Abstract
There is a need for proficient nursing practice in specialized critical care settings, such as a pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit. The staffing crisis continues to be problematic for areas around the country. Nursing tenure has been positively correlated with improving patient outcomes and confidence in giving care, so efforts must be made to retain pediatric BMT nurses. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors of resilience and how it pertains to the retention of pediatric BMT nurses through (1) Understanding current BMT nursing turnover and trend why nurses are leaving; (2) Measure resilience throughout BMT nursing cohort, covering all tenure of nurses; and (3) Interview senior nurses within the cohort to identify themes relating to retention and resilience using grounded theory methodology. This research was carried out in the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). The study spanned from 2014 to 2019, during which researchers gathered extensive data to evaluate the turnover risk among BMT nurses. A detailed follow-up was conducted in 2019 to further assess this risk. To measure resilience levels, a group of 115 nurses in the unit completed the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with 9 senior nurses in the cohort, continuing until theoretical saturation was reached, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing nurse turnover in the unit. Researchers looked retrospectively at nursing turnover from 2014 to 2019. Investigators determined the risk of new nurses leaving was between 22 and 24 months (HR 0.025). Further, follow-up was conducted for data points between 2019-present time, which showed a drastic change in the hazard rate curvature. However, the risk remained relatively the same at 22 to 24 months (HR 0.03). There was no statistical significance found between CD-RISC results and age (P = .465), gender (P = .725), working experience (P = .15), or education (P = .14). Through a constant comparative process, several themes were identified as positive, negative, and ambiguous contributions to the retention of nurses. The risk of nurses leaving after 2 years decreases significantly; therefore, we determined that a nurse with a commitment to pediatric BMT occurs with 2 years' experience. Although our initial hypothesis was that senior nurses had greater resilience than less tenured nurses, there was no statistical significance as the effect of resilience is small. However, we identified several additional factors pertinent to the pediatric BMT field which may be associated with nursing retention.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oncology teams are challenged by BO, which may be alleviated by meaningful recognition. In this study, firgun-altruistic acknowledgment-was implemented on a pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant unit to evaluate its impact on staff and work environment. METHODS In this longitudinal, mixed-methods pilot study, interdisciplinary inpatient hematopoietic cell transplant providers received web-based firgun education. Electronic administration of validated surveys occurred at baseline and 8 weeks, including Perceived Stress Scale, Professional Quality of Life Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Workplace Civility Index, Areas of Work Life Survey, and WHO-5. Weekly e-mails reminded participants to practice and log firgun. Wilcoxon signed test for paired data compared pre/post results. Interviews conducted at project completion were coded using MaxQDA software. RESULTS Forty-two participants enrolled; 25 completed pre/post surveys; eight were interviewed. At study end, participants reported feeling less nervous and stressed (P = .008), and less difficulty coping (P = .01; Perceived Stress Scale), while noting increased acknowledgment of others' work (P = .04) and seeking constructive feedback (P = .04; Workplace Civility Index). Marked BO was not evident overall on the Maslach Burnout Inventory; however, emotional exhaustion subscale mean (SD) scores improved from pre (19.4 [8.6]) to post (16 [6.3; P = .02]) and individual items illustrated decreased fatigue (P = .008), frustration (P = .04), and feeling "at the end of my rope" (P = .001). Postintervention participants noted increased receipt of recognition (P = .02; Areas of Work Life Survey), decreased feeling "bogged down" (P = .02), decreased affective stress (P = .04), and negative pre-occupations (P = .04; Professional Quality of Life Scale). Qualitative analysis revealed themes of improved confidence at work and enhanced feelings of trust and teamwork. CONCLUSION Firgun is a tool that can potentially reduce BO and stress in interdisciplinary providers, facilitate teamwork, and promote positive work environments in clinical oncology and beyond.

Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between the professional quality of life and work environment among intensive care unit nurses, and identify the influencing factors of intensive care unit nurses' professional quality of life. Methods This study design is cross-sectional and correlational descriptive. Four hundred fourteen intensive care unit nurses from Central China were recruited. Data were collected from three questionnaires of self-designed demographic questions, the professional quality of life scale and the nursing work environment scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Results A total of 414 questionnaires was collected, for an effective recovery rate of 98.57%. The original scores of the three sub-scales of professional quality of life were 33.58 ± 6.43, 31.83 ± 5.94, and 32.55 ± 5.74. Compassion satisfaction was positively correlated with the nursing working environment (p < 0.05), job burnout, and secondary trauma were negatively correlated with nursing work in environment (p < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis results show that, the nursing working environment entered into the influential factor model of professional quality of life scale (p < 0.001). The nursing working environment independently explained 26.9% of the changes in compassion satisfaction, 27.1% of the changes in job burnout, and 27.5% of the changes in secondary trauma. The nursing work environment is an important factor affecting the professional quality of life. Conclusion The better the nursing working environment, the higher the professional quality of life of intensive care unit nurses. Decision makers and managers can focus on improving the working environment of nurses, which may be a new perspective for managers to improve the professional quality of life of nurses and stabilize the nursing team.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Compassion fatigue (CF), which includes burnout and secondary traumatic stress, is highly prevalent among healthcare providers (HCPs). Ultimately, if left untreated, CF is often associated with absenteeism, decreased work performance, poor job satisfaction, and providers leaving their positions. To identify risk factors for developing CF and interventions to combat it in pediatric hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant (PHOB) HCPs. METHODS An integrative review was conducted. Controlled vocabulary relevant to neoplasms, CF, pediatrics, and HCPs was used to search PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PsycINFO, and Web of Science MEDLINE. Inclusion criteria were the following: English language and PHOB population. Exclusion criteria were the following: did not address question, wrong study population, mixed study population where PHOB HCPs were only part of the population, articles about moral distress as this is a similar but not the same topic as CF, conference abstracts, and book chapters. RESULTS A total of 16 articles were reviewed: 3 qualitative, 6 quantitative, 3 mixed methods, and 4 non research. Three themes were explored: (1) high-risk populations for developing CF, (2) sources of stress in PHOB HCPs, and (3) workplace interventions to decrease CF. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS PHOB HCPs are at high risk of developing CF due to high morbidity and mortality in their patient population. Various interventions, including the use of a clinical support nurse, debriefing, support groups, respite rooms, and retreats, have varying degrees of efficacy to decrease CF in this population.

