Current knowledge of burn injury first aid practices and applied traditional remedies: a nationwide survey

Differences in burn injury knowledge among reproductive-age women attending an urban and a semi-rural hospital in Northwest Nigeria: A cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

To assess burn injury knowledge and its predictors among reproductive-age women attending an urban and a semi-rural hospital in Northwest Nigeria DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study SETTING: It was conducted in the general and paediatric outpatient clinics of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano (urban setting) and the general outpatient, paediatric outpatient and antenatal clinics of Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu (semi-rural setting).

PARTICIPANT

In 2021, 362 women aged 18-44 years were randomly selected from clinic attendees over six weeks. Of them, 217 were from the urban hospital. Data regarding their sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge of burn injuries was collected using a pretested, semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire.

OUTCOME MEASURE

Knowledge of burn injuries RESULTS: About 83.4 %, 77.1 % and 77.6 % of respondents had adequate general, primary prevention and overall knowledge of burn injuries, respectively. Their mean overall knowledge score was 18.6 out of 24, but only 55.5 % had adequate first-aid knowledge. The study sites did not significantly differ in burns first-aid, prevention and overall knowledge scores. However, urban respondents were more ignorant about the cause of burns and knew that burn injuries could be fatal. More semi-rural respondents knew that flames and chemicals cause burn injuries. Predictors of overall knowledge were age, educational level, number of children in their household, previously seeing a burn-injured child, and primary source of burns-related information.

CONCLUSIONS

The proportion of respondents with adequate overall burn injury knowledge was high; however, knowledge gaps exist among them. Overall, their first-aid knowledge was relatively low. The urban and semi-rural respondents had no significant differences in first-aid, prevention, or overall knowledge of burn injuries. However, knowledge of the causes of burns and burn complications differed between the urban and semi-rural study locations. Therefore, the clinical settings of this study present opportunities for similar burn-related educational interventions.

Evaluating Burn First Aid Knowledge, Practices, and Confidence Levels Among the General Population in Aseer, Saudi Arabia

Background and objectives Burns represents a significant public health issue globally and in Saudi Arabia, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups. Prompt, evidence-based first aid improves outcomes. This study assessed burn first aid understanding, self-assurance, and information sources among Aseer Region residents. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to 386 individuals using a validated questionnaire, assessing understanding via a 10-item scale and confidence through Likert scales. Associations between variables were examined statistically. Results Most participants (85%; n=330) demonstrated poor first-aid comprehension, and only (1%; n=2) exhibited excellent knowledge. A history of burn exposure correlated with higher knowledge (p=0.039). The Internet was the primary information source (48%; n= 185). Confidence in assisting burn victims was generally low. Conclusions Significant gaps in foundational burn first aid knowledge were identified, necessitating targeted educational interventions disseminated via multiple modalities to strengthen emergency response and optimize outcomes in this region.

Domestic Accidents of Children in the Orodara District of Burkina Faso: Mothers' Knowledge of First-Aid Practices

First-aid practices after a domestic accident are not always known, especially in Africa. This study aimed to measure mothers' knowledge of emergency procedures and attitudes in the event of domestic accidents in children. We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Orodara health district, Kénédougou province, Burkina Faso, among mothers of children aged 0-14 years. The dependent variable was the mothers' knowledge of domestic accident first-aid practices, and the independent variables were the sociodemographic characteristics of the households and the mothers. Determinants were identified using linear regression with a threshold of 5%. A total of 798 mothers were surveyed. The mean knowledge score was 6.9 (standard deviation = 1.5) out of 19. Upon our multivariate analysis, the factors associated with the mothers' knowledge about first-aid practices were the mothers' age, the number of children under 14 years old living in the same household, the household size, the score for knowledge of non-recommended attitudes, the mothers' level of education, and the place of residence. This study showed that awareness campaigns, especially in rural areas, seem important in improving mothers' knowledge of first-aid practices in domestic accidents and, therefore, reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with domestic accidents.

