Abstract
BACKGROUND The current knowledge about the efficacy and safety of dietary polyphenol administration in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is divergent. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the pooled efficacy and safety of dietary polyphenol administration in the treatment of patients with PCOS. METHODS The pubmed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of dietary polyphenol administration for the treatment of PCOS. English-language RCTs involving adults with PCOS were thoroughly searched in electronic databases from the time of their establishment to May 2024. Random-effects models were used because heterogeneity was derived from differences in intervention materials and study duration, among other confounding factors. The effect sizes of the outcomes in the pooled analysis are expressed as weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS A total of 15 RCTs involving 934 patients were finally included. Compared with control treatments, dietary polyphenol administration significantly reduced luteinizing hormone (LH) (WMD: -0.85, 95% CI [-1.32 to -0.38], p = 0.00), and prolactin levels (WMD: -3.73, 95% CI [-6.73 to -0.74], p = 0.01). Dietary polyphenol administration significantly reduced insulin levels (WMD: -0.85, 95% CI [-1.32 to -0.38], p = 0.00). Regarding lipid metabolism, dietary polyphenol administration only reduced triglyceride levels (WMD: -8.96, 95% CI [-16.44 to -1.49], p = 0.02). Malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD: -0.65, 95% CI [-0.68 to -0.62], p = 0.00), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) (WMD: -1.39, 95% CI [-2.41 to -0.37], p = 0.01) concentrations were significantly reduced by dietary polyphenol administration. None of the interventions significantly affected weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), homeostatic model-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), fasting blood sugar (FBS), glycated hemoglobin (HBA1c), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (T), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), estradiol (E2), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), quantitative insulin-sensitivity check index (QUICKI), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), C-peptide, C-reactive protein (CRP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, cholesterol/HDL, acne score, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or alkaline phosphatase (ALP). CONCLUSION Dietary polyphenol administration was efficacious in patients with PCOS in our study. This review might provide new insight into the treatment of patients with PCOS and the potential of daily polyphenol supplementation in patients with PCOS. Nevertheless, these results must be interpreted carefully as a result of the heterogeneity and risk of bias among the studies and we expect that more high-quality RCTs evaluating the efficacy and safety of dietary polyphenol adnimistration in patients with PCOS will be conducted in the future. Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe disorder that causes enormous loss of quality of life, and among the factors underlying MDD is stress in maternal deprivation (MD). In addition, classic pharmacotherapy has presented severe adverse effects. Centella asiatica (C. asiatica) demonstrates a potential neuroprotective effect but has not yet been evaluated in MD models. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of C. asiatica extract and the active compound madecassic acid on possible depressive-like behavior, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the hippocampus and serum of young rats submitted to MD in the first days of life. Rats (after the first day of birth) were separated from the mother for 3 h a day for 10 days. When adults, these animals were divided into groups and submitted to treatment for 14 days. After subjecting the animals to protocols of locomotor activity in the open field and behavioral despair in the forced swimming test, researchers then euthanized the animals. The hippocampus and serum were collected and analyzed for the inflammatory cytokines and oxidative markers. The C. asiatica extract and active compound reversed or reduced depressive-like behaviors, inflammation in the hippocampus, and oxidative stress in serum and hippocampus. These results suggest that C. asiatica and madecassic acid have potential antidepressant action, at least partially, through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant profiles.

Abstract
Pomegranate extract has potential benefits for women's reproductive health, including fertility enhancement, menstrual cycle regulation, pregnancy support, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment. It possesses antioxidant properties, reducing oxidative stress and improving fertility. Pomegranate extract may help regulate hormonal imbalances and promote regular menstrual cycles. The extract's rich nutrient profile supports placental development and fetal growth and may reduce the risk of preterm birth. Additionally, pomegranate extract shows promise in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing inflammation and oxidative damage in PCOS. Some studies suggest its potential anticancer properties, particularly against breast cancer. However, further research, including human clinical trials, is necessary to establish its effectiveness and safety. The current evidence is limited and primarily based on in vitro studies, animal studies, and clinical trials. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the benefits of pomegranate extract for women's reproductive health and breast cancer, serving as a reference for future research.

