Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of differences in daily physical activity patterns on blood lipids has not been determined. This study examines the effects of the differences in free-living daily physical activity patterns (amount and intensity) on blood lipid levels in older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 51 older participants (71.8 ± 0.6 years, men = 8, women = 43). A triaxial accelerometer was used to assess physical activity patterns. The time from awakening to bedtime for each participant was used for group classification based on the amount (number of steps) and intensity (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, MVPA) of physical activity. The morning step group (M Step) was defined as those who took more steps in the morning, and the afternoon step group (A Step) was defined as those who took more steps in the afternoon. The same method was used for MVPA (morning MVPA: M MVPA; afternoon MVPA: A MVPA). Blood samples were collected at the start of the study to determine blood lipid levels. RESULTS Number of steps taken showed a trend toward lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in the M Step group compared with the A Step group. The LDL/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio was significantly lower in the M Step group than the A Step group (p < 0.05). The M MVPA group also had higher HDL-C levels and significantly lower LDL/HDL ratios than the A MVPA group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that compared with afternoon physical activity, daily morning physical activity (amount and intensity) is more effective in improving blood lipid levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. The proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) E670G polymorphism has been reported to be associated with variability in levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol, a risk factor for CAD. However, the relationship between PCSK9 E670G and CAD is still not fully elucidated. METHODS A total of 225 patients and 189 control subjects were recruited in this study. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples and was genotyped by mass array method. In addition, we also conducted a meta-analysis of case-control studies to elucidate the relationship of CAD and polymorphism. RESULTS The GG genotype of PCSK9 E670G was associated with a higher risk of CAD [odds ratio (OR) 2.994, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.174-7.631], even adjusting for risk factors (OR 2.794, 95% CI: 1.215-7.460). Logistic regression analysis showed that the dominant genetic model increased the CAD risk (OR 2.313, 95% CI: 1.070-6.983) after adjusting the confounding factors. Meta-analysis results of 13 studies revealed that PCSK9 E670G polymorphism was correlated with CAD risk under different genetic models. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that PCSK9 E670G genotype was associated with a high risk of CAD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The most basic and well-known cause of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is atherosclerosis. One of the main factors causing atherosclerosis is dyslipidemia. We will evaluate whether specific ratios of dyslipidemia, such as the atherogenic plasma index (AIP) and LDL/HDL ratio, which have recently been used in practice, can help us to predict the complexity of PAD in the clinic. METHODS A total of 305 patients with PAD admitted to our clinic were retrospectively included in this study. After evaluation according to angiography images using TASC-II classification, patients were divided into TASC A-B and TASC C-D. AIP was evaluated with the following formula: Log (TG/HDL). Cut-off values for AIP and LDL/HDL were determined on the ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve. Logistic regression analysis were conducted to predict peripheral arterial disease complexity. RESULTS The mean ages of Group 1 (n:180, 68.3% male) and Group 2 (n:125, 77.6% male) patients were 64.10 ± 12.39 and 64.94 ± 11.12 years, respectively. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM, p < 0.016) and coronary artery disease (CAD, p < 0.001) was higher in group 2. Group 2 had higher TG (p = 0.045), LDL-C (p = 0.004), AIP (p = 0.010), LDL/HDL (p < 0.001), and lower HDL-C (p = 0.015). In multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluating parameters in predicting PAD complexity, DM (OR: 1.66 Cl 95%: 1.01-2.73 p = 0.045), CAD (OR: 2.86 Cl 95%: 1.75-4.69 p < 0.001) and LDL/HDL (OR: 1.47 Cl 95%: 1.10-1.96 p = 0.008) were independent variables. CONCLUSION In our study, we compared LDL/HDL ratio and AIP in PAD for the first time in the literature and showed that LDL/HDL ratio is a more valuable ratio and an independent predictor of PAD complexity.