Knowledge, attitude, and sources of information towards burn first aid among people referred to a burn centre in the north of Iran

Optimal management of burns begins with first aid from the first hours of injury. Adequate knowledge of how to perform first aid for burns can reduce the consequences of injury. Therefore, this study aims to determine the knowledge, attitude, and sources of information assessment towards burn First aid among people referred to a burn centre in the north of Iran. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to assess knowledge, attitude, and sources of information towards burn first aid among people referred to a burn centre in the north of Iran in 2023. In this survey, a convenience sampling method was adopted. The variables consisted of four items on socio-demographic information, 15 items on knowledge, ten items on attitude, and one item on sources of information related to burn First aid. A total of 371 individuals responded to the survey. The mean age of participants was 31.90 ± 8.49 years old. The mean score of the total knowledge of the participants in the research was 6.04 ± 3.05. There was a statistically significant relationship between the variables of age, sex, marital status, place of residence, level of education, and history of receiving first aid training with the participants' knowledge level. The average score of the total attitude of the participants was 44.08 ± 3.88. Out of 371 participants, 214 people (57.7%) had an average attitude, and 157 people (42.3%) had a good attitude towards burn first aid. There was a statistically significant relationship between place of residence, level of education, and history of receiving first aid training with the participants' attitudes in the research. In addition, the level of knowledge had a statistically significant relationship with the participants' attitude level in the research (p-value <0.001). The majority of participants have limited knowledge of burn first aid. This lack of knowledge could lead to severe consequences. Therefore, healthcare organizations should review and promote consistent guidelines for burn first aid to tackle and minimize the effect of this grave injury.

Assessment of Awareness and Practices Related to Burn Injury First Aid Among the General Public: Cross-Sectional Study in Taif, Saudi Arabia

Background Burn injuries can be highly traumatic and harmful, leading to significant mortality rates, extended hospital stays, deformity, and incapacity. In the long term, they may also result in rejection, social stigma, and psychiatric issues. This study aimed to estimate the awareness and practices related to burn injury first aid among the general public in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Methods This is an online cross-sectional survey in Taif, Saudi Arabia. An online self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the adult population, comprising individuals aged 18 years and older, of both genders, from June 2023 to August 2023. The questionnaire consisted of 24 questions divided into demographics and first aid for burns. The Scientific Research Ethics Committee at Taif University, Taif, Saudi Arabia, obtained the ethical approval for the study. Results A total of 531 individuals were included in the study. About half were male (58.4%) and in the age group of 22-29 years (52%). Out of that number, 24.1% were medical field students. About one-third of the respondents had participated in a burn training course (33.7%), and 73.8% reported experiencing a burn injury before, either to themselves or their family. Most respondents chose to treat the burn area using honey, and only 15.6% knew that they should administer water to a burn injury for 10 to 15 or >15 minutes. Most of the participants reported an excellent knowledge level (62.9%). Only 8.7% had an excellent practice level. The total knowledge and practice score was significantly associated with participation in the burn training course (P-value < 0.001 and 0.015, respectively). The work nature and prior experience with a burn injury were significantly associated with the knowledge scores (P-value=0.003, for both). Monthly income and the work nature also correlated with the practice total score (P-value=0.023 and <0.001, respectively). Conclusion Most participants had an excellent knowledge level, however, most of them reported poor or acceptable practice scores. It highlights the need for training sessions, awareness campaigns, and dissemination of evidence-based information to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice.

Outcome Evaluation of Burn Injury Management: A Study of Selective Traditional Home Remedies

Background Clinicians classify burns as epidermal, partial thickness (superficial and deep), or full thickness, according to the depth of tissue damage. Although skin is considered the largest organ in the human body, studies investigating burns, their types, and their management has revealed that the background knowledge of burn aid the community possesses remains unsatisfactory. Thus, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of various traditional home remedies, taking into account the type of burns and the nature of the remedies used from a cosmetic point of view. Materials and methods This is an original retrospective study conducted at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Jeddah from June through December 2022. Using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), eligible patients who met our inclusion criteria were invited to participate in the study after a review of their patient history, an assessment of basic vital signs, and a physical examination. Results Fifty-two participants met our inclusion criteria and successfully completed the study. A total of 80 wounds of varying severity in various locations were evaluated. Participants were divided into three categories according to VSS scores indicating good, intermediate, or poor healing. None of the eight cases treated with water resulted in poor healing. However, tomato paste resulted in poor healing for six cases (60%) but moderate and good healing for two cases (20%). Conclusion The safest and most effective initial management for burns among all the reviewed remedies was the application of cool running water, followed by seeking medical attention for evaluation and proper treatment, whereas tomato paste had a markedly poor effect.

