Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neighborhood disadvantage has been shown to impact health and cognitive outcomes, while morphological similarity network (MSN) can elucidate structural morphological patterns underlying cognitive functions. We hypothesized MSNs could provide cortical patterns linked with neighborhood disadvantage and cognitive function, explaining the potential risk of cognitive impairment in disadvantaged neighborhoods. METHODS For cognitively unimpaired participants from the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center or Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (n = 524), and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort (n = 100), neighborhood disadvantage was obtained using Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and its association with cognitive performance and MSN features was analyzed using linear regression and mediation analysis. RESULTS Neighborhood disadvantage was associated with worse cognitive performance on memory, executive function, processing speed, and preclinical Alzheimer's tests on both datasets. Local morphological organization of predominantly the frontal and temporal regions showed association trends with ADI. DISCUSSION Morphological patterns associated with ADI, in-part, may explain the risk for poor cognitive functioning in a neighborhood disadvantaged population. HIGHLIGHTS Social determinants of health such as neighborhood context can be studied using ADI. High neighborhood disadvantage was related to worse performance on category fluency, implicit learning speed, story recall memory and pre-clinical Alzheimer's cognitive composite. In this exploratory study, using morphological brain networks that indicate similarity in distribution of cortical thickness between regions, we observed that centrality of predominantly frontal and temporal regions was marginally linked with neighborhood disadvantage status and also partially mediated its association with preclinical Alzheimer's composite test. There is a potential role for considering neighborhood status in early screening of cognitive impairment and dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Monolingual cognitive assessments are standard for bilinguals; the value of bilingual assessment is unknown. Since declines in animal naming accompany memory declines in dementia, we examined the association between bilingual animal naming and memory among bilingual Mexican American (MA) older adults. METHODS Bilingual MA (n = 155) completed the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) in a Texas community study. Regressions included HCAP memory score (English) as the outcome and English and Spanish animal naming trials as independent variables; demographics and language dominance were covariates. RESULTS English animal naming (b = 0.06, P = 0.004) was more reliably associated with memory than Spanish (b = 0.05, P = 0.06). Considered together, only English (b = 0.05, P = 0.02) was associated with memory, not Spanish (b = 0.01, P = 0.63). Conclusions: Spanish animal naming did not uniquely add to English animal naming in its association with memory among bilingual older MA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often leads to cognitive impairments, particularly regarding working memory (WM). This meta-analysis aims to examine the impact of TBI on WM, taking into account moderating factors which has received little attention in previous research, such as severity of injury, the different domains of Baddeley's multi-component model, and the interaction between these two factors, as well as the interaction with other domains of executive functions. METHOD Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, a systematic review and meta-analysis searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and PsycNET for studies with objective WM measures. Multiple meta-analyses were performed to compare the effects of TBI severity on different WM components. Twenty-four English, peer-reviewed articles, mostly cross-sectional were included. RESULTS TBI significantly impairs general WM and all Baddeley's model components, most notably the Central Executive (d' = 0.74). Severity categories, mild-moderate and moderate-severe, were identified. Impairment was found across severities, with "moderate-severe" demonstrating the largest effect size (d' = 0.81). Individuals with moderate-severe TBI showed greater impairments in the Central Executive and Episodic Buffer compared to those with mild-moderate injury, whereas no such differences were found for the Phonological Loop and Visuospatial Sketchpad. CONCLUSIONS These findings enhance our understanding of WM deficits in varying severities of TBI, highlighting the importance of assessing and treating WM in clinical practice and intervention planning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Theory and research indicated that executive functioning (EF) correlated with, preceded, and stemmed from worry in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The present secondary analysis (Zainal & Newman, 