Abstract
BackgroundHearing loss (HL) is one of the main medical complications for Turner Syndrome (TS) patients, with an earlier presentation and higher incidence than normal women. However, the etiology of HL in TS is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the hearing status of TS patients in China and the influencing factors, so as to provide a theoretical basis for early intervention treatment for TS patients with HL.MethodsIn total 46 female patients aged 14–32 diagnosed with TS received tympanic membrane and audiological examinations, including pure tone audiometry and tympanometry. In addition, the effects of karyotype, sex hormone levels, thyroid function, insulin, blood lipids, bone mineral density, age and other factors on hearing levels were analyzed, and the possible risk factors associated with HL in TS patients were explored.ResultsIn 9 patients (19.6%) had HL, including 1 (2.2%) with mild conductive hearing loss, 5 (10.9%) with mild sensorineural hearing loss, 3 (6.5%) with moderate sensorineural hearing loss. TS is often associated with age-related mid-frequency and high-frequency HL, and the incidence of HL increases with age. Compared with other karyotypes, patients with 45, X haplotype have an increased risk of mid-frequency HL.ConclusionsTherefore, karyotype may be a predictor of hearing problems in TS.

Abstract
Background Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of peripheral vestibular vertigo. Although BPPV is benign, its underlying mechanisms are complicated, and patients diagnosed with BPPV are significantly affected by it in their daily lives. Hence, this study's purpose was to investigate global trends and frontiers in the field of BPPV. Methods We searched the research literature published from 2002 to 2021 on BPPV using two databases from the Web of Science Core Collection, and we conducted a bibliometric and visualization analysis. Bibliometric tools were used to perform co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analyses of countries or regions, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, and references. Results In all, 1,419 publications from 4,594 authors, 1,542 institutions, and 65 countries or regions with 71 subject categories were included in the study. The number of articles increased gradually from 2002 to 2021. Seoul National University, the University of Munich, and Osaka University were among the leading institutions with the most publications, while United States of America, South Korea, and China were the leading countries. JS Kim was the most prolific author, Otology & Neurotology was the most prolific journal, and Otorhinolaryngology was the most published subject category. The five most frequently occurring keywords were BPPV, vertigo, dizziness, nystagmus, and management and the top research hot spots were osteoporosis and vitamin D. Conclusion This study systematically analyzed trends in global scientific research on BPPV. The academic understanding of BPPV has improved significantly over the last two decades, with osteoporosis and vitamin D the two main research hot spots in the field of BPPV in recent years. These findings provide direction for current research to grasp the trends and research frontiers of current research.

Abstract
ObjectivesThis study aims to explore the relationship between bone-turnover biomarkers and the recovery of SSNHL to provide clues for further improvements in etiological research and predictors.MethodsThe medical history, hearing thresholds, biomarkers of bone-turnover, and related hormones of 117 SSNHL patients were collected prospectively between August 2018 and December 2021. Linear correlation and logistic regression models were applied to examine the association between bone-turnover biomarkers and the prognosis of SSNHL.ResultsAge, the incidence of vertigo, pure tone average of the impaired frequencies (PTAimpairedfre), and the levels of bone turnover [including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), β-carboxy terminal crosslinked telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX), and N-terminal-midfragment of osteocalcin (N-MID)] were higher in the nonresponders than responders (P < 0.05). Logistic regression showed that the age (OR = 1.035, P = 0.027), time to treatment (OR = 1.157, P = 0.038), PTAimpairedfre (OR = 1.031, P = 0.008), and β-CTX (OR = 1.004, P = 0.001) were independent risk factors for the prognosis of SSNHL. In the women SSNHL subgroup, age, postmenopause percentage, PTAimpairedfre, the activity of ALP, levels of β-CTX, and N-MID were significantly higher in the nonresponders than the responders (P < 0.05). Compared to the men SSNHL subgroup, β-CTX has a higher correlation coefficient and predictive efficiency in the women SSNHL subgroup, and logistic regression showed that β-CTX (OR = 1.004, P = 0.004) was an independent risk factor for the women SSNHL.ConclusionsBone-turnover biomarkers are risk factors for poor prognosis in SSNHL, especially β-CTX. The differences were significant in women SSNHL, which may be related to the rapid regression of estrogen after menopause that leads to the occurrence of osteoporosis with a high conversion rate.

