Abstract
Background The occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing worldwide. The link between serum remnant cholesterol (RC) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and NAFLD remains unclear. Therefore, we sought to clarify the relationship between the RC/HDL-C ratio and the NAFLD. Methods Data for our cross-sectional study came from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) with 2,269 participants. Associations between RC/HDL-C levels and the prevalence of NAFLD and hepatic fibrosis were evaluated using adjusted multivariate logistic regression analyses. A generalized additive model examined the non-linear relationship between RC/HDL-C and the probability of developing NAFLD. Results Among 2,269 participants, 893 (39.36%) were diagnosed with NAFLD. In each of the three models, RC/HDL-C and NAFLD had a strong positive statistical relationship: model 1 (OR = 9.294, 95%CI: 6.785, 12.731), model 2 (OR = 7.450, 95%CI: 5.401, 10.278), and model 3 (OR = 2.734, 95%CI: 1.895, 3.944). In addition, the subgroup analysis by gender and BMI suggested that RC/HDL-C showed a positive correlation with NAFLD. The RC/HDL-C ratio was positively correlated with the degree of liver steatosis. There was an inverted U-shaped connection between the prevalence of NAFLD and RC/HDL-C, with an inflection point of 0.619 for all participants and 0.690 for men. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the predictive value of RC/HDL-C for NAFLD (area under the curve: 0.7139; 95%CI: 0.6923, 0.7354; P < 0.001), was better than traditional lipid parameters. Conclusion Increased RC/HDL-C levels are independently associated with an increased risk of NAFLD and the severity of liver steatosis in the American population. In addition, the RC/HDL-C ratio can be used as a simple and effective non-invasive biomarker to identify individuals with a high risk of NAFLD.

Abstract
Background and purpose Ischemic stroke (IS) is classified into clinical subtypes and likely influenced by various lipid components. Nevertheless, the roles of apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), apolipoprotein B (apoB), and apoB/apoA-I ratio in different IS subtypes remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the differential distribution of plasma apoA-I and apoB levels among IS subtypes and to evaluate the predictive value of the apoB/apoA-I ratio in assessing IS subtypes and disease severity. Methods In this study, 406 IS patients were categorized into three IS-subtypes based on clinical manifestations and imaging assessment, including intracranial atherosclerosis-related IS patients (ICAS, n = 193), extracranial atherosclerosis-related IS patients (ECAS, n = 111), and small artery occlusion-related IS patients (SAO, n = 102). Plasma apoA-I and apoB levels were measured upon hospital admission. Random forest (RF) models were performed to assess predictive values of these apolipoproteins apoB, apoA-I and their ratio in assessing IS subtype stratification and disease severity. Results Serum apoA-I levels were significantly lower in ICAS compared to ECAS and SAO patients (p < 0.0001), while apoB levels were higher in ICAS patients (p < 0.0001). The apoB/apoA-I ratio was significantly higher in ICAS compared to ECAS and SAO patients (p < 0.0001). Correlation analyses found a significant correlation between the apoB/apoA-I ratio and conventional lipid components. Additionally, RF models and plots of variable importance and distribution of minimal depth revealed that the apoB/apoA-I ratio played the most influential predictor in predicting IS subtypes and stenosis severity. Conclusion Our study shows the differential distribution of apoA-I and apoB IS subtypes and reveals the significance of the apoB/apoA-I ratio in assessing IS subtypes and arterial stenosis severity. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and enhance their clinical applicability.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nontraditional lipid parameters are associated with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) progression. This study aimed to investigate the association of nontraditional lipid parameters with the risk of restenosis in patients with ICAS after endovascular treatment (EVT). METHODS This study retrospectively enrolled consecutive patients with symptomatic ICAS after successful EVT followed by at least 3 months of angiography. Participants were divided into restenosis or non-restenosis groups based on the angiographic follow-up results. The nontraditional lipid parameters were calculated from conventional lipid parameters. The COX regression models and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to explore the association between nontraditional lipid parameters and restenosis. RESULTS This study recruited 222 cases with 224 lesions eligible for our study, of which 56 (25%) had restenosis. Compared with the non-restenosis group, patients in the restenosis group had higher levels of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) (0.211, interquartile range, IQR, 0.065-0.404 vs. 0.083, IQR, -0.052-0.265, P = 0.001), remnant cholesterol (RC) (0.55, IQR, 0.33-0.77 vs. 0.30, IQR, 0.18-0.49, P < 0.001) and Castelli's index‑I (CRI-I) (4.13, IQR, 3.39-5.34 vs. 3.74, IQR, 2.94-4.81, P = 0.030). In the multivariable COX regression analysis, a 0.1 unit increase of AIP was an independent risk factor for restenosis (hazard ratio, HR = 1.20, 95% confidence interval, CI 1.05-1.35, P = 0.005) whereas such an association was not observed for RC (HR = 1.01, 95% CI 0.90-1.15, P = 0.835). The restricted cubic spline (RCS) plot revealed a linear relationship between AIP and restenosis (P for nonlinear = 0.835) but a nonlinear relationship for RC (P for nonlinear = 0.012). Patients were stratified according to tertiles (T) of AIP and RC and the risk of restenosis increased in T3 compared to T1 (HR = 3.21, 95% CI 1.35-7.62, P = 0.008 and HR = 2.99, 95% CI 1.11-8.03, P = 0.030, respectively). Furthermore, this association remained stable within each LDL‑C level subgroup. CONCLUSION The AIP and RC were positively and independently associated with restenosis in patients with ICAS after EVT.