Abstract
Background: Nursing staff retention is an ongoing concern within pediatric hematology/oncology settings globally. Work-related stressors cause emotional burden, psychological distress, and burnout to which nurses respond by leaving their workplace. Consequently, workplace culture and functionality are negatively impacted, quality of care reduces, and potential harm to patients increases. This paper aims to identify the "most" influencing factors for intention to leave among pediatric hematology/oncology nurses. Methods: A systematic search was undertaken on 29 July 2021 across five electronic databases, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Joanna Briggs Institute, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Web of Science, using MeSH and keywords related to pediatric hematology/oncology nurse retention. Results: The initial search yielded 283 articles. Following abstract and full-text review, nine articles met inclusion criteria. Across all studies, strong links between health service organizational factors (e.g., unit acuity and time constraints), clinician demographics (e.g., age, education, experience, and coping mechanisms), and nursing retention within pediatric hematology/oncology settings were observed. Direct patient care and long-term relationships with pediatric hematology/oncology patients were identified as the most frequent and intense stressors, while also presenting the most rewarding aspect of the nurse's work. Discussion: Clinician burnout and retention were found to be complex and multifaceted organizational and individual issues, which most importantly evolved from accumulative exposure to specialty-specific stressors. Interventions to prevent clinician burnout and improve staff retention, therefore, need to comprise individual and organizational level strategies specific to the healthcare context.

Abstract
Burnout can affect nurses’ sleep quality. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between burnout syndrome and sleep problems in nurses. A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus databases were used. Some of the inclusion criteria were quantitative studies, in which the levels of burnout and sleep disorders were investigated in a sample of nurses using validated scales. A total of 12 studies were included. Sociodemographic variables did not influence the relation between burnout and sleep problems, except for being female. The environment and workplace violence, together with psychological traits and shifts, affect the probability of developing burnout and insomnia. The meta-analysis sample was n = 1127 nurses. The effect size of the correlation between burnout and sleep disorders was r = 0.39 (95% CI 0.29−0.48) with p < 0.001, indicating that the higher the level of burnout in nurses, the greater the presence of sleep disorders. The positive correlation between burnout and sleep disorders is a problem that must be addressed to improve the health of nurses. Developing turnicity strategies, using warmer lights in hospital units during night shifts and eliminating the fixed night shift could improve nurses’ working conditions.

Abstract
Nurses experience high levels of burnout, and this has become a major factor in recruitment and retention of nurses. Several factors have been associated with burnout, but it is not clear which factors are the most significant predictors. Understanding the most prevalent factors that are associated with burnout will allow for the development and implementation of interventions to ameliorate and/or reduce burnout in the nursing workforce.

Abstract
Aim This study investigated the status of job burnout, work‐related depression and job satisfaction among neurological and neurosurgical nurses in Poland. Design A cross‐sectional and multicentre study. Methods The sample consisted of 206 neurological and neurosurgical nurses, all of whom completed a self‐report questionnaire designed by the authors. Results The results revealed a work‐related burnout incidence of 32%, colleague‐related burnout incidence of 44.2% and patient‐related burnout incidence of 22.8%. Nurses working in neurological departments were statistically over three times more likely to struggle with colleague‐related burnout than nurses working in neurosurgical departments were. Further, work‐related burnout was higher in people aged above 54 years than those in the youngest age category. Nonetheless, 71.8% of the nurses expressed satisfaction with their work. In sum, our results indicated that job burnout is common among registered nurses and that personal (age) and workplace (type of ward, distance to work, experience and shift work) factors contributed to symptoms of burnout.

Abstract
Background Working in the nursing sector is accompanied by great physical and mental health burdens. Consequently, it is necessary to develop target-oriented, sustainable profession-specific support and health promotion measures for nurses. Objectives The present review aims to give an overview of existing major health problems and violence experiences of nurses in different settings (acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home-based long-term care) in Germany. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and PubPsych and completed by a manual search upon included studies’ references and health insurance reports. Articles were included if they had been published after 2010 and provided data on health problems or violence experiences of nurses in at least one care setting. Results A total of 29 studies providing data on nurses health problems and/or violence experience were included. Of these, five studies allowed for direct comparison of nurses in the settings. In addition, 14 studies provided data on nursing working in acute care hospitals, ten on nurses working in long-term care facilities, and four studies on home-based long-term care. The studies either conducted a setting-specific approach or provided subgroup data from setting-unspecific studies. The remaining studies did not allow setting-related differentiation of the results. The available results indicate that mental health problems are the highest for nurses in acute care hospitals. Regarding violence experience, nurses working in long-term care facilities appear to be most frequently affected. Conclusion The state of research on setting-specific differences of nurses’ health problems and violence experiences is insufficient. Setting-specific data are necessesary to develop target-group specific and feasible interventions to support the nurses’ health and prevention of violence, as well as dealing with violence experiences of nurses.