Abstract
Objective To assess the distribution of PCSK9 E670G genetic polymorphism and PCSK9 levels in patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), based on the presence of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Methods The study included 201 patients with chronic CAD, including those with HeFH (n=57, group I) and without it (n=144, group II). DLCN was used to diagnose HeFH. The PCSK9 E670G (rs505151) polymorphism was genetically typed using the PCR-RFLP procedure. In both the patient and control groups, the genotype frequency matched the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium distribution (P>0.05). Results There were twice more G alleles in group I (13, 11.4%) than in group II (17, 6.0%), and thrice more (1, 3.0%) than in the healthy control group; nevertheless, these differences weren't statistically significant. Simultaneously, PCSK9 levels were higher in HeFH patients (P<0.05) compared to non-HeFH patients not taking statins (n=63). T2DM was equally represented in groups I and II (31.6% vs. 33.3%). But carriers of AG+GG genotypes in group I had a higher chance of having a history of T2DM (RR 4.18; 95%CI 2.19-8.0; P<0.001), myocardial infarction (RR 1.79; 95%CI 1.18-2.73; P<0.05), and revascularization (RR 12.6; 95%CI 4.06-38.8; P<0.01), than AA carriers. T2DM was also more common among G allele carriers (RR 1.85; 95% CI 1.11-3.06; P<0.05) in patients with non-HeFH. Conclusion T2DM in patients with CAD, both with HeFH and non-HeFH, in the Uzbek population was significantly more often associated with the presence of the "gain-of-function" G allele of the PCSK9 E670G genetic polymorphism.

Abstract
Cancer is a disease with a significant global burden in terms of premature mortality, loss of productivity, healthcare expenditures, and impact on mental health. Recent decades have seen numerous advances in cancer research and treatment options. Recently, a new role of cholesterol-lowering PCSK9 inhibitor therapy has come to light in the context of cancer. PCSK9 is an enzyme that induces the degradation of low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDLRs), which are responsible for clearing cholesterol from the serum. Thus, PCSK9 inhibition is currently used to treat hypercholesterolemia, as it can upregulate LDLRs and enable cholesterol reduction through these receptors. The cholesterol-lowering effects of PCSK9 inhibitors have been suggested as a potential mechanism to combat cancer, as cancer cells have been found to increasingly rely on cholesterol for their growth needs. Additionally, PCSK9 inhibition has demonstrated the potential to induce cancer cell apoptosis through several pathways, increase the efficacy of a class of existing anticancer therapies, and boost the host immune response to cancer. A role in managing cancer- or cancer treatment-related development of dyslipidemia and life-threatening sepsis has also been suggested. This review examines the current evidence regarding the effects of PCSK9 inhibition in the context of different cancers and cancer-associated complications.

Abstract
This study demonstrated the therapeutic potentials of Cucumeropsis mannii seed oil (CMSO) capable of alleviating BPA-induced dyslipidemia and adipokine dysfunction. In this study, we evaluated the effects of CMSO on adipokine dysfunctions and dyslipidemia in bisphenol-A (BPA)-induced male Wistar rats. Six-week-old 36 albino rats of 100-200 g weight were assigned randomly to six groups, which received varied doses of BPA and/or CMSO. The administration of BPA and CMSO was done at the same time for 42 days by oral intubation. The adipokine levels and lipid profile were measured in adipose tissue and plasma using standard methods. BPA induced significant (p < .05) increases in triglycerides, cholesterol, leptin, LDL-C, and atherogenic and coronary risk indices in adipose tissue and plasma, as well as a decrease in adiponectin and HDL-C levels in Group II animals. BPA administration significantly (p < .05) elevated Leptin levels and reduced adiponectin levels. BPA plus CMSO reduced triglycerides, cholesterol, leptin, LDL-C, and atherogenic and coronary risk indices while increasing adiponectin levels and HDL-C in adipose tissue and plasma (p < .05). The results showed that BPA exposure increased adipose tissue as well as serum levels of the atherogenic index, triglycerides, cholesterol, coronary risk index, LDL-C, leptin, and body weight with decreased adiponectin levels and HDL-C. Treatment with CMSO reduced the toxicities caused by BPA in rats by modulating the body weight, adiponectin/leptin levels, and lipid profiles in serum and adipose tissue. This study has shown that CMSO ameliorates BPA-induced dyslipidemia and adipokine dysfunctions. We suggest for further clinical trial to establish the clinical applications.