Abstract
Purpose Lipid-lowering therapy is integral in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), yet the connection between lipid parameters and parenchymal hemorrhage (PH) after endovascular treatment (EVT) for AIS is not well-defined. This research aims to assess the association between various lipid parameters and the PH risk following EVT. Patients and Methods We examined a database of patients who underwent EVT for AIS between September 2021 and May 2023 retrospectively. Traditional and non-traditional lipid parameters were documented. PH was identified on dual energy computed tomography images within 48 h. We employed logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic splines to examine the association between various lipid parameters and the risk of PH. The predictive capacity of the lipid parameters for PH was evaluated by comparing the area under the curve. Results The study included 384 patients, 65 of whom (17.7%) developed PH. After adjusting for potential confounders, only triglyceride was associated with PH among the traditional lipid parameters, while all non-traditional lipid parameters were related to PH. Based on ROC curve, the ratio of remnant cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (RC/HDL-C) exhibited the highest predictive capability for PH. Furthermore, our analysis revealed a significant nonlinear correlation between triglyceride, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, RC, RC/HDL-C and PH risk. Conclusion In assessing the risk of PH after EVT, non-traditional lipid parameters are often superior to traditional lipid parameters. It is recommended that routine evaluation of non-traditional lipid parameters could also be conducted in clinical practice as well.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated lipid levels are risk factors for early atherosclerosis. Lipid ratios have emerged as potentially stronger predictors of adverse cardiovascular changes and atherogenic cholesterol. Risk stratification in youth with obesity or type 2 diabetes may be improved by using lipid ratios. We sought to determine if lipid ratios would identify abnormalities in arterial structure and stiffness in adolescents and young adults. METHODS A total of 762 youth aged 10-24 years had laboratory, anthropometric, blood pressure, and carotid intima-media thickness and arterial stiffness data collected. Subjects were stratified into tertiles (low, mid, high) of lipid ratios and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Vascular outcomes by tertile were assessed by analyses of variance. General linear models were constructed for each lipid value and included demographics, risk factors, and vascular measures. Correlations between lipid markers, vascular measures, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size and number were conducted. RESULTS There was a progressive increase in arterial thickness and stiffness across all three lipid ratios and non-HDL-C. The triglyceride to HDL-C (TG/HDL-C) ratio remained an independent predictor of arterial thickness and stiffness after adjusting for other cardiovascular risk factors. TG/HDL-C had the highest correlations with arterial stiffness and small, dense LDL. CONCLUSIONS Arterial stiffness is increased in youth with high lipid ratios with TG/HDL-C being the most consistent marker of vascular changes. These data suggest that identification of high TG/HDL-C in these individuals may lead to earlier intervention to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) continues to pose a significant mortality risk with a lack of dependable biomarkers for early noninvasive cancer detection. Here, we find that aberrant lipid metabolism is significantly enriched in lung cancer cells. Further, we identified four signature lipids highly associated with LUAD and developed a lipid signature-based scoring model (LSRscore). Evaluation of LSRscore in a discovery cohort reveals a robust predictive capability for LUAD (AUC: 0.972), a result further validated in an independent cohort (AUC: 0.92). We highlight one lipid signature biomarker, PE(18:0/18:1), consistently exhibiting altered levels both in cancer tissue and in plasma of LUAD patients, demonstrating significant predictive power for early-stage LUAD. Transcriptome analysis reveals an association between increased PE(18:0/18:1) levels and dysregulated glycerophospholipid metabolism, which consistently displays strong prognostic value across two LUAD cohorts. The combined utility of LSRscore and PE(18:0/18:1) holds promise for early-stage diagnosis and prognosis of LUAD.

