Diagnostic Reference Levels based on clinical indications in computed tomography: a literature review

Proposed Diagnostic Reference Levels in the Missouri/Southern Illinois Region Associated with Cone-beam Computed Tomography Use in Endodontics

INTRODUCTION

Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are intended to improve patient safety and ensure that patient ionizing radiation doses are as low as reasonably achievable. The purpose of this dosimetry study was to establish regional DRL levels for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging for specialty endodontics. Another aim was to compare phantom-measured ionizing radiation dose index 1 (DI1) index doses to the manufacturer-provided dose area product (DAP) radiation output values for each of the CBCT machines studied, to ascertain their degree of correlation. DAP refers to the dose area product, a measure of radiation dose monitoring which represents the dose within the beam times the area within the beam at that position.

METHODS

A thimble ionization chamber and polymethyl methacrylate phantom were used to obtain DI1 values using the SEDENTEXTCT method from 21 different CBCT units. DRLs were calculated based on the 75th percentile (third quartile) of the median output values.

RESULTS

The proposed DRL from the CBCT units surveyed has a DAP value of 838 mGy cm2 and a DI1 value of 3.924 mGy. DAP versus DI1 values of 500.6 mGy cm2 versus 2.006 mGy, and 838 mGy cm2 versus 3.906 mGy represented the third quartile of the median values for the 4-cm × 4-cm and 5-cm × 5-cm field of views (FOVs), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The DI1 and DAP values strongly correlated when 3 outlier CBCT machines (J Morita Veraview X800) using a novel 360° (full rotation) acquisition mode were excluded. The importance of selectable exposure parameters as directly related to ionizing radiation output is illustrated among the CBCT units surveyed. Although the actual FOV that is selected is ultimately dictated by the specific clinical requirements, a 4-cm × 4-cm FOV is recommended for specialist endodontics practice, whenever clinically practical, based on the decreased ionizing radiation output, as compared to that from a 5-cm × 5-cm FOV.

Radiation doses and diagnostic reference levels for common CT scans in adults in Northwest region of Iran

This study aims to estimate organ dose and cancer risks, establish region-specific diagnostic reference levels (DRLs), and determine achievable doses (ADs) for common CT procedures in adults in the northwest of Iran. Effective and organ doses were estimated using VirtualDoseCT software in a sample of 480 adult patients who underwent head, sinus, chest, and abdomen-pelvis (AP) CT scans. The guidelines provided by the BEIR VII report were utilized to estimate cancer risks. Effective and organ doses for specific procedures were determined, with the highest mean organ dose being observed in the brain during head CT examinations, with a value of 54.02 mGy. It was observed that the lungs in chest examinations and the colon in AP examinations had the highest risk of cancer, with rates of 30.72 and 21.37 per 100,000 persons, respectively. Higher cancer risk values were generally exhibited by females compared to males. The DRLs for common CT examinations were established as follows: Head CT (CTDIvol 41 mGy, DLP 760 mGy cm), Sinus CT (CTDIvol 16 mGy, DLP 261 mGy cm), Chest CT (CTDIvol 8 mGy, DLP 287 mGy cm), and AP CT (CTDIvol 9 mGy, DLP 508 mGy cm). Significant variations in dose distribution among facilities were identified, indicating the need for optimization. The study highlights the importance of minimizing radiation exposure to critical organs and promoting patient safety in CT examinations. The establishment of region-specific DRLs and ADs can help optimize radiation doses and reduce cancer risks for patients.

Establishment of local diagnostic reference levels for computed tomography with cloud-based automated dose-tracking software in Türkiye

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to establish local diagnostic reference levels (LDRLs) for computed tomography (CT) procedures using cloud-based automated dose-tracking software.

METHODS

The study includes the dose data obtained from a total of 104,272 examinations performed on adult patients (>18 years) using 8 CT scanners over 12 months. The protocols included in our study were as follows: head CT without contrast, cervical spine CT without contrast, neck CT with contrast, chest CT without contrast, abdomen-pelvis CT without contrast, lumbar spine CT without contrast, high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest, and coronary CT angiography (CTA). Dose data were collected using cloud-based automatic dose-tracking software. The 75th percentiles of the distributions of the median volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) values were used to determine the LDRLs for each protocol. The LDRLs were compared with national DRLs (NDRLs) and DRLs set in other countries. Inter-CT scanner variability, which is a measure of how well clinical practices are standardized, was determined for each protocol. Median values for each protocol were compared with the LDRLs for dose optimization in each CT scanner.

RESULTS

The LDRLs (for DLP and CTDIvol, respectively) were 839 mGy.cm and 41.2 mGy for head CT without contrast, 530.6 mGy.cm and 19.8 mGy for cervical spine CT without contrast, 431.9 mGy.cm and 15.5 mGy for neck CT with contrast, 364.8 mGy.cm and 9.3 mGy for chest CT without contrast, 588.9 mGy. cm and 11.2 mGy for abdomen-pelvis CT without contrast, 713 mGy.cm and 24.3 mGy for lumbar spine CT without contrast, 326 mGy.cm and 9.5 mGy for HRCT, and 642.3 mGy.cm and 33.4 mGy for coronary CTA. The LDRLs were comparable to or lower than NDRLs and DRLs set in other countries for most protocols. The comparisons revealed the need for immediate initiation of an optimization process for CT protocols with higher dose distributions. Furthermore, protocols with high inter-CT scanner variability revealed the need for standardization.

CONCLUSION

There is a need to update the NDRLs for CT protocols in Turkey. Until new NDRLs are established, local institutions in Turkey can initiate the optimization process by comparing their dose distributions to the LDRLs established in our study. Automated dose-tracking software can play an important role in establishing DRLs by facilitating the collection and analysis of large datasets.

Optimization of CT pulmonary angiography for pulmonary embolism using task-based image quality assessment and diagnostic reference levels: A multicentric study

PURPOSE

To establish size-specific diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for pulmonary embolism (PE) based on patient CT examinations performed on 74 CT devices. To assess task-based image quality (IQ) for each device and to investigate the variability of dose and IQ across different CTs. To propose a dose/IQ optimization.

