Quantum algorithm for quicker clinical prognostic analysis: an application and experimental study using CT scan images of COVID-19 patients

Notwithstanding the extensive research efforts directed towards devising a dependable approach for the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the inherent complexity and capriciousness of the virus continue to pose a formidable challenge to the precise identification of affected individuals. In light of this predicament, it is essential to devise a model for COVID-19 prediction utilizing chest computed tomography (CT) scans. To this end, we present a hybrid quantum-classical convolutional neural network (HQCNN) model, which is founded on stochastic quantum circuits that can discern COVID-19 patients from chest CT images. Two publicly available chest CT image datasets were employed to evaluate the performance of our model. The experimental outcomes evinced diagnostic accuracies of 99.39% and 97.91%, along with precisions of 99.19% and 98.52%, respectively. These findings are indicative of the fact that the proposed model surpasses recently published works in terms of performance, thus providing a superior ability to precisely predict COVID-19 positive instances.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. A Quantum-Enhanced Precision Medicine Application to Support Data-Driven Clinical Decisions for the Personalized Treatment of Advanced Knee Osteoarthritis: The Development and Preliminary Validation of precisionKNEE_QNN

Background Quantum computing and quantum machine learning (QML) are promising experimental technologies that can improve precision medicine applications by reducing the computational complexity of algorithms driven by big, unstructured, real-world data. The clinical problem of knee osteoarthritis is that, although some novel therapies are safe and effective, the response is variable, and defining the characteristics of an individual who will respond remains a challenge. In this study, we tested a quantum neural network (QNN) application to support precision data-driven clinical decisions to select personalized treatments for advanced knee osteoarthritis. Methodology After obtaining patients' consent and Research Ethics Committee approval, we collected the clinicodemographic data before and after the treatment from 170 patients eligible for knee arthroplasty (Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥3, Oxford Knee Score (OKS) ≤27, age ≥64 years, and idiopathic aetiology of arthritis) treated over a two-year period with a single injection of microfragmented fat. Gender classes were balanced (76 males and 94 females) to mitigate gender bias. A patient with an improvement ≥7 OKS was considered a responder. We trained our QNN classifier on a randomly selected training subset of 113 patients to classify responders from non-responders (73 responders and 40 non-responders) in pain and function at one year. Outliers were hidden from the training dataset but not from the validation set. Results We tested our QNN classifier on a randomly selected test subset of 57 patients (34 responders, 23 non-responders) including outliers. The no information rate was 0.59. Our application correctly classified 28 responders out of 34 and 6 non-responders out of 23 (sensitivity = 0.82, specificity = 0.26, F1 Statistic = 0.71). The positive and negative likelihood ratios were 1.11 and 0.68, respectively. The diagnostic odds ratio was 2. Conclusions Preliminary results on a small validation dataset showed that QML applied to data-driven clinical decisions for the personalized treatment of advanced knee osteoarthritis is a promising technology to reduce computational complexity and improve prognostic performance. Our results need further research validation with larger, real-world unstructured datasets, as well as clinical validation with an artificial intelligence clinical trial to test model efficacy, safety, clinical significance, and relevance at a public health level.

Artificial Intelligence, Computational Simulations, and Extended Reality in Cardiovascular Interventions

Artificial intelligence, computational simulations, and extended reality, among other 21st century computational technologies, are changing the health care system. To collectively highlight the most recent advances and benefits of artificial intelligence, computational simulations, and extended reality in cardiovascular therapies, we coined the abbreviation AISER. The review particularly focuses on the following applications of AISER: 1) preprocedural planning and clinical decision making; 2) virtual clinical trials, and cardiovascular device research, development, and regulatory approval; and 3) education and training of interventional health care professionals and medical technology innovators. We also discuss the obstacles and constraints associated with the application of AISER technologies, as well as the proposed solutions. Interventional health care professionals, computer scientists, biomedical engineers, experts in bioinformatics and visualization, the device industry, ethics committees, and regulatory agencies are expected to streamline the use of AISER technologies in cardiovascular interventions and medicine in general.

Programming Quantum Neural Networks on NISQ Systems: An Overview of Technologies and Methodologies

Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) systems and associated programming interfaces make it possible to explore and investigate the design and development of quantum computing techniques for Machine Learning (ML) applications. Among the most recent quantum ML approaches, Quantum Neural Networks (QNN) emerged as an important tool for data analysis. With the QNN advent, higher-level programming interfaces for QNN have been developed. In this paper, we survey the current state-of-the-art high-level programming approaches for QNN development. We discuss target architectures, critical QNN algorithmic components, such as the hybrid workflow of Quantum Annealers and Parametrized Quantum Circuits, QNN architectures, optimizers, gradient calculations, and applications. Finally, we overview the existing programming QNN frameworks, their software architecture, and associated quantum simulators.