Abstract
Cancer is considered one of the dominant life-threatening diseases in children. Working in the field of pediatric oncology, although rewarding, can be a source of stress and emotional burden for health care providers. The aim of this systematic review was to summarise the evidence regarding the occupational stress of health care providers working with pediatric cancer patients. Extensive search of the Pubmed and Scopus databases was performed to identify studies relevant to the topic. Initial search retrieved 657 studies. The reviewing investigators, after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, extracted data to critically appraise the quality of evidence. The final step of search concluded in 23 studies of heterogeneous design. Results revealed two main domains of which occupational stress derived from i) the interaction of the health care provider with the patient and the family, and ii) several organisational factors, such as hierarchical structures, experience, workload, and low organisational support. Literature on the stress of pediatric oncology staff is limited. The rather small sample sizes of the studies, the heterogeneity of methodological design, the lack of assessment from a sociological point of view, as well as the limited psychometric instruments adapted to pediatric oncology staff, make the validity of the results questionable. Further research is warranted to obtain a more accurate view of the field, to identify a cause-effect relation between work-related stress and pediatric oncology staff, and, more importantly, to guide future recommendations on support systems and stress management training within pediatric oncology settings.

Abstract
The current study focused on pediatric nurses. It explored the direct link between posttraumatic growth as a coping resource and burnout and the indirect link between posttraumatic growth and burnout via secondary traumatic stress (mediating effect). Moreover, meaning in work was examined as a moderator variable in relation to the direct link and the indirect link. One hundred and thirty-eight nurses working at a pediatric medical center filled out self-report questionnaires regarding personal and professional data, burnout, posttraumatic growth, secondary traumatic stress, and meaning in work. Posttraumatic growth was found to be a coping resource that linked to pediatric nurses' burnout directly and indirectly. Directly, there was an inverse correlation between the two; indirectly, posttraumatic growth linked negatively to secondary traumatic stress, and secondary traumatic stress linked positively to burnout. Moreover, meaning in work played a dual moderating role. First, it moderated the relationship between posttraumatic growth and secondary traumatization. Second, it moderated the direct relationship between posttraumatic growth and burnout, namely, the negative link between posttraumatic growth and burnout became stronger as meaning in work increased. As such, we recommend enhancing personal and professional posttraumatic growth, as well as designing interventions that promote meaningful work among pediatric nurses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Substantial growth in the field of transplantation in recent years has increased the need for transplant coordinators. The growing need for these highly skilled clinicians warrants a review of characteristics that increase job satisfaction, an important consideration for transplant centers. RESEARCH QUESTION The study described transplant coordinators' perceptions of job satisfaction in their current positions. DESIGN This study evaluated transplant coordinator job satisfaction conducted on 3 separate occasions at US geographically diverse sites. Two instruments, the Vermont Nurses: Job Analysis and Retention Survey and an investigator-designed role and demographic survey, were used to capture study participants' attitudes regarding elements of job satisfaction, design, and involvement. RESULTS Demographic characteristics of study participants (N = 133) reveal a largely female population (n = 113, 85%) employed full time (n = 124, 93%) in a hospital setting (n = 106, 80%). Scores for items related to job satisfaction, design, and involvement were generally positive. Participants reported being less satisfied for characteristics including promotion opportunities, fringe benefits, and attention to career development provided by employers. CONCLUSION As annual rates of transplants continue to increase across the United States, the need for growing and retaining talented staff in transplant care settings is even more critical. Results of the study suggest that while transplant coordinators remain largely satisfied with the challenges and personal fulfillment associated with their positions, opportunities for professional development may improve retention and recruitment. Specifically, supporting career development and providing formalized evaluation and supervision were identified as areas of improvement within this specialized group of clinicians.

Abstract
Background: Burnout, moral distress, compassion fatigue, and posttraumatic stress disorder are concerns for health-care staff. Due to the high mental, physical, and emotional demands of the pediatric hematology/oncology profession, workplace supports should be in place to address the needs of the staff. A nurse-led support program is one strategy to enhance staff well-being. Methods: The Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant Advancing Resiliency Team (HART) is a nurse-led peer-to-peer on-site support program for multidisciplinary staff caring for hematology/oncology patients. HART coaches, working 8-hour shifts, covering both day and night shift hours, are present 3 days a week on the unit. HART offers a confidential space for one on one or group interactions, educational sessions, assistance with work related, patient-care based, or personal concerns, and various forms of integrative therapies. Results: There have been over 1,100 coach consults and 98 HART shifts worked. The most commonly reported changes since HART began include staff feeling more supported by leadership and staff making time for breaks during the work shift. A 25.6% increase in staff reporting to be extremely satisfied with unit support was found. Discussion: Cultivating a culture of staff support is important. Due to COVID-19, physical HART coach presence was put on hold for 4 weeks and virtual interventions were trialed. Since its return, coach consult numbers have been steadily rising. Having a support program led by coaches with direct experience understanding the emotional toll of caring for the pediatric hematology/oncology patient population was found to be well utilized, feasible through donor funding, and measurable via staff report.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to compare the burnout level and perceptions of burnout between oncology physicians and nurses, and to explore the relationship between these perceptions and the burnout level in physicians and nurses separately. METHODS The whole crew of the Peking University Cancer Hospital was invited to participate in the survey. Maslach Burnout Scale Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) was used. Ten additional items on the perceptions of burnout were added to assess concerns on burnout, perceptions on the negative impact of burnout and perceptions on how to prevent burnout. RESULTS In total, 862 (71%) oncology clinicians completed the questionnaire, including 285 physicians (33%) and 577 (67%) nurses. The proportion of the high risk of low personal accomplishment (PA) is higher in nurses than in physicians (39.3% V.S. 29.8%, p = 0.007). Most clinicians (72.2% of physicians, 82.4% of nurses) would like to participant in interventions to prevent burnout, but only a few of them (5.7% of physicians, 4.1% of nurses) had an opportunity to participate in. Both physicians (91.9%) and nurses (89.8%) rated increasing paid vacation as the most priority strategy to prevent burnout. The job-hopping intention is correlated to a high level of burnout in both physicians and nurses. CONCLUSIONS The burnout level did not differ significantly between oncology nurses and physicians, except the low PA level. There was a big gap between their needs for burnout interventions and the resources they really had. The clinicians with a job-hopping intention should be paid attention to their burnout.