Abstract
Background The use of nontraditional lipid parameters for assessing clinical conditions is emerging; however, no study has identified thresholds for those parameters for the identification of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The present study aimed to establish the thresholds of nontraditional lipid parameters and test its ability to identify CVD risk factors. Methodology A cross-sectional study in women (n = 369, age: 46 ± 13 years, body mass index (BMI): 26.31 ± 2.54 kg/m2) was conducted. Blood samples were collected and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TGs) were estimated. Subsequently, nontraditional lipid parameters were calculated, namely non-HDL-C, Castelli's Risk Index II (CRI-II), CRI-I, lipoprotein combined index (LCI), atherogenic index (AI), and AI of plasma (AIP). Results Based on TC (≥200 mg/dL), the derived thresholds for non-HDL-C, CRI-II, CRI-I, LCI, AI, and AIP were 139 mg/dL, 2.29, 3.689, 58,066, 2.687, and 0.487, respectively. Similarly, based on the threshold of TG (≥150 mg/dL), the derived thresholds for non-HDL-C, CRI-II, CRI-I, LCI, AI, and AIP were 127 mg/dL, 2.3, 3.959, 58,251, 2.959, and 0.467, respectively. Out of considered five risk factors, non-HDL-C, CRI-II, CRI-I, LCI, and AI thresholds were capable in identifying four risk factors (physical activity, blood pressure, BMI, and age) and AIP was able to associate with two risk factors at most (blood pressure and BMI). Conclusion The derived thresholds of nontraditional lipid parameters were capable of differentiating between CVD risk and nonrisk groups suggesting the possible use of these thresholds for studying CVD risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between remnant cholesterol (RC) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). We also investigated the clinical value of RC/HDL-C ratio in evaluating the severity of CAD and in predicting the short-term prognosis of CAD patients. METHODS In total, 615 patients were enrolled and they were classified into a CAD group (418 cases) and a normal group (197 cases) according to the results of coronary angiography. Serum RC/HDL-C ratio and Gensini score were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were employed to evaluate the association between RC/HDL-C ratio and CAD. The effect of RC/HDL-C ratio on the progression of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) was also explored. RESULTS Increased RC/HDL-C ratio was associated with an increased risk of CAD (OR: 11.122; 95% CI: 5.903-20.954; P < 0.001). When stratified by CAD subtypes, increased RC/HDL-C ratio was correlated with a greater risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (OR:1.549; 95% CI: 1.014-2.364; P < 0.05). Compared with the first quartile, the 4th quartile of RC/HDL-C ratio had a 9.774-fold ( P = 0.000) increase in the odds ratio for CAD, and a 2.241-fold ( P = 0.017) increase in the odds ratio for ACS. RC/HDL-C ratio was an independent determinant of Gensini score ≥32 (OR: 2.138, 95% CI:1.389-3.292, P < 0.01), and multi-branch (MVD) (OR: 2.245; 95% CI: 1.468-3.443; P < 0.001). The prevalence of Gensini score ≥32 and MVD in the 4th quartile of RC/HDL-C ratio group were much higher than that of other quartile groups ( P < 0.01). Moreover, the areas under the ROC for the predictive value of RC/HDL-C ratio for CAD, ACS, Gensini score ≥32, and MVD were 0.702, 0.563, 0.602, and 0.669, respectively. Furthermore, the incidence of MACEs was significantly increased in CAD patients with levels of RC/HDL-C ratio ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSION RC/HDL-C ratio plays an important role in the progression and severity of CAD.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to assess the association between the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and stroke risk among middle-aged and older adults participating in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Methods This study conducted a prospective cohort analysis, enrolling a total of 10,183 participants who met the designated criteria from CHARLS between 2011 and 2012. We then used the Cox proportional-hazards regression model to explore the relationship between baseline non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and stroke risk. Using a Cox proportional hazards regression with cubic spline function, we were able to identify the non-linear relationship between the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and stroke occurrence. A series of sensitivity analyses were also carried out. Results The average age of the participants included in this study was 59.16 ± 9.35 years, and 4,735 individuals (46.68%) were male. Over a median follow-up period of 7.0 years, a total of 1,191 people (11.70%) experienced a stroke. Using a Cox proportional hazards regression model that was fully adjusted, we found no statistically significant correlation between