamified fast-track training consists of two teams and each team has to guess as many psychiatric semiology terms as possible using different techniques (i.e. speech, mime). The study involved a pre- and post-evaluation of knowledge (Multiple Choice Questions) and a satisfaction survey. Baseline, post-immediate, and three-months scores were compared by using Friedman analysis for paired samples. Comparisons of mean scores at two different times were performed by using Wilcoxon test for paired samples. RESULTS One hundred and sixty-six students were proposed to take part in the study. Among them 129 completed the whole program (response rate = 77.7%). Mean scores measured at the three points in time were significantly different (p < 0.001, N = 129). Knowledge mean scores were significantly higher after the game than before (+ 28.6%, p < 0.001). Improvement was maintained 3 months after the game (+ 18.9%, p < 0.001). Satisfaction survey items highlighted that students enjoyed and would recommend this type of gamified training. CONCLUSIONS The Psychiatric Hat Game improved knowledge of psychiatric semiology in medical students. Results suggest that it is a promising and efficient tool to playfully teach medical semiology, with transferable features, utility and acceptability from one medical field to another. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge advocating for serious games and gamified training in medical education.