METHODS

1051 CT pulmonary angiography dose data were collected. DRLs were calculated as the 75th percentile of CT dose index (CTDI) for two patient categories based on the thoracic perimeters. IQ was assessed with two thoracic phantom sizes using local acquisition parameters and three other dose levels. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of a 2 mm low perfused vessel was assessed with a non-prewhitening with eye-filter model observer. The optimal IQ-dose point was mathematically assessed from the relationship between IQ and dose.

RESULTS

The DRLs of CTDIvol were 6.4 mGy and 10 mGy for the two patient categories. 75th percentiles of phantom CTDIvol were 6.3 mGy and 10 mGy for the two phantom sizes with inter-quartile AUC values of 0.047 and 0.066, respectively. After the optimization, 75th percentiles of phantom CTDIvol decreased to 5.9 mGy and 7.55 mGy and the interquartile AUC values were reduced to 0.025 and 0.057 for the two phantom sizes.

CONCLUSION

DRLs for PE were proposed as a function of patient thoracic perimeters. This study highlights the variability in terms of dose and IQ. An optimization process can be started individually and lead to a harmonization of practice throughout multiple CT sites.

Advanced Computational Methods for Radiation Dose Optimization in CT

BACKGROUND

In planning radiotherapy treatments, computed tomography (CT) has become a crucial tool. CT scans involve exposure to ionizing radiation, which can increase the risk of cancer and other adverse health effects in patients. Ionizing radiation doses for medical exposure must be kept "As Low As Reasonably Achievable". Very few articles on guidelines for radiotherapy-computed tomography scans are available. This paper reviews the current literature on radiation dose optimization based on the effective dose and diagnostic reference level (DRL) for head, neck, and pelvic CT procedures used in radiation therapy planning. This paper explores the strategies used to optimize radiation doses, and high-quality images for diagnosis and treatment planning.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 patients with head, neck, and pelvic region cancer in our institution. The DRL, effective dose, volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol), and dose-length product (DLP) for the present and optimized protocol were calculated. DRLs were proposed for the DLP using the 75th percentile of the distribution. The DLP is a measure of the radiation dose received by a patient during a CT scan and is calculated by multiplying the CT dose index (CTDI) by the scan length. To calculate a DRL from a DLP, a large dataset of DLP values obtained from a specific imaging procedure must be collected and can be used to determine the median or 75th-percentile DLP value for each imaging procedure.

RESULTS

Significant variations were found in the DLP, CTDIvol, and effective dose when we compared both the standard protocol and the optimized protocol. Also, the optimized protocol was compared with other diagnostic and radiotherapy CT scan studies conducted by other centers. As a result, we found that our institution's DRL was significantly low. The optimized dose protocol showed a reduction in the CTDIvol (70% and 63%), DLP (60% and 61%), and effective dose (67% and 62%) for both head, neck, and pelvic scans.

CONCLUSIONS

Optimized protocol DRLs were proposed for comparison purposes.

Establishing Protocol-based Dose Metrics for Common Abdomen and Pelvis Computed Tomography Protocols

BACKGROUND AND AIM

The majority of the existing diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) that have been established for computed tomography (CT) are based on various anatomical locations, such as the head, chest, abdomen, etc. However, DRLs are initiated to improve radiation protection by conducting a comparison of similar examinations with similar objectives. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of establishing dose baselines based on common CT protocols for patients who underwent enhanced CT abdomen and pelvis exams.

METHODS

Dose length product total (tDLPs), volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol), size-specific dose estimate (SSDE), effective dose (E), and scan acquisition parameters for a total of 216 adult patients, who underwent an enhanced CT abdomen and pelvis exams over a one-year period, were obtained and retrospectively analyzed. Spearman coefficient and one-way ANOVA tests were used to check significant differences between dose metrics and the different CT protocols.

RESULTS

The data exhibited 9 different CT protocols to acquire an enhanced CT abdomen and pelvis exam at our institute. Out of these, 4 were found more common, i.e., CT protocols were acquired for a minimum of 10 cases. Triphasic liver demonstrated the highest mean and median tDLPs across all 4 CT protocols. Triphasic liver protocol registered the highest E followed by gastric sleeve protocol with a mean of 28.7 and 24.7 mSv, respectively. Significant differences (p < 0.0001) were found between the tDLPs of anatomical location and the CT protocol.

CONCLUSION

Evidently, wide variability exists across CT dose indices and patient dose metrics relying on anatomical-based dose baseline, i.e., DRLs. Patient dose optimizations require establishing dose baselines based on CT protocols rather than the anatomical location.

Radiation exposure during CT procedures in Tanzania

The aim of this study was to evaluate optimisation status during common computed tomography (CT) procedures by determining values of volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol) and dose-length product (DLP) per examination. Patient and exposure data were collected from the CT console during various CT procedures. The results show that variations in CTDIvol and DLP values were mainly because of differences in the techniques used. The 75th percentile values were set as the third quartile of the median CTDIvol or DLP values for all hospitals. These values of 40.9, 9.0, 9.4 and 16.2 mGy for CTDIvol were determined for head, high-resolution chest, abdomen-pelvis and lumbar spine, respectively. The corresponding DLP values for the same sequence of CT procedures were 900, 360, 487 and 721 mGy.cm, respectively. The updated results provide a basis for optimising the procedures of CT in this country.

Establishing national clinical diagnostic reference levels and achievable doses for CT examinations in Brazil: A prospective study

PURPOSE

Diagnostic reference levels (DRL) and achievable doses (AD) are important tools for radiation dose optimization. Therefore, a prospective study was performed which aimed to establish a multi-parametric, clinical indication based - DRL(DRLCI) and clinical indication - AD (ADCI) for adult CT in Brazil.

METHODS

The prospective study included 4787 patients (50 ± 18 years old; male:female 2041:2746) at 13 Brazilian sites that have been submitted to head, paranasal sinus, cervical spine, chest, or abdomen-pelvis CT between January and October 2021 for 13 clinical indications. The sites provided the following information: patient age, gender, weight, height, body mass index[BMI], clinical indications, scanner information(vendor, model, detector configuration), scan parameters (number of scan phases, kV, mA, pitch) and dose-related quantities (CT dose index volume- CTDIvol, dose length product- DLP). Median(AD) and 75th(DRL) percentile CTDIvol and DLP values were estimated for each body region and clinical indications. Non-normal data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test.

