Optimized virtual reality design through user immersion level detection with novel feature fusion and explainable artificial intelligence

Virtual reality (VR) and immersive technology have emerged as powerful tools with numerous applications. VR technology creates a computer-generated simulation that immerses users in a virtual environment, providing a highly realistic and interactive experience. This technology finds applications in various fields, including gaming, healthcare, education, architecture, and training simulations. Understanding user immersion levels in VR is crucial and challenging for optimizing the design of VR applications. Immersion refers to the extent to which users feel absorbed and engrossed in the virtual environment. This research primarily aims to detect user immersion levels in VR using an efficient machine-learning model. We utilized a benchmark dataset based on user experiences in VR environments to conduct our experiments. Advanced deep and machine learning approaches are applied in comparison. We proposed a novel technique called Polynomial Random Forest (PRF) for feature generation mechanisms. The proposed PRF approach extracts polynomial and class prediction probability features to generate a new feature set. Extensive research experiments show that random forest outperformed state-of-the-art approaches, achieving a high immersion level detection rate of 98%, using the proposed PRF technique. We applied hyperparameter optimization and cross-validation approaches to validate the performance scores. Additionally, we utilized explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to interpret the reasoning behind the decisions made by the proposed model for user immersion level detection in VR. Our research has the potential to revolutionize user immersion level detection in VR, enhancing the design process.

Enhancing fraud detection in auto insurance and credit card transactions: a novel approach integrating CNNs and machine learning algorithms

Fraudulent activities especially in auto insurance and credit card transactions impose significant financial losses on businesses and individuals. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel approach for fraud detection, combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with support vector machine (SVM), k nearest neighbor (KNN), naive Bayes (NB), and decision tree (DT) algorithms. The core of this methodology lies in utilizing the deep features extracted from the CNNs as inputs to various machine learning models, thus significantly contributing to the enhancement of fraud detection accuracy and efficiency. Our results demonstrate superior performance compared to previous studies, highlighting our model's potential for widespread adoption in combating fraudulent activities.

A Novel Multi-Scaled Deep Convolutional Structure for Punctilious Human Gait Authentication

The need for non-interactive human recognition systems to ensure safe isolation between users and biometric equipment has been exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study introduces a novel Multi-Scaled Deep Convolutional Structure for Punctilious Human Gait Authentication (MSDCS-PHGA). The proposed MSDCS-PHGA involves segmenting, preprocessing, and resizing silhouette images into three scales. Gait features are extracted from these multi-scale images using custom convolutional layers and fused to form an integrated feature set. This multi-scaled deep convolutional approach demonstrates its efficacy in gait recognition by significantly enhancing accuracy. The proposed convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture is assessed using three benchmark datasets: CASIA, OU-ISIR, and OU-MVLP. Moreover, the proposed model is evaluated against other pre-trained models using key performance metrics such as precision, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and training time. The results indicate that the proposed deep CNN model outperforms existing models focused on human gait. Notably, it achieves an accuracy of approximately 99.9% for both the CASIA and OU-ISIR datasets and 99.8% for the OU-MVLP dataset while maintaining a minimal training time of around 3 min.

Towards secure IoT networks: A comprehensive study of metaheuristic algorithms in conjunction with CNN using a self-generated dataset

The Internet of Things (IoT) has radically reformed various sectors and industries, enabling unprecedented levels of connectivity and automation. However, the surge in the number of IoT devices has also widened the attack surface, rendering IoT networks potentially susceptible to a plethora of security risks. Addressing the critical challenge of enhancing security in IoT networks is of utmost importance. Moreover, there is a considerable lack of datasets designed exclusively for IoT applications. To bridge this gap, a customized dataset that accurately mimics real-world IoT scenarios impacted by four different types of attacks-blackhole, sinkhole, flooding, and version number attacks was generated using the Contiki-OS Cooja Simulator in this study. The resulting dataset is then consequently employed to evaluate the efficacy of several metaheuristic algorithms, in conjunction with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for IoT networks. •The proposed study's goal is to identify optimal hyperparameters for CNNs, ensuring their peak performance in intrusion detection tasks.•This study not only intensifies our comprehension of IoT network security but also provides practical guidance for implementation of the robust security measures in real-world IoT applications.

EEG-based emotion recognition systems; comprehensive study

Emotion recognition technology through EEG signal analysis is currently a fundamental concept in artificial intelligence. This recognition has major practical implications in emotional health care, human-computer interaction, and so on. This paper provides a comprehensive study of different methods for extracting electroencephalography (EEG) features for emotion recognition from four different perspectives, including time domain features, frequency domain features, time-frequency features, and nonlinear features. We summarize the current pattern recognition methods adopted in most related works, and with the rapid development of deep learning (DL) attracting the attention of researchers in this field, we pay more attention to deep learning-based studies and analyse the characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and applicable scenarios. Finally, the current challenges and future development directions in this field were summarized. This paper can help novice researchers in this field gain a systematic understanding of the current status of emotion recognition research based on EEG signals and provide ideas for subsequent related research.

Efficient screening of pharmacological broad-spectrum anti-cancer peptides utilizing advanced bidirectional Encoder representation from Transformers strategy

In the vanguard of oncological advancement, this investigation delineates the integration of deep learning paradigms to refine the screening process for Anticancer Peptides (ACPs), epitomizing a new frontier in broad-spectrum oncolytic therapeutics renowned for their targeted antitumor efficacy and specificity. Conventional methodologies for ACP identification are marred by prohibitive time and financial exigencies, representing a formidable impediment to the evolution of precision oncology. In response, our research heralds the development of a groundbreaking screening apparatus that marries Natural Language Processing (NLP) with the Pseudo Amino Acid Composition (PseAAC) technique, thereby inaugurating a comprehensive ACP compendium for the extraction of quintessential primary and secondary structural attributes. This innovative methodological approach is augmented by an optimized BERT model, meticulously calibrated for ACP detection, which conspicuously surpasses existing BERT variants and traditional machine learning algorithms in both accuracy and selectivity. Subjected to rigorous validation via five-fold cross-validation and external assessment, our model exhibited exemplary performance, boasting an average Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.9726 and an F1 score of 0.9385, with external validation further affirming its prowess (AUC of 0.9848 and F1 of 0.9371). These findings vividly underscore the method's unparalleled efficacy and prospective utility in the precise identification and prognostication of ACPs, significantly ameliorating the financial and temporal burdens traditionally associated with ACP research and development. Ergo, this pioneering screening paradigm promises to catalyze the discovery and clinical application of ACPs, constituting a seminal stride towards the realization of more efficacious and economically viable precision oncology interventions.

A systematic review on diabetic retinopathy detection and classification based on deep learning techniques using fundus images

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of visual impairment globally. It occurs due to long-term diabetes with fluctuating blood glucose levels. It has become a significant concern for people in the working age group as it can lead to vision loss in the future. Manual examination of fundus images is time-consuming and requires much effort and expertise to determine the severity of the retinopathy. To diagnose and evaluate the disease, deep learning-based technologies have been used, which analyze blood vessels, microaneurysms, exudates, macula, optic discs, and hemorrhages also used for initial detection and grading of DR. This study examines the fundamentals of diabetes, its prevalence, complications, and treatment strategies that use artificial intelligence methods such as machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and federated learning (FL). The research covers future studies, performance assessments, biomarkers, screening methods, and current datasets. Various neural network designs, including recurrent neural networks (RNNs), generative adversarial networks (GANs), and applications of ML, DL, and FL in the processing of fundus images, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and their variations, are thoroughly examined. The potential research methods, such as developing DL models and incorporating heterogeneous data sources, are also outlined. Finally, the challenges and future directions of this research are discussed.

