Abstract
Following two requests from the European Commission (EC), the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the revision of the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for vitamin D and to propose a conversion factor (CF) for calcidiol monohydrate into vitamin D3 for labelling purposes. Vitamin D refers to ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and calcidiol monohydrate. Systematic reviews of the literature were conducted to assess the relative bioavailability of calcidiol monohydrate versus vitamin D3 on serum 25(OH)D concentrations, and for priority adverse health effects of excess vitamin D intake, namely persistent hypercalcaemia/hypercalciuria and endpoints related to musculoskeletal health (i.e. falls, bone fractures, bone mass/density and indices thereof). Based on the available evidence, the Panel proposes a CF for calcidiol monohydrates of 2.5 for labelling purposes. Persistent hypercalciuria, which may be an earlier sign of excess vitamin D than persistent hypercalcaemia, is selected as the critical endpoint on which to base the UL for vitamin D. A lowest-observed-adverse-effect-level (LOAEL) of 250 μg/day is identified from two randomised controlled trials in humans, to which an uncertainty factor of 2.5 is applied to account for the absence of a no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL). A UL of 100 μg vitamin D equivalents (VDE)/day is established for adults (including pregnant and lactating women) and for adolescents aged 11-17 years, as there is no reason to believe that adolescents in the phase of rapid bone formation and growth have a lower tolerance for vitamin D compared to adults. For children aged 1-10 years, a UL of 50 μg VDE/day is established by considering their smaller body size. Based on available intake data, European populations are unlikely to exceed the UL, except for regular users of food supplements containing high doses of vitamin D.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the relation between visceral adipose tissue (VAT), as a proxy for metabolically unhealthy obesity, muscle, as a proxy for muscle quality and sarcopenia, and bone, as a proxy for bone mineral density and osteoporosis. Other variables, such metabolic syndrome, nutritional status, number of diseases, kidney and liver function and inflammation were assessed as direct or indirect effects. This study used structural equation modeling (SEM) in a sample of 713 older women (mean age 82.1 ± 6.3). The results indicate a positive statistically significant association between bone and muscle mass (β = 0.195, <0.001) and nutritional status and muscle mass (β = 0.139, p < 0.001), but negative association between age with muscle mass (β = −0.509, p < 0.001) and nutritional status (estimates: −2.264, p < 0.001). A negative association between VAT and muscle mass was also reported (β = −1.88, p < 0.001). A negative statistically significant association was reported between bone mineral density and functional status (β = −1.081, p < 0.001), and a positive association between functional status and muscle mass (β = 9.000, p < 0.001). In addition, functional status was positively statistically associated with cognitive performance (β = 0.032, p < 0.001). The SEM method demonstrates that the VAT, muscle mass and bone mineral density are associated, but the form of the relation is different in relation to different factors, such as nutritional status, mental and functional status, age, and number of pathologies, having different impacts on metabolic outcomes. SEM is a feasible technique for understanding the complex mechanisms of frailty in the elderly.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a leading cause of death. The prevalence of T2DM in countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, including Jordan, is among the highest worldwide. The reason(s) behind the epidemic nature of T2DM in Jordan are unknown but warrant further exploration. Studies have indicated that T2DM could be influenced by diet and/or genetic background. Evidence suggests that numerous patients with T2DM are deficient in vitamin D. The activity of vitamin D on its target tissues may be influenced by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene. It was therefore hypothesized that SNPs in VDR could modify the risk of T2DM. To test this hypothesis, 125 patients with T2DM were recruited along with 125 controls. The study subjects were genotyped for variations in rs2228570, rs1544410, rs7975232, and rs731236 SNPs in the VDR. The levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] were measured from the serum. The analysis revealed that reduced 25(OH)D and age were associated with the risk of T2DM (P<0.05). Moreover, under a dominant inheritance model, the GG genotype of rs2228570 was revealed to increase the risk of T2DM in univariate and multivariate analysis (P<0.05). Additionally, a chromosomal block containing the GAAG haplotype of VDR SNPs increased the risk of T2DM (OR=1.909; CI: 1.260-2.891; P=0.0021). Collectively, the present study revealed that low levels of serum 25(OH)D and rs2228570 of the VDR gene are associated with the risk of T2DM.