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study is to explore staff experiences of working in a children's blood and cancer center in New Zealand, with a particular focus on how staff maintain resilience in their work and sustain working in this difficult area. Methods: Constructivist grounded theory (GT) methods were used to collect data using focus groups and individual interviews with all staff (nursing, medical, allied health, cleaning, and support staff) working in the area. Data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis, and data collection continued until theoretical saturation was achieved. Results: The GT constructed in this study is being a work family, which includes three core categories: finding attachment, becoming a work family, and having an identity. Discussion: This study found that regardless of profession or discipline, all staff experience similar feelings about their work, and can develop and enhance their resilience by belonging to a "work family." Being socially connected to the work family was recognized as the most supportive intervention, and was identified as being of greater value than the traditional one-on-one support that is currently encouraged.

Abstract
Purpose: To determine levels of burnout among paediatric oncology nurses, and the risk factors that may influence its development. Method: A literature review with meta-analysis was conducted, via a search in the PubMed, CINHAL, Scopus, ProQuest (Health and Medical Complete), Scielo and PsycINFO databases, using the search equation: "Nurs* AND burnout AND oncology AND pediatric". Results: The final sample of selected studies was of eight articles. All were quantitative studies of paediatric oncology nurses, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, written in English or Spanish. No search restrictions were established on the year of publication. The eight studies reported moderate-high levels of burnout in each of its three dimensions. These dimensions were all related to the characteristics of the profession, in terms of complexity, shifts and workload, and to sociodemographic variables such as marital status, work experience, age and gender. The prevalence meta-analytical estimation for a sample of n = 361 nurses were 37% for high emotional exhaustion, 16% for high depersonalisation and 27% for low personal fulfilment. Conclusions: Most paediatric oncology nurses present moderate-high levels of burnout. Therefore, strategies and interventions should be identified and implemented to protect these workers from the syndrome.

Abstract
Burnout syndrome is a major problem in occupational health, which also affects nursing managers. The main aim was to analyze the level, prevalence and risk factors of burnout among nursing managers. A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted. The databases used were Medline (Pubmed), PsycINFO, CINAHL, LILACS, Scielo and Scopus. The search equation was “burnout AND nurs* AND (health manager OR case managers)”. Nursing managers present high levels of emotional exhaustion and a high degree of depersonalization. Some studies show that variables like age, gender, marital status, having children or mobbing and other occupational factors are related with burnout. The prevalence estimation of emotional exhaustion with the meta-analysis was high; 29% (95% CI = 9–56) with a sample of n = 780 nursing managers. The meta-analytical estimation of the correlation between burnout and age was r = −0.07 (95% CI = −0.23–0.08). Work overload, the need to mediate personnel conflicts, lack of time and support from superior staff, contribute to the development of burnout among nursing managers.

Death Self-efficacy, Attitudes Toward Death and Burnout Among Oncology Nurses: A Multicenter Cross-sectional Study. Cancer Nurs 2020; 45:E388-E396. Abstract
BACKGROUND To effectively care for dying patients, nurses need to possess death self-efficacy-the state of having both a range of skills and capabilities to provide care to dying patients and confidence in one's ability to do so. A paucity of death self-efficacy may lead to burnout. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study are to clarify oncology nurses' death self-efficacy and to explore its relationships with attitudes toward death and burnout. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed in 7 cancer hospitals across mainland China between June and July 2019. Oncology nurses completed an online survey consisting of the Death Self-efficacy Scale, Death Attitude Profile-Revised Scale, and Maslach Burnout Inventory. RESULTS The 755 oncology nurses completing the survey reported low death self-efficacy and high levels of burnout. Those who had more years of clinical experience, had the highest professional rank, talked death quite often, and have received palliative care trainings, doing no shift work, scored higher on death self-efficacy. Death self-efficacy was positively correlated with positive attitudes toward death and negatively correlated with levels of burnout. The multiple regression analysis showed that death self-efficacy and attitudes toward death were independent, significant predictors of oncology nurses' burnout. CONCLUSIONS Chinese oncology nurses are not well prepared to care for dying cancer patients and cope with death-related issues. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Improvement in death self-efficacy among oncology nurses is necessary, especially for those who are young, are unmarried, are doing shift work, and never received palliative care training. Enhanced death self-efficacy may be realized through self-reflective practice and palliative care education.

Abstract
Burnout in healthcare providers has impacts at the level of the individual provider, patient, and organization. While there is a substantial body of literature on burnout in healthcare providers, burnout in pediatric nurses has received less attention. This subpopulation may be unique from adult care nurses because of the specialized nature of providing care to children who are typically seen as a vulnerable population, the high potential for empathetic engagement, and the inherent complexities in the relationships with families. Thus, the aim of this scoping review was to investigate, among pediatric nurses, (i) the prevalence and/or degree of burnout, (ii) the factors related to burnout, (iii) the outcomes of burnout, and (iv) the interventions that have been applied to prevent and/or mitigate burnout. This scoping review was performed according to the PRISMA Guidelines Scoping Review Extension. CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ASSIA, and The Cochrane Library were searched on 3 November 2018 to identify relevant quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method studies on pediatric nurse burnout. Our search identified 78 studies for inclusion in the analysis. Across the included studies, burnout was prevalent in pediatric nurses. A number of factors were identified as impacting burnout including nurse demographics, work environment, and work attitudes. Similarly, a number of outcomes of burnout were identified including nurse retention, nurse well-being, patient safety, and patient-family satisfaction. Unfortunately, there was little evidence of effective interventions to address pediatric nurse burnout. Given the prevalence and impact of burnout on a variety of important outcomes, it is imperative that nursing schools, nursing management, healthcare organizations, and nursing professional associations work to develop and test the interventions to address key attitudinal and environmental factors that are most relevant to pediatric nurses.