An enhanced and efficient approach for feature selection for chronic human disease prediction: A breast cancer study

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems play a vital role in modern research by effectively minimizing both time and costs. These systems support healthcare professionals like radiologists in their decision-making process by efficiently detecting abnormalities as well as offering accurate and dependable information. These systems heavily depend on the efficient selection of features to accurately categorize high-dimensional biological data. These features can subsequently assist in the diagnosis of related medical conditions. The task of identifying patterns in biomedical data can be quite challenging due to the presence of numerous irrelevant or redundant features. Therefore, it is crucial to propose and then utilize a feature selection (FS) process in order to eliminate these features. The primary goal of FS approaches is to improve the accuracy of classification by eliminating features that are irrelevant or less informative. The FS phase plays a critical role in attaining optimal results in machine learning (ML)-driven CAD systems. The effectiveness of ML models can be significantly enhanced by incorporating efficient features during the training phase. This empirical study presents a methodology for the classification of biomedical data using the FS technique. The proposed approach incorporates three soft computing-based optimization algorithms, namely Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO), and a proposed hybrid algorithm of these two. These algorithms were previously employed; however, their effectiveness in addressing FS issues in predicting human diseases has not been investigated. The following evaluation focuses on the categorization of benign and malignant tumours using the publicly available Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer (WDBC) benchmark dataset. The five-fold cross-validation technique is employed to mitigate the risk of over-fitting. The evaluation of the proposed approach's proficiency is determined based on several metrics, including sensitivity, specificity, precision, accuracy, area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC), and F1-score. The best value of accuracy computed through the suggested approach is 97.96%. The proposed clinical decision support system demonstrates a highly favourable classification performance outcome, making it a valuable tool for medical practitioners to utilize as a secondary opinion and reducing the overburden of expert medical practitioners.

A comprehensive review on efficient artificial intelligence models for classification of abnormal cardiac rhythms using electrocardiograms

Deep learning has made many advances in data classification using electrocardiogram (ECG) waveforms. Over the past decade, data science research has focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) based models that can analyze ECG waveforms to identify and classify abnormal cardiac rhythms accurately. However, the primary drawback of the current AI models is that most of these models are heavy, computationally intensive, and inefficient in terms of cost for real-time implementation. In this review, we first discuss the current state-of-the-art AI models utilized for ECG-based cardiac rhythm classification. Next, we present some of the upcoming modeling methodologies which have the potential to perform real-time implementation of AI-based heart rhythm diagnosis. These models hold significant promise in being lightweight and computationally efficient without compromising the accuracy. Contemporary models predominantly utilize 12-lead ECG for cardiac rhythm classification and cardiovascular status prediction, increasing the computational burden and making real-time implementation challenging. We also summarize research studies evaluating the potential of efficient data setups to reduce the number of ECG leads without affecting classification accuracy. Lastly, we present future perspectives on AI's utility in precision medicine by providing opportunities for accurate prediction and diagnostics of cardiovascular status in patients.

Enhancing 3D human pose estimation with NIR single-pixel imaging and time-of-flight technology: a deep learning approach

The extraction of 3D human pose and body shape details from a single monocular image is a significant challenge in computer vision. Traditional methods use RGB images, but these are constrained by varying lighting and occlusions. However, cutting-edge developments in imaging technologies have introduced new techniques such as single-pixel imaging (SPI) that can surmount these hurdles. In the near-infrared spectrum, SPI demonstrates impressive capabilities in capturing a 3D human pose. This wavelength can penetrate clothing and is less influenced by lighting variations than visible light, thus providing a reliable means to accurately capture body shape and pose data, even in difficult settings. In this work, we explore the use of an SPI camera operating in the NIR with time-of-flight (TOF) at bands 850-1550 nm as a solution to detect humans in nighttime environments. The proposed system uses the vision transformers (ViT) model to detect and extract the characteristic features of humans for integration over a 3D body model SMPL-X through 3D body shape regression using deep learning. To evaluate the efficacy of NIR-SPI 3D image reconstruction, we constructed a laboratory scenario that simulates nighttime conditions, enabling us to test the feasibility of employing NIR-SPI as a vision sensor in outdoor environments. By assessing the results obtained from this setup, we aim to demonstrate the potential of NIR-SPI as an effective tool to detect humans in nighttime scenarios and capture their accurate 3D body pose and shape.

Identifying optical microscope images of CVD-grown two-dimensional MoS2 by convolutional neural networks and transfer learning

Background

In Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology, scaling down has been a key strategy to improve chip performance and reduce power losses. However, challenges such as sub-threshold leakage and gate leakage, resulting from short-channel effects, contribute to an increase in distributed static power. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) emerge as potential solutions, serving as channel materials with steep sub-threshold swings and lower power consumption. However, the production and development of these 2-dimensional materials require some time-consuming tasks. In order to employ them in different fields, including chip technology, it is crucial to ensure that their production meets the required standards of quality and uniformity; in this context, deep learning techniques show significant potential.

Methods

This research introduces a transfer learning-based deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) flakes based on their uniformity or the occurrence of defects affecting electronic properties. Acquiring and labeling a sufficient number of microscope images for CNN training may not be realistic. To address this challenge, artificial images were generated using Fresnel equations to pre-train the CNN. Subsequently, accuracy was improved through fine-tuning with a limited set of real images.

Results

The proposed transfer learning-based CNN method significantly improved all measurement metrics with respect to the ordinary CNNs. The initial CNN, trained with limited data and without transfer learning, achieved 68% average accuracy for binary classification. Through transfer learning and artificial images, the same CNN achieved 85% average accuracy, demonstrating an average increase of approximately 17%. While this study specifically focuses on MoS2 structures, the same methodology can be extended to other 2-dimensional materials by simply incorporating their specific parameters when generating artificial images.

MTTLm6A: A multi-task transfer learning approach for base-resolution mRNA m6A site prediction based on an improved transformer

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a crucial RNA modification involved in various biological activities. Computational methods have been developed for the detection of m6A sites in Saccharomyces cerevisiae at base-resolution due to their cost-effectiveness and efficiency. However, the generalization of these methods has been hindered by limited base-resolution datasets. Additionally, RMBase contains a vast number of low-resolution m6A sites for Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and base-resolution sites are often inferred from these low-resolution results through post-calibration. We propose MTTLm6A, a multi-task transfer learning approach for base-resolution mRNA m6A site prediction based on an improved transformer. First, the RNA sequences are encoded by using one-hot encoding. Then, we construct a multi-task model that combines a convolutional neural network with a multi-head-attention deep framework. This model not only detects low-resolution m6A sites, it also assigns reasonable probabilities to the predicted sites. Finally, we employ transfer learning to predict base-resolution m6A sites based on the low-resolution m6A sites. Experimental results on Saccharomyces cerevisiae m6A and Homo sapiens m1A data demonstrate that MTTLm6A respectively achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) values of 77.13% and 92.9%, outperforming the state-of-the-art models. At the same time, it shows that the model has strong generalization ability. To enhance user convenience, we have made a user-friendly web server for MTTLm6A publicly available at http://47.242.23.141/MTTLm6A/index.php.