Abstract
Background In recent years, obesity and vitamin D deficiency are more prevalent among adolescents. Improving our knowledge of the link between vitamin D and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is essential for the health of adolescents. This study aimed to examine the connection between serum vitamin D levels and VAT mass among adolescents participating in the United States. Methods This is a cross-sectional study that used data from the 2011 to 2015 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The connection between serum vitamin D levels and VAT was investigated using weighted multiple linear regression models. Potential nonlinear relationships were explored using smooth curve fitting. Results The analysis included 3171 adolescents aged 12–19 years. Vitamin D levels were shown to be inversely linked with VAT in the full-adjusted model (β = − 0.34, 95% CI: − 0.49 to − 0.19). When stratified analyses by gender, this negative relationship persisted in the girls’ group (β = − 0.39, 95% CI: − 0.60 to − 0.19), but not in the boys’ group (β = − 0.06, 95% CI: − 0.25 to 0.13). When stratified analysis by race, this negative relationship persisted in the Mexican American group (β = − 0.61, 95% CI: − 1.03 to − 0.19), and the non-Hispanic White group (β = − 0.27, 95% CI: − 0.54 to − 0.01), but not in the other groups. Conclusions Our findings confirmed that serum vitamin D levels negatively correlated with VAT among adolescents in the United State, especially in girls, the Mexican American and non-Hispanic White. Further research is needed to determine whether increasing serum vitamin D levels decrease VAT among adolescents. Abstract
Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated an association between abdominal obesity, determined by waist circumference (WC), and vitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency in older adults. However, longitudinal evidence is based only on general obesity determined using body mass index (BMI). We investigated whether abdominal obesity is associated with the incidence of 25(OH)D insufficiency (>30 and ≤50 nmol/L) and deficiency (≤30 nmol/L), and whether vitamin D supplementation modifies these associations. We included 2459 participants aged ≥50 years from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) with 25(OH)D sufficiency (>50 nmol/L) at baseline. Abdominal obesity was defined as >88 cm for women and >102 cm for men. After 4 years, 25(OH)D concentrations were reassessed. Multinomial logistic regression models controlled by covariates were performed. Abdominal obesity increased the risk of the incidence of 25(OH)D insufficiency (RRR = 1.36; 95% CI: 1.01−1.83) and deficiency (RRR = 1.64; 95% CI: 1.05−2.58). These risks were maintained when excluding individuals who took vitamin D supplementation (RRR = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.02−1.88) and (RRR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.02−2.56). Abdominal obesity is associated with the risk of incidence of low 25(OH)D concentrations. WC seems to be an adequate tool for screening individuals with obesity and at potential risk of developing these conditions.

Abstract
The extraskeletal effect of vitamin D on adipose tissue biology and modulation in human obesity is of great interest and has been extensively investigated. Current evidence from preclinical and clinical studies in human adipose tissue suggests that the anti-inflammatory effects of vitamin D are evident and consistent, whereas the effects of vitamin D on adipocyte differentiation, adipogenesis, and energy metabolism and the effects of vitamin D supplementation on adipokine levels are inconclusive. Interventional studies related to medical and surgical weight loss in humans have shown small or no improvement in vitamin D status. Additionally, the benefit of vitamin D supplementation for the reduction in visceral adipose tissue has only been demonstrated in a few studies. Overall, the findings on the relationship between vitamin D and visceral adipose tissue in humans are still inconclusive. Further studies are required to confirm the beneficial effects of vitamin D on ameliorating adipose tissue dysfunction.