Knowledge and Attitudes in First Aid Practices for Thermal Burns: a Cross-sectional Study Among Adults in Northern Greece

Background

Burns are a major cause of morbidity, including prolonged hospitalization, disfigurement, disability, and emotional trauma. Long-term absence from work and high healthcare costs for burn treatment have a significant socio-economic impact.

Objective

his study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge for burn management in the adult population of Thrace in Northern Greece and to determine factors associated with a better level of knowledge.

Methods

A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted οn a random sample of the adult population of Thrace. Data were collected using a structured pre-coded questionnaire, which included subjects' socio-demographic characteristics and the first aid practices for burns. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the effect of subjects' characteristics on their knowledge of burn first aid practices.

Results

A total of 711 subjects (49.6% males; mean age, 41.89±16.48 years) were included in the study. The incidence of a previous burn was 55.4%. Only 10.5% of the subjects would apply the optimal practice, consisting of rinsing the burn wound with cool running water for at least 10 minutes, applying only non-adhesive dressing on it and leaving the blisters intact. The optimal practice was independently associated with female gender (aOR=1.86, p=0.016), high education level (aOR=2.00, p=0.023), the presence of >3 children (aOR=2.27, p=0.009) and previous training in first aid (aOR=2.36, p=0.001). A large number of participants reported the application of toothpaste (38%), moisturizer (35.4%), aloe (31.8%) or yogurt (27.7%) to the burn surface.

Conclusion

Only a small proportion of the participants were aware of the optimal burn first aid practices, most of them female, of high socioeconomic status. We recommend a more targeted approach in the design of health campaigns in the future, in order to reach vulnerable parts of the population.

Perception, Awareness, and Practices Related to Burn First Aid Among the General Population in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to assess the perception, awareness, and practices related to burn first aid among the general population in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia.

METHODS

 This is an observational, cross-sectional study that assesses perception, awareness, and practices related to burn first aid among the general population in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The data was collected using questionnaires. The data was initially filtered and checked for completeness to rectify any errors or discrepancies. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for data analysis. The data was coded before entry into the software program. Descriptive statistics were applied, summarizing the data in terms of frequency and percentage. Chi-square tests were used for analyzing categorical variables and to determine the association between the groups, with significance set at a P-value of 0.05.

RESULTS

 Of the participants, 72.8% had previous knowledge regarding burns' first aid management. Furthermore, 3% obtained knowledge and information about burn first aid from a certified course, while 21.1% obtained the information from the Internet. Of the respondents, 77.8% indicated that during the exposure to burn, they would remove accessories and clothes that covered the injured area. Of them, 79.4% noted that they would apply water to the injured area in case of exposure to burns. In addition, 61.9% of the respondents used honey as a home remedy to treat burns, and 30.1% used toothpaste to treat burns.

CONCLUSION

Of the general population in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia, 72.8% had basic knowledge regarding burns' first aid management. The study found certified courses and the Internet to be the main sources of information and knowledge about burns' first aid management. The study found that clothes and accessories that covered the injured area should be removed when exposed to burns. In addition, cold water should be applied for a period of at least 10 minutes. The study found honey and toothpaste to be the most common home remedies used to treat burns. The use of pure honey is an accepted intervention in the treatment of burns due to its benefit in stimulating the rapid regeneration of tissues and decreasing incidences of scar formation. However, there are wrong beliefs about the use of toothpaste in cases of burns because it exacerbates the initial injury, making it even worse. There are significant differences in the perception, awareness, and practice of the general population according to their education level (P-value = 0.003) and employment (P-value = 0.007).