RESULTS

In majority of Brazilian sites, body region and clinical indications based DRLs were at or lower than the corresponding DRLs in the US and higher than Europe. Although radiation doses varied significantly for patients in different body mass index groups (p < 0.001), within each body region, there were no differences in radiation doses for different clinical indications (p > 0.1). Radiation doses for 7/13 clinical indications were higher using iterative reconstruction technique than for the filtered back projection.

CONCLUSIONS

There was substantial variation in Brazil DRLCI across different institutions with higher doses compared to the European standards. There was also a lack of clinical indication-based protocol and dose optimization based on different clinical indications for the same body region.

Size based dependence of patient dose metrics, and image quality metrics for clinical indicator-based imaging protocols in abdominal CT procedures

INTRODUCTION

Diagnostic reference level (DRL) values for computed tomography (CT) based on clinical indication are warranted since imaging protocols are indication-dependent. This study proposes clinical DRL values using the CT dose metrics and five patient size-related parameters while considering image quality.

METHODS

The volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol), dose-length product (DLP) and five size-related parameters of size-specific dose estimates (SSDE), namely the anterior-posterior (AP) dimension, lateral (LAT) dimension, sum dimension, effective diameter, and the body mass index (BMI), were used to calculate DRL values for CT chest-abdomen-pelvis (CAP) and abdomen-pelvis (AbP) protocols. DRL values of the clinical indications for cancer, urinary system stones and other pathologies were assessed based on the BMI classifications using the median and 75th percentile. An image subtraction algorithm was used to assess the image quality metrics (IQM) of the CT images.

RESULTS

The 75th percentile for SSDEAP dimension for CAP cancer was 19.7, 14.9 and 12.7 mGy at Hospitals A, C and E, respectively. The median DLP for other AbP pathologies was 556.3, 1452.0 and 1960.7 mGy.cm for normal weight, overweight and obese patients, respectively, at Hospital A. The image quality varied among BMI classifications for different clinically indicated examinations. Although the dose increased with BMI, the image quality index was consistent because automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) was used.

CONCLUSION

DRL values are influenced by patient size-related parameters and the clinical indication protocols, while the image quality index is independent of the BMI.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Size-related clinical DRL values and image quality index can be used to monitor and optimise dose and image quality. Acquisition parameters and image quality indexes should be investigated and adjusted when unusually high DRL values are noted.

A retrospective survey to establish institutional diagnostic reference levels for CT urography examinations based on clinical indications: preliminary results

Objective. To establish institutional diagnostic reference levels (IDRLs) based on clinical indications (CIs) for three- and four-phase computed tomography urography (CTU).Methods. Volumetric computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol), dose-length product (DLP), patients' demographics, selected CIs like lithiasis, cancer, and other diseases, and protocols' parameters were retrospectively recorded for 198 CTUs conducted on a Toshiba Aquilion Prime 80 scanner. Patients were categorised based on CIs and number of phases. These groups' 75th percentiles of CTDIvoland DLP were proposed as IDRLs. The mean, median and IDRLs were compared with previously published values.Results. For the three-phase protocol, the CTDIvol(mGy) and DLP (mGy.cm) were 22.7/992 for the whole group, 23.4/992 for lithiasis, 22.8/1037 for cancer, and 21.2/981 for other diseases. The corresponding CTDIvol(mGy) and DLP (mGy.cm) values for the four-phase protocol were 28.6/1172, 30.6/1203, 27.3/1077, and 28.7/1252, respectively. A significant difference was found in CTDIvoland DLP between the two protocols, among the phases of three-phase (except cancer) and four-phase protocols (except DLP for other diseases), and in DLP between the second and third phases (except for cancer group). The results are comparable or lower than most studies published in the last decade.Conclusions. The CT technologist must be aware of the critical dose dependence on the scan length and the applied exposure parameters for each phase, according to the patient's clinical background and the corresponding imaging anatomy, which must have been properly targeted by the competent radiologist. When clinically feasible, restricting the number of phases to three instead of four could remarkably reduce the patient's radiation dose. CI-based IDRLs will serve as a baseline for comparison with CTU practice in other hospitals and could contribute to national DRL establishment. The awareness and knowledge of dose levels during CTU will prompt optimisation strategies in CT facilities.

Virtual monochromatic images of dual-energy CT as an alternative to single-energy CT: performance comparison using a detectability index for different acquisition techniques

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the performance of virtual monochromatic (VM) images with the same dose and iodine contrast as those for single-energy (SE) images using five dual-energy (DE) scanners with DE techniques: two generations of fast kV switching (FKS), two generations of dual source (DS), and one split filter (SF).

METHODS

A water-bath phantom with a diameter of 300 mm, which contains one rod-shaped phantom made of a material equivalent to soft-tissue and two rod-shaped phantoms made of diluted iodine (2 and 12 mg/mL), was scanned using both SE (120, 100, and 80 kV) and DE techniques with the same CT dose index in each scanner. The VM energy at which the CT number of the iodine rod is closest to that of each SE tube voltage was determined as the equivalent energy (Eeq). A detectability index (d') was calculated from the noise power spectrum, the task transfer functions, and a task function corresponding to each rod. The percentage of the d' value of the VM image to that of the corresponding SE image was calculated for performance comparison.

RESULTS

The average percentages of d' of FKS1, FKS2, DS1, DS2, and SF were 84.6%, 96.2%, 94.3%, 107%, and 104% for 120 kV-Eeq; 75.9%, 91.2%, 88.2%, 99.2%, and 82.6% for 100 kV-Eeq; 71.6%, 88.9%, 82.6%, 85.2%, and 62.3% for 80 kV-Eeq, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The performance of VM images was on the whole inferior to that of SE images especially at low equivalent energy levels, depending on the DE techniques and their generations.

KEY POINTS

• This study evaluated the performance of VM images with the same dose and iodine contrast as those for SE images using five DE scanners. • The performance of VM images varied with the DE techniques and their generations and was mostly inferior at low equivalent energy levels. • The results highlight the importance of distribution of available dose over the two energy levels and spectral separation for the performance improvement of VM images.