Abstract
A method using polypyrrole-coated Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@PPy composites) based extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography was developed for adsorption and detection of trace vitamin D3 (VD3) in aquatic products. The fabricated Fe3O4@PPy composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Fe3O4@PPy composites showed efficient adsorption of VD3 at pH 9.0 and 25 °C with a dose of 25 mg per 10 mL of sample solution and an adsorption time of 11 min. Methanol was selected as the desorption solvent to recover VD3 from Fe3O4@PPy composites after 3 min of static treatment. Fe3O4@PPy composites can be used for VD3 adsorption at least two times. The developed method showed a good linearity for VD3 determination in the range of 0.1-10 μg/mL with a correlation coefficient of 0.9989. The limits of detection and quantification were 10 ng/mL and 33 ng/mL, respectively. The recovery of VD3 in a spiking test was 97.72% with a relative standard deviation value of 1.78%. The content of VD3 in nine aquatic products was determined with this method. Our results show that Fe3O4@PPy composites provide a convenient method for the adsorption and determination of VD3 from the complex matrix of aquatic products.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global pandemic. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with susceptibility to infectious disease. In this study, the association between COVID-19 outcomes and vitamin D levels in patients attending a COVID-19 reference center in Mexico City are examined. METHODS Consecutive patients with confirmed COVID-19 were evaluated. All patients underwent clinical evaluation and follow-up, laboratory measurements and a thoracic computerized tomography, including the measurement of epicardial fat thickness. Low vitamin D was defined as levels <20 ng/ml (<50nmol/L) and deficient Vitamin D as a level ≤12 ng/ml (<30 nmol/L). RESULTS Of the 551 patients included, low vitamin D levels were present in 45.6% and deficient levels in 10.9%. Deficient Vitamin D levels were associated with mortality (HR 2.11, 95%CI 1.24-3.58, p = 0.006) but not with critical COVID-19, adjusted for age, sex, body-mass index and epicardial fat. Using model-based causal mediation analyses the increased risk of COVID-19 mortality conferred by low vitamin D levels was partly mediated by its effect on D-dimer and cardiac ultrasensitive troponins. Notably, increased risk of COVID-19 mortality conferred by low vitamin D levels was independent of BMI and epicardial fat. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency (≤12 ng/ml or <30 nmol/L), is independently associated with COVID-19 mortality after adjustment for visceral fat (epicardial fat thickness). Low vitamin D may contribute to a pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic state, increasing the risk for adverse COVID-19 outcomes.

Abstract
CONTEXT Although previous observational studies have investigated the association between waist circumference (WC) values and serum vitamin D levels, findings have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVE A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of abdominal obesity (based on WC) on vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency in adults. DATA SOURCES A systematic search of the published literature up to September 2020 was conducted in electronic databases, including MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) (Web of Science), Scopus, and Google Scholar, for observational studies that investigated the association between abdominal obesity (based on WC) or different categories of WC as the exposure and serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels as the outcome. DATA EXTRACTION Eighteen cross-sectional studies were included in the review. The relationship between WC values and combined serum vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency (<30 ng/mL) or vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) was evaluated. DATA ANALYSIS Combining 8 effect sizes from 5 investigations, including 7997 individuals, illustrated that the highest category of WC, compared with the lowest category of WC, was related to 82% increased odds of combined serum vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency (<30 ng/mL) (OR: 1.82; 95% CI: 1.34, 2.49). Moreover, in studies that investigated both genders together, the highest category of WC, compared with the lowest category of WC, was associated with 61% increased odds of serum vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) (OR: 1.61; 95% CI: 1.12, 2.31). The same results were obtained for almost all subgroups for several covariates. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies confirmed that increased WC was related to the elevated risk of combined vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in adults. Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased adiposity and decreased bone density. It is not known if vitamin D is linked to adiposity measures and bone mass in postmenopausal Qatar women. We investigated an association between serum vitamin D [25-hydroxyvitmain D (25(OH)D)] and adiposity measurements in postmenopausal women using Qatar Biobank data (n = 935). The post-menopausal status was self-reported by participants. Multivariate adjusted regression was applied to determine the association between serum 25(OH)D and body adiposity markers and bone mass. Serum 25(OH)D was significantly, inversely associated with body mass index (p < 0.0005), waist circumference (0.044), fat mass (p < 0.003), gynoid fat (p < 0.001), and android fat (p < 0.009). Serum 25(OH)D appeared to have an inverse 'U' association with several adiposity measures. Overall, body adiposity markers were the lowest in the 4th quartile serum 25(OH)D and significantly lower compared to the 1st quartile serum 25(OH)D. In multivariable adjusted analysis, no association was found between serum 25(OH)D concentration and bone mass when serum 25(OH)D was categorized. In a continuous variable analysis, the association between 25(OH)D and bone mass was significant, non-linear, inverse 'U'. In conclusion, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was inversely associated with adiposity measures and non-linearly associated to bone mass in postmenopausal Qatari women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to assess the correlation between vitamin D serum level and visceral fat tissue during early pregnancy. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed in Pernambuco, Brazil. 190 low risk pregnant women (8-16 gestational weeks) were eligible. Visceral adipose tissue was measured by ultrasonography following the technique described by Armellini. The 25(OH) D in serum was determined through chemiluminescence. The Spearman correlation test was applied to evaluate the correlation between vitamin D serum level and VAT, considering p < 0.05 to be significant. RESULTS Vitamin D insufficiency was present in 129 (67.8 %) of subjects. Pregnant women with or without vitamin D deficiency did not differ in age, gestational age, nutritional status and visceral adipose tissue. No correlation between visceral adipose tissue and 25(OH) D was observed: - 0.057 (p = 0.435). CONCLUSIONS Maternal visceral adipose tissue and vitamin D serum level are not correlated during pregnancy.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency may play an important role in obesity. The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between vitamin D status and visceral fat accumulation in males with type 2 diabetes. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 128 adult males with type 2 diabetes in Qinhuangdao. The nutritional status of vitamin D was assessed by circulating levels of 25(OH)D, vitamin D deficiency <30 nmol/L, vitamin D insufficiency 30-50 nmol/L and vitamin D sufficiency >50 nmol/L. Accumulation of visceral fat was defined as visceral fat area ≥100 cm2. The prevalence of visceral fat accumulation was 35.9%. The prevalence of visceral fat accumulation was 14.6%, 45.1% and 50.0% in type 2 diabetes with vitamin D sufficiency, vitamin D insufficiency and vitamin D deficiency, respectively. In multiple logistic regression analysis, subjects with vitamin D insufficiency [OR=4.255, p=0.012] and vitamin D deficiency [OR=6.122, p=0.022] were more likely to have visceral fat accumulation compared with subjects with vitamin D sufficiency. Visceral fat accumulation linked to the cluster of cardiometabolic risk factor in males with type 2 diabetes. There was a significant correlation between vitamin D status and visceral fat accumulation in males with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the effects of 1,25(OH)2 D3 on lipid droplet (LD) growth in 3T3-L1 adipocytes of hypertrophy model. Cocktail method was used to induce differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells. After 8 days, the cells were modeled by 100, 300, 600, and 900 μM palmitic acid (PA) for 24 hr. The best concentration of modeling was screened by MTT results and triglycerides (TG) content. The model cells were intervened by 1, 10, and 100 nM 1,25(OH)2 D3 for 24 hr. Then, the TG content of cells were detected and stained by oil red O. The diameter and quantity of LDs were analyzed. mRNA relative expression levels of genes related to LD (CIDE-a, Fsp27, PLIN-1), upstream response factor (PPAR-α, PPAR-γ, and VDR), and TG metabolism (long chain acyl-CoA synthetase 3, 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 1, adipose triglyceride lipase, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2, glycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 3, glycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 4, hormone-sensitive lipase, mannosyl (alpha-1,3-)-glycoprotein beta-1,2-N-acetyl glucosaminyl transferase, phosphatidic acid phosphatase, and uncoupling protein-1) were detected by RT-qPCR. A total of 300 μM PA was selected as the optimum concentration. Compared with model group, 10 and 100 nM 1,25(OH)2 D3 decreased the average diameter, increased the quantity of LDs, upregulated PPAR-α and PLIN-1 mRNA expression levels, and downregulated CIDE-a and Fsp27 mRNA expression levels significantly (p < .05). However, 1 nM 1,25(OH)2 D3 did not alter LD morphology and TG content. mRNA expression levels of long chain acyl-CoA synthetase 3, 