Abstract
Background Abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism (GALM) serve as both a cause and an inducer for the development of the disease. Improvement and treatment of GALM are an important stage to prevent the occurrence and development of the disease. However, current clinical treatment for GALM is limited. Ellagic acid (EA), a common polyphenol present in foods, has been shown to improve abnormalities in GALM observed in patients suffering from metabolic diseases. Objective This study used a meta-analysis method to systematically assess the effects of EA on GALM. Method As of November 8, 2023, a comprehensive search was conducted across 5 databases, namely, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which EA served as the primary intervention for diseases related to GALM. The risk of bias within the included studies was assessed according to the Cochrane Handbook. All statistical analyzes were performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Results In this study, a total of 482 articles were retrieved, resulting in the inclusion of 10 RCTs in the meta-analysis. The results showed that EA could reduce fasting blood glucose (FBG) (p = 0.008), increase insulin secretion (p = 0.01), improve insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) (p = 0.003), decrease triglyceride (TG) (p = 0.004), and reduce cholesterol (Chol) (p = 0.04) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c) (p = 0.0004). EA had no significant effect on waist circumference (WC), body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), 2 hours after prandial blood glucose (2 h-PG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c). Conclusions The effect of improvement in glucose and lipids of EA was closely related to the dose and the intervention time. EA can improve GALM caused by diseases. To corroborate the findings of this study and improve the reliability of the results, EA is imperative to refine the research methodology and increase the sample size in future investigations.

Abstract
PURPOSE Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries. The syndrome's etiology is multifactorial, involving genetic, hormonal, metabolic, and environmental factors. Given its diverse effects, managing PCOS requires a comprehensive approach. METHODS This study employed a Sprague-Dawley rat model to investigate the effects of ellagic acid on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Forty adult female rats were randomly divided into four groups: a control group, a healthy group receiving ellagic acid (200 mg/kg), a PCOS group, and an ellagic acid + PCOS group. PCOS was induced in the relevant groups through subcutaneous injection of estradiol valerate (2 mg/kg), and ellagic acid was administered via subcutaneous injections for 14 days. Blood samples were collected for hormone analysis using the ELISA method, and ovarian tissues were processed for histological examination. RESULT Ellagic acid treatment showed reduced LH levels and restoration of follicular development, particularly primordial and graafian follicles, along with modulation of miRNA-21 expression. Moreover, ellagic acid exhibited positive effects on ovarian morphology, including decreased theca layer thickness, increased oocyte diameter, and improvements in antral and preovulatory follicles. This suggests ellagic acid's potential in addressing follicular development and oocyte quality in PCOS. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest ellagic acid as a potential complementary approach in PCOS management. While the study is promising, further research, including clinical trials, is required to elucidate ellagic acid's mechanisms and clinical efficacy in human PCOS subjects.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS), affecting various cell types and organs. In MetS animal models, mitochondria exhibit decreased quality control, characterized by abnormal morphological structure, impaired metabolic activity, reduced energy production, disrupted signaling cascades, and oxidative stress. The aberrant changes in mitochondrial function exacerbate the progression of metabolic syndrome, setting in motion a pernicious cycle. From this perspective, reversing mitochondrial dysfunction is likely to become a novel and powerful approach for treating MetS. Unfortunately, there are currently no effective drugs available in clinical practice to improve mitochondrial function. Recently, L-lactate has garnered significant attention as a valuable metabolite due to its ability to regulate mitochondrial metabolic processes and function. It is highly likely that treating MetS and its related complications can be achieved by correcting mitochondrial homeostasis disorders. In this review, we comprehensively discuss the complex relationship between mitochondrial function and MetS and the involvement of L-lactate in regulating mitochondrial metabolism and associated signaling pathways. Furthermore, it highlights recent findings on the involvement of L-lactate in common pathologies of MetS and explores its potential clinical application and further prospects, thus providing new insights into treatment possibilities for MetS.