Abstract
The increase in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and coronary artery calcification (CAC) are features of subclinical atherosclerosis that might be determined by the genetic background of patients. Among the multiple risk factors, the proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) has a great impact on atheroma development. Then, we focused on the potential association of the PCSK9 gene polymorphism (rs2149041) with the risk of an increased CIMT. We included 881 unrelated, asymptomatic individuals (732 normal CIMT and 149 increased CIMT) who lacked coronary calcification (CAC score = 0). Under the recessive inheritance model and adjusted by several cardiovascular risk factors, the rs2149041 polymorphism, determined by TaqMan genotyping assay, was associated with a high risk of increased CIMT (OR = 2.10, 95% IC = 1.26–3.47, P recessive = 0.004). Our results suggest that the rs2149041 polymorphism could be a risk marker for increased CIMT in asymptomatic individuals without coronary artery disease determined by the absence of a CAC score.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is one of independent risk factors for coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAHD). We determined whether the LDL/HDL ratio is better than LDL-C or HDL-C alone in predicting the severity of CAHD. METHODS We performed a retrospective study of 1351 patients with myocardial ischemia who underwent coronary angiography between January 2018 and December 2019 in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. Spearman correlation analysis, logistic regression model, Cox proportional hazards model and multicollinearity were used to evaluate LDL/HDL ratio for predicting CAHD severity compared to LDL-C or HDL-C alone. RESULTS Higher LDL/HDL ratio was seen in CAHD patients than controls (2.94 ± 1.06 vs 2.36 ± 0.78, P < 0.05). LDL/HDL ratio was significantly associated with the severity of coronary vascular stenosis. The area under the ROC curve of LDL-C, HDL-C, LDL/HDL ratio used to predict CAHD are 0.574 (95% CI 0.547-0.600, P < 0.001), 0.625 (95% CI 0.598-0.651, P < 0.001), 0.668 (95% CI 0.639-0.697, P = 0.000), respectively. The cut-off value of LDL/HDL ratio is 2.517, and the sensitivity and specificity are 65% and 61%, respectively. LDL/HDL ratio was related to the prevalence of CAHD and the odds ratio (OR) was 2.39 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.698-2.593, P = 0.00] in multicollinearity regression model. CONCLUSION LDL/HDL ratio may become a better predictor of CAHD severity, compared to LDL-C or HDL-C.

Abstract
PCSK9 plays a crucial role in lipid metabolism. This case–control study explored the associations of novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the PCSK9 gene with coronary artery disease (CAD) (≥ 1 coronary artery stenosis ≥ 50%) and its risk factors in the Han population in Xinjiang, China. Four tag SNPs (rs11583680, rs2483205, rs2495477 and rs562556) of the PCSK9 gene were genotyped in 950 CAD patients and 1082 healthy controls. The distributions of genotypes in rs2483205 and rs562556 were significantly different between the groups (all p < 0.05). The TT genotype of rs2483205, GG genotype of rs562556, and their H4 (T-G) haplotype were associated with CAD [odds ratio (OR) 0.65, confidence interval (CI) 0.45–0.95, p = 0.024; 0.63, 0.45–0.90, p = 0.011; 0.50, 0.35–0.70, p < 0.001, respectively]. Additionally, the model (TT + CT vs. CC) of rs2483205 was associated with increased risk of obesity, and the G allele of rs562556 was associated with lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), blood glucose, body mass index (BMI), and mean platelet volume (MPV) (all p < 0.05). rs2483205, rs562556, and their H4 haplotype of the PCSK9 gene were associated with CAD. Additionally, rs2483205 is associated with obesity, and rs562556 is associated with LDL-C, blood glucose, BMI, and MPV.

Abstract
Major adverse cardio-cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are still high, although there have been advances in pharmacology and interventional procedures. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/Kexin type 9 ( PCSK9 ) is a serine protease regulating lipid metabolism associated with inflammation in acute coronary syndrome. The MACCE is possibly related to polymorphisms in PCSK9 . A prospective cohort observational study was designed to confirm the association between polymorphism of E670G and R46L in the PCSK9 gene with MACCE in STEMI. The Cox proportional hazards model and Spearman correlation were utilized in the study. The Genotyping of PCSK9 and ELISA was assayed. Sixty-five of 423 STEMI patients experienced MACCE in 6 months. The E670G polymorphism in PCSK9 was associated with MACCE (hazard ratio = 45.40; 95% confidence interval: 5.30-390.30; p = 0.00). There was a significant difference of PCSK9 plasma levels in patients with previous statin consumption (310 [220-1,220] pg/mL) versus those free of any statins (280 [190-1,520] pg/mL) ( p = 0.001). E670G polymorphism of PCSK9 was associated with MACCE in STEMI within a 6-month follow-up. The plasma PCSK9 level was higher in statin users.