2023b) thus determined whether EF domains mediated the effect of a 14-day (5 prompts/day) mindfulness ecological momentary intervention (MEMI) against a self-monitoring control (SM) for GAD. METHOD Participants (N = 110) diagnosed with GAD completed self-reported (Attentional Control Scale, GAD Questionnaire, Perseverative Cognitions Questionnaire) and performance-based tests (Letter-Number Sequencing, Stroop, Trail Making Test-B, Verbal Fluency) at baseline, post-treatment, and one-month follow-up (1MFU). Causal mediation analyses determined if pre-post changes in EF domains preceded and mediated the effect of MEMI against SM on pre-1MFU changes in GAD severity and trait repetitive negative thinking (RNT). RESULTS MEMI was more efficacious than SM in improving pre-post inhibition (β = -2.075, 95% [-3.388, -0.762], p = .002), working memory (β = 0.512, 95% [0.012, 1.011], p = .045), and set-shifting (β = -2.916, 95% [-5.142, -0.691], p = .010) but not verbal fluency and attentional control. Within groups, MEMI but not SM produced improvements in all examined pre-post EF outcomes except attentional control. Only pre-post improvements in inhibition mediated the effect of MEMI against SM on pre-1MFU reductions in GAD severity (β = -0.605, 95% [-1.357, -0.044], p = .030; proportion mediated = 7.1%) and trait RNT (β = -0.024, 95% [-0.054, -0.001], p = .040; proportion mediated = 7.4%). These patterns remained after conducting sensitivity analyses with non-linear mediator-outcome relations. CONCLUSIONS Optimizing MEMI for GAD might entail specifically boosting inhibition plausibly by augmenting it with dialectical behavioral therapy, encouraging high-intensity physical exercises, and targeting negative emotional contrast avoidance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence for the association between purpose in life and cognitive health is primarily from North American and European samples. This study evaluates this association in a large sample from Malaysia, an upper-middle-income country in Southeast Asia. METHODS Participants (N = 5,579) from the Malaysian Ageing and Retirement Study reported on their purpose in life and subjective memory and were administered tasks that measured episodic memory, verbal fluency, and overall cognitive function. RESULTS Purpose was associated with better subjective memory (β=.13), episodic memory (β=.06), verbal fluency (β=.12), and overall cognitive function (β=.07) (ps < .001). The associations were similar across sex and retirement status; purpose was more strongly related to subjective memory and overall cognitive function among older participants. Behavioral/social factors accounted for up to one-third of the associations, but all associations remained statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS The positive association between purpose and cognition generalizes to a middle-income country in Southeast Asia. Similar to Western samples, behavioral and social factors accounted for part but not all the association. More research is needed in lower- and other middle-income countries to fully evaluate generalizability. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Purpose may help support healthier cognitive aging across diverse populations and be a useful target to improve cognitive aging outcomes.

Abstract
Objective Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with worse health and cognitive outcomes. Morphological similarity network (MSN) is a promising approach to elucidate cortical network patterns underlying complex cognitive functions. We hypothesized that MSNs could capture intricate changes in cortical patterns related to neighborhood disadvantage and cognitive function, potentially explaining some of the risk for later life cognitive impairment among individuals who live in disadvantaged contexts. Methods This cross-sectional study included cognitively unimpaired participants (n=524, age=62.96±8.377, gender (M:F)=181:343, ADI(L:H) =450,74) from the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center or Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention. Neighborhood disadvantage status was obtained using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). Cognitive performance was assessed through six tests evaluating memory, executive functioning, and the modified preclinical Alzheimer's cognitive composite (mPACC). Morphological Similarity Networks (MSN) were constructed for each participant based on the similarity in distribution of cortical thickness of brain regions, followed by computation of local and global network features. We used linear regression to examine ADI associations with cognitive scores and MSN features. The mediating effect of MSN features on the relationship between ADI and cognitive performance was statistically assessed. Results Neighborhood disadvantage showed negative association with category fluency, implicit learning speed, story recall and mPACC scores, indicating worse cognitive function among those living in more disadvantaged neighborhoods. Local network features of frontal and temporal brain