Abstract
Background and aim: A large number of recent studies have reported on the use of antioxidants in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effects on PCOS. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the use of antioxidants in treating PCOS. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4. Stata17.0 software was used to conduct sensitivity analyses. Results: This meta-analysis included 49 articles and 62 studies. The sample comprised 1657 patients with PCOS from the antioxidant group and 1619 with PCOS from the placebo group. The meta-analysis revealed that the fasting blood glucose levels [standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.39 to -0.22, P < 0.00001], the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (SMD: -0.68, 95% CI: -0.87 to -0.50], P < 0.00001), and insulin levels (SMD: -0.68, 95% CI: -0.79 to -0.58, P < 0.00001) were significantly lower in patients with PCOS taking antioxidants than those in the placebo group. Further, total cholesterol levels (SMD: -0.38, 95% CI: -0.56 to -0.20, P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (SMD: -0.24, 95% CI: -0.37 to -0.10, P = 0.0008), and very low-density lipoprotein levels (SMD: -0.53, 95% CI: -0.65 to -0.41, P < 0.00001) were lower in patients with PCOS taking antioxidant supplements compared with the placebo group. Total testosterone (TT) level (SMD: -0.78, 95% CI: -1.15 to -0.42, P < 0.0001), dehydroepiandrosterone level (SMD: -0.42, 95% CI: -0.58 to -0.25, P < 0.00001), and mean standard deviation modified Ferriman-Gallway (MF-G scores) (SMD: -0.63, 95% CI: -0.98 to -0.28, P = 0.0004) were lower in patients taking antioxidant supplements. C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (SMD: -0.48, 95% CI: -0.63 to -0.34, P < 0.000001), body mass index [mean difference (MD): -0.27, 95% CI: -0.50 to -0.03, P = 0.03], weight (MD: -0.73, 95% CI: -1.35 to -0.11, P = 0.02), and diastolic blood pressure (MD: -3.78, 95% CI: -6.30 to -1.26, P = 0.003) were significantly lower. Moreover, the levels of sex hormone-binding protein (SMD: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.07-0.38, P = 0.004), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (SMD: 0.11, 95% CI: 0.01-0.20, P = 0.03), total antioxidant capacity (SMD: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.31-0.87, P < 0.0001), and quantitative insulin sensitivity index (SMD: 0.01, 95% CI: 0.01-0.02, P < 0.00001) were higher in patients with PCOS who took antioxidant supplements compared with the placebo group. Antioxidant supplements did not affect other analyzed parameters in these patients, including follicle-stimulating hormone, free androgen index, nitric oxide, glutathione, malondialdehyde, and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusions: Antioxidants are beneficial in treating PCOS. Our study might provide a new treatment strategy for patients with clinical PCOS. We hope that more high-quality studies evaluating the effects of antioxidants on patients with PCOS will be conducted in the future. Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurological disorder, pathologically characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) as well as the formation of Lewy bodies composed mainly of α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregates. It has been documented that abnormal aggregation of α-syn is one of the major causes of developing PD. In the current study, administration of ellagic acid (EA), a polyphenolic compound (10 mg/kg bodyweight), significantly decreased α-syn spreading and preserved dopaminergic neurons in a male C57BL/6 mouse model of PD. Moreover, EA altered the autophagic flux, suggesting the involvement of a restorative mechanism meditated by EA treatment. Our data support that EA could play a major role in the clearing of toxic α-syn from spreading, in addition to the canonical antioxidative role, and thus preventing dopaminergic neuronal death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is one of the most common psychological disorders among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients that characterized as the first symptoms. Ellagic acid is a natural polyphenol that may have neuroprotective properties through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Ellagic acid on circulating levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), interferon-γ (IFN-ƴ), nitric oxide (NO), nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), cortisol, serotonergic system, and indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO) gene expression in MS patients with mild to moderate depressive symptoms. STUDY DESIGN A randomized triple-blind clinical trial. METHODS The eligible patients according to the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into two groups: either 180 mg Ellagic acid (Axenic company) (n = 25) or 180 mg maltodextrin (n = 25) group for 12 weeks. The Ellagic acid supplement were identical to placebo in shape, color and odor. Serum BDNF, NO, Nrf2, cortisol, serotonin, and IFN-ƴ were measured by ELISA kit in the baseline and end of the study. Also, demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, physical activity, food intake, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and expanding disability status scale (EDSS) questionnaires, as well as IDO gene expression were assessed. SPSS software version 24 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Fifty patients were evaluated, and a significant decrease in BDI-II (p = 0.001), IFN-ƴ (p = 0.001), NO (p = 0.004), cortisol (p = 0.015), IDO gene expression (p = 0.001) and as well as increased the level of BDNF (p = 0.006) and serotonin (p = 0.019) was observed among those who received 90 mg Ellagic acid twice a day for 12 weeks versus control group. However, there were no significant differences between groups for Nrf2 levels (p>0.05) at the end of study. CONCLUSION The current study indicates that Ellagic acid intervention has a favorable effect on depression in MS patients. This is achieved by reducing BDI-II scores, as well as levels of NO, cortisol, IFN-ƴ, and IDO gene expression. Furthermore, we found a significant elevation in circulating levels of BDNF and serotonin.

