Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular and their associated disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, in developed and developing countries, and its prevalence has increased over the past few decades, due to changes in the lifestyle of people. Biomarkers are important tools for diagnosing, analyzing, and providing evidence of pathological conditions of CVD and their associated diseases. METHODS This study reviews historical cardiovascular biomarkers used to diagnose various diseases, their uses, and limitations, as well as the importance of new and emerging biomarkers. CONCLUSION sST2, GDF-15, CD-40, IL-6, and Micro-RNA. Initial studies of the future of cardiac biomarkers are promising, but more research is needed to demonstrate that they are more effective biomarkers of risk factors for CVD development. They also lack the analytical foundation needed for adoption in the medical industry. It is also necessary to determine whether these biomarkers can be used for diagnosis.

Abstract
Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at increased risk to develop metabolic syndrome (MetS), diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Common criteria underestimate adiposity and possibly underdiagnose MetS, particularly after abdominal radiotherapy. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis on the diagnostic and predictive value of nine newer MetS related biomarkers (adiponectin, leptin, uric acid, hsCRP, TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-6, apolipoprotein B (apoB), and lipoprotein(a) [lp(a)]) in survivors and adult non-cancer survivors was performed by searching PubMed and Embase. Evidence was summarized with GRADE after risk of bias evaluation (QUADAS-2/QUIPS). Eligible studies on promising biomarkers were pooled. We identified 175 general population and five CCS studies. In the general population, valuable predictive biomarkers are uric acid, adiponectin, hsCRP and apoB (high level of evidence), and leptin (moderate level of evidence). Valuable diagnostic biomarkers are hsCRP, adiponectin, uric acid, and leptin (low, low, moderate, and high level of evidence, respectively). Meta-analysis showed OR for hyperuricemia of 2.94 (age-/sex-adjusted), OR per unit uric acid increase of 1.086 (unadjusted), and AUC for hsCRP of 0.71 (unadjusted). Uric acid, adiponectin, hsCRP, leptin, and apoB can be alternative biomarkers in the screening setting for MetS in survivors, to enhance early identification of those at high risk of subsequent complications.

Abstract
PURPOSE to study relationship of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], indicators of systemic inflammation and humoral immunity with severity of atherosclerotic involvement of various vascular beds in women. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included in this study 148 women aged 69±11 years with results of instrumental investigation of coronary, carotid arteries, and arteries of lower extremities. According to results of coronary angiography and ultrasound study patients were distributed into two groups: with stenosing atherosclerosis (those with hemodynamically significant [>50%] atherosclerotic lesions in any of these vascular beds, n=108), and control (those without hemodynamically significant stenoses, n=40). In dependence of extent of atherosclerotic involvement patients with stenosing atherosclerosis were divided into subgroups: with lesions in one vascular bed (subgroup 1, n=44) and with lesions in two and more vascular beds (subgroup 2, n=64). All patients with stenosing atherosclerosis and 78% of control patients took statins. In all patients we measured lipid spectrum, Lp(a) concentration, C-reactive protein (CRP). Preparations of oxidized lipoproteins [oxLp(a)] were obtained by Cu2+-induced free radical oxidation at 37 °С for 3 hours. Titer of autoantibodies to Lp(a), LDL and their oxidized modifications was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Concentration of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol corrected on cholesterol in Lp(a) (LDLCh corr) was calculated by Dahlen modification of Friedewald formula. RESULTS Stenosing atherosclerosis was diagnosed in 60 of 74 women (80%) with Lp(a) concentration above median - 33 mg/dl (in 38 multifical). Increase of blood serum Lp(a) concentration was associated with presence of isolated as well as multifocal atherosclerosis according to unifactorial, multifactorial, and logistic analysis, irrespective of other factors of risk and indicators of inflammation. According to results of logistic regression analysis increase of Lp(a) concentration by 1 mg/dl was associated with 1 % elevation of probability of appearance and development of multifocal atherosclerosis in women. Low level of class IgM autoantibodies to Lp(a) was linked with detection of stenosing atherosclerosis in any of 3 vascular beds (1st vs. 4th quartile of IgM autoantibodies concentration - OR 7.6., 95%CI 1.9-29.4; р=0.004) and had diagnostic significance. Indicators of systemic inflammation such as CRP and circulating immune complexes were high and had diagnostic significance for detection of multifocal atherosclerosis in studied women. However none of indicators was predictor of appearance of stenosing atherosclerosis according to data of logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION Elevated concentration of Lp(a) is an independent predictor of risk of development stenosing atherosclerosis in various vascular beds and appearance of multifocal irrespective of other risk factors, indicators