Abstract
Burnout in health service staff is a cause for concern since it has negative consequences for the individual affected, the wider organization, and patients. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) has been widely used to assess the prevalence of burnout within oncology services. The MBI-HSS is a self-report measure comprising three subscales-Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and Personal Accomplishment (PA). This article reports on the first study to investigate the psychometric properties of the MBI-HSS when administered to pediatric oncology staff. Two hundred and three pediatric oncology staff recruited through seven UK Principal Treatment Centers (PTCs) and a children's cancer charity completed the MBI-HSS. The factor structure of the instrument was tested using confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, with Rasch analysis applied to assess whether the measure meets the requirements of an interval-level scale. Cronbach alpha was used to assess internal reliability. Factor analysis did not support the traditional three-factor structure of the MBI-HSS but instead suggested seven factors. Rasch analysis and alpha coefficients indicated that while the EE and the PA subscales fulfilled the requirements of an interval-level measure for group-level diagnosis, DP did not. Further investigation revealed a "floor effect" on many DP items. Whereas the EE and PA subscales of the MBI-HSS can be used in research with pediatric oncology staff working in PTCs, there are considerable problems with the DP subscale, and researchers should be cautious in interpreting data from this subscale.

Abstract
In the intense, cure-oriented setting of hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), delivery of high-quality palliative and end-of-life care is a unique challenge. Although HSCT affords patients a chance for cure, it carries a significant risk of morbidity and mortality. During HSCT, patients usually experience high symptom burden and a significant decrease in quality of life that can persist for long periods. When morbidity is high and the chance of cure remote, the tendency after HSCT is to continue intensive medical interventions with curative intent. The nature of the complications and overall condition of some patients may render survival an unrealistic goal and, as such, continuation of artificial life-sustaining measures in these patients may prolong suffering and preclude patient and family preparation for end of life. Palliative care focuses on the well-being of patients with life-threatening conditions and their families, irrespective of the goals of care or anticipated outcome. Although not inherently at odds with HSCT, palliative care historically has been rarely offered to HSCT recipients. Recent evidence suggests that HSCT recipients would benefit from collaborative efforts between HSCT and palliative care services, particularly when initiated early in the transplantation course. We review palliative and end-of-life care in HSCT and present models for integrating palliative care into HSCT care. With open communication, respect for roles, and a spirit of collaboration, HSCT and palliative care can effectively join forces to provide high-quality, multidisciplinary care for these highly vulnerable patients and their families.

Abstract
THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES Pediatric oncology nurses are particularly vulnerable to emotional distress. Responsible for the oversight of a child's care, these nurses sustain close interactions with multiple patients and families over time, many of whom are coping with life-limiting diagnoses. The world of pediatric oncology nurses is one where tragedy is routinely witnessed thus demanding self-care and healing across a continuum. PHENOMENON ADDRESSED The aim of this article is to outline and review the emotional sequelae of pediatric oncology nurses' work and to suggest interventions to support well-being in light of prolonged caregiving. Three major categories that are addressed include the aspects of clinical practice that influence caregiving, the risks of burnout, compassion fatigue, moral distress and grief, and interventions to counteract these phenomena. RESEARCH LINKAGES Future-nursing research should focus upon the development of validated, psychometrically sound measurement tools to assess nurse-specific variants of burnout, compassion fatigue, moral distress, and nurse grief. Qualitative research should investigate the relationship between personal variables, workplace and team characteristics, age and experience, and their influence on the predominance of burnout, compassion fatigue, moral distress, and nurse grief. Lastly, the phenomena of resiliency demands further study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although burnout in paediatric nurses has been addressed in previous research, the heterogeneous nature of the results obtained and of the variables studied highlights the need for a detailed analysis of the literature. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyse the literature on burnout characteristics, reported prevalence, severity and risk factors, to achieve a better understanding of the risk of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and feelings of low personal accomplishment. METHOD For this purpose, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. The databases consulted were CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, the Proquest Platform (Proquest Health & Medical Complete), Scielo and Scopus. This study used the search equation "burnout AND "pediatric nurs*"", and was conducted in July 2017. RESULTS The search produced 34 studies targeting burnout in paediatric nurses, with no restrictions on the date of publication. Many of these studies detected moderate-high values for the three dimensions of burnout, and highlighted sociodemographic, psychological and job-related variables associated with this syndrome. The sample population for the meta-analysis was composed of 1600 paediatric nurses. The following prevalence values were obtained: (i) emotional exhaustion, 31% (95% CI: 25-37%); (ii) depersonalisation, 21% (95% CI: 11-33%); (iii) low personal accomplishment, 39% (95% CI: 28-50%). CONCLUSIONS A significant number of paediatric nurses were found to have moderate-high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and low levels of personal accomplishment. These nurses, therefore, were either experiencing burnout or at high risk of suffering it in the future. These results support the need for further study of the risk factors for burnout in paediatric nurses. They also highlight the importance of developing interventions or therapies to help prevent or attenuate the above symptoms, thus helping nurses cope with the workplace environment and with situations that may lead to burnout.