the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and the risk of stroke (HR=1.022; 95% CI 0.964, 1.083). Nevertheless, we did observe a non-linear relationship and saturation effect between the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and stroke. Employing a two-piece Cox proportional hazards regression model and a recursive algorithm, we determined an inflection point of 2.685 for the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio. In instances where the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio fell below 2.685, for every 1-unit decrease in the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio, the likelihood of stroke decreased by 21.4% (HR=1.214, 95% CI: 1.039-1.418). In contrast, when the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio exceeded 2.685, there was no statistically significant change in the risk of stroke for each unit decrease in the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio (HR: 0.967, 95% CI: 0.897-1.042). The consistency of these findings across multiple sensitivity analyses suggests their robustness. Conclusion This study unveils a non-linear relationship between the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and stroke risk in middle-aged and older adults in China. Specifically, when the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio was below 2.685, a significant and clearly positive association with stroke risk was observed. Additionally, maintaining the non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio below 2.685 could potentially lead to a substantial reduction in the risk of stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Atherosclerosis, the main cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), is prevalent in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Atherogenic index (AI) is a strong predictor of atherosclerosis. However, its prognostic value in CVD outcomes and all-cause mortality among patients undergoing PD remains uncertain. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between AI and all-cause and CVD mortality in PD patients. METHODS Calculated based on lipid profiles obtained through standard laboratory procedures, AI was evaluated in 2682 patients who underwent PD therapy between January 2006 and December 2017 and were followed up until December 2018. The study population was divided into four groups according to the quartile distribution of AI (Q1: <2.20, Q2: 2.20 to <2.97, Q3: 2.97 to <4.04, and Q4: ≥4.04). Multivariable Cox models were employed to explore the associations between AI and CVD and all-cause mortality was evaluated. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 35.5 months (interquartile range, 20.9-57.2 months), 800 patients died, including 416 deaths from CVD. Restricted cubic splines showed non-linear relationship between AI and adverse clinical outcomes. The risks of all-cause and CVD mortality gradually increased across quartiles (log-rank, p < 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, the highest quartile (Q4) showed significantly elevated hazard ratio (HR) for both all-cause mortality (HR 1.54 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.21-1.96]) and CVD mortality risk (HR 1.78 [95% CI, 1.26-2.52]), compared to the lowest quartile (Q1). CONCLUSIONS AI was independently associated with all-cause and CVD mortality in patients undergoing PD, suggesting that AI might be a useful prognostic marker.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have explored the prognostic role of nontraditional lipid-related indicators in non-disabling ischemic cerebrovascular events (NICE). In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C/HDL-C) and the1-year risk of recurrent stroke in patients with NICE. METHODS Total cholesterol (TC), HDL-C, and patient information were collected at admission. Recurrent stroke events were followed up 3, 6, and 12 months after onset. Non-HDL-C levels were calculated by subtracting HDL-C from TC. The non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio was treated as a continuous variable and in quartiles (Q1-Q4). Stratified multivariate Cox regression was used to investigate the relationship between the non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio and the 1-year risk of recurrent stroke in patients with NICE. RESULTS Overall, 1,659 patients with NICE were enrolled. For each unit increase in the non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio, the 1-year risk of recurrent stroke in patients aged ≥ 65 years (older patients) with NICE increased by 64% in the adjusted model (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.64, 95%confidence interval [CI]:1.18-2.27, P = 0.003), and the HRs were 3.21 and 4.24 times higher in the Q3 and Q4 groups than that in the Q1 group, which was considered to be the reference (adjusted model Q3: HR: 3.21, 95%CI: 1.05-9.83, P = 0.041; adjusted model Q4: HR: 