of systemic inflammation, and factors of humoral immunity in women. Markers of inflammation, as well as IgM autoantibodies against Lp(a) have diagnostic value for detection of patients stenosing lesions ib one or several vascular beds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) provides anatomical, biochemical, and physiological support to the left ventricle. ECM proteins are difficult to detect using unbiased proteomic approaches due to solubility issues and a relatively low abundance compared to cytoplasmic and mitochondrial proteins present in highly prevalent cardiomyocytes. Areas covered: Proteomic capabilities have dramatically improved over the past 20 years, due to enhanced sample preparation protocols and increased capabilities in mass spectrometry (MS), database searching, and bioinformatics analysis. This review summarizes technological advancements made in proteomic applications that make ECM proteomics highly feasible. Expert commentary: Proteomic analysis of the ECM provides an important contribution to our understanding of the molecular and cellular processes associated with cardiovascular disease. Using results generated from proteomics approaches in basic science applications and integrating proteomics templates into clinical research protocols will aid in efforts to personalize medicine.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate lipids and C-reactive protein serum levels in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) in the Polish population. Methods 96 patients were studied with PEX and 79 control subjects. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol and CRP serum levels, and TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C indexes were assessed. Results There were no significant differences in concentration of lipids and values of TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C between PEX and control groups. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein was not increased in patients with PEX. Conclusions Our results cast doubt on the opinion on the possible PEX and vascular diseases relation. Further studies on this subject are mandatory.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION High Blood Pressure (HBP), Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Metabolic Syndrome (MS) and Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) are among the main causes of death worldwide and HBP is one of the most common chronic health problem representing an important and modifiable risk factor for vascular events and mortality. AIM To study the association among high sensitivity CRP levels, and the biochemical, and anthropometric profile in hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients who underwent arteriography. MATERIALS AND METHODS This research was performed at the Haemodynamic Laboratory of the University Hospital in the city of Marilia - state of São Paulo, Brazil. Ninety-five subjects who underwent arteriography were included. Anthropometric (body mass index and waist circumference) and biochemical parameters (glycaemia, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, triglycerides, and high sensitivity C reactive protein), were evaluated. Variables pertaining to blood pressure, atherogenic indices, diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and catheterization details were collected. Statistical analysis was performed with Chi-square test, Fisher, Student t-test and ANOVA complemented by Tukey test. RESULTS Our results showed that 78.95% of the patients who underwent arteriography were suffering from HBP. Hypertensive individuals had significantly higher glycaemia (124.14±45.33 mg/dL) or DM, higher values of triglycerides (195.27±74.52 mg/dL), waist circumference (98.52±12.52 cm), body mass index (29.99±1.41 kg/m2) and hs-CRP (0.53±0.44 mg/dL). Most of the hypertensive patients (93.33%) presented with MS and were related to the presence of more severe lesions in the arteries and had passed through more invasive procedures like angioplasty and surgery. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that blood pressure control is of paramount importance to ensure better quality of life and life expectancy as it is associated with several risk factors that increase the morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Background Tartrate-resistant phosphatase isoform 5a is expressed in tumor-associated macrophages and is a biomarker of chronic inflammation. Herein, we correlated serum tartrate-resistant phosphatase isoform 5a levels with metabolic syndrome status and made comparisons with traditional markers of inflammation, including c-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Methods One hundred healthy volunteers were randomly selected, and cut-off points for metabolic syndrome related inflammatory biomarkers were determined using receiver operating characteristic curves. Linear and logistic regression models were subsequently used to correlate inflammatory markers with the risk of metabolic syndrome. Results Twenty-two participants met the criteria for metabolic syndrome, and serum tartrate-resistant phosphatase isoform 5a levels of >5.8 μg/L were associated with metabolic syndrome (c-statistics, 0.730; p = 0.001; 95% confidence interval, 0.618-0.842). In addition, 1 μg/L increases in tartrate-resistant phosphatase isoform 5a levels were indicative of a 1.860 fold increase in the risk of metabolic syndrome (p = 0.012). Conclusions Elevated serum tartrate-resistant phosphatase isoform 5a levels are associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome, with a cut-off level of 5.8 μg/L.