Object detection in optical imaging of the Internet of Things based on deep learning

This article endeavors to enhance image recognition technology within the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). A dynamic image target detection training model is established through the convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm within the framework of deep learning (DL). Three distinct model configurations are proposed: a nine-layer convolution model, a seven-layer convolution model, and a residual module convolution model. Subsequently, the simulation model of CNN image target detection based on optical imaging is constructed, and the simulation experiments are conducted in scenarios of simple and salient environments, complex and salient environments, and intricate micro-environment. By determining the optimal training iterations, comparisons are drawn in terms of precision, accuracy, Intersection Over Union (IoU), and frames per second (FPS) among different model configurations. Finally, an attention mechanism is incorporated within the DL framework, leading to the construction of an attention mechanism CNN target detection model that operates at three difficulty levels: simple, intermediate, and challenging. Through comparative analysis against prevalent target detection algorithms, this article delves into the accuracy and detection efficiency of various models for IoT target detection. Key findings include: (1) The seven-layer CNN model exhibits commendable accuracy and confidence in simple and salient environments, although it encounters certain instances of undetected images, indicating scope for improvement. (2) The residual network model, when employing a loss function comprising both mean square error (MSE) and cross entropy, demonstrates superior performance in complex and salient environments, manifesting high precision, IoU, and accuracy metrics, thereby establishing itself as a robust detection model. (3) Within intricate micro-environments, the residual CNN model, utilizing loss functions of MSE and cross entropy, yields substantial results, with precision, IoU, and FPS values amounting to 0.99, 0.83, and 29.9, respectively. (4) The CNN model enriched with an attention mechanism outperforms other models in IoT target image detection, achieving the highest accuracy rates of 24.86%, 17.8%, and 14.77% in the simple, intermediate, and challenging levels, respectively. Although this model entails slightly longer detection times, its overall detection performance is excellent, augmenting the effectiveness of object detection within IoT. This article strives to enhance image target detection accuracy and speed, bolster the recognition capability of IoT systems, and refine dynamic image target detection within IoT settings. The implications encompass reduced manual recognition costs and the provision of a theoretical foundation for optimizing imaging and image target detection technologies in the IoT context.

Zero-Inflated Count Regression Models in Solving Challenges Posed by Outlier-Prone Data; an Application to Length of Hospital Stay

Introduction

Ignoring outliers in data may lead to misleading results. Length of stay (LOS) is often considered a count variable with a high frequency of outliers. This study exemplifies the potential of robust methodologies in enhancing the accuracy and reliability of analyses conducted on skewed and outlier-prone count data of LOS.

Methods

The application of Zero-Inflated Poisson (ZIP) and robust Zero-Inflated Poisson (RZIP) models in solving challenges posed by outlier LOS data were evaluated. The ZIP model incorporates two components, tackling excess zeros with a zero-inflation component and modeling positive counts with a Poisson component. The RZIP model introduces the Robust Expectation-Solution (RES) algorithm to enhance parameter estimation and address the impact of outliers on the model's performance.

Results

Data from 254 intensive care unit patients were analyzed (62.2% male). Patients aged 65 or older accounted for 58.3% of the sample. Notably, 38.6% of patients exhibited zero LOS. The overall mean LOS was 5.89 (± 9.81) days, and 9.45% of cases displayed outliers. Our analysis using the RZIP model revealed significant predictors of LOS, including age, underlying comorbidities (p<0.001), and insurance status (p=0.013). Model comparison demonstrated the RZIP model's superiority over ZIP, as evidenced by lower Akaike information criteria (AIC) and Bayesians information criteria (BIC) values.

Conclusions

The application of the RZIP model allowed us to uncover meaningful insights into the factors influencing LOS, paving the way for more informed decision-making in hospital management.

Estimation of concrete materials uniaxial compressive strength using soft computing techniques

This study addresses a critical gap in concrete strength prediction by conducting a comparative analysis of three deep learning algorithms: convolutional neural networks (CNNs), gated recurrent units (GRUs), and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Unlike previous studies that employed various machine learning algorithms on diverse concrete types, our study focuses on mixed-design concrete and fine-tuned deep learning algorithms. The objective is to identify the optimal deep learning (DL) algorithm for predicting concrete uniaxial compressive strength, a crucial parameter in construction and structural engineering. The dataset comprises experimental records for mixed-design concrete, and models were developed and optimized for predictive accuracy. The results show that the CNN model consistently outperformed GRU and LSTM. Hyperparameter tuning and regularization techniques further improved model performance. This research offers practical solutions for material property prediction in the construction industry, potentially reducing resource burdens and enhancing efficiency and construction quality.

Convolutional neural network-based classification and monitoring models for lung cancer detection: 3D perspective approach

Recent developments in technology and research have offered a wide variety of new techniques for image and data analysis within the medical field. Medical research helps doctors and researchers acquire not only knowledge about health and new diseases, but also techniques of prevention and treatment. In particular, radiomic analysis is mainly used to extract quantitative data from medical images and to build a model strong enough to diagnose focal diseases. However, finding a model capable to fit all patient situations is not an easy task. In this paper frame prediction models and classification models are reported in order to predict the evolution of a given data series and determine whether an anomaly exists or not. This article also shows how to build and make use of a convolutional neural network-based architecture aiming to accomplish prediction task for medical images, not only using common computer tomography scans, but also 3D volumes.

CTCN: a novel credit card fraud detection method based on Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Networks and Temporal Convolutional Network

Credit card fraud can lead to significant financial losses for both individuals and financial institutions. In this article, we propose a novel method called CTCN, which uses Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Networks (CTGAN) and temporal convolutional network (TCN) for credit card fraud detection. Our approach includes an oversampling algorithm that uses CTGAN to balance the dataset, and Neighborhood Cleaning Rule (NCL) to filter out majority class samples that overlap with the minority class. We generate synthetic minority class samples that conform to the original data distribution, resulting in a balanced dataset. We then employ TCN to analyze transaction sequences and capture long-term dependencies between data, revealing potential relationships between transaction sequences, thus achieving accurate credit card fraud detection. Experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms current machine learning and deep learning methods, as measured by recall, F1-Score, and AUC-ROC.

Recent development of piezoelectric biosensors for physiological signal detection and machine learning assisted cardiovascular disease diagnosis

As cardiovascular disease stands as a global primary cause of mortality, there has been an urgent need for continuous and real-time heart monitoring to effectively identify irregular heart rhythms and to offer timely patient alerts. However, conventional cardiac monitoring systems encounter challenges due to inflexible interfaces and discomfort during prolonged monitoring. In this review article, we address these issues by emphasizing the recent development of the flexible, wearable, and comfortable piezoelectric passive sensor assisted by machine learning technology for diagnosis. This innovative device not only harmonizes with the dynamic mechanical properties of human skin but also facilitates continuous and real-time collection of physiological signals. Addressing identified challenges and constraints, this review provides insights into recent advances in piezoelectric cardiac sensors, from devices to circuit systems. Furthermore, this review delves into the integration of machine learning technologies, showcasing their pivotal role in facilitating continuous and real-time assessment of cardiac status. The synergistic combination of flexible piezoelectric sensor design and machine learning holds substantial potential in automating the detection of cardiac irregularities with minimal human intervention. This transformative approach has the power to revolutionize patient care paradigms.

Hybrid deep learning model with enhanced sunflower optimization for flood and earthquake detection

Natural catastrophes may strike anywhere at any moment and cause widespread destruction. Most people do not have the necessary catastrophe preparedness knowledge or awareness. The combination of a flood and an earthquake can cause widespread destruction. Natural catastrophes have a domino effect on a country's economy, first by damaging infrastructure and then by taking human lives and other resources. The mortality tolls of both humans and animals have decreased as a result of recent natural disasters. So, we need a mechanism to identify and monitor floods and earthquakes. The suggested system uses a hybrid deep learning analysis to keep an eye on earthquake- and flood-affected areas. In order to boost the efficiency of the presented model, this research presents the improved sunflower optimisation (ESFO). In polynomial time, it determines the best time to schedule events. In view of the need for real-time monitoring of regions vulnerable to flooding and earthquakes, as well as the associated costs and precautions, this study focuses on systems. The suggested technology also sends a notification to the proper authorities whenever a person is detected in the area. In the event of an emergency, it can be used as a backup source of solar power. We then offer the best suitable depth and enable real-time earthquake detection with reduced false alarm rates through practical evaluation. Finally, we demonstrate that the projected model can be successfully deployed in a real-world, dynamic situation after being trained on a range of datasets.