regions differed based on ADI status. Centrality of left lateral orbitofrontal region showed a partial mediating effect between association of neighborhood disadvantage and story recall performance. Conclusion Our findings suggest differences in local cortical organization by neighborhood disadvantage, which also partially mediated the relationship between ADI and cognitive performance, providing a possible network-based mechanism to, in-part, explain the risk for poor cognitive functioning associated with disadvantaged neighborhoods. Future work will examine the exposure to neighborhood disadvantage on structural organization of the brain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Irregular word reading has been used to estimate premorbid intelligence in Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, reading models highlight the core influence of semantic abilities on irregular word reading, which shows early decline in AD. The primary objective of this study is to ascertain whether irregular word reading serves as an indicator of cognitive and semantic decline in AD, potentially discouraging its use as a marker for premorbid intellectual abilities. METHOD Six hundred eighty-one healthy controls (HC), 104 subjective cognitive decline, 290 early and 589 late mild cognitive impairment (EMCI, LMCI) and 348 AD participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative were included. Irregular word reading was assessed with the American National Adult Reading Test (AmNART). Multiple linear regressions were conducted predicting AmNART score using diagnostic category, general cognitive impairment and semantic tests. A generalized logistic mixed-effects model predicted correct reading using extracted psycholinguistic characteristics of each AmNART words. Deformation-based morphometry was used to assess the relationship between AmNART scores and voxel-wise brain volumes, as well as with the volume of a region of interest placed in the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL), a region implicated in semantic memory. RESULTS EMCI, LMCI and AD patients made significantly more errors in reading irregular words compared to HC, and AD patients made more errors than all other groups. Across the AD continuum, as well as within each diagnostic group, irregular word reading was significantly correlated to measures of general cognitive impairment / dementia severity. Neuropsychological tests of lexicosemantics were moderately correlated to irregular word reading whilst executive functioning and episodic memory were respectively weakly and not correlated. Age of acquisition, a primarily semantic variable, had a strong effect on irregular word reading accuracy whilst none of the phonological variables significantly contributed. Neuroimaging analyses pointed to bilateral hippocampal and left ATL volume loss as the main contributors to decreased irregular word reading performances. CONCLUSIONS While the AmNART may be appropriate to measure premorbid intellectual abilities in cognitively unimpaired individuals, our results suggest that it captures current semantic decline in MCI and AD patients and may therefore underestimate premorbid intelligence. On the other hand, irregular word reading tests might be clinically useful to detect semantic impairments in individuals on the AD continuum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The utility of neuropsychological measurements as forerunners of Alzheimer's Disease Dementia (AD) in individuals with normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is undeniable. OBJECTIVES To assess the differential prognostic value of cognitive performance in older men versus women. DESIGN Longitudinal analysis of data acquired from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set. SETTINGS Data on older adults (≥60 years) were derived from 43 National Institute on Aging - funded Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers. PARTICIPANTS 10,073 cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults followed for 5.5±3.8 years and 3,925 participants with amnestic MCI monitored for 3.5±2.8 years. MEASUREMENTS The domains of episodic memory, verbal fluency, naming, attention, processing speed and executive function were assessed. Cox proportional hazards models examined associations between individual cognitive domains and AD incidence separately for each participant set. CU and MCI. These predictive models featured individual neuropsychological measures, sex, neuropsychological measure by sex interactions, as well as a number of crucial covariates. RESULTS Episodic memory and verbal fluency were differentially related to future AD among CU individuals, explaining a larger proportion of risk variance in women compared to men. On the other hand, naming, attention and executive function were differentially related to future AD among participants with MCI, accounting for a greater fraction of risk variance in men than women. CONCLUSION Cognitive performance is differentially related to risk of progressing to AD in men versus women without dementia.