Investigating CT head diagnostic reference levels based on indication-based protocols - a single site study

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to provide clinically-relevant insights into establishing CT DRLs based on indication-based protocols in Ireland, focusing on CT head examinations performed at a neurology centre of excellence hospital.

METHODS

Dose data were collected retrospectively. Typical values for six CT head indication-based protocols were established using a sample size of 50 patients for each protocol. Typical values for each protocol were set as the median of the distribution curve. Dose distributions for each protocol were calculated and compared using non-parametric median test (k-samples) to ascertain significant dose differences between the typical values.

RESULTS

Most typical values pairings showed significant differences (p < 0.001) except between stroke/non-vascular brain, stroke/acute brain, and acute brain/non-vascular brain pairings. This was expected due to similar scan parameters. The typical value for stroke (3-phases angiogram) was 52% lower than the typical value for stroke. Dose levels of the male populations recorded were higher than female populations for all protocols. Statistical comparison showed significant differences for dose quantities and/or scan length between both genders in five protocols.

CONCLUSION

Proposed values for DLP were up to 63% and 69% lower than the EU and Irish national DRLs respectively. Establishment of CT stroke DRLs should be based on the scan performed instead of number of scan acquisitions. Lastly, gender-based CT DRLs for specific protocols within the head region require further investigation.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

With increasing CT examinations worldwide, radiation dose optimisation is key. The value of indication based DRLs is to enhance the required patient protection so image quality can be maintained, however with relevant DRLs for varying protocols. Establishment of CT typical values and site specific DRLs for procedures beyond the national DRLs can drive dose optimisation locally.

Survey of computed tomography practice in Ukraine and establishment of national diagnostic reference levels for most common CT examinations of adults

This study reports results of the first nationwide survey of computed tomography (CT) practice in Ukraine and proposed national diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for common CT examinations. The collected data included characteristics of CT scanners, frequency of CT exams per anatomical region, dose indices CTDIvol and dose-length product (DLP). National DRLs were proposed at the 75th percentile of median dose indices distributions for four common CT protocols: head without contrast (brain examinations for stroke and trauma), routine chest without contrast, single-phase contrast-enhanced CT of abdomen and pelvis and oncology protocol (chest-abdomen-pelvis). The results showed 4- to 9-fold variations of median dose indices between CT scanners for the same type of examination. The following values of the CTDIvol and DLP were proposed as national DRLs: 59 mGy and 1130 mGy•cm for head, 14 mGy and 492 mGy•cm for chest, 22 mGy and 845 mGy•cm for abdomen/pelvis and 2120 mGy•cm for oncological protocol.

How Do Cancer-Specific Computed Tomography Protocols Compare With the American College of Radiology Dose Index Registry? An Analysis of Computed Tomography Dose at 2 Cancer Centers

BACKGROUND

Little guidance exists on how to stratify radiation dose according to diagnostic task. Changing dose for different cancer types is currently not informed by the American College of Radiology Dose Index Registry dose survey.

METHODS

A total of 9602 patient examinations were pulled from 2 National Cancer Institute designated cancer centers. Computed tomography dose (CTDI vol ) was extracted, and patient water equivalent diameter was calculated. N-way analysis of variance was used to compare the dose levels between 2 protocols used at site 1, and three protocols used at site 2.

RESULTS

Sites 1 and 2 both independently stratified their doses according to cancer indications in similar ways. For example, both sites used lower doses ( P < 0.001) for follow-up of testicular cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma. Median dose at median patient size from lowest to highest dose level for site 1 were 17.9 (17.7-18.0) mGy (mean [95% confidence interval]) and 26.8 (26.2-27.4) mGy. For site 2, they were 12.1 (10.6-13.7) mGy, 25.5 (25.2-25.7) mGy, and 34.2 (33.8-34.5) mGy. Both sites had higher doses ( P < 0.001) between their routine and high-image-quality protocols, with an increase of 48% between these doses for site 1 and 25% for site 2. High-image-quality protocols were largely applied for detection of low-contrast liver lesions or subtle pelvic pathology.

CONCLUSIONS

We demonstrated that 2 cancer centers independently choose to stratify their cancer doses in similar ways. Sites 1 and 2 dose data were higher than the American College of Radiology Dose Index Registry dose survey data. We thus propose including a cancer-specific subset for the dose registry.

Current and potential applications of artificial intelligence in medical imaging practice: A narrative review

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Artificial intelligence (AI) is present in many areas of our lives. Much of the digital data generated in health care can be used for building automated systems to bring improvements to existing workflows and create a more personalised healthcare experience for patients. This review outlines select current and potential AI applications in medical imaging practice and provides a view of how diagnostic imaging suites will operate in the future. Challenges associated with potential applications will be discussed and healthcare staff considerations necessary to benefit from AI-enabled solutions will be outlined.

METHODS

Several electronic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and University College Dublin Library Database, were used to identify relevant articles with a Boolean search strategy. Textbooks, government sources and vendor websites were also considered.

RESULTS/DISCUSSION

Many AI-enabled solutions in radiographic practice are available with more automation on the horizon. Traditional workflow will become faster, more effective, and more user friendly. AI can handle administrative or technical types of work, meaning it is applicable across all aspects of medical imaging practice.

CONCLUSION

AI offers significant potential to automate most of the manual tasks, ensure service consistency, and improve patient care. Radiographers, radiation therapists, and clinicians should ensure they have adequate understanding of the technology to enable ethical oversight of its implementation.