Abstract
A projected shortage of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) health professionals was identified as a major issue during the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match System Capacity Initiative. Work-related distress and work-life balance were noted to be potential barriers to recruitment/retention. This study examined these barriers and their association with career satisfaction across HCT disciplines. A cross-sectional, 90-item, web-based survey was administered to advanced practice providers, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and social workers in 2015. Participants were recruited from membership lists of 6 professional groups. Burnout (measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory subscales of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization) and moral distress (measured by Moral Distress Scale-Revised) were examined to identify work-related distress. Additional questions addressed demographics, work-life balance, and career satisfaction. Of 5759 HCT providers who received an individualized invitation to participate, 914 (16%) responded; 627 additional participants responded to an open link survey. Significant differences in demographic and practice characteristics existed across disciplines (P < .05). The prevalence of burnout differed across disciplines (P < .05) with an overall prevalence of 40%. Over one-half of pharmacists had burnout, whereas social workers had the lowest prevalence at less than one-third. Moral distress scores ranged from 0 to 336 and varied by discipline (P < .05); pharmacists had the highest mean score (62.9 ± 34.8) and social workers the lowest (42.7 ± 24.4). In multivariate and univariate analyses, variables contributing to burnout varied by discipline; however, moral distress was a significant contributing factor for all providers. Those with burnout were more likely to report inadequate work-life balance and a low level of career satisfaction; however, overall there was a high level of career satisfaction across disciplines. Burnout, moral distress, and inadequate work-life balance existed at a variable rate in all HCT disciplines, yet career satisfaction was high. These results suggest specific areas to address in the work environment for HCT health professionals, especially the need for relief of moral distress and a greater degree of personal time. As the creation of healthy work environments is increasingly emphasized to improve quality care and decrease costs, these findings should be used by HCT leadership to develop interventions that mitigate work-related distress and in turn foster recruitment and retention of HCT providers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore how nurses manage personal and professional boundaries in caring for seriously ill children and their families. DESIGN AND METHODS Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, a convenience sample of 18 registered nurses from four practice sites was interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. RESULTS Nurses across the sites engaged in a process of maintaining integrity whereby they integrated two competing, yet essential, aspects of their nursing role - behaving professionally and connecting personally. When skillful in both aspects, nurses were satisfied that they provided high-quality, family-centered care to children and families within a clearly defined therapeutic relationship. At times, tension existed between these two aspects and nurses attempted to mitigate the tension. Unsuccessful mitigation attempts led to compromised integrity characterized by specific behavioral and emotional indicators. Successfully mitigating the tension with strategies that prioritized their own needs and healing, nurses eventually restored integrity. Maintaining integrity involved a continuous effort to preserve completeness of both oneself and one's nursing practice. CONCLUSIONS Study findings provide a theoretical conceptualization to describe the process nurses use in navigating boundaries and contribute to an understanding for how this specialized area of care impacts health care providers. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Work environments can better address the challenges of navigating boundaries through offering resources and support for nurses' emotional responses to caring for seriously ill children. Future research can further refine and expand the theoretical conceptualization of maintaining integrity presented in this paper and its potential applicability to other nursing specialties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oncology nursing is often a source of substantial stress for nurses. Many nurses, particularly novice nurses, have inadequate preparation to care for patients at the end of life and their families. Unless nurses prevent or manage work-related stress by using effective coping strategies, oncology nursing staff will continue to suffer from burnout and compassion fatigue. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this article is to identify stress levels and stressful factors of nurses working in oncology outpatient units and to explore coping behaviors for work-related stress of oncology staff nurses in outpatient units. METHODS A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used to identify stress levels and stressful factors for outpatient oncology nurses, investigate differences in stress levels among nurses' demographic characteristics, and explore coping behaviors of the nurses. Study participants (N = 40) included RNs and licensed practical nurses who completed the Nursing Stress Scale, three open-ended questions, and a demographic questionnaire. FINDINGS The highest sources of stress were workload and patient death and dying. Demographic variables of age and work experience in nursing showed a significant positive relationship to work-related stress scores. The three most frequently used coping behaviors were verbalizing, exercising or relaxing, and taking time for self. Continuing education programs on stress management are highly recommended. Outpatient oncology nurses should be nurtured and supported through tailored interventions at multiple levels to help them find effective coping strategies and develop self-care competencies. Although younger and less experienced nurses had lower mean stress scores than older and more experienced nurses, the continuing education programs and tailored interventions would be helpful for all oncology nursing staff.

Abstract
Bone marrow transplant (BMT) units are stressful work environments with high staff burnout, anxiety, and turnover. A qualitative study was undertaken to better understand care for nurses within the context of their clinical practice on a pediatric BMT unit. Understanding care practices for BMT nurses will allow us to design interventions and provide appropriate support for this subspecialty of nurses. Focus groups were held with 24 nurses as key participants, and 2 focus groups with general participants: unit management (N = 2) and caregivers of inpatients (N = 7). Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis. Data were transcribed verbatim and coded to consensus by members of the research team. Five themes emerged from the data: ( a) experiencing stressful situations that impede care, ( b) growing and developing personally and professionally, ( c) providing trustworthy and respectful care, ( d) acquiring meaningful coping skills, and ( e) sharing with others versus isolation. Stress management, professional development, and interdisciplinary communication were areas that emerged for potential intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although critical care nurses gain satisfaction from providing compassionate care to patients and patients' families, the nurses are also at risk for fatigue. The balance between satisfaction and fatigue is considered professional quality of life. OBJECTIVES To establish the prevalence of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue in adult, pediatric, and neonatal critical care nurses and to describe potential contributing demographic, unit, and organizational characteristics. METHODS In a cross-sectional design, nurses were surveyed by using a demographic questionnaire and the Professional Quality of Life Scale to measure levels of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. RESULTS Nurses (n = 221) reported significant differences in compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue on the basis of sex, age, educational level, unit, acuity, change in nursing management, and major systems change. CONCLUSIONS Understanding the elements of professional quality of life can have a positive effect on work environment. The relationship between professional quality of life and the standards for a healthy work environment requires further investigation. Once this relationship is fully understood, interventions to improve this balance can be developed and tested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most studies on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) have focused on patients, survivors, or their family members, such as siblings and parents. Little attention has been paid to nurses caring for HSCT pediatric patients and in particular in a Taiwanese context. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to explore nurses' lived experience caring for HSCT children in isolation within a general pediatric ward. METHOD A Husserlian phenomenological approach informed the exploration of the meaning and essence of the nurses' caring experience. Data were collected using semistructured interviews. RESULTS Twelve nurses were interviewed. Analysis of interviews yielded 3 main themes: being worried about ruining transplantation success, feeling loss of control in handling suffering, and reflecting upon the value of HSCT. CONCLUSIONS Nurses felt the stress of caring for HSCT children because of the heavy workload and the pressure of responsibility. Witnessing the suffering of patients/families was particularly stressful. However, nurses were helped to overcome this stress by looking at the value and meaning of HSCT. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Nurses need practical support from nursing leaders in terms of carefully organizing patient care, controlling the nurse-to-patient ratio, and offering a safe work environment by providing systematic formal training on HSCT and receiving proper supervision. Understanding and learning are gained from nurses who are able to seek meaning from HSCT through appreciating every caregiving effort and through valuing how their nursing role contributes to the quality of patients' care.