Abstract
Background Early life adversity and psychiatric disorders are associated with earlier declines in neurocognitive abilities during adulthood. These declines may be preceded by changes in biological aging, specifically epigenetic age acceleration, providing an opportunity to uncover genome-wide biomarkers that identify individuals most likely to benefit from early screening and prevention. Methods Five unique epigenetic age acceleration clocks derived from peripheral blood were examined in relation to latent variables of general and speeded cognitive abilities across two independent cohorts: 1) the Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS; n = 86), a 30-year prospective cohort study of substantiated child sexual abuse and non-abused controls, and 2) the Biological Classification of Mental Disorders study (BeCOME; n = 313), an adult community cohort established based on psychiatric disorders. Results A faster pace of biological aging (DunedinPoAm) was associated with lower general cognitive abilities in both cohorts and slower speeded abilities in the BeCOME cohort. Acceleration in the Horvath clock was significantly associated with slower speeded abilities in the BeCOME cohort but not the FGDS. Acceleration in the Hannum clock and the GrimAge clock were not significantly associated with either cognitive ability. Accelerated PhenoAge was associated with slower speeded abilities in the FGDS but not the BeCOME cohort. Conclusions The present results suggest that epigenetic age acceleration has the potential to serve as a biomarker for neurocognitive decline in adults with a history of early life adversity or psychiatric disorders. Estimates of epigenetic aging may identify adults at risk of cognitive decline that could benefit from early neurocognitive screening.

Abstract
Semantic memory remains relatively stable with normal cognitive aging and declines in early stages of neurodegenerative disease. We measured electroencephalography (EEG) oscillatory correlates of semantic memory retrieval to examine the effects of normal and pathological aging. Twenty-nine cognitively healthy young adults (YA), 22 cognitively healthy aging adults (HA) and 20 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) completed a semantic memory retrieval task with concurrent EEG recording in which they judged whether two words (features of objects) led to retrieval of an object (retrieval) or not (non-retrieval). Event-related power changes contrasting the two conditions (retrieval vs. non-retrieval) within theta, alpha, low-beta and high-beta EEG frequency bands were examined for normal aging (YA vs. HA) and pathological aging effects (HA vs. MCI). With no behavioural differences between the two normal age groups, we found later theta and alpha event-related power differences between conditions only in YA and a high-beta event-related power difference only in HA. For pathological aging effects, with reduced accuracy in MCI, we found different EEG patterns of early event-related beta power differences between conditions in MCI compared with HA and an event-related low-beta power difference only in HA. Beta oscillations were correlated with behavioural performance only in HA. We conclude that the aging brain relies on faster (beta) oscillations during the semantic memory task. With pathological aging, retrieval accuracy declines and pattern of beta oscillation changes. The findings provide insights about age-related neural mechanisms underlying semantic memory and have implications for early detection of pathological aging.

Abstract
Since their development, verbal fluency tests (VFTs) have been used extensively throughout research and in clinical settings to assess a variety of cognitive functions in diverse populations. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), these tasks have proven particularly valuable in identifying the earliest forms of cognitive decline in semantic processing and have been shown to relate specifically to brain regions associated with the initial stages of pathological change. In recent years, researchers have developed more nuanced techniques to evaluate verbal fluency performance, extracting a wide range of cognitive metrics from these simple neuropsychological tests. Such novel techniques allow for a more detailed exploration of the cognitive processes underlying successful task performance beyond the raw test score. The versatility of VFTs and the richness of data they may provide, in light of their low cost and speed of administration, therefore, highlight their potential value both in future research as outcome measures for clinical trials and in a clinical setting as a screening measure for early detection of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Category verbal fluency test (CVFT) has been widely used to assess and monitor the cognitive capacities in epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Pronounced discrepancy in CVFT performance has been found in individuals with different cognitive statuses. This study aimed to combine the psychometric and morphometric approaches to decode the complex verbal fluency performance in senior adults with normal ageing and