Assessing the Knowledge and Practices of Burn First Aid in Al-Baha Region, Saudi Arabia

Background Burns are a prevalent type of injury that can result in substantial morbidity and mortality. Burn first aid knowledge is essential for reducing its complications and improving outcomes. However, evidence of the amount of burn first aid knowledge among the general population in many nations is sparse. Methodology A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 346 persons over the age of 18 from the Al-Baha region of Saudi Arabia. The participants' knowledge of first aid for burns, including the appropriate steps to take in the event of a burn, the types of burns, and the proper application of burn dressings was assessed using a structured questionnaire. Results The majority of participants (73.6%) had inadequate knowledge of first aid for burns, while only 26.4% had adequate knowledge. The most common misconception among participants was the use of toothpaste, honey, or ice for burn treatment, which is not recommended. Additionally, hot water was the main cause of burning in this study. Conclusions This study underscores the necessity for targeted education and awareness-raising activities to improve the general population's knowledge and habits about first aid for burns. Such programs can be tailored to clarify myths and misunderstandings regarding burn treatment and encourage evidence-based strategies for preventing and treating burns.

Knowledge and Practice of Burn Management Among Physicians Using Burn Manikin in Ha'il, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Background Burn is a skin injury that results in the death of the impacted cells. Burn injuries are frequently unintentional and very avoidable. With proper management, the outcome is improved, and the need for surgical intervention is reduced. This article discusses healthcare providers' knowledge and practice of burn first aid and management to highlight the need for the enhanced practice of burn management and first-aid skills. Objective This study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of burn injuries management among healthcare workers in different specialties in Hail city. Methods  A cross-sectional study was conducted via an interviewer-administrated face-to-face questionnaire and video recording of a simulated case of burn injury collected from our skill lab at Hail University and evaluated by a board-certified plastic surgeon. Result The study analyzed 119 physicians (mean age = 36.3 years, SD = 6.7) managing burn cases. Of these, 59.7% were male, and 40.3% were female. The mean evaluation score was 7.71 (SD = 2.84). None of the factors studied, including gender (p = 0.353), age (p = 0.970), education level (p = 0.127), specialty (p = 0.871), professional experience (p = 0.118), working sector (p = 0.178), nationality (p = 0.742), or participation in burn management course (p = 0.131), had a significant effect on burn management skills of physicians. However, some groups had higher mean evaluation scores than others. Further research is needed to explore potential reasons for the observed differences in mean evaluation scores among different groups of physicians. Conclusion We discovered that most physicians were found to have poor practical knowledge of proper burn management, and most of them had not engaged in a burn first aid training, therefore more courses targeting physicians who may meet burn patients are required.

Evaluation of Perception, Awareness, and Practices Related to Burns First Aid: Largest Cross-Sectional Study Among Non-Healthcare Providers in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia

Introduction Burn injuries are among the most catastrophic public health issues because of the severe physical, functional, and psychological effects. Numerous studies have revealed that both developed and developing societies lack understanding about first aid for burns. This research sought to review and appraise perception, awareness, and practices of burn first aid among non-healthcare providers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and whether they need an effective program. To the best of our knowledge, this is likely the first research conducted in Jeddah. Methodology We conducted a cross-sectional study in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia using a self-administered online questionnaire among non-healthcare providers in July 2022. The questionnaire was made up of 29 questions divided into two sections: demographics and first aid for burns. The Unit of Biomedical Ethics Research Committee at the Faculty of Medicine, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia approved this study. Results This study included 575 participants. Males comprised 54.8% (315) and females 45.2% (260) of all respondents. A total of 443 respondents (77%) held a university diploma. All respondents had a mean burn knowledge score of 6.35±1.43 out of eight. Traditional medication was used on the burn by 484 people (84.2%). Antibiotic use in burn injuries was poorly understood as 453 (78.8%) of study participants agreed that antibiotics are beneficial in the case of burns, which is incorrect. Conclusion The level of first-aid practices for burn patients among non-healthcare workers was insufficient, and the use of traditional medicines and antibiotics in burn patients was excessive. The findings of this study should be carefully considered by various healthcare organizations.

Knowledge, attitude, and practice towards burn first aid and its associated factors among caregivers attending burn units in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study

Background

Burn injuries are thought to be preventable but are still a prevalent global health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. It continues to remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Proper knowledge about burn first aid minimizes the overall impact of the injury.

Purpose

This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward burn first aid and its associated factors among caregivers attending burn units in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2021/22.