CT doses based on clinical indications. New national DRL's in Iceland

A diagnostic reference level (DRL) is an investigation level to use in the optimization of a medical exposure using ionizing radiation. The aim of this project was to gather dose data from computed tomography (CT) studies in Iceland with the purpose of updating existing national DRL and proposing DRLs based on clinical indications. Dose data (total dose length product (DLP) and CT dose index) were retrospectively collected from all CT scanners in Iceland for 50 patients for all common CT studies. After cleaning the data, the data set contained total DLP for 8129 patients. Considering dose-relevant parameters such as the number of phases and scan length, each CT study was assigned to one of 42 study types and (at least) one clinical indication. Data were received from seven or more scanners for 13 clinical indications and from all scanners providing coronary angiography. There was considerable variation in the median total DLP from different scanners, e.g., from 13 to 139 mGycm for Sinusitis, and, the range of individual total DLPs varied between scanners. This underscores the importance of monitoring patients' exposure. The study shows that there is room for optimization. New Icelandic NDRLs were proposed for the total DLP of CT examinations based on ten different indications, including: Brain ischemia (1060 mGycm), Interstitial lung disease (310 mGycm) and Appendicitis (690 mGycm). The proposed NDRLs were the first clinical indication based NDRLs in Iceland. The Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority has decided to update the NDRLs based on the results of this study.

Diagnostic reference level quantities for adult chest and abdomen-pelvis CT examinations: correlation with organ doses

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate correlations between DRL quantities (DRLq) stratified into patient size groups for non-contrast chest and abdomen-pelvis CT examinations in adult patients and the corresponding organ doses.

METHODS

This study presents correlations between DRLq  (CTDI_vol, DLP and SSDE) stratified into patient size ranges and corresponding organ doses shared in four groups: inside, peripheral, distributed and outside. The demographic, technical and dosimetric parameters were used to identify the influence of these quantities in organ doses. A robust statistical method was implemented in order to establish these correlations and its statistical significance.

RESULTS

Median values of the grouped organ doses are presented according to the effective diameter ranges. Organ doses in the regions inside the imaged area are higher than the organ doses in peripheral, distributed and outside regions, excepted to the peripheral doses associated with chest examinations. Different levels of statistical significance between organ doses and the DRLq were presented.

CONCLUSIONS

Correlations between DRLq and target-organ doses associated with clinical practice can support guidance's to the establishment of optimization criteria. SSDE demonstrated to be significant in the evaluation of organ doses is also highlighted. The proposed model allows the design of optimization actions with specific risk-reduction results.

Feasibility and Accuracy of Robot-Assisted, Stereotactic Biopsy Using 3-Dimensional Intraoperative Imaging and Frameless Registration Tool

BACKGROUND

Robot-assisted stereotactic biopsy is evolving: 3-dimensional intraoperative imaging tools and new frameless registration systems are spreading.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the accuracy and effectiveness of a new stereotactic biopsy procedure.

METHODS

Observational, retrospective analysis of consecutive robot-assisted stereotactic biopsies using the Neurolocate (Renishaw) frameless registration system and intraoperative O-Arm (Medtronic) performed at a single institution in adults (2019-2021) and comparison with a historical series from the same institution (2006-2016) not using the Neurolocate nor the O-Arm.

RESULTS

In 100 patients (55% men), 6.2 ± 2.5 (1-14) biopsy samples were obtained at 1.7 ± 0.7 (1-3) biopsy sites. An histomolecular diagnosis was obtained in 96% of cases. The mean duration of the procedure was 59.0 ± 22.3 min. The mean distance between the planned and the actual target was 0.7 ± 0.7 mm. On systematic postoperative computed tomography scans, a hemorrhage ≥10 mm was observed in 8 cases (8%) while pneumocephalus was distant from the biopsy site in 76%. A Karnofsky Performance Status score decrease ≥20 points postoperatively was observed in 4%. The average dose length product was 159.7 ± 63.4 mGy cm. Compared with the historical neurosurgical procedure, this new procedure had similar diagnostic yield (96 vs 98.7%; P = .111) and rate of postoperative disability (4.0 vs 4.2%, P = .914) but was shorter (57.8 ± 22.9 vs 77.8 ± 20.9 min; P < .001) despite older patients.

CONCLUSION

Robot-assisted stereotactic biopsy using the Neurolocate frameless registration system and intraoperative O-Arm is a safe and effective neurosurgical procedure. The accuracy of this robot-assisted surgery supports its effectiveness for daily use in stereotactic neurosurgery.

Is it necessary to define new diagnostic reference levels during pandemics like the Covid19-?

Introduction

This study intended to assess the dose length product (DLP), effective cumulative radiation dose (E.D.), and additional cancer risk (ACR) due to a chest CT scan to detect or follow up the Covid-19 disease in four university-affiliated hospitals that used different imaging protocols. Indeed, this study aimed to examine the differences in decision-making between different imaging centers in choosing chest CT imaging protocols during the pandemic, and to assess whether a new diagnostic reference level (DRL) is needed in pandemic situations.

Methods

This retrospective study assessed the E.D. of all chest imagings for Covid-19 for six months in four different hospitals in our country. Imaging parameters and DLP (mGy.cm) were recorded. The E.D.s and ACRs from chest CT scans were calculated using an online calculator.

Results

Thousand-six hundred patients were included in the study. The mean cumulative dose due to chest CT was 3.97 mSv which might cause 2.59 × 10^-2 ACR. The mean cumulative E.D. in different hospitals was in the range of 1.96-9.51 mSv.

Conclusions

The variety of mean E.D.s shows that different hospitals used different imaging protocols. Since there is no defined DRL in the pandemic, some centers use routine protocols, and others try to reduce the dose but insufficiently.In pandemics such as Covid-19, when CT scan is used for screening or follow-up, DLPs can be significantly lower than in normal situations. Therefore, international regularized organizations such as the international atomic energy agency (IAEA) or the international commission on radiological protection (IRCP) should provide new DRL ranges.

DEVELOPING DIAGNOSTIC REFERENCE LEVELS FOR CT EXAMINATIONS IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

Diagnostic reference level (DRL) is an appropriate instrument toward promoting radiation doses optimisation in medical imaging. The goal of this research is developing DRL to optimise computed tomography (CT) doses in patient examination. Parameters were collected in CT facilities for common procedures such as head, chest, pelvic and cervical spine (c-spine) imaging. The dose descriptors considered were volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIv) and dose length product (DLP). The DRLs were proposed at 75th percentile CTDIv for head (without and with contrast materials), chest (without and with contrast materials), pelvic and c-spine only without contrast materials; their values were 52, 52, 17, 14, 14 and 38 mGy, respectively. Whereas, DLP values for the aforementioned protocols were 1237, 1459, 625, 565, 605 and 1106 mGy.cm, respectively. This study fruitfully developed the DRLs for head, chest, pelvic and c-spine and can be accepted for clinical purposes.