neurocognitive disorders. METHODS This study adopted a two-stage cross-sectional design involving quantitative analyses of neuropsychological and neuroimaging data. In study I, capacity- and speed-based measures of CVFT were developed to evaluate the verbal fluency performance in normal ageing seniors (n = 261), those with mild cognitive impairment (n = 204), and those with dementia (n = 23) whose age range is from 65 to 85 years. In study II, structural magnetic resonance imaging-informed gray matter volume (GMV) and brain age matrices were calculated in a subsample (n = 52) from Study I through surface-based morphometry analysis. With age and gender as covariates, Pearson's correlation analysis was used to examine the associations of CVFT measures, GMV, and brain age matrices. RESULTS Speed-based measures showed extensive and stronger associations with other cognitive functions than capacity-based measures. The component-specific CVFT measures showed shared and unique neural underpinnings with lateralized morphometric features. Moreover, the increased CVFT capacity was significantly correlated with younger brain age in mild neurocognitive disorder (NCD) patients. CONCLUSION We found that the diversity of verbal fluency performance in normal ageing and NCD patients could be explained by a combination of memory, language, and executive abilities. The component-specific measures and related lateralized morphometric correlates also highlight the underlying theoretical meaning of verbal fluency performance and its clinical utility in detecting and tracing the cognitive trajectory in individuals with accelerated ageing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Alzheimer's disease (AD) is highly heritable, and AD polygenic risk scores (AD-PRSs) have been derived from genome-wide association studies. However, the nature of genetic influences very early in the disease process is still not well known. Here we tested the hypothesis that an AD-PRSs would be associated with changes in episodic memory and executive function across late midlife in men who were cognitively unimpaired at their baseline midlife assessment.. METHOD We examined 1168 men in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA) who were cognitively normal (CN) at their first of up to three assessments across 12 years (mean ages 56, 62, and 68). Latent growth models of episodic memory and executive function were based on 6-7 tests/subtests. AD-PRSs were based on Kunkle et al. (Nature Genetics, 51, 414-430, 2019), p < 5×10-8 threshold. RESULTS AD-PRSs were correlated with linear slopes of change for both cognitive abilities. Men with higher AD-PRSs had steeper declines in both memory (r = -.19, 95% CI [-.35, -.03]) and executive functioning (r = -.27, 95% CI [-.49, -.05]). Associations appeared driven by a combination of APOE and non-APOE genetic influences. CONCLUSIONS Memory is most characteristically impaired in AD, but executive functions are one of the first cognitive abilities to decline in midlife in normal aging. This study is among the first to demonstrate that this early decline also relates to AD genetic influences, even in men CN at baseline.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cognitive trajectories of cognitively normal (CN) individuals rapidly progressing to Alzheimer's disease dementia (AD) have not been investigated. AIM To explore the preclinical pattern of cognitive performance heralding the rapid progression from normal cognition to AD. METHODS The HELIAD cohort underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessments (memory, language, attention, executive and visuo-perceptual functions) at baseline and after approximately 3-year intervals. The cognitive trajectories of those with normal cognition at baseline were explored according to the follow-up diagnosis using adjusted generalised estimating equations analyses. RESULTS A total of 932 predominantly female (61%), older (72.9 ± 4.9), CN participants were followed for 3.09 (± 0.83) years. Among them, 761 individuals remained CN, 29 progressed to AD and 142 developed MCI (33 single-domain amnestic, 41 multidomain amnestic, 37 single-domain non-amnestic and 31 multidomain non-amnestic). Those progressing to AD were already performing worse than the healthy reference in every single cognitive domain at baseline. Cognitive deficits ranged between ~ 0.5SD (attention, executive function and language) and ~ 1.0SD (memory and visuo-perceptual skills). Throughout the 3-year follow-up, memory constantly exhibited the most prominent impairment compared to the remaining cognitive domains while executive function diminished in the most abrupt fashion (~ 0.19SD yearly) separating from the remaining three cognitive functions before the development of full-blown AD. Heterogeneous patterns of cognitive decline clearly differentiated those progressing to MCI from those rapidly converting to AD, as well. DISCUSSION Poor performance in every cognitive domain may characterise cognitively normal individuals at high risk of fast progression to AD. CONCLUSION Strict neuropsychological cut-offs fail to detect a considerable number of individuals at high risk of rapid progression to AD.