4.24, 95%CI: 1.30-13.85, P = 0.017). However, there was no significant difference in patients younger than 65 years. Both curve fitting and Kaplan-Meier cumulative risk analysis showed that an elevated non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio significantly increased the 1-year risk of recurrent stroke in older patients with NICE. The optimal range for the non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio should be no higher than the Q2 group (2.256-2.939). Stratified Cox regression analysis showed that these results tended to be stable for different comorbidities (all P for interaction > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Elevated non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratios significantly increased the 1-year risk of recurrent stroke in older patients with NICE. Therefore, clinicians need to pay more attention to this indicator when managing older patients with NICE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemic strokes are primarily caused by intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. Nontraditional lipid parameters broaden traditional lipid profiles, better reflect the metabolism and interaction between different lipid components, and optimize the predictive ability of lipid profiles for atherosclerotic diseases. This research was carried out to investigate the predictive value of nontraditional lipid parameters for intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. METHODS The investigation collected data from inpatients who underwent cervical vascular ultrasonography, carotid CTA, cerebral artery CTA or MRA, and brain MRI or CT from December 2014 to December 2021. The nontraditional lipid parameters were calculated by collecting traditional lipid parameters. To evaluate the predictive power of nontraditional lipid parameters, logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were performed. RESULTS Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 545 patients were included. According to the imaging results, inpatients were divided into two groups, including no intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (n = 250) and intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (AS, n = 295). Among them, AS was further divided into three subgroups: intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS), extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ECAS) and combined intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (IECAS). Logistic regression analysis showed that nontraditional lipid parameters, including the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), TG/HDL-C, remnant cholesterol (RC), nonhigh-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), lipoprotein combine index (LCI), atherogenic coefficient (AC), Castelli's index-I (CRI-I) and Castelli's index-II (CRI-II), were significantly correlated with intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (P < 0.05). Compared with other nontraditional lipid parameters, regardless of adjusting for potential confounding factors, AIP had a greater OR value in ICAS (OR = 4.226, 95% CI: 1.681-10.625), ECAS (OR = 2.993, 95% CI: 1.119-8.003) and IECAS (OR = 4.502, 95% CI: 1.613-12.561). ROC curve analysis revealed that nontraditional lipid parameters had good predictive power for intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. CONCLUSIONS This Chinese hospital-based study demonstrates that nontraditional lipid parameters (AIP, LCI, RC, CRI-II, AC, CRI-I and non-HDL-C) are effective predictors of intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, of which AIP may be a significant risk factor for predicting atherosclerotic arterial stenosis in the intracranial or extracranial regions.

Blood samples were taken for lipid profile analysis and cIMT was evaluated by carotid ultrasound. Logistic analysis was used to establish different models of different lipid parameters in predicting CAD. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to examine the predictive value. The optimal lipid parameter was also used to explore the relationship with multi-vessel CAD. Results Patients were classified into two groups based on whether CAD existed. Compared with non-CAD patients, the CAD group had higher lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)], apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C. According to the AUCs, Lp (a) combined with cIMT (AUC: 0.713, P < 0.001) had the best performance in predicting CAD compared to other lipid parameters. High level of Lp (a) was also associated with multi-vessel CAD (odds ratio: 1.41, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.95, P = 0.036). Conclusion For patients with highly suspected CAD, Lp (a) better improved the predictive value of CAD rather than most of blood lipid indices, especially in the absence of high levels of LDL-C. Lp (a) also can be used to predict the multi-vessel CAD.