Patient dose increase caused by posteroanterior CT localizer radiographs

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to compare the output dose (volume CT dose index [ CTDI_vol], and dose length product [DLP]) of automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) determined by localizer radiographs obtained in the anteroposterior (AP) and posteroanterior (PA) directions.

METHODS

One hundred and twenty-four patients who underwent upper abdomen and/or chest-to-pelvis computed tomography (CT) were included. Patients underwent two series of CT examinations, and localizer radiographs were obtained in the AP and PA directions. The horizontal diameter of the localizer radiograph, scan length, CTDI_vol, and DLP were measured.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in the scan length; however, all the other values were significantly higher in the PA direction. The mean horizontal diameter was 33.1 ± 2.6 cm and 35.4 ± 2.9 cm in the AP and PA directions of the localizer radiographs, respectively. The CTDI_vol and DLP in the PA direction increased by approximately 7-8%. Bland-Altman plots between AP and PA localizer directions in upper abdominal CT showed a positive bias of 1.1 mGy and 30.0 mGy cm for CTDI_vol and DLP, respectively. Correspondingly, chest-to-pelvic CT showed a positive bias of 0.93 mGy and 69.3 mGy cm for CTDI_vol and DLP, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The output dose of ATCM determined by localizer radiographs obtained in the PA direction was increased compared to the AP direction. Localizer radiographs obtained in the AP direction should be preferred for optimizing the output dose using ATCM.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Based on the evidence of this study, localizer radiographs obtained in the AP direction should be preferred for optimizing the output dose in CT examinations.

Establishment of CT diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for a Singapore healthcare cluster

INTRODUCTION

The use of computed tomography (CT) in healthcare institutions has increased rapidly in recent years. The Singapore Health Services (SingHealth) cluster of healthcare institutions has taken the first step in establishing a local cluster-wide CT Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL) in Singapore. CT dose data from each institution were collected through two primary dosimetry metrics: volume CT dose index (CTDI_vol measured in mGy) and dose-length product (DLP measured in mGy.cm).

METHODS

Data from 19 CT scanners in seven institutions under one of Singapore healthcare cluster were retrospectively collected and analysed. The five common adult CT examinations analysed were CT Brain (non-contrast enhanced), CT Chest (IV contrast enhanced), CT Kidney-Ureter-Bladder (CT KUB, non-contrast enhanced), CT Pulmonary Angiogram (CT PA, IV contrast enhanced) and CT Abdomen-Pelvis (CT AP, IV contrast enhanced, single phase). Median CTDI_vol and DLP values for the five CT examinations from each institution were derived, with the cluster DRLs determined as the 75th percentile of the distribution of the institution median dose values.

RESULTS

A total of 2413 dose data points were collected over a six-month period from June to November 2020. The cluster CT DRLs for the five CT examinations were determined to be 47 mGy and 820 mGy.cm for CT Brain, 5.4 mGy and 225 mGy.cm for CT Chest, 6.7 mGy and 248 mGy.cm for CT PA, 4.6 mGy and 190 mGy.cm for CT KUB and 6.9 mGy and 349 mGy.cm for CT AP.

CONCLUSION

The establishment of the cluster CT DRLs provided individual institutions with a better understanding if their CT doses are unusually high or low, while emphasising that these DRLs are not meant as hard dose limits or constraints to follow strictly.

Oncology-specific radiation dose and image noise reference levels in adult abdominal-pelvic CT

OBJECTIVES

To provide our oncology-specific adult abdominal-pelvic CT reference levels for image noise and radiation dose from a high-volume, oncologic, tertiary referral center.

METHODS

The portal venous phase abdomen-pelvis acquisition was assessed for image noise and radiation dose in 13,320 contrast-enhanced CT examinations. Patient size (effective diameter) and radiation dose (CTDIvol) were recorded using a commercial software system, and image noise (Global Noise metric) was quantified using a custom processing system. The reference level and range for dose and noise were calculated for the full dataset, and for examinations grouped by CT scanner model. Dose and noise reference levels were also calculated for exams grouped by five different patient size categories.

RESULTS

The noise reference level was 11.25 HU with a reference range of 10.25-12.25 HU. The dose reference level at a median effective diameter of 30.7 cm was 26.7 mGy with a reference range of 19.6-37.0 mGy. Dose increased with patient size; however, image noise remained approximately constant within the noise reference range. The doses were 2.1-2.5 times than the doses in the ACR DIR registry for corresponding patient sizes. The image noise was 0.63-0.75 times the previously published reference level in abdominal-pelvic CT examinations.

CONCLUSIONS

Our oncology-specific abdominal-pelvic CT dose reference levels are higher than in the ACR dose index registry and our oncology-specific image noise reference levels are lower than previously proposed image noise reference levels.

ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE

This study reports reference image noise and radiation dose levels appropriate for the indication of abdomen-pelvis CT examination for cancer diagnosis and staging. The difference in these reference levels from non-oncology-specific CT examinations highlight a need for indication-specific, dose index and image quality reference registries.

Evaluation of the quantitative performance of non-enhanced dual-energy CT X-map in detecting acute ischemic brain stroke: A model observer study using computer simulation

PURPOSE

A simulation study was performed to evaluate the quantitative performance of X-map images-derived from non-enhanced (NE) dual-energy computed tomography (DECT)-in detecting acute ischemic stroke (AIS) compared with that of NE-DECT mixed images.

METHODS

A virtual phantom, 150 mm in diameter, filled with tissues comprising various gray- and white-matter proportions was used to generate pairs of NE-head images at 80 kV and Sn150 kV at three dose levels (20, 40, and 60 mGy). The phantom included an inserted low-contrast object, 15 mm in diameter, with four densities (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%) mimicking ischemic edema. Mixed and X-map images were generated from these sets of images and compared in terms of detectability of ischemic edema using a channelized Hotelling observer (CHO). The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic that generated CHO for each condition was used as a figure of merit.

