Abstract
Purpose Recent studies imply that psychological factors may actively contribute to the development of asthma. It is generally known that people with asthma frequently suffer from psychological illnesses. This association can make it challenging to reach asthma control. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression and anxiety among Jordanian adults with asthma, in addition to the link between asthma control levels and these psychological disorders. Patients and Methods This cross-sectional study included 175 adults with asthma who visited the tertiary asthma clinic in three Jordanian Governmental hospitals. Sociodemographic data was collected directly from the patients who were assessed for their level of depression and anxiety using a self-administered questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Also, asthma control was assessed using the Asthma Control Test (ACT). The relation between the different sociodemographic variables and clinical data, particularly depression and anxiety and asthma control level, was assessed. Results Among 175 asthmatic patients, 60.57% had poor disease control, 8% had anxiety alone, 11.43% had depression alone, and 53.14% had anxiety plus depression. Poor asthma control was significantly associated with anxiety and depression (p= 0.044) and low levels of education (p=0.001). Further, a lower level of education was also related to higher levels of anxiety and depression. Conclusion Most of the assessed Jordanian patients with asthma had their disease poorly controlled. Anxiety and depression are common among the studied sample of adults with asthma, and they appear to affect the level of disease control, suggesting the possibility that addressing these psychological conditions could enhance asthma control levels.

Abstract
Psychiatric disorders are common in patients with allergic asthma, and they can have a significant impact on their quality of life and disease control. Recent studies have suggested that there may be potential immune-brain communication mechanisms in asthma, which can activate inflammatory responses in different brain areas, leading to structural and functional alterations and behavioral changes. However, the precise mechanisms underlying these alterations remain unclear. In this paper, we comprehensively review the relevant research on asthma-induced brain structural and functional alterations that lead to the initiation and promotion of anxiety. We summarize the possible pathways for peripheral inflammation to affect the brain's structure and function. Our review highlights the importance of addressing neuropsychiatric disorders in the clinical guidelines of asthma, to improve the quality of life of these patients. We suggest that a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying psychiatric comorbidities in asthma could lead to the development of more effective treatments for these patients.

Abstract
In Saudi Arabia, the prevalence of pediatric asthma ranges between 8% and 25%. However, there are no sufficient data regarding severe asthma in childhood in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, a task force has been formed by the Saudi Pediatric Pulmonology Association which is a subsidiary group of the Saudi Thoracic Society and consists of Saudi experts with well-respected academic and clinical backgrounds in the fields of pediatric asthma as well as other respiratory diseases to write a consensus on definitions, phenotypes, and pathophysiology, evaluation, and management. To achieve this, the subject was divided into various sections, each of which was assigned to at least 2 experts. Without a central literature review, the authors searched the literature using their own strategies. To reach an agreement, the entire panel reviewed and voted on proposed findings and recommendations.

Abstract
PURPOSE In asthma, increased severity has been linked to depression assessed as assessed by patient-reported outcomes. However, little is known about predictors of antidepressant use in asthma compared to the background population. METHODS The study consists of 60,534 asthma patients aged 18-45 and a 1:1 age- and sex-matched control group. Using national registries and prescription data, the prevalence of and risk factors for antidepressant use were investigated by logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, workforce and civil status, income- and education-level and comorbidity. Results presented as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS A total of 16% and 22%, respectively, among patients with mild-to-moderate and possible severe asthma redeemed antidepressant drugs, compared to 10% of controls. Antidepressant use was more prevalent amongst patients with high rescue medication use (>600 annual doses) and those with a history of moderate or severe exacerbation(s). Both mild-to-moderate and possible severe asthma were independent risk factors for antidepressant use (OR 1.40 (95% CI 1.35, 1.46) and OR 1.55 (95% CI 1.41, 1.70), respectively). Female sex, age, being divorced or never married, having only primary education or currently being under education, as well as being on welfare/transfer income increased odds of antidepressant use. Completing higher education and having high income were associated with lower odds. CONCLUSION In asthma, antidepressant use is significantly higher than in the background population. Even after adjusting for known risk factors, asthma remains a predictor of antidepressant use, signalling a psychologic burden related to living with asthma.