Nested ensemble selection: An effective hybrid feature selection method

It has been shown that while feature selection algorithms are able to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant features, they fail to differentiate between relevant and redundant and correlated features. To address this issue, we propose a highly effective approach, called Nested Ensemble Selection (NES), that is based on a combination of filter and wrapper methods. The proposed feature selection algorithm differs from the existing filter-wrapper hybrid methods in its simplicity and efficiency as well as precision. The new algorithm is able to separate the relevant variables from the irrelevant as well as the redundant and correlated features. Furthermore, we provide a robust heuristic for identifying the optimal number of selected features which remains one of the greatest challenges in feature selection. Numerical experiments on synthetic and real-life data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The NES algorithm achieves perfect precision on the synthetic data and near optimal accuracy on the real-life data. The proposed method is compared against several popular algorithms including mRMR, Boruta, genetic, recursive feature elimination, Lasso, and Elastic Net. The results show that NES significantly outperforms the benchmarks algorithms especially on multi-class datasets.

A lightweight CORONA-NET for COVID-19 detection in X-ray images

Since December 2019, COVID-19 has posed the most serious threat to living beings. With the advancement of vaccination programs around the globe, the need to quickly diagnose COVID-19 in general with little logistics is fore important. As a consequence, the fastest diagnostic option to stop COVID-19 from spreading, especially among senior patients, should be the development of an automated detection system. This study aims to provide a lightweight deep learning method that incorporates a convolutional neural network (CNN), discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and a long short-term memory (LSTM), called CORONA-NET for diagnosing COVID-19 from chest X-ray images. In this system, deep feature extraction is performed by CNN, the feature vector is reduced yet strengthened by DWT, and the extracted feature is detected by LSTM for prediction. The dataset included 3000 X-rays, 1000 of which were COVID-19 obtained locally. Within minutes of the test, the proposed test platform's prototype can accurately detect COVID-19 patients. The proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in comparison with the existing deep learning methods. We hope that the suggested method will hasten clinical diagnosis and may be used for patients in remote areas where clinical labs are not easily accessible due to a lack of resources, location, or other factors.

A new alpha logarithmic-generated class to model precipitation data with theory and inference

Precipitation, or rainfall, is a central feature of the weather cycle and plays a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. However, existing models such as the Poisson, exponential, normal, log-normal, generalized Pareto, gamma, generalized extreme value, lognormal, beta, Gumbel, Weibull, and Pearson type III distributions used for predicting precipitation are often inadequate for precisely representing the complex pattern of rainfall. This study proposes a novel and innovative approach to address these limitations through the new alpha logarithmic-generated (NAL-G) class of distributions. The study authors thoroughly examine the NAL-G class and a unique model, the NAL-Exponential (NAL-Exp) distribution, with a focus on analyzing mathematical properties such as moments, quantile function, entropy, order statistics, and more. Six recognized classical estimation methods are employed, and extensive simulations are conducted to determine the best one. The NAL-Exp distribution demonstrates its high adaptability and value through its superior performance in modeling four distinct rainfall data sets. The results show that the NAL-Exp distribution outperforms other commonly used distribution models, highlighting its potential as a valuable tool in hydrological modeling and analysis. The increased versatility and flexibility of this new approach hold great potential for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of future rainfall predictions.

Hybrid black widow optimization with iterated greedy algorithm for gene selection problems

Gene Selection (GS) is a strategy method targeted at reducing redundancy, limited expressiveness, and low informativeness in gene expression datasets obtained by DNA Microarray technology. These datasets contain a plethora of diverse and high-dimensional samples and genes, with a significant discrepancy in the number of samples and genes present. The complexities of GS are especially noticeable in the context of microarray expression data analysis, owing to the inherent data imbalance. The main goal of this study is to offer a simplified and computationally effective approach to dealing with the conundrum of attribute selection in microarray gene expression data. We use the Black Widow Optimization algorithm (BWO) in the context of GS to achieve this, using two unique methodologies: the unaltered BWO variation and the hybridized BWO variant combined with the Iterated Greedy algorithm (BWO-IG). By improving the local search capabilities of BWO, this hybridization attempts to promote more efficient gene selection. A series of tests was carried out using nine benchmark datasets that were obtained from the gene expression data repository in the pursuit of empirical validation. The results of these tests conclusively show that the BWO-IG technique performs better than the traditional BWO algorithm. Notably, the hybridized BWO-IG technique excels in the efficiency of local searches, making it easier to identify relevant genes and producing findings with higher levels of reliability in terms of accuracy and the degree of gene pruning. Additionally, a comparison analysis is done against five modern wrapper Feature Selection (FS) methodologies, namely BIMFOHHO, BMFO, BHHO, BCS, and BBA, in order to put the suggested BWO-IG method's effectiveness into context. The comparison that follows highlights BWO-IG's obvious superiority in reducing the number of selected genes while also obtaining remarkably high classification accuracy. The key findings were an average classification accuracy of 94.426, average fitness values of 0.061, and an average number of selected genes of 2933.767.

Brain-computer interface: trend, challenges, and threats

Brain-computer interface (BCI), an emerging technology that facilitates communication between brain and computer, has attracted a great deal of research in recent years. Researchers provide experimental results demonstrating that BCI can restore the capabilities of physically challenged people, hence improving the quality of their lives. BCI has revolutionized and positively impacted several industries, including entertainment and gaming, automation and control, education, neuromarketing, and neuroergonomics. Notwithstanding its broad range of applications, the global trend of BCI remains lightly discussed in the literature. Understanding the trend may inform researchers and practitioners on the direction of the field, and on where they should invest their efforts more. Noting this significance, we have analyzed 25,336 metadata of BCI publications from Scopus to determine advancement of the field. The analysis shows an exponential growth of BCI publications in China from 2019 onwards, exceeding those from the United States that started to decline during the same period. Implications and reasons for this trend are discussed. Furthermore, we have extensively discussed challenges and threats limiting exploitation of BCI capabilities. A typical BCI architecture is hypothesized to address two prominent BCI threats, privacy and security, as an attempt to make the technology commercially viable to the society.

A fine-tuned YOLOv5 deep learning approach for real-time house number detection

Detection of small objects in natural scene images is a complicated problem due to the blur and depth found in the images. Detecting house numbers from the natural scene images in real-time is a computer vision problem. On the other hand, convolutional neural network (CNN) based deep learning methods have been widely used in object detection in recent years. In this study, firstly, a classical CNN-based approach is used to detect house numbers with locations from natural images in real-time. Faster R-CNN, MobileNet, YOLOv4, YOLOv5 and YOLOv7, among the commonly used CNN models, models were applied. However, satisfactory results could not be obtained due to the small size and variable depth of the door plate objects. A new approach using the fine-tuning technique is proposed to improve the performance of CNN-based deep learning models. Experimental evaluations were made on real data from Kayseri province. Classic Faster R-CNN, MobileNet, YOLOv4, YOLOv5 and YOLOv7 methods yield f1 scores of 0.763, 0.677, 0.880, 0.943 and 0.842, respectively. The proposed fine-tuned Faster R-CNN, MobileNet, YOLOv4, YOLOv5, and YOLOv7 approaches achieved f1 scores of 0.845, 0.775, 0.932, 0.972 and 0.889, respectively. Thanks to the proposed fine-tuned approach, the f1 score of all models has increased. Regarding the run time of the methods, classic Faster R-CNN detects 0.603 seconds, while fine-tuned Faster R-CNN detects 0.633 seconds. Classic MobileNet detects 0.046 seconds, while fine-tuned MobileNet detects 0.048 seconds. Classic YOLOv4 and fine-tuned YOLOv4 detect 0.235 and 0.240 seconds, respectively. Classic YOLOv5 and fine-tuned YOLOv5 detect 0.015 seconds, and classic YOLOv7 and fine-tuned YOLOv7 detect objects in 0.009 seconds. While the YOLOv7 model was the fastest running model with an average running time of 0.009 seconds, the proposed fine-tuned YOLOv5 approach achieved the highest performance with an f1 score of 0.972.