RESULTS

The AUCs of X-map images were always significantly higher than those of mixed images (P < 0.001). The improvement in AUC for X-map images compared with that for mixed images at edema densities was 9.2%-12.6% at 20 mGy, 10.1%-17.7% at 40 mGy, and 14.0%-19.4% at 60 mGy. At any edema density, X-map images at 20 mGy resulted in higher AUCs than mixed images acquired at any other dose level (P < 0.001), which corresponded to a 66% dose reduction on X-map images.

CONCLUSIONS

The simulation study confirmed that NE-DECT X-map images have superior capability of detecting AIS than NE-DECT mixed images.

INVESTIGATION OF RADIATION RISKS BASED ON THE CLINICAL FINDINGS FROM HEAD CT SCANS IN TRAUMA

This study aimed to investigate the radiation risks in terms of effective dose and the cancer risk probability resulting from computed tomography (CT) scans of the head for traumatic patients and determine how often traumatic abnormalities occur. Data were collected retrospectively for 138 traumatic patients from the picture archiving and communication system, including exposure parameters and clinical findings. The mean values of the dose length product, CT dose index volume and effective dose for the CT head examinations were 787 ± 67.7 mGy•cm, 40.1 ± 1.33 mGy and 1.47 ± 0.12 mSv, respectively. Of the total cases of CT scans of the head, 57.2% (n = 79) exhibited positive findings. The cancer risk probability for the patients was 6.04 × 10-5 per procedure, with no statistically significant differences between positive and negative findings (p = 0.345). Taking into consideration the justification of the examination, the risk of missing positive findings and the radiation risks, the immediate benefit of head CT for trauma patients for guiding medical decisions outweighs the radiation risk that will probably manifest later.

Dental imaging using an ultra-high resolution photon-counting CT system

Clinical photon-counting CT (PCCT) offers a spatial resolution of about 200 µm and might allow for acquisitions close to conventional dental CBCTs. In this study, the capabilities of this new system in comparison to dental CBCTs shall be evaluated. All 8 apical osteolysis identified in CBCT were identified by both readers in all three PCCT scan protocols. Mean visibility scores showed statistical significant differences for root canals(p = 0.0001), periodontal space(p = 0.0090), cortical(p = 0.0003) and spongious bone(p = 0.0293) in favor of high and medium dose PCCT acquisitions. Overall, both devices showed excellent image quality of all structures assessed. Interrater-agreement showed high values for all protocols in all structures. Bland-Altman plots revealed a high concordance of both modalities with the reference measurements. In vitro, ultra-high resolution PCCT can reliably identify different diagnostic entities and structures relevant for dental diagnostics similar to conventional dental CBCT with similar radiation dose. Acquisitions of five cadaveric heads were performed in an experimental CT-system containing an ultra-high resolution PC detector (0.25 mm pixel size in isocenter) as well as in a dental CBCT scanner. Acquisitions were performed using dose levels of 8.5 mGy, 38.0 mGy and 66.5 mGy (CTDI16cm) in case of PCCT and of 8.94 mGy (CTDI16cm) in case of CBCT. The quality of delineation of hard tissues, root-canals, periodontal-space as well as apical osteolysis was assessed by two readers. Mean visibility scores and interrater-agreement (overall agreement (%)) were calculated. Vertical bone loss (bl) and thickness (bt) of the buccal bone lamina of 15 lower incisors were measured and compared to reference measurements by ore microscopy and clinical probing.

T-shirt size as a classification for body habitus in computed tomography (CT) and development of size-based dose reference levels for different indications

PURPOSE

To examine the impact of patient size on dose indices and develop size-based reference levels (50th and 75th percentiles) for 20 body CT exams for routine and organ-specific clinical indications.

METHODS

Based on effective diameter estimated from adult body CT, each acquisition was classified into T-shirt size as XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL. Radiation dose indices for each size and each exam type were correlated.

RESULTS

About 0.93 million CT exams from 256 CT facilities in the United States were analysed. Taking T-shirt size M as a reference, the CTDI_vol for other sizes were: XXS (∼60%), XS (∼65%), S (∼75%), L (∼130%), XL (∼165%), XXL (∼210%), or grossly small patients received about 60% of the dose as compared to M sized patients and XXL required doubling the dose. Taking ratio of the dose indices of the largest to smallest size, it was evident that SSDE variation was much less (about 50%) than that in CTDI_vol, but there was still nearly 40 to 220% variation in SSDE across the range of t-shirt sizes. The 50th and 75th percentile values are presented for CTDI_vol, SSDE and DLP for each of the 20 CT exams and for each of the seven T-shirt sizes.

CONCLUSIONS

A novel approach expressing body habitus in terms of T-shirt size is not only simple and intuitive, but it also provides a tool to have a perception of differences in dose metrices among patients of different body build.

Chest X-rays of newborns in a medical facility: variation between the entrance skin dose measurements using the indirect and direct methods for clinical dose audit

PURPOSE

This study aims to determine the mean and 75th percentile entrance skin dose (ESD_cal) from anteroposterior (AP) chest X-rays using machine parameters (indirect method). Also, a comparison was made between the ESD_cal and already determined thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) measurements (ESD_TLD) from a previous study from the same patients' data. In addition, the results were compared to similar articles, where the direct and indirect methods were used in estimating ESD to newborns.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study determined the digital radiography (DR) X-ray machine output using a calibrated XR Multidetector (silicon photodiode). X-ray machine milliampere-seconds (mAs), peak kilovoltage (kVp), focus to detector distance (FDD) and focus to skin distance (FSD) were used from a previous study. The mean kVp and mAs were 56.63 (52-60) and 5.7 (5-6.3) and the patient thickness was 9.5 (8-11.5) cm.

RESULTS

The mean ESDs of the newborn between 0 and 28 days were 0.67 ± 0.09 mGy, and the 75th percentile was 0.75 mGy. The effective dose (E) for the 40 patients was 0.19 mSv and the estimated prenatal cancer risk ranged from (5-24.7) 10^-6 Sv^-1. The variation between the indirect and the direct methods for assessing ESD was 39.6 (33.7-45.1)%.