Abstract
Profissionais da oncologia pediátrica enfrentam estressores psicossociais no desempenho de suas atividades laborais que os tornam vulneráveis aoburnout. Este estudo teve por objetivo apresentar uma revisão integrativa da literatura relacionada ao estresse eburnout em profissionais da oncologia pediátrica. O levantamento bibliográfico foi realizado nas bases LILACS, MedLine e PsycINFO com análise da produção científica nacional e internacional relativa ao período de 1998 a 2012. Os resultados apontaram para uma produção científica restrita na área. Houve predominância de estudos voltados à identificação de fatores estressores. Enfermeiros constituíram a população mais frequentemente investigada. Os achados mostram a necessidade de ampliação dos estudos que abordem a relação entre estresse ocupacional e aspectos psicossociais, considerando a relevância desses fatores que perpassam a vivência dos profissionais que cuidam da criança com câncer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Occupational stress and burnout are well-recognised experiences reported by cancer care workers. The aim was to describe the frequency and severity of potential stressors as well as the effectiveness of coping skills of radiation therapists (RTs) and oncology nurses (ONs), which make up the two largest occupational groups in cancer care. METHODS A questionnaire was distributed to RTs and ONs in two large tertiary hospitals in Queensland. Descriptive data regarding severity of potential stressors at home and work as well as the perceived effectiveness of preferred coping styles for each stressor was compared for each professional group. Respondents were asked questions about their personal circumstances and to also complete five standardised questionnaires measuring resilience, mental well-being, depression, anxiety and burnout. RESULTS There were 71 respondents representing a response rate of 26%. The types of stressors differed between the two groups but both reported that heavy workload was the most severe workplace stressor. RTs reported higher stressor and coping strategy frequency than ONs. There were no identifiable differences between RTs and ONs in the types or effectiveness of coping strategies employed at home or work. Mental well-being for both groups was inversely correlated with depression, anxiety and burnout and positively correlated with resilience. CONCLUSIONS RTs experienced higher mean scores for stressors and coping than ONs. There were no significant between-group differences for anxiety, depression, burnout, mental well-being or resilience.

Abstract
AIM To establish the best available evidence regarding the relationship between the nursing shortage and nurses' job satisfaction, stress and burnout levels in oncology/haematology settings. METHODS Electronic databases (CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect, PsycInfo, PsycArticles, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Proquest and Mednar) were searched using a three-step strategy in order to identify published and unpublished studies conducted between 1990 and 2010. Grey literature was excluded in the review. The identified studies were evaluated using standardised critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute-Meta Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-MAStARI). A total of seven descriptive and descriptive-correlational studies published in English were included and data were presented in a narrative summary. RESULTS Findings revealed a positive bidirectional relationship between the nursing shortage and oncology registered nurses' (RNs') job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout. The extent of the job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout experienced by the oncology RNs and their perception of staffing inadequacy differed according to their demography and work settings. Particularly, nurses who had higher qualifications and positions, who worked full-time and who worked in inpatient settings and non-Magnet hospitals were more likely to attribute staffing inadequacy as one of the main contributing factors for their job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout. This led to a rise in the number of oncology RNs leaving the speciality. CONCLUSION Within the constraints of the study and the few quality papers available, it appears that oncology RNs who worked in substandard staffing units often express job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout, which prompt them to seek new employment out of the oncology specialty. This entails a pressing need for organisations to ensure sufficient staffing in oncology/haematology settings, in order to ensure that quality patient care is provided. Limited studies that examine the relationship between the nursing shortage and oncology RNs' stress and burnout have been conducted. Also, no studies in the Asian context have previously been conducted. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Organizations need to customize their strategies for the recruitment and retention of oncology nurses. The strategies should take into consideration the specific demographic characteristics of oncology nurses or those of work settings that are experiencing staffing inadequacy and negative nursing outcomes. The strategies should also aim to replicate features of other institutions that are attractive to oncology nurses, and also include training that help oncology nurses better manage their emotions. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH Future research needs to examine the relationship between the nursing shortage and oncology nurses' job satisfaction, stress and burnout in bone marrow transplant units, paediatric oncology settings and Asian oncology settings. The characteristics of oncology nurses or workplaces that are more likely to experience negative nursing outcomes due the nursing shortage should also be identified.