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a chronic disease associated with risk of depression and suicidal events. The present study estimated the frequency of depression, suicidal motivation (SM) and suicidal ideation (SI) and identified clinical and psychosocial factors associated with these outcomes among individuals with asthma. Methods Cross-sectional study of a non-probabilistic sample of 1,358 adults with asthma and controls without asthma. Asthma severity and asthma control were assessed by a physician according to WHO (2009) and GINA (2012) criteria. Depression, SM and SI were screened by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Psychosocial factors were evaluated by a Community Violence Questionnaire, a Social Support Scale, a Stress Perceived Scale and a Resilience Scale. Chi-Square Test, and logistic regression models were performed to evaluate association between variables and outcomes. Results Among all participants, 222 (16.30%) had depression, 331 (24.40%) SM and 73 (5.40%) SI. There were 138 (12.10%) individuals with mild depression and SM, and 14 (1.20%) with mild depression and SI. After adjustment, severe asthma (SA) increased the chance of depression by 53.00% whereas mild to moderate asthma (MMA) increased by eleven-fold the likelihood of SI. Perception of low social support increased the chance of depression (OR 3.59; 95% CI, 2.44-5.28) and low resilience by (OR 2.96; 95% CI, 2.00-4.38); distress increased the odds of SM by 37.00%, and low affective support perception raised the likelihood of SI by (OR 6.82; 95% CI, 1.94-2.90). Conclusions Asthma, whether mild to moderate or severe, increased the chance of depression and SI. It is noteworthy that individuals with mild depression and MMA are at greater risk for SM and SI. Among the psychosocial variables, perception of low social support and low resilience were the variables associated with depression; distress impacted on SM, and the perception of low affective support raised the chance of SI.

Abstract
Se ha identificado que la percepción de la enfermedad es una variable que regula el afrontamiento de la enfermedad y su impacto emocional en pacientes con enfermedades crónicas como el asma. Las intervenciones psicológicas en este padecimiento van dirigidas, principalmente, a mejorar la adaptación a la enfermedad y disminuir sus consecuencias emocionales. Se presenta un estudio de caso sistemático de una mujer con asma, ansiedad y depresión. El propósito de la intervención fue modificar la percepción de enfermedad y disminuir los síntomas de ansiedad y depresión. La evaluación se basó en el Análisis Funcional de la Conducta, el Cuestionario Breve de Percepción de Enfermedad (BIPQ) y la Escala de Ansiedad y Depresión Hospitalaria (HADS). Los resultados se valoraron con el Cambio Clínico Objetivo (CCO) y mostraron una modificación clínicamente significativa en la percepción de enfermedad, específicamente en la percepción de impacto emocional (-100%), en las consecuencias percibidas de esta (-85%) y en su control percibido (100%). Además, decrementó el nivel de ansiedad (-45 %) y depresión (-75%). Se concluye que las intervenciones psicológicas deben de formar parte del tratamiento multidisciplinario en pacientes con enfermedades crónicas para favorecer una mejoría en calidad de vida y minimizar sus repercusiones emocionales

Abstract
Introduction the relationship between asthma control and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult asthmatics is fairly established, but the unique contribution of atopy to this relationship has received less attention. The aim of this study was to quantify the contribution of atopy to this relationship. Methods in a cross-sectional study, we assessed HRQoL using mini-Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ). Asthma control, atopy and lung function were assessed using the Asthma Control Test (ACT), skin prick test and spirometry respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to examine the association between of HRQol and asthma control, atopy and other clinical and demographical factors. Results eighty-two adult asthmatics (59 females), with median age of 44 years and median duration of asthma of 15 years were recruited from a tertiary hospital. Fifty-two (63%) were classified as atopic based on sensitization to at least one aeroallergen. The atopic individuals were younger and had better quality of life in activity domain; however, there was no significant difference between the atopic and non-atopic asthmatics in ACT score (19.0 vs 18.0) p=0.91, total AQLQ score (4.9 vs 4.6) p=0.22. The ACT scores correlated positively with total AQLQ scores [rho= 0.53, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.35, 0.67; p< 0.001]. However, atopy contributed significantly to the emotional domain of HRQoL score, p=0.028. Conclusion we concluded that better asthma control is associated with better quality of life and atopy contributed uniquely to emotional domain in health-related quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The asthma control test (ACT) is commonly used to identify patients