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 1, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2, glycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 3, and glycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 4 in 10 and 100 nM groups were significantly lower than those in the model group (p < .05); mRNA expression levels of adipose triglyceride lipase, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1, hormone-sensitive lipase, mannosyl (alpha-1,3-)-glycoprotein beta-1,2-N-acetyl glucosaminyl transferase, phosphatidic acid phosphatase, and uncoupling protein-1 were significantly increased in the 100 nM group (p < .05). The 10 and 100 nM 1,25(OH)2 D3 can inhibit LD fusion, promote LD decomposition, reduce LD volume, and inhibit lipogenesis through the PPAR-α signaling pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body mass index, an estimate of body fat percentage, has been previously shown to be associated with metabolic disorders. However, there is little data on the associations between a body shape index (ABSI) or modified body adiposity index (MBAI), which provide valuable definitions of body fat, with serum biochemical parameter levels. Therefore, this study was conducted to find either ABSI or MBAI associations with serum biochemical parameter levels in bariatric surgery candidates. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 776 bariatric surgery candidates (age range 18-69 years) between November 2010 and September 2017. Demographic data, anthropometric indices, biochemical parameters, and body composition analysis data were drawn from the National Obesity Surgery Database, Iran. ABSI and MBAI were calculated using related equations. A stepwise multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate whether ABSI or MBAI was associated with each serum biochemical parameter. RESULTS ABSI, age, and multivitamin/mineral supplementation (MVMS) were independently associated with serum vitamin D (β = 24.374, SE 10.756, P value 0.026; β = 0.022, SE 0.007, P value 0.002; β = 0.639, SE 0.235, P value 0.008). However, a negative association was observed between MBAI and vitamin D (β = - 0.037, SE 0.016, P value 0.025) in a model adjusted for age and MVMS. Additionally, MBAI and age showed a significant positive association with serum HDL-c (β = 0.185, SE 0.085, P value 0.028; β = 0.171, SE 0.033, P value < 0.001), although there was a negative association between male sex and HDL-c (β = - 4.004, SE 0.891, P value < 0.001). CONCLUSION ABSI and MBAI may be appropriate indices in predicting serum vitamin D and HDL-c levels.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and osteoporosis are two medical problems plaguing the ageing populations worldwide. Though seemingly distinctive to each other, metabolic derangements are shown to influence bone health. This review summarises the relationship between MetS and bone health derived from epidemiological studies and explains the mechanistic basis of this relationship. The discourse focuses on the link between MetS and bone mineral density, quantitative sonometric indices, geometry and fracture risk in humans. The interesting sex-specific trend in the relationship, probably due to factors related to body composition and hormonal status, is discussed. Mechanistically, each component of MetS affects the bone distinctly, forming a complex interacting network influencing the skeleton. Lastly, the effects of MetS management, such as pharmacotherapies, exercise and bariatric surgery, on bone, are presented. This review aims to highlight the significant relationship between MetS and bone, and proper management of MetS with the skeletal system in mind could prevent cardiovascular and bone complications.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to explore the clinical efficacy and safety of different methods of calcium supplementation in osteoporosis (OP). Patients with OP were divided into four groups, including the control, oral calcium supplementation, intravenous calcium supplementation and combined calcium supplementation groups. The duration of the calcium supplementation was 3-6 years. Medical records were collected and examined along with demographic data, the incidence of certain diseases and adverse reactions. All subjects in the three treatment groups exhibited statistically significant reductions in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels, visual analog score (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) compared with the respective pre-treatment values. Furthermore, compared with prior to treatment, the lumbar and hip bone mineral density (BMD) of patients receiving intravenous calcium supplementation was significantly increased. In addition, after treatment, the lumbar and hip BMD was significantly increased, whereas ALP levels, VAS and ODI were significantly decreased in the oral calcium supplementation group compared with the control group. Also, compared with the control and oral calcium supplementation groups, the BMD was significantly increased, whereas ALP, VAS, ODI, the rate of infection and tooth loss, the incidence of fragility fractures, joint replacement surgery, arrhythmia, lumbar disc herniation and cerebral