A Revised Classification of the Phylinae (Insecta: Heteroptera: Miridae): Arguments for the Placement of Genera

A new genus and two new species of phylinae (Heteroptera: Miridae) from the Andean-Patagonian region of Argentina

As a contribution to the Festschrift devoted to Dr. Aleksander Herczek, Adesmiaphylus n. gen., a new Phylini (Miridae: Phylinae) from the Andean-Patagonian region of Argentina, is described to accommodate two new species: A. manzanoensis, n. sp. from Neuqun Province and A. herczeki, n. sp. from Mendoza Province. Both species were collected on plants in the genus Adesmia DC. (Fabaceae).

Revisiting the phylogeny of the family Miridae (Heteroptera: Cimicomorpha), with updated insights into its origin and life history evolution

Heteroptera is one of the most successfully adapted groups on Earth and can be observed in almost every environment. Within the evolution of heteropteran insects, Miridae show remarkable diversity (>11,700 spp.), accounting for a quarter of all Heteroptera. However, their phylogeny is still unclear, and no plausible theory for the driving force of their diversification has been established. In this work, we provide new suggestions for the phylogeny of Miridae using a larger dataset than previous studies. In addition, we suggest an alternative evolutionary history based on newly calibrated divergence dates for Miridae and its subordinate groups, and present probable factors of the family's success in terms of species diversity. The entire dataset comprises 16 outgroups and 188 ingroup taxa including all seven known subfamilies and 37 out of 45 known tribes. Each species is aligned as 3,577bp with six molecular loci (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA D3 region, H2A, and H3A). Among the molecular markers, we are the first to test histone genes (H2A, H3A) in Miridae. Our results raise the following points about phylogenetic relationships: i) The earliest group to diverge from Miridae was Monaloniini (Bryocorinae). ii) Bryocorinae and Cylapinae are polyphyletic, Deraeocorinae and Orthotylinae also rendered as non-monophyletic group. iii) Termatophylini and Coridromiini separated from Deraeocorinae and Orthotylinae respectively. iv) Four large tribes, Orthotylini, Phylini, Deraeocorini and Mirini are non-monophyletic. The results from our ancestral state reconstruction and divergence date estimation suggest the following: i) Miridae first diverged during the Late Jurassic (approx. 163.4 Mya), and the divergence dates of most subfamilies and tribes overlap with angiosperm radiation, which perhaps synergized their diversification. ii) Ancestral reconstruction results for Miridae reveal it to be predominantly phytophagous and diverge to oligophagy mainly in plant-tissue habitats, which could have allowed the mirids to select optimal tactics as plant-dwellers. iii) The common ancestor of Miridae originated among plant-dwellers mainly on Eudicots, and that tendency was largely maintained, but sporadic host shifts also occurred.

The plant bug subfamily Phylinae in Japan, with key to genera and descriptions of eight new species (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae)

The Japanese phyline fauna is reviewed and updated; 127 species referred to 37 genera are now recognized. Eight new species in five genera, namely Eremophylus Yasunaga, Europiella Reuter Orthonotus Stephans, Pityopsallus Wagner and Psallus Fieber, are herein described as new to science. The genus Eremophylus, now considered to have a close relationship to Europiella Reuter, is proposed to be placed in the subtribe Oncotylina of the tribe Phylini, and four other genera treated herein are re-diagnosed or discussed. The female of Eremophylus hirtus Yasunaga is documented for the first time, with a detailed description of the female genitalia. Europiellomorpha Duwal is synonymized with Europiella, and eight Asian species of Pityopsallus are also transferred from Psallus Fieber. A key and checklist for all known Japanese genera are provided.  

Total-evidence phylogeny of the Rhinomirini, taxonomic review of its subgroupings (Insecta: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae) and description of new Australian taxa

Rhinomirini (Insecta: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae) is a heterogeneous tribe of uncertain systematic position. We provide a phylogenetic analysis of this tribe based on morphological characters and molecular markers. Monophyly of the tribe was not supported by our findings. The Rhinocylapus complex and Rhinomiriella complex are transferred to Fulviini. Rhinomirini are restricted to the Rhinomiris complex. The record of Rhinomirini in Australia is considered dubious. The genera Punctifulvius and Yamatofulvus are transferred to the Rhinocylapus complex. The Rhinocylapus complex is recorded from Australia for the first time, with four new species: Mycetocylapus alexeyi sp. nov., Punctifulvius austellus sp. nov., Punctifulvius aquilonius sp. nov. and Rhinocylapoides valentinae sp. nov. The Philippine species Mycetocylapus major is synonymized with Mycetocylapus minor. The Australian species Rhinomiriella tuberculata is redescribed, and females of this species are described for the first time. Rhinomiriella aidani sp. nov. is described as new to science. The female genitalia of Proamblia elongata, Rhinocylapidius velocipidoides and Rhinomiris conspersus and the male genitalia of Rhinomiris conspersus and Rhinomiridius aethiopicus are illustrated and discussed. Sexual dimorphism in the Rhinocylapus complex and wing modifications in Cylapinae are discussed.