with uncontrolled asthma. The goal of this study was to determine whether clinical parameters such as asthma history and medications, exacerbation rate, comorbidities, lung function, and socioeconomic status are risk factors for uncontrolled asthma assessed with the ACT, and to evaluate the psychological status of controlled and uncontrolled asthmatics. METHODS Adult asthmatics (n = 104) were recruited from a single asthma center, Poland. Asthma control was assessed with the ACT, using <20 as the cutoff point for uncontrolled asthma. Data on clinical factors were collected and spirometry was performed. Patients completed the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, General Health Questionnaire, Acceptance of Illness Scale, Life Orientation Test-Revised, and Eysenck's Personality Inventory. RESULTS Asthma was uncontrolled in 42.3% of patients. Asthma exacerbations in the preceding 12 months and high inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) doses were identified as independent risk factors for uncontrolled asthma. Uncontrolled asthmatics had a significantly worse psychological status than controlled asthmatics. The groups did not differ in terms of personality traits, but in the controlled asthma group numerous significant correlations between psychological factors and personality traits were observed. In the uncontrolled asthma group, however, the occurrence of correlations between personality traits and other psychological variables was rarer. CONCLUSIONS The study identified independent risk factors for uncontrolled asthma, namely, exacerbations in the recent 12 months and treatment with high-dose ICS. Uncontrolled asthmatics have a significantly worse psychological status than controlled asthmatics, irrespective of personality traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma exacerbation risk increases with worsening asthma control. Prevailing numerical control tools evaluate only current symptom impairment despite the importance of also assessing risk based on exacerbation history. An easy-to-use questionnaire addressing impairment and risk domains of control is needed. OBJECTIVE To validate a composite asthma control tool that includes impairment and risk assessments (Asthma Impairment and Risk Questionnaire [AIRQ]). METHODS Four-hundred forty-two patients aged ≥12 years with physician-diagnosed asthma who were followed in specialty practices completed 15 impairment and risk questions with dichotomized yes/no responses. Patients spanned all Global Initiative for Asthma severities and were classified as well-controlled, not well-controlled, or very poorly controlled according to a standard of Asthma Control Test (ACT) score plus prior-year exacerbations. Logistic regression analyses identified questions with the greatest predictive validity to discriminate among patients and determine cut points for these 3 classifications. RESULTS The final AIRQ comprises 10 equally weighted yes/no impairment and risk questions. The final 10-item models yielded receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.94 to identify well-controlled versus not well-/very poorly controlled and 0.93 to identify well-/not well-controlled versus very poorly controlled asthma, as reflected by the ACT plus prior-year exacerbations standard. Cut points of 0-1, 2-4, and 5-10 best represented well-, not well-, and very poorly controlled asthma. CONCLUSIONS AIRQ is a rigorously validated composite measure designed to identify adults and adolescents with varying degrees of asthma control. Ongoing investigations will determine test-retest reliability, responsiveness to change, and predictive ability for future exacerbations.

Abstract
Asthma is a common non-communicable disease, often characterized by activity limitation, negative effects on social life and relationships, problems with finding and keeping employment, and poor quality of life. The objective of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature investigating the potential factors impacting quality of life (QoL) in asthma. Electronic searches were carried out on: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science (initial search April 2017 and updated in January 2019). All primary research studies including asthma, psychological or physical health factors, and quality of life were included. Narrative synthesis was used to develop themes among findings in included studies in an attempt to identify variables impacting QoL in asthma. The search retrieved 43 eligible studies that were grouped in three themes: psychological factors (including anxiety and depression, other mental health conditions, illness representations, and emotion regulation), physical health factors (including BMI and chronic physical conditions), and multifactorial aspects, including the interplay of health and psychological factors and asthma. These were found to have a substantial impact on QoL in asthma, both directly and indirectly, by affecting self-management, activity levels and other outcomes. Findings suggest a complex and negative effect of health and psychological factors on QoL in asthma. The experience of living with asthma is multifaceted, and future research and intervention development studies should take this into account, as well as the variety of variables interacting and affecting the person.