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is characterized by a set of risk factors, which causes metabolic and inflammatory changes that increase vascular risk and may promote the development of atherosclerosis. Changes in lifestyle are related to obesity and associated diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, MS and cardiovascular disease (CVD). AIMS This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of MS components and high sensitivity C Reactive Protein (hsCRP) in patients undergoing arteriography. METHODS A group of patients undergoing arteriography was recruited in order we could evaluate the metabolic profile, levels of hsCRP and number of obstructions in the arteries. RESULTS Most of our patients underwent arteriography are more likely to have hypertension, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and central obesity, thus, MS is prevalent in this group. They also tend to exhibit higher values of hsCRP, lower values for the estimative of the size of the LDL-c particle and higher number of obstruction in the arteries. CONCLUSION We may say that the improvement of the above parameters could reduce inflammation and oxidative stress and vascular damages what would extend life expectancy and quality of life of this group of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current concept of overweight/obesity is most likely related to a combination of increased caloric intake and decreased energy expenditure. Widespread inflammation, associated with both conditions, appears to contribute to the development of some obesity-related comorbidities. Interventions that directly or indirectly target individuals at high risk of developing obesity have been largely proposed because of the increasing number of overweight/obese cases worldwide. The aim of the present study was to assess CXCL16, IL-17, and BMP-2 plasma factors in middle-aged and elderly women and relate them to an overweight or obese status. In total, 117 women were selected and grouped as eutrophic, overweight, and obese, according to anthropometric parameters. Analyses of anthropometric and circulating biochemical parameters were followed by plasma immunoassays for CXCL-16, IL-17, and BMP-2. RESULTS Plasma mediators increased in all overweight and obese individuals, with the exception of BMP-2 in the elderly group, whereas CXCL16 levels were shown to differentiate overweight and obese individuals. Overweight and/or obese middle-aged and elderly individuals presented with high LDL, triglycerides, and glycemia levels. Anthropometric parameters indicating increased-cardiovascular risk were positively correlated with CXCL-16, BMP-2, and IL-17 levels in overweight and obese middle-aged and elderly individuals. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence that CXCL-16, IL-17, and BMP-2 are potential plasma indicators of inflammatory status in middle-aged and elderly women; therefore, further investigation of obesity-related comorbidities is recommended. CXCL16, in particular, could be a potential marker for middle-aged and elderly individuals transitioning from eutrophic to overweight body types, which represents an asymptomatic and dangerous condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a growing body of evidence indicating that pediatric survivors of cancer are at a greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome. This study evaluated some probable predictors of metabolic syndrome (MS), such as leptin and adiponectin concentrations, the leptin/adiponectin ratio, insulin resistance, and adiposity, in a sample of child survivors of lymphoma and leukemia in Mexico City. METHODS Fifty two children (leukemia n = 26, lymphoma n = 26), who were within the first 5 years after cessation of therapy, were considered as eligible to participate in the study. Testing included fasting insulin, glucose, adipokines and lipids; body fat mass was measured by DXA. The MS components were analyzed according to tertiles of adipokines, insulin resistance, and adiposity. Comparisons between continuous variables were performed according to the data distribution. The MS components were analyzed according to tertiles of adipokines, insulin resistance, and adiposity. With the purpose of assessing the risk of a present MS diagnosis, odds ratios (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (95% IC) were obtained using logistic regression analysis according to the various metabolic markers. RESULTS The median children age was 12.1 years, and the interval time from the completion of therapy to study enrollment was 4 years. Among the MS components, the prevalence of HDL-C low was most common (42%), followed by central obesity (29%). The HOMA-IR (OR 9.0, 95% CI 2.0; 41.1), body fat (OR 5.5, 95% CI 1.6; 19.3), leptin level (OR 5.7, 95% CI 1.6; 20.2) and leptin/adiponectin ratio (OR 9.4, 95% CI 2.0; 49.8) in the highest tertile, were predictive factors of developing MS; whereas the lowest tertile of adiponectin was associated with a protective effect but not significant. CONCLUSIONS Biomarkers such as HOMA-IR, leptin and leptin/adiponectin are associated with each of the components of the MS and with a heightened risk of suffering MS among children survivors of cancer. Given the close relationship between MS with risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, it is imperative to implement prevention measures in this population and especially in developing countries where these pathologies have become the leading cause of death.