Abstract
Background Abdominal obesity and adipocytokines are closely related to atherosclerosis, and adiponectin level is considered one of the important clinical indicators. This study aimed to analyze the associations of abdominal visceral fat content and adiponectin level with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS). Methods A total of 186 patients were enrolled in this study. Patients were distributed into ICAS and non-ICAS by the degree of artery stenosis. Plasma adiponectin levels and the ratio of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) to subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) were measured. The related factors of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis were determined using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results The VAT/SAT ratio (OR, 26.08; 95% CI, 5.92–114.83; p < 0.001) and adiponectin (OR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.44–0.84; p = 0.002) were found to be the independent predictors of ICAS in a multivariable logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of ICAS increased (T1: 27.4%; T2: 50.0%; T3: 75.8%) as the VAT/SAT ratio tertile increased (p < 0.001). The prevalence of ICAS decreased (T1: 72.6%; T2: 54.8%; T3: 25.8%) as the adiponectin tertile increased (p < 0.001). In ROC curves analysis, VAT/SAT ratio had a sensible accuracy for the prediction of ICAS. The optimal cut-off value of VAT/SAT ratio to predict ICAS in this study was 1.04 (AUC: 0.747; p < 0.001; sensitivity: 67.4%; specificity: 74.7%). The optimal adiponectin cutoff was 3.03 ug/ml (AUC: 0.716; p < 0.001; sensitivity:75.8%; specificity: 61.5%). Conclusion Higher VAT/SAT ratio and lower plasma adiponectin levels were closely related to the increased risk of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conventional and unconventional lipid parameters are associated with diabetes risk, the comparative studies on lipid parameters for predicting future diabetes risk, however, are still extremely limited, and the value of conventional and unconventional lipid parameters in predicting future diabetes has not been evaluated. This study was designed to determine the predictive value of conventional and unconventional lipid parameters for the future development of diabetes. METHODS The study was a longitudinal follow-up study of 15,464 participants with baseline normoglycemia. At baseline, conventional lipid parameters such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured/calculated, and unconventional lipid parameters such as non-HDL-C, remnant cholesterol (RC), LDL/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, non-HDL/HDL-C ratio, TC/HDL-C ratio and RC/HDL-C ratio were calculated. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by Cox proportional hazard regression adjusting for demographic and diabetes-related risk factors. The predictive value and threshold fluctuation intervals of baseline conventional and unconventional lipid parameters for future diabetes were evaluated by the time-dependent receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve. RESULTS The incidence rate of diabetes was 3.93 per 1000 person-years during an average follow-up period of 6.13 years. In the baseline non-diabetic population, only TG and HDL-C among the conventional lipid parameters were associated with future diabetes risk, while all the unconventional lipid parameters except non-HDL-C were significantly associated with future diabetes risk. In contrast, unconventional lipid parameters reflected diabetes risk better than conventional lipid parameters, and RC/HDL-C ratio was the best lipid parameter to reflect the risk of diabetes (HR: 6.75, 95% CI 2.40-18.98). Sensitivity analysis further verified the robustness of this result. Also, time-dependent ROC curve analysis showed that RC, non-HDL/HDL-C ratio, and TC/HDL-C ratio were the best lipid parameters for predicting the risk of medium-and long-term diabetes. CONCLUSIONS Unconventional lipid parameters generally outperform conventional lipid parameters in assessing and predicting future diabetes risk. It is suggested that unconventional lipid parameters should also be routinely evaluated in clinical practice.

Abstract
Purpose Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the world, and its prevalence is expected to rise further. To help understand the utility of the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (NHHR) in diabetes prevention, this large-scale longitudinal cohort study aims to explore the association of NHHR with diabetes risk and compare it as a risk predictor with conventional lipid parameters. Patients and Methods This observational study extracted data from the NAGALA longitudinal cohort study conducted in Japan between 2004 and 2015. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between NHHR and the risk of diabetes. The dose-response relationship was analyzed by restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression and the potential risk threshold was estimated. The receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) was used to analyze and calculate the predictive value and optimal threshold of NHHR and other conventional lipids for new-onset diabetes. Results Of the 15,464 people aged 18-79, 373 (2.41%) were diagnosed with new-onset diabetes during the study period, with a median age of 46 years. The sensitivity analysis based on multivariate adjustment showed that the independent positive correlation between diabetes and NHHR was stable in different populations. RCS and ROC analysis indicated that the association between NHHR and diabetes was non-linear, and the NHHR was a better marker for predicting diabetes risk than other conventional lipid parameters; Additionally, it is worth noting that an NHHR of approximately 2.74 may be the optimal threshold for intervention in diabetes risk. Conclusion In the general population, NHHR is a better marker for predicting diabetes risk than conventional lipid parameters, and an NHHR of about 2.74 may be the optimal threshold for assessing diabetes risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Remnant cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (RC/HDL-C) ratio has been shown to be a good predictor of metabolic disease risk, but no studies have further investigated the role of RC/HDL-C ratio in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. METHODS The participants were 14,251 adults who underwent a physical examination, all of whom underwent abdominal ultrasonography to determine whether they had NAFLD. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the RC/HDL-C ratio and the risk of NAFLD. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that after fully adjusting the confounding factors, the higher RC/HDL-C ratio was independently positively correlated with the risk of NAFLD. Interaction tests suggested that the effect of RC/HDL-C ratio on NAFLD was significantly affected by sex. Additionally, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under the curve of RC/HDL-C ratio for identifying NAFLD was 0.82, which was significantly higher than that of other conventional lipid parameters. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates for the first time that the higher RC/HDL-C ratio in the general population may be closely related to the increased risk of NAFLD.