Abstract
Objective: To estimate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and health utilities among asthma patients with and without comorbid allergies in a managed care population.Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of patient survey responses and pharmacy claims from the Observational Study of Asthma Control and Outcomes (OSACO). Patients ≥12 years-old with persistent asthma received four identical surveys between April-2011 and December-2012. The presence of allergy was identified by a positive response to a survey question about hay fever/seasonal allergies and ≥1 diagnosis-related ICD-9-CM code(s) for allergic conditions. HRQoL instruments included generic utility (EQ-5D-3L [including VAS]), asthma-specific utility (AQL-5D) and asthma-specific health status (Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire [MiniAQLQ]). Median regression was used for utility scores and Least Squares regression for MiniAQLQ, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and smoking.Results: Of the 2681 asthmatics who completed the first survey in the OSACO study, 971 had comorbid allergies. After adjusting for covariates, asthma patients with comorbid allergies had significantly lower MiniAQLQ scores than patients without allergies (-0.489 [95% CI -0.570, -0.409]; p < 0.01), with the greatest decrement/impairment observed for the environmental stimuli domain (-0.729 [95% CI -0.844, -0.613]; p < 0.01). Utility scores were also statistically significantly lower for asthma patients with comorbid allergies compared to those without allergies (EQ-5D, -0.031 [95% CI -0.047, -0.015]; AQL-5D, -0.036 [95% CI -0.042, -0.029]; p < 0.01 each).Conclusions: The presence of allergies with persistent asthma is associated with a significant deleterious impact on several different measures of HRQoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological variables (anxiety, depression, and coping strategies) and asthma control (assessed from the patient's perspective or from the physician's perspective) affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in asthmatic patients. However, no study has simultaneously evaluated these variables to understand the independent contribution of each one of these factors to HRQoL. OBJECTIVE To determine the impact of anxiety, depression, coping strategies, and asthma control on HRQoL, and to compare the impact of asthma control on HRQoL when it is established by the physician versus when it is considered by the patient. METHODS A total of 373 asthmatics completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Inventory, 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, and St. George Respiratory Questionnaire. Asthma control was measured by the patient with Asthma Control Test and by the physician with the classification asthma control of Global Initiative for Asthma. Demographic and clinical characteristics were also collected. RESULTS Anxiety, depression, and poor patient-rated asthma control status were associated with worse HRQoL in all dimensions (except Mental Health for asthma control). Physician-rated asthma control was related to worse HRQoL in physical generic and specific dimensions. Among coping strategies, only avoidant coping impacted HRQoL in a few dimensions. CONCLUSIONS Anxiety, depression, and asthma control (especially patient-rated asthma control) were important independent predictors of asthma HRQoL, and all of them should therefore be considered in interventions to improve HRQoL in asthmatic patients.

Abstract
Purpose: Based on the possible association between reduced foot dorsiflexion and high risk of falls, the main objective was to determine the ankle and 1º metatarsophalangeal joint (1stMTTP) dorsiflexion range of motion and falls rate in patients with asthma compared to healthy matched-paired controls. Methods: A case-control study was carried out. Eighty participants were recruited and divided into patients with asthma (case group; n=40) and matched-paired healthy participants (control group; n=40). Foot dorsal flexion range of motion (assessed by the Weight-Bearing Lunge Test [WBLT]) and falls rate (evaluated as falls number during the prior year) were considered as the primary outcomes. Indeed, ankle dorsiflexion was measured by a mobile app (º) and a tape measure (cm) as well as 1stMTTP dorsiflexion was determined by and universal goniometer (º). Results: Statistically significant differences (P<.05) showed that patients with asthma presented a greater falls rate than healthy participants and reduced bilateral ankle and 1stMTTP dorsiflexion ranges of motion than healthy participants, except for the left ankle dorsiflexion measured as degrees (P>.05). Conclusions: These study findings showed that a falls rate increase and bilateral foot dorsal flexion limitations of the ankle and 1stMTTP joints are exhibited in patients who suffer from asthma.