Abstract
High prolactin (PRL) concentration has been shown to induce the apoptosis of ovine ovarian granulosa cells (GCs), but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of apoptosis induced by high PRL concentration in GCs. Trial 1: The optimal concentration of glutathion was determined according to the detected cell proliferation. The results showed that the optimal glutathione concentration was 5 μmol/mL. Trial 2: 500 ng/mL PRL was chosen as the high PRL concentration. The GCs were treated with 0 ng/mL PRL (C group), 500 ng/mL PRL (P group) or 500 ng/mL PRL, and 5 μmol/mL glutathione (P-GSH group). The results indicated that the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex (MRCC) I-V, ATP production, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and thioredoxin peroxidase (TPx) in the C group were higher than those in the P group (p < 0.05), while they were lower than those in the P-GSH group (p < 0.05). Compared to the C group, the P group exhibited elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis (p < 0.05) and increased expression of ATG7 and ATG5 (p < 0.05). However, MRCC I-V, ATP, SOD, A-TOC, TPx, ROS, and apoptosis were decreased after the addition of glutathione (p < 0.05). The knockdown of either L-PRLR or S-PRLR in P group GCs resulted in a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in MRCC I-V, ATP, T-AOC, SOD and TPx, while the overexpression of either receptor showed an opposite trend (p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that high PRL concentrations induce apoptotic cell death in ovine ovarian GCs by downregulating L-PRLR and S-PRLR, activating oxidative stress and autophagic pathways.

Abstract
Tannins are a heterogenous class of polyphenolic natural products with promising cancer chemopreventive and therapeutic potential. Studies undertaken over the last 30 years have demonstrated their capacity to target many cellular pathways and molecules important in the development of cancer. Recently, new mechanisms that might be important in anti-carcinogenic activity, such as inhibition of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, reduction of cancer stem cell creation, and modulation of cancer cells metabolism have been described. Along with the mechanisms underlying the anti-cancer activity of tannins, this review focuses on their possible application as chemosensitizers in adjuvant therapy and countering multidrug resistance. Furthermore, characteristic physicochemical properties of some tannins, particularly tannic acid, are useful in the formation of nanovehicles for anticancer drugs or the isolation of circulating cancer cells. These new potential applications of tannins deserve further studies. Well-designed clinical trials, which are scarce, are needed to assess the therapeutic effects of tannins themselves or as adjuvants in cancer treatment.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine disease that is characterized by oligo-ovulation or anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries observed using ultrasound with high clinical heterogeneity. At present, the etiology of PCOS is not clear but is thought to be related to genetic, metabolic, endocrine and environmental factors. Hyperandrogenism interacts with insulin resistance and overweight/obesity, forming a vicious cycle of mutual promotion and participating in the occurrence and progression of PCOS. Oxidative stress (OS) refers to the imbalance between the oxidation system and antioxidation system in the human body, which is associated with the occurrence and development of various diseases. Recent studies have shown that OS may be closely related to ovulation disorders in PCOS, and antioxidants can improve the oxidative stress state of PCOS. However, previous studies did not examine the effect of the interaction between OS and hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance or overweight/obesity on ovulation disorders in PCOS. This article reviews the interaction between OS and hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance and overweight/obesity; the effects of OS, hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance and overweight/obesity on ovulation disorders in PCOS; and the application of antioxidants in PCOS.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors, usually with a common pathophysiological origin in insulin resistance and abdominal obesity. Considering the reported effects of ellagic acid (EA) on insulin resistance and abdominal obesity, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of EA on the components of MetS, insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion by conducting a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial with 32 volunteers diagnosed with MetS. Sixteen patients were randomly allocated, received 500 mg of EA orally twice a day for 12 weeks, and the other 16 received a placebo. Clinical and laboratory determinations were obtained at baseline and at the end of the study. After EA administration, patients reduced their waist circumference (females: 102.2 ± 4.2 to 99.5 ± 3.2 cm (p < 0.05); males: 99.8 ± 6.7 to 96.0 ± 4.7 cm (p < 0.01)), systolic blood pressure (118.1 ± 10.1 to 113.7 ± 7.8 mmHg (p < 0.01)), diastolic blood pressure (118.1 ± 10.1 to 113.7 ± 7.8 mmHg (p < 0.01)), triglycerides (2.8 ± 1.1 to 2.1 ± 0.7 mmol/L (p < 0.01)), fasting plasma glucose (6.5 ± 0.5 to 5.7 ± 0.6 mmol/L (p < 0.01)), fasting plasma insulin (p < 0.01), and insulin secretion (p < 0.05), with an increase of insulin sensitivity (p < 0.01). In male patients, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased (p < 0.05). In conclusion, EA improved the components of MetS, reduced hyperinsulinemia, and improved insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