Comparison of Machine-Learning and Deep-Learning Methods for the Prediction of Osteoradionecrosis Resulting From Head and Neck Cancer Radiation Therapy

Purpose

Deep-learning (DL) techniques have been successful in disease-prediction tasks and could improve the prediction of mandible osteoradionecrosis (ORN) resulting from head and neck cancer (HNC) radiation therapy. In this study, we retrospectively compared the performance of DL algorithms and traditional machine-learning (ML) techniques to predict mandible ORN binary outcome in an extensive cohort of patients with HNC.

Methods and Materials

Patients who received HNC radiation therapy at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2005 to 2015 were identified for the ML (n = 1259) and DL (n = 1236) studies. The subjects were followed for ORN development for at least 12 months, with 173 developing ORN and 1086 having no evidence of ORN. The ML models used dose-volume histogram parameters to predict ORN development. These models included logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, and a random classifier reference. The DL models were based on ResNet, DenseNet, and autoencoder-based architectures. The DL models used each participant's dose cropped to the mandible. The effect of increasing the amount of available training data on the DL models' prediction performance was evaluated by training the DL models using increasing ratios of the original training data.

Results

The F1 score for the logistic regression model, the best-performing ML model, was 0.3. The best-performing ResNet, DenseNet, and autoencoder-based models had F1 scores of 0.07, 0.14, and 0.23, respectively, whereas the random classifier's F1 score was 0.17. No performance increase was apparent when we increased the amount of training data available for DL model training.

Conclusions

The ML models had superior performance to their DL counterparts. The lack of improvement in DL performance with increased training data suggests that either more data are needed for appropriate DL model construction or that the image features used in DL models are not suitable for this task.

The process of supply chain reformation and activities linked to food recalls during food safety issues are insanely expensive and challenging. Traceability-driven food supply chain management is likely to implement novel technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT). The capability of the Blockchain era within the food sector is emerging with use cases across different regions, as shown via the growing number of studies. Credibility, efficiency, and safety are all improved when food products can be instantly traced from their point of origin through all points of contact on their way to the consumer. Blockchain assures a tamper-proof and transparent system that allows an innovative business solution, together with smart contracts. However, there are significant difficulties with the implementation of blockchain technology for food traceability. It necessitates more and more training platforms as well as trainers, who can make understanding and operability of this technology easy among ground-level participants and food entities. For the tactical application of this technology, it is essential to comprehend the legal and regulatory framework.

Person Recognition Based on Deep Gait: A Survey

Gait recognition, also known as walking pattern recognition, has expressed deep interest in the computer vision and biometrics community due to its potential to identify individuals from a distance. It has attracted increasing attention due to its potential applications and non-invasive nature. Since 2014, deep learning approaches have shown promising results in gait recognition by automatically extracting features. However, recognizing gait accurately is challenging due to the covariate factors, complexity and variability of environments, and human body representations. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements made in this field along with the challenges and limitations associated with deep learning methods. For that, it initially examines the various gait datasets used in the literature review and analyzes the performance of state-of-the-art techniques. After that, a taxonomy of deep learning methods is presented to characterize and organize the research landscape in this field. Furthermore, the taxonomy highlights the basic limitations of deep learning methods in the context of gait recognition. The paper is concluded by focusing on the present challenges and suggesting several research directions to improve the performance of gait recognition in the future.

Prediction of postpartum hemorrhage using traditional statistical analysis and a machine learning approach

BACKGROUND

Early detection of postpartum hemorrhage risk factors by healthcare providers during pregnancy and the postpartum period may allow healthcare providers to act to prevent it. Developing a prediction model that incorporates several risk factors and accurately calculates the overall risk for postpartum hemorrhage is necessary.

OBJECTIVE

This study used a traditional analytical approach and a machine learning model to predict postpartum hemorrhage.

STUDY DESIGN

Women who gave birth at the Khaleej-e-Fars Hospital in Bandar Abbas, Iran, were evaluated retrospectively between January 1, 2020, and January 1, 2022. These pregnant women were divided into 2 groups, namely those who had postpartum hemorrhage and those who did not. We used 2 approaches for the analysis. At the first level, we used the traditional analysis methods. Demographic factors, maternal comorbidities, and obstetrical factors were compared between the 2 groups. A bivariate logistic regression analysis of the risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage was done to estimate the crude odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals. In the second level, we used machine learning approaches to predict postpartum hemorrhage.

RESULTS

Of the 8888 deliveries, we identified 163 women with recorded postpartum hemorrhage, giving a frequency of 1.8%. According to a traditional analysis, factors associated with an increased risk for postpartum hemorrhage in a bivariate logistic regression analysis were living in a rural area (odds ratio, 1.41; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.98); primiparity (odds ratio, 3.16; 95% confidence interval, 1.90-4.75); mild to moderate anemia (odds ratio, 5.94; 95% confidence interval 2.81-8.34); severe anemia (odds ratio, 6.01; 95% confidence interval 3.89-11.09); abnormal placentation (odds ratio, 7.66; 95% confidence interval, 2.81-17.34); fetal macrosomia (odds ratio, 8.14; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-14.47); shoulder dystocia (odds ratio, 7.88; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-13.99); vacuum delivery (odds ratio, 2.01; 95% confidence interval, 1.15-5.98); cesarean delivery (odds ratio, 1.86; 95% confidence interval, 1.12-3.79); and general anesthesia during cesarean delivery (odds ratio, 7.66; 95 % confidence interval, 3.11-9.36). According to machine learning analysis, the top 5 algorithms were XGBoost regression (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 99%), XGBoost classification (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 98%), LightGBM (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 94%), random forest regression (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 86%), and linear regression (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 78%). However, after considering all performance parameters, the XGBoost classification was found to be the best model to predict postpartum hemorrhage. The importance of the variables in the linear regression model, similar to traditional analysis methods, revealed that macrosomia, general anesthesia, anemia, shoulder dystocia, and abnormal placentation were considered to be weighted factors, whereas XGBoost classification considered living residency, parity, cesarean delivery, education, and induced labor to be weighted factors.

CONCLUSION

Risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage can be identified using traditional statistical analysis and a machine learning model. Machine learning models were a credible approach for improving postpartum hemorrhage prediction with high accuracy. More research should be conducted to analyze appropriate variables and prepare big data to determine the best model.

Pre-training via Transfer Learning and Pretext Learning a Convolutional Neural Network for Automated Assessments of Clinical PET Image Quality

Positron emission tomography (PET) using a fraction of the usual injected dose would reduce the amount of radioligand needed, as well as the radiation dose to patients and staff, but would compromise reconstructed image quality. For performing the same clinical tasks with such images, a clinical (rather than numerical) image quality assessment is essential. This process can be automated with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, the scarcity of clinical quality readings is a challenge. We hypothesise that exploiting easily available quantitative information in pretext learning tasks or using established pre-trained networks could improve CNN performance for predicting clinical assessments with limited data. CNNs were pre-trained to predict injected dose from image patches extracted from eight real patient datasets, reconstructed using between 0.5%-100% of the available data. Transfer learning with seven different patients was used to predict three clinically-scored quality metrics ranging from 0-3: global quality rating, pattern recognition and diagnostic confidence. This was compared to pre-training via a VGG16 network at varying pre-training levels. Pre-training improved test performance for this task: the mean absolute error of 0.53 (compared to 0.87 without pre-training), was within clinical scoring uncertainty. Future work may include using the CNN for novel reconstruction methods performance assessment.