Abstract
The experiment was conducted to compare the differences of gut microbiota and metabolic status of sows with different litter sizes on days 30 and 110 of gestation, and uncover the relationship between the composition of maternal gut microbiota during gestation and sow reproductive performance. Twenty-six Large White × Landrace crossbred multiparous sows (2nd parity) with similar back fat thickness and body weight were assigned to two groups [high-reproductive performance group (HP group) and low-reproductive performance group (LP group)] according to their litter sizes and fed a common gestation diet. Results showed that compared with LP sows, HP sows had significantly lower plasma levels of triglyceride (TG) on gestation d 30 (P < 0.05), but had significantly higher plasma levels of TG, non-esterified fatty acid, tumor necrosis factor-α, and immunoglobulin M on gestation d 110 (P < 0.05). Consistently, HP sows revealed increased alpha diversity and butyrate-producing genera, as well as fecal butyrate concentration, on gestation d 30; HP sows showed significantly different microbiota community structure with LP sows (P < 0.05) and had markedly higher abundance of Firmicutes (genera Christensenellaceae_R-7_group and Terrisporobacter) which were positively related with litter size on gestation d 110 than LP sows (P < 0.05). In addition, plasma biochemical parameters, plasma cytokines, and fecal microbiota shifted dramatically from gestation d 30 to d 110. Therefore, our findings demonstrated that microbial abundances and community structures differed significantly between sows with different litter sizes and gestation stages, which was associated with changes in plasma biochemical parameters, inflammatory factors, and immunoglobulin. Moreover, these findings revealed that there was a significant correlation between litter size and gut microbiota of sows, and provided a microbial perspective to improve sow reproductive performance in pig production.

Abstract
Background Multifocal atherosclerosis has dramatically increased annual risk of adverse cardiovascular events than single artery affected. Triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) has been implicated in the early development of atherosclerosis.However, evidence on the effect of remnant cholesterol, a major atherogenic component of TRL, on multifocal atherosclerosis in Chinese health asymptomatic subjects is insufficient. This study aimed to investigate the association of remnant cholesterol with intra- and extra-cranial atherosclerosis in Chinese population. Methods This study enrolled 3665 participants (median age 52.31 years) from the Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities Community study. Parameters of intra- and extra-cranial atherosclerosis includes intracranial artery stenosis (ICAS), carotid plaque, carotid artery stenosis (CAS), and carotid hypertrophy (intima-media thickness >0.9 mm). Logistic regression was used to assess these associations. Results The prevalence of vascular atherosclerosis significantly increased with increasing remnant cholesterol quartiles (P for trend <0.0001). In the multivariable-adjusted model, the odds ratio with 95% confidence interval comparing participants in Q4 versus Q1 of remnant cholesterol was 1.73 (1.29-2.31) for ICAS, 1.54 (1.22-1.94) for carotid plaque, 1.47 (1.17-1.84) for CAS, and 1.93 (1.48-2.52) for carotid hypertrophy, respectively. Furthermore, multivariable-adjusted spline regression showed S-shaped associations between remnant cholesterol and these outcomes. Conclusion Individuals with a high level of remnant cholesterol had a higher risk of intra- and extra-cranial atherosclerosis in Chinese population. Interventions aimed at reducing remnant cholesterol to prevent atherosclerotic diseases warrant further investigations.