Abstract
Background: Based on changes in lung function and musculoskeletal disorders in patients with asthma, this study aimed to compare the tarsal tunnel and fibular bone pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) of patients with asthma and healthy matched-paired controls. Methods: A case-control study was performed. One hundred participants were recruited: 50 asthma patients and 50 healthy matched-paired controls. Bilaterally, tarsal tunnel and fibula bone PPTs were registered. Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) were shown bilaterally for tarsal tunnel PPT. With the exception of fibula PPT (p > 0.05), asthma patients presented less tarsal tunnel PPT than healthy participants. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were shown for two linear regression prediction models of the right (R2 = 0.279) and left (R2 = 0.249) tarsal tunnels PPTs as dependent variables, and based on sex, group, contralateral tarsal tunnel PPT and ipsilateral fibula PPT as independent variables. Conclusions: The study findings showed that a bilateral tarsal tunnel mechanosensitivity increase is exhibited in patients diagnosed with asthma. The presence of asthma may bilaterally predict the PPT of tarsal tunnel. These findings may suggest the presence of central sensitization in asthma patients, which could clinically predispose them to musculoskeletal disorders, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is a common chronic illness worldwide. Asthmatic children are forced to alter their way of living to avoid its complications or exacerbations, which negatively affects their psychological and social well-being. High prevalence of behavioral and emotional difficulties was noticed among children with asthma. METHODS Cross-sectional study that was conducted over 8 months involving asthmatic children within the ages of 7-17 years presenting to two governmental hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Three questionnaires were used: asthma control test, the strengths and difficulties questionnaire, and the pediatrics asthma quality of life questionnaire. Using SPSS, Pearson's chi-square and independent sample t-tests were used to find associations. RESULTS Among the 106 respondents, 84% of the sample had poor asthma control. Significantly poorer quality of life was observed in children with uncontrolled asthma (p = <0.001). Children with controlled and uncontrolled asthma were equally affected psychosocially with no relation between asthma control and their psychosocial well-being (p = 0.58). CONCLUSION The majority of asthmatic children were uncontrolled with poor quality of life. This study recommends that the psychosocial well-being should be assessed during clinic visits for a better holistic approach and effective improvement of outcome. Further researches are needed to study the psychological effect of asthma.

Abstract
House dust mite (HDM) is the most common cause of respiratory allergy worldwide. The impact of HDM allergy is influenced by a number of factors, including local climate. We investigated such issue in Italy, using a real-life setting, including outpatients visited at allergy clinics. In 9143 patients (7873 adults and 1270 children) who were evaluated in 15 allergy clinics, investigating as well the rate of prescription of allergen immunotherapy. The present study confirms that Mediterranean climate is associated with a higher prevalence of mite allergy than continental climate. This significant difference may have an impact on allergen immunotherapy prescription, which should be more common in areas with higher prevalence of HDM allergy.