Model-based and model-free deep features fusion for high performed human gait recognition

In the last decade, the need for a non-contact biometric model for recognizing candidates has increased, especially after the pandemic of COVID-19 appeared and spread worldwide. This paper presents a novel deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that guarantees quick, safe, and precise human authentication via their poses and walking style. The concatenated fusion between the proposed CNN and a fully connected model has been formulated, utilized, and tested. The proposed CNN extracts the human features from two main sources: (1) human silhouette images according to model-free and (2) human joints, limbs, and static joint distances according to a model-based via a novel, fully connected deep-layer structure. The most commonly used dataset, CASIA gait families, has been utilized and tested. Numerous performance metrics have been evaluated to measure the system quality, including accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, false negative rate, and training time. Experimental results reveal that the proposed model can enhance recognition performance in a superior manner compared with the latest state-of-the-art studies. Moreover, the suggested system introduces a robust real-time authentication with any covariate conditions, scoring 99.8% and 99.6% accuracy in identifying casia (B) and casia (A) datasets, respectively.

COVID-19 advising application development for Apple devices (iOS)

One of humanity's most devastating health crises was COVID-19. Billions of people suffered during this pandemic. In comparison with previous global pandemics that have been faced by the world before, societies were more accurate with the technical support system during this natural disaster. The intersection of data from healthcare units and the analysis of this data into various sophisticated systems were critical factors. Different healthcare units have taken special consideration to advance technical inputs to fight against such situations. The field of natural language processing (NLP) has dramatically supported this. Despite the primitive methods for monitoring the bio-metric factors of a person, the use of cognitive science has emerged as one of the most critical features during this pandemic era. One of the essential features is the potential to understand the data based on various texts and user inputs. The deployment of various NLP systems is one of the most challenging factors in handling the bulk amount of data flowing from multiple sources. This study focused on developing a powerful application to advise patients suffering from ailments related to COVID-19. The use of NLP refers to facilitating a user to identify the present critical situation and make necessary decisions while getting infected. This article also summarises the challenges associated with NLP and its usage for future NLP-based applications focusing on healthcare units. There are a couple of applications that reside for android-based systems as well as web-based chat-bot systems. In terms of security and safety, application development for iOS is more advanced. This study also explains the block meant of an application for advising COVID-19 infection. A natural language processing powered application for an iOS operating system is indeed one of its kind, which will help people who need to advise proper guidance. The article also portrays NLP-based application development for healthcare problems associated with personal reporting systems.

Advancement of Management Information System for Discovering Fraud in Master Card based Intelligent Supervised Machine Learning and Deep Learning during SARS-CoV2

During coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) the number of fraudulent transactions is expanding at a rate of alarming (7352421 online transaction records). Additionally, the Master Card (MC) usage is increasing. To avoid massive losses, companies of finance must constantly improve their management information systems for discovering fraud in MC. In this paper, an approach of advancement management information system for discovering of MC fraud was developed using sequential modeling of data depend on intelligent forecasting methods such as deep Learning and intelligent supervised machine learning (ISML). The Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM), Logistic Regression (LR), and Random Forest (RF) were used. The dataset is separated into two parts: the training and testing data, with a ratio of 8:2. Also, the advancement of management information system has been evaluated using 10-fold cross validation depend on recall, f1-score, precision, Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Receiver Operating Curve (ROC), and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). Finally various techniques of resampling used to forecast if a transaction of MC is genuine/fraudulent. Performance for without re-sampling, with under-sampling, and with over-sampling is measured for each Algorithm. Highest performance of without re-sampling was 0.829 for RF algorithm-F score. While for under-sampling, it was 0.871 for LSTM algorithm-RMSE. Further, for over-sampling, it was 0.921 for both RF algorithm-Precision and LSTM algorithm-F score. The results from running advancement of management information system revealed that using resampling technique with deep learning LSTM generated the best results than intelligent supervised machine learning.

Epi-DNNs: Epidemiological priors informed deep neural networks for modeling COVID-19 dynamics

Differential equations-based epidemic compartmental models and deep neural networks-based artificial intelligence (AI) models are powerful tools for analyzing and fighting the transmission of COVID-19. However, the capability of compartmental models is limited by the challenges of parameter estimation, while AI models fail to discover the evolutionary pattern of COVID-19 and lack explainability. This paper aims to provide a novel method (called Epi-DNNs) by integrating compartmental models and deep neural networks (DNNs) to model the complex dynamics of COVID-19. In the proposed Epi-DNNs method, the neural network is designed to express the unknown parameters in the compartmental model and the Runge–Kutta method is implemented to solve the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) so as to give the values of the ODEs at a given time. Specifically, the discrepancy between predictions and observations is incorporated into the loss function, then the defined loss is minimized and applied to identify the best-fitted parameters governing the compartmental model. Furthermore, we verify the performance of Epi-DNNs on the real-world reported COVID-19 data on the Omicron epidemic in Shanghai covering February 25 to May 27, 2022. The experimental findings on the synthesized data have revealed its effectiveness in COVID-19 transmission modeling. Moreover, the inferred parameters from the proposed Epi-DNNs method yield a predictive compartmental model, which can serve to forecast future dynamics.

ECG-NETS – A novel integration of capsule networks and extreme gated recurrent neural network for IoT based human activity recognition

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has reached its new dimension with the support of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). To observe human activities, motion sensors like accelerometer or gyroscope can be integrated with microcontrollers to collect all the inputs and send to the cloud with the help of IoT transceivers. These inputs give the characteristics such as, angular velocity of movements, acceleration and apply them for an effective HAR. But reaching high recognition rate with less complicated computational overhead still represents a problem in the research. To solve this aforementioned issue, this work proposes a novel ensembling of Capsule Networks (CN) and modified Gated Recurrent Units (MGRU) with Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) for an effective HAR classification based on data collected using IoT systems called Ensemble Capsule Gated (ECG)-Networks (NETS). The proposed system uses Capsule networks for spatio-feature extraction and modified (Gated Recurrent Unit) GRU for temporal feature extraction. The powerful feed forward training networks are then employed to train these features for human activity recognition. The proposed model is validated on real time IoT data and WISDM datasets. Experimental results demonstrates that proposed model achieves better results comparatively higher than existing (Deep Learning) DL models.

A two-stage intrusion detection method based on light gradient boosting machine and autoencoder

Intrusion detection systems can detect potential attacks and raise alerts on time. However, dimensionality curses and zero-day attacks pose challenges to intrusion detection systems. From a data perspective, the dimensionality curse leads to the low efficiency of intrusion detection systems. From the attack perspective, the increasing number of zero-day attacks overwhelms the intrusion detection system. To address these problems, this paper proposes a novel detection framework based on light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) and autoencoder. The recursive feature elimination (RFE) method is first used for dimensionality reduction in this framework. Then a focal loss (FL) function is introduced into the LightGBM classifier to boost the learning of difficult samples. Finally, a two-stage prediction step with LightGBM and autoencoder is performed. In the first stage, pre-decision is conducted with LightGBM. In the second stage, a residual is used to make a secondary decision for samples with a normal class. The experiments were performed on the NSL-KDD and UNSWNB15 datasets, and compared with the classical method. It was found that the proposed method is superior to other methods and reduces the time overhead. In addition, the existing advanced methods were also compared in this study, and the results show that the proposed method is above 90% for accuracy, recall, and F1 score on both datasets. It is further concluded that our method is valid when compared with other advanced techniques.