infarction were significantly decreased in the two groups treated with intravenous calcium supplementation. The results of the present study may enable a better understanding of the effectiveness and safety of the different methods for supplementing calcium in OP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obese individuals are known to be at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency than normal-weight individuals. Cutaneous synthesis is a major source of vitamin D; however, objective measurements of sun exposure are lacking in this population. OBJECTIVE To assess the validity of a regression model using sun exposure in lean individuals to estimate serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in overweight and obese individuals, and to develop a prediction equation for serum 25(OH)D in overweight and obese adults. METHODS This study was a secondary analysis of a 15-wk controlled feeding study investigating the effects of dairy consumption on body composition. Information regarding sun exposure, including day, hour, time outside, and clothing, were self-assessed in sun exposure diaries. Personal sun exposure energy (joules) was assessed by downloading time-specific ultraviolet B energy data from climate stations. Skin reflectance was measured using a Minolta 2500d spectrophotometer. Dietary intake of vitamin D was known. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. Body composition was determined from whole-body dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography scans. RESULTS Sun exposure was positively related to serum 25(OH)D (r = 0.26; P ≤ 0.05) and inversely related to total fat mass, android fat, and BMI (r = -0.25, -0.30, and -0.32, respectively). The modified Hall model significantly overestimated serum 25(OH)D in overweight and obese adults by 27.33-80.98 nmol/L, depending on the sun exposure calculation. A new regression model was developed for overweight and obese persons that explained 29.1% of the variance in postintervention 25(OH)D concentrations and included sun exposure, skin reflectance, total fat mass, total lean mass, and intra-abdominal adipose tissue as predictors. CONCLUSION Major determinants of serum 25(OH)D concentration in healthy overweight and obese individuals include sun exposure, skin reflectance, and adiposity. Addition of adiposity terms to the prior model significantly improved predictive ability in overweight and obese men and women. (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT00858312).

Abstract
Background: The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTW) phenotype and vitamin D status in type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in subjects with type 2 diabetes. This study enrolled 338 type 2 diabetic (190 males and 148 females). The HTW phenotype was defined as serum triglyceride concentrations ≥1.7 mmol/L and waist circumference ≥90 cm (male) and 85 cm (female). Multiple logistic regression models were used for modeling relationships between HTW phenotype and vitamin D status. Results: The prevalence of HTW phenotype was 36.4%. The prevalence of HTW phenotype was 10.5%, 27.2%, and 41.6% in type 2 diabetes with vitamin D sufficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, and vitamin D deficiency, respectively. In multiple logistic regression analysis, subjects with vitamin D deficiency were more likely to have HTW phenotype (OR=6.222, 95%CI: 1.307-29.620, P=0.022) compared with subjects with vitamin D sufficiency. Conclusions: There was a significant correlation between HTW phenotype and vitamin D status in type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Obesity has been linked with vitamin D deficiency in a number of cross-sectional studies, reviews and meta-analyses. The aim of the present study was to assess the correlations of plasma 25(OH) vitamin D levels with indices of body composition examined by DXA with an emphasis on lean and bone mass as well as on indices such as android/gynoid fat, appendicular lean mass, fat-mass indexes (FMI) and fat-free mass indexes (FFMI). 62 adult subjects consented to participate – 27 men (43.5%) and 35 women (56.5%). Their mean age was 45.3 ± 9.5 years. Fan-beam dual-energy X-ray (DXA) body composition analysis was performed on a Lunar Prodigy Pro bone densitometer with software version 12.30. Vitamin D was measured by electro-hemi-luminescent detection as 25(OH) D Total (ECLIA, Elecsys 2010 analyzer, Roche Diagnostics). Statistical analyses were done using the SPSS 23.0 statistical package. The serum 25(OH)D level was correlated significantly only to the whole body bone mineral content, the appendicular lean mass index (ALMI) and the ALM-to-BMI index, underlining a predominant role for lean and fat-free mass. Vitamin D showed a very weak correlation to % Body Fat and the Fat Mass Index (FMI) in men only. Moreover, the multiple regression equation including the associated parameters could explain only 7% of the variation in the serum 25(OH) D levels. Our conclusion was, that there are differences in the associations of the vitamin D levels with the different body composition indices, but these associations are generally very weak and therefore – negligible.