Macrotylushenryi, a new species of Pelargonium-feeding Cremnorrhinina from South Africa (Hemiptera, Miridae, Phylinae, Cremnorrhinini)

Macrotylushenryi is described as a new species from South Africa. This new taxon is recorded as feeding on species of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae) in the Western Cape. Documentation is provided in the form of diagnosis, description, habitus photographs, scanning electron micrographs, illustrations and images of genitalic structures, detailed distributional data, host plant information, and images of hosts and habitats. Morphological traits are similar to species of Macrotylus Fieber from the Northern Hemisphere, but coloration is substantially variable, and the structure of the male genitalia is distinctive.

Miscellanea Miridologica V. Taxonomy and chorology of new or little known taxa of Continental New Guinea and neighboring islands (Insecta, Heteroptera, Miridae)

Gressitocorishenryi (Deraeocorinae, Deraeocorini) is described as a new species on the basis of the female holotype from Syoubri vill(age), Arfak Mounts, Doberai Peninsula, Papua Barat, Indonesia. Additional data on distribution are provided for 17 species of Cylapinae, Deraeocorinae, Mirinae, Orthotylinae and Phylinae. Trigonotylustenuis is cited for the first time from Papua New Guinea.

Psallus thomashenryi sp. n. and Psallus lucanicus from Turkey (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Miridae)

Psallus (Psallus) thomashenryisp. n. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Phylinae: Phylini: Phylina) is described from southern Anatolia, Turkey. Illustrations of the dorsal habitus and male genitalia are provided. Its habitus is similar to other uniformly orange species of the subgenus Psallus Fieber, 1858, particularly P.asthenicus Seidenstücker, 1966 from which it can be easily distinguished by the combination of extremely small size (2.3 mm in both sexes) and different morphology of the vesica. Psallus (Psallus) lucanicus Wagner, 1968 is recorded for the first time from Turkey. Psallus (Psallus) aurora (Mulsant & Rey, 1852) is removed from the list of Turkish fauna based on a reevaluation of the voucher specimen. An updated checklist of the species of Psallus known to occur in Turkey is provided. The relevance of Anatolia and the Syro-anatolian-transcaucasian region in the Palearctic distribution of Psallus is discussed. The westernmost record of another mirid, Plagiognathusmarivanensis Linnavuori, 2010, is provided.

Henryognathusthomasi, a new genus and new species of Arctostaphylos-feeding plant bug from western North America (Miridae, Phylinae, Phylini)

Henryognathus, new genus, with the single included new species H.thomasi, is described from western North America. The taxon is recorded as feeding on species of Arctostaphylos (Ericaceae) in California and Arizona. Coloration and many morphological attributes are similar to species of Plagiognathus Fieber, but the structure of the male genitalia is distinctive.

A synopsis of the bryocorine tribes (Heteroptera : Miridae : Bryocorinae): key, diagnoses, hosts and distributional patterns

The higher classification of the mirid subfamily Bryocorinae has received comparatively little attention. It is not highly species-rich in comparison with other mirid subfamilies but does exhibit extraordinary morphological heterogeneity. In this work we provide a synthesis of the subfamily on a global basis, providing a new key and updated diagnoses of supraspecific taxa. Five tribes are recognised: Bryocorini, Dicyphini, Eccritotarsini, Felisacini and Monaloniini. The genus Campyloneura Fieber is transferred from the tribe Dicyphini to the Eccritotarsini. Analysis of distributional patterns and a survey of host plant associations are provided. Available data on distribution of the main bryocorine lineages are summarised in tabular form and evaluated using UPGMA methods, and geographically structured patterns were detected. The synthesis will enable users to identify bryocorines to tribal level with confidence and provides a classificatory framework for future revisionary and phylogenetic studies.

An unusual new species of Hallodapomimus Herczek, 2000 from the Eocene Baltic amber (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Miridae, Phylinae)

Hallodapomimusantennatus sp. n. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera, Miridae, Phylinae, Hallodapini) is described from a macropterous female found in Eocene Baltic amber. The new species can be recognized readily from the other species of the genus, mainly due to its unusual second antennal segment. A key for the identification of all known fossil Hallodapini is presented.