Abstract
Background Asthma is the most common potentially serious medical complication in pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between maternal asthma and a spectrum of adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes. Methods Events during pregnancy and birth outcome were evaluated in 34 asthmatic as well as 1569 non-asthmatic pregnant women who were enrolled in a prospective cohort study undertaken at the antenatal clinics of Mobini Hospital in Iran. The women were interviewed and classified according to clinical severity and asthma control as per GINA guidelines. Information on asthma symptoms was collected by a questionnaire as well as by spirometry and physical examination. All subjects were followed until delivery, and postpartum charts were reviewed to assess neonatal and maternal outcomes. Eosinophil cells counts were obtained and total IgE was measured by ELISA. Results were assessed by multivariate logistic regression adjusting for maternal age and parity, and for birth outcomes, for gestational diabetes, and hypertension/pre-eclampsia. Results The well-known relationship between family history of asthma and asthma in pregnancy was again supported (p < 0.001). Women with asthma had more bleeding events 3 weeks or more before delivery (OR 3.30, 95% CI 1.41–7.26), more often placenta problems (OR 6.86, 95% CI 1.42–33.02), and gestational diabetes mellitus (OR 3.82, 95% CI 1.06–13.75). No significant differences between asthmatic and non-asthmatic mothers regarding duration of gestation, birthweight, low Apgar scores, or neonatal respiratory difficulties were found. Total IgE antibody levels and eosinophil counts did not differ by asthma control and severity. Conclusions Asthma in pregnancy poses some risk for pregnancy complications and adverse perinatal outcomes. Managing asthma effectively throughout pregnancy could benefit women and their babies and help to reduce the health burden associated with asthma during pregnancy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is associated with sleep disorders. However, although sleep disturbance is prevalent in people with asthma, an insufficient number of studies have investigated the relationship between asthma and RLS. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the extent of the presence of RLS, and the factors related to RLS, in people with asthma. METHODS A total of 84 people with asthma and 51 healthy volunteers were enrolled. The diagnosis of RLS was made according to the criteria determined by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group, and the Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety scales were used to assess both groups. The Asthma Control Test™(ACT) was carried out to determine asthma control status. RESULTS RLS was detected in 27 (32.1%) of the asthma group and in 8 (15.7%) of the control group. The frequency of RLS was significantly higher in the asthma group than in the control group (P = .034). Although no significant relationship was observed between the presence of RLS and the use of an inhaled steroid, use of a β2 agonist and age; a significant relationship was found between the presence of RLS and, ACT score, symptoms of depression and anxiety and gender (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS RLS was more frequent in people with asthma than in healthy individuals, and as asthma control decreased, frequency of RLS increased. It was concluded that it would be useful to evaluate people with asthma, particularly those with symptoms of depression and anxiety, with regard to RLS in order to address, and ultimately improve, their quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Among the chronically ill there is a tendency for non-compliance with medical recommendations, which is often due to low satisfaction with the offered treatment. Satisfaction with Asthma Treatment Questionnaire (SATQ) is a questionnaire for measuring satisfaction with the inhalation treatment of asthma in patients of more than 18 years of age. SATQ is a standardized tool that has not been previously used in Poland. SATQ consists of 4 domains: efficiency, ease of use, the burdening with asthma treatment and side effects and concerns. AIM To validate the Polish language version of SATQ questionnaire and an overall verification of the usefulness of the tool relative to trials from clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS The degree of difficulty and comprehension of the questions and the reliability and validity of the Polish version of the questionnaire was determined in 67 patients with asthma (mean age: 45.8 ±14.3 years (range maximum - at least 18-65 years). The vast majority of patients in the study group have used the inhalers for more than 1 year and were educated in the field of aerosols management. The resulting scores are calculated by adding up the scores for each question and dividing by the number of questions. The reliability of the questionnaire design was verified using the Spearman rank correlation coefficients between elements and ranges between band assessments and evaluations and overall assessment of quality and patient satisfaction with treatment. Internal consistency and reliability of the tool was assessed using Cronbach's α. The values of Cronbach's α were evaluated with respect to the threshold value of 0.70. RESULTS SATQ questionnaire was understandable and easy to fill out for all subjects. The filling time of SATQ was designed as to be within 5-10 min. Cronbach's α was reached on all scales, demonstrating the reliability of the analyzed scale and lack of redundancy. CONCLUSIONS The Polish version of SATQ questionnaire meets the basic psychometric criteria and can be used to assess satisfaction with the inhalation treatment of asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aim to investigate the detailed associations between allergic diseases with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) among children. METHODS Clinical information from 2,896 children enrolled in the Taiwan Children Health Study was obtained for analyses. Allergic diseases, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis, have been evaluated based on the questions adjusted from International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. The Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham questionnaire was used to assess symptoms of ADHD and ODD. Symptoms of depression, stress, and poor sleep quality were evaluated as the interactive risk factors. RESULTS Children having symptoms of allergic diseases within the past 1 y were associated with having all dimensions of symptoms of ADHD and ODD. Children with ever having a physician-diagnosed atopic dermatitis were associated with inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms of ADHD. Ever diagnosed asthma was associated with ADHD and ODD. Ever diagnosed allergic rhinitis was associated with inattentive and combined symptoms of ADHD and ODD. CONCLUSION Children with allergic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis, were associated with exhibiting ADHD and ODD.