Methods

A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among caregivers of burn patients attending Yekatit 12 hospital medical college and Addis Ababa Burn Emergency and Trauma (AaBET) hospital burn units. A total of 305 caregivers were recruited by a simple random sampling method from both hospitals. Data was collected using a standard interviewer-administrated questionnaire, cleaned, coded, and entered into EPI data version 6, and then exported to SPSS version 26 for further analysis. The generated data were compiled by frequency tables, charts, and graphs. A logistic regression model was used to measure the association between independent versus outcome variables, considering the AOR, 95% CI, and p < 0.05 as significant for all the independent variables.

Result

A total of 305 participants responded to this study. Among these, the majority, 185(60.7%) of caregivers were females, while 120(39.3%) were Males. The main source of knowledge for those who had previous information on a burn and its first aid treatment were families, friends, colleagues, and guardians. A significant portion of 246(80.7%) respondents did not take any form of burn first aid training. The study indicates that 202(66.2%) and 195(63.9%) of the study participants have poor knowledge and practice, respectively, despite the majority. 225(73.8%) of responders have a favorable attitude regarding burn first aid.

Conclusion and recommendation

This study showed an explicit knowledge and practice gap among caregivers towards burn first aid even though the majorities have a favorable attitude. Developing an effective nationwide burn prevention program and early burn first aid treatment in Ethiopia and promoting a consistent guideline for burn first aid.

Primary care patients' perspectives on the use of non-pharmacological home remedies in Geneva: a cross-sectional study

Background

Home remedies are anchored in patients’ everyday life, but their use in Western cultures remains scarcely explored. Our objectives were to investigate primary care patients’ perspectives and use of non-pharmacological home remedies in Geneva (Switzerland).

Methods

In spring 2020, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among adult primary care patients in randomly selected general practices (N = 15). Patients were recruited in the waiting rooms and asked to complete a questionnaire about their sociodemographic characteristics, their home remedy use, and their expectations and reasons for using (or not using) home remedies. We employed descriptive statistics to summarise the data and logistic regression adjusted for clustering within practices to explore associations between home remedy use and participants’ sociodemographic characteristics.

Results

Three hundred fourteen of three hundred ninety patients agreed to participate in the study (participation rate 80.5%). Home remedies were used by 64.4% of patients. The main reasons given were for preventive purposes (55.3%), self-care (41.0%), as an alternative to conventional medicine (40.5%) and to avoid or delay a medical consultation (38.5%). One-third of patients considered that it was the GP’s role to spontaneously inform them about home remedies (36.4%), another third considered that it was the GP’s role to inform them, but only upon specific request (32.3%), and the last third of patients declared that it was not the GP’s role to provide information about home remedies (30.3%). Patients living in an urban zone (adjusted OR 2.1; 95%CI 1.0–4.4; p 0.05) and those with a tertiary education background (adjusted OR 1.9; 95%CI 1.0–3.6; p 0.05) believed that it was their GP’s role to inform them about home remedies.

Conclusions

Home remedies are used by a majority of primary care patients in Geneva. For a comprehensive and safe healthcare management in the context of patient-oriented medicine, more evidence-based research on efficacy and safety of home remedies as well as their place in primary care consultation is required.

Paediatric burn injuries in Enugu, South-East Nigeria: A 7-year multi-centre retrospective review

Burn injuries contribute significantly to childhood morbidity and mortality. This study was designed to document the pattern of presentation and outcome of pediatric burn injury in Enugu.

METHODS

All children with burn injuries over a 7-year period (June 2011 to May 2018) and were managed at three tertiary health institutions, were studied. Information including their socio-demographics, clinical features and treatment outcome were obtained and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0.

RESULTS

198 out of 201 records were available for analysis. Most (186; 93.9%) burn injuries occurred at home. Hot liquid (112; 56.7%) was the commonest cause of burn injury. A lot of substances were used topically for first aid, raw eggs (52; 31%) being the commonest. The outcome had significant association with cause of injury, depth of injury, total burn surface area (TBSA), and inhalation injury. Most were safely discharged home while a total of thirteen (6.6%) children died. LA₅₀ was 54.87%, while the maximum TBSA salvaged was 65%.

CONCLUSION

Burn injuries in children in this environment remain a serious challenge in the face of widespread lack of awareness regarding safe practices in handling hot and flammable items at home.