Abstract
The present nested case−control study evaluated the impact of previous proton pump inhibitor (PPI) prescription on the risk of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). A ≥40-year-old Korean population was included. A total of 34,441 patients with BPPV was matched with 137,764 comparison participants for demographic and socioeconomic factors. Previous histories of PPI use and PPI prescription dates were compared between the BPPV and comparison groups. The odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of PPI use for BPPV were calculated using a logistic regression. The demographic and socioeconomic factors and comorbidities were adjusted in the adjusted model. Both current and past PPI users were associated with higher odds for BPPV than non-PPI users (adjusted OR (aOR) = 3.57, 95% CI = 3.33−3.83, and p < 0.001 for current PPI users and aOR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.64−1.89, and p < 0.001 for past PPI users). In addition, longer dates of PPI use were related to higher odds for BPPV (aOR (95% CI) = 1.95 [1.81−2.10] for ≥1 day and <30 days of PPI prescription, <2.88 [2.68−3.10] for ≥30 days and <365 days of PPI prescription, and <3.45 [3.19−3.73] for ≥365 days of PPI prescription). PPI use was linked with an elevated risk of BPPV in the adult population. The odds for BPPV were higher in patients with a longer duration of PPI use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to investigate the risk of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) in patients with osteoporosis. METHODS Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort from 2002 to 2015 were collected. Participants ≥ 40 years old were enrolled, and the history of osteoporosis was evaluated. The 62,328 osteoporosis patients were matched for age, sex, income, and region of residence with 62,328 control participants. The occurrence of TMD was assessed in both the osteoporosis and control groups during the follow-up period. Stratified Cox proportional hazard analyses for TMD were conducted for the osteoporosis and control groups. The hazard ratios (HRs) of osteoporosis for TMD were further analyzed by age and sex subgroups. RESULTS A total of 1.2% (725/61,320) of the osteoporosis patients and 0.6% (339/61,320) of the control participants had TMD (P<0.001). Osteoporosis was associated with an elevated HR of TMD (adjusted HR=1.96, 95% CI=1.72-2.23, P<0.001). Among the age and sex subgroups, the < 60-year-old mal\e group demonstrated an adjusted HR of osteoporosis for TMD as high as 4.47 (95% CI=1.17-17.12, P=0.029). Other age and sex subgroups also showed a higher HR for TMD associated with osteoporosis (adjusted HR=2.30, 95% CI=1.90-2.78, P<0.001 for the ≥ 60-year-old female group). CONCLUSION Osteoporosis was related to a higher risk of TMD in the adult population. A prominent association of osteoporosis with TMD was noted in middle-aged men and older women.

Abstract
An association between anemia and an increased risk of osteoporosis has been suggested. The goal of this study was to estimate the association of hemoglobin (Hb) level with osteoporosis. A total of 69,760 osteoporosis patients aged ≥ 40 years old from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Screening Cohort were enrolled. From an identical cohort database, 69,760 comparison participants were randomly selected. Hb levels before the onset of osteoporosis were evaluated. The association of Hb level with osteoporosis was analyzed using a conditional logistic regression model adjusted for obesity, smoking status, alcohol consumption, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, and the Charlson comorbidity index score. Fifteen percent of the osteoporosis group and 14.17% of the comparison group had anemia. The Hb level was associated with 0.98-fold lower odds for osteoporosis (95% confidence intervals = 0.97-0.99, p < 0.001). A low Hb level was associated with a high risk of osteoporosis in the adult population. There was a consistent association between a low Hb level and osteoporosis in patients with comorbidities.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to estimate the risk of hip and spinal fracture after distal radius fracture. Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service—National Sample Cohort were collected between 2002 and 2013. A total of 8013 distal radius fracture participants who were 50 years of age or older were selected. The distal radius fracture participants were matched for age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical history in a 1:4 ratio with control participants. In the subgroup analysis, participants were stratified according to age group (50–59, 60–69, or ≥70 years) and sex (male or female). Distal radius fracture patients had a 1.51-fold and 1.40-fold higher incidence of hip fracture and spinal fracture in the adjusted models, respectively. Among males, patients of all ages had a significantly higher incidence of hip fracture, and those who were 50 to 69 years of age had a significantly higher incidence of spinal fracture. Among females, those older than 70 years had a significantly higher incidence of hip fracture, and patients of all ages had a significantly higher incidence of spinal fracture. Previous distal radius fracture has a significant impact on the risk of subsequent hip and spinal fractures.