Rapid diagnosis of Covid-19 infections by a progressively growing GAN and CNN optimisation

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Covid-19 infections are spreading around the globe since December 2019. Several diagnostic methods were developed based on biological investigations and the success of each method depends on the accuracy of identifying Covid infections. However, access to diagnostic tools can be limited, depending on geographic region and the diagnosis duration plays an important role in treating Covid-19. Since the virus causes pneumonia, its presence can also be detected using medical imaging by Radiologists. Hospitals with X-ray capabilities are widely distributed all over the world, so a method for diagnosing Covid-19 from chest X-rays would present itself. Studies have shown promising results in automatically detecting Covid-19 from medical images using supervised Artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms. The major drawback of supervised learning algorithms is that they require huge amounts of data to train. Also, the radiology equipment is not computationally efficient for deep neural networks. Therefore, we aim to develop a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based image augmentation to optimize the performance of custom, light, Convolutional networks used for the classification of Chest X-rays (CXR).

METHODS

A Progressively Growing Generative Adversarial Network (PGGAN) is used to generate synthetic and augmented data to supplement the dataset. We propose two novel CNN architectures to perform the Multi-class classification of Covid-19, healthy and pneumonia affected Chest X-rays. Comparisons have been drawn to the state of the art models and transfer learning methods to evaluate the superiority of the networks. All the models are trained using enhanced and augmented X-ray images and are compared based on classification metrics.

RESULTS

The proposed models had extremely high classification metrics with proposed Architectures having test accuracy of 98.78% and 99.2% respectively while having 40% lesser training parameters than their state of the art counterpart.

CONCLUSION

In the present study, a method based on artificial intelligence is proposed, leading to a rapid diagnostic tool for Covid infections based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The benefit will be a high accuracy of detection with up to 99% hit rate, a rapid diagnosis, and an accessible Covid identification method by chest X-ray images.

A survey on computer vision based human analysis in the COVID-19 era

The emergence of COVID-19 has had a global and profound impact, not only on society as a whole, but also on the lives of individuals. Various prevention measures were introduced around the world to limit the transmission of the disease, including face masks, mandates for social distancing and regular disinfection in public spaces, and the use of screening applications. These developments also triggered the need for novel and improved computer vision techniques capable of ( i ) providing support to the prevention measures through an automated analysis of visual data, on the one hand, and ( ii ) facilitating normal operation of existing vision-based services, such as biometric authentication schemes, on the other. Especially important here, are computer vision techniques that focus on the analysis of people and faces in visual data and have been affected the most by the partial occlusions introduced by the mandates for facial masks. Such computer vision based human analysis techniques include face and face-mask detection approaches, face recognition techniques, crowd counting solutions, age and expression estimation procedures, models for detecting face-hand interactions and many others, and have seen considerable attention over recent years. The goal of this survey is to provide an introduction to the problems induced by COVID-19 into such research and to present a comprehensive review of the work done in the computer vision based human analysis field. Particular attention is paid to the impact of facial masks on the performance of various methods and recent solutions to mitigate this problem. Additionally, a detailed review of existing datasets useful for the development and evaluation of methods for COVID-19 related applications is also provided. Finally, to help advance the field further, a discussion on the main open challenges and future research direction is given at the end of the survey. This work is intended to have a broad appeal and be useful not only for computer vision researchers but also the general public.

Prediction of the COVID-19 infectivity and the sustainable impact on public health under deep learning algorithm

The aim is to explore the development trend of COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019) and predict the infectivity of 2019-nCoV (2019 Novel Coronavirus), as well as its impact on public health. First, the existing data are analyzed through data pre-processing to extract useful feature factors. Then, the LSTM (Long-Short Term Memory) prediction model in the deep learning algorithm is used to predict the epidemic situation in Hubei Province, outside Hubei nationwide, and the whole country, respectively. Meanwhile, the impact of intervention time changes on the epidemic situation is compared. The results show that the prediction results are almost consistent with the actual values. Specifically, Hubei Province abolishes quarantine restrictions after the Spring Festival holiday, and the first COVID-19 peak is reached in late February, while the second COVID-19 peak has been reached in early March. Finally, the cumulative number of diagnoses reaches 85,000 cases, with an increase of 15,000 cases compared with the nationwide cases outside Hubei under the continuous implementation of prevention and control measures. Under the prediction of the proposed LSTM model, if the nationwide implementation of prevention and control interventions is postponed by 5 days, the epidemic will peak in early March, and the cumulative number of diagnoses will be about 200,000; and if the intervention measures are implemented five days earlier, the epidemic will peak in mid-February, with a cumulative number of diagnoses of approximately 40,000. Meanwhile, the proposed LSTM model predicts the RMSE values of the epidemic situation in Hubei Province, outside Hubei nationwide, and the whole country as 34.63, 75.42, and 50.27, respectively. Under model comparison analysis, the prediction error of the proposed LSTM model is small and has better applicability over similar algorithms. The results show that the LSTM model is effective and has high performance in infectious disease prediction, and the research results can provide scientific and effective references for subsequent related research.

Biserial targeted feature projection based radial kernel regressive deep belief neural learning for covid-19 prediction

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly infectious viral disease caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus. Different prediction techniques have been developed to predict the coronavirus disease's existence in patients. However, the accurate prediction was not improved and time consumption was not minimized. In order to address these existing problems, a novel technique called Biserial Targeted Feature Projection-based Radial Kernel Regressive Deep Belief Neural Learning (BTFP-RKRDBNL) is introduced to perform accurate disease prediction with lesser time consumption. The BTFP-RKRDBNL techniques perform disease prediction with the help of different layers such as two visible layers namely input and layer and two hidden layers. Initially, the features and data are collected from the dataset and transmitted to the input layer. The Point Biserial Correlative Target feature projection is used to select relevant features and other irrelevant features are removed with minimizing the disease prediction time. Then the relevant features are sent to the hidden layer 2. Next, Radial Kernel Regression is applied to analyze the training features and testing disease features to identify the disease with higher accuracy and a lesser false positive rate. Experimental analysis is planned to measure the prediction accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, and prediction time for different numbers of patients. The result illustrates that the method increases the prediction accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity by 10, 6, and 21% and reduces the prediction time by 10% as compared to state-of-the-art works.

Next generation insect taxonomic classification by comparing different deep learning algorithms

Insect taxonomy lies at the heart of many aspects of ecology, and identification tasks are challenging due to the enormous inter- and intraspecies variation of insects. Conventional methods used to study insect taxonomy are often tedious, time-consuming, labor intensive, and expensive, and recently, computer vision with deep learning algorithms has offered an alternative way to identify and classify insect images into their taxonomic levels. We designed the classification task according to the taxonomic ranks of insects-order, family, and genus-and compared the generalization of four state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architectures. The results show that different taxonomic ranks require different deep learning (DL) algorithms to generate high-performance models, which indicates that the design of an automated systematic classification pipeline requires the integration of different algorithms. The InceptionV3 model has advantages over other models due to its high performance in distinguishing insect order and family, which is having F1-score of 0.75 and 0.79, respectively. Referring to the performance per class, Hemiptera (order), Rhiniidae (family), and Lucilia (genus) had the lowest performance, and we discuss the possible rationale and suggest future works to improve the generalization of a DL model for taxonomic rank classification.

E-GCS: Detection of COVID-19 through classification by attention bottleneck residual network

BACKGROUND

Recently,  the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)  has caused mortality of many people globally. Thus, there existed a need to detect this disease to prevent its further spread. Hence, the study aims to predict COVID-19 infected patients based on deep learning (DL) and image processing.

OBJECTIVES

The study intends to classify the normal and abnormal cases of COVID-19 by considering three different medical imaging modalities namely ultrasound imaging, X-ray images and CT scan images through introduced attention bottleneck residual network (AB-ResNet). It also aims to segment the abnormal infected area from normal images for localizing localising the disease infected area through the proposed edge based graph cut segmentation (E-GCS).