Epidemiology, aetiology and knowledge, attitudes, and practices relating to burn injuries in Palestine: A community-level research

The aim of this study was to identify the epidemiology, aetiology as well as the knowledge, attitudes, and practices relating to burn injuries in Palestine. A mixed‐method approach was used. A survey was distributed to a total of 1500 households selected by randomised approach. The survey was standardised based on World Health Organisation's guidelines for conducting community surveys on injury. Additionally, there were 12 focus group discussions and 10 key informant interviews to collect rich qualitative data. In the West Bank and Gaza, 1.5% of Palestinians had experienced serious burn injuries in the 12 months. The total sample of 1500 yields a margin of error (plus/minus) = 2.5% at a 95% level of confidence and a response distribution (P = 50%) with 3% non‐response rate. Of the 1500 households approached, 184 reported a total of 196 burn injuries, with 87.2% occurring inside the home: 69.4% were females and 39.3% were children. The main source of reported cause of burn was heat and flame (36%), electric current (31.6%), hot liquid (28.6%), and chemicals (2.7%). The most common first aid for burns was pouring water (74.7%). People in rural, refugee, and Bedouin settings had the highest incidence of burns. This study provides the burn prevalence rate, explanatory factors that contribute to the frequency of burns in Palestine. Making burn prevention a higher priority within the national policy is crucial.

Common mistakes in the choice of topical agents for emergency care of burns: Experimental study

The aim of the research was a histological study of the tissue structure of experimental animals with burns in dynamics using various topical agents after the injury. Experimental simulation of burn injuries was performed on 40 rats, which were divided into the main and control groups. Depending on the nature of care provided, the animals of the main group were divided into subgroups: in the 1st subgroup a uniform layer of sunflower oil was applied, in the 2nd subgroup dexpanthenol was sprayed, in the 3rd subgroup prompt neutralization of traumatic action was performed with a gauze napkin soaked in water. Animals from the control group were not treated. The examination involved a histological study. The results confirmed the negative impact of applying oil to the burnt area as a means of first aid, which caused more pronounced degenerative changes of the dermis and its structures with the involvement of hypodermis in the pathological process, prolonging the duration of healing. As for the use of dexpanthenol spray for burn injuries, the histological changes of tissues did not differ much from those in animals of the control group, which did not receive any care. At the same time, histological findings of the tissues of animals treated with moistened wipes was characterized by less pronounced pathological changes. Histological analysis of tissue changes of the burnt area in dynamics objectively proved the effectiveness of water as the main pathogenetic element of emergency care in an experiment.

Knowledge and Practice of Burn First Aid Among Saudi Arabian Medical and Non-Medical University Students

Burns are serious injuries, resulting in high morbidity and healthcare costs. Effective first aid improves outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and practice of first aid for burn injuries among medical and non-medical students in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study (N = 408) was conducted, in which a questionnaire was administered assessing students' experience with burns, as well as their hypothetical responses to vignettes involving patients with burn injuries. Although most students reported having personal experience with burns, and had received some information regarding burn first aid, only about half were able to provide correct responses regarding first aid techniques, and medical students were no more accurate than non-medical students in their responses. Results suggest that members of the Saudi Arabian population may lack appropriate knowledge about burn first aid, and education and public information resources may help to remedy this problem.

Knowledge & awareness of burn first aid among health-care workers in Saudi Arabia: Are health-care workers in need for an effective educational program?

Objective:

The objective of this study was to assess the level of awareness and knowledge of first aid for burns among healthcare workers in Saudi Arabia.

Methods:

We conducted a cross-sectional study between September 2 and December 5, 2019, via a self-administered online questionnaire among healthcare workers at a university hospital. The questionnaire comprised 24 questions divided into two sections pertaining to demographics and first aid for burns. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee.

Results:

We included 1,438 respondents in this study. Females comprised 68.2% (982) of the respondents. A total of 513 respondents (35.7%) were medical students. The mean burn knowledge score of all respondents was 8.07 ± 2.03 out of 13. Interestingly, 940 individuals (65.4%) used traditional medications on the burn area. Knowledge regarding antibiotic use in burn injuries was poor—1,199 (82.3%) study participants agreed that antibiotics are beneficial in the case of burns, which is a wrong act. The mean knowledge score was significantly different across groups of different ages, sexes, nationalities, marital statuses, and job positions (P < 0.001).