Abstract
Objective: Research has shown a possible relationship between the E670G polymorphism of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) gene and an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, there is no clear consensus on the subject because of conflicting results in the literature. The current meta-analysis was performed to better elucidate the potential relationship between the PCSK9 gene E670G polymorphism and CAD. Methods: There were 5,484 subjects from 13 individual studies who were included in the current meta-analysis. The fixed- or random-effects models were used to evaluate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: The current meta-analysis found a significant association between PCSK9 gene E670G polymorphism and CAD under allelic (OR = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.42–2.27, P = 1.00 × 10−6), dominant (OR = 2.16, 95% CI = 1.61–2.89, P = 2.22 × 10−7), heterozygous (OR = 2.02, 95% CI = 1.55–2.64, P = 2.47 × 10−7), and additive genetic models (OR = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.49–2.49, P = 6.70 × 10−7). Conclusions:PCSK9 gene E670G polymorphism was associated with an elevated risk of CAD, especially in the Chinese population. More specifically, carriers of the G allele carriers of the PCSK9 gene may be predisposed to developing CAD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The cardiovascular (CV) risk related to lipid disorders is well established and is based on a robust body of evidence from well-designed randomized clinical trials, as well as prospective observational studies. In the last two decades, significant advances have been made in understanding the genetic basis of dyslipidemias. The present review is intended as a comprehensive discussion of current knowledge about the genetics and pathophysiology of disorders that predispose to dyslipidemia. We also focus on issues related to statins and the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and some of its polymorphisms, as well as new cholesterol-lowering medications, including PCSK9 inhibitors. RECENT FINDING Cholesterol is essential for the proper functioning of several body systems. However, dyslipidemia-especially elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c) and triglyceride levels, as well as reduced lipoprotein lipase activity-is associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). High-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), however, seems to play a role as a risk marker rather than as a causal factor of the disease, as suggested by Mendelian randomization studies. Several polymorphisms in the lipoprotein lipase locus have been described and are associated with variations in the activity of this enzyme, producing high concentrations of triglycerides and increased risk of CAD. Dyslipidemia, especially increased LDL-c and triglyceride levels, continues to play a significant role in CV risk. The combination of genetic testing and counseling is important in the management of patients with dyslipidemia of genetic etiology. Strategies focused on primary prevention can offer an opportunity to reduce CV events.

Abstract
Background Genetic and environment factors affect the occurrence and development of coronary artery disease (CAD). Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), has been investigated extensively in the field of lipid metabolism and CAD. We performed this case-control study to investigate the relationship between serum PCSK9 levels and PCSK9 polymorphisms and lipid levels and CAD risk in a southern Chinese population. Methods A hospital-based case-control study with 1, 096 subjects, including 626 CAD patients and 470 controls, were conducted. Genotyping of PCSK9 polymorphisms was performed using polymerase chain reaction-ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR) method. Results The frequencies of the AA, AG and GG genotypes of PCSK9 E670G polymorphism were 90.58, 9.27, and 0.16% in the CAD patients, compared with 88.72, 10.85 and 0.43% in the controls, respectively. No R46L variant was detected in this population. There were no significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies of PCSK9E670G polymorphism between the CAD group and the controls. Serum lipid levels were not significantly different in carriers with the G allele and those with the AA genotype. The median (QR) of PCSK9 concentration was 1205.00 ng/l (577.28–1694.13 ng/l) in cases and 565.87 ng/l (357.17–967.50 ng/l) in controls, respectively. Compared with controls, CAD patients had significantly higher PCSK9 levels (z = 4.559, P < 0.001). After adjusting for age, gender, essential hypertension, diabetic mellitus, smoking and lipid profiles, PCSK9 levels remain significantly associated with increased CAD susceptibility (OR = 1.002, 95% CI = 1.001–1.002, P < 0.001). The correlation analyses showed that serum PCSK9 levels were positively associated with triglyceride (TG), Apo B and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) levels in controls. No significant association between the PCSK9 E670G polymorphism and serum PCSK9 levels was observed in the CAD group and the controls. Conclusions The present study shows that serum PCSK9 levels, but not PCSK9 polymorphisms, are associated with CAD risk in Southern Chinese Han population, and that serum PCSK9 levels are positively associated with AIP. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Stenosis of the intracranial large arteries, especially the middle cerebral artery (MCA), is common in the Chinese population. We conducted a case-control study to investigate clinical and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene polymorphism of MCA atherosclerosis in the Chinese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS Polymerase chain reaction-based protocols were used to identify the genotypes of polymorphisms in ApoE genes. Clinical parameters and the genotypes of polymorphisms in the ApoE genes were compared in patients with and without MCA stenosis. The ApoE exon ε4 genotypes with risk factors were compared in the patients with and without MCA stenosis. RESULTS In total, 337 ischemic stroke patients were recruited, 156 cases with and 181 without MCA stenosis. Univariate analysis showed that the levels of systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure were higher in the MCA-stenosis group. There were no significant differences in the genotype and allele frequencies of the ApoE polymorphism observed between patients with and without MCA stenosis. However, there was a trend that the MCA-stenosis group tended to have more of genotype ε4/ε4 (3.8% vs. 0.6%, P=0.052) than the non-MCA-stenosis group. There was no effect of ApoE genotype and genotype-by-environment interactions on ischemic stroke susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS This present study indicated that the hypertension (ie, systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure) and the ApoEε4/ε4 genotype may be associated with the occurrence of MCA stenosis in the ischemic stroke Chinese patients.