Abstract
UNLABELLED A total of 25,306 psoriasis participants were matched to 101,224 controls, and the occurrence of osteoporosis was analyzed. Additionally, 79,212 osteoporosis patients were matched to 79,212 controls and a previous history of psoriasis was analyzed. Psoriasis increased the risk of osteoporosis among participants aged ≥ 40 years. INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between psoriasis and osteoporosis using two different studies. METHODS Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort of participants aged ≥ 40 years were collected from 2002 to 2013. Psoriasis and osteoporosis were included using International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes. In study I (a follow-up study), a total of 25,306 psoriasis participants were matched to 101,224 controls with respect to age, sex, income, and region of residence, and the occurrence of osteoporosis was analyzed. Crude (simple) and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were analyzed using a stratified Cox proportional hazard model. In study II (a nested case-control study), a total of 79,212 osteoporosis patients were matched to 79,212 controls and a previous history of psoriasis was analyzed. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were analyzed using a conditional logistic regression analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to age group and sex. RESULTS The adjusted HR of osteoporosis was 1.09 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-1.13, P < 0.001) in study I. In the subgroup analysis according to age and sex, the results were consistent except for ≥ 60-year-old women. The adjusted OR of psoriasis was 1.21 (95% CI = 1.16-1.27, P < 0.001) in study II. All subgroups demonstrated high adjusted ORs of osteoporosis for psoriasis. CONCLUSIONS Psoriasis increased the risk of osteoporosis among participants aged ≥ 40 years in Korea.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) was related to a 1.28 times higher risk of osteoporosis. In addition, osteoporosis was associated with a 1.34 times higher risk of BPPV. This bidirectional relation was maintained after adjusting past medical histories and lifestyle factors, including obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the reciprocal association between BPPV and osteoporosis. In subgroup analyses, only women showed a reciprocal association between BPPV and osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION A previous population cohort study suggested an association between osteoporosis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional association between BPPV and osteoporosis. METHODS The Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort data from 2002 to 2013 were used. In study I, the 50,897 osteoporosis patients were 1:1 matched with control I participants for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The previous histories of BPPV were analyzed in both groups using conditional logistic regression analysis. In study II, 9621 BPPV patients were 1:4 matched with control II participants. The previous histories of osteoporosis were analyzed in both groups using conditional logistic regression analysis. According to age and sex, subgroup analyses were achieved in both studies I and II. RESULTS A total of 1.6% (822/50,897) of osteoporosis patients and 1.3% (644/50,897) of control I participants had BPPV. The osteoporosis patients demonstrated a 1.28 times higher chance of developing BPPV (95% confidence intervals [95% CI] = 1.16-1.42, P < 0.001). In study II, 21.2% (2040/9621) of BPPV patients and 17.6% (6790/38,484) of control II participants had osteoporosis. The BPPV patients showed 1.34 times higher chance of having osteoporosis (95% CI = 1.26-1.43, P < 0.001). In the analysis of the women subgroup, these relations were reliable. CONCLUSION Osteoporosis patients had increased odds of having BPPV. On the other hand, BPPV patients had increased odds of having osteoporosis. This bidirectional relation was consistent only in the women subgroup.

Abstract
A few studies have explored the association between depression and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). This study was aimed to investigate the reciprocal relations between SSNHL and depression using a nationwide cohort of the Korean population. Subjects aged > 20 years from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort were enrolled from 2002 to 2013. In study I, a total of 60,178 depressed patients were matched 1:4 with 242,872 control I subjects. In study II, a total of 4,328 SSNHL patients were 1:4 matched with 17,312 control II subjects. They were matched for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was adjusted. Subgroup analysis was performed according to age and sex. The crude and adjusted CCI hazard ratios (HRs) of SSNHL in depressed patients (study I) and depression in SSNHL patients (study II) were analyzed using the stratified Cox proportional-hazard model. In study I, the depression group exhibited an elevated adjusted HR of SSNHL 1.16 times that of the control group (confidence interval [95% CI] = 1.02–1.31, P < 0.023). The middle-aged women subgroup demonstrated an increased risk of SSNHL within the depression group. In study II, the SSNHL group showed a higher adjusted HR of depression 1.29 times that of control II group (95% CI = 1.06–1.57, P = 0.010). The middle-aged women subgroup showed an elevated risk of depression in the SSNHL group. The risk of SSNHL was elevated in the depressed patients and the risk of depression was increased in the SSNHL patients.