Conclusion:

The level of awareness of first aid for burn patients among healthcare workers was insufficient, and the unnecessary use of traditional medicines and antibiotics in burn patients being high. Moreover, this study confirmed the need for an effective educational program among healthcare workers.

Survey on Knowledge of First Aid Management of Burns Amongst Medical and Non-medical Students in Karachi, Pakistan: Need for an Educational Intervention?

Background: Burn related injuries (BRIs) are relatively common, mostly accidental, and highly preventable forms of injury. First aid management of BRIs can have a significant impact on the outcome and morbidity of these injuries, yet there seems to be an inadequacy in the knowledge related to burn management worldwide. Hence, our study aimed to delineate the level of knowledge and awareness of burn first aid treatment (BFAT) amongst undergraduate students, and the impact training courses had on that knowledge.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by employing undergraduate medical and non-medical students from various universities of Karachi, Pakistan. By means of convenience sampling, 400 students were sent online, structured questionnaires. The analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 23.0, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, US), and associations calculated through t-tests. A mean knowledge score was calculated to assess the participant’s adequacy of knowledge regarding BFAT.

Results: Medical students had a better knowledge score than their non-medical counterparts (5.8 ± 1.6 versus 3.6 ± 1.5, P < 0.01), however, overall knowledge of BFAT remained inadequate amongst participants. Students who received formal training scored a higher mean knowledge score than the majority of students with no training (P < 0.01).

Conclusion: The majority of students had insufficient overall knowledge about BFAT, highlighting the need for integrating this topic into the curriculum. In addition, education of the masses via multimedia and conducting formal training courses, are both imperative in raising awareness and reducing the occurrence of BRIs.

Acid attacks: Broadening the multidisciplinary team to improve outcomes

A rise in the current trend of corrosive substance attacks have been reported in the UK, causing devastating effects on victims. The optimal management of these patients requires the specialist skills of the burn multidisciplinary team (MDT) to address the resulting physical and psychological trauma experienced. However, burn care must commence in the pre-hospital setting. The public and first responders are invaluable resources in helping to limit the adverse effects of burns. Challenges of burn care outside the Burns Unit are not limited to the treatment of the injured patient and the rehabilitation of survivors. These challenges also encompass better education of the public and allied health professionals, as well as planning strategies to reduce the incidence of acid attacks. Prevention is always better than cure. This paper discusses the broadening of the MDT to improve outcomes in acid attacks by exploring the wider roles of the public, media, emergency services, police, legislation and better education.

Knowledge and practices related to burn first aid among Majmaah community, Saudi Arabia

Background:

Burns in developing countries account for significant morbidity and mortality which have been shown by increasing burn first aid awareness. In general, flames, scalds, and contact burns are the most common causes, but in children scalds are the most common.

Objectives:

This study aims to assess the general knowledge and practices related to burn first aid among Majmaah community.

Methods:

This study is a cross-sectional study. Data were collected in 2018 using convenience sampling technique. Saudi men and women age 18 years and older living in Majmaah were included in the study. Data were collected from 390 males and females. The sample size was collected using precision formula. Data were encoded into Microsoft Excel worksheets and imported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS^®) software for analysis.

Results:

A total of 390 individuals responded to the survey. Regarding the demographic data of the study participants, 49.2% were between 30 and 49 years old. Most of them were females (71.8%). Regarding burn first aid knowledge, 82.6% of the study participants knew that the first thing is to stop, drop, and roll when your clothes catch fire, 43.8% knew to apply cold water if hot oil spills on the hands, 41.0% knew that all burn injuries must be treated at hospital, whereas most of them 78.5% knew never to apply raw eggs or herbs to burn wounds.

Conclusion:

The knowledge of Majmaah community toward first aid is found to be low in spite of most of the respondents having a positive attitude toward first aid. The majority of the study participants (73.8%) were well-educated and had a bachelor's degree.

Traditional methods for managing illness in newborns and infants in an Arab society

AIM

This study explored self-management practices in relation to traditional methods for managing illness in newborns and infants and the implications of these practices on infant health.

BACKGROUND

Self-medication with folk remedies is believed to have short- and long-term impacts on well-being. Little is known about how mothers in Arab societies used their traditional beliefs and practices in self-managing their newborns' and infants' health.