Abstract
Asthmatic patients are known to have a higher risk of anxiety and depression. In the present study, we aimed to explore the association of serotonin transporter (5-HTT), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neuropeptide S receptor 1 (NPSR1) gene polymorphisms with anxiety and depression in asthmatic patients. This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 143 asthmatic patients and 175 healthy volunteers. Of the asthmatic patients, 49 suffered from anxiety and 12 exhibited signs of depression. Patients with a lower level of education were more prone to depression. Both anxiety and depression were associated with poor asthma control as evaluated by the Asthma Control Test (ACT) score. The association of single nucleotide polymorphisms of BDNF, NPSR1 and 5-HTT with anxiety and depression in asthamtic patients was evaluated. The distribution of 5-HTT gene polymorphisms in the healthy group, the group with asthma but without anxiety, and the group with asthma and anxiety had significant differences. Females with asthma and anxiety were more prone to BDNF polymorphism. Also, BDNF gene distribution exhibited significant differences among those in the healthy group, the group with asthma but no depression, and the group with asthma and depression; however, NPSR1 gene distribution did not vary greatly between the groups. The anxiety score was significantly affected by the interaction between 5-HTT (LL, S+) and BDNF (A+, GG) (H=5.99, P=0.015). The depression score was significantly affected by the interaction between BDNF (A+, GG) and NPSR1 (AA, T+). We noted that both anxiety and depression led to poor asthma control. The interaction between 5-HTT (LL) and BDNF (A+) increased the risk of anxiety, and the interaction between BDNF (A+, GG) and NPSR1 (AA, T+) increased the risk of depression in asthmatic patients.

Abstract
Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is the only treatment of IgE-mediated allergies so far that has a sustained effect on clinical symptoms and can modify the course of the disease. It is an allergen-specific treatment and therefore requires the correct identification of the disease-causing allergens. Furthermore, AIT is a time-consuming treatment for which the efficacy is dependent on several factors. Therefore, diagnostic tests and biomarkers are needed that facilitate (1) selection of the correct allergens according to the patient's individual sensitization profile and (2) to monitor the effects of AIT. This can provide support for the decision to continue, modify, or discontinue vaccination. One significant mechanism of action of AIT is the induction of allergen-specific antibodies that compete with IgE for the binding to allergen molecules, hence referred to as blocking antibodies. It was shown in several studies that the induction of blocking antibodies by AIT, and their specificity can be measured by allergen microarrays. Inhibition of allergen-specific IgE binding by blocking antibodies can also be determined by microarrays and is associated with changes in clinical parameters or other in vivo and in vitro assays demonstrating efficacy of AIT. Furthermore, allergen microarrays allow determination of IgE sensitizations towards a comprehensive set of allergen molecules and therefore are well suited for identifying the disease-causing allergens for correct prescription of AIT. Thus, diagnostic tests based on microarrayed allergens can be useful in determining the correct prescription of AIT and can be used to monitor efficacy of AIT.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asthma is a highly prevalent disease that can affect the quality of life (QoL). The objective of this study is to determine the QoL in patients with asthma and its relationship with different factors in a Primary Care centre. MATERIAL AND METHODS A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in an urban health centre. The study included a total of 243 patients between 17 to 70 years who had a diagnosis of asthma in their medical records. The QoL was measured using the Spanish version of the Mini-Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, with age, sex, smoking, anxiety, depression, severity and control of asthma as associated variables. RESULTS The mean age was 44.5 years and 71.2% were women. More than half (54.3%) had intermittent asthma, and 45.7% persistent asthma. The overall score in the Mini-Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire was 5.4 out of 7. The scores by dimensions were: symptoms 5.4; limitation of activities 5.8; emotional function 5.7, and environmental stimuli 4.7. The variables with a worse QoL score that remained statistically significant (P<.05) in the multivariate analysis were poor control of asthma (in all dimensions), history of depression (in all except environmental stimuli), educated to less than secondary level (symptoms and emotional function), and patients admitted to hospital in the past 3 years (symptoms) and