Abstract
Objectives Chronic inflammatory disease might affect osteoporosis; however, few studies have reported the association between herpes zoster and osteoporosis. The goal of this study was to estimate the association between herpes zoster and osteoporosis in Korean residents. Methods The Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, which includes individuals aged ≥ 50 years, was assessed from 2002 to 2013. In total, 68,492 osteoporosis participants were matched with 68,492 control participants at a ratio of 1:1 by age, sex, income, and region of residence. We assayed the prior histories of herpes zoster in the osteoporosis and control groups. The diagnoses of herpes zoster and osteoporosis were based on ICD-10 codes and claim codes. Crude and adjusted models of odds ratios (ORs) were explored using conditional logistic regression analyses, and the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed. The participants were stratified according to age, sex, income, and region of residence. Subgroup analyses were performed to investigate the role of age and sex. Results The rate of herpes zoster in the osteoporosis group (5.1% [3,487/68,492]) was higher than that in the control group (4.0% [2,738/68,492]). The adjusted OR of herpes zoster in the osteoporosis group was 1.17 (95% CI = 1.11-1.24). In the subgroup analyses, the adjusted OR was 1.34 (95% CI = 1.01-1.78) among males aged < 65 years, 1.20 (95% CI = 1.12-1.29) among females aged < 65 years, and 1.19 (95% CI = 1.04-1.36) among males aged ≥ 65 years. Conclusion The ORs of herpes zoster were increased among the osteoporosis patients. This correlation was reliable in all subgroups by age and sex except group of women ≥ 65 years old.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Pregnancy-induced systemic physiological changes appear to be associated with reversible hearing changes in pregnant/postpartum women. However, most studies are case reports due to the rare occurrence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) during pregnancy. We aimed to evaluate the risk of SSNHL during the pregnancy and postpartum periods. STUDY DESIGN A longitudinal case-control study using a nationwide population cohort. METHODS Using the Korean National Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, we collected data from 63,331 pregnant/postpartum participants who were matched 1:2 by age, income, region of residence, and medical history with 126,662 control participants. We included participants who had International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes indicating delivery (O80-O84). For SSNHL (ICD-10 code H91.2), we included only those participants who underwent audiometry and were treated with steroids. The incidence of SSNHL was measured for the periods corresponding to pregnancy (conception through delivery) up to 1 year postpartum in the pregnant participants. RESULTS During the pregnancy period, the SSNHL rate was not higher (19.5 per 100,000) compared with the control group (60.7 per 100,000). The adjusted odds ratio of SSNHL during pregnancy was 0.32 (95% confidence interval: 0.16-0.65, P = .002). The SSNHL rate during the postpartum period (37.9 per 100,000) was similar to that of the control group (36.3 per 100,000). The adjusted odds ratio of SSNHL during the postpartum period was 1.04 (95% confidence interval: 0.64-1.71, P = .867). The risk of SSNHL in the patients during the pregnancy/postpartum period was not higher than that in controls, regardless of age and specific subperiod. Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to further clarify the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and osteoporosis in a Korean population. METHODS The Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, with subjects ≥50 years old, was assessed for the time period 2002-2013. In total, 68,459 osteoporosis participants were matched with 68,459 control participants at a ratio of 1:1 with respect to age, sex, income group, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. We analyzed previous histories of CRS with/without nasal polyp in the osteoporosis and control groups. CRS and osteoporosis were included using codes from the International Classification of Diseases-tenth edition and claim codes. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were analyzed using conditional logistic regression analyses. The 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were then calculated. Subgroup analyses were performed according to age and sex. RESULTS The rate of CRS with/without nasal polyp was higher in the osteoporosis group (3.0% [2078 of 68,459]) compared with the control group (2.0% [1344 of 68,459]) (p < 0.001). The adjusted OR of CRS with/without nasal polyp was 1.47 (95% CI, 1.37-1.58; p < 0.001) in the osteoporosis group. The results of the subgroup analyses were consistent. CONCLUSION The ORs of CRS were increased in osteoporosis participants. This relation was consistent in all age and sex groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The previous studies suggested an association between osteoporosis and sudden sensory neural hearing loss (SSNHL). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between osteoporosis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort of participants who were ≥ 50 years old were collected from 2002 to 2013. A total of 13,484 BPPV participants were matched with respect to age group, sex, income group, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia to 53,936 controls. In both the BPPV and control groups, the previous histories of osteoporosis were evaluated. Crude (simple) and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of osteoporosis for BPPV were analyzed using unconditional logistic regression analyses. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to age, sex, and BPPV frequency. RESULTS A total of 18.64% (2514/13,464) of the BPPV group and 12.21% (6589/53,936) of the control group had a history of osteoporosis (P < 0.001). The adjusted OR of osteoporosis for BPPV was 1.29 (95% CI = 1.23-1.35, P < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis according to age and sex, the ≥ 70-year-old men did not demonstrate a high adjusted OR of osteoporosis for BPPV. All other age and sex subgroups demonstrated high adjusted ORs of osteoporosis for BPPV. CONCLUSIONS Osteoporosis increased the risk of BPPV in the population aged ≥ 50 years. The OR of osteoporosis was higher in the frequent BPPV group than in the less frequent BPPV group.