Abstract
Demans tarama ve tanısı için klinik pratikte sıklıkla kısa tarama testleri kullanılmaktadır. Mini Mental Durum Testi (MMDT) en sık kullanılan testlerin başında gelmektedir. MMDT’nin demans için duyarlı olduğu bilinmektedir. Ancak, sağlıklı yaşlanma ile demans arasında bir geçiş evresi olarak kabul edilen Hafif Kognitif Bozukluk (HKB)’un ayırt edilmesinde ve Alzheimer Hastalığı tipi demans (AHD) ile HKB’nin ayırıcı tanısında MMDT çoğu zaman yeterli olmamaktadır. Kısa sürede uygulanabilen sözel akıcılık testleri (semantik ve fonemik) MMDT’ye alternatif ya da MMDT ile kullanıldığında HKB ve AH’nin erken evreleri için tanısal doğruluğu daha yüksek bir tarama testi elde edilebilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı MMDT, semantik ve fonemik akıcılık testlerinin ROC eğrisi analizleri ile belirlenen duyarlılık, özgüllük ve kesme puanı değerlerinin sunulmasıdır. Çalışmaya yaş-eğitim-cinsiyet açısından uyumlu 72 sağlıklı birey, 72 HKB ve 72 AHD’li birey dahil edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulguları MMDT’nin sağlıklı bireyleri ayırt etmede semantik ve fonemik akıcılıktan daha güçlü olduğunu, ancak HKB ve AH ayrımında özgüllüğünün semantik akıcılıktan düşük olduğunu göstermektedir. Tanı doğruluğunun artırılması için kısa zamanda uygulanabilen sözel akıcılık testlerinin, özellikle semantik akıcılık testinin klinik pratiğe eklenmesi yararlı olabilir.

Language performance as a prognostic factor for developing Alzheimer's clinical syndrome and mild cognitive impairment: Results from the population-based HELIAD cohort. Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is limited research on the prognostic value of language tasks regarding mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's clinical syndrome (ACS) development in the cognitively normal (CN) elderly, as well as MCI to ACS conversion. METHODS Participants were drawn from the population-based Hellenic Longitudinal Investigation of Aging and Diet (HELIAD) cohort. Language performance was evaluated via verbal fluency [semantic (SVF) and phonemic (PVF)], confrontation naming [Boston Naming Test short form (BNTsf)], verbal comprehension, and repetition tasks. An additional language index was estimated using both verbal fluency tasks: SVF-PVF discrepancy. Cox proportional hazards analyses adjusted for important sociodemographic parameters (age, sex, education, main occupation, and socioeconomic status) and global cognitive status [Mini Mental State Examination score (MMSE)] were performed. RESULTS A total of 959 CN and 118 MCI older (>64 years) individuals had follow-up investigations after a mean of ∼3 years. Regarding the CN group, each standard deviation increase in the composite language score reduced the risk of ACS and MCI by 49% (8-72%) and 32% (8-50%), respectively; better SVF and BNTsf performance were also independently associated with reduced risk of ACS and MCI. On the other hand, using the smaller MCI participant set, no language measurement was related to the risk of MCI to ACS conversion. CONCLUSIONS Impaired language performance is associated with elevated risk of ACS and MCI development. Better SVF and BNTsf performance are associated with reduced risk of ACS and MCI in CN individuals, independent of age, sex, education, main occupation, socioeconomic status, and MMSE scores at baseline.