who used long-term beta-adrenergics (emotional function). CONCLUSIONS Patients with intermittent, mild and moderate asthma have a good QoL. Poor control of the asthma and a history of depression negatively affect the QoL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Asthma-related quality of life has previously been shown to be associated with asthma control. The aims of the present study were to further analyze this correlation, identify other variables with impact on asthma-related quality of life and investigate the covariance among these variables. METHODS Information was retrieved from a cohort of 369 patients, aged 12-35, with physician-diagnosed asthma requiring anti-inflammatory treatment for at least 3 months per year. Questionnaire data [including the mini-Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (mAQLQ), asthma control test (ACT) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)], quality of sleep, lung function data and blood samples were analyzed. Linear regression models with the mAQLQ score as the dependent scalar variable were calculated. RESULTS ACT was the single variable that had the highest explanatory value for the mAQLQ score (51.5%). High explanatory power was also observed for anxiety and depression (17.0%) and insomnia (14.1%). The population was divided into groups depending on the presence of anxiety and depression, uncontrolled asthma and insomnia. The group that reported none of these conditions had the highest mean mAQLQ score (6.3 units), whereas the group reporting all of these conditions had the lowest mAQLQ score (3.8 units). CONCLUSIONS The ACT score was the single most important variable in predicting asthma-related quality of life. Combining the ACT score with the data on insomnia, anxiety and depression showed considerable additive effects of the conditions. Hence, we recommend the routine use of the ACT and careful attention to symptoms of insomnia, anxiety or depression in the clinical evaluation of asthma-related quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to determine the relationship of childhood asthma with mental health and developmental indicators in low-income families. METHODS Parents/guardians of approximately 400 children, aged 2-14 years, were recruited from a charity hospital serving low income neighborhoods in the outskirts of Karachi, Pakistan. Mothers of children were interviewed in their local language by a trained nurse. Eight self-reported comorbidities were grouped into two constructs based on factor analysis and conveniently labeled as mental health (anxiety, attention and behavioral problems) and developmental problems (learning, developmental delay, hearing impairment, sleep and speech problems). Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression, adjusted for age, sex, presence of older siblings, number of people in the household, child birth weight, presence of mold, and family history of asthma or hay fever. RESULTS Children with asthma had 18 times greater odds of mental health problems (adjusted OR = 18.0, 95% CI: 9.2, 35.1) as compared to children without asthma. The odds of developmental problems were more than 14 times greater for children with asthma (adjusted OR = 14.3, 95% CI: 7.8, 26.1) as compared to children without asthma. CONCLUSIONS This study found mental and developmental adverse consequences of childhood asthma in low-income families. Identifying and treating asthma at an early age could reduce the burden of comorbidities in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety and depression may frequently affect patients with asthma. However, the findings of several studies are partially conflicting and conducted in selected cohorts. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of anxiety and depression in a group of outpatients with asthma. METHODS This cross-sectional, real-life study included 263 patients (109 males; mean age, 39.2 years) with asthma. Clinical examination, lung function, fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurement, Asthma Control Test (ACT) score, asthma control grade, perception of symptoms by visual analog scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaires were evaluated. RESULTS Globally, 97 patients (36.9%) had anxiety, and 29 (11%) had depression. Of these patients, 71 had combined anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression were associated with poor asthma control (P =.007 and .02, respectively). Patients with depression had higher body mass indexes (P =.002). Anxiety and depression were associated with lower ACT scores (P < .001 for both). The scores on the anxiety and depression subscales of HADS were moderately related (r = 0.57). CONCLUSIONS The present real-life study indicates that anxiety and depression are common and relevant comorbidities in asthmatic outpatients and are associated with uncontrolled asthma and lower ACT scores. Thus, assessment of comorbid mental disorders should be performed in common practice.