CONCLUSION

The 75th percentile ESD was the highest compared to the American College of Radiology-American Association of Physicists in Medicine-Society for Pediatric Radiology (ACR-AAPM-SPR), European Commission (EC) and United Kingdom (UK) reports. Comparison of both methods for assessing ESD was within 40% as compared to other studies. Based on the above results, the indirect method can be implemented for clinical dose audit.

Assessment of task-based image quality for abdominal CT protocols linked with national diagnostic reference levels

Objectives

To assess task-based image quality for two abdominal protocols on various CT scanners. To establish a relationship between diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) and task-based image quality.

Methods

A protocol for the detection of focal liver lesions was used to scan an anthropomorphic abdominal phantom containing 8- and 5-mm low-contrast (20 HU) spheres at five CTDI_vol levels (4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 mGy) on 12 CTs. Another phantom with high-contrast calcium targets (200 HU) was scanned at 2, 4, 6, 10, and 15 mGy using a renal stones protocol on the same CTs. To assess the detectability, a channelized Hotelling observer was used for low-contrast targets and a non-prewhitening observer with an eye filter was used for high contrast targets. The area under the ROC curve and signal to noise ratio were used as figures of merit.

Results

For the detection of 8-mm spheres, the image quality reached a high level (mean AUC over all CTs higher than 0.95) at 11 mGy. For the detection of 5-mm spheres, the AUC never reached a high level of image quality. Variability between CTs was found, especially at low dose levels. For the search of renal stones, the AUC was nearly maximal even for the lowest dose level.

Conclusions

Comparable task-based image quality cannot be reached at the same dose level on all CT scanners. This variability implies the need for scanner-specific dose optimization.

Management of patients with digestive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical Practice Guidelines by the Russian scientific medical society of internal medicine (RSMSIM) and the Gastroenterological Scientific Society of Russia (2nd edition)

The presented clinical practice guidelines of the Gastroenterological Scientific Society of Russia (GSSR), diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches for patients with digestive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidelines were approved by the XXIII Congress of the GSSR and the 22nd International Slavonic-Baltic Scientifi c Forum “St. Petersburg - Gastro-2020 ON-LINE” (St. Petersburg, June 11, 2020). The presented clinical practice guidelines of the Russian Scientific Medical Society of Internal Medicine (RSMSIM) and the Gastroenterological Scientific Society of Russia (GSSR), diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches for patients with digestive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. The recommendations were approved at the XV National Congress of Internal Medicine, XXIII Congress of NOGR on the basis of the 1st edition, adopted at the 22nd International Slavic- Baltic Scientific Forum “St. Petersburg - Gastro-2020 ON-LINE”.

Low Dose Chest CT and Lung Ultrasound for the Diagnosis and Management of COVID-19

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic has provided an opportunity to use low- and non-radiating chest imaging techniques on a large scale in the context of an infectious disease, which has never been done before. Previously, low-dose techniques were rarely used for infectious diseases, despite the recognised danger of ionising radiation.

METHOD

To evaluate the role of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) and lung ultrasound (LUS) in managing COVID-19 pneumonia, we performed a review of the literature including our cases.

RESULTS

Chest LDCT is now performed routinely when diagnosing and assessing the severity of COVID-19, allowing patients to be rapidly triaged. The extent of lung involvement assessed by LDCT is accurate in terms of predicting poor clinical outcomes in COVID-19-infected patients. Infectious disease specialists are less familiar with LUS, but this technique is also of great interest for a rapid diagnosis of patients with COVID-19 and is effective at assessing patient prognosis.

CONCLUSIONS

COVID-19 is currently accelerating the transition to low-dose and "no-dose" imaging techniques to explore infectious pneumonia and their long-term consequences.

ESR EuroSafe Imaging and its role in promoting radiation protection - 6 years of success

This article introduces the European Society of Radiology’s EuroSafe Imaging initiative in the year of its 6th anniversary. The European and global radiation protection frameworks are outlined and the role of the EuroSafe Imaging initiative’s Call for Action in successfully achieving international radiation protection goals as set out by those frameworks is detailed.

Clinical indication-based diagnostic reference levels for paediatric head computed tomography examinations in Kano Metropolis, northwestern Nigeria

INTRODUCTION

Paediatric patients are recognised to be at higher risk of developing radiation-induced cancer than adults because of rapidly growing organs and tissues which are vulnerable to cellular damage. The aim of the study was to determine indication based Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL_CI) for paediatric head computed tomography (CT) examinations within Kano metropolis, Nigeria.

METHODS

CT dose index (CTDI_vol), dose length product (DLP) and other scan parameters were recorded for 113 paediatric undergoing CT head examinations. Different clinical indications were recorded and categorised in addition to patient age. Third quartile values (75th percentile) of the median dose were considered as DRL_CI. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test for differences between DRL_CI, for different age groups, and variations among institutions. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23.0 was used for analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

RESULTS

DRL_CI for Hydrocephalus for <5 years and 5-10 years was 28.10 mGy and 28.11 mGy with DLP of 1623.20 mGy cm and 1623.21 mGy cm, respectively. The 11-15 year group recorded 29.10 mGy and 1625.20 mGy cm. Indications of haemorrhage/trauma and post-seizure imaging all had same values for <5 years and 5-10 years (28.10 mGy and 1623.20 mGy cm) while the 11 to 15-year group recorded 39.60 mGy and 1626 mGy cm. Intracranial Space Occupying lesion had the same DRL_CI value for < 5years and 5-10 years (29.0 mGy and 1600 mGy cm, respectively) the 11 to 15-year group recorded values of 46.20 mGy and 1663.4 mGy cm. There was no statistically significant difference between DRL_CI for <5 years and 5 to 10-year age groups (p = 0.199), while different centres showed some statistically significant relationships (p = 0.02).

CONCLUSION

The study noted dose differences between age groups less than 10 years and above ten years, there were some statistically significant relationship with DRL_CI. Dose optimisation techniques for paediatric examinations together with selection of the right protocol for paediatric head CT are necessary.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The study has provided DRL_CI for paediatric head CT examinations. These values can be used for future comparisons and as a potential dose optimisation tool. Such data can also guide radiographers when selecting appropriate parameters for indication-based CT examination to help achieve a low dose with acceptable image quality.