Abstract
An increased cognitive reserve is associated with changes in the pattern of cognitive decline during aging. Thus, normative data adapted to the characteristics of the target population are needed to reduce the possibility of false diagnoses. The aim of this work was to develop normative data for the Phonemic Verbal Fluency test, the Semantic Verbal Fluency test and the Boston Naming Test (BNT). METHOD Regression-based normative data were calculated from a sample of 118 non-depressed, cognitively active, independent community-dwelling adults aged 55 or older (64.4% women) from SABIEX (University for Seniors at the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche). Raw scores were regressed on age, sex, and education. RESULTS The effects of age and education varied across neuropsychological measures. No effect of sex was found in any of the tests assessed. Statistically significant differences were found in the proportion of low scores using SABIEX or population-based normative datasets. The level of agreement identifying individuals labeled as showing one or more low scores was only fair-to-good. CONCLUSIONS Normative data obtained from the general population might not be sensitive to identify low scores in cognitively active older adults, increasing the risk of misdiagnoses. A friendly calculator is available for neuropsychological assessment.

Abstract
Background: Although performance on the category fluency test (CFT) is influenced by many cognitive functions (i.e., including language, executive functioning and speed of processing), item-level scoring methods of CFT performance might be a promising way to capture aspects of semantic memory that are less influenced by intervenient abilities. One such approach is based on the calculation of correlation coefficients that quantify the association between item-level features and the serial order with which words are recalled (SRO). Methods: We explored the neural underpinnings of 10 of these correlational indices in a sample of 40 healthy adults who completed a classic 1-min CFT and an MRI protocol inclusive of T1-weighted (analysed with voxel-based morphometry) and resting-state fMRI sequences for the evaluation of the default-mode network (DMN). Two sets of linear models were defined to test the association between neural maps and each correlational index: a first set in which major demographic and clinical descriptors were controlled for and a second set in which, additionally, all other 9 correlational indices were regressed out. Results: In the analysis of the DMN, ‘SRO-frequency’, ‘SRO-dominance’ and ‘SRO-body-object interaction’ correlational indices were all negatively associated with the anterior portion of the right temporoparietal junction. The ‘SRO-frequency’ correlational index was also negatively associated with the right dorsal anterior cingulate and the ‘SRO-dominance’ correlational index with the right lateral prefrontal cortex. From the second set of models, the ‘SRO-typicality’ correlational index was positively associated with the left entorhinal cortex. No association was found in relation to grey matter maps. Conclusion: The ability to retrieve more difficult words during CFT performance as measured by the correlational indices between SRO and item-level descriptors is associated with DMN expression in regions deputed to attentional reorienting and processing of salience of infrequent stimuli and dominance status. Of all item-level features, typicality appears to be that most closely linked with entorhinal functioning and may thus play a relevant role in assessing its value in testing procedures for early detection of subtle cognitive difficulties in people with suspected Alzheimer’s degeneration. Although exploratory, these findings warrant further investigations in larger cohorts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Scar and vulnerability models assert that increased psychopathology may predict subsequent executive functioning (EF) deficits (and vice versa) over protracted timescales, yet most prior work on this topic has been cross-sectional. Thus, we tested the within- and between-person relations between EF, depression, and anxiety. METHODS Older adult participants (n = 856) were assessed across four waves, approximately 2 years apart. Performance-based EF and caregiver-rated symptom measures were administered. Bivariate latent change score and random-intercept cross-lagged panel models were conducted. RESULTS Within persons, random-intercept cross-lagged panel models revealed that prior greater depression forecasted lower subsequent EF, and vice versa (d = -0.292 vs. -0.292). Bivariate dual latent change score models showed that within-person rise in depression predicted EF decreases, and vice versa (d = -0.245 vs. -0.245). No within-person, cross-lagged, EF-anxiety relations emerged. Further, significant negative between-person EF-symptom relations were observed (d = -0.264 to -0.395). CONCLUSION Prospective, within-person findings offer some evidence for developmental scar and vulnerability models.