Abstract
Studies have indicated that 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level in obese is lower than normal weight subjects; however, results of studies that investigated relationship between 25(OH)D and fat mass are inconsistent. In addition, several randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have studied the influence of cholecalciferol supplement on percentage fat mass (PFM) but their results are conflicting. The objectives were to investigate the association between vitamin D3 and PFM pooling together observational studies and RCTs. PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Scopus were comprehensively searched from inception to September 2016. The Fisher's Z (SE) of correlation coefficient and mean (SD) of changes in PFM from baseline were used to perform meta-analysis in observational studies and RCTs, respectively. To determine potential source of heterogeneity, subgroup and meta-regression analyses were conducted. Pooling correlation coefficients showed an inverse association between PFM (Fisher's Z: - 0.24, 95% CI: - 0.30 to -0 .18) and FM (Fisher's Z: - 0.32, 95% CI: - 0.43 to - 0.22) and 25(OH)D. Subgroup analysis revealed continent but not gender influence on the effect size. Meta-regression analysis indicated that age, latitude, and longitude are not sources of heterogeneity. Combining trials showed vitamin D3 supplementation had a mild but insignificant effect on PFM (- 0.31%, 95% CI: - 1.07 to 0.44). Subgroup analyses indicated that type of cholecalciferol and treatment regimens explain source of heterogeneity. Age, baseline body mass index, dose of cholecalciferol, length of study, female (%), and baseline 25(OH)D are not source of heterogeneity. In conclusion, our results state that 25(OH)D level is inversely correlated with PFM but cholecalciferol supplementation had no effect on PFM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite long hours of sunlight in Qatar and other regions of the Middle East, vitamin D deficiency has been rising. In parallel, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome has also been increasing in Qatar. Vitamin D levels have been associated with metabolic syndrome but the data are inconsistent and no studies have addressed these inter-relationships in a Middle Eastern population where the prevalence of these conditions is high. The objective is to investigate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its association with metabolic syndrome and its components in the Qatar Biobank population. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 1205 participants (702 women and 503 men) from the Qatar Biobank, comprising Qataris and non-Qataris between the ages of 18 and 80 years, was used to perform multivariate linear regression analyses to examine the association between metabolic syndrome and prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (defined as <20 ng ml-1 serum vitamin D levels) adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, season of blood collection, physical activity and education. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for all analyses. RESULTS Approximately 64% of participants were vitamin D deficient (<20 ng ml-1) with more men being deficient (68.6%) than women (61.3%). Serum vitamin D was 8% lower in individuals with metabolic syndrome (RR: 0.92, 95%CI: 0.87-0.98, P-value: 0.01) compared to individuals without metabolic syndrome. Waist circumference and HDL as well as high triglyceride levels were also significantly positively associated with vitamin D deficiency. No association was found between the other components of metabolic syndrome or diabetes and the presence of vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in this Qatari population. Presence of metabolic syndrome was associated with presence of vitamin D deficiency. Future prospective studies need to be conducted to investigate the potential for causality.