Abstract
Pediatric oncology has become a highly specialized area, and the transition from novice nurse to expert can be complicated. The aim of this study was to describe the perceptions of nurses in pediatric oncology regarding the role of an expert nurse in pediatric oncology. Nurses (n = 66) working in pediatric oncology participated by writing their narratives. The data were analyzed by means of content analysis, and 3 categories were found: an expert has confidence in his or her knowledge, an expert provides high-quality care, and an expert is given possibilities for professional growth. It can be concluded that when nurses are given possibilities for continuous education and reflection, and have a feeling of satisfaction at being able to fulfill a child and his or her family’s needs, this enhances their possibility to become experts and maintain expert competence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite the emphasis that communication skills training (CST) programmes place on attending to the emotional care of patients, evidence suggests that practitioners neglect this aspect of patient care. We describe and compare doctors' and nurses' accounts of managing the emotional care of parents of children with leukaemia, with the overall objective of examining how their accounts might inform training and policy. METHODS Audio-recorded qualitative interviews with 30 doctors and nurses working in six UK paediatric oncology and haematology treatment centres were analysed interpretatively, drawing on the constant comparative method. RESULTS Doctors' and nurses' descriptions of managing emotional care differed markedly. Doctors described reassuring parents through their ongoing clinical care of the child and by explaining the potentially curative nature of treatment. Doctors did not think they could reassure parents by eliciting and explicitly discussing parents' fears. In contrast, nurses relied on psychological skills and explicit discussion of parents' emotions to provide reassurance. Both doctors and nurses relied on each other to ensure that parents' emotional needs were met by the multidisciplinary team rather than by individual practitioners. CONCLUSION Nurses' accounts of providing emotional care resembled the emphasis on explicit emotional talk in CST. However, doctors' accounts indicated that they provided emotional care in ways that diverged markedly from expectations in CST but that were more consistent with their biomedical and authoritative role in patient care. These findings may have implications for CST in future revisions of guidelines, but work is first needed to explore parents' perspectives on emotional care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine work stress, and stress-coping strategies, and to analyze their the relationships in order to improve health-promoting lifestyle of nurses in Taiwan. METHODS Three hundred eighty-five nurses who had work experience for more than 6 mo, were selected from four district hospitals in Kaohsiung and Ping Tung. We used a stratified cluster random sampling method for the selection. The nurses answered a self-report questionnaire, which was categorized into four sections: personal background data, work stress, stress-coping strategies, and health-promoting lifestyle. RESULTS The findings indicate work stress and the health promoting lifestyle of nurses are at a higher level, with stress-coping strategies being at a medium level. Work stress and stress-coping strategies were significantly and positively correlated. Professional relationships, managerial role, personal responsibility, and recognition of work stress and the responsibilities of a health-promoting lifestyle were negatively correlated. Managerial role, personal responsibility, and organizational atmosphere of work stress as well as realization, an item of health-promoting lifestyle, were negatively correlated. Recognition of work stress and stress management, items of health-promoting lifestyle, were negatively correlated. Health responsibility, and self-actualization, items of health-promoting lifestyle, as well as stress-coping strategies were negatively correlated. Nutrition, an item of health-promoting lifestyle, and the support stress-coping strategy was negatively correlated. CONCLUSIONS Nurses have greater work pressure and better work stress-coping strategies, but worse health responsibility and realization of a health-promoting lifestyle. We suggest hospitals build good relationships and appropriately increase employment of nurses through a good work atmosphere to achieve nurses' realization of a health-promoting lifestyle.

Oncology nurses are more prone to experience job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout when they work in units with poor staffing. There is thus a need for greater understanding of the relationship between the nursing shortage and nursing outcomes in oncology/haematology settings. OBJECTIVES This review aimed to establish the best available evidence concerning the relationship between the nursing shortage and nurses' job satisfaction, stress and burnout levels in oncology/haematology settings; and to make recommendations for practice and future research. INCLUSION CRITERIA Types of participants: This review considered studies that included oncology registered nurses (RNs) who were more than 18 years of age and worked in either inpatient or outpatient oncology/haematology wards or units for the adult or paediatric patients.Types of intervention: This review considered studies that evaluated the relationship between the nursing shortage and nurses' job satisfaction, stress and burnout levels in oncology/haematology settings.Types of outcomes: This review included studies that measured job satisfaction, stress and burnout levels using different outcomes measures. Job satisfaction was determined by the Measure of Job Satisfaction scale, the Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale and the Likert scale, stress by the Pediatric Oncology Nurse Stressor Questionnaire and burnout by the Maslash Burnout Inventory scale.Types of studies: This review included descriptive/descriptive-correlational studies which were published in English. SEARCH STRATEGY The search strategy sought to identify published and unpublished studies conducted between 1990 and 2010. Using a three-step search strategy, the following databases were accessed: CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect, PsycInfo, PsycArticles, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Proquest and Mednar. ASSESSMENT OF METHODOLOGICAL QUALITY Two independent reviewers assessed each paper for methodological validity prior to inclusion in the review using standardised critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute-Meta Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-MAStARI). Disagreements were resolved through discussion, or with a third reviewer. DATA COLLECTION/EXTRACTION Data were extracted using standardised data extraction tool adapted from the JBI-MAStARI. Data synthesisDue to the heterogeneous nature of the included papers, a meta-analysis was not possible. Hence, a narrative summary was presented for the studies. RESULTS This review encompassed seven descriptive/descriptive-correlational studies. Findings revealed a positive bidirectional relationship between the nursing shortage and oncology nurses' job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout. In addition, the extent of oncology nurses' job dissatisfaction, stress and burnout, and their perception of staffing inadequacy also differed according to nurses' demography and work settings. CONCLUSIONS The nursing shortage, coupled with an increasing number of patients diagnosed with cancer, entail a pressing need for organisations to ensure sufficient staffing in oncology/haematology settings, in order to provide quality patient care. This then requires interventions that target both the recruitment and retention of nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Organisations need to customise their strategies for the recruitment and retention of oncology nurses. The strategies should take into considerations the specific demographic characteristics of oncology nurses or characteristics of work settings that are experiencing staffing inadequacy and negative nursing outcomes. The strategies should also aim to replicate features of other institutions that are attractive to oncology nurses; and also include training that help oncology nurses better manage their emotions. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH Future research need to examine the relationship between the nursing shortage and oncology nurses' job satisfaction, stress and burnout in bone marrow transplant units, paediatric oncology settings and also Asian oncology settings. Characteristics of oncology nurses or workplaces that are more likely to experience negative nursing outcomes due the nursing shortage should also be identified.