Abstract
Resumo Observa-se, nas populações mundiais, aumento do sedentarismo e aumento do consumo de gorduras e açúcares, sendo estes vinculados normalmente aos alimentos industrializados. A consequência disso rapidamente se manifestou no aumento do sobrepeso/obesidade e na instalação de alterações fisiológicas e metabólicas, como a Síndrome Metabólica, que é representada por alterações na glicemia, nos lipídeos e na pressão arterial. Há evidências de ligação estreita entre estas alterações e os processos inflamatórios, que também podem estar associados ao estresse oxidativo. Estas condições levam à patogênese das alterações vasculares ou intensificam os processos metabólicos que acompanham a Síndrome Metabólica. O objetivo desta revisão foi comparar as inúmeras referências literárias que mostram correlação entre os componentes da Síndrome Metabólica e o aumento dos mediadores de inflamação. Para isso, utilizou-se Pubmed, Scopus, Lilacs e Scielo como base de dados, sendo que os artigos selecionados dataram principalmente dos últimos cinco anos.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The proinflammatory state induced by obesity plays an important role in obesity-related metabolic complications. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to evaluate whether dietary supplementation with α-lipoic acid (LA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), separately or in combination, could improve inflammatory and cardiovascular disease risk markers in healthy overweight or obese women consuming an energy-restricted diet. METHODS Within the context of the Effects of Lipoic Acid and Eicosapentaenoic Acid in Human Obesity (OBEPALIP) study, Caucasian women (n = 73) aged 20-50 y with a BMI (in kg/m2) between 27.5 and 40 consumed an energy-restricted diet for 10 wk after being randomly assigned to 1 of 4 parallel experimental groups: a control group or groups supplemented with 1.3 g EPA/d, 0.3 g LA/d, or both. Secondary outcomes were measured at baseline and at the end of the study. These included circulating inflammatory [C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, interleukin 6 (IL-6), chemerin, haptoglobin, amyloid A, and leukocytes] and cardiovascular disease risk markers (platelet count and circulating apelin, asymmetric dimethylarginine, vascular endothelial growth factor, and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1). Gene expression of IL6, adhesion G protein-coupled receptor E1 (ADGRE1), interleukin 10 (IL10), chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2, and adiponectin was measured in subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue biopsies at endpoint. RESULTS Supplementation with LA caused a greater reduction in some circulating inflammatory risk markers, such as CRP (-0.13 ± 0.07 mg/dL compared with 0.06 ± 0.07 mg/dL, P < 0.05) and leukocyte count (-0.74 ± 0.18 × 103/mm3 compared with 0.06 ± 0.18 × 103/mm3, P < 0.01), than in the groups that were not supplemented with LA. In contrast, the fall in apelin concentrations that accompanied weight loss was less pronounced in groups that were supplemented with LA (-1.1 ± 4.9 pg/mL) than in those that were not (-21.3 ± 4.8 pg/mL, P < 0.01). In adipose tissue, compared with those who did not receive EPA, EPA-supplemented groups exhibited a downregulation of ADGRE1 (0.7 ± 0.1-fold compared with 1.0 ± 0.1-fold) (P < 0.05) and an upregulation of IL10 (1.8 ± 0.2-fold compared with 1.0 ± 0.2-fold) (P < 0.05) gene expression. CONCLUSIONS Dietary supplementation with LA improves some systemic inflammatory and cardiovascular disease-related risk markers in healthy overweight or obese women independently of weight loss, whereas EPA modulates inflammation-related genes in adipose tissue.