Background: Few data are currently available on the treatment of patients with HPV infection. In particular, there is no agreement on the use of antioxidants in these patients. Ellagic acid and annona muricata appear to improve HPV clearance in infected women. However, it is presently unknown whether they could enhance the clearance of HPV infection in infertile male patients. Aim: To evaluate the effects of a commercially available combined compound containing ellagic acid and annona muricata on semen quality in patients with documented papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and on the frequency of HPV DNA detection in seminal fluid after treatment. In addition, anti-sperm antibodies and the percentage of spermatozoa with fragmented DNA were evaluated. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective case-control study including patients attending our center for infertility. Fifty selected patients who were positive for high risk (HR)-HPV with available semen analysis results were consecutively enrolled. Patients were classified into two groups, according to the clinician’s decision to either administer ellagic acid 100 mg and annona muricata 100 mg (combined tablet formulation) for a period of three months (Group A; 25 patients), or to re-evaluate HPV DNA after a period of active surveillance only (protected sexual intercourse) (Group B; 25 patients). Results: Group A patients had a mean age of 31.0 ± 11.0 years, while Group B was 33.0 ± 8.0 years old (p > 0.05). After three months of treatment with ellagic acid and annona muricata, all conventional seminal parameters improved more significantly in Group A than in Group B patients: sperm concentration = 45 mil/mL vs. 20 mil/mL (p < 0.05); sperm progressive motility = 45% vs. 18% (p < 0.05); and normal sperm morphology = 18% vs. 6% (p < 0.05). After the treatment, the frequency of persistence of HPV DNA in the seminal fluid was significantly lower in Group A patients compared to those in Group B (12/25 = 48% vs. 22/25 = 88%; p < 0.05). Finally, after 3 months, Group A showed a significant reduction in anti-sperm antibodies and in the percentage of spermatozoa with fragmented DNA. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate, for the first time, the effects of a commercially available combined compound containing ellagic acid and annona muricata on semen quality in patients with HR-HPV infection, and that this therapy is also associated with a significant reduction in the persistence of HPV DNA in the seminal fluid.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common clinical disease often associated with insulin resistance (IR). The interaction between PCOS and IR will promote the progress of PCOS and the risk of related complications, harm women's physical and mental health, and increase the social and economic burden. Materials and Methods PCOS IR-related works of literature were retrieved through the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) Database and imported into VOSviewer and CiteSpace, respectively, in plain text format to conduct the literature visualization analysis of authors, countries, institutions, highly cited works of literature, and keywords, aiming to reveal the hot spots and trends of PCOS IR fields. Results A total of 7,244 articles were retrieved from 1900 to 2022. Among them, the United States has made the largest contribution. Diamanti-Kandarakis E was the author with the most publications, and the University of Athens was the institution with most publications. Keyword analysis showed that PCOS interacts with IR mainly through sex-hormone binding globulin, luteinizing hormone, insulin-like growth factor, oxidative stress, and other mechanisms. In addition, the complications of PCOS complicated with IR are also the focus of researchers' attention. Conclusions Through bibliometric analysis, this paper obtains the research hotspot and trend of PCOS IR fields, which can provide a reference for subsequent research.

Abstract
Oxidative stress has been implicated in many diseases, including reproductive and pregnancy disorders, from subfertility to maternal vascular disease or preterm labour. There is, however, discrepancy within the standardized markers of oxidative stress in obstetrics and gynaecology in clinical studies. This review aims to present the scope of markers used between 2012 and 2022 to describe oxidative stress with regard to reproduction, pregnancy, and pregnancy-related issues. Despite the abundance of evidence, there is no consensus on the set of standardised markers of oxidative stress which poses a challenge to achieve universal consensus in order to appropriately triangulate the results.

Abstract
Ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, is detected in free form or linked to polyols or sugars, constituting hydrolyzable tannins or ellagitannins in distinct fruits, nuts, and herbs. Today, a considerable number of botanicals and enriched foods containing EA are commercially available as nutraceuticals and used to prevent mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to the excellent neuroprotective capacity of EA. Here, this study aims to provide an overview of the physicochemical properties, source, and pharmacokinetics of EA and to emphasize the importance and mechanisms of EA in the prevention and management of MCI. To date, preclinical studies of EA and its derivatives in various cell lines and animal models have advanced the idea of dietary EA as a feasible agent capable of specifically targeting and improving MCI. The molecular mechanisms of EA and its derivatives to prevent or reduce MCI are mainly through reducing neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, neuronal apoptosis, synaptic dysfunction and loss, and defective mitochondrial functions. Nevertheless, well-designed and correctly large randomized controlled trials in the human population need to be performed to reinforce the scientific facticity of the beneficial effects of EA against MCI. Synchronously, the mechanism of EA against MCI is least provided cynosure and expects more attention from the emerging research community.