METHODOLOGY

AB-ResNet is used for classifying images whereas E-GCS segment the abnormal images. The study possess various advantages as it rely on DL and possess capability for accelerating the training speed of deep networks. It also enhance the network depth leading to minimum parameters, minimising the impact of vanishing gradient issue and attaining effective network performance with respect to better accuracy.

RESULTS/CONCLUSION

Performance and comparative analysis is undertaken to evaluate the efficiency of the introduced system and results explores the efficiency of the proposed system in COVID-19 detection with high accuracy (99%).

Deep learning for Covid-19 forecasting: State-of-the-art review

The Covid-19 pandemic has galvanized scientists to apply machine learning methods to help combat the crisis. Despite the significant amount of research there exists no comprehensive survey devoted specifically to examining deep learning methods for Covid-19 forecasting. In this paper, we fill the gap in the literature by reviewing and analyzing the current studies that use deep learning for Covid-19 forecasting. In our review, all published papers and preprints, discoverable through Google Scholar, for the period from Apr 1, 2020 to Feb 20, 2022 which describe deep learning approaches to forecasting Covid-19 were considered. Our search identified 152 studies, of which 53 passed the initial quality screening and were included in our survey. We propose a model-based taxonomy to categorize the literature. We describe each model and highlight its performance. Finally, the deficiencies of the existing approaches are identified and the necessary improvements for future research are elucidated. The study provides a gateway for researchers who are interested in forecasting Covid-19 using deep learning.

Dual attention-based sequential auto-encoder for Covid-19 outbreak forecasting: A case study in Vietnam

For preventing the outbreaks of Covid-19 infection in different countries, many organizations and governments have extensively studied and applied different kinds of quarantine isolation policies, medical treatments as well as organized massive/fast vaccination strategy for over-18 citizens. There are several valuable lessons have been achieved in different countries this Covid-19 battle. These studies have presented the usefulness of prompt actions in testing, isolating confirmed infectious cases from community as well as social resource planning/optimization through data-driven anticipation. In recent times, many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of short/long-term forecasting in number of new Covid-19 cases in forms of time-series data. These predictions have directly supported to effectively optimize the available healthcare resources as well as imposing suitable policies for slowing down the Covid-19 spreads, especially in high-populated cities/regions/nations. There are several progresses of deep neural architectures, such as recurrent neural network (RNN) have demonstrated significant improvements in analyzing and learning the time-series datasets for conducting better predictions. However, most of recent RNN-based techniques are considered as unable to handle chaotic/non-smooth sequential datasets. The consecutive disturbances and lagged observations from chaotic time-series dataset like as routine Covid-19 confirmed cases have led to the low performance in temporal feature learning process through recent RNN-based models. To meet this challenge, in this paper, we proposed a novel dual attention-based sequential auto-encoding architecture, called as: DAttAE. Our proposed model supports to effectively learn and predict the new Covid-19 cases in forms of chaotic and non-smooth time series dataset. Specifically, the integration between dual self-attention mechanism in a given Bi-LSTM based auto-encoder in our proposed model supports to directly focus the model on a specific time-range sequence in order to achieve better prediction. We evaluated the performance of our proposed DAttAE model by comparing with multiple traditional and state-of-the-art deep learning-based techniques for time-series prediction task upon different real-world datasets. Experimental outputs demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed attention-based deep neural approach in comparing with state-of-the-art RNN-based architectures for time series based Covid-19 outbreak prediction task.

A Hybrid Model Based on Improved Transformer and Graph Convolutional Network for COVID-19 Forecasting

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly around the world since 2020, with a significant fatality rate. Until recently, numerous countries were unable to adequately control the pandemic. As a result, COVID-19 trend prediction has become a hot topic in academic circles. Both traditional models and existing deep learning (DL) models have the problem of low prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model based on an improved Transformer and graph convolution network (GCN) for COVID-19 forecasting. The salient feature of the model in this paper is that rich temporal sequence information is extracted by the multi-head attention mechanism, and then the correlation of temporal sequence information is further aggregated by GCN. In addition, to solve the problem of the high time complexity of the existing Transformer, we use the cosine function to replace the softmax calculation, so that the calculation of query, key and value can be split, and the time complexity is reduced from the original O(N2) to O(N). We only concentrated on three states in the United States, one of which was the most affected, one of which was the least affected, and one intermediate state, in order to make our predictions more meaningful. We use mean absolute percentage error and mean absolute error as evaluation indexes. The experimental results show that the proposed time series model has a better predictive performance than the current DL models and traditional models. Additionally, our model's convergence outperforms that of the current DL models, offering a more precise benchmark for the control of epidemics.

The COVID 19 pandemic, daily mobility and household welfare: Evidence from Tajikistan

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed severe restrictions on daily mobility for people globally. We use a monthly household panel dataset that covers a period both before and after the outbreak began to examine the impact of COVID-19 on daily mobility and household welfare in Tajikistan. The feature of our dataset is that it contains information on daily mobility for those traveling by vehicle along with their travel purposes. We provide several new findings. First, the impact of the pandemic on daily mobility was limited in Tajikistan, in contrast with the evidence from other countries. The pandemic discouraged motorized travel for family-related purposes in all income groups while keeping other vehicle travel intact for reasons such as work and shopping under the country's lenient travel restrictions. Second, the effects of concerns about the pandemic were not uniform across all vehicle travel when different purposes are taken into account. People who were very concerned about the pandemic were more likely to refrain from motorized travel for family-related purposes. Third, refraining from travel for family purposes exacerbated food insecurity, implying that the safety net provided by family members and relatives was hampered by the limited ability to travel during the pandemic.

A high-performance, hardware-based deep learning system for disease diagnosis

Modern deep learning schemes have shown human-level performance in the area of medical science. However, the implementation of deep learning algorithms on dedicated hardware remains a challenging task because modern algorithms and neuronal activation functions are generally not hardware-friendly and require a lot of resources. Recently, researchers have come up with some hardware-friendly activation functions that can yield high throughput and high accuracy at the same time. In this context, we propose a hardware-based neural network that can predict the presence of cancer in humans with 98.23% accuracy. This is done by making use of cost-efficient, highly accurate activation functions, Sqish and LogSQNL. Due to its inherently parallel components, the system can classify a given sample in just one clock cycle, i.e., 15.75 nanoseconds. Though this system is dedicated to cancer diagnosis, it can predict the presence of many other diseases such as those of the heart. This is because the system is reconfigurable and can be programmed to classify any sample into one of two classes. The proposed hardware system requires about 983 slice registers, 2,655 slice look-up tables, and only 1.1 kilobits of on-chip memory. The system can predict about 63.5 million cancer samples in a second and can perform about 20 giga-operations per second. The proposed system is about 5-16 times cheaper and at least four times speedier than other dedicated hardware systems using neural networks for classification tasks.

Machine learning approach for predicting production delays: a quarry company case study

Predictive maintenance employing machine learning techniques and big data analytics is a benefit to the industrial business in the Industry 4.0 era. Companies, on the other hand, have difficulties as they move from reactive to predictive manufacturing processes. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how data analytics and machine learning approaches may be utilized to predict production delays in a quarry firm as a case study. The dataset contains production records for six months, with a total of 20 columns for each production record for two machines. Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining approach is followed to build the machine learning models. Five predictive models were created using machine learning algorithms such as Decision Tree, Neural Network, Random Forest, Nave Bayes and Logistic Regression. The results show that Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network and Logistic Regression outperform other techniques and accurately predicts production delays with a F-measure score of 0.973. The quarry company's improved decision-making reducing potential production line delays demonstrates the value of this study.