Artificial Intelligence Applications in Health Care Practice: A Scoping Review (Preprint)

Background

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often heralded as a potential disruptor that will transform the practice of medicine. The amount of data collected and available in health care, coupled with advances in computational power, has contributed to advances in AI and an exponential growth of publications. However, the development of AI applications does not guarantee their adoption into routine practice. There is a risk that despite the resources invested, benefits for patients, staff, and society will not be realized if AI implementation is not better understood.

Objective

The aim of this study was to explore how the implementation of AI in health care practice has been described and researched in the literature by answering 3 questions: What are the characteristics of research on implementation of AI in practice? What types and applications of AI systems are described? What characteristics of the implementation process for AI systems are discernible?

Methods

A scoping review was conducted of MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases to identify empirical studies of AI implementation in health care since 2011, in addition to snowball sampling of selected reference lists. Using Rayyan software, we screened titles and abstracts and selected full-text articles. Data from the included articles were charted and summarized.

Results

Of the 9218 records retrieved, 45 (0.49%) articles were included. The articles cover diverse clinical settings and disciplines; most (32/45, 71%) were published recently, were from high-income countries (33/45, 73%), and were intended for care providers (25/45, 56%). AI systems are predominantly intended for clinical care, particularly clinical care pertaining to patient-provider encounters. More than half (24/45, 53%) possess no action autonomy but rather support human decision-making. The focus of most research was on establishing the effectiveness of interventions (16/45, 35%) or related to technical and computational aspects of AI systems (11/45, 24%). Focus on the specifics of implementation processes does not yet seem to be a priority in research, and the use of frameworks to guide implementation is rare.

Conclusions

Our current empirical knowledge derives from implementations of AI systems with low action autonomy and approaches common to implementations of other types of information systems. To develop a specific and empirically based implementation framework, further research is needed on the more disruptive types of AI systems being implemented in routine care and on aspects unique to AI implementation in health care, such as building trust, addressing transparency issues, developing explainable and interpretable solutions, and addressing ethical concerns around privacy and data protection.

HRNET: AI-on-Edge for Mask Detection and Social Distancing Calculation

The purpose of the paper is to provide innovative emerging technology framework for community to combat epidemic situations. The paper proposes a unique outbreak response system framework based on artificial intelligence and edge computing for citizen centric services to help track and trace people eluding safety policies like mask detection and social distancing measure in public or workplace setup. The framework further provides implementation guideline in industrial setup as well for governance and contact tracing tasks. The adoption will thus lead in smart city planning and development focusing on citizen health systems contributing to improved quality of life. The conceptual framework presented is validated through quantitative data analysis via secondary data collection from researcher's public websites, GitHub repositories and renowned journals and further benchmarking were conducted for experimental results in Microsoft Azure cloud environment. The study includes selective AI models for benchmark analysis and were assessed on performance and accuracy in edge computing environment for large-scale societal setup. Overall YOLO model outperforms in object detection task and is faster enough for mask detection and HRNetV2 outperform semantic segmentation problem applied to solve social distancing task in AI-Edge inferencing environmental setup. The paper proposes new Edge-AI algorithm for building technology-oriented solutions for detecting mask in human movement and social distance. The paper enriches the technological advancement in artificial intelligence and edge computing applied to problems in society and healthcare systems. The framework further equips government agency, system providers to design and construct technology-oriented models in community setup to increase the quality of life using emerging technologies into smart urban environments.

A Promising and Challenging Approach: Radiologists' Perspective on Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Fighting COVID-19

Chest X-rays (CXR) and computed tomography (CT) are the main medical imaging modalities used against the increased worldwide spread of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technology, based on medical imaging fully extracting and utilizing the hidden information in massive medical imaging data, have been used in COVID-19 research of disease diagnosis and classification, treatment decision-making, efficacy evaluation, and prognosis prediction. This review article describes the extensive research of medical image-based ML and AI methods in preventing and controlling COVID-19, and summarizes their characteristics, differences, and significance in terms of application direction, image collection, and algorithm improvement, from the perspective of radiologists. The limitations and challenges faced by these systems and technologies, such as generalization and robustness, are discussed to indicate future research directions.