Abstract
Elevated plasma triglyceride (TG) levels are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin 9 (PCSK9) - a protein therapeutically targeted to lower plasma cholesterol levels - might regulate plasma TG-rich lipoprotein (TRL) levels. We provide a timely and critical review of the current evidence for a role of PCSK9 in TRL metabolism by assessing the impact of PCSK9 gene variants, by reviewing recent clinical data with PCSK9 inhibitors, and by describing the potential mechanisms by which PCSK9 might regulate TRL metabolism. We conclude that the impact of PCSK9 on TRL metabolism is relatively modest, especially compared to its impact on cholesterol metabolism.

Abstract
Aim: Investigate the correlation between paraoxonase 2 (PON2) Ser311Cys polymorphism as well as the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) His477His polymorphism and the susceptibility to development of coronary heart diseases (CHD) through a meta-analysis. Methods: Odds ratio and the corresponding 95% CI were used to assess the results. We included 7476 CHD patients and 8504 healthy controls. All the statistical analyses were performed by Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (CMA, version 2.0). Results: The Ser311Cys polymorphism decreased susceptibility in the overall population and Asian population to CHD. The His477His polymorphism has a protective role in the overall population; however, the subgroup analysis by ethnicity suggested that in Asian population, His477His might increase the risk of CHD. Conclusion: These polymorphisms constitute important predictive indicators of CHD susceptibility.

Abstract
Aim Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin Type 9 (PCSK9) is a hepatic secretory protein which promotes the degradation of low-density lipoprotein receptors leading to reduced hepatic uptake of plasma cholesterol. Non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms in its gene have been linked to hypo- or hyper- cholesterolemia, depending on whether they decrease or increase PCSK9 activity, respectively. Since the proliferation and the infectivity of Plasmodium spp. partially depend on cholesterol from the host, we hypothesize that these PCSK9 genetic polymorphisms could influence the course of malaria infection in individuals who carry them. Here we examined the frequency distribution of one dominant (C679X) and two recessive (A443T, I474V) hypocholesterolemic polymorphisms as well as that of one recessive hypercholesterolemic polymorphism (E670G) among healthy and malaria-infected Malian children. Methods Dried blood spots were collected in Bandiagara, Mali, from 752 age, residence and ethnicity-matched children: 253 healthy controls, 246 uncomplicated malaria patients and 253 severe malaria patients. Their genomic DNA was extracted and genotyped for the above PCSK9 polymorphisms using Taqman assays. Associations of genotype distributions and allele frequencies with malaria were evaluated. Results The minor allele frequency of the A443T, I474V, E670G, and C679X polymorphisms in the study population sample was 0.12, 0.20, 0.26, and 0.02, respectively. For each polymorphism, the genotype distribution among the three health conditions was statistically insignificant, but for the hypercholesterolemic E670G polymorphism, a trend towards association of the minor allele with malaria severity was observed (P = 0.035). The association proved to be stronger when allele frequencies between healthy controls and severe malaria cases were compared (Odd Ratio: 1.34; 95% Confidence Intervals: 1.04–1.83); P = 0.031). Conclusions Carriers of the minor allele of the E670G PCSK9 polymorphism might be more susceptible to severe malaria. Further investigation of the cholesterol regulating function of PCSK9 in the pathophysiology of malaria is needed.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is one of the most important factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a new comprehensive lipid index, might be a strong marker for predicting the risk of CAD.A hospital-based case-control study including 2936 CAD patients and 2451 controls was conducted in a Chinese population. Traditional lipid parameters were detected, and nontraditional lipid comprehensive indexes were calculated.Compared with controls, CAD patients had higher levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). By contrast, the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was lower in CAD patients. The values of nontraditional lipid profiles, including non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C/HDL-C (atherogenic index, AI), TC*TG*LDL/HDL-C (lipoprotein combine index, LCI), and lg (TG/HDL-C) (AIP), were all significantly higher in the cases than in the controls. The results of Pearson correlation analyses indicated that AIP was positively and significantly correlated with TC (r = 0.125, P < .001), TG (r = 0.810, P < .001), LDL-C (r = 0.035, P < .001), non-HDL-C (r = 0.322, P < .001), TC/HDL-C (r = 0.669, P < .001), LDL-C/HDL-C (r = 0.447, P < .001), AI (r = 0.669, P < .001), and LCI (r = 0.688, P < .001) and was negatively correlated with age (r = -0.122, P < .001) and HDL-C (r = -0.632, P < .001). In the univariate logistic regression analysis, AIP was the lipid parameter that was most strongly associated with CAD, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 1.782 (95% confidence interval: 1.490-2.131, P < .001), for an increase of 1-SD. Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that AIP was an independent risk factor for CAD.AIP might be a strong and independent predictor for CAD in the Chinese Han population.