Abstract
Background Environmental perturbation of epigenetic mechanisms is linked to a growing number of diseases. Characterizing the role environmental factors play in modifying the epigenome is important for disease etiology. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient affecting brain, bone, heart, immune and reproductive health. Vitamin D insufficiency is a global issue, and the role in maternal and child health remains under investigation. Methods We used Collaborative Cross (CC) inbred mice to characterize the effect of maternal vitamin D depletion on offspring phenotypic and epigenetic outcomes at imprinted domains (H19/Igf2, Snrpn, Dlk1/Gtl2, and Grb10) in the soma (liver) and germline (sperm). We assessed outcomes in two generations of offspring to determine heritability. We used reciprocal crosses between lines CC001/Unc and CC011/Unc to investigate parent of origin effects. Results Maternal vitamin D deficiency led to altered body weight and DNA methylation in two generations of offspring. Loci assayed in adult liver and sperm were mostly hypomethylated, but changes were few and small in effect size (<7 % difference on average). There was no change in total expression of genes adjacent to methylation changes in neonatal liver. Methylation changes were cell type specific such that changes at IG-DMR were present in sperm but not in liver. Some methylation changes were distinct between generations such that methylation changes at the H19ICR in second-generation liver were not present in first-generation sperm or liver. Interestingly, some diet-dependent changes in body weight and methylation were seemingly influenced by parent of origin such that reciprocal crosses exhibited inverse effects. Conclusions These findings demonstrate that maternal vitamin D status plays a role in determining DNA methylation state in the germline and soma. Detection of methylation changes in the unexposed second-generation demonstrates that maternal vitamin D depletion can have long-term effects on the epigenome of subsequent generations. Differences in vitamin D-dependent epigenetic state between cell types and generations indicate perturbation of the epigenetic landscape rather than a targeted, locus-specific effect. While the biological importance of these subtle changes remains unclear, they warrant an investigation of epigenome-wide effects of maternal vitamin D depletion. Abstract
CONTEXT Bread can potentially be a suitable vehicle for fortification with vitamin D. OBJECTIVE This study was undertaken to evaluate the following: 1) the bioavailability of vitamin D from the fortified Iranian bread and 2) the possible effects of daily consumption of the fortified bread on certain health aspects. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted over 8 weeks in 90 healthy subjects aged 20-60 years. INTERVENTION Subjects were randomly allocated to one of three groups: 1) fortified bread (FP; 50 g bread fortified with 25 μg vitamin D3 plus placebo daily; n = 30); 2) supplement (SP; 50 g plain bread plus 25 μg vitamin D supplement daily; n = 30); and 3) control (CP; 50 g plain bread plus placebo daily; n = 30). OUTCOME MEASURES Initial and final anthropometric and biochemical assessments were performed. RESULTS The within-group changes of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were 39.0 ± 22.6 (P < .001), 28.9 ± 31.2 (P < .001), and -9.2 ± 12.3 nmol/L in the FP, SP, and CP groups, respectively. Only in FP and SP groups, serum intact PTH concentrations decreased approximately 13.5% and 14.5%, respectively. Visceral fat also showed a significant decrement in FP (-1.05% ± 1.4%; P ≤ .001) and SP (-0.96% ± 1.7%; P = .006). Serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration showed a within-group reduction in FP (-10.4 ± 11.2 mg/dL; P < .001) and an insignificant decrement in SP (-6.6 ± 20.2 mg/dL; P = .083). Serum high-density lipoprotein increased in both vitamin D-supplemented groups (FP: 9.7 ± 7.6 vs SP: 5.7 ± 6.7 mg/dL; P < .001). CONCLUSION Vitamin D-fortified bread could be potentially effective in raising circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels of the population to nearly adequate levels.
