ADHD symptoms and peer relations of children in a community sample: Examining associated problems, self-perceptions, and gender differences

This study examined children's peer relations in relation to gender, symptoms of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), associated behaviour problems, prosociality, and self-perceptions, in a community sample. Six hundred and thirty-five 12-year-old children (314 girls) provided peer nominations and rated feelings of loneliness and self-perceptions regarding global self-worth and behavioural conduct. We obtained teacher ratings of ADHD symptoms, conduct and internalising problems, and prosociality. ADHD symptoms, conduct problems, internalising problems, and low levels of prosociality were all related to higher levels of peer dislike. Despite ADHD symptoms being related to more peer dislike, children with high levels of ADHD symptoms did not report more feelings of loneliness. The self-perceptions of children with high levels of ADHD were not related to peer dislike. Although high levels of ADHD symptoms were not related to peer dislike in girls, peers tolerated higher levels of ADHD symptoms among boys than among girls, providing support for the “gender appropriateness hypothesis” regarding the impact and influence of ADHD symptomatology upon the peer relations of children within a community sample.

What is the Social Impact of ADHD in Girls? A Multi-Method Assessment

This study explores the social impact of ADHD, with and without opposition-defiant behaviour (ADHD+ODD (n= 22) and ADHD-only (n= 18)), in 9- to 12- year old girls compared to girls without ADHD (n= 40). Girls played a computer game involving simulated players, and mothers and teachers completed rating scales. In general, mothers and teachers saw girls with ADHD+ODD as more overtly and relationally aggressive and less prosocial than girls with ADHD-only, who were seen as more overtly and relationally aggressive and less prosocial than control girls. On the computer game, girls with ADHD+ODD were more overtly aggressive, more directly relationally aggressive, and showed less skilled behaviour than the other groups. Girls with ADHD-only showed less covert, indirect relational aggression and more socially awkward interactions than girls in the control group on the computer game. In all, the results indicate that girls with ADHD, with and without ODD behaviour, engage in socially detrimental behaviours.

Are ADHD gender patterns moderated by sample source?

OBJECTIVE

To examine whether ADHD gender patterns with respect to social-demographic characteristics, comorbidity, and impairment vary as a function of service use for emotional or behavioral problems.

METHOD

Two hundred and seventy-nine males and 119 females meeting ADHD symptom criteria identified in a nationally representative sample of Australian youth ages 6 to 17 are stratified according to whether they had attended a service in the previous 6 months.

RESULTS

ADHD gender patterns vary across service use on only 2 of the 31 comparisons made. The two exceptions were child's age at interview (females were older than males among service attendees but younger among nonattendees) and depressive disorders (females had higher rates than males among service attendees but lower rates among nonattendees).

CONCLUSION

Systematic differences in methods of case identification rather than sample source may be responsible for the discrepant ADHD patterns found between clinic and community-based studies.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: an overview of the etiology and a review of the literature relating to the correlates and lifecourse outcomes for men and women

This paper provides a summary of the current conceptualization of what AD/HD is, and its etiology, and then reviews some of the recent literature on the correlates and lifecourse outcomes for individuals diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). The intention is to synthesize that which is known, and to identify important gaps in the literature and knowledge base, which secondary analysis of prospective large-scale longitudinal cohorts, tracking individuals from birth to adulthood, could help to fill. This review highlights the fact that such datasets are rare and that their analysis offers important opportunities for advancing knowledge, particularly of the adult outcomes of childhood AD/HD.

Etiology of sex differences in the prevalence of ADHD: an examination of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity

Several studies have examined the predictions of two models (i.e., the polygenic multiple threshold (PMT) model and the constitutional variability (CV) model) developed to explain sex differences in the prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the results of these studies are conflicting. Although there is substantial evidence that two distinct, moderately correlated symptom dimensions (inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity) underlie ADHD symptoms, all of these studies have examined ADHD as a unidimensional construct. Therefore, we tested the PMT and CV models for the two ADHD symptom dimensions separately. Dizygotic twins or siblings of girls with ADHD had a higher number of ADHD symptoms than twins or siblings of boys with ADHD. This evidence for the PMT model and against the CV model was found for both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, but became weaker for hyperactivity-impulsivity as symptom severity increased.

Trainee nursery teachers' perceptions of disruptive behaviour disorders; the effect of sex of child on judgements of typicality and severity

BACKGROUND

Adults' perceptions of children with disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs), which usually interfere with socialization and referral of children to mental health services, might differ according to the child's sex. Given the importance of (a) the interactions between these children and their educators, and (b) early identification and referral, the impact of the child's sex on adults' perceptions is an important factor to consider.

AIM

To examine the role of gender-related expectations in the identification and referral of childhood DBDs by trainee nursery teachers.

SAMPLE

One hundred and fifty-eight female trainee nursery teachers (mean age = 20 years) at the Department of Early Childhood Education in Athens.

METHOD

Trainee nursery teachers' perceptions of male and female children with DBDs were explored using a Greek version of the Parental Account of the Causes of Childhood Problems Questionnaire. Eighty-one participants answered questions about a set of disruptive behaviours ascribed to a boy and 77 about the same behaviour ascribed to a girl.

RESULTS

DBDs ascribed to girls were considered to be no more severe or of greater concern than those ascribed to boys. Judgements of severity were related to concern in the same way for boys and girls. However, DBDs were regarded as less typical for girls than boys.

CONCLUSIONS

The child's sex affected trainee teachers' judgements of typicality, but not severity, of children's behaviour problems. The implications of this finding for socialization practices and referral attitudes are discussed.

The social behaviors and peer expectation of girls with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and comparison girls

Investigated self-described social goals, self-generated actions, and perceived peer responses to hypothetical vignettes, as well as observed social behavior and peer sociometric status, in an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of girls with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 49) and comparison girls (n = 30). Although we found no differences between the social goals of girls with ADHD and comparison participants, girls with ADHD generated higher rates of aggressive responses to the hypothetical vignettes than did comparison girls, whereas comparison girls generated a larger number of negotiating behaviors than did the ADHD sample. The ADHD participants anticipated negative peer responses, whereas comparison girls predicted positive reactions from peers. Importantly, these perceived peer responses showed associations with girls' naturalistic social behaviors and peer sociometric status. Several pertinent predictions held with control of ADHD versus comparison status. Social cognitions appear to be relevant in the investigation of ADHD in girls.

A meta-analytic review of gender differences in ADHD

The present study examined gender differences in ADHD through a meta-analysis. Effect size estimates for the primary symptoms and correlates of ADHD were calculated in an attempt to replicate and extend a previous meta-analysis on gender differences in the disorder. Relatively lenient inclusion criteria were used in order to maximize the number of studies included in the effect sizes. The results indicated that in comparison to ADHD boys, ADHD girls had lower ratings on hyperactivity, inattention, impulsivity, and externalizing problems. In addition, ADHD girls had greater intellectual impairments and more internalizing problems than ADHD boys. Overall, the results of the current meta-analysis indicated general agreement with the previous meta-analysis. The clinical implications of these gender differences and future research considerations are discussed.