Abstract
Background PCSK9 rs505151 and rs11591147 polymorphisms are identified as gain- and loss-of-function mutations, respectively. The effects of these polymorphisms on serum lipid levels and cardiovascular risk remain to be elucidated. Methods In this meta-analysis, we explored the association of PCSK9 rs505151 and rs11591147 polymorphisms with serum lipid levels and cardiovascular risk by calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) and odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results Pooled results analyzed under a dominant genetic model indicated that the PCSK9 rs505151 G allele was related to higher levels of triglycerides (SMD: 0.14, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.26, P = 0.021, I2 = 0) and low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL-C) (SMD: 0.17, 95% CI: 0.00 to 0.35, P = 0.046, I2 = 75.9%) and increased cardiovascular risk (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.89, P = 0.0006, I2 = 48%). The rs11591147 T allele was significantly associated with lower levels of total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C (TC, SMD: -0.45, 95% CI: -0.57 to −0.32, P = 0.000, I2 = 0; LDL-C, SMD: -0.44, 95% CI: -0.55 to −0.33, P = 0.000, I2 = 0) and decreased cardiovascular risk (OR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.60 to 0.98, P = 0.031, I2 = 59.9) in Caucasians. Conclusions This study indicates that the variant G allele of PCSK9 rs505151 confers increased triglyceride (TG) and LDL-C levels, as well as increased cardiovascular risk. Conversely, the variant T allele of rs11591147 protects carriers from cardiovascular disease susceptibility and lower TC and LDL-C levels in Caucasians. These findings provide useful information for researchers interested in the fields of PCSK9 genetics and cardiovascular risk prediction not only for designing future studies, but also for clinical and public health applications.

Abstract
Objective The aim of the present study was to assess the association between the 2037T/C and 2237G/A polymorphisms in the EL gene and the risk of CAD and lipid levels in a Chinese population. Methods A case-control study including 706 patients with CAD and 315 controls was performed. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to identify the genotypes. Results The EL 2037 T/C polymorphism was associated with CAD risk and HDL-C levels. No significant differences were found between the EL 2237 G/A genotypes and CAD risk and lipid levels in the whole population. However, carriers of the 2237 A allele had higher Apo A1 levels than those with the 2237 GG genotype and in the CAD subgroup (P = 0.044). The CAD cases have a significantly lower frequency of the C-G haplotypes than the controls, and the T-A haplotype was significantly more common in the CAD patients than in the controls. Conclusions Our study concluded that the EL 2037 T/C polymorphism was associated with CAD risk and HDL-C levels, and that the C allele might be a protective factor against CAD in the Chinese Han population. In addition, the EL 2237 A allele might be associated with an increased Apo A1 level in CAD subjects.