METHODS

Data were collected from five focus groups using open-ended questions with 37 mothers. Participants were selected using snowball sampling and were recruited from four different cities in Jordan between June 2016 and August 2016.

ETHICAL APPROVAL

All identifying information regarding the study participants has been omitted, and this study was approved by the Academic Research Committee at the University of Jordan.

FINDINGS

Mothers were more willing to try herbal remedies, traditional massage and certain foods to self-manage their infants' health. Folk remedies were not restricted to traditions handed down through generations, but included a representation of newly emerged trends towards 'safety' or 'nature'.

CONCLUSIONS

While the use of folk remedies have been handed down generations as customs, today, virtual support groups and social media provide modern resources for folk remedies' promotion in care and self-management.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Nursing and health policymakers can use our findings for planning and developing strategies and health policies that increase public awareness about adverse health effects associated with herbal remedies. Such strategies are likely to be facilitated through partnerships between nursing and midwifery education institutions, antenatal clinics and social media in the region.

First aid for children's burns in the US and UK: An urgent call to establish and promote international standards

INTRODUCTION

Appropriate first aid can reduce the morbidity of burns, however, there are considerable variations between international first aid recommendations. We aim to identify, and compare first aid practices in children who present to Emergency Departments (ED) with a burn.

METHODS

A prospective cross-sectional study of 500 children (0-16 completed years) presenting with a burn to a paediatric ED in the UK (Cardiff) and the USA (Denver, Colorado), during 2015-2017. The proportion of children who had received some form of first aid and the quality of first aid were compared between cities.

RESULTS

Children attending hospital with a burn in Cardiff were 1.47 times more likely (RR 1.47; CI 1.36, 1.58), to have had some form of first aid than those in Denver. Denver patients were 4.7 time more likely to use a dressing and twice as likely to apply ointment/gel/aloe vera than the Cardiff cohort. First aid consistent with local recommendations was only administered to 26% (128/500) of children in Cardiff and 6% (31/500) in Denver. Potentially harmful first aid e.g. application of food, oil, toothpaste, shampoo or ice was applied to 5% of children in Cardiff and 10% in Denver.

CONCLUSION

A low number of children received optimal burns first aid, with potentially harmful methods applied in a considerable proportion of cases. There is an urgent need for internationally agreed, evidence-based burn first aid recommendations.

Burn first aid knowledge and its determinants among general population of Rawalpindi

OBJECTIVE

To assess the general knowledge and practices related to burn first aid treatment (BFAT) and to examine age, gender, socioeconomic status, education and previous history of exposure to burn (self/family member) as factors influencing burn first aid knowledge among the general population of Rawalpindi.

STUDY DESIGN

A cross-sectional, descriptive survey.

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY

Three major tertiary care hospitals of Rawalpindi, from August 2017 to May 2018.

METHODOLOGY

All consenting people ≥ 18 years of age, with or without a prior history of burn, accompanying patients to three major tertiary care centers of Rawalpindi were administered a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections; socio-demographic section and knowledge on BFAT. Those who were illiterate and could not fill the questionnaire were interviewed and their responses were marked by the researchers themselves. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.

RESULTS

A total of 400 participants comprising 205 (51.3%) males and 195 (48.8%) females with a mean age of 38 ± 10.3 years were included. The majority (58%) were educated up to 12th grade or higher. "Toothpaste" (47.5%) followed by "cool running water" (20.3%) were the two most frequently applied items following a burn injury. Only 8.8% respondents applied cold water for the ideal time duration. Overall, 83% of the participants provided correct answers for 25-50% of the survey questions. Socioeconomic and educational status of the participants had a significant association with burn first aid knowledge.

CONCLUSION

A significant limitation of knowledge regarding BFAT was seen among the general population of Rawalpindi.

The Importance of First Aid to Burned Patients: 30 Years of Experience at the Burns Centre in Pisa

The first aids to burned patients are fundamental for the evolution of the disease and the success of the next medical care in a Burns Center. In our 30-years experience, we can reassume that they must be provided to limit the cause of thermal damage, to evaluate and correct eventual respiratory or cardiovascular disorders, to find out the possible damage to different organs and the primary care on cutaneous lesions.
